View-Master Similar to the View-Masters of old, it still comes with reels. In this version, though, you simply put the reels on a table surface and look at it while the headset is strapped to your face. From there, it will activate an augmented reality system that will turn the reel into an interactive viewing destination (content will vary based on what reel you’re looking at), with various areas you can enter and explore as a 360-degree environment. The system will offer both static and animated virtual experiences, along with some interactivity (you can click on certain items in the virtual world, for instance).

‫تحريك علبة صودا بإستخدام الكهرباء اإلستاتيكية‬

ROLL A CAN WITH STATIC ELECTRICITY :‫ستحتاج إلى‬

What you need: An empty soda can

A blown-up balloon

A head of hair

‫علبة صودا فارغة‬

‫بالون منفوخ‬

‫شعر الرأس‬

1.Place the can on its side on a flat smooth surface like a table or a hard floor.

‫ضع العلبة على جانبها على سطح مستو وناعم مثل‬ .‫طاولة أو أرضية مستوية‬

2.Rub the blown-up balloon back and forth through your hair really fast.

‫افرك البالون المنفوخ ذهابا‬ ‫وإيابا بشعرك بسرعة جد ًا‬

14

3.Now the fun part – Hold the balloon close to the can without actually touching the can. The can will start to roll towards the balloon without you even touching it!

‫ أمسك البالون بالقرب‬- ‫الجزء الممتع اآلن‬ ‫ ستبدأ العلبة‬.‫من العلبة دون لمس العلبة‬ .‫باللف بإتجاه البالون حتى من دون لمسها‬

How does is work? When you rub the balloon through your hair, invisible electrons (with a negative charge) build up on the surface of the balloon. This is called static electricity, which means “non-moving electricity”. The electrons have the power to pull very light objects (with a positive charge) toward them – like the soda can.

Try This Too: While you have the balloon out, tear up part of a tissue into tiny pieces about 1/4 inch big (0.5 cm). Rub the balloon in your hair again and bring it close to the tissue pieces. They will be attracted to the balloon and then jump away.

Celebrity Kids Who Wear Glasses Glasses are no longer something that kids are ashamed to wear. This is due partly to the fact that there are tons of fashionable frames and styles available. There are a lot of celebrity kids who wear their glasses with pride and or not afraid to be spotted out and about with their glasses.

Violet Affleck – The daughter of celebrity power couple Ben Affleck

and Jennifer Garner, Violet is not the least bit shy about wearing her glasses. She often wears colorful frames as a way of showing off her fun personality. While bright and colorful, her glasses are often very casual and otherwise not very flashy, much like the rest of her classic style.

Monroe Cannon – The adorable daughter of

Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey, Monroe has been wearing glasses for a few years. However, her cute glasses never outshine her adorable personality. 21

Romeo Beckham – Son of David and Victoria

Beckham, Romeo is often photographed while wearing glasses, even wire rimmed frames when he is not on the red carpet.

Trey Smith and Jaden Pinkett-Smith – Will Smith's kids are often photographed wearing frames. Although it’s not clear whether they are for style or function, they are definitely making a bold statement and both look sharp. Jaden seems to favor rectangular frames, while Trey likes to wear square frames.

Kingston Rossdale – The young son of Gavin Rossdale and Gwen Stefani, Kingston is often photographed wearing glasses. He usually sports something non-traditional, such as a bowline style or rectangular frames. No matter what he wears, he and his outfits always stand out in the crowd. All of these celebrity kids (and more!) look fashionable in their glasses, proving that glasses can be a cool and trendy accessory instead of merely a necessity. www.kidzine.net

Match Them Up!

WHERE ARE THE LETTERS? Sometimes children need to have their eyes checked, and some may even get glasses! There is a special doctor who helps children see what glasses they need. Look at the chart and write all of the letters you see. Then circle the letters around the eye doctor’s office.

Ruwan didn’t like math. He wasn’t very good at sums and it always took him a long time to figure out the answers. Sometimes his answers were wrong and the other boys laughed at him; especially Sami. Sami laughed at him all of the time, not just in math class. He called him names and threw things at him like sticks and sweet papers. Ruwan didn’t know why Sami didn’t like him. He had only ever been nice to Sami. He suspected it was because his family didn’t have much money and that he came from a different country. But Ruwan had been taught by his parents that everybody was the same, regardless of where they came from, what color their skin was or how much money they had. One day, when Ruwan was walking home from school, Sami tapped him

on the shoulder. “Hello little poor boy” he said. “Where are you going?” “I’m g-g-going home” he stammered, suddenly feeling nervous. “Home? To that horrible little shack? No wonder you smell” laughed

The next day at school, Ruwan noticed Sami getting out of his father’s car. “Hey, Ruwan!” he shouted. “What are you doing after school today? Do you want to come to my house for tea?” Ruwan was amazed at this unexpected offer. He saw Sami’s father smiling from the front seat of the car and smiled back. “Yes please Sami” he said, “I’d like that very much”.

Later that evening, when he told his mother what had happened, she gave him a big hug. “I’m very proud of you Ruwan. You returned the phone to Sami even though he was nasty to you. That shows what a kind, thoughtful person you are”. Ruwan smiled and he was glad he had done July 2015

GAMING CLUB

Hey guys, it’s me Max. I’m returning to the gaming club and today we are going to talk about FIFA Ultimate Team also known as FUT which is one of the newest video game releases.

50

FIFA Ultimate team (FUT), which was introduced in FIFA 13, returns in FIFA 14 and 15. The game mode allows players to build their own team from real world players and staff, which they can then use to compete in both online and offline tournaments and divisions. FUT also allows for a ‘single online match’, where a player can play a single match against another player which does not contribute to tournaments or seasons. As players play both online and offline matches, they earn coins to spend on improving their team. Each game earns a certain amount of coins depending on whether they win, lose or draw. Players and other items are acquired in the form of cards, which are obtained through buying packs, or buying directly from other players through the transfer option. There are three different tiers of cards (bronze, silver and gold), indicating the quality of the players. Packs also come in bronze, silver and gold. There are also Special Packs, which feature rare cards. Packs can be purchased with coins, which are earned through playing FUT matches, or with FIFA points, which must be purchased with real world money. Players can also edit kit numbers and player roles for set pieces and can change the style of play of any given player. FUT seasons have been extended from the five divisions available in FIFA 13, to ten in FIFA 14 and 15. The Xbox One and Xbox 360 versions of FIFA 14 feature exclusive FUT content called ‘Legends’. When purchasing Gold Packs, players can randomly acquire famous players from the past, such as Ruud Gullit, Dennis Bergkamp, Pelé, Patrick Vieira, Gary Lineker and Freddie Ljungberg. July 2015

Until next time, enjoy learning and playing old and new video consoles and games.

Dear Kids, I hope you are enjoying your photography lessons. Our lesson this month will be about holding the camera straight. The obvious problem with many of the first images is that they are rarely lined up straight. While shots that are not straight can be quite effective (they can be playful or give a more ‘candid’ feel to them), it is good to learn to check the framing of the shot before hitting the shutter. One of the first tips is to watch the horizon when framing a photograph. You should look at the horizon and make sure it is level. This is an elementary mistake that many photographers make. It has the ability to spoil otherwise brilliant shots.

How to Get Your Horizons Straight

52

The simplest way to get your horizon straight is to line it up with the top or bottom of your viewfinder. Keep in mind that the edges of your frame in your viewfinder or LCD screen will be the edges of the actual image and will be the reference point for the eventual viewers of your shots to work out whether your shot is straight or not. Many cameras also have markers in their viewfinder (often a rectangle or set of focusing spots). These can often be used to help line up your horizons mid frame.

Isaac Newton

The Man Who Laid the Foundations of Modern Science Isaac Newton was born in Woolsthorpe, England on 4 January 1643. In those days, the calendar was different to what it is now and if you used that calendar, he was actually born on Christmas Day! He was apparently born too early and because of this his Mum said he could fit into a quart size mug, which is about the size of a liter. That’s pretty tiny don’t you think? His Dad was a rich farmer but he sadly died before this very clever young man was born. His Grandparents looked after him as his Mom married someone else and moved away to go and live with him. He didn’t like his step-dad at all and was very cross with his Mom for leaving him. Not very surprising! 58

He loved to draw and paint and he would cover the walls and ceilings of his bedroom with all sorts of colors. Would your parents like you drawing on your walls and ceiling? Don’t think so! Did you know that Isaac Newton was actually expelled from school when he was about 12 years old? Well he was and it was because he fought with one of the other students! Just after that, his step-dad died and his Mom took him out of school and wanted him to be a farmer. But it wasn’t meant to be as he hated farming. So, back he went to school again and ended up being the top student! No wonder he was such a brilliant man. He absolutely loved sundials and building model windmills. Now that’s cool. When he was 19, he went to Cambridge University in England. He couldn’t afford to pay for it, so he worked part-time as a valet. It was a bit like being a servant, looking after gentlemen’s clothes and what they looked like. Wow, he certainly wanted an education! Luckily for him, the university saw how talented he was and they granted him a scholarship - no more valeting for him then! Cambridge University had to close because of the Great Plague. As soon as this happened, off he went home on his merry way and did lots and lots of thinking! This was ok because he definitely liked to work on his own. This is where some of his most important work was done! July 2015

Quiz Interesting Facts • In 1705 he was lucky enough to be made a Knight by Queen Anne. • He died on 20 March 1727. He died in his sleep, nice and peacefully and was buried in Westminster Abbey in England. • Apparently after he died, they found mercury in his hair from all those crazy experiments he used to do. Loads of people thought this was why he acted a bit crazy in his later life, as mercury is poisonous. That could explain it! • How is this for weird? One of Isaac Newton’s teeth was sold in 1816 for £730. A posh and wealthy man bought it and had it set in a ring! Hmmm, that would be a bit weird having a ring with a tooth in it! • Sir Isaac Newton is still thought of as one of the most amazing and brilliant scientists of all time and will probably always be known as a brilliant mind!

1. Where was Isaac Newton born? 2. On what date was he born? 3. Who looked after him when he was young? 4. What happened in school when he was 12 years old? 5. Where did he go when he was 19? 6. Can you name two important discoveries he made? 7. What is Calculus? 8. What was his greatest passion in life? 9.What did they find in his hair when he died? 10. What is a weird fact about his teeth?

•He discovered what is called the Law of Universal Gravitation. Apparently this discovery came about when he saw an apple falling from a tree. This led him to the answer that “Whatever goes up must come down.” Eventually of course, this discovery allowed people to understand how the planets and the sun moved around. Guess what happened to the tree? Well the King’s School in Grantham, Lincolnshire apparently bought it and moved it to its own garden. Wonder how much they paid for it!

•He also discovered the Laws of Motion on which mechanics is based. The first law of motion he described as “An object in motion wants to stay in motion and an object at rest wants to stay at rest.” •Have you heard of Calculus? Well, this is the man who invented it. It is a part of math that works out changes in the rate of change, like the speeding up or slowing down of a moving vehicle which is used in engineering and science. •He invented the Reflecting Telescope where he used mirrors to reflect light and create images from that. They still use this in major telescopes today. www.kidzine.net

Dear friends: This month I am taking you the Chef’s Station event which started at the beginning of Ramadan at Shuwaikh Market. The purpose of the program was to develop culinary skills among young entrepreneurs and provide them with an opportunity to spend their time in a useful way. The event was supervised by professional chefs and the course lasted for 20 days. It was very popular locally and was thoroughly enjoyed by the participants. Every day, 12 young entrepreneurs took to the kitchen and a total of 240 participants were trained. The day I visited, I was lucky to meet chef Esraa who was there to teach that day. Budding chefs were able to practise their cooking skills and learn new ones too. Each session began with a talk by representatives from the fire department who came along to talk about the importance of fire safety in the kitchen. Those taking part were able to take home their tasty creations - yummy! I have heard that the event will continue after Eid and will update you once I will have more information. July 2015

You are amazing! Hello my super smart kids. Welcome to my quote page where I share with you an interesting quote and the lessons we learn from it.

This month’s Quote: “Today a reader, tomorrow a leader” 86

We all know how important reading is; it’s the essential source of knowledge. The more you read, the smarter you become. The smarter you become, the stronger you become to face the new world challenges. I have noticed that kids are not reading like I used to do when I was a kid. I know it’s quite hard for you to read with all the new technology that is tempting you, but I encourage you my lovely kids, to be stronger than these games and to set an hour out of the 24 hours you have every day, to read. An hour is nothing. Reading can take you everywhere you want to go without even moving from your chair; and think of all the amazing things you can learn! Try to read anything (magazines, science books, stories, newspaper articles, internet etc). Reading challenges your brain, enriches it with new information and awakens the dark spots in it. Remember reading is brain food. It can turn a normal kid into a genius - and you are a future genius! Please start reading today and every day!

Paris is the capital of France. It is situated on the River Seine and is the most heavily populated city in France. It takes 5 hours and 40 minutes to fly from Kuwait to Paris, a distance of 4378 kilometers. Paris has two international airports: The largest, ParisCharles de Gaulle and the smaller Paris-Orly.

96

Once there, you will probably use the Paris Metro, the underground rail system with 303 stations.

You will need to convert your Dinars to Euros before travelling to Paris. When eating in restaurants in Paris, do not be surprised to find ‘snails’ and ‘frogs legs’ on the menu! You may find their Crêpes more appetizing – a very thin pancake served with a variety of fillings. Or try a French stick with some French Camembert, Brie or Roquefort cheese.

The French national flag is known as the ‘French Tricolour’. It consists of three vertical bands of blue, white and red.

The language of France is French although most speak at least some English. July 2015

TRAVEL S DIARIE

The ‘Arc de Triomphe’ monument honors those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and the Napoleonic Wars. It stands 50 meters tall, 45 meters wide and 22 meters deep and is situated at the western end of the Champs-Élysées.

France has four seasons but generally, it is mild and moderately wet. Summertime in Paris can get very hot and winter may bring snow or frost.

Paris is often referred to as ‘The City of Light’ because of its leading role during the Age of Enlightenment and also because it was one of the first European cities to adopt gas street lighting. The most famous landmark in Paris is the Eiffel Tower. The iron lattice tower was first opened in March 1889. It is 301 meters high and is the most visited paid monument in the world. An average of 25,000 people ascend the tower every day. The flag of Australia is blue with the Union Jack in the top left quarter and a large, white seven-point ‘Commonwealth Star’ at the bottom left. Five further stars represent the Southern Cross constellation.

Paris is also sometimes called ‘The City of Love’ because it is believed, by many, to be the most romantic city in the world. The well known ‘love lock bridge’ can be found in Paris. Fastening a padlock (or love lock) on to the Pont des Arts then throwing the key into the River Seine has been a tourist tradition for many years. However, these are now being removed as the weight of the locks is too great. Close to one million locks are due to be removed from the bridge.

Bondi beach is located in Sydney and is one of the most visited tourist sites in Australia. The beach was added to the Australian National Heritage List in 2008. It is hugely popular with surfers.

Construction of the famous Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris began in 1163 and was completed in 1345 although many alterations and restorations have been carried out since. The cathedral has ten bells – each with its own name! The largest, Emmanuel, is always rung first, at least five seconds before the rest. July 2015

The Moulin Rouge cabaret house is situated in Paris and is easily identified by the red windmill on its roof. It is a major tourist attraction offering staged entertainment to visitors from around the world. Paris has hosted many big sporting events including the FIFA World Cup in 1938 and 1998. It also hosted the 1900 and 1924 Summer Olympics and the 2007 Rugby World Cup. Every year, Paris also hosts the French Open tennis tournament at Roland Garros.

Paris is also known for fashion and is often called the ‘International Capital of Style’. The famous ‘Paris Fashion Week’ is held there twice a year and is attended by many fashion designers and other well known celebrities. It is also home to three of the top five global fashion accessory houses - Louis Vuitton, Hermés and Cartier as well as the world’s largest cosmetic company, L’Oréal.

The best way to see Paris is to buy a ticket for the open-top bus tour or alternatively, take a sightseeing cruise along the River Seine.

Bullying – The Facts Bullying has existed for many years. It is an ongoing worldwide problem and one which attracts much publicity and debate. When I was at school, I was badly beaten by a girl one year older than me, resulting in a trip to the hospital and stitches in my head. Apparently, she was jealous of the lilac jumper I was wearing. I never wore it again. But there’s more to bullying than physical abuse. It’s bad enough having to suffer physical harm at the hands of a bully, but social or verbal bullying can be equally distressing. Social bullying includes things like deliberate exclusion or the spreading of malicious rumours. Verbal bullying is name calling, taunting or threats of harm. These

days, we also have cyber bullying to contend with. At least when I got home from school, I was free from the bullies and felt safe and protected in the comfort of my home. Kids today are not so lucky and are still targeted via text, email and social media. This may include posting embarrassing pictures or videos on-line or the setting up of false profiles. Whichever form of bullying it may be, the victim will feel isolated and upset. Unable to escape from the abuse, they will feel sick, depressed, frightened and in extreme cases, suicidal. Spotting these signs is vital if parents or teachers are to combat the bullying. Victims rarely report bullying for July 2015

fear of making things worse so getting them to talk about it is essential. Some kids may resort to self-harm and quite often, their school work will deteriorate. Other signs to look out for include: lTaking lLack

a different route to or from school

of concentration on homework

lMissing

money

lScratches

or bruises

lDamaged

or missing clothing

lLack

lEasily upset, lFeigning lUnable

Also, specific to cyber bullying: lUnwilling lUpset

lSpending

lMany

lDeactivating

their social media accounts

No-one is immune from bullying. There are many reasons why someone may be targeted or singled out by bullies. Quite often it is due to race, religion or their home circumstances; or it can be for something as simple as the colour of their hair or because they have a food allergy or a stutter. In Kuwait, it is often because a kid is overweight or because they struggle with a particular language. The most important message to portray is that asking for help is not a sign of weakness. And it’s not just the victims who should be encouraged to report bullying, it’s the witnesses too. Whilst they probably have no desire to get involved and may even fear for their own safety, reporting the bullying to an adult is the only way to stop it. Most bullying occurs during recess, lunchtime or on the way to or from school. It is also common in restrooms. Tips to help kids avoid bullies include: lStay in lWalk

groups of two or more

home with someone else or get a lift

lDo

not reply to abusive messages

lBlock

the culprits from your social media

lTry not to lKeep

fight back

a record of the abuse

Whilst it is tempting to fight back, this will only result in the victim getting into trouble and by resorting to physical violence, they are lowering themselves to the same moral level as the bully. In addition to recognising the signs of someone who is being bullied, it is important for parents and teachers to identify the bullies themselves. To do this, it helps to understand why they behave this way in the first place. Most will do it to copy or impress their friends in the belief it will make them more popular with the ‘in-crowd’. They use their power to intimidate others. This doesn’t necessarily mean they are bigger or stronger or even smarter than their victim; it just means they enjoy putting others down to try and make themselves look better. It is essential to discourage this behavior. School bullies are highly likely to engage in other anti-social activities such as shoplifting, vandalism and truancy. It is also proven that those who bully at school are 101 also likely to bully in the work place. So why do kids bully? I’m not talking about the inevitable falling out with friends. Let’s face it; we all did that at school. This is serious intimidation with the sole intention of causing harm and misery. It’s possible they are unhappy themselves and are taking out their frustrations on someone else. Maybe they have low self-esteem and are seeking attention. It is also possible they are being bullied themselves and despite knowing how it feels, cannot control the need to switch from victim to offender. Of course it could also be something as simple as jealousy (which brings me back to the lilac jumper). Sometimes, once they have started bullying, it’s difficult for them to stop. If they are doing it to impress others, they may fear loss of respect or fear they will be excluded from the ‘in-crowd’ if they stop. Whichever side they’re on, it takes courage to stop bullying. But stop it must. Some bullying continues for many years resulting in a miserable existence for the victim and diminished prospects for the offender. Let’s do everything we can to combat this problem. RECOGNISE IT - REPORT IT - STOP IT. www.kidzine.net
