Cubetto: Off-Screen Coding Toy for Kids Give your little ones a head start in technology with Cubetto, the Off-Screen Coding Toy for Kids. They say that coding will be an essential skill for future generations, and this toy makes it fun. Cubetto is a friendly wooden robot that teaches your kids the basic concepts of programming while they play. Because youngsters already spend way too long looking at screens, this toy has no screen and no WiFi. Instead, your child goes on an adventure across the world map, using directional blocks to tell Cubetto where to go. The cute robot then follows these directions. There are several quests to try, and your child can also teach Cubetto new tricks. You can even play crazy golf or build a maze! It’s perfect for Montessori learning, and great fun for all the family.

LEGO's Massive "Home Of The Brick" Delights Fans In Denmark

12

On September 28, 2017, LEGO fans of all ages finally got the chance to visit the massive 82,000 square-feet, 100-feet high, LEGO house aka “Home of The Brick.” Located in the iconic toy’s hometown of Billund, Denmark, the impressive structure, that has been in the works since 2014, is the brainchild of Danish architect Bjarke Ingels. Its exterior, resembling 21 gigantic LEGO blocks, is covered in colorful tiles giving the illusion that the entire building is made of the popular bricks. A 2X4 keystone brick placed on top welcomes visitors flying into Billund Airport with light beams from its eight knobs. Part public art piece, part amusement park, the LEGO house has something for everyone — from the youngest enthusiasts to AFOLs (Adult Fans of LEGO). Upon entering, visitors encounter four color coded areas, each signifying a different aspect of play and learning. The Red Zone allows kids to put their creative skills to work using the millions of colorful bricks scattered under a cascading LEGO “waterfall.” The Green Zone, which tests social skills with storytelling and roleplay, includes activities like writing and directing a LEGO movie. The Blue Zone is dedicated to cognitive play, with fun tasks like guiding robots on Arctic missions to rescue trapped mammoths. The Yellow Zone allows visitors to express their emotions by using the bricks to build fish and releasing them into a large “aquarium” or planting their LEGO flower creations in the extensive LEGO meadow. Those tired of playing with the over 25 million bricks, or not in the mood, can admire the large gallery of fan-built LEGO creations, learn about the toy’s fascinating 85-year-old history, or buy themselves a set or two at the LEGO store. The Home of the Brick also features numerous public spaces for visitors to relax in, as well as a number of playgrounds to entertain kids. While the outdoor spaces are free, visitors who want to visit the experience zones and galleries have to pay 199 Danish Krone ($31.56) per person. No park excursion is complete without a good meal. At the Home of the Brick, visitors can choose from one of three restaurants — Brickaccino Café, Le Gourmet, and Mini Chef. While all have unique features, it is Mini Chef that is likely to be the favorite with kids. The family restaurant allows patrons to build their order with color-coded LEGO bricks. They then insert it into a screen on the table and watch as the animated chefs “make” the food. When ready, the meal is placed inside a cool-looking LEGO lunchbox and delivered by a robot waiter via a conveyor belt.

Help NASA Nickname This Remote Space Object

After providing the world with spectacular close-up images of Pluto and its icy moons in the summer of 2015, NASA’s New Horizons is zipping off into uncharted territory a billion miles away. On January 1, 2019, the spacecraft will fly past the most remote world ever explored by mankind. Dubbed (486958) 2014 MU69, the small frozen object, which lies in the Kuiper Belt, may help scientists reveal the origins of our solar system. To mark this historic event, the US space agency is asking the public to help find a nickname that is easier to remember than the elaborate moniker assigned by scientists. To be considered, the nickname should not have any religious or political importance or be of commercial value. Also, though it can be serious, fun, or anything in between, it must be appropriate for the inaugural exploration of this distant world that lies at the outer edge of the solar system. Given that some experts think MU69 might be a binary – two objects pulled close by their common gravity — two nicknames suggestions are better than one. Should the icy bodies be joined, what scientists call “contact binary,” only one nickname will be needed. However, if they are separated by empty space, the second name will undoubtedly be useful. MU69 could also have some moons that need naming, but those will have to wait until New Horizons can confirm the details. Those that can’t get their creative juices flowing can vote for one or more of the 15 names that are already in contention. They include Año Nuevo, (New Year in Spanish) to mark the day when New Horizons will be visiting the remote object, and Camalor, a fictional city of an alien species that lives on a small cold world similar to MU69. Also being considered is Patagonia, the region of Argentina and Chile where the scientists discovered its binary nature. Olaf, a Norse word which means relic or "ancestral heritage,” seems particularly appropriate given that MU69 is a relic from the time our solar system was formed. All the suggestions and votes had to be submitted by December 1. NASA and the New Horizons team will select and announce a winner in early January 2018. The winning entry will be used until the January 2019 flyby reveals more insight into the cold world. NASA will then work with the International Astronomical Union, responsible for naming space objects, to come up with MU69’s permanent, more formal, name. November 2017

Australian Scientists Hope The Giant Triton Snail Will Help Save The Great Barrier Reef

Over the past 30 years, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef has experienced a 50 percent loss in coral. Though part of the decline is being attributed to the warmer ocean temperatures caused by climate change, about half of the damage is due to the proliferation of the crown-of-thorns starfish (COTS). The deadly predators can devour as much as 53 square feet (five square meters) of live coral annually. Native to the region, the starfish — which grow as big as 32 inches across, have over 21 arms, and are covered in poisonous spikes — are beneficial in small numbers. They help keep faster-growing coral reef in control, allowing slower growing colonies to form. However, the recent population explosion, combined with two consecutive years of coral bleaching, is destroying the reef at an unprecedented rate. The starfish population is currently being controlled with bile salt solutions or ordinary household vinegar. However, this is a tedious process that requires dive teams to inject each specimen individually. Now, Australian marine scientists are hoping to get some help from a natural COTS predator – the Pacific or giant triton, snail. Named after the Greek god Triton — son of Poseidon and god of the sea — it is one of the world’s largest sea snails, reaching lengths of up to two feet! The marine gastropods are so good at hunting down the starfish that even their scent is enough to send the sea stars scampering. Unfortunately, the endangered giant tritons, which have been hunted down for their beautiful shells, are hard to find. Also,

since they only consume a few starfish a week, it would take an army of snails to make a difference. To try to increase the snails’ numbers by breeding them in captivity, researchers from the Australian Institute of Marine Sciences went in search of them. It took them two years to find just eight specimens, but the effort was worth it given that over the past month, they have produced over 100,000 tiny larvae. The researchers hope to learn more about the lifecycle of these elusive marine creatures as they grow and release them once they are old enough to prey on the COTS. Cherie Motti, leader of the triton breeding program, says, "If we can have a natural predator doing the job for us [killing the starfish], it will be the best outcome." Hopefully, the researchers will be successful in their endeavor. Besides creating thousands of jobs and adding over $50 billion to the country’s economy, the Great Barrier Reef is also crucial to the local ecosystem. As you may know, the brightly colored calcium carbonate structures are a symbiosis, or partnership, between coral polyps and zooxanthellae. The polyps provide a home for the singlecelled organisms in exchange for food and the vivid color we have come to love. In addition to sheltering the zooxanthellae, the strong corals help protect the shoreline from storms and floods. The polyps, which use calcium ions and dissolved carbon dioxide to form the calcium carbonate skeletons, also help reduce the level of the toxic gas in the oceans. Hence, it is imperative to do all we can to save these delicate structures.

Child Prodigy, Alma Deutscher, Is Taking The Musical World By Storm At first sight, Alma Deutscher, a twelve-year-old girl from England with a penchant for dresses, appears to be like any other typical tween. She loves to skip rope, read, bake cookies, and engage in make-believe play with her younger sister Helen. But this unassuming youngster, who composed her first musical sonata at age six, first short opera at age seven, and first full-length opera based on Cinderella at age ten, is anything but average. Though her parents downplay her extraordinary talent as “imaginative, just a child playing,” young Alma is being hailed as “little Mozart” by the music world. Alma’s operatic take on the classic fairy tale, which she began writing at age eight, has a slight twist. Her Cinderella is a composer who meets her Prince Charming through a melody. “I thought it was a little bit silly that Cinderella was found by a shoe, why a shoe?” She said. “In my Cinderella, she sings the beginning of a ballad — but at midnight she flees. Eventually, the prince finds her after asking all the maidens of the land to sing the end of the ballad.” The opera’s debut performance at the Casino Baumgarten Theater in Vienna, Austria on December 29, 2016, where the 11-year-old deftly switched between the piano and the violin, received rave reviews. The young prodigy has since premiered a new piano concerto at the Carinthian Summer Festival in Austria and played her inaugural concert in China. When not on tour, Alma, who is homeschooled, has a surprisingly normal life. The young girl spends her mornings composing or practicing her music. After lunch, she takes a break to jump rope (which helps her creative process), read, or play make-believe with

Helen. Then come some traditional math or history lessons from her mother, a former professor, followed by dinner, bath, and bedtime at 8:30 pm. In case you are wondering, Alma does not have a mobile phone, nor does her house have any televisions! But the young girl does not mind, saying, “I don’t watch television at all — it is much more interesting to read a book and imagine how the story would be.” November 2017

International Tongue Twister Day November 12

14

It’s International Tongue Twister Day! “Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.” “A quick witted cricket critic.” “She sells seashells by the sea shore.” How many other tongue twisters can you think of to celebrate this tongue-twisting holiday? Tongue twisters have fascinated people throughout history. Did you know that Peter Piper is a historical figure? Pierre Poivre was a one-armed French pirate and horticulturist during the mid-1700s. Poivre was notorious for stealing spice nuts (known as “peppers”) from Dutch trade ships, and using them to plant his garden. On at least one occasion he stole half a bushel of nutmegs, which inspired the tongue twister we know and love today. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the most difficult tongue twister in the English language is: “The sixth sick sheikh's sixth sheep's sick.” To celebrate International Tongue Twister Day (always the 2nd Sunday in November), read a rhyming book or practice some of your favorite tongue twisters with your friends and family! November 2017

The history and the origin of International Tongue Twister Day are still unknown. But the Day was created to fascinate the people. The best way to learn the Tongue Twister is by reading the sentence slowly at the start and make sure that you pronounce the beginning and end of the word strongly. Then read them faster and faster with the clear pronunciation of words. You can also try them by standing in front of the mirror. More than fun, practising the Tongue Twister on a daily basis will strengthen and stretch the muscles involved in speech and will highlight which sounds you are struggling with. Hence International Tongue Twister Day is a perfect day to try some of the popular Tongue Twisters.

TOP 10 POPULAR TONGUE TWISTERS Celebrate the Tongue Twister by practising the following Tongue Twisters: Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. Did Peter Piper pick a peck of pickled peppers? If Peter Piper Picked a peck of pickled peppers, Where’s the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked? She sells seashells by the seashore. The shells she sells are surely seashells. So if she sells shells on the seashore, I’m sure she sells seashore shells. A skunk sat on a stump. The stump thunk the skunk stunk. The skunk thunk the stump stunk. A tutor who tooted a flute, Tried to tutor two tooters to toot. Said the two to their tutor, Is it harder toot or To tutor two tooters to toot? How much wood would a woodchuck chuck, If a woodchuck could chuck wood? He would chuck, he would, as much as he could, And chuck as much as a woodchuck would, If a woodchuck could chuck wood. When a doctor doctors a doctor, does the doctor doing the doctoring doctor as the doctor being doctored wants to be doctored or does the doctor doing the doctoring doctor as he wants to doctor? If two witches would watch two watches, which witch would watch which watch? Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear. Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair. Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn’t very fuzzy, was he? November 2017

Moscow is the capital city of Russia.

It takes approximately 6 hours and 38 minutes to fly from Kuwait to Moscow. The city has three international airports - Sheremetyevo (SVO) which is the busiest, Domodedovo (DME) and Vnukovo (VKO).

18

There are many different ways to get around in Moscow. You can use the metro, tram, bus, trolley-bus or taxi. You can also hire a Marshrutka. These are privately owned minibus taxis able to carry 15-20 passengers. They follow a fixed route and were set up to relieve overcrowding of Moscow’s public transport. November 2017

Most tourists head straight to Red Square. The name comes from the Russian word ‘krasnaya’ which means both ‘red’ and ‘beautiful’.

Plan your trip carefully. Moscow’s summers can be hot and humid but they also have very long, cold winters when temperatures can drop to −10 °C (14 °F).

Red Square is home to the Kremlin. The name means ‘fortress inside a city’ – very apt when you consider its five palaces, four cathedrals, the enclosing Kremlin Wall and Kremlin towers. The complex is also home to the Grand Kremlin Palace.

You will also find the Ivan the Great Bell Tower within the Kremlin complex. It stands at 81 metres tall (266 ft).

If you’re into gems, don’t forget to visit the Diamond Fund within the Kremlin. This has significant historical importance as well being a beautiful sight!

20

Another attraction in Red Square is Lenin’s Mausoleum. Also known as Lenin’s Tomb, it is the resting place of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin. His body has been on public display there since 1924. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but is still a major tourist attraction in Moscow.

Saint Basil’s Cathedral is also situated in Red Square. It was built from 1555–61 on the orders of Ivan the Terrible. Originally, it included eight side churches around a ninth central church. A tenth church was erected in 1588. The building is shaped like a flame of a bonfire and is instantly recognizable.

Ostankino Tower is another instantly recognizable landmark. At 540.1 metres (1,772ft) it is the tallest free-standing structure in Europe. It was erected to mark the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution and is named after the district in which it sits. Building began in 1963 and was completed in 1967. The views from the top are awesome!

Don’t forget to visit the Tsarytsino Open-Air History and Architectural Museum. This dates back to the 18th century and includes a historical landscaped park, greenhouses, ponds and an impressive fountain.

For shopping, head to Izmailovsky Market. You can find everything here from postcards to a traditional Russian hat, to those famous Russian dolls.

If you’re a space addict, head to the Space Museum (Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics). This contains lots of Soviet and Russian spacerelated exhibits – 85,000 different items to be exact! It attracts 300,000 visitors every year.

Before you leave Moscow, make sure you try their Beef Stroganoff. This popular meal is one of Russia’s national dishes and is based on a traditional Russian recipe.

The scientific name for the toucan is ‘Ramphastidae’.

It is one of the most recognizable birds in the world.

You will find toucans in the tropical rain forests of South America. In fact, over 40 different species of toucan live there. 22

The Toco is the largest species of toucan. It can measure up to 25 inches (63.5 cm)!

They usually live in groups in a tree hallow.

They communicate by calling and hooting loudly to each other.

Toucans have a giant, brightly coloured beak. This is serrated like a knife. They use it to grab and peel fruit.

October 2017

Although we tend to think that their beaks are orange, they can also be brown, red, green, yellow or black.

One thing we can be sure of though is that they have the largest beak of all the world’s birds.

They use their long tongue to catch prey such as frogs, small reptiles and insects.

They also use their beak to control their blood temperature. The more blood that flows through their beak, the more heat they release. When they sleep, they tuck their beak into their feathers to keep warm.

Toucans rarely fly. They spend most of their time hopping from tree to tree in search of food. If they need to fly, they mainly glide and only over short distances. 23

Both parents sit on their eggs to incubate them. They lay 2-4 eggs each year.

November 2017

When toucans are born, they are very tiny and do not reach full size for many months. Baby toucans do not have large beaks either. The beak develops over time as the toucan grows. The birds have 4 large claws – 2 at the front and 2 at the back – allowing them to cling onto trees and branches.

Toucans have many predators in the rain forests including large birds of prey and big cats such as the jaguar. Their eggs are also at risk from snakes, rats and weasels. 24

Unfortunately, some people like to keep toucans as pets so they are also at risk from humans.

Locally, some believe the toucan is sacred and that it links the world of spirits to the world of the living.

Elias Howe

Inventor of the "Lockstitch" sewing machine Elias Howe was born on 9th July 1819 in Spencer, Massachusetts.

His first job, in 1835, was that of an apprentice in a textile factory.

26

In 1837 the US suffered a financial crisis (which later became known as the Panic of 1837). During the resulting recession, many mills were closed down. Elias moved from Spencer to Cambridge and began work as a mechanic.

He followed this with an apprenticeship with Ari Davis, a master mechanic who specialized in the manufacture and repair of chronometers. November 2017

During this time, Elias began forming the idea of a sewing machine. He was not the first to come up with such an idea but with his refinements to the design concept, he was awarded the first US patent (on 10th September 1846) for a sewing machine using a ‘lockstitch’ design.

GREAT MINDS

The things which made his machine unique were: - A needle with the eye at the point - A shuttle operating beneath the cloth to form the lock stitch - An automatic feed Unfortunately, commercial success did not automatically follow and Elias found it difficult to find investors. 27

In October 1846, his elder brother Amasa, travelled to the UK and sold the first machine to William Thomas in London for £ £250 (that was a lot of money in those days!) William Thomas owned a factory which manufactured corsets, umbrellas and valises. November 2017

Having married in 1841, Elias went on to have three children with his wife Elizabeth. He then moved to London with this family. However, following a business dispute with William Thomas and the subsequent ill health of his wife, he returned to the US. Sadly, his wife died in 1849.

28

Now penniless, Elias was faced with a court case. Isaac Singer and Walter Hunt were selling a machine with his lockstitch design. He successfully defended his patent and won considerable royalties from the sales of the Singer machine. In 1865, he established The Howe Machine Co. in Bridgeport, Connecticut. This was a family business involving his sons-in-law, elder brother and nephew. They also opened a factory in New York City called The Howe Sewing Machine Co. Elias’s sewing machine won a gold medal at the Paris Exhibition in 1867. November 2017

The same year, he was awarded the Légion d'honneur by Napoleon III for his invention. Today, it is widely recognized that his invention changed the sewing industry forever. Elias died on 3rd October 1867 of gout and a massive blood clot. He’s buried in Brooklyn, New York. He ended his days as a multi-millionaire. In 2004, he was inducted into the US National Inventors Hall of Fame.

Questions: 1. What was Elias’ first job? 2. Ari Davis was a master what? 3. What was Elias’ unique design called? 4. What happened in 1867? 5. What three things were made at William Thomas’ factory? 6. On what date was he awarded his patent? 7. How many children did Elias have with his wife Elizabeth? 8. Elias fought a court case against Isaac Singer and who else? 9. In which city was the Howe Sewing Machine Co set up? 10. When and where did Elias die?

Carambola is more commonly known as ‘starfruit’ because of its shape.

The fruit is best consumed shortly after ripening, when it is yellow. If picked when green, it will turn yellow if stored at room temperature – a bit like a banana.

It is native to the Philippines, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Malaysia grows more carambola than any other country in the world. 30

Carambola can bruise very easily so remember to handle with care!

The flowers of a carambola are pink/lavender and very fragrant.

If conditions are good, one carambola tree can produce 200400 pounds of fruit in one year.

November 2017

Carambola fruit is an excellent source of ascorbic acid which helps to maintain bones, teeth and skin.

It is also rich is vitamin C as well as soluble fiber. This can help reduce cholesterol and keep your bowels healthy.

The flesh of a carambola fruit has a texture similar to that of a grape. It is extremely juicy. The water extracted from the leaves and roots of a carambola tree can help in the treatment of headaches, ringworm and chickenpox.

The fruit is also used for the treatment of sore eyes.

November 2017

31

The fruit is susceptible to pests particularly fruit flies, ants and birds.

32

Carambola is a popular ingredient in smoothies, juice drinks, salsa, chutney and salads. It is also used in seafood dishes and desserts.

Due to the star shape, they make an excellent garnish.

The Extremely Inconvenient Adventures of Bronte Mettlestone by Jaclyn Moriarty

Bronte Mettlestone's parents ran away to have adventures when she was a baby, leaving her to be raised by her Aunt Isabelle and the Butler. She's had a perfectly pleasant childhood of afternoon teas and riding lessons - and no adventures, thank you very much. But Bronte's parents have left extremely detailed (and bossy) instructions for Bronte in their will. The instructions must be followed to the letter, or disaster will befall Bronte's home. She is to travel the kingdoms and empires, perfectly alone, delivering special gifts to her ten other aunts. There is a farmer aunt who owns an orange orchard and a veterinarian aunt who specialises in dragon care, a pair of aunts who captain a cruise ship together and a former rockstar aunt who is now the reigning monarch of a small kingdom.

Six-time Coretta Scott King Award winner and four-time Caldecott Honor recipient Bryan Collier brings this classic, inspirational poem to life, written by poet Useni Eugene Perkins.

Hey black child, Do you know who you are? Who you really are? Do you know you can be What you want to be If you try to be What you can be? This lyrical, empowering poem celebrates black children and seeks to inspire all young people to dream big and achieve their goals.

PNEUMONIA WORLD PNEUMONIA DAY – NOVEMBER 12

It is also designed to promote the prevention and treatment for Pneumonia and to generate the action to fight the illness. World Pneumonia Day marks the severity of Pneumonia and encourages more organisations around the world to look 36

at the methods of combating the Pneumonia. Pneumonia Day is not an official holiday and the day is celebrated by raising awareness about the Pneumonia and their prevention methods.

create the Global Coalition against Child Pneumonia. Pneumonia is a curable and preventable disease that affects nearly 155 million children under the age of 5 and kills 1.6 million kids every year. It makes them the number 1 killer of children under the age of 5, claiming more young lives than Malaria, AIDS and measles. Still, several peoples are unaware of Pneumonia’s devastating death toll. Because of this, Pneumonia has been dominated as a priority on the global health agenda and rarely gets coverage in the news media. Hence World Pneumonia Day is created to bring this health crisis to the attention of the public and to encourage the policy makers and grassroots organisers to combat Pneumonia. Streptococcus Pneumoniae is the common bacteria that cause Pneumonia. The primary symptoms of Pneumonia include fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath and fatigue. By taking antibiotics, you can prevent Pneumonia by controlling the bacterial and fungal infections. Hence Pneumonia Day is a perfect day to raise awareness about Pneumonia and their prevention methods.

Pneumonia is a general term for lung infections that can be caused by a variety of germs (viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites). Most cases, though, are caused by viruses, including adenoviruses, rhinovirus, influenza virus (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), human metapneumovirus, and parainfluenza virus (which causes croup). Often, pneumonia begins after an upper respiratory tract infection (an infection of the nose and throat), with symptoms starting after 2 or 3 days of a cold or sore throat. It then moves to the lungs. Fluid, white blood cells, and debris start to gather in the air spaces of the lungs and block the smooth passage of air, making it harder for the lungs to work well.

Signs and Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending on a child's age and what caused the pneumonia, but can include:

38

lfever lshaking chills lcough lstuffy nose lvery fast breathing (in some cases, this is the only symptom) lbreathing with grunting or wheezing sounds lworking hard to breathe; this can include flaring of the nostrils, belly lbreathing, or movement of the muscles between the ribs lvomiting lchest pain labdominal pain, which often happens because a child is coughing and working hard to breathe lless activity lloss of appetite (in older kids) or poor feeding (in infants), which may lead to dehydration lin extreme cases, bluish or gray color of the lips and fingernails November 2017

Kids with pneumonia caused by bacteria usually become sick fairly quickly, starting with a sudden high fever and unusually fast breathing. CLINIC

Kids with pneumonia caused by viruses probably will have symptoms that appear more gradually and are less severe, though wheezing can be more common.

Some types of pneumonia can be prevented by vaccines. Kids usually get routine immunizations against Haemophilus influenzae and whooping cough (pertussis) beginning at 2 months of age. Vaccines are now also given against the pneumococcus, a common cause of bacterial pneumonia. Children with chronic illnesses can be at special risk for certain types of pneumonia, so they might need additional vaccines or protective immune medication. ("Chronic" means an ongoing illness or one that goes away and keeps coming back.) The flu vaccine is recommended for all healthy kids ages 6 months through 19 years, but especially for kids with chronic illnesses such as heart or lung disorders or asthma.

Home Care

39

Anyone with pneumonia needs to get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluids while the body works to fight the infection. If your child has bacterial pneumonia and the doctor has prescribed antibiotics, give the medicine on schedule for as long as directed. This will help your child recover faster and help prevent the infection from spreading to other household members. For wheezing, the doctor might recommend using a nebulizer or an inhaler. Ask the doctor before you use a medicine to treat your child's cough because cough suppressants stop the lungs from clearing mucus, which isn't helpful in some types of pneumonia. Over-the-counter cough and cold medications are not recommended for any kids under 6 years old. Take your child's temperature at least once each morning and each evening, and call the doctor if it goes above 102°F (38.9°C) in an older infant or child, or above 100.4°F (38°C) in a baby under 6 months of age. Check your child's lips and fingernails to make sure they are rosy and pink. Call your doctor if they are bluish or gray, which is a sign that the lungs are not getting enough oxygen. November 2017

Types of Clouds When you look up in the sky, you realize that no two clouds look exactly alike. Clouds are formed from water vapor that condenses then clusters together in droplets. There are many different types of clouds that can be seen. The types of clouds are determined based on what they look like and how high they are in the atmosphere.

40

High-Level Clouds High-level clouds are formed in altitudes above 20,000 feet. Because the temperatures are so cold at this elevation, these clouds are formed from ice crystals. Cirrus clouds are thin and wispy clouds that are blown by high winds. They usually mean the day will have fair or pleasant weather, and follow the direction that the air moves at the altitude they are found at. Cirrostratus clouds are like very thin sheets of clouds that cover large parts of the sky. Cirrocumulus clouds look like small round puffs in the sky. Sometimes they are called mackerel clouds because they look similar to fish scales.

Mid-Level Clouds Mid-level clouds are found in altitudes between 6,500 to 20,000 feet. They are formed mainly of water droplets, but can also be made up of ice crystals when the temperature is cold enough. Altocumulus clouds are composed of water droplets and are gray and puffy. These clouds are usually seen on warm and humid summer mornings and are usually a sign that thunderstorms will follow later in the day. Altostratus clouds are made up of ice crystals and water droplets. They can cover the entire sky and form before rain storms.

Low-Level Clouds Low-level clouds are found below 6,500 feet and although they are mostly made up of water droplets they can also be composed of ice particles and snow in very cold temperatures. Stratus clouds are among the low-lying clouds. They are gray clouds that cover the entire sky and can be the result of very thick fog lifting in the morning. Nimbostratus clouds are dark gray clouds that produce falling rain or snow.

November 2017

Vertical Clouds Cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds are both known as vertical clouds. Cumulus clouds are also called fair weather clouds and look like floating cotton. They have very flat bases and are not very tall clouds. When cumulus clouds are first formed from droplets, they have very distinct edges, but as they move through the sky, air causes the edges to appear more ragged and broken apart. Cumulonimbus clouds can take up several miles across the sky and can reach elevations of 39,000 feet or higher because of very strong updrafts in the atmosphere. Low level cumulonimbus clouds are made up of water droplets, but at higher elevations, they consist of ice crystals. Cumulonimbus clouds are the type of clouds that bring lightning, thunder, violent tornadoes and other intense weather situations.

World Television Day 21 November In recognition of the increasing impact television has on decisionmaking by bringing world attention to conflicts and threats to peace and security and its potential role in sharpening the focus on other major issues, including economic and social issues, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 November as World Television Day (through resolution 51/205 of 17 December 1996). World Television Day is not so much a celebration of the tool, but rather the philosophy which it represents. Television represents a symbol for communication and globalization in the contemporary world.

46

On 21 and 22 November 1996 the United Nations held the first World Television Forum, where leading media figures met under the auspices of the United Nations to discuss the growing significance of television in today's changing world and to consider how they might enhance their mutual cooperation. That is why the General Assembly decided to proclaim 21 November as World Television Day. This was done in recognition of the increasing impact television has on the process of decision-making. Television was thus acknowledged as a major tool in informing, channelling and affecting public opinion. Its impact and presence and its influence on world politics could not be denied.

World Television Day Facts TV stimulates the economy by providing countless avenues for jobs. Over 1.2 million people in the European Union alone are employed in the media sector In France, 63% of children between the age of 0 and 15 live in a household with 4 screens (TV, computer, tablet etc.). Television creates authority. When something is shown on TV it has a particular authority about it because you know that you and millions of other people are seeing it and that professionals have produced it. In Canada, nearly 95% of people aged 18-34 watch TV each month, which results in 12 and a half hours of weekly TV watching.

Television is a medium because anything well done is rare. - Fred Allen, American comedian and radio show host. 47

Hitchhikers in the Bathroom by Liana Mahoney

56

Imagine this. You step up to the sink, wet your toothbrush, and begin cleaning your pearly whites. Out of the corner of your eye, you see something moving on the wall. Suddenly, you realize you’re not alone in the bathroom. Your heart pounding, you turn toward the tiny intruder to get a better look. You’re horrified to see that it has eight legs, and a pair of oversized pincers on its front end. Is it some kind of miniature octopus, or a bizarre crab? Is it going to sting you? Actually, it’s a bug, and it’s no more harmful to you than a housefly. This tiny bathroom bug is called a pseudoscorpion(SOO-dohSCOR-peeuhn). But don’t be fooled by its name. It’s not really a scorpion; it’s just a relative. The pseudoscorpion is a kind of arachnid (uh-RAK-nid), which means it is closely related to spiders, scorpions, and mites. Like scorpions, pseudoscorpions have a segmented body and two enormous pincers. But pseudoscorpions lack the curved

stinger that all true scorpions have. Pseudoscorpions usually live outside in mulch, under tree bark, and in leaf litter. So how do they end up in the bathroom? They use those pincerlike claws to hitch a ride on other bugs, such as flies and beetles. When these insects come in, so do the pseudoscorpions - attached to their legs! These tiny arachnids prefer moist places. Since the bathroom tends to be humid after bathing and showering, it’s a likely place to find them. But they are easily overlooked. Most pseudoscorpions are only about two to eight millimeters long. Pseudoscorpions don’t bite or sting humans, and they can even be helpful. These bugs feed on common household pests, such as carpet beetle larvae, ants, mites, and small flies. Welcoming this hitchhiker into your home may mean there are fewer household pests to “bug” you! November 2017

2. Use the Venn diagram to show how pseudoscorpions and real scorpions are alike and how they're different.
