I am so inspired by the theme of DreamBIG 21: Be Curious. Curiosity is the spark that lights creativity, innovation and discovery. Curiosity about life and the world around us inspires both artists and audiences and is at the heart of our shared experience of the arts. Children who are encouraged to be curious may become our future leaders and innovators. Curiosity serves us well throughout our lives and is the basis of our brightest ideas. DreamBIG is woven into the fabric of our collective history as South Australians. Since 1974, more than 2 million children from across the state have taken part in this celebrated festival and many of those children have gone on to bring their own families to DreamBIG. How can we help young people navigate this strange new world that 2020 has delivered? By fostering our shared sense of humanity and curiosity. Humanity reveals our ability to love and have compassion. Curiosity drives our desire to ask questions about things we don’t understand. Both are intrinsic to the arts and sciences. Engendering empathy and curiosity in young people sets them on a great path! In this vein I offer you the wise words of our poster winner Phitchapha Ritnayom (Yr 6) – “Being an artist means being curious. When you’re curious you observe new ideas and see new worlds. I drew a picture about aliens who heard about DreamBIG Festival and they were curious to see what it is all about. They are inquisitive just like me and want to be part of this great event.” I say YES to that! Of Desert & Sea are a collective of award-winning dance artists who have previously performed and delivered workshops at WOMADelaide and OzAsia Festival. Participants in this premiere event will accomplish things they didn’t know they could. Children will get their bodies moving while learning from strong, young and proud First Nations artists. At its heart this work is a connection with and exploration of culture, with a focus on using dance to tell stories through movement. Get ready for some spirit and fun – a bit like dancing with your big sisters and brother in the living room. No experience required!

In different cities around the world, adaptations are already taking place to include animals and improve the quality of living in our urban ecosystems. These inspiring examples form the basis of a creative learning workshop where children work together to imagine and build their very own Wild City.
Adding to the sculptural building blocks of a city, children explore ideas and create the habitat and infrastructure to welcome wild animals as citizens in their urban landscape. The end result is a collaborative exhibition, on display in the South Australian Museum throughout DreamBIG 2021, that investigates environmental issues and inspires solutions.

A stack of wooden boxes that dance, sing, play and perform bring whimsical joy and delight in Crate Expectations – appearing from nowhere, and disappearing just as quickly. Out of step with time, these striding stacks are followed by a soundtrack from the 1930s and have lots of hidden treasures to discover. In contrast, The Hybrid Society take the form of a pair of social media influencers so obsessed with their phones that they find themselves beginning to morph into household appliances. Having entertained audiences all across Australia, these roaming robots will inhabit the Adelaide Festival Centre precinct for the duration of DreamBIG.

Ever wondered what your favourite tree in the park was thinking? What does your toaster think about your choice of cheese spread? Part laboratory, part performance and all imagination, Hidden Creature Gallery is an exciting interactive work for school-aged children. Existing between the digital and the real world, this work empowers young people to bring to life the places and objects around them and give them a voice using augmented reality technology. Children will be encouraged to make their own creatures and discover others that have been created before them.

A Piece of You is a live, intimate and interactive performance for up to three people at a time; a private concert for an individual or a child and their family. Artificial Intelligence is the fastest-growing technology sector in the world, predicted to be powering 80% of all other technology applications in the next five years. So what is AI, how might it affect how children grow up, and can this technology support us all to be more curious? In fact, a better question might be – can robots be curious? This presentation will unpack how AI and machine learning works, how it will transform our society, and how it can be used to enhance creativity and curiosity. Join Dr Catriona Wallace, one of the world’s most cited experts on Artificial Intelligence, alongside her co-presenter, Trinity the software robot. Child Nation is a collection of ten digital journeys which give children permission to reimagine their own surroundings. It’s fun, it’s subversive, and it lets children control the experience (and sometimes their adults), creating their own content and releasing their wild creative potential to be their alternative selves. Make a photo using an adult as your subject, record your voice to secretly animate a jacket, role play as a range of different people, see the world through the eyes of an animal, name rooms and hide notes to your fears.
