When you’re not out and about having fun, you can rely on Kidzine to keep you entertained.

This month, we take you on a trip to the fascinating city of Athens – make sure you read all about this historic city and its wonderful landmarks. You can also learn lots of interesting things about that prickly little creature, the hedgehog.

What to do Cover the edges of one glass with white paper and the other glass with black paper.

Secure both pieces of paper with a rubber band.

Fill the glasses with the same amount of water in each.

Leave the glasses in the sun for a couple of hours.

When you return, measure the temperatures of the water in both glasses with your thermometer.

Result The glass of water with the black paper should be hotter than the other glass of water.

Why?: Because dark surfaces (such as the black paper) absorb more heat and lighter surfaces (such as the white paper) reflect more light.

Early detection of vision conditions is crucial Did you know that about 80 percent of what you learn in school is taught visually? That means if you have an uncorrected vision problem, it could severely affect your development.

1. Consistently sitting close to the TV or holding a book too close.

2. Frequent eye rubbing.

While it is a myth that sitting too close to the TV will ruin your eyes, this habit could be a sign of a vision problem.

If you cannot see televised images clearly or read from books without leaning in close, it could mean you are nearsighted.

Yes, children do often rub their eyes when they're tired or upset. But if you rub your eyes while trying to concentrate on something, or while being active, it could mean that you have a vision problem.

3. Losing place while reading or using a finger to guide eyes when reading.

4. Closing one eye to read or watch TV. Frequently closing one eye could indicate a refractive or binocular vision problem that interferes with the ability of the two eyes to work together comfortably as a team.

Closing one eye to read or concentrate on other desk or computer work could be a sign of a specific eye teaming problem called convergence insufficiency.

When we learn to read and are sounding out words, we often use our finger to track which word we are on. But eventually we should be able to focus and not lose their place.

If after a while you still use your finger, try reading aloud without pointing. If you have trouble, you may have a vision problem.

5. Sensitivity to light and/or excessive tearing.

Are your eyes particularly sensitive to indoor lighting, sunshine or camera flashes? Children with photophobia, or extreme sensitivity to light, can develop headaches and nausea.

And light sensitivity can be a symptom of several eye conditions.

Famous Blind and Sight Impaired People Remember that children should have an eye exam at 6 months, again at age 3 and then regular exams after starting school.

6. Receiving lower grades than usual.

If you are having a hard time seeing what your teacher writes on the board because of poor vision, you may not tell your parents about it. As a result, your grades can suffer.

If you are struggling in school, go for a complete eye exam — glasses or contacts could be the answer!

8. Squinting or tilting the head to see the class board better.

Teachers should be on the lookout for students who have to squint or tilt their heads to see the board. Until an eye exam can be performed, consider moving closer to the board for easier viewing.

Digital eye strain is common among children who are frequent users of computers or other digital devices.

Take a break every 20 minutes to look at something that is at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds while using a digital device. If the eye discomfort persists, see an eye doctor.

Louis Braille - (January 4, 1809 January 6, 1852) Louis Braille became blind after he accidentally stabbed himself in the eye with his father's awl. He later became an inventor and designed braille writing, which enables blind people to read through feeling a series of organized bumps representing letters. This concept was beneficial to all blind people from around the world and is commonly used even today. If it were not for Louis Braille's blindness he may not have invented this method of reading and no other blind person could have enjoyed a story or been able to comprehend important paperwork. www.kidzine.net

The Remarkable Rocket by: Oscar Wilde

What happens when a pompous rocket starts to cry? Develop your reading skills with this classic children's story by legendary writer Oscar Wilde about a boastful rocket and his firecracker friends. he King’s son was married, so there were general rejoicings. It was a magnificent ceremony, and the bride and bridegroom walked hand in hand under a canopy of purple velvet.

Then there was a State Banquet, and a Ball. The last item on the program was a grand display of fireworks, to be let off at midnight. At the end of the King’s garden a stand had been set up and the fireworks began to talk to each other.

“The world is certainly very beautiful,” cried a little Squib. “Just look at those yellow tulips.”

“The King’s garden is not the world,” said a big Roman Candle; “the world is an enormous place.”

“Any place you love is the world to you,” exclaimed the thoughtful Catherine Wheel.

Suddenly, a sharp, dry cough was heard, and they all looked round.

It came from a tall Rocket, who was tied to the end of a long stick. He always coughed before he made any observation, so as to attract attention. He spoke with a very slow, distinct voice.

“How fortunate it is for the King’s son,” he said, “that he is to be married on the day on which I am to be set off! It could not have turned out better for him.”

“Dear me!” said the little Squib, “I thought it was quite the other way, and that we were to be set off in the Prince’s honor.”

“I hate rudeness and bad manners of every kind, for I am extremely sensitive,” said the Rocket. “No one in the whole world is so sensitive as I am. Suppose, for instance, anything happened to me tonight, what a misfortune that would be for every one! The Prince and Princess married life would be spoiled. Really, when I begin to reflect on the importance of my position, I am almost moved to tears.”

“If you want to give pleasure to others,” cried the Roman Candle, “you had better keep yourself dry.

That is only common sense.”

“You cannot understand my friendship with the Prince.”

“Why, you don’t even know him,” growled the Roman Candle.

“I never said I knew him,” answered the Rocket.

“You had really better keep yourself dry,” said the Fire-balloon. “That is the important thing.”

“Very important for you, I have no doubt,” answered the Rocket, “but I shall weep if I choose;” and he actually burst into real tears,

which flowed down his stick like raindrops.

“Let the fireworks begin,” said the King. And the fireworks began a magnificent display.

Whizz! went the Catherine Wheel, as she spun round and round. Boom! went the Roman Candle.

Then the Squibs danced all over the place.

Every one was a great success except the Remarkable Rocket. He was so damp with crying that he could not go off at all.

The best thing in him was the gunpowder, and that was so wet with tears that it was of no use.

The next day the workmen came to put everything tidy. Then one of them caught sight of the Rocket.

“Look!” the workman cried, “what a bad rocket!” and he threw the Rocket over the wall into the ditch.

“Bad Rocket? Bad Rocket?” he said, as he whirled through the air; “impossible! Grand Rocket, that is what the man said. Bad and Grand sound very much the same, indeed they often are the same;” and he fell into the mud.

Interesting facts about the

Kuwait Towers It comprises of a lounge, reception hall & a Cafe which rises 123 metres above sea level and completes a revolution every 30 minutes.

Thus, it provides a complete Panorama view in just 30 minutes. The primary reason for the construction of the towers where to serve as water reservoirs. It holds a massive 9,000 cubic metres of water altogether.

The main tower among the three is 187 metres (613.5 ft) high and carries two spheres.

Although generally known as the Kuwait Towers but the structure is often referred to as Kuwait Tower in singular. The structure was selected by Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmed after ten different designs where presented to him.

According to Wiki, the Kuwait Towers comprises of, “Approximately 41,000 enameled steel discs cover the three spheres in eight shades of blue, green and gray, recalling the tiled domes of historic mosques. The discs are arranged in spiral patterns around the spheres.

According to the architect, the Kuwait Tower group refers to ideals of humanity and technology, symbolised by the globe and the rocket.

The largest sphere hosts five restaurants, lounge and conference rooms for meetings.

The second tower stores nearly a million gallons of water. The third tower has a similar mammoth capacity of a million gallons.

Milk and other calcium-rich foods are a must-have in kids' diets. After all, calcium is a key building block for strong, healthy bones. But most kids aged 9 to 18 don't get the recommended 1,300 milligrams of calcium per day.

What Calcium Does During childhood and adolescence, the body uses the mineral calcium to build strong bones — a process that's all but complete by the end of the teen years. Bone calcium begins to decrease in young adulthood and progressive loss of bone occurs as we age.

Teens, especially girls, whose diets don't provide the nutrients to build bones to their maximum potential are at greater risk of developing the bone disease osteoporosis, which increases the risk of fractures from weakened bones.

Younger kids and babies who don't get enough calcium and vitamin D (which aids in calcium absorption) are at increased risk for rickets. Rickets is a bone-softening disease that causes severe bowing of the legs, poor growth, and sometimes muscle pain and weakness.

When kids get enough calcium and physical activity during childhood and the teen years, they can start out their adult lives with the strongest bones possible. For optimal bone health, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommends: 1 to 3 years old — 700 milligrams of calcium daily 4 to 8 years old — 1,000 milligrams of calcium daily 9 to 18 years old — 1,300 milligrams of calcium daily

Calcium is necessary for life. The body uses bone as a place to store calcium, and therefore whenever the body needs calcium, it takes it from your bones.

To understand what happens to your bones, think of your bones as a money box for calcium.

What happens if you do not put very much money in your money box but you keep taking money out of it? Your savings get smaller and smaller.

The same is true with the calcium in your body. If you don’t get enough calcium in your diet every day, if you don’t put very much calcium in your bone bank or, if your body takes more calcium out of your bone bank than you put in, your bone bank will also decrease.

When you are 9-19 years old, eating foods with calcium will help you grow the strongest bones possible.

Venus The planets in the Solar System are given the names of Roman Gods or their attendants. Venus is called after the Roman Goddess of love and beauty.

Venus is covered by clouds of water vapour and sulphuric acid and the surface cannot be seen with an ordinary astronomy telescope.

Venus is the hottest planet in the Solar System, even hotter than Mercury, which is closer to the Sun. The temperature on the surface of Venus is about 860° Fahrenheit or 460° Celsius.

Compare this to a warm summer’s day in London, when the temperature might be 80° Fahrenheit or 26° Celsius.

It was supposed to be typical Saturday playing video games, but mom insisted I help her clean out the attic. It was cluttered with several boxes of memorabilia and keepsakes from my grandparents. When I took the last box down I noticed a large folded piece of paper stuck to the bottom of the last box. I opened the paper to find something I didn't expect - a map of my neighborhood with an 'X' marked upon it. Could this be some sort of treasure...

The Xylophone

The Xylophone is a member of the percussion family. Unlike most percussion instruments, it produces a pitch when struck.

With a name that means ‘the hitting of one body against another’, instruments in the percussion family are played by being struck, shaken, or scraped. In the orchestra, the percussion section provides a variety of rhythms, textures and tone colours.

Percussion instruments are classified as tuned or untuned. Tuned instruments play specific pitches or notes, just like the woodwind, brass and string instruments. Untuned instruments produce a sound with an indefinite pitch, like the sound of a hand knocking on a door.

The percussion instruments are an international family, with ancestors from the Middle East, Asia, Africa, the Americas and Europe representing musical styles from many different cultures.

First used in the orchestra just over a century ago, the xylophone is a tuned instrument made of hardwood bars in graduated lengths set horizontally on a metal frame. With the larger, lower-sounding bars on the left, the notes of the xylophone are laid out much like a piano keyboard.

Striking the bars with hard mallets produces a bright, sharp sound. The xylophone was originally modelled after an African instrument and its name is Greek, meaning ‘wood sound’.

How It's Made Xylophone bars are made from rosewood or, more commonly, Kelon which is a very durable fiberglass. After the material is selected, the bars are cut and shaped in various lengths. Longer bars play low notes while the shorter bars play high notes. A cord is strung through holes in both ends of each bar to hold them in place and to allow them to vibrate freely. Resonator tubes are then fabricated and placed below each bar to amplify the sound. Concert xylophones typically have 42-48 bars that are arranged like a piano keyboard.

The Percussion Family The xylophone is a member of the percussion family. The percussion family includes the timpani, snare drum, bass drum, xylophone, glockenspiel, chimes, gong, cymbals and many smaller percussion instruments.

Fun Fact lThe sounds of Fred Flintstone's twinkling toes at the bowling alley aren't made by his toes, they're made by a xylophone! lOften confused with its cousin the marimba, the xylophone has thick, hardwood bars and elicits much sharper, shorter notes, so the two instruments are often used together for a more varied tone. lAlthough the xylophone is often identified by its piano-esque appearance, this layout wasn’t established until the 20th century. In Eastern Europe in the 16th century, xylophone bars were laid out on straw in four rows (instead of today’s two rows), and this practice continued for over 300 years. lIn Senegal, xylophones have been used as part of initiation ceremonies, played by young girls and boys. Johannes Gutenberg Inventor of The Printing Press

Johannes Gutenberg was born in Mainz, Germany around the year 1398. He was the son of a Goldsmith.

Not a whole lot more is known about his childhood. It appears he moved a few times around Germany, but that's about all that is known for sure.

Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press. While this may not sound like a big deal at first, the printing press is often considered as the most important invention in modern times. Think about how important information is today. Without books and computers you wouldn't be able to learn, to pass on information, or to share scientific discoveries. Prior to Gutenberg inventing the printing press, making a book was a laborious process. It wasn't hard to write a letter to one person by hand, but to create thousands of books for many people to read was nearly impossible.

Without the printing press we wouldn't have had the Scientific Revolution or the Renaissance. Our world would be very different.

Gutenberg took some existing technologies and some of his own inventions to come up with the printing press in the year 1450. One key idea he came up with was moveable type. Rather than use wooden blocks to press ink onto paper, Gutenberg used moveable metal pieces to quickly create pages. He made innovations all the way through the printing process enabling pages to be printed much more rapidly. His presses could print 1000's of pages per day; the old

method could only manage 40-50. This was a dramatic improvement and allowed books to be acquired by the middle class and spread knowledge and education like never before. The invention of the printing press spread rapidly throughout Europe and soon thousands of books were being printed on printing presses.

It's thought that the first printed item from the press was a German poem. Other prints included Latin Grammars and indulgences for the Catholic Church. Gutenberg's real fame came from producing the Gutenberg Bible. It was the first time a Bible was mass produced and available for anyone outside of the church. Bibles were rare and could take up to a year for a Priest to transcribe. Gutenberg printed around 200 of these in a relatively short time. There only around 21complete Gutenberg Bibles in existence today; one is thought to be worth around $30 million! The original would have sold for 30 florins.

Virgin Galactic is the world’s first commercial spaceline. On 20th January, the New English School hosted a Virgin Galactic question and answer session with two very special guests. Mr. Greenfield, science teacher at NES, set up a satellite link with Space Agent, Rose Kingscote and future astronaut, Julian Ranger. Students from the school were able to ask questions about future commercial space travel and receive expert replies from the Virgin Galactic representatives. The questions ranged from basic queries regarding food and drink to more technical enquiries about space junk and radiation.

Carol Fattouh: What are you looking forward to most when you travel into space?

Julian: Just being amongst the first thousand people to visit space is amazing. Also, I want to see the stars, as we can only see a small selection from Earth.

Omar Abdelwahab: When will the first flights take place?

Rose: Test flights will take place throughout the whole of 2016. By early 2018, Sir Richard Branson and his family should have visited space, followed by other customers.

Rose: 6 customers plus 2 pilots; plus 2 pilots in the landing vehicle.

Aniket Gupta: How long will it take to travel into space?

Julian: Two and a half hours. It takes longer to fly from the USA to the UK! We will have 20 minutes in space, including 5-7 minutes floating around in zero gravity!

Rania Al Hamoud: Will you have food or drink on the flight into space?

Rose: No. The main focus is enjoying the whole flight so we don’t want any distraction; and it’s a short flight so we figure they can hold on without any food or drink.

Melika Esmaeili: Do you think you could take pets into space?

Rose: You’d be surprised how many applications we get from dogs and cats, even a horse! There is a huge demand to take pets into space so maybe one day. www.kidzine.net

Carol Fattouh: How often will flights into space take place?

Rose: At first, once a month. But we’re not just building one spacecraft, we’re building a fleet of spacecraft. Our aim is to fly every day so we’ll start slowly and gradually build up.

Maryam Al Baz: Is there any concern regarding space ‘junk’ when you travel in space?

Julian: NASA has a program to monitor space junk and a lot of work is done to ensure we don’t get hit by any.

Hagar Saleh: Do you think that space will one day be a popular tourist destination?

Julian: Definitely, yes! There are only so many places to go on earth but space is infinite.

Bader Abul: Who or what inspired you to become an astronaut?

Julian: A character called Biggles! He was a character in the UK and a First World War pilot. The same author also wrote about space. And then seeing Neil Armstrong walking on the Moon – if you’re not inspired by that, it’s hard to be inspired by anything!

Mohamed Dora: How much does it cost to travel into space?

Rose: Currently $250,000 but in future and as we develop more, it should drive the price down.

Maryam Ayub: Will you be able to step outside the spacecraft?

Rose: Currently no but potentially it’s definitely something we can work towards.

Jood Al Gharani: Do you think it will be hot or cold when you travel into space?

Julian: The spacecraft is pressurized so it will be just like being in an aircraft. It’s a controlled environment with a comfortable temperature. Outside might be very, very cold or it might actually be very, very hot. It depends where the sun is.

Sadiq Raziyan: How will you be protected from harmful radiation?

Julian: The skin of the spaceship protects us from radiation, but we’re not up there long enough for it to be an issue.

Of course, the question everyone wanted to ask was ‘How do you go to the toilet in space?’ Whilst Rose said she expected people to be able to hold on for the short two and a half hour flight, Julian confirmed that he was expecting to wear a nappy! It seems even the most futuristic adventurers rely on basic necessities!

It was certainly an interesting and informative session. The lower age limit for those wanting to venture into space is 18 so the students have a few years to wait before they’re able to buy a ticket and experience zero gravity. In the meantime, for those interested in a career in space travel, Rose recommended working towards a degree in Aeronautical or Structural Engineering.

Noether

“Woman of Mathematics”

Often described as ‘the most important woman in mathematics’, Emmy Noether made significant contributions to abstract algebra and theoretical physics. Her work on theoretical physics would help Albert Einstein on his theory of relativity. Einstein was a huge fan of Noether, as were many other mathematicians who held her work in high regard. Not bad for a girl born in Germany during a time when women were not treated as equals to men.

Being a woman mathematician was hard for Noether. She had worked for almost a decade without pay after she earned her degree, due to the fact that women typically did not hold academic positions.

Yet she did not give up on her quest to discover new theories in mathematics. Her greatest theory, the Noether Theory, united two conceptual pillars of physics; symmetry in nature and the universal laws of conservation. Many consider her theory just as important as Einstein’s theory of relativity. It was such a shame she had to publish ground breaking papers under a man’s name because of the time she lived.

Noether lived her life dedicated to math. She never married, nor had children. People say she always laughed and had fun with math teachings. Every photo you can find of her on-line shows her smiling.

Quite impressive given the circumstances she worked in during her whole career in mathematics. With the help of Einstein, she was able to work at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania where she finally felt deeply appreciated as she never had been in Germany. It is unfortunate that it didn’t last long for Noether as she died just 18 months later. The world had lost a great mathematician; one that didn’t care what name was on the paper as long as the truth of math was shown to the world.

FUN FACTS:

1) Noether had to lecture und er a man’s name and was often noted as an assistant.

2) Noether never used lesson plans for her classes. Instead, she focused on spontaneous discussions. These ground breaking discussions would later lead to the creation of textbooks.

3) Noether’s work in mathema tics is divided into three ‘epochs’. Quite imp ressive for someone many people know nothing about.

History of Fireworks Fireworks were invented in China in the 7th century. The story told is that a group of Chinese monks were trying to create a medicine that would give people immortality. Instead, they accidentally invented gunpowder, which is the explosive used in fireworks.

Gunpowder was eventually used for guns and bombs, but since its invention it has always been used for fireworks too. The Chinese would use the gunpowder as signal flares and for celebrations.

Over time people learned that if certain metals were mixed with the gunpowder brilliant colors could be made when it was ignited.

Many more advancements have happened that let fireworks create all sorts of shapes and sounds,but they still work in the same way today.

For a long time fireworks have been a big part of Fourth of July celebrations in the United States. This is partly because they symbolize the rockets and explosions that Francis Scott Key wrote about in his song “The Star Spangled Banner.�

Athens is home to two World Heritage Sites; the Acropolis of Athens and the medieval Daphni Monastery. The Acropolis is an ancient citadel which contains the remains of several ancient buildings. It is of great architectural and historic significance. It is situated on a high, rocky outcrop above the city. The Daphni is an 11th century Monastery with a broad, high dome which houses a beautifully preserved complex of mosaics. The monastery was badly damaged by the 1999 Athens earthquake and is still undergoing restoration.

At 908ft (300 meters) above sea level, Mount Lycabettus stands high above Athens. You can climb to the top where you will find the chapel of St. George and also a cafĂŠ.

The Theatre of Dionysus Eleuthereus is a major open-air theatre and one of the earliest preserved in Athens. This was originally used for festivals in honor of the god Dionysus and could seat 17,000 spectators. It can still accommodate 14,000 people today.

The later and better preserved Odeon of Herodes Atticus was used as a music venue with a capacity of 5,000. IT’S GOOD TO BE DIFFERENT Imagine how dull the world would be without variety. Imagine if we all wore the same clothes, liked the same things and behaved the same way; how boring would that be? Thankfully, we are all born to be different and despite our children often wanting to be the same as their friends, we should encourage them to develop their own personality, as well as their own hopes and dreams.

Too often, those children who are ‘different’ are singled out as being weird. But there’s nothing weird about wanting to play the violin instead of playing football. Similarly, there’s nothing strange about wanting to take photographs rather than visiting the cinema. The truth is, as parents, we should encourage our kids to follow a different path and do whatever makes them happy. If they show a desire to play a musical instrument, they should be applauded and offered the appropriate support. If they are keen to take up photography as a career, they should be encouraged and given every opportunity to practice and learn new techniques.

Unfortunately, due to the inevitable immature behaviour of their friends, they will more than likely be teased for their choices. This is why it’s so important to stand by them and make sure they don’t give up on their dreams. Remind them that it’s their so-called friends who are ‘strange’. Who wants to sit in a dark, cold cinema for two hours when you could be outside in the fresh air taking pictures of Kuwait’s nature or architecture? More often than not, it’s jealousy that leads to the teasing and they only make fun of someone’s choices because they don’t have the confidence to make choices of their own.
