‘Pride of The Community’

Chairman’s Chat

As you will be aware Garry has stepped down from Managing the team, he is taking a break for a while. I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of everyone at New Mills AFC to sincerely thank Garry for all his efforts not just with Managing the team and all the work that goes along with that role but with all his efforts to promote and develop the club off the pitch, working on the ground, painting and joining the Committee. A great big round of applause from all the Millers, when he is rested he will be itching to get back involved at the club and will receive a warm welcome, cheers Garry On to the football, Paul along with Dougie and James have taken over the Management of the team with a positive start. In the Derbyshire Senior Cup we travelled to Shirebrook and were victorious with a 0-1 win in what was a dour contest. Then onto Saturday to face Squires Gate in the Macron Cup, the first half was evenly matched even so we made quite a few good chances.

Coming out for the second half we straight away took the game to the home team and never let them back into the match scoring with a great free kick from Hibbo. We missed a glut of great chances but in fairness they never really threatened and we ran out comfortable winners in what was probably our best performance of the season. Our midweek game was at Hanley Town where was gained a valuable point well done boys. So onto todays visit and a warm welcome to Atherton Colleries, players, officials and supporters who have had a good start to the season, welcome to Church Lane and we hope you enjoy the day (but not by winning!) Thanks Ray Coverley Chairman New Mills AFC

Matchday Programme 2016/17 New Mills AFC, based in the High Peak of Derbyshire, have continually been at the forefront of organised football in the area. The Club's home ground, regarded as one of the most picturesque in non-league football, is situated opposite the impressive St George’s Church and has a splendid backdrop of Kinder Scout, which is the highest point in the Peak District National Park. The Club’s facilities are quite considerable. Covering well over three acres of land, the Club has a floodlit playing arena, an all-weather pitch suitable for a number of sports which is used by local schools and the local community in general as well as a thriving Clubhouse. The game of football has been played in the town of New Mills since 1886 when the Club, originally known as New Mills St George's, first played in friendlies before joining organisations such as The North Cheshire League and ultimately The Manchester League. After playing at several grounds, the Club moved to their present home of Church Lane in 1922 and this coincided with a hugely successful period in the Club's history as they recorded two Manchester League titles and four Derbyshire Divisional Cup wins. These successes lead to average home crowds of around 2,000 and eventually saw no fewer than six players transferred to Football League Clubs.

More great days followed in the 1960's under the leadership of Joe Martin but following a move to The Cheshire League in 1974, lean times eventually lead to New Mills ceasing playing.

Fortunately, local amateur side Birch Vale and Thornsett FC were looking for a new ground and within twelve months, they had adopted the name of New Mills and began to progress firstly via The Lancashire and Cheshire League and then The Manchester League. New Mills re-joined The North West Counties League in 2004 ( they were founding members in 1982 ) and enjoyed another successful period under the guidance of manager Tony Hancock and assistant Paul Kirkham. After winning the Second Division Trophy in 2007, the following season saw the team break numerous Club records as they won the Division Two Championship by ten points. 2008/09 saw another trophy triumph, The League Challenge Cup, but following an unprecedented twenty one game winning run, promotion to The Unibond League was only denied by a last day defeat at AFC Fylde which resulted in the team finishing runners up on goal difference.

2010/11 proved to be a case of third time lucky as New Mills finally achieved their goal of promotion to The Northern Premier League when they won The North West Counties Premier Division.

The team also reached the North West Counties League Challenge Cup Final but failed to achieve the double after losing narrowly to Winsford United. 2011/12 represented a significant landmark as the Club celebrated its 125th Anniversary. Amongst many events which took place, probably the biggest saw Manchester United play a friendly game at Church Lane and the publication of “ The Millers Tale“, a book chronicling the history of the Club. That year also saw the first team’s debut season in The Evo Stik Northern Premier League and after being placed in Division One South, the eventual position of ninth represented a respectable finish. 2012/13 proved to be another roller-coaster ten months. It was all change as the first team were reallocated into The Northern Division and new manager Roy Soule lead his side into the play offs where they were eventually beaten in the semi-final by two extra time strikes from Trafford.

The reserves secured the Club’s ninth Derbyshire FA Divisional Cup North success following a thrilling 5-4 victory over Dove Holes at Silverlands, the home of Buxton FC, in April. The Club’s Under 18 side, which further developed the working relationship with New Mills Juniors, also brought some silverware to Church Lane as they celebrated their inaugural season in The Stockport Metro Junior Football League by winning The Division Two title.

2013/14 was an all-together more trickier season with the Club having to overcome many hurdles, none more so than contending with the wettest High Peak winter in living memory which produced the inevitable March / April fixture backlog. The first team, who endured a high turnover of playing staff, eventually ended in a mid-table position in Division One North whilst the reserves finished as runners up to Glossop North End in The North West Counties Football League. The bright spark was once again provided by the Club’s youth team who lost only one game as they won The Stockport Metro Junior Football League Division One Championship by a fourteen point margin. The highlight of 2014/15 was undoubtedly provided again by the Under 18’s who completed the perfect League season – eighteen wins from eighteen games. A good number of these young players were duly incorporated into the Club’s new Development Squad who finished in a very creditable mid-table position in The Western Division of The Lancashire League. Unfortunately the first team endured a campaign of almost constant struggle and were only reprieved from relegation back to The North West Counties Football League by The Football Association in May. Manager Roy Soule, who worked tirelessly during his tenure at Church Lane, tendered his resignation during the summer and was subsequently replaced by former Stalybridge Celtic assistant Andy Fearn. In 2015/16 season Andy Fearn left the club less than 10 games into the season. Ex-Glossop manager Garry Brown took charge but couldn't prevent the club being relegated to the Hallmark Security League where the club will play in the 2016/17 season.

Over the last few weeks a lot of hard work has been going on behind the scenes here at New Mills AFC in trying to maintain the professionalism at the club which was installed by previous manager Garry Brown, who took a back seat at the club a few weeks ago. Everybody at the club wishes him all the best in the future with whatever role he decides to take on going forward. The club have moved forward appointing Myself (Daniel Douglas-Pringle), Paul Williams and James Kinsley, one of our main objectives is to maintain the clubs core values which were installed at the beginning of the season. The Millers have seen just one defeat in past 5 games, a 4-3 defeat in the FA Vase to Radford FC who scored the winner in extra time as Millers came back from 3 nil down with 17 minutes to play to make it 3-3 and take the tie into extra time.

The past 5 games has seen a positive response from the players to Elaine Lowe the changesCredit: at the club and the management team believe things are beginning to "click" amongst them on the pitch but there is still work to be done. There seems to be a new fighting spirit which didn't exist last season, we have shown the ability to bounce back from being behind numerous times this season.

We must now start to push forward and pick up points in the league starting today against Atherton who are a decent side but we believe we can match them resulting in both sides putting on a display of football at Church Lane in this fixture. We want to deliver the points to our fans and supporters today. Thanks for your support at home and away

Dougie Proud to be Managing New Mills AFC

Saturday 1st October 2016 I Macron League Challenge Cup I School Road I Att: 51

It was the third and final part of a string of cup games in a week where the Millers took on Radford, Shirebrook & Squires Gate. The Millers competed well in the first half of this encounter but the cutting edge was lacking. Just after the second half the Millers took the lead through a Ryan Hibbert free kick and they comfortably defended their lead. Tunde Owolabi & Daniel Douglas-Pringle had some good chances throughout the second half but New Mills ran out 1-0 and progressed to the next round to face Silsden at home later this month. Matchday Programme 2016/17 Founded: 1916 Ground: Kensite Stadium Manager: Michael Clegg 2015/16: 3rd Twitter: @ACFC1916 Home Kit: Black & White Shirts, Blacks Shorts & Socks Away Kit: Yellow Shirts, Shorts & Socks County FA: Lancashire FA Record Att: 3300 in Lancashire Combination 1920’s Atherton Collieries Football Club was established in 1916 by miners from the six pits which were then operative within the old urban district of Atherton. The football club became the latest part of an ever growing sports group that was organised by the Atherton Collieries Joint Association. Between 1919 and 1965 the club were winners of the Bolton Combination League ten times. Collieries established a noted reputation in Lancashire and by 1964-65 had won the Lancashire Junior Shield six times, a record which is still unsurpassed. They joined the North West Counties League as founder members in 1982, winning the third division in 1986-87.

Steady progress off the pitch, with floodlights being erected in 1994, was matched by progress on the pitch as Colls final league position improved season on season. This culminated in promotion to the first division after finishing the 1995-96 season as runners-up to Vauxhall GM. Colls suffered mixed fortunes during their tenure in the NWCFL Premier Division. Their best season came in 2006-07 when they finished in seventh place under Phil Brown. This remains the highest position the club have ever finished in the English Pyramid. During 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons Anthony Pilkington made 35 appearances for the club scoring 19 goals. Three of these goals came in the away match at FC United which Collieries infamously won 3-0. This caught the attention of many local clubs and it was Stockport County who secured his services. The striker has since played for Huddersfield Town, Norwich City and the Republic of Ireland.

The club were relegated from the Premier Division at the end of the 2008/09 campaign and Steve Pilling was appointed manager in August 2009. In 2010/11 the club won their first NWCFL silverware for decades when AFC Liverpool were beaten 3-2 (aet) in the First Division Trophy Final at Valley Road, Flixton. Season 2011/12 saw the club finish fourth in the First Division but another trophy was added to the honours board. The Bolton Hospital Cup was won for the first time in 25 years with a penalty shootout triumph over Eagley. The Reebok final had ended 2-2 with Gary Burnett scoring both Collieries goals as he put in a man of the match performance. Seasons 2012/13 and 2013/14 saw the team lead the NWCFL First Division in the early stages but fall away towards the end. Steve Pilling was a committed servant to the club and in his five seasons at the club the team finished in 6th, 5th, 4th, 4th and 5th position respectively. Michael Clegg took over the managerial reins at the commencement of the 2014/15 campaign. He had previously enjoyed stints at near neighbours Pennington and Atherton LR. With the help of strong backroom support and local players he stated that he wanted to gain promotion with a side that would consist of Atherton based players. An opening day win at Cammell Laird, who went on to finish runners up, set high standards for the rest of the campaign. What followed was to be the club’s best season in their history.

An opening day win at Cammell Laird, who went on to finish runners up, set high standards for the rest of the campaign. What followed was to be the club’s best season in their history. Promotion back to the NWCFL Premier Division was clinched with a memorable 30 victory at Atherton LR on Easter Monday. Five matches after this, Collieries travelled to Cheadle Town for a midweek match knowing that a win would see them mathematically win the league. The score was 1-1 going into the final few minutes when Luke Gibson scored to send a large away following into raptures. A proud moment for the club came when they reached the Lancashire Trophy SemiFinal which was staged at Leyland. Ashton Athletic, Radcliffe Borough and Ramsbottom United were all dispatched as Colls set up a tie with Clitheroe. Despite their best efforts, Colls couldn’t overcome a strong and experienced opposition and lost 2-0. Back in the Premier Division for the first time in six years, Collieries managed to finish third behind Runcorn Linnets and Colne. The League Challenge Cup was also won for the first time, convincingly beating league champions Colne in the final on an unforgettable night at Fleetwood Town's Highbury Stadium.

Matchday Programme 2016/17 Words by Alan Jones A selection of interesting facts and feats which have occurred during the 130 years of football here in New Mills. More in the next programme

Great Start We all know that last season was our worst ever and obviously so was our start. However, probably the best start we ever had to a campaign was in season 1968/9 when we did not lose in our opening 19 fixtures. The first side to beat us was Manchester University.

Ouch! During a match against Faifield in the Kennedy Cup in 1961 firstly Les Swann broke his wrist followed quickly by Neville Wyatt who fractured his ankle. This was before the days of substitutes, but the Millers still went on to win the game 4-0.

Saved by the fog During 1959/60 season and New Mills were entertaining Ashton National here at Church Lane in the Manchester Junior Cup...

All was not going well and the team were losing 3-4 when after 74 minutes the referee abandoned the game due to a thick fog. Flying winger Harry Shipman scored a hat trick for New Mills and when the game was replayed seven days later he also bagged a hat trick as the Millers ran out 4-1 winners.

Schoolboys Triumph Having no fixture on February 23rd, 1957 the Millers decided to have a friendly game against the local Grammar School. No fewer than five first team regulars were in the side which were beaten 4-3 by the youth of the town.

He didn’t Miss! On September 26th, 1999 Rick Jones playing for the Youth Team hit five goals in a 53 away win at Daten Sports. Four of these were from the penalty spot and one of them had to be retaken – Rick coolly despatched that one as well.
