Pride of Wythenshawe

Wythenshawe Town History…. Formed in 1946, and playing at Hough End Fields on Princess Road, Withington, Wythenshawe Town were originally known as North Withington FC, but were eventually re-named in 1987; after a few seasons at their new ground in Wythenshawe. The ground was named Ericstan Park as a tribute to Eric Reynard and Stan Orme who were prime movers in the club's early days.

LEE BENNETT ‘Pride Of Wythenshawe’

Welcome all back to Ericstan Park for today’s game against Daten. I hope everyone has had a safe journey here today. There is only one place to start and that’s the 0-11 away win at Penlake. It was a superb performance from everyone in the team chipping in. It could have been a lot more, the new players are starting to get a great understanding of how this team works together. We have started so positively, the opening game against Tarporley Victoria was another excellent performance from the team, to score 16 goals in the opening two games is well above our expectations. But in addition to the prolific strikeforce, our defence has paired with that nicely, keeping two clean sheets already. This month presents a huge opportunity to get points on the board quickly with only 1 of the first 8 games being a cup game, it allows us to try and get a foothold in the league. I have seen so much of the club since I’ve joined and I’m delighted to be here. The fanbase is far greater than most Step 7 clubs and that’s a great platform for the club going forward. The players know they can count on the support of the fans and volunteers and it’s a real lift getting big crowds. So I hope I see more of the fans throughout the season.

There have been some interesting results in this league already with some big wins, tight games and shock results. We can’t read into the results too much, but all will become much clearer by the end of the month. Onto today’s game, we’re playing Daten. They’ll be disappointed to only be on 1 point at this stage but they do get a very good result away at Middlewich Town. They are a strong outfit, they finished 5th last season and they’ll want to build on top of that this season and I’m sure promotion is their aim this season. It’ll be a tough game today, the 18:30 kick-off is a difficult time for players, they need to quickly adapt to the game, as they have to have the mind fully focused for the game. We have prepared well for today’s game, I feel everyone has had good game time and will be raring and fit for the game today. Let’s get behind the side this today, and I hope to see you again on Saturday when we welcome Middlewich Town to Ericstan Park. ENJOY THE GAME, Lee Bennett

DOMINANT ONE SIDED AFFAIR FOR WYTHENSHAWE Wythenshawe Town travelled to Penlake in their first away game in Cheshire League 1. Jason Walley and Colin Murray got themselves on the scoresheet before half-time, whilst Dean scored his second of the half. James Green scored a first half hat-trick. After half-time Wythenshawe maintained the high possession of the ball but struggled to get clear cut chances as Penlake played damage limitation but Colin Murray broke the second half deadlock with a superb volley. Matchday Programme 2015/16

Welcome back to Ericstan Park as we welcome Daten FC, for our first midweek game in Cheshire League 1. The club has already made big strides in the past few weeks on the pitch as we have scored 16 goals in just 2 games and kept two clean sheets. We are building a very strong squad which will bring a great amount of development to the club. We are delighted to announce the cup competitions which we are playing in this season. We will play in the Altrincham FA Senior Cup again after last season’s triumph; we want to defend our crown and prove ourselves as worthy winners yet again, and with a final at Altrincham FC it’s a great competition to win. Secondly we are competing in the Manchester FA Saturday Challenge Trophy. This competition is the level up from last season’s Manchester FA Cup that we competed in. It was won by AVRO and we no it’ll be no mean feat to win the cup. We are still very much on the lookout for sponsors and volunteers, the vital support of any football club. On the sponsorship side, we are able to offer fantastic exposure for any business and provide the best possible value on your sponsorship. With regards to the volunteers, we need people to help in every aspect of the matchday and away from the pitch. If you are interested, just speak to me and I can tell you where we need help. This club is making steps towards bringing semi-pro football to Wythenshawe, this won’t be accomplished without the support of everyone. I hope to see our fantastic support at every game getting behind the team. We are getting towards our target but there is some much for the club to achieve, be a part of it. Enjoy The Game, Kenny Hope Wythenshawe Town

Matchday Programme 2015/16

Lee Bennett has announced the 5 new signings for the coming season 5 new players have joined Wythenshawe Town for the coming season. Firstly striker James Green, who scored 2 goals against Tarporley Victoria, signs after previously playing for Chorltonians. Colin Murray will provide options on the wing, is a previous Bolton Academy player. Ashley McGrath, full back will bolster the squad. A familiar player to Lee Bennett playing under him at Old Alts and Hindsford.

The last two players have both played at Altrincham. Louis Brown can fill many positions in midfield and played 20 times for our league rivals Altrincham Reserves, scoring 6 times for them last season. The other is Jimmy McCarthy, a very experienced midfielder who has commanded four figure transfer fee in the past when moving to AFC Fylde and has played in the Conference Premier for Altrincham. He featured heavily for Northern Premier League sides Trafford and Kidsgrove Athletic last season.

Lee Bennett had his say on his new additions to the squad. “These players are who to provide more strength and depth. I have kept the core of the squad from last season as they are fantastic players who have achieved a lot last season. They will not walk straight into the team, they will work hard for their place, and the competition for places should lift the squad massively this season.

Colin Murray is new to the Wythenshawe Town squad this season after playing for Chorltonians last season. The ‘Town Review’ caught up with Colin to hear about his expectations for the coming season after an impressive start. “It’s great to join Wythenshawe Town this season, last season clearly was a fantastic one to be a part of and hopefully we can replicate something similar this season. What’s become apparent quite quickly is the strength of the team, when you join a new team and league, you don’t know what to expect but there is quality in every position in this team which will enable us to compete highly in every game this season. We’ve had two fantastic performances already winning 5-0 and 11-0.

Both games the team played brilliantly, and dominated possession and played some great football. Those two results then increase the expectations that we and fans will have on us and we know that we’ll need to perform to those expectations. People musn’t get ahead of themselves, there a lot of extremely tough games coming up and we must perform if we want results, if we don’t work we won’t meet our own requirements. Today’s game presents another tough challenge against a team who finished 5th last season and will come who knowing they can win the game so we must perform today. Enjoy The Game, Colin Murray

Matchday Programme 2015/16

Check out George Cheetham’s blog at manchopper.wordpress.com Amateur Football?....It's Getting Better & Better! I have become more and more familiar with the workings, and the standards, of the Step 7/8 leagues as the last couple of years have progressed. Some of you may already be familiar with my blogs and will have seen the number of visits I've made to clubs in the Cheshire, Manchester, West Cheshire and West Lancashire Leagues. One thing I have noticed is how much the standard has improved on the field, since my early delves into this level, watching West Didsbury & Chorlton when they competed in the Manchester League and Trafford's Reserve side, who competed in the Cheshire League, until they folded a few years back. Since then, the standards of football has improved markedly. There are more sides now trying to play the game, rather than kicking it high, kicking each other, or playing a last minute "hail Mary" ball throughout the first 89 too. I think this is largely down to the fact that every year, young players are released by league clubs and are forced down the pyramid to the Step 3, 4 and 5 teams. This, in turn, forces a high number of players who were playing in the North West Counties, for example, down into the "amateur" ranks, from the perceived semi-pro divisions. Add to this the players who decide that the travel in the higher divisions isn't worthwhile, plus those with a change in work commitments that mean they can't commit to higher level football, plus the additions of higher level side's Reserve teams all mean that Step 7/8 football, as a whole, improves year on year. Of course, these happenings also mean that more players who were playing in the Cheshire Premier, for example, could find themselves out of a first eleven and be looking for somewhere else to play. They then find themselves at the level that Wythenshawe Town currently find themselves competing at. Of course, the vast majority of Wythenshawe's side could, and in some cases should, be playing at a higher level, but a lot of players in this division, and this isn't meant as a put down, are here because the circumstances above have forced them down as young, ex-academy talent have become available. Should they be required to, they would easily make the step back up as, for me, the difference between Cheshire League football and Counties First Division football is minimal. Fitness is the main difference, the quality is very similar.

This is only my view, of course, but I think that you will find that next years Step 7/8 leagues will be better than this years, the year after's better again and so on. Throw into the mix that the likes of Wythenshawe Town, Prestwich Heys (Manchester League) and perhaps the likes of Charnock Richard will be applying to join the system next season, this will only increase the player pool in those leagues and the above sides will most likely look to improve their squads for their forays into the pyramid system. The resultant knock-on effect is the same. Good players being forced down, making the lower leagues ever stronger and more competitive. This can only be good going forwards and likely keeps the English amateur footballing ranks in rude health for many years to come.

Next Up WTFC v Middlewich Town August 22nd Admission: £2/£1/Free Ericstan Park On Saturday we welcome Middlewich Town to Ericstan Park which is the 2nd of 4 consecutive home matches for Wythenshawe. Middlewich Town finished 3rd last season in Cheshire League 1 but were far off the promotion spots as Malpas and Congleton Vale dominated the league in 2014/15. They were knocked out of the J A Walton Challenge Cup at the Quarter Final stage, losing to Altrincham Reserves. Altrincham went on to play Wythenshawe in the semi-final.

Lee Bennett has his say on the Middlewich Town fixture, “This game will be an extremely tough one. Many have tipped them for great success this season and that is down to their fantastic management and players who will provide us with a close encounter. Middlewich finished 3rd last time out but now have another for promotion and they will be wanting to take maximum points on Saturday. We have to perform and well if we want to get anything out of the game. We need your support on Saturday for another crucial home game”. Support the team on another important home game. More build-up to the game will be on Twitter and Facebook along with our website: wythenshawetownfc.co.uk
