Welcome to Hi Kids, What did you think of the storms earlier this month? It was a rare and fascinating treat to see so much rain in Kuwait! Thankfully it didn’t stop the Kidzine team from working hard on this November issue of your favourite magazine.

This month, we take you on a trip to St. Petersburg, the beautiful city in the North West of Russia which sees temperatures as low as -20 degrees C. Can you ever imagine being that cold?! We also teach you lots of interesting facts about bats – including why they hang upside down! And make sure you read about that curious fruit, the pomegranate.

Our ‘Great Mind’ this month is Marie Curie. Marie was a very talented physicist who discovered radioactivity and in doing so, saved many lives.

What's happening?

Placing your thumb over the hole at the top of the straw improves your ability to pierce the potato skin and push the straw deep into the potato. The first time you tried the experiment you may have only pierced the potato a small amount, so why are you more successful on the second attempt?

Covering the top of the straw with your thumb traps the air inside, forcing it to compress as you stab the straw through the potato skin. This makes the straw strong enough to pierce the potato, unlike the first attempt where the air is pushed out of the straw.

Chris, The World's Woolliest Sheep Gets A Much Needed Haircut

Canberra's Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) received news of a woolly creature roaming around in the Mulligans Flat Nature Reserve on the outskirts of the city. When the officials arrived to investigate, they discovered a barely visible ram buried under a giant ball of beautiful merino wool.

It took five men to bring the errant animal to the rescue center. The poor sheep who was nicknamed "Chris" could barely walk under what appeared to be at least seven years of fleece growth. RSPCA officials knew that to ensure the animal's well-being, they should relieve him of his thick coat as soon as possible. That's because Chris could be harboring some serious infections under the wool and it could also be impeding his need to go to the bathroom.

The “Happy Birthday” song, one of the world’s best-known songs, is a very simple tune. But it has a very complicated background. The tricky tale of who owns the song begins back in in 1893, and is still unfolding. Under current laws, it’s illegal to perform the song in front of a large audience without paying for it. That’s because books, CDs and DVDs are all copyrighted. Copyright laws are designed to protect artists' words or images and the artists' right to earn a profit from them. It is illegal to use or make copies of copyrighted material without permission.

Though the “Happy Birthday” song is currently copyrighted, a new legal argument could change that. What do you think, should the happy-birthday song be free?

Disney Introduces The Cast of Zootopia

One Direction: Perfect Music Video One Direction surprised fans by dropping the video for "Perfect". Shot in the Intercontinental Hotel in New York City, the video follows Harry, Liam, Niall and Louis as they work on their craft, with that amazing skyline in the background.

This surprise video was released just hours after the boys had to cancel a show in Belfast due to Liam being sick.

Walt Disney Animation Studios revealed the roster of voice talent tapped to help bring a voice, snort and a roar to the animal residents of the modern-day mammal metropolis of Zootopia, which opens in theaters March 4th, 2016.

Animal Eyes Multiple Eyes Most animals that you’re familiar with have two eyes. But many animals have more. Some have several different kinds of eyes and others have lots of eyes that are all the same.

For example, spiders can have 8 eyes, lizards can have three and sea stars have one eye on each arm, which can mean having 40 eyes in some species!

Why these animals have so many eyes is still a mystery in many cases.

Even more mysterious are animals with different kinds of eyes.

A grasshopper has two compound eyes on the sides of its head, one eye in the middle of its forehead and two more behind its antennae. The grasshopper’s brain is getting information from all of these eyes and yet we don’t know what it sees exactly. Similarly, the horseshoe crab has two compound eyes on the sides of its shell, five small eyes on the top, two eyes in the middle of its body and an eye spot under its tail. Now that’s a lot of eyes!

Different kinds of eyes In the animal kingdom there are many kinds of eyes. The earthworm, for example, has hundreds of tiny light-sensitive cells called eye spots. These eye spots are around its head and tail, allowing the worm to sense light and dark.

An earthworm likes it best when it’s in a dark, cool place and its eye spots help to find its way.

Other animals with eye spots include leeches, caterpillars and jellyfish.

The housefly sees in a different way. Flies have compound eyes that are made up of hundreds of separate units called ommatidia (o-ma-TIdi-a). Light enters these units and is picked up by light-sensitive cells. Information from these cells is sent to the fly’s brain via the optic nerve, just like in humans. Once it was thought that flies saw hundreds of separate pictures, one from each ommatidia, but it’s now believed that their brains mix all the information into one picture of the world. Other animals with compound eyes include bees, butterflies, ants, beetles, shrimp, crabs and lobsters. The more units a compound eye has, the more an animal can see. An ant has several hundred ommatidia in each eye. A housefly as 2,000. And a dragonfly has the most of all - 30,000 units in each eye.

Some animals have eye structures that are unique. The scallop, for example, is an animal that lives in the ocean inside a shell. Around the edge of the shell the scallop has 50-100 eyes, each with a tiny structure that looks like a mirror. Light enters the scallop’s eye, hits the mirror at the back and is finally reflected onto the light sensitive cells in the middle of the eye.

ilo the monkey lived in the jungle with his parents.

He loved swinging through the trees and hanging from the branches, although he wasn’t allowed to wander too far away; he was still just a baby after all. One day, after his parents had gone off in search of bananas, he decided to play around in the big tall trees on the edge of the jungle. He’d only ever played in the small trees but was feeling adventurous and a little bit brave.

He jumped from branch to branch and swung around, using his long tail to try out new tricks. He completely lost track of the time but also, lost his way back home. He suddenly started to feel scared. It was getting dark and despite following a path he thought looked familiar, he had no idea where he was or how to get home.

Milo curled up on the branch of a tree and began to cry.

It was cold and he was hungry. What if his parents never found him? He should never have gone off on his own.

Would they be angry? Would they be sad? His mind was in turmoil as he sat shivering in the tree and he realized he was too frightened to even move.

After a while, he heard a noise down below and noticed a snake sliding around on the ground.

“Hello, can you help me?” Milo cried. “I’m stuck up in this

tree and can’t get down”.

The startled snake looked up at Milo. “I’m just a snake” he said. “I’m not strong enough to help you. Wait there, I’ll get some help”.

Milo watched as the snake slithered away.

He was worried he wouldn’t come back and it felt like hours before he finally returned, even though it was probably just a few minutes.

“I’ve bought Leo with me” said the snake.

“He’s bigger and stronger than me”. Milo gazed down at the lion at the foot of the tree and trembled with fright.

“Don’t be scared” said the lion. “I’m here to help you”. He looked up and down the massive tree trunk and up into the branches where Milo was still curled in a ball. “You’re too high up for me to get you” he said, “I’ll get some help”.

He watched as Leo strutted through the trees and under the watchful eye of the snake, waited for him to return.

A short while later Milo heard large footsteps approaching. “I’ve bought Edward with me” said Leo, introducing a huge, grey elephant.

“My word” said Edward, “how did you get up there? You’re too high up for me to get you, even with my long trunk. Wait there, I’ll get some help”.

Milo was starting to despair. If a giant elephant couldn’t rescue him, what chance did he have? His parents would be frantic by now. Were they out looking for him? Would they have saved him some bananas?

Suddenly, through the leaves, he noticed a pair of eyes looking down at him. He jumped with fright and nearly toppled from the branch. Clinging on, he stared, wide eyed into the face of a giraffe.

“Hello little one” said the giraffe, “I believe you’re stuck. Let’s get you down shall we?

Climb onto my neck and we’ll have you on the ground in no time”.

“I’m scared” said Milo. “It’s such a long way down”.

“There’s no need to be scared” said the giraffe. “Just hold on tight and don’t look down. Sid, Leo and Edward are waiting down below, they’ll catch you if you fall”.

Milo sqeezed his eyes shut and wrapped his arms around the giraffe’s long neck. It was soft and warm after the cold, hard branch he’d been sitting on. When he opened his eyes, he was back on the ground surrounded by the happy faces of his new friends.

George the giraffe asked him where he lived.

“I’m n-n-n-not sure” he stammered, “I got lost”.

“Oh dear” said George, “You are having a bad day”.

“I bet he lives by the fruit trees” said Leo. “Jump up, let’s go and find out”.

Milo jumped up onto the lion’s back and together, they all weaved their way through the jungle. After a while, things started to look familiar. Milo noticed Pauline the parakeet preening her feathers and then the leaf-cutter ants scurrying around their ant hill. “We’re here!” he cried, “I’m home!”

At the sound of his voice, his parents dropped down from a tree. “Where have you been?” asked his father. “We’ve been looking everywhere for you?” Before he could answer, his mother had wrapped him in a big, warm hug. “These are my new friends” said Milo, “they rescued me!”

“It was nothing” said George, “just a case of good old fashioned teamwork”.

Eye Care Your eyes are special. In the early years, they help you to find out about the world around you, about your home, about your parents. Later, as you go through school, the eyesight lets you learn and discover – in fact, about 80% of what is taught in schools is presented visually. Being able to see clearly is therefore incredibly important in your overall development. So it’s not surprising that we take our eyesight seriously.

Poor eyesight can cause learning and behavioral problems, which might be blamed on other things. This is especially true for young children, who may find it difficult to explain the difficulties they are having with their eyesight. They may not even be aware they have a problem at all.

During the preschool years, many vision problems can be detected during a routine vision screening. Common eye problems in children may include:

Amblyopia: Sometimes called a lazy eye, this is poor vision in an eye that appears to be normal. If untreated during childhood, amblyopiacan lead to permanent vision loss or impairment in the affected eye.

Strabismus: A misalignment of the eyes, commonly known as cross-eyed, which

causes eyes to wander. Both eyes do not always aim at the same object. If one eye is misaligned constantly, amblyopia may develop in that eye. Healthy vision can be restored by patching the properly aligned eye and forcing the misaligned one to work harder. Surgery or specially designed glasses may also help.

Refractive errors: These errors occur when the eye is incorrectly shaped and

vision is blurry. The most common of these are:

•Nearsightedness, also known as myopia or poor distance vision. Nearsightedness is usually treated with glasses.

•Farsightedness, or hyperopia, is poor near-vision and is usually treated with glasses.

•Astigmatism is an abnormal curve of the front surface of the eye and is treated with glasses.

‫مشاكل العين األكثر شيوعا عند األطفال‬

‫خالل سنوات ما قبل المدرسة‪ ،‬يمكن الكشف عن العديد من المشاكل في الرؤية أثناء الفحص الروتيني‬ ‫للرؤية‪ .‬قد تتضمن مشكالت العيون الشائعة لدى األطفال‪:‬‬ ‫العين الكسولة‪ :‬العين الكسولة هي ضعف بصر في العين التي تبدو طبيعية‪ .‬وإذا لم يعالج في‬ ‫مرحلة الطفولة يمكن أن يؤدي إلى فقدان البصر الدائم أو ضعف في العين المصابة‪.‬‬

Colorful Autumn Scene

November is here! It’s the brightest month in lots of countries where the deciduous trees shed their golden leaves. Autumn (or fall) can be breathtaking; it’s a carnival of nature and the last dance before winter hibernation. Let’s make a piece of it in our homes!

You will need: Pumpkin seeds, a sheet of white paper, a sheet of colored cardboard, white glue, watercolors and acrylic colors, pieces of corrugated cardboard.

The scientific name for a Bat is ‘Chiroptera’ which means ‘hand wing’. ‫االسم العلمي للخفافيش هو‬ .‫' الذي يعني جناح اليد‬Chiroptera' Most bats live in large groups called colonies.

They don’t build nests but live in caves, rock crevices, dead trees, buildings and underneath bridges – places to avoid the light. Marie Curie

The physicist who discovered radioactivity Marie Curie was born in Warsaw, Poland on 7th November 1867.

Her birth name was Maria Sklodowska but her family called her Manya. She was the youngest of five children.

Both of her parents were teachers. Her father taught math and physics and her mother was a headmistress.

She was very bright and learned to read and write at an early age. Unfortunately, as she grew older Russia took control of Poland and people were not allowed to read or write anything in the Polish language.

During a very difficult time for Marie, her father lost his job, her oldest sister died from typhus and her mother died from tuberculosis.

Marie wanted to attend university but during this period in Poland, university was only for men. Together with her sister Bronislawa, she hatched a plan! There was a university in Paris that women could attend. Marie worked to help pay for her sister to go to Paris and once Bronislawa graduated, she then helped Marie to do the same.

It took six long years but once Bronislawa graduated and became a doctor, Marie moved to France. She had read lots of books in the meantime and knew she wanted to become a scientist. She earned her degree in Physics three years later.

In 1894, Marie met Pierre Curie, also a scientist. They married a year later and soon had a child, a daughter named Irene.

Marie became fascinated by rays and began to carry out experiments. One day she was examining a material called ‘pitchblende’. She found lots of rays and realized there was a new, undiscovered element.

Together with Pierre, she was able to figure out two new elements. She named one of them ‘polonium’ after her homeland and named the other ‘radium’ because it gave November 2015

off such strong rays. They then came up with ‘radioactivity’ to describe elements that emitted strong rays.

In 1903, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Marie and Pierre Curie for their work in radiation. Marie became the first woman to be awarded the prize.

Sadly, Pierre was killed when he was run over by a carriage in Paris in 1906.

When World War I started, Marie learned that doctors could use X-rays to help determine what was wrong with an injured soldier. Unfortunately, there weren't enough X-ray machines for every hospital to have one so she came up with the idea of moving X-ray machines from hospital to hospital in a truck. Marie even helped to show people how to run the machines. The trucks became known as petites Curies, meaning ‘little Curies’ and are thought to have helped over 1 million soldiers during the war.

Marie died in France on July 4 1934 from overexposure to radiation, both from her experiments and from her work with X-ray machines. Today there are lots of safety measures to prevent scientists from getting overexposed to the rays.

Her daughter Irene won a Nobel Prize in Chemistry for her work with aluminum and radiation and her second daughter, Eve, wrote a biography of her mother’s life.

Marie became the Professor of Physics at the Sorbonne after her husband died.

She was the first woman to hold this position. She also became good friends with fellow scientist Albert Einstein.

Hey guys, once again we are continuing to review Skylanders so enjoy my 7th article for the Gaming Club.

Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure received generally favorable reviews, many praising the technological use of the ‘Portal of Power’. Although some reviewers criticized the absence of online multiplayer, the toys for the Skylanders were widely praised.

Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure was nominated for two Toy Industry Association awards: ‘Game of the Year’ and ‘Innovative Toy of the Year’.

Skylanders Giants was released to generally positive reviews. However, the reviews from Game Rankings and Meteoritic were slightly lower than that of the previous game on some platforms. Cheat Code Central gave the game 9.2/10 and commented that "it feels like someone finally got everything right when creating a sequel" and praised the ability to use the Skylanders toys from the first game, in the second.

Skylanders: Swap Force was also released to very positive reviews, with the reviews from Game Rankings and Meteoritic being the highest and most genuinely positive of the series so far across all platforms. Gaming website Quarter To Three gave both the Wii U and Xbox 360 a perfect score of 5/5. Video Game website Gaming Age gave the PlayStation 3 version the highest grade ‘A’ and further commented that "Whether you’re a Skylanders fan or a gamer who’s looking for a charming and unique familyfriendly game series to get into, Skylanders SWAP Force comes highly recommended".

Skylanders: Trap Team, again, was released to positive reviews. However, the reviews from Game Rankings and Meteoritic were slightly lower than that of the previous game on most platforms with only the IOS/Tablet version receiving the highest score.

Sir Isaac Newton was a mathematician on a mission to advance every field of mathematics. He took this mission so seriously that he never married. His work on mathematics led to the foundation of calculus. Newton was often referred to as an ‘extraordinary genius’ or the ‘greatest genius that ever lived’.

Newton came into the world on Christmas day 1642. His father had died three months prior to his birth. At first he wasn’t expected to live as he was born prematurely. Yet he did and years later a huge decision would not only change his life, but the course of mathematics for all. His mother wanted him to become a farmer like his father - good thing that he was awful at it! With encouragement from the master of the school, his mother let him complete his studies. He became the top ranked student.

Besides his many advancements in mathematics, he is also known for his discoveries in Optics, Mechanics, and perhaps most well known, his laws of motion: 1) An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by an outside force. 2) Acceleration of an object is directly related to the magnitude of the force applied. 3) For every action there is an opposite and equal reaction.

Last Saturday Wendy invited five friends for a weekend campout in her backyard. She paced and fretted, waiting for Saturday to arrive. When it did, Wendy’s mother took her to the grocery store early that morning.

St. Petersburg is the largest city in the North West region of Russia and the second largest in the country, behind Moscow. It is the largest city in the world that is not a capital, although it is often referred to as the cultural capital of Russia.

It is one of the most actively developing regions in the country and thought to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Although Moscow is in the same country, it is over 400 miles away!

St. Petersburg was the capital of Russia from 1712 to 1918. It was previously named St Peter, Petrograd and Leningrad before finally being named St. Petersburg in 1991.

It is 4772.6 km from Kuwait to St Petersburg and it takes a minimum of 8 hours and 35 minutes to fly there. There are no direct flights from one city to the other.

The flag of St. Petersburg has a red background with two silver anchors crossing each other with a gold scepter in the middle. The left anchor represents the sea and the right anchor represents the river. The scepter means that the city was the former capital of Russia. Together, they are called the ‘arms of the city’.

The city has warm, humid summers and long, cold winters. Sometimes the snow can last for over 130 days and temperatures can drop to -20 degrees C. It usually has 21 ‘white nights’ in the summer season (from 11th June to 2nd July) when the sun does not set – so it never gets dark!

Russian is the main language in St. Petersburg but English is frequently spoken too, particularly among younger people.

Some people call St. Petersburg ‘the capital of trams’. The length of the tramway is 600 kilometers - this fact is registered in the Guinness Book of Records!

The city has one of the deepest metro systems in the world with most stations situated 60-70 meters below the ground. One station (Admiralteyskaya) is 120 meters deep! The metro opened in 1955.

The famous Petropavlovsky Cathedral is located inside the Peter and Paul Fortress. The cathedral was built in 1722 and is the burial site of Russian tsars. It measures 122.5 meters up to the Flying Angel and is one of the city’s most striking monuments.

The Nicholas I Monument is considered a masterpiece of engineering art and stands on St. Isaac`s Square. The bronze equestrian monument is a 6 meter statue which was unveiled in 1859.

St. Petersburg is famous for another bronze statue, The Bronze Horseman which was commissioned

by Catherine the Great. The equestrian statue of Peter the Great sits atop the enormous Thunder Stone - the largest stone ever moved by humans!

The State Hermitage is a museum of art and culture and is one of the largest and oldest museums in the world. It was founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great and has been open to the public since 1862. It is home to the largest collection of paintings in the world.

Peterhof is a seafront museum complex and is one the most popular visitor attractions in St. Petersburg. The palace and the park are known as "the Russian Versaille” and host many firework displays. They are also famous for their system of fountains, including the spectacular Grand Cascade.

The Mariinsky Theater is an historic theatre of opera and ballet which opened in St. Petersburg in 1860.

The Narva Triumphal Arch was erected as a memorial to the war of 1812. It was specially constructed on the Narva highway to greet the soldiers who were returning from abroad after their victory over Napoleon. The arch is topped with an impressive triumphal chariot pulled by six ponies. It was officially opened in 1834.

Animal cruelty is a serious problem, no more so than in Kuwait. Cruelty doesn’t just mean the physical abuse of an animal; it can also be the result of neglect. Someone who deprives an animal of basic needs such as food and water is just as guilty of cruelty as someone who beats an animal with a stick.

It’s a well known fact that people who abuse animals are just as likely to hurt other people, either verbally or physically. This is why it’s so important to teach children to respect animals and treat them with care. If they learn this at an early age, they will be less likely to show aggression, not just towards animals but to other human beings.

Whilst it’s no excuse, some people simply don’t understand that what they are doing

to an animal is causing it pain. They have no comprehension that animals have feelings too and that they suffer from abuse and neglect, just as a person does. This is why education is so important.

There are hundreds of stray animals in Kuwait; mainly cats, but dogs too. In an ideal world, we would all open our hearts and take one of these animals into our home. Unfortunately, life isn’t that simple and none of us can wave a magic wand, transferring them from the streets into warm, loving homes.

One thing we can do though is show them respect. They don’t deserve to be spat upon, have stones thrown at them, or kicked as you walk by. People who do this to animals are cruel and cowardly, getting satisfaction by mistreating helpless animals. It’s important November 2015

It’s not just stray animals that are mistreated.

Some people abuse their own pets. There have been many reports of people taking extended vacations and just leaving their pets behind. In this climate, they will dehydrate very quickly but will die a horribly slow death. Pets are members of the family and should be treated as such. If you’re not going to love and care for your pet, don’t get one in the first place.

Quite often, it is children who ask for a pet. They like the idea of a cute kitten or puppy they can show off to their friends. But they need to know what is involved in taking care of their pet. It needs constant attention, plenty of exercise and regular food and water. In other words, it requires the same basic necessities that we do!

An animal is not a toy. It is not something you can just abandon when you get fed up of taking it for a walk or when something more interesting comes along. A pet is for life.

The same applies to other, slightly more unusual pets. Whilst you don’t need to take a rabbit or a mini turtle for a walk, you are still obliged to take care of the animal. Pet shops and market stalls offer a selection of unusual animals, reptiles and birds, designed to attract the attention of our ever-demanding children. But before you buy one of these pets, think about what is involved and the commitment you are taking on; and make sure you can make arrangements for its care when you take a holiday.

There are numerous animal shelters in Kuwait, and charities who work tirelessly to rescue, treat, shelter and re-home abandoned and mistreated animals. They do a fantastic job under very difficult circumstances; some of the sights they see are truly horrific. We can all do something to help these charities; from something as simple as donating dog food, to volunteering to help at a shelter for two-three hours per month. It’s a very rewarding experience and one which will teach children to respect animals. It’s also an ideal way for them to spend time with a dog or a kitten and to understand what is involved in the day to day care of a pet. It may also lead to the forming of friendships and who knows, maybe even the adoption of a well deserving animal.
