PRESIDENT’S LETTER | BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS

President’s Letter Dear Neighbors, BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS

As we approach the fall and winter seasons, we would hope you have noticed the improvements that have been made throughout the Roselle Park District this summer. The Park Board and the staff closely monitor the financial condition of the Park District. The District’s healthy budget is the result of years spent planning and collaborating to ensure the best uses of our tax funds, and to find alternate sources of revenue. We are still awaiting word on the status of our $2.5 million dollar PARC grant for the refurbishment of the Turner Park Building. While the District was awarded the grant last fall, it has been in a suspended status since last January, but depending on how Springfield’s final budget stands the grant obligation may or may not be fulfilled. Staff continues to work with our legislators to keep the project and OSLAD grants fully funded. While the building is in serious need of repair to be usable as needed program space, waiting on this possible grant money will provide the residents of Roselle more “bang for the buck.” Plans include beautiful meeting and program spaces that take advantage of the view of the water. Stay tuned!

This summer marked our first year of musical productions by the Roselle Repertoire: High School Musical 2 – with two shows performed at Lake Park East auditorium. Auditions for the upcoming musical Beauty and the Beast will be held at Clauss Recreation Center on August 29th and 30th. The performance will take place at Lake Park West on December 5th.

ALL YOU NEED IS A USER NAME AND PASSWORD

I personally took advantage of the resident rates we are able to offer for golf at nearby park district courses at Fox Run in Elk Grove, as well as Bloomingdale Golf Course. This offer is valid as long as the courses are open!

Highlights from this brochure which covers program offerings from late August through early November 2015 include new adult fitness classes, an adult whiffle ball tournament and a host of spooky Halloween happenings. You’ll need a bigger calendar to list all the events we offer for your consideration, including a Sock Hop, two Mom and Son Sport Nights and of course Breakfast with Santa.

We hope you will join us this season and explore your favorite ways to have some fun in your very own Roselle Park District backyard -- a great place to work and play

The Roselle Park District put together some fun, creative, and entertaining opportunities for you to enjoy throughout 2015. Fall festivities are listed below. All are low cost to attend and all ages welcome. • • • • • •

Toddler Time is designed to promote parent and children interaction while spending quality time together with other families in a structured and creative environment. This 13 week interactive class facilitates learning and interaction through crafts, independent playtime, singing, dancing, simple exercises, and story time. Your toddler will achieve social and academic skills to help prepare them for preschool. Grab your toddler and come to class ready to enjoy one-on-one time. This class is in the evenings right before bed time for all working parents who cannot attend a parent and child class during day hours. A parent must attend class with their toddler. Children are required to wear socks at all times.

Newly Renovated and Enhanced Preschool Rooms Interactive Promethean White Boards The new technology products in the classrooms will strengthen early learning. Youngsters will be excited to use and learn on these tools throughout the year. Children of all learning styles will be actively engaged in their individual learning. Current research has shown that technology is changing the way children learn, and interactive boards will keep the attention of a preschooler for longer periods of time. These boards will be used in various ways in the classroom by both the teachers and the preschoolers. This new interactive technology will enhance circle time, music and movement, read alouds, and shape the foundation for success in grades K-12. Carpet and Floors and Countertops The new carpet tiles, floor tiles, and cabinet countertops were installed over the summer to bring a freshness to the preschool rooms. Rooms have a brighter look and feel as we enter a new school year.

Thanks, Coaches!

A Place To . . . Play

Fall Youth Soccer League (VO) AGES 5-13

The Roselle Park District thanks the following volunteer coaches for their time and effort this past spring soccer season: Chris Kontos, Matt Turczyniak, Matt Zilisch, Mike Widelski, Lou Porcaro, Angel Maldonado, Joe Romeo, and Shane Gizzi. Your time and effort are greatly valued by the Roselle Park District and parents of the participating girls and boys. Volunteer Coaches Needed! Be it our in-house soccer and basketball leagues, or Raptors travel basketball teams, volunteer coaches are a valuable ingredient in our youth athletic programs. Without caring moms and dads from the community, giving of their time and effort, we would not be able to offer these types of activities. They understand the valuable lessons of participation, teamwork, character, and sportsmanship. The Roselle Park District feels these long-term principles are paramount and cannot be shoved aside in order to achieve short-term “victories.” If you are a “first timer,” we offer clinics and an on-line coach’s certification program for those interested in this fun and rewarding opportunity. Please call Vic Orlandino at 630-894-4200 for details.

Information in regards to our Fall Youth Soccer League can be found annually in our summer brochure. There still may be openings on teams. Please call our front desk at 630-894-4200 to inquire.

Class Descriptions continued TAP: Tap is an extremely unique style of dance. It teaches dancers to focus mainly on their feet, instead of using their whole bodies to express the emotion. It allows them to use their feet to make the music, and to hear the back beats and counts. This class will help the dancers learn new skills and routines. HIP HOP: Hip Hop is fun, funky, and very unique. Free-formed and derived from its street history, it’s a lot of pop and lock, filled with sharp percussive moves. It allows dancers to learn an up-beat type of dance, while having a great time. They will be able to develop their skills and stage presence. Dancers will learn crisp movements while also learning to move with the music. Class will include flexibility, skills, and different combinations. ACRO: Acro is a style of dance that combines jazz technique with acrobatic elements. This class is highly recommended for dancers who want to improve their flexibility and strength, as well as their dance and tumbling skills, while having a great time.

Dance Company Information Night (DC) Thursday, August 27 7:00 pm If your child is interested in joining Dance Company we encourage you and your child to attend the informational meeting. The Dance Supervisor and Company Instructors will be at the meeting. We will discuss the outline of the program, the commitment, competitions, costs, practices, the differences between classes, and all elements of the program. We welcome any questions as we want you to make the best decision for your child.

Dance Company (DC) September-May AGES 6-15 Dance Company is an accelerated program at the Roselle Park District for the more serious dance student. It is a step forward for the dancer who wishes to demonstrate more dedication to dance, thus having additional dance performance opportunities throughout the community and surrounding area, as well as competitions. Most students desiring to be in this program are interested in a more intensive curriculum. Dance Company allows students to be a member of a dance team to form bonds and friendships which create memories that will last a lifetime. This program is a commitment from September 2015-May 2016, which includes approximately 30 weeks of class, for a total of 60 hours of technique instruction. Placement in competitive dance routines is based on the dancer’s skills, technique, dedication, and overall performance during class sessions in September. All decisions are solely up to the discretion of the Dance Company Instructors and Supervisor. Every dancer participating in Dance Company will be required to take an hour long ballet technique class and an hour long jazz technique class, dancers will learn their large group choreography during these classes as well. It is highly recommended that an hour long leaps and turns class be taken in addition to tech and choreo classes for all Company members in the teen category. There will be choreography classes on Saturday for EACH routine the dancer is placed in, and these will be a separate registration. Each dancer must be committed 100% to Dance Company which meets for technique two times a week, and Saturdays for additional routines. Dancers are required to meet for all classes and should not miss more than a total of 5 classes. If there are excessive absences or more than the allotted 5 absences, the dancer is required to purchase and take private lessons to make-up for their time lost in class. Missing class can lead to routines being pulled from competition. Any classes missed two weeks prior to a show, performance, or competition will require the dancer to purchase and take an hour long private lesson. This is a competitive dance team, and dedication to the art of dance is essential, and attendance is important to the development of the team as well as the growth of the dancer. Dancers and parents are required to sign a commitment and enrollment contract at the time of registration.

Dance Company Costumes and Competitions All Dance Company costume costs, competition cost, jackets, and Rhinestoning are separate from class registration fees. Costumes are to be paid for prior to costume orders in October and competitions are to be paid for prior to attending competitions. Information will be given out during the season.

Dance Company Technique Class (DC) AGES 6-15

Monday, October 12 11:00 am-2:00 pm See page 7 for details 40

Technique classes will be separated by age categories (Mini, Junior, and Teen) and will be an hour long for ballet and an hour long for jazz. Choreography for the large group will be taught in technique class. The large group routine will be performed during the Holiday and Spring Shows, and at Competitions. If your child wishes to be a part of the Company classes, but not perform the large group routine at competitions, he or she will not attend class two weeks prior to the competition dates. For dancers competing, any classes missed two weeks prior to a show, performance, or competition will require the dancer to purchase and take an hour long private lesson. The two weeks prior to a competition will be used to re-block, clean, and better prepare the large group routine before on stage performance. Dancers should exhibit a good work ethic, a commitment to learn, be respectful of the program, students, and instructors, and maintain positive attitude. Not all Roselle residents are Roselle Park District residents. Even though you may have a Roselle address, you may pay taxes to another park district. For all facility rentals, Clauss Recreation Center, or Turner Park, there is a consistent $25 increase for non-residents in addition to the stated resident fees.

Wait List Process

A wait list is formed when a class reaches participant levels beyond the maximum. The wait list is designed to maintain interested people in a holding area until more spaces in the program are available, someone drops out, transfers, or a new section is added by park district staff based on interest. Friday, November 13 ALL AGES Now that you’ve heard, please spread the word! Join the Roselle Park District in celebrating its 50th Anniversary at our Sock Hop! You and your family will rock around the clock while you enjoy a delicious dinner buffet, root beer float bar, dance to music of the 50’s and 60’s, and the chance to win prizes! You will want to dance on down to the Roselle Park District gym as we flashback to 50 years ago to celebrate.
