What am I doing Here? I remember the first day of school, I was looking through the list of clubs there were at my school and picking and choosing as I went. I went to quite a few people to ask for help on which clubs I should join and many of them recommended Key Club because it gave me volunteer hours and it looked good on my college resume, so I decided to take a chance and attended the meeting. While I was at the first meeting, all I could keep thinking is “What am I doing here, I have so much homework to finish and I could be doing so many other things than sitting here and listening to these people talk,” but I stayed. I stayed and wondered what I was doing in this club that didn’t seem very extraordinary- and until recently I really didn’t understand. One of the opportunities we had in Key Club was our Trick or Treat for Unicef fundraiser, which I decided to partake in. I decided to ask for donations at an Indian party filled with quite a few people who would all have a lot of change to spare (or at least I hoped). As I walked in I realized 2 things, one- I knew no one here, two- since I know no one here it means i needed to interact with other human beings (yikes) and actually explain why they need to donate for this cause. After getting over my nerves (which took about 30 minutes) I approached my first subject, a man who had been sitting alone on his phone, and began my whole speech about who I am and what I came to ask for and why he should donate. After I was finished he looked at me and smiled, pulled out a 5 dollar bill and gave it to me. After him I went around for a while and collected more money, but before I left the man found me again. He told me how impressed he was that someone my age cared about something other than herself, and that he was happy that there were opportunities for young people like me to help different people in our societies. He told me how he had a friend who used to rely on food pantries and such to get by- and how much even small things like collecting twenty dollars from strangers could help. The talk with the man brought me back full circle, because here was the reason that I was at Key Club. Not for volunteer hours and for college recommendations, but because there were people out there that I was helping. Not a nameless faceless person but but someone that others cared about, and that deserved help. That is the point of Key Club. To help and to serve. by Tanvi Bellam (Grade 10)
