What does Children’s Miracle Network do? Children’s Miracle Network provides funds to 170 hospitals across the United States and Canada. These funds provide more research opportunities, uncompensated care of children, and the purchasing of new equipment, or even sometimes entire hospital wings designated entirely to children’s care. CMN’s mission is to improve the lives of as many children as possible. Every minute, there are 62 children, an average of one per second, who enter the care of Children’s Miracle Network. Some are fighting for their lives after a traumatic accident, and others are battling cancer while still others are being served for basic medical and surgical needs. Because of partnerships with organizations such as Key Club International, Children’s Miracle Network is able to treat 10 million children annually! The history of CMN Children’s Miracle Network was first commissioned on August 11, 1983 by Mick Shannon, Marie Osmond, John Schneider, and Joe Lake. In the summer of 1983, a telethon aired in Orem, Utah. This telethon raised $4.8 million for 22 Children’s Hospitals. Shortly after this telethon, Children’s Miracle Network was founded. The telethon remains as the main fundraiser for Children’s Miracle Network. Soon after it’s founding, CMN welcomed Marriott International has its first fundraising partner. Marriott International remains as the longest lasting fundraising partner with CMN to date. One year later, in 1984, CMN welcomed Dairy Queen as a corporate partner. Dairy Queen’s largest fundraiser in support of CMN is Miracle Treat Day. On Miracle Treat Day, for every blizzard bought, Dairy Queen donates $1 to CMN. In 1986, after being told “no” multiple times by the store owners, Eleanor Lancey (an employee at a local CMN Hospital) convinced O’Rourke’s Diner in Middleton, Connecticut to sell paper balloons in exchange for a donation to the hospital. Currently, Miracle Balloons raise over $88 million each year. In 1991, CMN passed the $100 million mark in donations. Later in this same year, CMN took on yet another partner, Ace Hardware. Ace Hardware has raised $50 million in donations for CMN since the start of the partnership. CMN pledged to quadruple the funds to its hospitals by 2022. Medical Miracles made possible by CMN CMN Hospitals have been able to create many “medical firsts”: Continued on Page 4

Featured Organization: Children’s Miracle Network- Continued

In 1987, doctors at CMN sponsored hospital, Johns Hopkins Children’s Center made medical history. A 50 member surgical team worked for over 22 hours to be the first to successfully separate conjoined twins. In 2006, Dr. Paul Offit (Dr. at CMN Hospital) discovered the rotavirus vaccine which saved over 600,000 children a year. In 2013, a CMN hospital soared to the top of the headlines yet again with another medical breakthrough. Doctors and Researchers at Batson Children’s Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi cured a baby of H.I.V. Infection. Other Notable Partners CMN has many partners that are willing to help raise money for their cause: In 1987, Walmart and Sam’s Club became official partners with Children’s Miracle Network. Since their partnership in 1987, Walmart and Sam’s Club have donated more than $650 million In 1988, the first Costco partnered with CMN. Costco has since donated over $180 million to Children’s Miracle Network. Delta Airlines became an official partner in 1988 and is now entering its second year as the sponsors of the CMN Champions Program. IHOP became an official partner in 2006 with its first annual National Pancake Day. National Pancake Day has raised over $13 million since its start. In 2008, CMN partnered with Fox owned and operated stations to produce the program ‘Hospital Heroes’. The program highlights the bravery and courage of the children whom CMN serves. Since 1996, children of the Champions Program have met with Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama at the White House. What can you do to help? The best thing you can do as a Key Club member is to continue to be active in our club’s fundraiser for Children’s Miracle Network. As you can see, Children’s Miracle Network is making a difference in the lives of children all over the United States and Canada. With your help, they continue to make medical breakthroughs, and heal children all over the world. So, keep up the good work and donate on!
