Number Knockout Learning Resources Number Knockout (ages 7+) was initially overlooked because of its (horrors!) educational aspect. But testers were soon drawn into this fast-paced math game. Players choose numbers on the keypad and use either addition or subtraction to yield the value displayed by the electronic dice. Once a digit is used, it's out of play; the winner is whoever has used the most numbers at the end of three rounds.

Crayola Glow Dome It's easy to use, but the Crayola Glow Dome (ages 6+) kept our testers in the dark — literally — all day long. Doodle on the dome with special glow markers. Then, turn out the lights and switch on the orb to see the drawings light up and spin around. What a cool night-light or showpiece! To try again, just wash the plastic dome.

In the summer blockbuster movie, Ant-Man, Paul Rudd plays Scott Lang who becomes the Ant-Man when he dons the special suit made by Dr. Hank Pym. Affecting many people around the world is an insect that could be considered a vampire in the insect world. The bed bug or Cimex lectularius, prefers to feed on human blood and typically lives inside beds. They are most active at night when people are asleep but they usually go unnoticed as their saliva injects anticoagulants and painkillers to avoid being felt as they feed. Yet their bites are very visible the next morning when people wake up to see reddish spots all over their body.

One Direction: Taking a Break

22

One Direction recently announced that they'll be taking a much needed year-long break in 2016, but some critics and fans suspect that the band is secretly calling it quits for good! 1D member Niall Halloran was the first to address the rumor on Twitter, saying: “Ok so lots of rumors going round. We are not splitting up, but we will be taking a well earned break at some point next year.” The break will apparently begin in March 2016 when the boys are done promoting their fifth album, and its possible they'll be pursuing solo projects - another rumor has it that Harry Styles already has a solo deal!

Vroom! 3-D Printed Race Car A California company has created the firstever race car made using 3-D printing technology. A sleek race car, nicknamed Blade, didn’t roll off a factory assembly line like most vehicles you see on the road. Instead, many of its key components, or parts, were created using a 3-D printer. That is a high-tech device that creates layers of material, like plastic or metal, one on top of the other, to produce solid objects—such as car parts. Divergent Microfactories, the California company that built Blade, has high hopes that 3-D printing can make the automobile industry much more environmentally friendly. Printed car parts require less energy to make and assemble than traditional ones, say Blade’s makers. Using less energy to manufacture the cars would cut down on pollution.

Bieber: Unlock the mystery! Fifth Harmony: I'm in Love with a Monster Fifth Harmony's new track "I'm in Love with a Monster" gets into the scary side of love for the Hotel Transylvania 2 soundtrack. The track has a fun retro-soul vibe that will have you twisting and turning in no time. The girls are on a roll after winning Choice Female Artist at the 2015 Teen Choice Awards August 17th, 2015. We can't wait to see what they do next!

Justin Bieber unleashed an exciting mystery onto fans the day of his new single release. The 21-year-old pop star finally made his fresh song What Do You Mean available to fans on Friday, the first solo tune he's released since 2013. And just to add even more excitement to Beliebers around the world, Justin has invited his fans to play a game so they can see the cover for his forthcoming album. 'yep. new album coming november 13th. pre-order on my store to unlock the album art (sic),' he wrote on Twitter, attaching a black and white image of a lock to the message. September 2015

A Dream Come True

by: Gill Sherry

F

or as long as she could remember, Badriya had dreamt of swimming with dolphins. She had seen them on the TV as a small child and had been mesmerized by the magical sea creatures playing in the water alongside human beings. Oh, how she wished she could be one of those lucky people! Her bedroom was full of dolphins. There were furry ones on her pillow, ornamental ones on her bedside table, even a dolphin mobile hanging from the ceiling which her mom thought was babyish but which Badriya insisted on keeping. She had dolphin books lined up on her bookshelves and a giant dolphin poster on the wall above her bed. If only she could have a real pet dolphin. She had a goldfish called Fin but it wasn’t quite the same. This year, her parents had booked a family holiday to Florida. She was so excited she was counting the days. Her brother, Jabeer, was also excited but he was only interested in seeing Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse. Badriya was a little too old to be interested in cartoon characters but she knew there were dolphins in Florida and was keeping her fingers crossed she would finally get to swim with them. On the first day of the much longed for vacation, her mom bought her a dolphin September 2015

shaped inflatable to use in the swimming pool. Badriya thanked her mom but secretly hoped she would be swimming with real life dolphins and not just a blow-up one! After days of roller-coaster rides, firework displays, stage shows and musical parades, Badriya believed her dream was about to come true. Her parents had bought tickets for them all to go on a ‘dolphin watch’ boat trip. They were all wearing yellow lifevests but Badriya was the only one wearing a swimsuit underneath. The tour guide was telling them to keep an eye open for the tell-tale fin of a dolphin. Badriya was straining her eyes to try and spot one but could see nothing other than water. After almost an hour, the boat turned around and headed back to shore. Badriya was so disappointed she had tears in her eyes. She didn’t want her mom and dad to see her crying so she pretended the sea water was splashing her face and wiped her cheeks with her back of her hand. Suddenly she heard Jabir shouting. She looked up to see him standing near the edge of the boat, pointing at the water. “I can see one!” he said. “Look Badriya, over there!” Badriya jumped from her seat so fast she almost fell down again but sure enough, there was a dolphin. Within seconds, another five dolphins had appeared and all six of them were now swimming alongside the boat. The tour guide slowed the boat right down until it stopped and they all watched as the dolphins played in the water. One even came right up to the boat to say hello! www.kidzine.net

Following the tour guide’s instructions Badriya climbed down the slippery steps from the boat and jumped into the water. She probably should have been scared but in fact, she’d never been so excited in her whole life! One particularly friendly dolphin nudged her with its nose and she stroked its smooth skin whilst her mom and dad took pictures. Before she knew what was happening, the dolphin had swum underneath her and was taking her for a ride on its back! She held on to its fin and enjoyed every minute as they swam together. Eventually, it was time for the dolphins to leave. Five of them were already swimming away when Badriya’s favourite, Dazzler, said goodbye with a dolphin kiss! She climbed back into the boat and waved and waved until the fins finally disappeared from sight. Badriya couldn’t remember ever being so happy. She’d had a wonderful holiday with her family; visited Disneyland and played on the beach. But best of all, she’d swam with dolphins; and she’d got the photos to prove it! She might take her mobile down from the ceiling when she got home. Mobiles were for babies and she wasn’t a baby she’d swam with Dazzler after all! www.kidzine.net

My Life in

Hi! My name is Ghalia Zainal and I used to live in Tokyo, Japan. I moved to Japan when I was two years old and lived there for six years. Now I am eight years old and I would like to tell you a little about my experience in Japan.

I moved with my family (Mama, Baba and my brother Yousef) when I was two years old. At first I thought this adventure was going to be the worst but then it turned out to be the best. I loved our home, my school and preschool. I made a lot of friends who I miss now but I am happy that we can keep in touch with each other.

My four best friends in elementary school were Tommy, Eiichiro, Isaac and Ema. We used to enjoy playing basketball during recess. We also enjoyed playing new games we learned during music class. In preschool, my best friends were Chikage and Anita and we are still best friends even though we moved schools and countries.

I had many friends and best friends. My friends were from different parts of the world. Some were Japanese; others were from the USA, Canada, Portugal, India and many other parts of the world.

One of my favorite things to do in Tokyo was going to Tokyo Disney Land and Tokyo Disney Sea. It was only 45 minutes away by car from our home and we used to go very often. Some of my favorite things to do in Disney were watching the parades. They had many special parades depending on the season and also the night parade, which they called Electrical Parade Dream Lights.

35

I started learning Japanese when I was in preschool, which I enjoyed very much. I did not like Japanese food very much but my family loves it! After school I also practiced playing Taiko, which is drumming on traditional Japanese drums. The hardest part about living in Japan was missing my family; my grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. They used to visit often which made it easier and we also visited Kuwait.

Thank you for reading about my adventure and I hope to tell you more next time! www.kidzine.net

The Marvels

Waiting

The Shrunken Head

by Brian Selznick

by Kevin Henkes

by Lauren Oliver

Caldecott Award winner and bookmaking trailblazer Brian Selznick once again plays with the form he invented and takes readers on a voyage!

What are you waiting for? An owl, a puppy, a bear, a rabbit, and a pig—all toys arranged on a child's windowsill—wait for marvelous things to happen in this irresistible picture book by the New York Times–bestselling and Caldecott Medalist Kevin Henkes.

Blessed with extraordinary abilities, orphans Philippa, Sam, and Thomas have grown up happily in Dumfrey’s Dime Museum of Freaks, Oddities, and Wonders. But when a fourth child, Max, a knifethrower, joins the group, it sets off an unforgettable chain of events. When the museum’s Amazonian shrunken head is stolen, the four are determined to get it back. But their search leads them to a series of murders and an explosive secret about their pasts.

Two seemingly unrelated stories-one in words, the other in pictures-come together. The illustrated story begins in 1766 with Billy Marvel, the lone survivor of a shipwreck, and charts the adventures of his family of actors over five generations. The prose story opens in 1990 and follows Joseph, who has run away from school to an estranged uncle's puzzling house in London, where he, along with the reader, must piece together many mysteries.

Five friends sit happily on a windowsill, waiting for something amazing to happen. The owl is waiting for the moon. The pig is waiting for the rain. The bear is waiting for the wind. The puppy is waiting for the snow. And the rabbit is just looking out the window because he likes to wait!

Hanabi

Hi! My name is Yousef Zainal. I am six years old. I previously lived in Tokyo, Japan. Today I want to tell you about one of my favorite things to do during the summer in Tokyo. I used to enjoy going to see the fireworks, which are called ‘Hanabi’. The best fireworks are in August during the summer. In Japan, Sage and Joseph were my friends and we would go to their house to watch the beautiful fireworks light the sky. The show was usually very long and it was always very beautiful. Sometimes we would go to a big aquarium and park in Yokohama, which is another city in Japan. A lot of people wear a Yukata during the summer and sit in the park to enjoy the fireworks. A Yukata is a simple kimono made out of cotton. My sister and I used to love wearing a Yukata. It is colorful and comfortable to wear during the hot Japanese summer. When we watched the Hanabi in the park, there were usually many food stalls selling delicious Japanese food like yaki-soba, okonomiyaki, takoyaki and my favorite dessert, kakigori. Kakigori is shaved ice and you get to choose your favorite syrup to pour on the top. The park would be crowded with people coming to watch the Hanabi. Everyone would bring a picnic mat to sit on with their friends and family to enjoy the show.

43

Hanabi was one of my favorite events during the summer in Japan. There are many other things I enjoyed but I will leave that for more stories next time.

Vitamin D The Sunshine Vitamin Vitamin D helps ensure the body absorbs and retains calcium and phosphorus, both critical for developing and building bone. It is known as the sunshine vitamin because our skin can produce vitamin D from the sun’s ultra violet light (UVB).

44

September 2015

Why Don't We Get Enough Vitamin D? Less exposure to UV rays. Many kids spend more and more time on computers and game consoles and are not going outdoors as much as required. Dark skin. The melanin (the pigment that gives skin its color) in darker skin protects against sun damage, but it can also block the sun needed to produce vitamin D. Certain health conditions. Some health conditions affect how well the body absorbs nutrients, including vitamin D. Because vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that gets stored in the body's fat cells, obesity increases a person's risk of vitamin D deficiency.

Lower consumption of D-rich foods. Eating foods rich in vitamin D-rich is the best way to get enough vitamin D. But many of the best foods like fatty fish and oil - are not the most popular. These days, most milk is ‘fortified’ with added vitamin D.

How Much Vitamin D Do We Need? The Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommends that teens get 600 IU (international units) of vitamin D per day.

Boushahri_clinic

l Infants (less than one year old) need 400 IU a day. l Children and adolescents need 400-600 IU a day. l Adults need 400-600 IU a day (adults aged over 70 years need 400-800 IU a day).

46

September 2015

Getting More Vitamin D In Your Diet As with all vitamins, it's best to get our D through the foods we eat. The best sources of vitamin D are: l Fatty fish and fish oils, such as salmon, mackerel and cod liver oil. l Egg yolks. l Vitamin D-fortified milk and other dairy products.

Lots of other foods are fortified with vitamin D, including orange juice, soy milk, cereals and bread.

Vitamin D From Supplements It is sometimes difficult to get the required levels of Vitamin D from the sun or dietary sources. Another good source is supplementation. Ask an adult before taking any vitamin supplements and always read the label! www.kidzine.net

1. Sugar in your diet plays a major role in tooth decay. Just how much sugar does the average Canadian consume each year? a) 10-20 kilograms b) 21-40 kilograms c) >40 kilograms 2. Acid attack! A sugary snack between meals launches an acid attack on your tooth enamel. Can you guess how long that acid attack can last? a) 5 minutes b) 20 minutes c) 10 minutes 3. Floss is the boss. Fewer than 1/3rd of us floss our teeth regularly, and that's a shame. Dental floss reaches spots that your toothbrush can't. If you don't floss, can you guess how much of each tooth's surface you leave uncleaned a) 25% b) 45% c) 35% 4. Dont't rush the brush. Along with flossing and seeing the dentist for regular dental checkups, brushing your teeth is a major player in preventing dental problems. Nearly all of us do it, but few of us do it long enough. How long should you brush your teeth to do an effective job? a) one minute b) 5 minutes c) 2-3 minutes

5. Glum gums. Three out of every four Canadians can expect to someday develop gum disease. Do you know the warning signs? a) shiny, puffy gums that bleed when you brush and bad breath b) sore spots on the inside of your cheeks or on your tongue c) teeth that are discoloured or darkened d) all of the above 6. Louis Pasteur

The chemist and microbiologist who discovered vaccinations and pasteurization Louis Pasteur was born into a poor family on 27th December 1822 in Dole, France. He was an average student until, as a teenager, he was introduced to science. He excelled at this subject and later, in 1838, went to college to study to become a science teacher. He earned degrees in mathematics, physics and chemistry and became a chemistry professor at the University of Strasbourg. During his time at university, he met and fell in love with Marie Laurent, the daughter of the university’s rector. They married in 1849 and had five children. Unfortunately, three of the children died from typhoid fever and it was this that drove Louis to investigate diseases in order to find a cure.

60

In those days, people believed that bacteria just appeared out of nowhere so Louis ran experiments to see if this was true. These experiments proved that germs and bacteria were living things and that they didn’t just spontaneously appear. This was a major discovery and earned Louis the nickname of “Father of Germ Theory”. He went on to investigate how certain liquids were spoiled by microbes such as bacteria and molds. He found that heating up the liquids would kill most of the microbes and allow the beverages to last longer so they would be safer to drink. This process became known as pasteurization and is still used on many consumables such as milk, cheese and vinegar. As he learned more about bacteria, he began to think they may be the cause of disease in humans and when the French silk market was threatened by a silkworm disease, he decided to investigate. He discovered that the disease was caused by microbes and by eliminating the microbes from the silkworm farms he was able to end the disease and save the French silk business. As his work continued, he realised that by making a weak form of a disease, it could cause people to become immune to the stronger form of the disease. He named the weak form “vaccine” and the first ever vaccine given to a human was for rabies. He administered it to a nine year old boy named Joseph Meister in 1885. Prior to that, he worked on cattle with an anthrax vaccine. September 2015

It was his ideas on micro-organisms causing disease that eventually lead to the boiling of surgical instruments, helping to prevent infections and resulting in many people surviving surgery. Louis established the Pasteur Institute in 1887. Today, the Institute continues to fight against infectious diseases.

To this day, Louis Pasteur is known as one of the most important scientists in history. His discoveries helped save the lives of millions and millions of people. He died on 28th September 1895 from a stroke. He was a deeply religious Christian throughout his life and is buried in the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, France.

PART II

GAMING CLUB

Hi everyone. I’m back with another article of The Gaming Club. We left off after the 1980s and now move on to the 1990s where we start Mario Kart and other successful spin-offs. It was 1996 when the N64 console came out and a few months later when Super Mario 64 was launched. In the first 3D N64 game, Mario had a voice just like Yoshi, Luigi, Peach and Bowser. The success was above expectations and earned lots of money. Now we enter the 2000s which is when the best ones were introduced; starting with Mario Sunshine on the GameCube. It was a good game and competed against lots of other Nintendo games. Now we jump all the way to 2006 when they released New Super Mario Bros; the same as the ‘80s but improved. It was also released on the DS, 3DS and the Wii U. In 2007, Super Mario Galaxy was released on the Wii; part 2 following in 2010. Now we move on to Super Mario 3D World. Beating expectations, this game will blow your mind just like the classic of 1996, but with more variety of players and power ups. This game came out in 2013 and it’s pretty good! That’s it for today my friends. I will see you next month. Until then, bye.

QUICK SAND CHALLENGE To leave this mysterious island, you must walk across the beach and find the boat, but this beach has areas of quicksand! You must follow the path of past tense verbs to avoid the quicksand. Draw a path from one past tense verb to the next. You can go vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. Be careful! Many past tense verbs are spelled just like present tense with “ed” on the end, but some have special spellings. The past tense of “walk” is “walked”, but the past tense of “catch” is NOT “catched”. It’s “caught”.

start 85

Is quicksand real? Yes! Quicksand can be found near beaches, ponds, and marshes. It is usually a combination of sand, clay, and salt water. Unlike in books and movies, however, a person could not sink all the way into quicksand. A person would only sink about waistdeep. www.kidzine.net

Hello my amazing kids, our future stars…….. This month I picked up a very interesting quote about winning and failing in life. Most of us don’t like to fail and like to always win, but still we often have to fail in order to win. The good thing is that failing can sometimes be considered as winning. Shocked? Yes it can! Let’s read the quote and see how…

“Winning doesn’t always mean being first; winning means you’re doing better than what you have done before!”

86

We all know that being number one is good, but what makes it even better is the effort we put into anything we do in life. No-one actually fails unless they don’t learn something new from their failure. In life you will not always win. Sometimes you lose, sometimes you win. What matters is what you have learned from your failures. Learning and being better than you have ever been is what really matters. Believe in yourself, challenge yourself and always be proud of who you are. Do these things and you will always be a winner. Kids often feel upset or sad when they fail or when they’re not number one in a game, a match, an exam or anything. My son is one of those kids. I always tell him that winning is the best feeling ever and we all want to get to that number one spot; but failing is a win as well! How? Sometimes we need to fail so we can stand up and try again. Real winners are those who learn new things every time they do something; they challenge themselves and gain experience from their failures so they win next time. Ultimately, we are all winners as long as we are trying hard! So please don’t feel down if you don’t get to number one. Instead, be positive and challenge yourself to win next time. Be proud of who you are…. I am proud of you! So too are your parents, family, teachers and friends!

by: Jim West Math Giants is a multi-column series highlighting the biggest mathematicians of all time.

88

“The Greatest of All Time” Ask any mathematician today who is the greatest mathematician of all time and Archimedes will usually be among the first choices. Known by some as ‘the father of pre-calculus’ and to others as simply ‘the greatest’, no one can deny that his works and inventions have contributed greatly to the world. Archimedes was born in 287 BC in Syracuse, Greece (present day Sicily). Archimedes invented many useful things such as the endless screw for raising water from a lower area to higher one. He also built many devices for the protection of cities from the Romans. Devices such as the Claw of Archimedes and the Heat Ray made Roman Ship Captains fearful of approaching Greek cities. The claw would grab the ships and tear them apart, while the heat ray would set their sails on fire. Archimedes employed his method of exhaustion to help him approximate the area inside of a circle or better known as Pi. The value of Pi has eluded scholars and mathematicians for ages. The most popular story about Archimedes is how he came to know the density of a crown that had been made for King Hiero II. The crown was supposed to be made with pure gold, but the king suspected the goldsmith was dishonest and had used silver instead. Archimedes was brought in to determine, without damaging the crown, if it was indeed made of pure gold. He was at first perplexed how he would be able to measure the density due to the irregular shape of the crown. Then that night he stepped into a tub for his bath and noticed how the water rose as he stepped in. He realized he could use this as a way to measure the density of the crown. He was so excited at this discovery that he leapt from the tub and ran through the palace like a mad man screaming “Eureka!” (Latin for I have found it). Perhaps the next time you step into a tub for a bath, you will think like the greatest mathematician of all time did. Eureka! September 2015

Dear Kids, This month we will focus on identifying a Focal Point, or point of interest, to shoot. The Focal Point is simply the subject we wish to be the main part of our photo. Let us explore more.

Find a Point of Interest

Interesting photographs have interesting things in them – they need a visual point of interest (a focal point). You should always identify a point of interest before hitting the shutter. Once you have identified the point of interest you can then think about how to highlight it by positioning yourself and using the zoom etc.

6 Techniques to Enhance the Focal Point in an Image

A focal point can be virtually anything ranging from a person, to a building, to a mountain, to a flower etc. Obviously the more interesting the focal point, the better – but there are other things you can do to enhance its power including, but certainly not limited to, the following: 90

Position – Place it in a prominent position. Size – Making your focal point large is not the only way to make it prominent – but it can definitely help.

Focus – Learn to use Depth of Field to blur out other aspects in front or behind your focal point.

Shape – Similarly, contrasting shapes and textures can make a subject stand out – especially patterns that are repeated around a subject.

Color – Using contrasting colors can also be a way of setting your point of interest apart from its surroundings.

Keep in mind that a combination of the above elements can work well together. Lastly, don’t confuse the viewer with too many competing focal points which might overwhelm the main focal point. Secondary points of interest can be helpful to lead the eye but too many strong ones will just clutter and confuse. September 2015

“Summer Reading” might be the season’s keywords for our educational system, but why not summer math or science while we’re at it? Khan Academy, a non-profit online portal committed to feeding people’s insatiable hunger for knowledge, offers courses in almost any subject you can imagine, helping people pass tests, improve their comprehension, or even just become better rounded.

Before the school year begins, students will want to start by getting themselves organized. Keep courses, grades, to-dos, and other information at your fingertips with iHomework. The universal app is integrated with Questria (www.questria. com), which provides you with a wealth of material for all of your researching needs. The app also allows you to sync information across all of your iDevices and your Mac. The app needs a bit of updating when it comes to iCloud support, but if you are still running iOS 6, you will be able to use this function.

Flashcards are a staple of studying. This app takes the pain out of making them by serving them up on a touchscreen. But more than a mere paper replacement, Brainscape tailors its timing to users’ learning needs. Though the app is free, you can purchase pre-made sets of flashcards to help learn things like foreign language vocabulary or world geography.

Learning a second (or third, or…) language can be a challenge, especially if you take the summer off and forget all your new words. DuoLingo is an addictive way to keep learning because it turns lessons into games packed full of listening, speaking, and translating. With hot streaks being tallied up and hearts measuring how close you’re getting to “game over,” it can be as thrilling as a racer or as confounding as a role playing game. Either way, DuoLingo is as fun as any mobile game going, with bonus points for teaching people everything from Esperanto to Ukranian.

Milan, situated in the northern Lombardy region, is the second largest city in Italy with a population of around 1.3 million people.

The distance from Kuwait to Milan is 3,827 kilometers or 2,377 miles. It takes a minimum of 7 hours and 30 minutes to fly from one city to the other but you cannot fly direct.

96

Before you travel to Milan, make sure you have exchanged your Dinars for Euros.

You will land at Milan-Malpensa airport, 40 kilometers or 25 miles, north-west of Milan. The airport has two passenger terminals and two runways although a third runway is scheduled for completion in 2017. Did you know that almost 60,000 people died between 1629 and 1630 when the great plague of Milan hit the city?

Italy has a typical Mediterranean climate; Alpine in the far north and hot and dry in the south. Winter in Milan is usually mild but foggy. Summer can be very humid with brief thunderstorms.

The prime language spoken in Milan is Italian but you may also hear English, French, Chinese and Dutch. September 2015

TRAVEL S DIARIE

Pinacoteca di Brera is the main public gallery for paintings in Milan. The gallery is home to many masterpieces and was established in 1776.

Residents of Milan are known as ‘Milanese’.

When in Milan, you are likely to use the metro system – the longest metro system in Italy. 1.15 million people ride the system every day! The network opened in 1964 and has 110 stations and four lines. The flag of Italy is often referred to as ‘il Tricolore’ as it features three equally sized vertical bands of green, white and red. The green is always on the hoist side. Some believe the green represents Italy’s plains and hills; the white represents the snowcapped Alps; and the red represents blood spilt in the Wars of Italian Independence. Others argue that green symbolizes hope; white is faith; and red is charity.

Milan also operates a traditional tram service; a novel alternative to taking a bus or a taxi!

Milan is also home to Europe’s largest opera house. The ‘Teatro alla Scala’ can seat close to two thousand people and was official opened on 3rd August 1778. The city’s previous theatre, Teatro Regio Ducale, was destroyed by fire in 1776.

98

The city of Milan is dominated by the Duomo di Milano, one of the largest cathedrals in the world. The Gothic cathedral took nearly six centuries to complete! It was opened to the public in 1965. In 1762, the Madonnina spire was erected. The spire boasts the famous Madonnina statue. The people of Milan consider it a fair-weather day if the statue is visible from a distance as it is often covered by mist. Underneath the cathedral, you’ll find a maze of underground galleries! One of the world's oldest car racing circuits, Autodromo Nazionale Monza, is located near the city of Milan. The Italian Grand Prix is held here with 137,000 spectators. The circuit was opened in 1922.

Castello Sforzesco is one of the largest citadels in Europe and one of the most important monuments in Milan’s history. Construction began in 1368 and it is now home to a number of museums and art collections. September 2015

Santa Maria delle Grazie is one of the most popular churches in Milan from an architectural point of view. It comprises both renaissance and gothic styles. You will find the world famous mural of ‘The Last Supper’ here, by Leonardo da Vinci.

99

Two of the world’s best soccer teams are based in Milan. F.C. Internazionale Milano (Inter Milan) and A.C. Milan both play their football at the famous Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, otherwise known as the San Siro.

Milan has a strong Provincial style cuisine. Risotto is the major dish of the city as opposed to pasta in other Italian cities. Try their risotto made with Gorgonzola cheese, pears and liquorish. You should also try Panettone, Italy's sweet bread loaf. This was invented in Milan!

Milan is one of the big four so-called ‘fashion capitals’, the others being New York, Paris and London. The city is home to the headquarters of many high fashion brands such as Versace, Gucci, Dolce and Gabbana, Prada and Armani.

EATING DISORDERS – THE SIGNS Despite the increased awareness of eating disorders, the topic is still one of major concern. Society is quick to blame the media and its persistent promotion of stick-thin models and movie stars but does the answer lie closer to home? It’s easy to criticise the fashion industry for the constant stream of size zero models seen in magazines and on bill-boards but throwaway comments from friends or family can have just as much of a negative effect. We are surrounded by what society believes is the perfect body. We see it every day in movies, music videos, magazines and on the TV and internet. Admittedly, children may look at it and associate it with wealth, success and happiness

but it’s not necessarily those images that cause kids to change their eating habits. The chances are it will be a comment from one of their friends or even a member of their own family that triggers the self-doubt and leads to dietary issues. It doesn’t necessarily need to be a direct comment regarding their weight or their image; it could be an overheard conversation about someone else’s size or look. It is important to be aware of what we say and how we say it. Kids can be particularly sensitive when it comes to their appearance. Even simple things like acne or wearing glasses or braces can result in a lack of confidence and feelings of insecurity. And don’t be fooled into thinking September 2015

that eating disorders only affect girls; boys are just as susceptible. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to lose a little weight. Excess weight can lead to a variety of health problems so the desire to be slim is not necessarily a bad thing. Teaching our kids about health and fitness is important for their wellbeing but it’s vital to focus on exercise and healthy eating rather than just weight. Dieting can sometimes get out of control and peer pressure can cause a tiny seed of doubt to grow to alarming heights. The two most common eating disorders are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Anorexia is very much a psychological problem. People suffering from anorexia see themselves as fat even when they are very thin. They are paranoid about gaining weight and will often starve themselves or vomit after they eat. The longer they suffer from anorexia, the more likely they are to die from it so recognising the symptoms is vital. These include: lDrastic loss of weight lObsession with calorie counting lRepeatedly weighing themselves lExercising too much lComplaints of feeling fat lOften feeling cold lExcuses for skipping meals lWithdrawal from social activities which involve eating lOften saying they are not hungry or have already eaten Rather than starving themselves, bulimia sufferers will binge on huge amounts of food (often junk food and in secret) then vomit to remove it from their system. This is more difficult to identify than anorexia but is often triggered by a traumatic or stressful event like moving to a new country or a parents’ divorce. These are the most common symptoms to look out for: lVisits to the bathroom immediately after meals lUsing laxatives or diuretics lWithdrawing from social activities lEating huge amounts of food without weight gain

By the time they start to look ‘too thin’ their body has already suffered damage. For girls, this may affect her ability to bear children. Bones are deprived of critical bone mass and the heart gets smaller and weaker. Some will become anemic and often the immune system will suffer, leaving them vulnerable to infections. Believe it or not, dentists are often the first to notice signs of eating disorders. Repeated vomiting and nutritional deficiencies can damage teeth, sometimes even leading to the erosion of tooth enamel. With this in mind, regular visits to the dentist should be maintained. But it doesn’t take a health professional to notice worrying things like lank hair, yellow or dry skin, swollen joints and lethargy. There is no single cause when it comes to eating disorders although it is common in kids between 11 and 17 and often stems from academic pressures or physical changes. Sometimes it runs in the family, either through genetics or behaviour. Certain activities can also leave kids feeling insecure. Girls involved in cheerleading, dancing or gymnastics may be conscious of being watched and scrutinized and may develop diet issues in their pursuit of the perfect body. Boys are just as likely to succumb to peer pressure if they are left out of group activities or if they under-achieve in sports. Recognising the signs is the first step but getting them to talk about it and to accept they need help isn’t going to be easy. Eating disorders damage the mind as well as the body and convincing them to see a doctor, dietitian or therapist is sure to be a challenge. But they won’t get better by themselves so the right help and support is the only way to achieve the desired results. Family members should encourage them to get well gradually and set good examples with their own eating habits. They also need to help them build their confidence and learn to accept their natural body shape; our genes and culture often dictate certain characteristics that we have absolutely no control over. There is no ‘quick-fix’ as far as eating disorders are concerned. It will take time and patience for someone suffering from an eating disorder to re-establish a healthy relationship with food. They need to see their changing body shape as a good thing and recognise the benefits of eating regular, healthy meals. Of course, as with most health issues, prevention is better than cure and being mindful of our attitudes and behaviour in front of our kids is the most obvious place to start. www.kidzine.net
