Unicorn Athletic JFC History…. Unicorn Athletic were formed in 1977 and have predominately been running as a Junior football club for the past 38 years having many successes up to youth football.
In the last few seasons the club has expanded in to adult football seeing the adult’s side coming runners-up 2 years on the bounce in the Broadheath Central Cup, being beat in extra time in both finals and finishing 3rd in the Altrincham & District League before we made the step up to The Hallmark Security Cheshire League. The move to the Cheshire League saw a move in stadia for Unicorn. Smiths Field was the home for the 1st XI but now first team games are played at Valley Road stadium as we look to work ourselves up the non-league pyramid. The club has over 400 players and 40+ coaches with many teams and success in the junior and youth squads.

DAVE POTTER “I would like to welcome everyone to Valley Road for this J A Walton Challenge Cup group stage fixture against fellow Cheshire League 2 side West Didsbury & Chorlton Reserves. I hope you enjoy your time here with Unicorn Athletic today. Onto today’s encounter which is yet another local derby where we face West Didsbury & Chorlton Reserves for the 3rd time this season, they are quickly becoming familiar faces amongst the Unicorn team. As we know from the last game these are no mugs and if we aren't at the races we will get punished by a very good side who can play football and can compete extremely well. Remember this isn't the league this is cup football and we will be gunning for them as we need a lift in fortune and I firmly believe the J A Walton Cup can provide us with that. I personally love cup fever bring it on. Enjoy the game, and we hope it’s entertaining game”.

Jim Hines’ West Didsbury & Chorlton Reserves are the visitors to Valley Road today. HOME GROUND: Brookburn Road FORMED: 1908 FORM: WWLLLL
2014/15 LEAGUE FINISH: 7th Manager: Jim Hines
West Didsbury & Chorlton Football Club were formed in 1908 as Christchurch AFC and they joined the Manchester Alliance League. In the 1920-21 season the club changed it’s name to West Didsbury AFC and joined the Lancashire and Cheshire league. In 2006 the team joined the Manchester League Division 1 and were crowned champions in 2010-11, in the following season they competed in the F A Vase and were knocked out by Ashville. The next season the club had its application to the NWCFL accepted.
In 2013-14 WD&C finished 3rd in Division 1 but were promoted due to Formby’s failure to meet ground criteria for the Premier Division. Their Reserves side joined the NWCFL Reserves league but in 2014 the league folded and WD&C joined Cheshire League 2. They were led by James Plowright and in their first season the side finished 7th in the league won by Wythenshawe Town. Jim Hines took charge of the squad after James Plowright left to join the coaching set-up at NWCFL side Cheadle Town

So what's been happing at Unicorn in recent months ? Manager Dave Potter spoke to us about the season so far with news about the squad.
“To be honest we have been shell shocked since the Knutsford Cup game. We haven't been able to field a consistent starting 11 once this season and confidence is a little fragile at the moment. In the last 7 or 8 games we haven't played bad in all of them and luck just hasn't been on our side in some games like the Halebank league game where we were 1-0 up and probably the better side and end up losing 3-1, giving away a penalty. West Didsbury and Chorlton Reserves match saw 4 deflected goals. But on the same note we have also turned off in games like Mersey Valley we fell asleep and got battered 7-3. We have lost a few players along the way and in the last few weeks we have heavily recruited to help stop the trend. The first of the new signings is Ryan Stewart who joins us from 1874 Northwich. Ryan is a left sided midfielder with great energy and a vocal player which will be pivotal for this team going forward. Another addition from 1874 Northwich is Chris Lunn a smart finishing striker. James Arnold joins from a club we have a few connections with and that is New Mills, James is a hard working striker who will give our attacking options a bolster. The final two signings are Tom Werring, a former Trafford and New Mills central , midfielder. Paul Lewis, a former West Didsbury & Chorlton Midfielder. They all bring experience of high level football and that will be great for the team for the remaining part of the season. As well as all those new faces we have stepped up our training with Richardson Sport. Wayne has been putting the lads through their paces and to be honest the lads look good. Its only a matter of time before we turn the corner and get this season back on track.

Next Up Unicorn Athletic v Moore United December 12th Admission: Free Valley Road, Flixton Next up for Unicorn Athletic is another home game when Warrington based Moore United make the trip over to Flixton in league action. Moore United currently sit just one place below Unicorn in the league table but have a number of games in hand, a tight and tough encounter Manager Dave Potter had his say on the game, “Another tough game coming up for us in the coming weeks which we will have to prepare well for otherwise we will be made to pay.
I’m looking forward to it though, a match which I really think will be a good one for both sides. We’ve not played Moore United yet so there is that feeling of the unknown but we will prepare no differently”. Another big game and we need your support down at Valley Road for this important home game. Kick-Off is 14:00 and let’s get a big crowd behind us.
There will be some build up on the club’s Twitter and Facebook pages so make sure you’re keeping updated with the latest Unicorn news.
