What to know about buying a used electric vehicle
Purchasing a used electric vehicle (EV) might get you in an electric car faster and at a lower price, but there are some important factors to consider before taking the keys.
With EV sales increasing and more electric models available from brands such as Tesla, BYD and MG, the price of used EVs has become more competitive, and the market for secondhand electric cars is also growing. This means you have a wider range of EVs to choose from, allowing you to find a used vehicle that suits your needs and preferences.
If you are set on purchasing a used EV, there’s a few things to keep in mind before handing over any money.
Charging port and cable
Most, but not all, new EVs come with a charging cable (Tesla notably stopped providing a charger with new vehicles in 2022). When purchasing a used EV, it’s worth making sure the seller is at least including a level one (emergency) charger with the vehicle.
This will ensure you are able to plug the vehicle into a power point when you take it home.
You’ll also want to check the charging ports on the second-hand car to rule out any damage and give the charger itself a once over to check for wear and tear.
Vehicle and battery warranty
It is important to find out about the warranty that covers the car and the battery as these are often separate. The battery warranty usually guarantees the battery will maintain at least 70 per cent of its original charging capacity for the battery warranty period.
The warranty term differs across the various car brands and models. Tesla cars usually come with a four-year or 80,000km (whichever comes first) warranty with the battery itself having a warranty of eight years or 160,000km – 192,000km depending on the model.
Some other models like the older BMW i3 only came with a three-year manufacturer warranty whereas other brands like MG come with a seven-year warranty. So, it is essential to get the information on the warranty of the vehicle you are interested in buying.

Overcoming EV adoption barriers in Australia: a guide for businesses
New research conducted by global data and insights company, Pureprofile Limited (ASX: PPL), reveals that high upfront costs, a lack of public chargers and range anxiety are keeping more Australians and New Zealanders from investing in electric vehicles (EVs) for transport. The research, conducted in August 2023, gathered perceptions and attitudes toward the emerging electric vehicle market from over 2,000 Australian and 1,000 New Zealand respondents.
The research reveals that high upfront costs, a lack of public chargers and range anxiety are keeping more Australians and New Zealanders from investing in EVs for transport.
Key findings:
• Close to two-fifths (39%) of Australians mentioned that high upfront investment is standing in the way of their EV
• purchase.
• Almost 2 out of 3 (65%) Australians reported that the rising cost of living has also hampered their ability to purchase an EV.
• Over one-third (36%) felt that Australia did not have enough EV charging stations throughout the country.
• 28% said that they were worried about running out of battery power in the middle of a journey.
Limited electric vehicle adoption in Australia
Australian rates of electric vehicle adoption are far behind other nations with only 3% of vehicle owners currently using EVs. In fact, 89% of Australians still drive petrol-powered vehicles, 15% drive diesel vehicles, and 4% drive hybrid vehicles.
The research shows that New Zealand had a much higher rate of adoption than Australia, with 11% owning EVs. The majority of Kiwis still own petrol vehicles (83%), with 12% owning diesel vehicles and 8% owning hybrid vehicles.
Australian and New Zealand EV adoption rates still sit well behind other developed nations, with Norway (all-electric vehicles made up 80% of passenger vehicle sales in 2022), Iceland (41%), Sweden (32%), the Netherlands (24%) and China (22%) topping global adoption charts.
Despite low ownership rates, Australians do have a significant level of enthusiasm for EVs with 77% intending to purchase one in the future. Fuel cost savings (56%) and long-term environmental benefits (49%) topped the list of reasons why Australians would consider an EV. Kiwis proved to be much more budget-conscious in this regard, with 73% prioritising savings and 50% considering the environmental benefits. Yet, significant obstacles still stand in the way of widespread adoption in the ANZ region.
High upfront costs
Close to two-fifths (39%) of Australians mentioned that high upfront investment is standing in the way of their EV purchase, with the average price of a vehicle currently sitting at $86,000. Almost 2 out of 3 (65%) Australians reported that the rising cost of living has also hampered their ability to purchase an EV.
For those who would purchase a secondhand EV (36%) in order to save on cost, their primary considerations were battery health and remaining vehicle lifespan (60%). Nearly one-third (31%) of Australians are planning to make their first EV purchase within the next two to five years. Toyota (44%), Tesla (33%), and Hyundai (25%) emerged as the top brands they are contemplating for this forthcoming acquisition.
Again, Kiwis appear to be much more sensitive to expenses with more than 1 in 2 (52%) reporting that high upfront costs were a key barrier, with 66% agreeing that the rising cost of living has limited their resources. They were also more likely (49%) to consider a secondhand EV vehicle.
A lack of charging infrastructure and range anxiety
Another top adoption barrier was concern surrounding the amount of charging stations available in Australia. Over one-third (36%) felt that Australia did not have enough EV charging stations throughout the country. As of December 2022, Australia has fewer than 2400 public charging locations. Comparatively, Canada (which is of similar geographical size and population to Australia) has more than 8700 public charging stations. Only 1 in 4 Australians (26%) believe that the government has invested enough in infrastructure to support the rollout of EVs.
Closely related to concerns about a lack of public chargers, 28% said that they were worried about running out of battery power in the middle of a journey. Australians’ range anxiety is so acute that 78% reported that they felt it was important for EV owners to have roadside assistance cover, with 65% willing to pay extra for insurance that provides roadside assistance or towing for a flat battery.
Despite having a relatively strong public charging station network (New Zealand currently has 340 public charging stations; approximately one for every 75 kilometres of state highway), sentiments were similar in New Zealand. A quarter (25%) were concerned about insufficient charging stations, and 36% worried about running out of battery mid-journey. The majority of Kiwis (76%) also felt it was important to have roadside assistance cover with 68% willing to pay extra for it.
“Businesses, and insurance companies in particular, need to stay abreast of evolving EV attitudes and considerations, especially in light of developments such as the High Court quashing Victoria’s EV levy. In this ever-evolving landscape, market research becomes a vital tool, ensuring that all stakeholders remain responsive to our increasingly environmentally-conscious society.”

Most EV owners would repurchase, but cost-of-living crisis preventing greater adoption
New research conducted by global data and insights company, Pureprofile Limited (ASX: PPL) reveals that 94% of existing Australian EV (electric vehicle) owners would purchase an EV again when it is time to buy a new car. However, the escalating cost of living is hindering prospective buyers from purchasing an EV, with 70% expressing this concern.
Conducted in March 2024, the research gathered perceptions and attitudes toward the emerging electric vehicle market from over 2,000 Australian and 1,000 New Zealand respondents and follows an initial survey conducted in August 2023.
There has been minimal change for EV ownership since the last survey in both markets, which continue to lag behind other countries according to International Energy Association data (0.6% of Australian cars are EVs, vs 1.3% in the US, 2.8% in the UK and 4% in Germany).
Australians are showing a growing interest in EVs. About 1 in 2 (52%) of Australians expressed interest in buying a new car in the next 12 months, of whom 30% would likely purchase an EV and 20% a self-charging hybrid vehicle. In New Zealand, there’s more hesitation towards early adoption, with self-charging hybrid vehicles still a higher purchase consideration than EVs (28% vs 26%).
Current EV Owners
Current Australian EV owners are happy with their experiences. The top satisfaction factor (64%) was the cost savings on fuel, followed by environmental benefits (37%) and taking advantage of solar power for charging (30%).
On the downside, 29% underestimated the importance of accessible charging stations, 23% did not fully consider future resale value and 21% did not fully consider the long-term implications of battery ageing (21%).
Kiwi EV owners were also satisfied with their ownership experiences, with cost savings on fuel topping the charts at 67%, followed by environmental benefits (40%). Additionally, they appreciated the lower maintenance cost of an EV as compared to other vehicle types. Regrets included not opting for a model with a longer range (24%), underestimating the importance of accessible charging stations (23%) and not fully considering the long-term implications of battery ageing (22%).
Prospective EV owners
For prospective EV owners In Australia and New Zealand, the most common duration they would expect to buy their first EV is 2 to 5 years (37%). However, the number of Australians planning to purchase their first EV within a year rose significantly (from 14% to 22%). Conversely, more Kiwi intenders would wait longer before purchasing (58% selected ranges from 2-10 years vs 51% six months ago).
The top motivations for EV purchases across countries are cost savings on fuel (57% Australia, 72% New Zealand) and environmental benefits (45% Australia, 50% New Zealand). Energy efficiency also grew significantly compared to six months ago with 38% (up from 33%) of Australians and 34% of New Zealanders (up from 30%) listing it as a major motivator. Intenders across both countries are also increasingly interested in the possibility of using solar power to charge their EV (16% vs 19% in Australia, 13% vs 14% in New Zealand)
Despite cost of living concerns, government rebates were not seen as a key incentive for EV purchase with just 15% of respondents in both countries saying rebates would factor into their decision-making. Australians were more likely to purchase despite rebates ending than New Zealanders (37% vs 27%).
For both Australians and New Zealanders, the top brand considered remains Toyota (48% Australia, 53% New Zealand). Tesla is the next choice for Australians (30%) followed by Hyundai (29%) and Kia (26%). New Zealanders rank Kia second (23%) followed by Hyundai (22%).
A lack of charging stations remains a huge concern for EV owners and intenders. In Australia, 38% expressed concern about station availability and 31% worried about running out of battery mid-journey. While the number of charging stations has surged by 90% in the past year to over 5,000, this is still lagging behind the rate of EV adoption. In comparison, there are over 32,000 charging stations in the UK, 51,000 in Germany, 68,000 in the US and 2.7 million in China.
In New Zealand, charging range anxiety is the biggest concern (48%) with fewer than 1 in 4 people (24%) feeling that the government has invested adequately in EV infrastructure. Currently, EV owners in New Zealand have invested in home power sources to support their charging needs and rely extensively on home charging for long-term cost savings and convenience.
Anna Meiler, Pureprofile’s Managing Director APAC, says: “It’s clear that adoption of EVs in both Australia and New Zealand will continue to rise, however, there currently appears to be a tug of war between sustainability and savings with upfront costs posing a serious barrier to greater uptake. Currently, people do not seem to be factoring government rebates into their EV decisions, but this might be a result of several EV schemes ending in some Australian states and across New Zealand. This leaves some potential for more creative motivation avenues, such as community or business EV share schemes that encourage people to experience EV ownership without the full financial commitment.
“There is also considerable catch-up to do when it comes to charging stations, which are a major pain point for EV drivers in both countries. There’s scope for a solid partnership between the government and private EV manufacturers or ancillary services to urgently accelerate the deployment of public charging infrastructure.”
