It’s not every day that you can make a difference, but when you can... you should! I met Steph awhile back and like most charity founders, her generosity, empathy and energy blew my mind. We sat in a café and talked about the women that she has helped through her job as a midwife, women that arrive to give birth alone and with nothing. No nappies, no maternity pads, no baby clothes, no support... nothing. Now, we all know that this goes on... but what do we actually do about it? Well Steph started a charity – THE VILLAGE CO and thank goodness she did. Together, we have created the campaign WE ARE THE VILLAGE, because we are the village for these women. So what can we do? Buy a t-shirt, donate money, volunteer time, raise awareness. Do what you can so that we can support the women that are unsupported with the basics... and show a little LOVE! A special thank you to our friends who have all jumped at the opportunity to support this campaign so please make sure you show them some LOVE on social media.

The MOTHER of all inventions!

BaoBag: A gift of love for new parents

Making motherhood more practical with Bebe Luxe

They say necessity is the mother of invention, and in the case of Bebe Luxe, this was quite literally the case. Bebe Luxe founder and mum of four beautiful children, Katie Bode, experienced firsthand the many challenges of becoming a parent, along with the slow and inevitable discovery of what works and, perhaps more importantly, what doesn’t. Like so many mums before her, Katie found herself struggling to properly cover capsules and prams adequately, keeping baby safe from germs and out of the elements. Not to mention the not insignificant task of being able to breastfeed discreetly in public. After years of personal experience, followed by extensive planning and design, in lieu of finding an existing solution, Katie created her own; in the form of the Bebe Luxe Multi-Use cover.

The Deluxe BaoBag is a beautiful gift of love for mums and dads across Australia. These goodie bundles are full to the brim with a carefully curated assortment of products from high quality brands, ideal for families with babies. Products that the team at Baobag love, and hope you will too.  For Coverage As a capsule or pram cover, the Bebe Luxe Cover also protects your baby from the elements, keeps them snug and secure and provides them with a physical barrier from unwanted touching and germs.

You may remember receiving a BaoBag when you had your baby, with almost a million Baobag sample bags having been distributed to brand new parents across Australia since 2008. If you recall the giddy excitement of receiving a premium collection of iddy biddy best-in-brand products for you to sample with your new bub, now is your opportunity to gift a BaoBag to an expecting or new parent in your life. The Deluxe Baobag bag is a super-sized version of the sample bag so many new parents have received, and made with just as much love and thought! The contents change regularly, but are always an assortment of full size and travel sized products from well known, high quality brands with a combined retail value of over $100. It is a mystery bag of sorts, and the perfect way to either treat yourself and your precious bub to some new delights, or to buy a present for a new parent.

Bebe Luxe made by Katie Bode

 For Feeding When breastfeeding, the Bebe Luxe Cover provides mum with 360° privacy, protects your baby from the elements and helps minimise distraction.

 For Style Katie designed the Bebe Luxe Cover not only with the aim of making motherhood more practical but also to complement the everyday outfits of the modern mum. Choosing fabric that strayed from traditional baby colours and prints, the Bebe Luxe Cover patterns are handcrafted, unique and individual and made out of premium quality, ethically sourced bamboo fabric, safe for babies. bebeluxe.com.au @bebeluxe.aus Prices start from $34.95

Welcome to North Pole Post Personalised letters for your child from THE Santa Claus It’s the most wonderful time of the year… We love Christmas here at KIDDO, and we’ve been in touch with Tinsel the Elf, Chief Elf and magicmaker at the North Pole Post, who’s main role is to sort all the letters to Santa from children around the world. That’s no small feat! Tinsel the Elf wanted to share a bit about what happens up there in the North Pole and how your kiddo can receive a personalised letter from Santa himself this Christmas, through the magic of the North Pole Post. Tinsel has given us a rundown of how it all works, since Santa is pretty busy right now in the lead up to Christmas, what with all that letter writing, list checking and toy making! The North Pole Post elves work with the big guy himself to write a personalised letter typed at Santa’s desk (on official letterhead of course!). As you can imagine, Santa is an old fashioned kinda guy, so every letter is typed on his vintage typewriter, printed on heavyweight parchment paper, and individually packed by a Post Elf, whose name is included on the letter. Writing letters is hungry work, so the number of biscuits Santa’s eaten while writing the letter is also included. Of course, each letter includes special details specific to your kiddo, with Santa mentioning how proud he is of your child’s achievement that year; whether that be learning the guitar or shooting 3 hoops in the grand final basketball game - after all, Santa knows when you’ve been bad or good, so be good for goodness sake! The finished letter is then passed onto a Post Elf to fold, pack, stamp and seal, and with a little bit of Christmas magic, Post Elves deliver letters to homes all around the globe!

Santa Claus is coming to town! The Christmas Pageant is a GO! Deck the halls and sound the bells, we have some welcome good news just in time for the festive season: Santa Claus has been issued with his travel permit and will make his Christmas debut at a new-look National Pharmacies Christmas Pageant.

For over 80 years hundreds of thousands of South Aussies have flooded the city streets for the Christmas Pageant to warmly welcome Santa to town, but this year it will look a little different.

But whether you get your hands on a ticket or tune in from home, all South Aussies are invited to be part of the magic.

In a historical first, one of our most treasured events will be held as a twilight parade at Adelaide Oval, for a socially distanced crowd. The seated event will host up to 25,000, with tens of thousands expected to watch from the comfort of their own couches, with Channel nine also broadcasting the event on TV and online. All your favourite floats and characters, bands and dancers will be there, and for those watching from home, a range of online activities and festivities across social media will be available. Those who are keen to watch the event live from Adelaide Oval will be asked to enter a ballot to go in the draw to grab a free ticket, which will open in the coming weeks.

Bowerbird has felt like a really good fit for me from the start, I’m very passionate about supporting small business and, in particular, creative endeavours. Bowerbird is more than an event, it’s a showcase of the Australian design community, which is an honour to be representing. Everyone has made me feel very welcome for which I am so grateful.

Wonderful new designers; al.ive body, the new body care range recently launched by Alisa and Lysandra (twins from the Block), Appleye Jewellery Designs, simple and stylish jewellery and Dean Toepfer who’ll be bringing his very cool new product Vase Versa. Think rockets, a huge marble run, cubby houses, dress-up costumes, an urban city, cars and lots more  Lots of other fun creative ideas and a special bonus project Inspiration for making a creative space at home for your little ones  A list of basic craft supplies to build your craft cupboard  Ideas for recycling and sustainable crafting tips  Simple building technique ideas for creating with cardboard After Mini Mad Things’ successful Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign, the book is officially on its way to print and available for pre-order for $39.00.. “It’s not about making something pretty or perfect (the best things usually aren’t), it’s about using the materials you have available to explore your imagination, problem solving and embarking on your creative journey,” said Eleanor.

“So, THIS IS NOT an instruction manual. Whilst we will provide you with some handy tips and ideas about how to make the projects, there are no stepby-step instructions.” Within the book you’ll find fun projects and bright images that are designed as a starting point... to inspire and ignite little imaginations and big ideas! Each of the project ideas presented within the book is not only fun to craft, but also create something that kids can play with once the craft is over!

Unlike most craft books on the market, there are no rules and no instructions; you can let your little ones run wild with the freedom to create their own backyard fun, straight from their own imagination.

Whilst we live in a world with finite resources, Mini Mad Things wants to encourage our future leaders, doctors and teachers how to use simple, recycled materials, like the humble cardboard box, to create play.

Hey Hayley!

Q A &

WE ARE THE VILLAGE!

Adults $35 + Child's $30

with @sweetlittlestory

I’m Hayley Berlingeri, Adelaide born and bred, mamma of three, and here I am just finding my way (AKA fumbling!!) through my days with my little ones, trying to be the best version of me that I possibly can be (which more often than not, results in me flopped out on the sofa at 10:34pm eating an entire packet of Mint Slice bickies, and thanking God that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it!) Before the babes came in to being, I poured my heart into my career as a Junior Primary teacher and JP Coordinating Principal, I travelled the world, near and far, and I solidly slept. But since then have given every waking minute to motherhood and all its mess, mayhem and marvel. Oh, and I love to share our stories in squares on our Insta page @sweetlittlestory

Have you ever felt like you lost yourself in motherhood? —MEL, CLARENCE GARDENS

“No one ever mentioned it. In nine whole months, not one person said ‘you’re about to meet someone entirely new. And it’s not your baby, it’s going to be you.” @fourthtrimestercollective

Insert ugly crying face here!! I’m not sure that I’ve ever felt like I lost myself in motherhood, but more like I found myself. I found parts of myself that I never knew existed. And I met new versions of me that were never there before. In those very first days, I felt so strong for what I had just done- I had squeezed a fully formed human out of my body! I never knew I had this super-human strength within me. But, on the flip side, before too long, I felt so, so weak for all that I didn’t know. And these newly found feelings of weakness made me scared. And for the first time in my life, I felt anxious. I had never met Anxious Hayley before. I didn’t know who she was. At all. And I didn’t like her. At all. She was nervy. She was shaky on the inside. She was second guessing EVERYTHING. She would wake up in the morning, consumed by anxiety. And she would go to sleep at night under a blanket of dread. I remember thinking ‘WHO AM I????!!??! THIS IS NOT ME!!!! I was almost scared of myself, and the way I was feeling. One minute I felt empowered by the fact that I was actually managing to keep this little person alive, day after day. But then that was hugely overshadowed by feelings of sheer and utter exhaustion, self doubt, and a grieving for my old life. And this new up-and-down version of myself has me confused and wondering ‘WHERE THE HELL AM I??!!!’ Where is Confident, Even Keel, Self Assured Hayley???!!!!! But with time comes learning. And with learning comes knowledge. And, as they say, knowledge is power. Ever so slowly, the power of motherhood grew stronger inside me, as I began to trust myself. I realised that my anxiety was actually quite normal, considering that I had just been thrown into a completely new job that I had no absolutely training for. And I wasn’t so scared of it any more. Until one day, I woke up and the anxiety was gone. And there I was. Confident, Even Keel, Self Assured Hayley was back. With a few new added features ...like saggy-wet-sock boobs, and a squishy, flabby stomach. And a love for myself, for my baby, for the world, that I had never known before. And I knew that I had become exactly who I was always meant to be.

FAQ's Why Orthodontics is more than just aesthetics When people think of orthodontics, mostly what comes to mind is braces, and is an "orthodontist a dentist"? And the answer is no! A Specialist Orthodontist completes an extra 3 years of training on top of a dental degree to become an expert in this field. Orthodontics is about more than braces and straightening teeth and definitely more than just what your teeth look like. When you see a Specialist Orthodontist you might hear the term - malocclusion which refers to your bite. A malocclusion is when your teeth don’t meet correctly when you bite together. You might hear the terms overbite, crossbite, underbite, open bite and deep bite, just to name a few, to describe the kind of bite you might have. Having a malocclusion can have negative impacts on your oral health and wellbeing including excessive tooth wear, jaw joint pain, gum recession and even headaches.

What are the symptoms of having a malocclusion? Some symptoms can include:  Abnormal alignment of teeth  Abnormal wear of your teeth

According to the Australian Society of Orthodontists, a severely misaligned jaw can lead to stress and pain in the teeth and jaw leading to headaches, particularly if it’s caused by grinding of the teeth.

Why is aligning my jaw important?

 Alteration of facial structure  Frequent biting of the inner cheeks or

tongue  Difficulty chewing or biting  Speech difficulties, including the

development of a lisp  Breathing through your mouth, rather

than your nose.

Can malocclusions cause headaches?

An uneven bite can put enough pressure on the joint that acts as the hinge for your jaw leading to chronic headaches, which is why properly aligning the jaw and straightening the teeth need to go hand in hand.

consultation then take a number of X-rays so they can see exactly what’s going on. The X-rays are really important diagnostic tools that help work out how and where the teeth need to move in order to straighten the teeth and if needed, to correct the bite and align the jaw correctly. If you have any concerns, seeing a Specialist Orthodontist is a good idea. They can recommend treatment to correct the position of your teeth and avoid potential pain, discomfort, and oral complications.

How will I know if I have a malocclusion? When you see a Specialist Orthodontist like Dr De Angelis they’re not just looking at your teeth. They do a facial examination at the initial

Choosing the right childcare centre for your child… as easy as A,B,C. WO R DS

My name is Chelsea and I am the mumma of beautiful Arabella who is 9 months old. We also have baby #2 due to join Ch els our family in December this ea O li v e r year. Aside from being a mum, I have a Master of Teaching in Early Childhood Education and have been working in the sector for over 10 years. I am a Director of an Early Learning Service and enjoy getting to know many families and children with different needs, requirements and questions. I love supporting families through the difficult process of leaving their children in our capable hands and I also enjoy supporting educators in training and development to ensure they are up to date and remain motivated for your children.

How do you pick the right childcare centre for your child? It truly can be one of the toughest decisions you have to make because let’s be honest, leaving your children with qualified strangers is a bizarre concept. We just have to trust that we get that ‘feeling’ when we walk through the doors. But what makes a centre ‘feel’ right? As a Director of an Early Learning Service I see families make decisions on care facilities for their children based on different needs and requirements. As a result, I always suggest looking out for the following things. /// Director How does the director present themselves? They are essentially the face of the service so if they are knowledgeable and well presented, it is always a good sign for what is behind the closed doors. /// Staff engagement What are the educators doing with the children when you walk through the rooms? Are they at the child’s level or standing around? How did the staff welcome you when you walked through the rooms? Were you ignored, or did they smile or wave? /// Children’s engagement Do the children look happy? Are they engaged with activities and experiences?

/// Cleanliness Does the centre have a general homely feel? Does it look clean but not too sterile? Does it look like the children have been having fun within the environment? /// Location Does the location suit the needs of your family and time management? I personally don’t think location should be the main point of decision making, but for some families this simply makes life easier and lets be honest, with young children we certainly don’t want to add any additional pressure to our lives. If the centre ticks all of the above and the location is ‘somewhat’ convenient then I think you have found the right centre for your children. Please remember that every child and every family is different and our priorities are different so take what you can from the above list and make it work for you. If it is important for your child to be around a lot of nature then look out for a nice big yard, if it is important for the centre to be spotless and clean then look for that and ask questions such as how often they have a professional cleaner. I always suggest that prior to going for a centre tour, make yourself a list of what is important to you and for your child. With that list create yourself some questions and don’t be afraid to ask them. No question is a silly question. /// Fees, Charges & Government Support It is important for you to contact services directly to ask them their fees and charges, as every centre is individual. However, one thing you can do to prepare for starting childcare is get in contact with Centrelink to start the process of applying for Government support. Centrelink does support families with payments towards childcare based on eligibility so prior to booking in tours, it can be helpful to apply for this so you can get a better understanding of costing and budgeting. Even though I have been working in the sector for over 10 years, I still found this whole process daunting and difficult. I wanted the ‘perfect’ centre for our daughter so don’t be too hard on yourself. It is a tough decision for all parents, but ultimately you just need to trust your judgement.

SOME USEFUL QUESTIONS YOU MAY CONSIDER FOR YOUR TOUR • What foods are provided to the children and how nutritious is the menu? • Does the service practice primary caregiving? • What teaching philosophy does the service offer? Eg. Montessori, Reggio, Steiner. • Does the centre have professional cleaners or are the staff expected to clean at the end of the day? • How much outside time do the children have? • How many children are in each room? • What community engagement does the centre have? • How do the educators engage with the parents around their child’s learning? Eg. Is there an App or does the child have a portfolio? • Fees and Charges? • What rating has the centre received from Assessment & Rating?

O PI N I O N

Life 2.0 … the best is yet to come! countdown from the floor manager, followed by the news theme, and then it was my responsibility, and privilege, to communicate the news of the day.

My husband and the girls are texting me chores, shopping lists and optimistic requests for dinner, given I’m a mediocre cook at best.

After a series of fill-in stints at the ABC I was offered the role of newsreader at Network 10. It was a position I held, and loved (most of the time) for more than 14 years. My second and third children were born during that period and I headed back to work within six months of their births.

I’m wondering how early is too early for wine? If I have a drink at 5pm I can’t help but think of that as news time, and it still seems wrong to be winding down at a time I would previously have been gearing up for the busiest 90 minutes of my day.

I was given many opportunities and experiences I will always be grateful for. And when I took a job in breakfast radio and found that the juggle was about to break me, my TV bosses let me scale back my hours. I had a small window between finishing my radio shift and starting my TV shift and I would often grab a quiet coffee by myself. It was on one such morning that my phone rang with the news, with no prior warning that, due to budget cuts, I had been made redundant, along with many of my colleagues throughout the network. I know this is an experience that thousands have shared, especially during Covid times. I don’t consider myself special. In fact I consider myself lucky, in that I was comforted and given strength by many strangers, a luxury I realise most don’t have when they lose their job. WORDS  — Rebecca Morse @rebeccamorse107

The first time I read a television news bulletin was with the ABC. I was so nervous I nearly hyperventilated in the toilets beforehand and wondered if I could just lock myself in there and give it a miss. My now 17 year old was a toddler at the time and she pressed her little chubby-cheeked face up to the TV and gave me a kiss. The novelty of Mummy being on telly wore off very quickly for her. In the end she was only interested so she could be my plus-one to any events that she deemed cool enough to attend. After that first bulletin was under my belt I was

hooked. I loved seeing the studio lights go on, the / 12

My daughters surprised me by rushing onto the news desk after I choked out my final “Good Night”. My boss said she wanted me to have a reminder of what I would now have more time for, in my life post-10. I’m a few weeks into that new life now.

For the first time in more than a decade we don’t need any help with the kids. My Mum would come over once a week, cook us all a meal, tidy the house and fold the washing. I said I didn’t need her anymore and now I want her back! School holidays in particular were always like a Tetris puzzle, trying to allocate annual leave, favours and play dates to make sure all the days were covered. Now I’m putting my hand up to help other Mums and I’m not sure they’re convinced I have the relevant qualifications to be responsible for their child. I’ve already snapped at my teenage daughter during an argument that it was easier to be at work. Trust me, trying to navigate the school pickup zone, hangry children and meal preparation is just as challenging as pronouncing foreign leaders’ names correctly. I do miss my TV job. I miss the people and the buzz. And the free blow-drys. But I need to see the silver linings. I still have my wonderful job in radio, and I was very busy and very tired. The decision to slow down has been taken out of my hands. Now all I need to nail my newevening role is some simple recipes, a lot more parental patience and that 5pm wine.

In this edition we take an in depth look at Art & Interior Design – and how these 2 elements can work together in creating the optimal environment to nurture young creative minds. ch

I’ve been designing, styling and retailing for 30 years, with a career stretching from Urban & Regional Planning to Interior Design. Designing for communities and families, I’ve had a wealth of experience in creating family environments with personality, style and functionality. As a mum to 3, I know from experience what works! Returning to Adelaide after 20 years in Melbourne, I founded Asser & Co, an Interiors studio catering for both retail and trade. We work with personal shoppers and industry experts in sourcing the right pieces for growing families. I’ll be showing you some great pieces from our range which are stylish and sustainable. @asser.and.co 147 Magill Rd, Stepney

Kids love art, craft and colour. Artistic activities help kids learn about the world and promote visual, motor and social development. Art can be also be an incredible communication tool for kids, helping us to understand them during difficult times. A pretty handy tactic if your family has been experiencing a rough Covid related year. Research has shown that a well thought out interior can increase personal efficiency, improve mood, and develop talents. All the elements used in interior design – shapes, lines, colours, sounds, textures, images and symbols – have a psychological effect on kids’ personalities and mood. With some planning, you can even affect visual, auditory, perceptible and olfactory sensations which all strengthen cognitive development.  Keep interiors simple Rule No.1 is to keep things clean and simple. Kids need a home environment with just the right amount of stimuli to kick off healthy and creative thinking. In a world of sensory overload (thanks to internet, TV, digital games and the many forms of advertising), it’s important to keep their spaces a sanctuary for cultivating a love for art and creativity.

R otate feature art works Artworks can be found in many mediums – photography, prints, posters, colourful paintings and even framed tea towels. We all have evolving tastes in art, and for kids it’s even more so as they move through their stellar quick stages of development. Allow kids to have increasing levels of involvement on choices as they mature. C reation station Don’t waste all those daydreaming hours – get it all down on paper…. Literally! Have an area where kids can lay out their art supplies and a roll of butcher’s paper in an accessible and organised manner. Make sure that a desk or a drawing corner is illuminated properly. LOVE ART TEA TOWEL by artist Rachel Castle, castleandthings.com.au, from $89

 How to use art Go to town on an art piece – just keep it to one amazing feature! A piece of art should be a focal point and add interest without overwhelming a space. Make sure the artwork is hung with plenty of natural light and at little people’s eye level so that kids can interact with them. Art is more than just 2D pictures. Think about the many 3D forms sculpture, a hanging mobile, throw cushion, beanbag or even a lampshade! These smaller pieces shouldn’t compete for attention, but add to the sensory experience.

TIPS P rioritise light colours and natural light. F ocus on furniture with a small footprint to create empty spaces for “relief”. U se sleek multi purpose furniture to keep things flexible.  Avoid clutter - use imaginative storage containers and shelving. Designers use light colours for kids’ rooms that can create happy and calm environments. This is because kids need to be given the chance to relax, grow, play and entertain themselves.

 Use clever art storage options Look for clever storage solutions which bring order and structure. These can be a beautiful design element in themselves – patterns of floating shelves, or cute shaped baskets and containers for items such as pencils, crayons and stencils.

K eep a personal gallery Kids’ own works can also be incorporated, with a rotation hung on wire, in frames or on a contained pinboard. Al + Em have cute felt covered boards in lots of different colours. Rachellerachelle have natural and black timber picture hangers which are also pretty cool. Don’t forget a dedicated shelf for “sculptures” and 3D creations.

WORD ON THE STREET Believe your kids when they tell you all is not right with their world With Helen Connolly, Commissioner for Children and Young People Being believed is crucial to kids. It makes them feel respected and valued. Imagine not being believed? Sadly many kids have this experience regularly when interacting with some adults in their lives, at home, at school, or in the community, when accessing government or community services. If you want your kids to learn the value of trust then demonstrate how this is done. Create opportunities to spend time actively listening to your child, so that you foster moments where real mutual trust and respect can be forged.

"As adults we need to reinforce in kids that what they think really does matter, that their opinions are valid and worth sharing, and that what they tell us is of concern to them will be taken seriously. They need to know that the adults in their lives are genuinely concerned about their wellbeing, and that what’s worrying them will be prioritised." Don’t make the mistake of assuming that the things that bothered us when we were kids are the same things that bother children and young people today. They’re growing up in an entirely different world to the one in which we were raised, so their interests and concerns are completely different.

"The adults that children and young people have told me they like most, are those who are happy, helpful and accommodating, who have a friendly smile, a warm and welcoming manner, and who show empathy, honesty and respect."

What kids recommend adults do to become child friendly and child safe:  Listen to us with interest and an open mind.  Employ friendly staff who like us and are relatable and approachable.  Get to know us, understand our lives, and do the right thing by us.  Provide us with an environment that is comfortable, welcoming and well signed.  Let us know what to do and who to talk to if we feel unsafe or uncomfortable.  Admit your mistake if you do something wrong.  Find ways for us to be informed, involved and to have a say in what is happening.  Make it easy to for us to provide feedback or to make a complaint.  Show us respect by updating us on what is going on with our feedback.  Share with us how our feedback has been used to improve services.

Take the time to get to know your children individually. Listen to them with interest and an open mind, and take their ideas and suggestions seriously. Include them in your decision-making. Make an effort to understand their lives and their different points of view. Don’t just make assumptions about their situations, or assume you know best. By building the kind of relationship that reinforces interest in your child or young person’s point of view and by practising active listening, you will lay down the foundations for a relationship full of mutual respect and cooperation. We are the Village x KIDDO Buy a “We are the Village” t-shirt and help build a village of support for struggling mums. KIDDO are so proud to announce our collaboration with The Village Co, with the “We are the Village campaign”. We sat down with Steph from The Village Co to come up with this idea because we were passionate about creating a campaign that would deliver direct and impactful results, raising both awareness and funds in support of vulnerable women and their babies in our community. With this shared vision to create a campaign that would demonstrate compassion and kindness to struggling mums in desperate need of support, we reached out to our KIDDO community. We wanted to bring together women and families to do what we best; support, care, empathise and empower, by uniting with a common goal to make a difference. Getting together some influential friends of KIDDO meant that we could showcase our support for women, and the “We are the Village” campaign t-shirt, the proceeds of which will go directly to The Village Co, to help ease the burden on vulnerable women in our community who are having babies and doing it tough. / 16

Adults T-Shirts $35 Children's T-Shirts $30

I received one of your wonderful bags as I am expecting in the next month. I’m struggling so much, as I also have a 2 year old son who is profoundly deaf in both ears, so for me, going out and trying to prepare for my little girl’s birth is extremely hard. Your bag of goodies made me feel good and cheered me up. I wanted to say a big thank you for your kindness and support.

IT TAKES A VILLAGE

Spreading the LOVE with a little help from our friends.

We also want to invite YOU to be a part of supporting the “We are the Village” Campaign. If you cast your mind back to having your own baby, you’ll probably be able to look back on this experience as a special time with your family and friends; with support, love and care from those around you and an abundance of supplies to help keep your baby warm, fed and safe.

“We are the Village” campaign coming together to make a difference.

The sad reality is that not all women have this kind of network to rely on. In fact, many women in our state go to give birth without any possessions to their names, let alone a support network when they get home with their precious baby.

@rebeccamorse107 @smallgirlbigblog

The Village Co x KIDDO “We are the Village” campaign aims to raise awareness for these women, and, in turn, vital funds needed to help provide them with fundamental supplies, essential in the early days of parenthood, that may not be accessible to struggling families.

I received one of your bags when I was in hospital last week after having my baby and honestly it means so much to me. I’m having a tough time right now and this amazing gift gave me strength that I needed and to know that I’m not alone. I can’t thank you enough. Just know that you are helping a lot more than you know.

The Happiness tonic we need in 2020 WORDS — Alexis Teasdale I MAG ES — GraceMcBride

Turia Pitt inspired the nation with her story of survival and extraordinary resilience after she was caught in an out of control grass fire while competing in an ultra marathon in 2011. She suffered burns to 65% of her body, and then went on to, as her website says, ’defy every expectation placed on her.’ Turia shows life who is boss. She’s a best-selling author, athlete and mindset coach. A two-time Ironman and has raised over a million dollars in donations in her role as an ambassador for Interplast. She has motivated us with her business savvy and entrepreneurship, moved us with her public speaking and made us LOL with her hilarious wit. She’s also had two beautiful babies with her husband Michael and she keeps her motherhood journey real on social media, regaling followers with the ups, downs and in betweens of being a modern parent. Turia’s new book Happy (And Other Ridiculous Aspirations) is out now and the pick-me-up we all need right now. Not only does she sprinkle her own happiness secrets throughout the book, but Turia interviews other incredible experts and specialists who impart their wisdom too. And the best part is, it’s all practical! Easy to implement, baby-step-style bites of knowledge that will leave you feeling uplifted and inspired. But enough from us, here is Turia Pitt and her take on happiness.

“Going through hard times is a fundamental part of our happiness.”

 You mention you were pregnant with your second baby as you were writing this book, and then just after you handed in the manuscript to your publishers, the bushfires started tearing through so much of Australia, including your hometown. Then not long after that you welcomed beautiful baby Rahiti and seven weeks following his birth, the world realises it’s facing a pandemic. That is a huge start to the year! How did your research on happiness for the book help you during those times? Getting out into nature, meeting up with friends and family and having those really healthy social relationships helps us with our happiness. Then through the pandemic, we weren't able to go to, say, a national park and see friends and family, so I really wondered if (the book) would have relevance. But I realised that it actually has more relevance because everything I talk about, from showing gratitude, learning to savour the moments, really spending time with your family and being present - all of those things actually help us to be happier.

/ 18

I think just as we have moments of light, and happiness and joy, and excitement, we also have periods of shade, where we feel frustrated or hurt or angry. And it's all just part of the spectrum of life. All of those emotions are valid and all it means is that we're human and we're alive.

PRO FIL E

 You mention in the intro of the book that you are constantly being asked how you find so much happiness when you have gone through so much. How much did your own happiness practices and rituals inspire the book? I receive lots of questions from lots of people all over the world, and one of the main ones I get is, ‘how are you so happy?” and I guess what people are saying is ‘how are you so happy given all of the sh*t that you've been through?’ I was always a happy person before my accident, then once I got burnt and I was in hospital, I realised I really needed to work on my own happiness and my own mental health. So I started doing things like gratitude practices and learning to relish the small moments and trying to be mindful and being kind to myself. So all of those little things were elements that I picked up along the way.” During the research of this book I read a lot of cool papers and one of them was by a woman named Sonya Lybomirsky. The Happiness Pie (The Sustainable Happiness Model) is where 50% of our happiness is determined by our genes, 40% is determined by intentional activities and 10% is determined by life circumstances. So that means whether you go through cancer or you win the lottery, after a couple of years, you reach an equilibrium and you return to your pre-set state of happiness. So it's both good and bad, because a lot of our happiness is determined by genes. That's kind of bad. But the good news is that there's a massive 40% that we can increase or improve our happiness levels.”

I really think it is possible for all of us to be happier, if that's what we want. Because, we all go through different stages in our life, and maybe you're working really hard towards your uni degree, and might not make you very happy in the moment because you're spending all of your spare time studying and working. But you'll get a massive sense of satisfaction when it’s finished. I think we all just go through phases, and that's why I call happiness a bit of a wiggle line. There's no preset destination. Another juicy takeaway we found was when you talked about how making the bed in the morning can serve you throughout the whole day. What is one of your favourite tips from the book? Yes, I never used to make my bed! And Michael, my partner is a neat freak. He sent me the link to the YouTube video, and I totally changed my mind because making a bed is like such a small foundational start to the day. If you can make your bed, maybe you can drink two litres of water.

And you can drink two litres of water, maybe you can go to the gym. And if you can go to the gym, maybe you can, you know, fill in the blank for everyone. But my favourite tip from the book is just asking myself every morning, ‘what would make today great?’ You can feel the change in your body because you are anticipating a pleasurable experience in the day. It's not what you have to do for everyone else. It's just what would make your day. So for me, it's usually really simple. It's meeting up with a girlfriend for a coffee, it might be baking choc chip cookies, going for a run with my son. It just makes me feel better about myself and about the day that I'm about to have.

One of the things I learned through writing the book is that happiness is really found in our day to day life. It's not these gigantic cataclysmic events like heading off to the south of France, or, you know, running the New York Marathon. Those things are awesome. But we need to be able to find happiness in our everyday lives. And I think that really rang true during both the bushfire crisis and the coronavirus pandemic that we are still experiencing the world.

Your mum pops up throughout the book, she sounds like such a happy, joyful person. You describe her as ‘perpetually sunny and bursting with optimism.’ What have you learned from your mum about parenting and about being happy? My mum was really my first example of someone who is happy with their everyday life. She gets so excited about the really small things. So let's say she buys a new cleaning product, she'll be really excited about it! She can be really mindful and present in the moment. Spending time with their grandkids, she’s not thinking about all the other things she has to do. I really took a lot from mum - probably not when I was a teenager, because I found her insatiable zest really annoying - and now as an adult I see that it's actually a really beautiful thing. It’s really hard to maintain that optimism and sense of joy and to be always thinking about others and putting others first.” One of our favourite moments in the book is when you were younger and struggling with something like maths and you were so frustrated. And you said, ‘Mum, I can't do it.' And she said, ‘No, Turia, you can't do it yet.' She's just a really wise woman. I don't know how she knew to say that, but now I use it. If I ever tell myself I can't do something or it's too hard, I just say, well, you might not be able to do it today, you might not be able to do it yet, but it doesn't mean that you might not be able to do it in the future. I think I'll definitely be taking that into my parenting manual and what I'll do with my boys.” Turia is an absolute vault of wisdom and this is just a snippet of the interview we did with her on our KIDDO Chats podcast! Listen on your podcast app

You talk about the importance of getting a good night's sleep. What are your tips for tired parents to try and keep the tank full? If I have a bad night's sleep, I have to lower my expectations of what I can do the next day. I have to be kind to myself and say, ‘well, you didn't get a good night's sleep, not much you can do about it’. It's about checking in with yourself. There’s a whole chunk in the book on self love and how we should be nicer to ourselves, and the inner critic that we all have. Think about how you talk to your kids. I would never say to my son, ‘you are a terrible runner, why do you even bother? You might as well give up now.’ I would never speak to him like that! I would say to him, ‘darling, you did your best, you did a great job. The race didn't go your way. That's fine. You’re only human, we can’t be perfect all the time’. So it’s just about talking to ourselves how we would talk to somebody that we really care about and if you're a parent, it's easy. Just imagine what you would say to your kid.

Place bacon in a small non-stick frying pan over a medium heat and cook for 5 minutes or until golden, stirring occasionally. 3. For the dressing, combine mayonnaise, sour cream, garlic, mustard, lemon juice, salt and pepper together in a medium mixing bowl, stirring to combine. Add drained potato, half each of the gherkins, onion, egg and parsley, tossing until well combined. 4. In the News Ever seen a Tassie Devil? Well, if it wasn’t in a zoo, or in Tasmania, or in a Looney Tunes cartoon then I’d be pretty surprised. Tassie Devils have been extinct in the wild on mainland Australia for hundreds, even thousands of years! That is, until now… There’s a project going on in New South Wales to rewild Tasmanian Devils. Healthy little creatures are being released into a wild sanctuary where they’ll hopefully live happily ever after and make some little Tassie Devil babies! You see, the species has been endangered for a long time now because of hunting, habitat loss and disease. No, nothing like COVID-19! A nasty facial tumour disease that only infects the poor little Devils and has been hitting populations hard in Tasmania. Researchers and wildlife experts have been trying to help them though! That’s why you’ll see breeding programs in zoos and wildlife parks all

across the country, and some healthy Tasmanian Devils have also been transported to an island off Tasmania to see if they can thrive away from their infected cousins. Now this is the first time anyone’s tried to release some of the healthy animals back into the wild on mainland Australia! The Tassie Devils will be monitored closely to make sure they’re going well in their new New South Wales home. It’s hoped that if this rewilding plan works, we might even be spotting these meateating (carnivorous) marsupials all over Australia again in the future.

did you know… The Tasmanian Devil is the world’s biggest carnivorous marsupial? If you don’t know what carnivorous means then keep reading...

butterflies in my stomach. But a few nerves mean it’s going to be a good show.

Did it hurt when you fell from the top of a Burrawang tree? No! Luckily there was lots of grass on the ground, so I had a nice soft landing. But it was a bit scary on the way down. I loved being at the top of my tree. I could see so much from up there. I love my burrow that little bit more, though. There’s something so cosy about it!

What is your favourite thing to do in Adelaide? I love going hiking and spending time outdoors. There’s lots of very good trees here, and a lot of wonderful places to burrow. Adelaide is such a busy place… much busier than where I live. I love to be around so many people.

I love to curl up under my blanket each night and relax before I go to sleep. What do you want for your birthday? There are two things I love more than anything: receiving mail and having a dance with my friends.

Freddy Lupin is from a noble family of werewolves, but his first Transwolfation (that’s when a human turns into a WOLF… so COOL) ends in a disaster because he becomes… wait for it… A POODLE!!! This book was just so funny. It’s awesome how Freddy can understand both humans and dogs when he’s a poodle and I laughed so hard when Freddy turned pink at the dog groomer. Not the best colour for a wannabe werewolf! One of the messages behind the book is that Freddy is still Freddy, even when he’s a poodle not a wolf, which proves that it doesn’t matter what you look like if you’re good inside. I like it when funny books also have a good lesson you can take away.

MEET THIS MONTHS DOER Turn the beat up because you’re tuning into DJ Bailey J! Bailey Jacob Sorensen otherwise known as @theyoungandtherestlessdjs started DJ’ing three years ago when he was only 11! It all started one day when (without any practice) Bailey decided to take the stage at Little Bang Brewery and instantly wowed the crowd. It was then and there when he discovered that his passion for music extended further than simply listening to it, but sharing it as well! Now a veteran he’s played more than 30 gigs across different venues such as Sparkke at the Whitmore, Cluck Yeah Festival, Twilight Sessions, Brewboys Brewery, and Beer & Barbeque Festival. He’s even visited nursing homes to play old-school tunes for the elderly. Bailey’s love of music stemmed from buying vinyl

records with his Dad. The pair shared their love for golden oldies like The Beatles and David Bowie, but these days you’ll catch Bailey spinning all kinds of tracks. “Share your passion, like I do with my music. DJ’ing is 99.9% an adult industry but it has not stood in my way, taking the stage and also organising my own events, meeting some amazing people.” See what DJ Bailey is getting up to @theyoungandtherestlessdjs @getaroundit_sa

Dance-ability

What are your future plans for All Abilities Cheer and Dance? AACD offers workshops for schools, service providers and day option programs, as well as school holiday workshops. The future of AACD is to deliver these services to all disability-focused schools and programs in SA.

All Abilities Cheer and Dance

With 25 years of personal family experience with disabilities, Alana Giaccio is passionate about contributing to inclusion support, equal rights and spreading kindness. With the combination of Alana’s unwavering dedication to bringing people with disabilities together, and her desire to have a career that somehow incorporated the fun and creative world of dance, All Abilities Cheer and Dance was born. AACD is the only cheer and dance school in South Australia to offer recreational, competition and online, all inclusive, allages cheerleading and dance classes, solely for people with all types of disabilities and additional needs. We chat with Alana about how it all started and what parents can expect when enrolling their child in AACD. Tell us about how All Abilities Cheer and Dance started? Having two brothers with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Intellectual Disability, I’m passionate about equal rights for people with disabilities. I always wanted my career to involve dance somehow. After I injured my back with a stress fracture in 2012, I didn’t think I could pursue a career in dance. Little did I know that I’d be opening a dance studio for people with disabilities! The experience of providing a service that doesn’t currently exist in South Australia is my biggest and proudest achievement to date. Growing up, I always knew there was a gap in the market, I just didn’t think I’d be the one filling it! Personally, I am proud to offer a unique sport to people who might not have had the chance before. I’m happy that more people can be included and I’m so delighted to see their parents joyous that their child can participate in something, make friends, develop new skills and have fun.

/ 28

What can children and parents expect at a class? Children can expect 45 minutes of fun dance games, warm up and cool down exercises with props, as well as a dance routine. Adults can expect 60 minutes of dance technique, flexibility exercises, and jazz, pom and hip hop routines. We have a viewing area in all of our classes and it's wonderful to see the joy of the parents and support workers watching their loved ones participate in something that wasn't accessible to them before. Most importantly, everyone can expect a safe and supportive environment. What are the key benefits of dance and movement for children with disabilities? Dance is a great way to build a person’s balance and proprioception, spatial awareness, visual stabilisation, musicality, teamwork, self-confidence and communication skills, all while making friends. I've been very involved in my brother’s lives and have helped with their development. Bringing those skills, I've learnt first-hand in my personal life to my dance business gives me great joy.

We also offer competition and performance opportunities. Being affiliated with Special Olympics Australia could put Adelaide residents on the national or international stage! Our goal is to one day compete at the International Cheer Union World Championship (ICU Worlds) in the Special Olympics section in Orlando, Florida.

You have a young team, how did you come together? My team is a mix of amazing young women that all have personal experience with disability. It was super important for me to have a team of people that understand the needs of people with disabilities from a family perspective, as well as have dance experience. The majority of my team are women I’ve previously danced with for many years and created long-lasting friendships with. We are now all back together to create something meaningful, in-demand and genuine.

Why tantrums don’t have to be a bad thing Self-regulation is “the ability to manage our own energy states, emotions, behaviours and attention, in ways that are socially acceptable and help us achieve a positive goal such as maintaining good relationships, learning and wellbeing” – Dr Stuart Shanker. By definition, we can quickly learn and understand that selfregulation is a dynamic and complex process.

QUENTIN KENIHAN INCLUSIVE PLAYSPACE To open December 2020 The design for the new Quentin Kenihan inclusive play space in the city has recently been revealed by the Adelaide City Council, following an extensive community engagement process.

Occupational Therapist, Rochelle Mutton

Director of Motivate Kids; an Occupational Therapy practice that supports children and their families to live their best life. Rochelle’s passion for child brain development, empowering families and mirroring back to them their child’s incredible potential is the essence of her work. Rochelle recognises that her greatest teachers are the children that she works with who remind her to continue to be playful and curious and it is their families who remind her of the importance of connection because it is only within a relationship that healing can occur.

What if our children’s ‘meltdowns’ or ‘tantrums’ are not seen as ‘naughty’ or ‘defiant’ behaviours yet instead a cry for connection and regulation? The labels that are commonly used to describe many behaviours really are just the tip of the iceberg. We cannot understand the reason for our children’s behaviour until we look beneath the surface. We also cannot reason with our children in the midst of their ‘meltdown’ because they are strongly situated in their emotion brain whilst their thinking and rationalising brain has ‘gone offline’. It is up to us as adults to build this bridge to guide our children from stress and dysregulation to a calm and organised state where they are consistently and emotionally held. It is in this relational process between adult and child, our children learn that their emotions are not ‘neverending’ and that they are not alone to try to manage such big feelings. Our children therefore learn to regulate first by being regulated (we call this co-regulation). The first step on this bridge to support our children to regulate is to bring our awareness to our own state of regulation. This means we must explore the ways to calm our own mind and body in order to be available to help our children learn to do the same. Be rest assured we are all still working on this every day, you’re not alone! WHY IS SELF-REGULATION IMPORTANT? Self-regulation supports our children’s ability to sustain attention, switch between tasks, control impulses and cope with frustrations, engage meaningfully with others, and develop empathy and resilience. A child’s ability to regulate has also been shown to have a higher correlation to academic success than IQ. It can therefore be suggested that learning to self-regulate is the key school readiness skill. This skill enables a child to be able to respond (response-able) to the ups and downs and the curly whirly’s on this journey we call life.

WHEN DOES REGULATION START TO DEVELOP? Regulation starts when baby is in utero. Baby grows and is influenced by the environment of mum's womb. Baby experiences the same emotions of stress and calm to events that mum does. WHY DOES MY 2-YEAR-OLD KEEP SAYING NO? Mum asks child “Do you want a banana?” Child replies “NO! I want a banana!” Before two years of age a child’s ‘yes’ is the same as their parents; to a degree they identify themselves as one with their parent. Yet as the child’s brain grows and develops, they must learn to say ‘no’ for their ‘own yes’ to have meaning. They are learning that they have an identity that differs to that of their parents. Hang in there parents – reinforce how great it is your child is able to share with you their wants and needs “Great! Your body really does know what it feels like eating.” NOW WHAT? We must be compassionately curious about what our children’s behaviour is trying to tell us. What is really going on under the surface? Regulating ourselves as adults is the first step to be able to provide a supported space for our children to learn to regulate. This starts with an awareness of the sensations in our body, breathe into these sensations without judgement; acknowledge they are there. And this is only the tip of the iceberg for us!

Check out Motivate Kids Facebook page for some strategies to get you started on the path of regulation for you and your child. Prospect and Salisbury. @motivatekids motivatekids.com.au

The playspace, located in Rymill Park / Murlawirrapurka (Park 14), will be a fun, exciting and safe environment for children of all abilities to enjoy. It follows a $1 million State Government commitment to the City of Adelaide to build an inclusive playspace to honour the late and much-loved disability advocate Quentin Kenihan. The process included hosting an inclusive play-day in October 2019 to gather feedback on what would be a great experience for all ages and abilities. The play equipment includes a wheelchair trampoline, sound and sensory garden, water play, swings and a carousel.

OTHER FEATURES INCLUDE: accessible toilets (including an accredited Changing Places facility) accessible paths barbeques, shelter and seats fully fenced playspace Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor said she looked forward to families enjoying the new playspace. “Our team has worked closely with Quentin’s family and friends, Council’s Access and Inclusion Panel and key members of the community to design a playspace that Quentin would be proud of, and that will hopefully be warmly embraced by children of all abilities from across Adelaide”. Quentin fiercely advocated for an inclusive playground in the CBD so it will be fantastic to see his legacy live on and his dream become a reality in the next few months. Construction commenced in August this year and is expected to finish by December 2020. cityofadelaide.com.au

SUPERMARKET SWAP

Have you ever stood in the aisle of the supermarket wondering which is the best brand to buy? Ingredient lists have become so difficult to read, with so many additives and preservatives being added to our food in 2020. Ideally, we would make all of our food from scratch; but realistically most of us are shopping at the supermarket every week. On a mission to help my son, I started to make simple swaps when I shopped to only buy brands that are 100% free from nasties. It takes no time at all, but has had such a positive impact on my child’s health & behaviour.

SENSORY SESSIONS: Saturday 24 October, 4pm - 5.30pm Sunday 25 October, 9am - 10.30am Saturday 21 November, 4pm - 5.30pm Sunday 22 November, 9am - 10.30am

I started Supermarket Swap as I wanted to raise awareness of what is sneakily added into our food and make it easy for other time-poor parents to slowly make some simple changes too. Happy Shopping, Nabula x

SUMMER SWAP! This is one summer treat that if you’re not careful, can be loaded with a lot of nasty additives & preservatives.

Swings for Sensory Processing

Making a simple swap when you shop, can help your child avoid the hyperactivity and emotional-meltdowns that often follow when little people consume artificial colours and preservatives such as Sodium Benzoate; which are sadly loaded into the popular Zooper Doopers.

Sensory swings are a powerful tool to support and encourage any child’s development, and are even more powerful for kids that have sensory needs, SPD, ADHD, or Autism because they directly work to improve sensory processing. As a result, they can help kids calm down or get the sensations they’re craving, as well as promoting coordination, balance and helping to strengthen muscles and improve motor skills.

Proud as Punch Mini Pops are delicious and will keep your kiddos happy all summer long!

What are Sensory Swings Sensory swings come in so many different shapes and sizes, but they all serve a purpose. Occupational therapists have been using them in therapy for years, but more recently they’ve become readily available and affordable for families to use in their own homes. Suitable for children ages 3 years and above.
