‘Pride of The Community’

Secretary’s Notes: Welcome to the first home pre-season friendly for the 2016/2017 season I would like to thank Sheffield United for agreeing to the game and welcome Officials, fans and playing staff to Church Lane.

This club is for New Mills and the Community to use and enjoy the facilities if you have any ideas please speak to any of the Committee or write it down and put in the suggestions box in the Clubhouse.

The Committee and volunteers over the closed season have been really busy both on and off the pitch we took on board a number of thoughts and ideas that came forward in the Fans Forum and from fans approaching the Committee with feedback.

Garry has worked tirelessly to bring in players, coaching staff and the best possible environment for the team to work together as a family. We have appointed two quality Managers in James with the Development Squad and Daniel with the U18's who are already working closely with Garry and progressing players through will be future for NMAFC. AFC Millers are playing at the ground again on Sunday mornings this season and New Mills U15's will also be playing at Church Lane

We are working hard to provide the teams with a good facility and equipment to continue the professionalism New Mills AFC is known for across the Leagues. We have had a warm welcome from the Hallmark Security League (NWCFL) League Committee and a complimentary exit from the Evostik League Committee who commended the club on the professionalism we showed as a club in a very difficult season. Last season is now, as Garry and the squad say is behind us, we look forward not backwards and the vision is bouncing back to the Evostik as quickly as possible. I would like to take time out to thank all the volunteers who have given up time over the last few weeks/ months some for many hours and some for only a few but even a couple of hours is much appreciated and we have made some good friends along the way. The Committee want to develop stronger links with New Mills Juniors and we will be inviting the teams to come down and put on coaching courses for them over the season.

As you can see we still have work to do around the ground and if anyone can spare any time to finish off the painting of the posts around the ground and general tidying up it would be much appreciated ready for our first home game on 13th of August, Smiths Coaches are working with the club to provide away transport to all away Saturday games as a very reasonable cost of £12 return so please support them and travel with the team - the vocal support of fans is really appreciated but especially at away games. In summary I hope that you can see the hard work that has gone into the club over the closed season and if you have a few hours to spare, then please get involved. Hopefully today is the start of a fantastic season.

Matchday Programme 2016/17 New Mills AFC, based in the High Peak of Derbyshire, have continually been at the forefront of organised football in the area. The Club's home ground, regarded as one of the most picturesque in non-league football, is situated opposite the impressive St George’s Church and has a splendid backdrop of Kinder Scout, which is the highest point in the Peak District National Park. The Club’s facilities are quite considerable. Covering well over three acres of land, the Club has a floodlit playing arena, an all-weather pitch suitable for a number of sports which is used by local schools and the local community in general as well as a thriving Clubhouse. The game of football has been played in the town of New Mills since 1886 when the Club, originally known as New Mills St George's, first played in friendlies before joining organisations such as The North Cheshire League and ultimately The Manchester League. After playing at several grounds, the Club moved to their present home of Church Lane in 1922 and this coincided with a hugely successful period in the Club's history as they recorded two Manchester League titles and four Derbyshire Divisional Cup wins. These successes lead to average home crowds of around 2,000 and eventually saw no fewer than six players transferred to Football League Clubs.

More great days followed in the 1960's under the leadership of Joe Martin but following a move to The Cheshire League in 1974, lean times eventually lead to New Mills ceasing playing.

Fortunately, local amateur side Birch Vale and Thornsett FC were looking for a new ground and within twelve months, they had adopted the name of New Mills and began to progress firstly via The Lancashire and Cheshire League and then The Manchester League. New Mills re-joined The North West Counties League in 2004 ( they were founding members in 1982 ) and enjoyed another successful period under the guidance of manager Tony Hancock and assistant Paul Kirkham. After winning the Second Division Trophy in 2007, the following season saw the team break numerous Club records as they won the Division Two Championship by ten points. 2008/09 saw another trophy triumph, The League Challenge Cup, but following an unprecedented twenty one game winning run, promotion to The Unibond League was only denied by a last day defeat at AFC Fylde which resulted in the team finishing runners up on goal difference.

2010/11 proved to be a case of third time lucky as New Mills finally achieved their goal of promotion to The Northern Premier League when they won The North West Counties Premier Division.

The team also reached the North West Counties League Challenge Cup Final but failed to achieve the double after losing narrowly to Winsford United. 2011/12 represented a significant landmark as the Club celebrated its 125th Anniversary. Amongst many events which took place, probably the biggest saw Manchester United play a friendly game at Church Lane and the publication of “ The Millers Tale“, a book chronicling the history of the Club. That year also saw the first team’s debut season in The Evo Stik Northern Premier League and after being placed in Division One South, the eventual position of ninth represented a respectable finish. 2012/13 proved to be another roller-coaster ten months. It was all change as the first team were reallocated into The Northern Division and new manager Roy Soule lead his side into the play offs where they were eventually beaten in the semi-final by two extra time strikes from Trafford.

The reserves secured the Club’s ninth Derbyshire FA Divisional Cup North success following a thrilling 5-4 victory over Dove Holes at Silverlands, the home of Buxton FC, in April. The Club’s Under 18 side, which further developed the working relationship with New Mills Juniors, also brought some silverware to Church Lane as they celebrated their inaugural season in The Stockport Metro Junior Football League by winning The Division Two title.

2013/14 was an all-together more trickier season with the Club having to overcome many hurdles, none more so than contending with the wettest High Peak winter in living memory which produced the inevitable March / April fixture backlog. The first team, who endured a high turnover of playing staff, eventually ended in a mid-table position in Division One North whilst the reserves finished as runners up to Glossop North End in The North West Counties Football League. The bright spark was once again provided by the Club’s youth team who lost only one game as they won The Stockport Metro Junior Football League Division One Championship by a fourteen point margin. The highlight of 2014/15 was undoubtedly provided again by the Under 18’s who completed the perfect League season – eighteen wins from eighteen games. A good number of these young players were duly incorporated into the Club’s new Development Squad who finished in a very creditable mid-table position in The Western Division of The Lancashire League. Unfortunately the first team endured a campaign of almost constant struggle and were only reprieved from relegation back to The North West Counties Football League by The Football Association in May. Manager Roy Soule, who worked tirelessly during his tenure at Church Lane, tendered his resignation during the summer and was subsequently replaced by former Stalybridge Celtic assistant Andy Fearn. In 2015/16 season Andy Fearn left the club less than 10 games into the season. Ex-Glossop manager Garry Brown took charge but couldn't prevent the club being relegated to the Hallmark Security League where the club will play in the 2016/17 season.

Hello all Millers supporters and welcome back to Church Lane. A new season is already upon us and our preparations will put us in good stead for the new season within the Hallmark Security Premier League. The lads have been called into pre season early and have worked hard on fitness and have also bonded well, however nothing is better than games to prepare us and get us ready fort when we commence competition matches on August 6th . There are some familiar faces within the team as we are delighted that key players have agreed to stay. We have added new players to the squad and as always include players from pro clubs who we want to play a part in their development and help them achieve their aspirations within football. Over 40 players have tried out during pre season and we have reduced that to 25 . The pre season games are about identifying the strongest eleven and creating team expectations within play in readiness for the league campaign . We definitely have competition for places and the lads are under no illusion that they will have to work hard to get and keep their shirt. Closed season has been hectic to say the least but very rewarding with the management team and committee working tirelessly to bring about positive. A new development manager James Kinsey, bringing a new and exciting team of good players pushing for first team squad positions.

A local coach , Daniel Tweedie taking the reigns of the under 18s and another local coach Dan Greaves working alongside the first team coaching staff as part of his development and experience. All positive steps in creating a community club we can Credit: belong to and be proud of.Elaine Lowe We must thank everyone who has volunteered to help bring the pitch and ground up to scratch as well as decorating the club house. All volunteers who have given up their free time deserve great credit and we thank you sincerely. We cannot get through without the support of volunteers and would like to invite anyone who is interested in joining us. You will be made most welcome. There are plenty of positives around the club including new exciting links with local business too. We value their support and it's great to see the community helping each other. We feel we are embarking on a new era now and we need everyone behind us.. Our aims are to get back to the Evo-Stik League and a period of stability will be good for the club .. I can assure everyone that we will work hard to bring success back to New Mills . I have the club at heart , I believe in loyalty, hard work and commitment and expect that of players that play for New Mills AFC too. We now have to ensure that we have the correct structure within the club from juniors right through to first team that can sustain the demands of Evo Stik football and hopefully plans that will help us bring sustainable income to compete evo stik level . As always I am available and approachable in the bar after games to have a chat with anyone . Here's to a successful season. Up the Millers Thank you for your support Garry

1874 announce ground plans, Sandbach add to coaching staff and Colne v Colls in relaunched cup competition. 1874 Northwich have announced the latest step towards establishing a permanent base for the club in Northwich. The club has appointed the Preston based Frank Whittle Partnership (FWP), one the of the UK’s most respected and experienced sports stadia designers, to deliver a plan for a new ground in Northwich. The move by the club is the latest step towards developing a permanent base for the club in Northwich that can grow as the club develops on and off the pitch, and can also be used as a ‘hub’ for the local sporting and wider community.

Sandbach United have announced that the former Nigerian international Efe Sodje the coaching staff for their pre-season training schedule and warm up matches. Sodje brings with him a wealth of playing experience, not only from his time as a professional at Macclesfield, Bury, Yeovil, Huddersfield and Crewe Alexandra but also international experience from his 12 appearances for Nigeria. Regular supporters might recognise a new face around Church Lane in the coming season. Stand-up comedian and respected football writer and blogger Carl Jones will be following our progress this season as we begin our campaign in the Hallmark Security League. Jones has a particular interest in nonleague and has written about it with passion and humour over the past two seasons. Carl said: “I became aware of New Mills last season during the heightened media coverage which coincided with a gig I played in the town. My immediate feelings were that the Club were being unfairly caricatured during what was clearly a difficult spell. I wanted to find out more about the people behind the headlines.” He continues: “I know from experience that grassroots football is a labour of love, not least for the volunteers who work so tirelessly behind the scenes and often with little or no reward. I’d like to be able to tell just a small part of the story as New Mills build the foundations to get themselves that

long-awaited win as they start their campaign to return to the Evostik”. Carl adds: “I’ve already received a wonderfully warm welcome at the Club and I sense a really positive feeling about the season ahead. I can’t wait to get started and meet some of the characters, which will hopefully include some of the match-going fans who’ve remained loyal through a difficult campaign. I hope they get their reward soon.” Club Secretary Sue Hyde said: “Meeting and talking to Carl has been really good he has a great knowledge of non league football and everyone on the Committee at New Mills AFC is keen to work with Carl. He is a charming man and has a great sense of humour I am sure all the fans will have a story to tell and we look forward to reading the ongoing story of the Millers" Full story and quotes are on the club website: www.newmills-afc.co.uk

The Development Squad travelled to Uppermill to continue their pre -season preparations. The Millers ended up losing to Manchester League side Uppermill 3-1 and manager James Kinsey spoke about the game: "It was a game that we had all the ball but didn’t do much with it. Another 90 minutes under our belt and it was a good chance to get a look at some new players. We need to pick up the fitness levels over the next few weeks as we seemed a bit sluggish at times. But we are getting closer to where we want to be overall". Next up they play Cheshire Premier Division side Styal away on the 23rd of July.
