A process book is a great way to chronicle work flow and completed work during the course of the semester. It is a vehicle to gather scraps of notes, ideas, mock-ups, working files and final outcomes of assignments and projects. This is more than an artists book. It will tell the story of how I choose final iterations. This should be an enlightening look into a rich , methodology that is repeatable and reliable.

Sequencing
sequencing// how to refill your fountain pen
Something so simple can be complicated to explain. On this project I have matched an organized layout with simplified instruction. My sketches foreshadow tight alignments and a composition that came together early in the process. Here I also explore ideas for layering that did not make the final cut.

REfilling a FOUNtain pen// Final outcome
PAGE // 17
In accordance with my preliminary sketches, the final outcome communicates an executive look and feel. I utilized an international style to reflect the business environment of a premium writing pen. Choosing a complimentary color scheme of Yellow and Cyan, I sought to highlight the chrome features of the pen. It’s important to stress that the fountain pen is a luxury item, but not extravagant.

A key feature of this booklet’s design is photography. This was shot in hard lighting to give me a defined shadow. This hard edge is there to compliment the coldness of a writing instrument as opposed to a soft feel that may give unwanted warmth to the visual.
observations// Maelstrom: A Prosaic Homage
My design on this project is vibrant and colorfully attuned to the idea of a young woman progressing through her teens into her early twenties. This was a great step into flowery territory for me. The subject of my interview informed this design through her personal style and life story. I only hope to reflect a glimmer of her here.

At this point I’m refining my scheme to spacious concept that was scrapped. I’m focused on weight and balance. My type and images overlap-foreshadowing my use of transparency in the final product.

FINAL COVer// CAlm amidst the storm

This cover concept came to me very early in the process as an idea for a spread. Realizing the potential of the imagery I re-purposed it to represent the protagonist of my story. I wanted her to be faceless, young and enveloped in nature. In this case, a deluge.
The Broadsheet/ A socially aware publication
This is my first time printing to this scale and it was a great opportunity to use large type and broad visual I’m not used to. The purpose of this broadsheet is to explore a positive counter argument to discriminatory practices, in my case those directed at young black males in the United States.

My inspiration for this design was National Geographic. When I think of a trusted source of news centered on socially stratification, that is my touch point. To that end I started with a cover design that generated a sense of fear and distortion. I want to grab your attention with an accusation as if to say “you see this black man as a threat, admit it!”. The full sheet is assembled as presented here and folded down into it’s final form.

Spreads// Leading you across the page
PAGE // 51
My primary tool to lead the eye on such a large reader spread is alignment. Here I’m able to pull you across from left to right using short bursts of text that lead to fully expanded paragraphs. I want this to communicate to the lazy reader who will pluck the most vital information and leave the context in the background.
