PRESIDENT’S LETTER | BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS

President’s Letter Dear Neighbors, BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS

This year, the Roselle Park District celebrates 50 years of service to the Roselle community. During the year, we’ll be celebrating and honoring the enduring power of parks and recreation. We’ll have many exciting ways for you to get involved in celebrating – after all, we couldn’t have reached 50 years without you, our members and supporters. See page 6 for the line-up of summer events that will kick-off the yearlong celebration. As we approach the end of Roselle Park District’s current fiscal year, it is my pleasure to share with you that the District has had another year of great results! The Park District’s management and staff continue to perform their duties within the stated budget while providing a high level of service, as well as many, many enjoyable classes and events for our District residents to enjoy. Being in such a stable financial place makes it possible to continue our upward trend, rolling out exciting plans for the coming year. We are especially proud to announce the District was again awarded a Certificate of Achievement from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada. This award is the highest form of recognition given in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, so receiving this honor represents a significant accomplishment. In addition, the District became an Accredited Agency through the Park District Risk Management Association by achieving two yearly audit scores above 96% for its last two audits. As residents of Roselle Park District we should be proud and thankful for our dedicated Park District management and staff. Pool season is almost upon us, it’s time to purchase or renew your pool pass membership. Kemmerling Pool received a 5-Star (out of 5) overall rating for the 2012, 2013 and again in 2014 season from SAI, one of the largest lifeguard, swim instructor and pool operator certifying agencies in the United States. Many of our staff from last year are returning, so we look forward to another safe and wonderful summer. Highlights from this brochure which covers program offerings from May through early September 2015 include a call for kids to pack their bags and join us for another fun session of Camp Laugh A Lot summer camp, as well as a new Theater Camp and Family Camp Out . Now’s your excuse to purchase that cool Fitbit you’ve been wanting and join RPD’s FREE Fitbit User Group! You’ll need a bigger calendar to list all the events we offer for your consideration, including the Luau at Kemmerling Pool, our very popular Concerts in the Park series, TouchA-Truck, the Bounce Back to School night and several Pooch Events that are as much for the human as they are for the canine members of the family. Lastly, don’t forget to swing by Clauss and pick up your Passport to Adventure and explore our parks with your family.

They will have circle time, make art projects, color and paint, manipulate sensory objects, learn routines, and have opportunities to practice cooperating with others their age to learn about sharing, helping, and caring. Kids in the various early childhood camps will come together in large group settings for various activities, and there will be times when the kids are also separated by specific ages for customized activities. Children ages 3-5 should be potty trained, and kids ages 2 should be working on potty training. There is a bathroom in the classrooms, however, staff cannot help with diapers, cleaning, or changing. Kids should bring a backpack, and a labeled water bottle every day. Kids enrolled until 1:00 pm should bring a sack lunch. A Place To . . . Play

The Roselle Park District staff would like to thank our volunteer basketball coaches for their time and effort this past season. Their names: Mike Patton, Matt Walsh, Anthony Noti, Pat Rochford, Charlie Matson, Mike Harris, Jerry Krokos, Justin De Luca, Vince Corso, Scott Kuban, Charlie Gibson, Gregg DeWaele, Brian Matuszewski, Andy Rinaldi, Bill Huber, Keenan Hoytt, Rob Bisceglie, Joaquin Hernandez, Don Shake, Sean Sarubbi, Marco Donato, Stan Czaja, BJ Perez, Ralph Roque, and Ray Beacom. Volunteer Coaches Needed! Be it our in-house soccer and basketball leagues, or Raptors travel basketball teams, volunteer coaches are a valuable ingredient in our youth athletic programs. Without caring moms and dads from the community, giving of their time and effort, we would not be able to offer these types of activities. They understand the valuable lessons of participation, teamwork, character, and sportsmanship. The Roselle Park District feels these long-term principles are paramount and cannot be shoved aside in order to achieve short-term “victories.” If you are a “first timer,” we offer clinics and an on-line coach’s certification program for those interested in this fun and rewarding opportunity. Please call Vic Orlandino at 630-894-4200 for details.

Fall Youth Soccer League (VO) AGES 5-13

Shotokan Karate (VO) AGES 4 and up

Emphasis in the Mid-Suburban Soccer League is placed on individual instruction, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Teams will be based on approximately 12 to 15 players per roster depending on age groups. Wait lists will be used until there are enough players and a volunteer head coach to form another team. Games are played on Saturdays against neighboring park districts. Competition will start September 12. Practices will be held during the week based on coach’s availability. Practices will start two weeks prior to game play dependent upon securing enough volunteer coaches. Parents will receive a call from their child’s coach once the team selection process is completed informing them of first practice location, date and time. Registering before the July 13 early-bird deadline does not necessarily guarantee a spot on a team due to minimum/maximum numbers established to form a team. The number of teams competing this fall out of the Roselle Park District is to be submitted to league officials early August for scheduling purposes. Registrations will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis.

Children and adults universally enjoy learning the art of karate. Classes are taught by Illinois Shotokan Karate Club’s expert instructors under the direction of John DiPasquale, four-time National Champion, U.S. Karate National Coach and President of the National Karate Federation of the U.S. Beginner students will not be permitted to register into the current session after the second class has met. Registration for continuers through advanced students will be accepted after the start date, but the full class fee is required.

Take advantage of our early-bird sign-up fee of $60 by registering before July 14. All registrations submitted from July 14 on will be charged an additional $10 and, again, players cannot be guaranteed a spot on a team. Please indicate on enrollment form if you would be able to manage a team. Also, please let our front desk staff know if you would be interested in coaching. They will make note of this in our computer registration software. If you are not familiar with the game of soccer, don’t worry, we can teach you everything you need to know. Age of a child as of August 1, 2015, will determine at what level he/she will be eligible to play this fall. For example: the “U” (as in U8 Division) indicates child must be under the age of eight as of August 1, 2015, to participate in that level. If nine years old as of August 1, 2015, child should be enrolled in U(under)10 division. FEE: R $70/NR $80 ID# 123110-A 123110-B 123110-C 123110-D 123110-E

Roselle Park District School of Dance (DC) Class Descriptions

A Place To . . . Grow

TWIRLING TWOS: Twirling twos is designed for the excited young dancer who is eager to twirl around, move about, and learn the basics of dance by using interactive songs and props. Dancers will learn simple dance skills along with listening and social skills. Only two year olds can join this class and instruction is designed to capture their attention and keep their interest. This class runs September through May to ensure a positive transition into the dance classroom; the dancers will be comfortable with the studio room, instructor, and peers. PRINCESS DANCE: Princess Dancers will have a magical time imagining that they are a dancing princess as they learn introductory ballet skills and incorporate a princess’s story. The dance instructor will feature popular princesses that all young dancers can relate to. CREATIVE MOVEMENT: Creative Movement will allow the dancer to kick their heels up, shimmy, shake, twist, shout, and turn all about while they try out different styles of dance. While dancing their hearts out, dancers will learn the importance of stretching, basic dance terms, simple choreography, and play dance games. Props may be incorporated with this class to build interest for the young and new dancer. The dance instructor will focus on basic movements and steps and the students will leave with basic dance knowledge of different styles. Dancers should bring a sack lunch. TINY BALLERINAS: Tiny Ballerinas will allow the tiny dancers to begin to further develop their introductory ballet skills, while also having fun. This class will teach the dancers basic skills and flexibility, so that if they decide to continue dancing they will be able to take their skills to the next level.

Discover, Learn, Imagine, Smile, Laugh, Dance

BALLET: Ballet is the most important style of dance and is the foundation for all other dance disciplines. This class is highly recommended for any dancer who wants to improve on their skills because it is the core of all dance technique and movement. This class puts emphasis on flexibility, skills, and posture. Ballet focuses on building the strength and technique of a dancer, and will help any dancer planning to pursue a higher level of dance in the future. *NEW* POINTE: Pointe is only open to dancers who have mastered the necessary levels of ballet and have been approved by the instructor. Pointe is similar to ballet, however dancers wear pointe shoes: ballet shoes with a hard, full soled shank and a boxed toe. The pointe shoe allows the dancer to go fully onto pointe while in releve. This class is for the more advanced dancer (at least 3 years ballet experience and 12 years old) and requires dancers to be in additional ballet class, and instructor approval. Not everyone is made for pointe class, so ankle/foot bone structure, stage of growth, and strength must all be considered by the instructor prior to participation. JAZZ: Jazz is a style of dance that will allow the dancer to learn the most important skills of dance, while adding a splash of spark to their performances. This class will improve the dancer’s skills, flexibility, posture, and stage presence. They will also learn various combinations and routines throughout the classes.

Class Descriptions continued TAP: Tap is an extremely unique style of dance. It teaches dancers to focus mainly on their feet, instead of using their whole bodies to express the emotion. It allows them to use their feet to make the music, and to hear the back beats and counts. This class will help the dancers learn new skills and routines.

School of Dance (DC) AGES 2-14 Summer dance classes are a great way to keep your dancer busy this summer with twirling, leaping, moving, and of course, dancing! There is no better way to keep your child interested in dance, or get them started in dance classes before the fall season.

HIP HOP: Hip Hop is fun, funky, and very unique. Free-formed and derived from its street history, it’s a lot of pop and lock, filled with sharp percussive moves. It allows dancers to learn an up-beat type of dance, while having a great time. They will be able to develop their skills and stage presence. Dancers will learn crisp movements while also learning to move with the music. Class will include flexibility, skills, and different combinations.

When choosing a class for your dancer please place him/her in a class based on their age, prior dance knowledge, and skill level. If your dancer has not previously taken dance they may be better suited for a lower level class to get the attention they need to succeed as a dancer.

ACRO: Acro is a style of dance that combines jazz technique with acrobatic elements. This class is highly recommended for dancers who want to improve their flexibility and strength, as well as their dance and tumbling skills, while having a great time.

All dancers should reach the age requirement by May 1, 2015

Summer Dance fees cover the class for the duration of the summer. We do not have any costumes or shows during the summer season.

Strength training has been proven to benefit all populations, from adolescent athletes to seniors. Women, in particular, see tremendous benefits from strength training. Traditionally, women relied on cardiovascular activity and a low calorie diet to change their physical appearance. Unfortunately, low calorie diets merely punish the soul and decrease the metabolism. Without including consistent strength training in our program, effecting change can be an impossible goal. Strength training is absolutely essential if we wish to create visual changes in our bodies, and we’ve discovered that the benefits of strength training extend far beyond the visual.

WendyCity Tour: 1950s Nightlife in the Loop (EB) Wednesday, July 29

Registration Deadline: Friday, July 10

WendyCity tours are all about taking people back in time to experience the Chicago of an earlier era. And one of the most exciting eras to explore is the mid-twentieth century. My 1950s Nightlife tour is not so much a tour as it is an immersive experience. I share video, music, and evocative vintage images that bring the past to life. We begin in Chicago’s Theater District, exploring what’s going out in Chicago meant in the mid-twentieth century. Then it’s on to the two venues my guests love so much: The Berghoff with its quirky history and excellent beer and, finally, the great Palmer House Hotel. There we luxuriate in the grand lobby while enjoying classic drinks, appetizers, and/or dessert, all the while feasting on the fascinating story of the hotel and its royal couple, Potter and Bertha Palmer. We focus on the worldfamous Empire Room nightclub that hosted the biggest names in entertainment from the 1930s-1970s. Light appetizers and dessert are included. Drinks are on your own. Turner Park Grant Update On March 26, after weeks of negotiations with Governor Rauner, the General Assembly approved legislation to close the $1.6 billion budget gap for the remainder of the State’s fiscal year ending June 30, 2015. HB 318 (Madigan, M. / Steans, H.) includes approximately $1.4 billion in sweeps from 108 special funds. However, Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) was one of the only special funds that was NOT included in the $1.4 billion of fund sweeps! On behalf of the Board of Park Commissioners we would like to thank our citizen advocates, Senator Cullerton, Representative Mussman, Senator Kotowski, Representative Christine Winger and the Illinois Association of Park Districts. Funding for the Park and Recreational Facility Construction grant program (PARC) and the Museum Capital Grant program was also protected from fund sweeps. We applaud the Legislative Leaders and the members of the House and Senate as well as Governor Rauner for recognizing that PARC and OSLAD are an essential investment of dedicated funds that provides a substantial return to our community and state. This monumental achievement was the direct result of our collective advocacy efforts during the past several weeks. It is clear that our advocacy efforts were critical in explaining that PARC and OSLAD are different from other special funds because the fund balance is not a “surplus” but is obligated to existing projects that are in progress and for the FY15 projects

TURNER PARK

Preserving these dedicated funds from sweeps was a remarkable victory and an important first hurdle in our efforts to have the suspension lifted on OSLAD, PARC and Museum Capital Grant projects. We look forward to continuing to work with Governor Rauner and his administration to facilitate their review of our grant so that the suspension can be lifted. Thank you again for your support of IAPD’s advocacy efforts. Congratulations on making your voices heard.

In Case of an Error Complete details of program policies, procedures and guidelines are sometimes omitted from the program brochures because of space limitations. Also, errors in days, times, registration requirements and fees may occur as well. We apologize for any errors that may appear in the brochure. We thank you for your patience and understanding when these situations arise.

Program Room and Area Locations Sometimes Move Around! Program locations are subject to change. Roselle Park District staff reserves the right to make changes to room/area locations if deemed necessary for the participation and safety of all our registrants and programs. This type of flexibility is necessary to ensure that all planned program sessions can meet and activities can go as planned.

Register Early

Nothing ruins a good program quicker than everyone waiting until the last minute to register for it. There is a point where if there aren’t enough registrants to hold the program, it is cancelled. Coming in the day of, or the day before the program won’t resurrect it. Please register at least a week early to avoid disappointment.

Registration Policies Residency Not all Roselle residents are Roselle Park District residents. Even though you may have a Roselle address, you may pay taxes to another park district. Therefore, proof of residency is required when registering for programs for the first time. Roselle Park District residents support the district through property tax contributions.

Non Resident Fees Unless specified by a particular program, the non-resident program fee is an additional $10 or 50% of the regular fee, whichever is less. This does not apply to facility rentals. For all facility rentals, Clauss Recreation Center, or Turner Park, there is a consistent $25 increase for non-residents in addition to the stated resident fees.

Wait List Process A wait list is formed when a class reaches participant levels beyond the maximum. The wait list is designed to maintain interested people in a holding area until more spaces in the program are available, someone drops out, transfers, or a new section is added by park district staff based on interest. The wait list is maintained based on the order we process registrations. Customers will be contacted for confirmation before being added to one of our wait lists (or transferred from a wait list into the desired program) by the front desk or specific program supervisor. Please note: before a participant is transferred into a program all corresponding paperwork and payments are required.
