Theatre?! Recommendation REAL LATE REELS @ the KIVA because film majors of the Week: Hamilton love free films... RATED: PG-13 Feb. 19 & 20 RT Rating: 70%
By Jessica Marshall
The new musical Hamilton is revolutionary in more than one way. This musical is about the life of Alexander Hamilton, one of our forefathers. The music, lyrics, and book are written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Lin-Manuel Miranda has also written In the Heights and Bring It On the Musical. Hamilton isn’t just your typical musical! All of the songs have a central theme of hip-hop. This is a piece of art that appeals to all ages, keeping the historical accuracy plus a contemporary twist. This musical is about the rise and fall of Alexander Hamilton, United States of America’s 1st secretary of treasury. Alexander had important contacts such as Marquis de Lafayette and “Hercules” Mulligan. Alexander was also George Washington’s “right hand man,” as stated in a musical number. In the songs Cabinet Battle #1 and Cabinet Battle #2, Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton express their difference in political opinions. They were enemies. Aaron Burr narrates this whole story of Hamilton’s life. Burr and Hamilton are our version of “friendemies”. Then Hamilton was going to run for president, but didn’t end up running, while Aaron Burr and Thomas Jefferson did. Hamilton endorsed Jefferson’s campaign. This sparked conflict with Burr, inciting the historical duel between the two. This is the first musical to have a rap influence and a historical background. Hamilton the musical is going up in the charts on Billboard TOP 200. In addition, musical numbers are typically only performed during the Tony Awards. However, on Feb 15th the Hamilton cast will be performing live for the Grammys!
RATED: PG-13 Feb. 26 & 27 RT Rating: 43%
* RT stands for Rotten Tomatoes; all ratings taken from rottentomatoes.com
Millions of people have listened to this amazing album; however, not all have been lucky enough to see Hamilton live. Do you believe this musical should be filmed and present in theaters; just like Hamlet, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, in late 2015? My response is, “Absolutely, yes!”
