Money Talks A story of light and adventure.

Joanna and Hayden are putting in their two cents when it comes to kiddos saving their pennies, because money doesn’t grow on trees, but it can in a Fundsy Conscious Money Box. Fundsy is the ‘passion project’ of the pair who live on the Fleurieu Peninsula with their 3 children Harriet (Hattie), Edward (Ed) and Walter (Wally). Whilst watching their kiddos grow up in the outdoors, Joanna and Hayden decided they were eager to build a community where kids could share their ideas, achievements, stories and conversations; especially through social media. Fundsy Conscious Money Boxes divides savings into ‘spend, save, give and grow’ provoking thoughts beyond ‘right now’ and ‘instant gratification’. We spoke to Joanna and Hayden about Fundsy: Is Fundsy about simply teaching wealth to kids or is it deeper than that? It’s so much deeper than financial wealth, it encourages kids to consciously make decisions about how they spend their money. We want it to empower young people to be creative, feel confident, generous and capable with their money so they have the power to make a positive impact in their own life, at home, in the community and beyond!

Did your own upbringing have any effect on your effort to make conscious, positive financial decisions? Yes! We had little education around money and finances growing up so I guess we want our kids to think broader, be excited and think positively about money. What was the best thing you ever saved up for as a kid? Showbags from the Royal Adelaide Show! What do you see in the future for Fundsy? We see a huge community of people who have changed their thoughts around money, sharing stories and ideas and making a positive impact in their homes, communities and the world.

What was the inspiration behind Fundsy? As our eldest child came to the age where she began to understand a little bit about money, we decided we wanted finance to be a positive experience where she could learn about giving, saving and growing money. We knew the school curriculum would be limited and decided to take things into our own hands. And now we want to spread the message!

Enchanting illumination and mystical darkness will unfold as Patch Theatre’s latest creation ZOOM opens across Adelaide and regional South Australia. ZOOM is a captivating story inspired by Crockett Johnson’s much-loved children’s picture book Harold and the Purple Crayon. A child is alone in her bedroom, unable to sleep and curious to understand. When a lost star arrives in the middle of the night, adventures happen and with the assistance of the audience, the girl discovers a community of people who can help her return the star home. Using original music, lasers and projections, ZOOM is the first work by Patch’s new Artistic Director and lighting virtuoso, Geoff Cobham. Geoff explains “Each child will receive their own interactive light which will aid as a little spark that keeps them safe and helps guide them through the interactive sessions of the show. We want to show them how the dark can be a magical place where dreams are made and that light is at its most beautiful when it’s surrounded by darkness.” 27 July - 11am and 2pm 3 Aug - 11am and 2pm 10 Aug - 11am and 2pm Age suitability: 4+ years Space Theatre patchtheatre.org.au

WORD ON THE STREET Although opinion is divided on digital device use for younger children, all responsible parents agree they want their children to have the best possible start to education. And that’s because they know coding and computational thinking – basically how to speak to computers – will be crucial skills for this generation. So how can parents who are not comfortable with their preschool children using a digital device reconcile these two competing objectives? By teaching younger children coding and computational thinking skills with unplugged activities that require no devices at all! My 2019 Digital Challenge, which is being run in almost 200 South Australian schools for Years 3-6, has had a mini-makeover. It now includes an entirely unplugged ‘Learn to Speak Robot’ themed challenge, which has been designed specifically for 3-5 year olds. This new unplugged edition has been created in partnership with the Australian Computing Academy for the ‘pre-foundational learner’. The activities within this version of the Challenge teach concepts such as algorithmic and sequential thinking, and patterns and data representation through fun and simple play. How do they do this? By engaging kids in a game of robot hide and seek or choreographing a simple robot dance routine for the adults in their lives to perform! What are you waiting for? Get your boogie on and ‘do the robot’ with your pre-schooler today!

With Helen Connolly, Commissioner for Children and Young People Early Learning Challenge Unplugged Edition

Play a game of Robot Hide and Seek with Cody Buttons

What age is it for? Children aged 3-5 years. Preschools, kindergartens, childcare and early learning centres across South Australia are able to sign up to receive the free activity packs and take part in the Early Learning Challenge. Your child will also be able to try this out with you at home, or at your local public library.

Children are challenged to find Cody Buttons who is hiding in their playground or home, as an adult directs them to hidden printed robots using printed arrows. Children will decorate their own Cody Buttons (provided in pack) and they’ll use this template to collect stickers or stamps as they work through the Challenge.

What do I need? All that’s required is a computer with an internet connection to enable you to download the activity you would like to try, and a printer. If you do not have these, your local public library does, and could be a great place for you to access the Challenge to print out the Challenge materials so you can do each of the activities with your child. What are the Challenge Materials? There are two fun and completely unplugged activities to choose from. To obtain the two free activities, all you need do is register – this takes less than one minute. Children can complete either activity to complete the Challenge, but they are also welcome to try both.

Do a Robot Dance with Cody Buttons Children will be invited to create their own dance sequence using images of Cody Buttons in different dance poses. Once completed, children show the routine they have created to caregivers in the immediate vicinity (who are absolutely obliged to turn up the volume and get their groove on!). We are happy to share captured footage of adults performing Cody-moves on our social media!

If you’re a child, young person or parent and there’s something you think I should be doing to make things better for the lives of kids in SA, please get in touch! commissionerCYP@sa.gov.au

Lions and Witches For Their Wardrobe Ever dreamed of being a pirate, armed with a mighty sword, ready to conquer the seven seas? Or maybe a robot all the way from outer space! All of this is possible with the imagination of a child. ‘Mini Mad Things’ is an SA business that makes ethical, fascinating costumes and enchanting accessories to aid kiddos in their imaginative play. Eleanor, the brains behind Mini Mad Things, says that the story began with a dinosaur costume made for a playful two year old. The collection of crazy costumes then grew from there to join the whimsical realms of children all over the world (they ship internationally).

Winter Is Coming… To The Bay

Importantly, young children learn by imagining and doing. The process of pretending helps to grow skills in many essential developmental areas. Healthy relationship building stems from social interaction at a young age. Cooperative play helps foster empathy and understanding of others feelings.

Ice-Skating and Tobogganing is Returning to Winter Wonderland 2019 at Glenelg!

There are no gender rules when it comes to dress-ups. Dinosaurs and fairies are for everyone; giving children the opportunity to choose their own role-play is character building. Not only does Mini Mad Things have a smorgasbord of options from superheroes, unicorns, hats, hair-clips, wands, jewellery and everything in-between, they also have a range of craft activities, which use ethical and recyclable ingredients. Make your own junk robot, bark painting, nature crown and more! We love that Mini Mad Things gives children the opportunity to be creative and to see the magic in the world, the way young minds should.

Grab your mates and strap on some skates because Glenelg’s Winter Wonderland is coming back for three weeks from 28 June - 22 July in the all-weather, clear domed beachside marquee. You’ll see the sky and sea as you skate undercover on the large 450sqm ice rink. The kiddos will also love the 25-metre toboggan slide. This year Winter Wonderland will host an Opening Night Twilight Disco Party! Sessions will be held at 6:00pm and 7:30pm so you can skate the night away to some cool tunes! Tickets are super affordable and include skate hire! If you’re planning on making a day of it, there will also be ‘Winter Warmer’ vouchers so you can shop and dine for less along Jetty Road. Getting there is also easy, just jump on the Tram and arrive at the Moseley Square doorstep or check out free-park-and-walk, free-park-and-tram, and other nearby parking options. Additionally, there

is two hour free parking at GU Filmhouse and Partridge Street car parks. 28 June - 22 July Moesley Square, Glenelg winterwonderlandsa.com

A Phil Cummings Exhibition is Coming to the State Library! Whether your childhood was 5 minutes, 5 years or 50 years ago Phil Cummings: Stories behind the books exhibition will enchant all! Phil Cummings is an award winning South Australian author of over eighty books for children (from picture books to novels) in a career that has spanned thirty years. This FREE and INTERACTIVE exhibition (yes, emphasis on the free and interactive wahoo) was co-designed with children from Peterborough Primary School and will allow kids to explore and for adults to be kids. The characters and worlds that Phil created in his books will be brought to life in the exhibition space, including: • A country chook shed reading space to feel at home in Phil’s books. • A recreation of the younger Phil’s lounge room as he watched the history-making Moon landing in 1969.

/ 10

Interactive elements include: • Giant light-box sand table to encourage dynamic storytelling in a highly tactile medium, and to spark reflection on Indigenous stories and methods of transmitting them. • A ‘writing ideas’ table, with plenty of scrap paper and writing prompts to capture the essence of creativity and perhaps even begin your own bestseller. • Inspired by Phil’s fable Boy (about a little boy who faces a dragon and stops a war) visitors can face their own ‘dragon’ and sculpt a dinosaur, dragon, monster or even their greatest fear from clay, then display it, take it home or conquer it as they want. This activity is about finding power within to be your own hero! • Presented by the State Library of South Australia as part of the DreamBIG Children's Festival discover the wonder of childhood and inspire your own kiddos creativity, through Phil Cummings work.

Fast Five With Phil Cummings What is your earliest memory of reading? The earliest memory I have is sitting with my Nanna and she was reading poems from When We Were Very Young by A.A Milne. I remember trying to read them myself and struggling. I also remember reading my first reader when I started school. What age did you write your first novel? My first novel, Angel, was published by Random House in 1998. Up until then I had been writing picture books and junior fiction; mainly for educational publishers. What advice would you give aspiring junior authors? Writers learn to write by writing and reading; the more you do, the better you will become. It is also important to try many different things and to challenge yourself. Which author had the biggest influence on you? It wasn’t any one author, but the books that had a real impact on me when I was young were The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. What inspires you today? I search for stories everywhere, I observe the world and see if any passing moments can somehow find their way into my stories. I love finding new characters and settings and seeing where I can fit them into my writing.

O PI N I O N

Except when it comes to your uterus.

WORDS — Danielle Symes

I would have never thought to label myself a feminist, the term seems to come with such negative stereotypes of women who hate men and don’t shave their armpits but the definition of a feminist is ‘someone who advocates for womens rights on the grounds of equality between sexes’… so with that said, and the fact that I rarely shave under my arms, I guess I am, in fact, a feminist! I’m not the type to paint witty signs and march in the streets, nor am I one to start a political blog pointing out the hard truths but I am the type to lead by example for my children. In our household my husband is very hands on… he cooks, he cleans, he helps with school drop offs, gets up to the kids in the night and he works a full time job. I take out the bins, I fix the toilet, I put together the Ikea flat packs, I repair broken toys, I pick up the dog poo and I also work full time. No role is his or mine, we share the load and together we just try and survive this chaotic time in our lives as a team. Brad is a good husband and an incredible dad, so yes I know that I am lucky to have him, but this is where the ‘equality line’ can get a little blurry for me. I am lucky to have him, this is correct. He is the love of my life, he is easily the sexiest man in most rooms, he is kind, patient and he is driven and passionate about his career. However… I am not ‘lucky' that he helps me with the kids or pitches in around the house. This is not luck. For me, this is expected. Brad does not help me with cooking dinner, he just does that because he too lives in this house and it was his sperm that made their way into my uterus and created those two children he is ‘helping’ me to raise. I know there are plenty of others out there just like Brad but there are also plenty that are not, and after reading some of the information (and comments on instagram) regarding the recent law passed in Alabama, it’s scary to see just how many of them there are and what that might mean for our future as women. Brad is just as appalled by this law as I am, but I am not so much angry about it as I am scared. Handmaid’s Tale is not so far fetched… remember all the flashback scenes where everything seemed kind of normal but small things started happening to cut off women’s rights? It started with their bank accounts, then not being able to get the pill anymore, then not having control over their own WOMB! Ok, so granted Alabama skipped the whole bank account step but SERIOUSLY! These are some early warning signs if ever I’ve seen them and oppressive red is not my colour…. / 12

 Oh and just incase this all makes its way to Australia and Brad manages to escape to Canada without me, I am going to get on the front foot and say I am volunteering to be Ofhemsworth (Chris preferably, but I’m not fussy). I saw one meme that read “Vasectomies are reversible so why not make all men get them and then if they are truly ready to be a father they can undo them.” Seems extreme right? Well so does the possibility of going to jail if you suffer a miscarriage, but here we are. Brad and I recently made the decision that we no longer wanted to have anymore children, we pretty much knew we only ever wanted two, so about a month ago he booked in for the snip. It was a day surgery and he was back at work the next day. Brad did this for us, he acknowledged that my body had gone through enough after years of hormonal ups and downs from being on the pill and then giving birth to our two enormous 9 pound children who took my vagina with them on their way out.

 It’s easy to sit here and say ‘that will never happen to us’ but I bet that’s what the women in Alabama said too. But yep you guessed it… I am ‘so lucky’ to have a husband do that for me. The alternative was for me to keep pumping artificial hormones into my body which are a) expensive b) reek havoc on my body and c) a bloody inconvenience when your script runs out and you have to book in to the doctor to get another one. Or I could of course have had a hysterectomy… an extremely invasive and irreversible surgery. For Brad it was a one off surgery where he basically had his balls tickled for an hour and it can be reversed at anytime. It was a no brainer for us personally but for these men in Alabama it’s like asking them to give up one of their guns. Now obviously I don’t expect all men to go out and get vasectomies, that is a choice between a partnership, but I’d bet my fallopian tubes that none of those politicians that passed this hideous law have had that procedure done. In my own little bubble I feel safe and comforted knowing that our kids are growing up seeing equality between men and women, and for a while that has been enough for me, but I can’t be ignorant anymore. None of us can. With the recent election here in Australia it is clear that our government has a lot of work to do, and they need to get with the times before our planet self combusts, but for now at least our bodies are safe. @danielle_symes daniellesymes.com

Hey Hayley!

Q A & with @sweetlittlestory

I’m Hayley Berlingeri, Adelaide born and bred, mamma of three, and here I am just finding my way (AKA fumbling!!) through my days with my little ones, trying to be the best version of me that I possibly can be (which more often than not, results in me flopped out on the sofa at 10:34pm eating an entire packet of Mint Slice bickies, and thanking God that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it!) Before the babes came in to being, I poured my heart into my career as a Junior Primary teacher and JP Coordinating Principal, I travelled the world, near and far, and I solidly slept. But since then have given every waking minute to motherhood and all its mess, mayhem and marvel. Oh, and I love to share our stories in squares on our Insta page @sweetlittlestory

What’s the most valuable or important lesson your kids have taught you?

It’s funny, I thought I’d be the one doing the teaching, but they have taught me so much. I learn from them on the daily. And it’s often things I never even knew I needed to know! They’ve taught me what it means to love, and to be loved, without expectation. They’ve taught me true patience (Ratbag Romeo, especially! Haha!) They’ve taught me what it feels like to be tired beyond belief but to want to push through that haze to be the best mother / wife / daughter / sister / friend I can be. But I think the most important thing is that they’ve taught me who I really am. They’ve shown me my purpose. They’ve enabled me to know what it means to have a ‘mother’s heart’. And, without sounding too clichè, I believe they’ve helped me find my true self. If it wasn’t for them, and becoming a mother, I wouldn’t have had my eyes opened to this new life, and my mindset transformed to see all the wonder and beauty in it.

How do you know when you’re ready to start having children?

Oh, God, is anyone ever ready??!! I know I wasn’t! In fact, my husband, Paolo was the one who forced me into it! He had lured me into the ‘lets make a baby’ chat a few times, and I’d always agreed, but then quickly reneged! I think because I loved my life so much, and I didn’t want any slippery little suckers coming along and upsetting the apple cart! But, as Paolo pointed out to me, I was getting a bit long in the tooth (nearly gouged his eyes out at that point! And don’t you just HATE that as gals, time is against us when it comes to having children?! That damn body clock of ours!!) and that maybe we’d better start trying for a baby soon, just in case we came across a few hurdles. Which, thankfully and gratefully, we didn’t. But nothing, literally NOTHING (!!!) can prepare you for that first baby and all that comes with it. No matter how many details your own mum tells you. No matter how many friends describe it. No matter how many books you’ve read, or babies you’ve held, NOTHING can REALLY prepare you. The complete and utter life change. The long and lonely nights. The unbelievable tiredness that follows you around in a foggy haze for months on end. The worry / stress / anxiety over every teensy detail (OMG she only fed on my boob for 14 minutes instead of 15! Will she survive????!!! ...yes, I was that crazy!!). And the love. Oh, the love!!! A love like you’ve never known before. So pure. So true. So strong that you feel your heart might just pop at any moment. Nothing on earth can prepare you for that love. Got a question about life, motherhood or eating chocolate biscuits… I'll give you an answer! @sweetlittlestory / 13

FAMILY FRIENDLY LUXURY By Hayley Berlingeri @sweetlittlestory VOLKSWAGEN TOUAREG LAUNCH EDITION My intergalactic spaceship (AKA car!!!) for the day! This luxury SUV is so high tech and fast flying that you really do feel like you’re at the helm of an out-of-this-world, time travelling space machine! Yet, its features are so easy to use that even the most technologically inept person (that’s me!!!) can navigate it. The new Volkswagen Touareg Launch Edition had us all comfy and cosy as we flew up the freeway (ok, ok, not actually flying - I stuck to the speed limit of course!!! But it definitely felt like we were flying!) to the Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens to make the most of the beautiful Autumn weather. Those twists and turns, and hilly roads are no match for this beast with its 8 speed automatic gears and 4 motion all wheel drive, and even though it’s a bigger SUV, it handles like a zippy small car. There’s a heap of boot space (my double pram plus a giant picnic basket fits easily with room to spare) and my babes in the back had plenty of room too, without their car seats having to be squeezed in.

I LOVED the ginormous electric glass panoramic roof and so did the kids. They were delighted when those pretty Autumn leaves were falling. The Touareg has all the swanky features you’d expect from a luxury SUV, plus so many more like the buttery soft leather seats with heating AND cooling, handy compartments for EVERYTHING, tinted rear windows, navigation system, keyless access and start, auto headlights and rain sensing wipers, plus 4 zone climate control air conditioning. Not to mention all the high tech safety features (which suddenly become SO important when you’re transporting your most precious cargo) like Driver Fatigue Detection System, front and rear parking sensors, rear view camera, Park Assist, Traffic Jam Assist, Emergency Assist, Side Assist, Lane Assist. Seriously, this car is so clever it can almost drive itself! And then there are my two most favourite features… the HUGE display touchscreen that wraps almost around the entire dash - which solitairevolkswagen.com.au also changes colour FYI. Yes, you can choose the colour of your dash display! How fun! And, the fully customisable massage function built into the seats! That’s right, a day spa in your car!! Now, I’m not keen on driving at the best of times, but I’d happily hoon around all day, even with three squawkers in the back seat, if I could have a luxury back and leg massage for hours on end!

EXTRA FEATURES INCLUDE: • 8 speed Automatic & 4MOTION All-wheel drive

• Front Assist with City EB and Predictive Pedestrian Monitoring* • Lane Assist with Adaptive Lane Guidance* • Park Assist* • Front and Rear Cross Traffic Assist* • Proactive Occupant Protection* • Electronically-operated tailgate with Easy Open & Close • Savona leather appointed upholstery# with massage, heated and ventilated front seats • 9.2” Discover Pro navigation system with gesture control • Rear View Camera* • Keyless Access and start • Front and rear parking sensors • Auto headlights and rain sensing wipers • Driver Fatigue Detection system* • Panoramic electric glass sunroof • Innovision Package: 15” Discover Premium, 12.3” Active Info Display, windshield projected Head-Up Display and additional Ambient Interior Lighting in 30 selectable colours *Safety technologies are not a substitute for a driver’s responsibility for the vehicle. #Leather appointed seats has a combination of genuine and artificial leather, but are not wholly leather.

The new Volkswagen Touareg Launch Edition is now available. For more information and to book a test drive, please contact Solitaire Volkswagen. 30 BELAIR ROAD, HAWTHORN, SA 5062 37-41 MAIN NORTH ROAD, MEDINDIE, SA 5081

The comfort levels of the Volkswagen Touareg are incomparable, the safety and technology features are mind-blowing, and the overall driving experience is second to none. Every little aspect has been so well thought about and executed in this family friendly, luxury SUV.

More Green Time Less Screen Time

What was your first nature play memory? I spent my early childhood living in Darwin and I remember being outside pretty much all the time. My sister and I would bring our dolls outside and make cubbies for them, and play imaginative games while climbing trees. I remember listening to the deafening sound of the cicadas and collecting their skins - it was like a mini treasure hunt finding them all over the backyard.

If you’ve ever been to a Wild Imagination event you’ll know that you will find all kids of nature play activities specifically designed to let any kiddo’s mind run wild and free. Wild Imagination is a wonderful alternative to vacation care in the school holidays where little ones laugh, splash, crawl and climb through mud play, nature crafts, potion making and cubby building. All of the activities utilise ingredients from the natural world around us such as flowers, sticks, herbs, spices, leaves, wood and anything Brooke Davis can come up with. Brooke is the imagination behind it all who believes that kids need more green time and less screen time. To help this idea come alive she has recently launched a crowd funding campaign for her nature play activity book for kids ‘Your Wild Imagination’. From 3+ years old the book is for anyone big or small who wishes to be inspired. It includes over 20 nature play activities that can be transformed by your own unique creativity. We spoke to Brooke Davis about her new book and inspirations:

What inspires you? I am constantly in awe of the inquisitive disposition of children and their innate connection to nature. My two cheeky and adventurous children show me every day how to be playful (although some days I wish they would play more like superb fairy wrens and less like baboons!). I am also fortunate enough to live in the Adelaide Hills with a beautiful garden, which is where the images for the book were photographed by friend and local photographer Megan from @sweet_little_light. Have you always wanted to do a printed book? Writing a book was actually something that came to me in a dream early last year, then in November I went on a magnificent trek in Nepal and while technology-free (as well as husbandand kid-free!) for 12 days I found myself drawn to writing and planning the book. I hope this adventure leads to many more books because I have planned them all in that travel journal!

What has been the most exciting thing about the Crowd Funding journey? Seeing the reaction of those who have only just discovered Wild Imagination become so passionate about the book. I’ve loved seeing people from all over the world pledge to buy the book; it gives me hope that the next generation of leaders will have a strong connection to nature and will work to protect the environment. Playing in and with nature is the first step to developing an environmental conscience, because we won't care for something if we don't connect with it.

"I Spy with My Little Eye" is a game that has been used by parents for generations and while it can help wile away the hours on a long car trip or entertain a testy toddler in a doctor's surgery, it is also a great reminder to us as parents to think about our children's ability to see clearly.

It's a startling fact that 1 in 5 children have undetected eye problems and these can be nearly impossible to spot without an eye test. Children are remarkably resilient and without the knowledge that they should be able to see any other way, they will cope in many other ways. Maybe they hold their book a little closer (or farther away) from their face than normal, maybe they tilt their head when looking at the television or squint. They could cover one eye when watching a movie on an ipad, or complain of headaches or dry eyes. The fact is that there are so many subtle signs, that they are easy to miss. But the way not to miss them, is to get their eyes tested by a professional optometrist who can asses not only their vision but their overall eye health. At National Pharmacies Optical, they believe that all children should have the brightest outlook on life so they have now introduced FREE glasses for children 12 years and under with a family membership. That means you can book an appointment at any of their 21 optical stores and your child can have an extensive eye exam and if they do detect a problem that can be corrected with glasses - those glasses and the lenses are completely free. So next time you're asked to play eye spy as

Orthodontics

Dr Dan iel

As a parent it’s not unusual to have questions about orthodontic treatment for your kids. We thought we’d do some investigating for you and speak to the lovely team at Transform Orthodontic Care. The Transform team is led by Dr Daniel De Angelis, a South Australian accredited Specialist Orthodontist, who has been straightening teeth and correcting bites for over 20 years. As a father to two young children, Dr De Angelis understands the challenges of parenthood and is caring and sensitive to the needs of his all his patients, particularly his youngest ones. He loves to see the excitement in their eyes as their smile and confidence transforms.

HERE’S SOME ORTHODONTIC ADVICE STRAIGHT FROM THE DR’S MOUTH:

1. What age should my child see an orthodontist? As your child starts to lose their baby teeth to make way for adult teeth, you might be wondering whether their teeth are growing ‘normally’, and whether you need to take them to see a dentist or an orthodontist. Like everything when it comes to children, every child is different! Whether they need orthodontic treatment will really depend on the child, and if there is an issue that needs to be treated. My view is that seeing an orthodontist for an assessment at 7 years of age is a good idea. It means we can either rule out the need for early treatment, or if there are any problems present, we can talk you through the best course of action to put you and your child's minds at ease. Correcting a potential problem before it eventuates can often be less complex than delayed treatment. For some children, early treatment can prevent physical trauma to the protruding front teeth and reduce emotional distress. Essentially, early orthodontic treatment can also save you money down the track, by reducing the need for more expensive treatment in later life (which we all like to hear!).

As a busy working mum, Jen knows just how hard the morning juggle can be for Australian families, getting the kids out the door on time for school with

2. How do I know when to take my child to see an orthodontist? If any of following things are concerning you, your child might need an orthodontic assessment: • Early loss of baby teeth (before age five) • If your child’s teeth don’t meet properly when biting • I f your child’s front teeth are crowded (around age seven or eight) • Protruding front teeth

brushed hair, lunches made, bags packed and teeth cleaned. In fact, it was the stress of getting her daughter’s knotty hair brushed and up in a ponytail before school which gave her the idea for her innovative new gentle detangling hair brush, the HAPPY HAIR BRUSH. Available in 7 colours with a RRP of $39.95. happyhairbrush.com.au

• Biting or chewing difficulties • I f your child’s jaw shifts when he or she opens or closes the mouth • I f your child is older than five years and still sucks a thumb or finger 3. Do I need a referral from a Dentist? No, you don’t need a referral from a dentist. However, I like my patients to see their dentists regularly for a check-up and clean, maintaining general dental care is important. Our patients are rewarded with a movie voucher if they see their dentists every six months for a check-up and clean. HELPING YOUR CHILD MANAGE ANXIETY If you have an anxious child, you are not alone. Parents all over the world are dealing with anxious children. Between the tender age of four and the brink of adulthood at seventeen, one in seven kids are diagnosed with a mental illness in Australia. Of all those, more than half are diagnosed with anxiety. That’s one in fourteen, or two children in every Australian classroom experiencing anxiety. It’s prudent to suggest that the current statistics underestimate the enormity of the problem. Many anxious kids currently go undetected. The good news is that the mental health landscape is changing in Australia. There’s now a growing recognition of the enormity of the problem and also greater knowledge available to assist parents and teachers support children who are anxious, and ensure they live full, rich and happy lives.

It’s normal If your child feels anxious, reassure them that these feelings are a normal response to new people, events or potentially challenging situations. Let them know that there is a great deal they can do to manage their anxious feelings, so they can get on with the activities they enjoy.

Explain anxiety Anxious kids frequently struggle to explain how they feel. An important first step in anxiety self-management is explaining to your child how anxiety works.

Recognise anxietyinducing events There are many things that can evoke anxiety in your child, including:

• Stressful events • Life changes • Transitions • Difficult experiences • New or unfamiliar situations Help your child to recognise the specific situations and events that make them feel anxious such as meeting new friends, sitting tests and fear of rejection. In this way you can help your child manage and minimise their feelings of anxiety.

Respond with empathy When your child feels anxious, the part of the brain that controls rational thinking, decisionmaking and concentration temporarily goes offline. They can feel easily overwhelmed by simple, everyday events and situations. Rather than protecting your child by allowing them to avoid meeting these challenges, or dismissing them as trivial, validate their feelings with statements such as:

• “I can see you’re feeling worried about going to camp without your brother.”

• “Thanks for telling me you feel nervous about the test. It’s understandable.”

• “I see you’re really anxious about this right now. I know it’s hard for you.”

• Help your child to recognise the specific

situations and events that make them feel anxious such as meeting new friends, sitting tests and fear of rejection. In this way you can help your child manage and minimise their feelings of anxiety.

Resist the temptation to rescue or fix a situation. Respond with empathy and understanding to their concerns.

• Teach your child that the amygdala, the

part of the brain that protects them from danger, is always on high alert when they are anxious.

• Explain that the amygdala sees danger

where there is none, but the body prepares to fight for life or flee from danger as if it’s protecting them from a hungry lion.

• Discuss that the amygdala can’t

differentiate between a hungry lion and public speaking or some other task they must face.

• Talk about the changes that happen in

their body to power them up to fight or flee including; increased heart and breathing rates and the pumping of the blood from the stomach to the arms and legs, which can cause nausea and even vomiting for some.

Manage anxious moments Help your child develop the tools to regulate and push their anxious feelings to the background. Practice these anxiety management tools when your child is feeling calm, and it will be easier for them to practice when they are nervous. These include:

• Taking some deep breaths: Deep belly breathing from the diaphragm calms the amygdala, reducing feelings of anxiousness.

• Bringing their attention back to the

present: Use their senses to bring their attention to the present moment and away from their worries – “Tell me five things you see, four things you hear and something you smell.”

• Getting them moving: Physical exercise is not only a great distraction but it releases feel-good endorphins that help children and young people feel better and more optimistic about the future.

• Defusing their thoughts: Anxious

thoughts can get stuck, refusing to budge no matter how unwanted they are. Help your child to distance themselves from their thoughts by placing distancing statements in front of their thoughts. Replace “I’m going to fail the test” with “I had a thought that I’m going to fail the test.” Rather than changing their thinking, assist your child to distance themselves from any unhelpful thoughts.

• Get the fundamentals right: Sufficient

sleep, good nutrition and exercise are essential for anxious kids. Support your child to adhere to their optimal bedtime so they wake naturally each morning, reduce sugar, take care of their gut health through good nutrition and encourage regular exercise for optimal mental health. There is a great deal you can do to help your child manage their anxiety. Start by assisting your child to understand the fundamentals of anxiety, show your genuine understanding of their feelings and be ready to support them emotionally to push their anxiety to the background.

MILESTONES 0-5 W O R D S — Lauren Jones

As our little ones develop, they have rapid periods of growth at different ages where key skills are established. Your child’s early childhood years are critical to their growth and development and set them up with good foundation skills to support them in their friendships, learning, communication, problem solving, physical abilities and emotional wellbeing. One key area of development is communication. Here are a few critical skills that you will see: B I RT H -1 2 M O N T H S : • Understands around 10 words, responds to their name, recognises familiar people and objects • Starts babbling around 6 months, and learns a few words, copy sounds and noises (e.g. animal sounds) • Enjoys early turn taking games (peek-a-boo), smiles and squeals in response to others

2-3 Y E A RS : • Children understand more questions by now (“what” “where” “who”) • Developing knowledge of basic adjectives such as colour and size, and can identify objects that go together. • Noticing feelings in others and themselves • Sentences are up to 5 words long, and a variety of words are used (action, naming, location, describing words) • You should be hearing established sounds such as m, n, b, p, h, k, g, w, t, d, and newer ones such as s, f, ng in their words

3-4 Y E A RS : • Understands most ‘wh’ questions (what, who, where, when), can answer most questions about their day, and will share, take turns and play cooperatively • Uses joining words, asks lots of questions, uses pronouns (e.g. he/she, me/you) and negatives (e.g.‘don’t/can’t) • Some sounds are a little difficult still including s, sh, ch, j, th, z, l, r

1-2 Y E A RS :

4-5 Y E A RS :

•W ill follow simple commands (e.g. put it in the bin), understands up to 50 words, and shows interest in playing and interacting with others

• Can follow 3 part instructions (e.g. get your hat, take an apple, wait at the door), and can understand them while doing another task

• Closer to 2 years, children will point to many body parts and pictured items that are named, follow instructions with 2 parts, and use toys for their purpose (e.g. brush doll’s hair)

• Starts to recognise some letters, sounds, numbers

• Will say at least 50 words as they approach 2yrs and begin 2-word combinations

• Plays cooperatively with their peers, and uses imaginary play

• Sentences are formed well, stories are simple but have a beginning, middle and end, and most speech sounds are accurate

Embrace yourselves:

Taryn Brumfitt is paving the road to body positivity

When Adelaide mother of three, Taryn Brumfitt, posted what was a somewhat unconventional before and after photo of herself on her Facebook page, she could never have predicted it was going to reverberate across social media the world over. In the composite, Taryn showcased what she believed, at one time, had the potential to be her perfect bikini body. On stage in her pinnacle moment of glory, after intensive dieting, training and restriction, confidently competing in a body building competition she was inspired to enter as motivation to help lose the post baby kilos. This image was juxtaposed with her more voluptuous, ‘after’ shot; a happier, fuller and most importantly, more fulfilled version of herself, that she had chosen to embrace, after throwing away the scales in favour of learning to love and accept her body. Since then, Taryn has continued the body positive conversation she started that night when her image went viral globally, by undertaking an international crusade; rallying against the media, advertising, the weight loss industry and overarching societal ideologies of what a woman’s body “should” look like. What started as an individual wanting to spark a change in thinking, has gone on to become a global Body Image Movement. Having authored two books and directed and starred in the inspiring and important social change documentary Embrace, Taryn is at the forefront of empowering women and men to make peace with their bodies, and is now setting her sights on helping the most impressionable in our lives, our children, to interrupt the cycle of body hating before it begins. / 20

We chat with Taryn about her body confidence journey, learning to embrace yourself, and what’s next for The Body Image Movement. When did your journey towards body positivity begin? The moment I stepped onto the body building stage, arriving in what was my desired bikini body, I just remember thinking “I can’t do this for the rest of my life”. At the pinnacle of embracing what I thought was my perfect body, I just thought “oh gosh no, this is just too hard and takes too much time and sacrifice and energy”. I decided I was going to go out and use my body for pleasure and not punish it, and learn to find joy in food again, rather than just worrying about how many calories something has. How did you learn to embrace your own body? It’s really important to know that it won’t happen overnight, you can’t just flick a switch and love your body. But you can, in any given moment, make the choice to learn to embrace. I think the key word here is learn. You really have to educate yourself and spend time unpacking the old stories, educating yourself as to why you hate your body and then seek out information, whether in the form of documentaries, books, websites or people who are positive about their body image, and just head up that road of learning to embrace.

There’s such power in finding that confidence, self-love and selfrespect. That’s what I want for every woman and mother, to find that magic inside of themselves, because we are capable of so much more than we know

PRO FIL E

What inspired you to turn this exploration of body image into a documentary? There are two reasons. The first being the 7000+ emails and messages I received after posting my before and after body transformation image on Facebook. Emails from people all around the world talking about their body dissatisfaction, very heartbreaking stories. That was certainly the motivation, I knew I had uncovered something we weren’t talking about in 2014, like we are now in 2019. I felt a responsibility to do something with all of those stories. The second reason was through frustration with media interviews. They’re 4-minute-long TV segments, and because my photograph went so viral, they were really about being a viral sensation as opposed to respecting the subject and depth that sat behind that photograph. I just wanted the subject of body image to be taken more seriously than it was, and the only way to do that was to do it on my own terms and be independent. That’s when I came up with the idea to make the film. How has the body image movement journey transformed your life personally? The whole journey from the original photograph, to the books, to the film, has transformed my life in so many ways. I still live in and love Adelaide, so that hasn't changed. I travel a lot, to various parts of the world to spread this message. The whole journey of learning to love my body has propelled me outside my comfort zone to do things that I never thought possible. I think that truly is the difference between not loving your body and loving your body. There’s such power in finding that confidence, self-love and self-respect. That’s what I want for every woman and mother, to find that magic inside of themselves, because we are capable of so much more than we know, and we are living in a day and age where it’s time that women rise up, stand up and use their voices. It’s really hard to do that when we’re still standing around the water cooler at work talking about our cellulite or the latest diet plans.

What have you come across that has surprised you about body image / confidence issues universally? I think I was surprised that no matter where I travelled, across different walks of people and cultures, women felt the same. Women across the planet are struggling with their bodies. It might be different nuances in different countries, but there are always challenges. No matter where I went, the stories were still the same, women were hating their bodies What do you hope people following the body image movement journey will take away from it? It’s not the sole purpose of their life to be at war with their body, that’s not what we’re here to do. A few months ago, I was walking through Perth Children’s Hospital and I saw all these sick children and I was looking at them thinking “how dare anyone talk about their cellulite or their stretch marks today” when some of these kids are not even going to make it to our age. It’s such a privilege to grow old. I also want people to know that we weren’t born hating our bodies, this is a learned behaviour, so we can unlearn it as well. It doesn’t have to be this way. As equally important as that, just hoping or wishing to love your body, is not going to get you there. You have to put in some time and effort, educate yourself. But that process can be fun as well. The more I read, the more stories I immersed myself in, I found myself more and more inspired. Just looking at things from a different perspective was truly life changing. What is next for you? I’m currently financing the Embrace Kids documentary. Embrace Kids is the same heart and soul as Embrace, but for 8 - 12 year olds. Embrace the documentary has been seen in hundreds of secondary schools across Australia, but what I’m finding is that by the time kids have seen it, they’re 14 or 15 and they’ve already spent years hating their bodies, it’s really hard to undo it. So, Embrace Kids documentary is about laying the foundations of body positivity before they even know that there’s a oneway street of hating your body like everyone else has gone through.

Do you want some body positive accounts to follow on social media? Taryn recommends: @bodyposipanda @bodyimagemovement @underneath_we_are_women @jameelajamilofficial @celestebarber @turiapitt

Does having a daughter of your own magnify the importance of body positive conversations? What are your hopes for the next generation of women? Having boys and girls I feel equally invested in making sure they all embrace their bodies and are body positive, because boys are suffering a lot as well, sadly. For the next generation of women, I want hating our bodies to be an old conversation, almost like a head-scratcher. I want people to be really perplexed and confused about why the last generation hated their bodies so much. I also want for women to stop diluting their strength and their power by talking about their body in a negative way, because we don’t hear that from our global male leaders, do we? I just want to leave the conversation behind and really focus on what we’re here to do, accomplish and contribute to the world.

Would you like to learn more about how to embrace your body? You can sign up to take part in Taryn’s four-week online program, Embrace You, and start the journey towards loving the skin that you’re in. embraceyouonline.com

This is NOT a Pinterest Party! My Whiteboard of Guaranteed Party Success would contain the following checklist: WORDS— Rebecca Morse @rebeccamorse10

You know those parents who throw a Pinterest-worthy kid’s party? With arts and crafts, a grazing table, pass-the-parcel with a gift for every child wrapped in each layer, a homemade rainbow cake and a personalised party bag. I am not one of those parents. But, determined that my children not be punished for their mother’s party planning deficiencies I have, over the years, dipped my toe in the at-home party genre, with varying degrees of disaster. One year I decided I would need a big ticket item to distract guests from my hosting shortcomings, like an ice sculpture in the shape of Ana and Elsa. I settled on an inflatable waterslide for the backyard, telling invitees to pack their bathers for a “special surprise”. The Inflatable Water Slide Delivery Guy rocks up in his truck first thing on the morning of the party, shakes his head and says there’s no way he can fit the thing through our side gate.

a garden hose and a bottle of Morning Fresh. Oh, and a balloon animal guy I have in my contacts. It’s a long story. The kids loved it. And the parents had a good chuckle about what happens when Bec tries to entertain at home. So for the next party on the family calendar I played to my strengths and went off premise for a Build-a-Bear party. Which, as the name suggests, is a party during which invited guests build a bear at considerable expense.

But what could possibly go wrong in such a controlled environment I hear you ask? I even brought along cupcakes (purchased, not home-baked, of course) so we could stick a candle in one and sing to the birthday girl and the bear that she had built. I was feeling quite smug about my success until my sister mentioned on departure that she had put out a fire for me. I assumed she meant there had been some sort of quarrel over a bear footy guernsey that she had hosed down.

Cue the tears. And also from the birthday girl. So the “special surprise” for our junior party guests was a Slip and Slide dug out of the garage, / 24

But no, the sensible one in the family had extinguished an actual fire. In my handbag. Where I had dropped a match that was still burning after lighting five candles. Slow clap for me.

• Check that entertainment centrepiece of entire party will fit in backyard. • Try not to incinerate party venue. • Never, ever host a sleepover. • Supply wine to distract parents from lack of party-hosting skills.

Then there was the sleepover where the middle child declared, after being unable to sleep because her guests were “breathing too loudly”, that she was enduring THE WORST NIGHT OF HER LIFE. Not to mention the slime party that saw us scraping glittery chunks off soft furnishings for the next six months. I suspect you’re either born with the party planning gene or you’re not and not even a vintage copy of the Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book can change the course of your destiny. I am in awe of the parents who carry off a successful party at home. One party for a set of twins springs to mind. We arrived at said party the customary 20 minutes late because I’d stopped on the way to get a present. I was quick to spot a party activity schedule written on the kitchen whiteboard and when I marvelled at it the mother sheepishly said she should have wiped it off before the guests arrived. Are you kidding me? I replied enviously, this is exactly what I need to employ at my next party.

Teddy Bear’s Picnic

Under The Sea

Outer Space

It’s a retro classic that never stops being cute. Great for little ones who still drag their cuddlies everywhere, invite guests and their soft-toy friends along to a party with a rustic picnic theme. Think vintage wool blankets, old-school picnic baskets filled with delicious goodies like sausage rolls and scones and name tags for all the bears - we don’t want anyone to go missing! If you don’t have a garden, a piece of astro turf will transform your lounge room into a cosy forest in no time.

We can thank Octonauts for a resurgence in all things deep-sea-cool. Combine that with the continual popularity of mermaids, and there’s tons you can do with this theme! Twist green streamers and blue-tac them to the walls and add clumps of colourful paper pom poms around your skirting boards for a coral effect. Create a DIY ‘go fish’ game or make marine-themed bingo cards. Even a big ‘ol box of sand filled with treasure to hunt for, will keep little people entertained and excited.

Whether you go for a prettier stars and colourful galaxy palette, an astronaut adventure vibe or even a Star Wars theme, all things space is exciting. Have the kids decorate their own ‘constellation cookies’ with sprinkles and chocolate balls, make bags of popping moon-dust (with pop rocks and wiz fizz!) or create some cool galaxy art or sparkling star wands. The possibilities are as endless as a black hole!

Garden Party You can go down the afternoon-tea-in-thegarden set up or a full on gardening in the dirt route! Either way, kids love being in the backyard and it’s an ideal theme for Spring and Summer months. Create chocolate dirt and buy gummy worms for kids to make their own edible pots, or go for the real thing with plant beds or old tyres and let the party-goers get their hands dirty either planting or pulling up veggies as a game! We recommend having a pile of smocks on hand, or telling guests to wear their old clothes instead of party faves on the day.

Little Olympics Stock up on medals and trophies, this is going to be fun! Guests can come representing their favourite country and compete in loads of games! If you get stuck on ideas, look up ‘Minute To Win It’ for some quick and easy ideas, or stick to the classics like egg and spoon or a potato sack race. For some DIY, kids could make their own Olympic torch out of ice cream cones and tissue paper or even make a wreath of leaves to wear like an ancient crown. There’s lots of great printables online you can use for signage and you could even play old Olympic footage on your TV for both little kids - and grown ups - to enjoy and cheer at.

Jungle Party If your little one is an animal lover this theme will be a hit! Stick with green, white and brown balloons with some animal prints thrown in for good measure. If you can get your hands on palm fronds, they look awesome woven through a basic balloon garland. You could create mini safari packs for guests with DIY binoculars (made from toilet rolls!) for them to spot animals hidden around the house or garden. Pin-the-tail on the monkey is always an easy craft project and there is plenty of fun to be had finding animals in homemade swamp slime for brave parents who don’t mind a mess! Would you throw a ‘Fiver Party’? W O R D S — Alexis Teasdale @thefestiveco

What’s this you ask? It’s the new party gifting trend sweeping the country. And it’s really simple! Instead of buying a gift for the birthday boy or girl, ‘Fiver Parties’ ask guests to pop a $5 note in a card, so the birthday child can choose their own present or put it towards a big ticket item that the parents can help purchase. Even bigger kids may decide they want to donate their money to a charity instead of buying a present. Ideal for school-aged kids who go to a lot of parties, and plenty of parents are keen on the idea.

$

If you feel like throwing a ‘Fiver party’ is perfect for your next soiree, consider your wording on the invite. SO M ETH I N G L I K E : ‘While gifts are not expected, if you did want to bring a little something, a $5 note in a card so ‘Betty/Bill’ can put it towards the [insert epic toy] that they have been looking forward to buying, would be so appreciated.’

OR:

$

‘Betty/Bill is so lucky to have already been gifted pressies from her/ his family, if her/ his friends want to bring along a gift to the party, a $5 note in a card would be plenty! Then she/he can put it towards the [insert awesome gift] they have been saving for.’

The upsides:

 T here’s no pressure on how much to spend on a gift, especially when you don’t know the child or family well. Plus, it seriously saves parents cash across the year.  It teaches kids to be more mindful of what they receive, putting thought into what they really want to play with and the value of money.  It prevents oodles of toys coming into your home.

The downsides:

 Unless you manage expectations by explaining the concept beforehand, the birthday child may feel like some of the magic of the birthday was taken away.  Often kids love buying presents for their friends and will miss the opportunity of finding them the perfect something.  Some parents might feel uncomfortable giving cash and bring a present anyway making others feel bad for not doing so.

Chocolate Cake Method In a stand mixer (or with hand held electric beaters) whisk butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla for a further two minutes. Combine milk with balsamic vinegar and set aside, It will curdle slightly but that’s OK. Sift in cocoa and whisk very gently, it will go everywhere if you try to mix it in too fast! Next, slowly add in milk + vinegar combo. After this add the flour and hot coffee, mix until just combined.

RECI PE & PHOTOS —Annabel Bower @foodbyannabel

Ingredients Chocolate Cake

Vanilla Buttercream Icing and Chocolate Drip Topping

• 1 x 24 cm cake tin greased and lined with baking paper

• 500 grams icing sugar (it must be sifted!!)

• 125 grams very soft butter • 1 cup castor sugar

• 250 grams softened butter

• 1 tsp vanilla bean paste

• 1 tsp vanilla bean paste

• 2 eggs

• 1/4 cup milk at room

• 2/3 cup cocoa sifted (no lumps!)

temperature

• 1 cup of milk

• 200 grams white chocolate

• 2 tsp balsamic vinegar

• 75 mls thickened cream

• 1/2 cup hot coffee • 1+1/2 cups self raising flour

Remove beaters and quickly stir with a spatula, scraping the base and sides of the bowl to make sure all ingredients are mixed evenly. Pour into prepared tin and bake at 180 degrees celsius for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Sit in tin for for ten minutes before turning out onto a tea towel on a cooling rack. I always pop my cakes in the fridge, or better still, the freezer before icing. It makes them less likely to crumble and it’s easier to get smooth sides.

Vanilla Buttercream Icing and Chocolate Drip Topping Beat butter on high until very light, pale and fluffy. (This can take a while) Next, slowly beat in icing sugar and vanilla bean paste for a further 3-5 mins, start slowly then build up speed. To finish stir in milk with a spatula knocking out any of the larger air bubbles to make a smooth icing. If you are feeling really brave you can cut the cake into two layers and fill the centre with buttercream before starting with the crumb layer of icing. Put aside 1/4 of the icing for a “crumb layer”. This is a layer of icing you do under the final outer layer of icing to catch all of the crumbs and create a smooth, crumb free base.

Put the cake back in the fridge with the crumb layer to set for 5-10 minutes before adding the final layer of icing which will be thicker and fingers crossed, crumb free! Return to fridge to set before adding drip effect to the top. Melt white chocolate and cream in a microwave safe jug stirring every 30 seconds until melted. Add a few drops of food colouring and drizzle at evenly spaced intervals around the top edge of the cake so it drips over and runs down the sides of the cake. Pour the rest onto the top of the cake. Tip : Softened butter is when it still holds its form but will squash down when pressed. If it is melted too much the butter will split into oils and solids and not come back together or make a good icing.

Funfetti Birthday Wreath! By Blip Art School A birthday party is the BEST kind of party and nothing screams birthday like this funfetti masterpiece! Although the balloons tied to your front gate will deflate, this wreath will be a treasured keepsake for years to come!

Blip Art School was founded by local creatives Ella James and Astrid Myers. Their classes provide students with unique, exciting activities designed to help them develop their creativity in a fun, social environment. For more info on upcoming classes follow them on Facebook or Instagram or head to blipartschool.com

You will need: • Foam ring (available from craft stores) • Thin yarn in aqua, blue, orange, pink and white. • Thick, fluffy white yarn. • A Fork • Scissors • A wooden number or letter to represent your party person! • PVA glue • Glitter • A hot glue gun

 STEP 1 Wrap your foam ring with the thick, fluffy white yarn until it is fully covered. We used a whole ball of yarn so make sure you have plenty!

 STEP 2 Make pom poms! For a guide on making pom poms using a fork check out our Christmas DIY Kiddo article at www.blipartschool.com/ diy. For the funfetti poms, we used a grouping of 3 strands of white and 1 strand of each colour.

 STEP 3 Now it’s time to paint the wooden number or letter! Our tiniest employee at blip is having her 2nd birthday this year so we chose the number 2! Mix glitter and PVA glue together until combined. Paint three coats of the mixture onto the wooden shape, letting each coat fully dry before reapplying.

 STEP 4

 STEP 5

 STEP 6

Arrange your pom-pom’s around your wreath however you like, and carefully glue them down with a hot glue gun. Alternatively, you could use strong craft glue.

Glue a thin piece of white yarn to your glittery number or letter, flip your wreath over and glue the yarn to the top edge, this will allow your shape to hang freely in the center!

Make a hanger for your wreath by glueing a few strands of the coloured yarn around the top of the wreath and tying another piece of string around the very top.

We’d love to see your creations! Don’t forget to post them on social media, tag @blipartschool and @kiddomag and hashtag #blipxkiddo / 33

So, my kid’s about to turn two. I’m not normally one for milestones (and, let’s be honest, they have no idea what’s going on during birthday #1), but this one feels different. The little fella’s saying new words (and even tiny sentences!) everyday, and on the rare occasion he wears shoes and isn’t coated in drool, he looks like a little person, rather than the formless blob of babyhood. No real message here, just that kids are pretty cool, I guess? Anyways, here are some reviews to help you escape the throes of having kids. READ: THE TOWN – By Shaun Prescott

This one’s a mind-melter, so if you like a clear narrative and understanding every inch of your books, stay away! The Town follows our narrator as he attempts to understand and document a dreary regional New South Wales town, in-between coffees at Michel’s Patisserie and shifts at Woolies. The only thing is, the town’s slowly disappearing, with black holes and a strange shimmer beginning to consume its nondescript plazas, petrol stations and shops. The book won’t tear your emotions to any new heights, but a strange foreboding and deadpan comedy propels it along, and you’ll be left thinking about existence, your sense of place and belonging, days after you turn the final page.. Available from Dymocks, $29.99

READ: WHO SANK THE BOAT – By Pamela Allen

Since having a kid I’ve developed a newfound appreciation for authors and illustrators of children’s books. It’s a miracle to me how they can take seemingly basic concepts, sentences and imagery to captivate their audience of tiny people. Case in point – Pamela Allen’s 1980s classic, Who Sank the Boat, which follows five animal friends that decide to take Mr Peffer’s boat out for a row in the bay. It has been my son’s favourite for weeks and every night he still trembles with joy as we turn the final page to rediscover who ruins the party (spoiler: it’s the mouse). Best delivered with your finest animal noises. Available from Dymocks $14.99

WATCH: TRIPLE FRONTIER

I didn’t realise how much I’d been yearning for a good action movie! Triple Frontier follows five handsome mates and former Special Operations soldiers (led by Ben Affleck and the brilliant Oscar Isaac) who reunite for the classic “one last mission” to carry out a heist on a South American crime lord. Things, as you’d might expect, don’t go to plan. There’s barely a scene in the grey, gritty and bullet-laden film that doesn’t promise an impending explosion or fist to the face, and strong performances, conflicted characters and beautiful photography make for perfect Sunday night viewing. Did I mention there are explosions?

Fellow parentals will know that 90% of adulting is just thinking about when you can lie down again, so when it comes to meaningful contributions towards the “party” theme of this issue, I feel like I don’t have the appropriate qualifications. What I can offer you, is a selection of things I’ve enjoyed doing in the last couple of months that, at the very most, involve wearing pants. READ: The Beginner’s Guide to Running by Lisa Shearon

You’d be forgiven for thinking this was a book about running. And if it was a book about running, many of you might be giving me a subtly placed, yet emphatically delivered flipping of the bird for suggesting it. And I probably wouldn’t blame you. As it happens, The Beginner’s Guide to Running is not, indeed, about running. This is the debut novel of Perth blogger and mum, Lisa Shearon. You might consider me biased, because I like Lisa Shearon very much. The reason I like Lisa Shearon very much is because she’s just like me. Which sounds incredibly like I am stuffing my own head up my own backside, but I think you’ll find she’s also just like you. Where Lisa claims to have written a book that is “not at all highbrow, intellectual or clever”, I claim that she has written the book that every mum should read. Every mum, that is, who isn’t perfect... Every mum who has forgotten Book Week and wrapped their kid in a last-minute box of alfoil and called him the Tin Man. Every mum who thought a Bento Box was some exotic type of venereal disease. Every mum who has ever lost her sense of self, or wondered if there was more meant for her than wiping asses and cleaning dried Weetbix off bench tops day after day. Suburban mum Lucinda is living a life that appears to be a Valencia filtered picture of Instagram grid perfection. This however, couldn’t be further from the truth, and when her husband (who is a straight up dickhead) keels over and dies, she gets the opportunity to start over with her kids, and find herself again. Don’t let the journey of self-discovery motif alarm you, this is laugh out loud funny, entertaining, and heart-warming, with a couple of chapters reserved for a good gut-wrenching sob. You’ll run the gamut of your own emotions in the best possible way, which is likely as close as it gets to being a book about running! thenotoriousmum.com

WATCH: The Bold Type

The Bold Type epitomises everything I imagined my life to be when I was in my twenties that *spoiler alert* never happened. Centring around three female protagonists, besties (naturally), who work together at women’s glossy magazine, Scarlet, on New York’s Upper East Side, The Bold Type showcases female solidarity and intrinsic feminist principles, whilst also being funny, topical and on occasion, a little bit risqué. A few issues ago, I recommended Younger, and if you enjoyed that, then I guarantee you’ll love this! If you’re going to mooch off a family members Stan account for one show, let it be this. DO: Visit the Uraidla Bakery and Hotel

The wife and I had been talking about this stunning off-grid, eco-friendly tiny house, set amongst gorgeous Adelaide Hills bushland, for ages. So when my parents booked an autumn stay, we gatecrashed to scope it out. It’s a stunning place to reset the mind, with nothing but trees, walking tracks and native animals in sight. While charming wineries and cafes near Hills towns like Stirling are a stone’s throw if you feel like dipping back into civilisation for a couple hours. Turn off the phones, leave the laptop at home (there’s no TV) and arm yourself with bulk wine and platters to graze. Be warned though – you may never want to come home.

Matt Preston I am not, but I know a good beef ragu pie when I buy it for my daughter and then steal most of it for myself. Frankly, this is the kind of place I kinda don’t want to write about because I’d prefer it kept secret. Uraidla Bakery. Sure, it’s a bit of a drive and you’ll have to listen to your kids saying “are we there yet?” for a full thirty minutes on repeat and maybe someone will spew in your handbag on the way, but it.will.be.worth.it. The Bakery and neighbouring Uraidla Hotel form a quirky little dining hub with a downright charming alfresco area with hillside views (complete with oversized games, a swing set and slippery dip for the juniors). The food was delicious, the atmosphere on point, and although I can’t take my kids anywhere without them being the most disruptive humans anyone has ever had the misfortune of sharing a dining experience with, I still really enjoyed myself.

Jr Book Reviews SHERLOCK BONES AND THE NATURAL HISTORY MYSTERY By Renee Treml

STAND UP FOR THE FUTURE: A celebration of inspirational young Australians

I read Shout Out To The Girls last year, and really loved it. That book is a collection of short biographies of amazing Australian women and girls, all illustrated by different artists in their own style. Stand Up For The Future is the new book in this series, but this time it profiles young Australians from sports, the arts, charities and lots more.

When the rare blue diamond goes missing from the State Natural Museum it's up to Sherlock Bones and his trusty partner, Watts, to solve the mystery and make sure the museum doesn't get closed down. It will take wit, courage, trust and friendship to solve the case. Will Sherlock Bones and Watts be able to pull it off?

There are some famous people included, like Ben Harvey and Liam Stapleton from the Triple J Breakfast Show, and Dylan Alcott, who is an amazing, inspirational Paralympian. Then there are some less

I enjoyed reading about Grace, the troublesome racoon, because she was very bubbly and humorous, significantly adding to the story. She only had one wish: to make new

well-known, but incredible people like Drisana Levitzke-Gray, who is an Auslan advocate for the deaf community. I really loved finding out about all these people. Some of the people are young, but they are making a difference, helping their community, and inspiring others to achieve their dreams. Different illustrators gave the book a different and unique look on each page. I enjoyed reading this book all the way through, but then went back and re-read some pages, and it was nice not to have to read everything in order. This is a book I will definitely keep forever and read repeatedly. I think it would also make a great present for anyone aged 8+, as it is a beautiful hardcover and very colourful. Plus, royalties from the sale of Stand Up For The Future go to The Smith Family charity, who help disadvantaged kids thrive at school.

friends and stay at the museum, and was determined to make that wish come true. This is a great, engaging and funny read with detailed illustrations that brings the book to life. Renee Treml is well known for her other books; including Once I Heard A Little Wombat, Wombat Big and Puggle Small. If you enjoyed reading those books you will also enjoy this book! With humour, mystery and personality this is the perfect book for fans of Aaron Blabey’s series the Bad Guys and Andrew McDonald's series Real Pigeons I would rate it 3.5/5

Meet this month’s ‘Makers’ N A M E : Luci Blackborough AG E : 18 PASS I O N : Community

development But she hopes her story will inspire other young people to take risks and pursue what they’re passionate about, even if the odds seem stacked against them.

Luci Blackborough, a marketing and communications student from Magill, is currently the youngest councillor in South Australia at 18-years-old. Before winning a seat on Campbelltown Council in 2018, Luci had completed a Community Development traineeship at the City of Unley and was a member of Campbelltown’s Youth Advisory Committee. “There were only two women on the (Campbelltown) council at the time,” she says. “I thought, well / 36

something needs to change here because there is a group of young people not being represented, and on the other hand, there is a group of women not being represented as well.” While Luci was motivated to run for council, she does remember moments during her campaign when she was lacking confidence and felt unsure about what the outcome would be. “There were times when I was door knocking and the door was slammed in my face.”

“I wouldn’t be here today if I had said no to lots of opportunities – don’t feel intimidated if you’re in a room full of adults and you think ‘oh I’m only a young person what can I bring to the table?’ That’s the beauty of it, you are a young person and that’s part of what you can bring to the table.”

Get Around It is a platform showcasing 14 to 22 year old thinkers, makers and doers living in South Australia. Because young people exist in a world where being online and offline are interchangeable we’ve created a showcase which is both. Get Around It is on Instagram (@getaroundit_sa) and is also a travelling clothesline that currently sits in the foyer of the Commissioner’s office on Morphett Street. The Get Around It clothesline was on the move during SA Youth Week 2019, with young people stopping to have their photo taken next to the Malls Balls, Art Gallery of South Australia and Light Square. If you know a young South Australian thinker, maker or doer who you think deserves to be showcased both online and on the line, get in touch via the @getaroundit_sa Insta so we can interview them, take a photo and display their awesome talent for all to see. @getaroundit_sa
