Movie Recommendation of the Week:
REAL LATE REELS because film majors love free films...
By Buddy Candela
D
reams with Sharp Teeth (2008) is a bizarre, humorous, and heartfelt documentary. This unique flick celebrates one of the most brilliant writers of all time, Harlan Ellison. Harlan Ellison is a spectacular storyteller. Best known for his science-fiction writing, Ellison excels in various genres and styles. He is also an activist, husband, and perhaps the most contentious man alive. Dreams with Sharp Teeth is a remarkable glimpse into Ellison’s life from his point of view, and the views of his friends. The film does a good job explaining his persona, childhood and career. The use of home videos and old interview footage of Ellison are tremendously effective. The film’s strongest quality is its honesty. Dreams with Sharp Teeth goes to outstanding lengths to not sugarcoat anything. It shows Ellison for who he truly is, regardless if the audience likes him or not. Ellison’s distinct personality is what sets him apart from all other writers. He’s vulgar, quarrelsome, and at times egotistical. But on the other hand, he is enthusiastic, kindhearted, and human. The finest moment of the film is when Ellison is recalling memories of his parents and looking at old videos. This delves into a side of Ellison that most people haven’t seen before. His raw emotion is extremely touching. However, the majority of the film is focused around how hardheaded Ellison is. His strong opinions and demeanor are the film’s selling point. Ellison’s views on life are as intense as a Schwarzenegger movie. There is a lot of humor involved with Ellison’s skirmishes. His wit makes the film utterly enjoyable to watch. The film has a low-budget feel and isn’t shot too spectacularly. On the production side, there could have been more care taken with lighting and audio. Although it could have been done more professionally, it isn’t unpleasant. There are a few questionable scenes that add to the film’s charm, but at the same time hurt the film. There are segments that feature Ellison giving speeches he wrote directly to the camera. These range from heartfelt tales about his hometown, to him simply screaming at the camera like a lunatic. Despite its minor flaws, Dreams with Sharp Teeth is an enjoyable experience. You are being educated about a man’s life and being entertained at the same time. This movie certainly isn’t for everyone. Some people may leave Dreams with Sharp Teeth hating the film, but loving Harlan as a person. Some may despise Harlan as a person, but love the film. This film is truly unique because it doesn’t tell you what to think about Harlan, it shows you the man and lets you decide for yourself. No matter what your feelings are, “Dreams with Sharp Teeth” isn’t a film you will be forgetting anytime soon.
