A Note From Our KSUIF President by Buddy Candela
Dear KSUIF Members, I hope everyone is having a good October so far! We’ve been pretty busy over here, so here are some updates on what’s been going on! We have a bunch of cool events coming up soon and I hope all of you can join us! We will be having in depth workshops about JMC’s brand new camera, the Canon
C-100, and a bunch of different types of audio equipment! These workshops will be taught by our extremely talented camera and audio specialists from Unlucky! Speaking of Unlucky, we are having a pre-screening of the film on October 21st! This version of the film is our first real “rough cut” of everything so far, and we looking to see how well a test audience likes it so far! This version of the film has no music, sound effects, or visual effects of any kind. The test audience will just be giving us general impressions of the plot, characters, and flow of the story. We hope to see you at this very important event! We are also scheduling a screening of our last feature film Hell at Heathridge to be shown before the end of October! Keep a lookout! We are still looking for some awesome projects to do this semester! Whether it be a short film, a music video, a commercial, anything! If you have any ideas for a project, please send us an email and will help you get the ball rolling! Thanks everyone!

Movie Recommendation of the Week: Almost By Erica Collins Famous
An iconic still from Collins’s all-time favorite movie.
Inspired by writer/director Cameron Crowe’s experience as a rock-and-roll journalist in his high school days, Almost Famous is the story of William Miller (Patrick Fugit), a 15-year-old aspiring journalist in the 1970’s who is granted the opportunity of a lifetime when he is asked to write an article for Rolling Stone magazine about up-and-coming rock band Stillwater. Much to the dismay of his extremely strict and overprotective mother (Frances McDormand), he joins Stillwater on their tour and quickly befriends guitarist Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup) and falls for the young and beautiful Penny Lane (Kate Hudson), a groupie also traveling with the band. Things become complicated, however, when William’s closeness with the band and his infatuation with Penny Lane (and her affair with Russell) begin to stir up some trouble within the group. Can William finish his story in time? You’ll have to watch to find out! Almost Famous is not just a rock film- it is a beautifully and expertly written coming-of-age story about experiencing the harsh realities of the real world while still maintaining hope for humanity and believing that even the most troubled souls have the ability to achieve greatness. It is about the preservation of innocence as well as the loss of it, and William and Penny Lane are incredibly well-developed and relatable characters in this aspect. If you love rock music, the 1970s, and “dramedys”, Almost Famous is the perfect film for you!
