The Ring of Kerry on a Penny Farthing

Anto Cronin will attempt to cycle the 175km annual Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle on his Penny Farthing in aid of Kerry Mountain Rescue Team.

The Team are one of the beneficiaries for this year’s annual Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle.

To date the charity cycle has raised €1.26 million for 34 charities, The Char-

ity Cycle will take place on Saturday 41st year.

Anto will be joined by Kerry Mountain Rescue Team members Jimmy Laide, Ian O'Connell and Brendan Coffey for what is the 41st running of the iconic event.

Kerry Mountain Rescue Team members are highly experienced mountaineers, and provide 24-7-365 ‘on call’ assistance to climbers and walkers in distress on the mountains and upland areas of Kerry and West Cork. The team comprises of 38 volunteers from all walks of life who are available to respond to emergencies in the mountains at any hour of the day or night, and often in the harshest weather conditions.

The team is based in Killarney with an area of operation covering the mountains of the Iveragh, Dingle and Beara peninsulas. Team members train regularly in specialist rescue disciplines such as casualty care, technical ropework for casualty extraction, helicopter winching, search management, navigation, radio communication and 4WD techniques.

Healy Rae raises Torc Waterfall parking issues

The issue of cars parking in bus bays at Torc Waterfall is to be reviewed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

The matter was raised in the Dáil last week by local TD Danny Healy Rae. He asked the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage to look into the matter.

“There is an issue at Torc Waterfall whereby buses cannot pull in and park due to cars parking in these bus spaces. Could proper signs be erected at this location by the NPWS to ensure cars park properly and this would then allow the

Ring of Kerry cycle road closures

The Lower New Street Car Park will be closed until midnight on Saturday. There will be no access to Mission Road from 5.00 a.m. to 9.00 a.m. Saturday to facilitate the event start.

The first finishers are expected around 11.30 a.m. so Mission Road will be closed again from that time until 8.00 p.m.. Beech Road will be closed from 5.00 a.m. to 9.00 a.m. and 12.00 noon. to 8.00 p.m.

The Fossa to Killorglin Road (N72) will be close from 6.00 a.m. to 9.00 a.m. starting from the junction of the N72 and the R563, Milltown Road at Fossa via Ballymalis and Anglont and finishing

at the junction of the N72 and N70 at Laune Bridge, Killorglin.

Traffic diversions will be in place via the R563 through Faha and Listry and the N70 from Milltown to Killorglin.

Further closures along the westbound lane of Ring of Kerry route from Killorglin to Sneem will also be in place.

The Moll’s Gap road from Derreendarragh Cross near Kenmare to Torc will be closed from 11.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m.

“Motorists travelling between Killarney and Kenmare at the above times are advised to use the alternative N22 / R569 route via Glenflesk and Kilgarvan,” said a Kerry County Council statement.

Town centre big screen TV to show Kerry game

Cyclists who get to the finish of the annual Ring of Kerry Cycle will be able to watch the Kerry v Tyrone match on a big screen in the Beech Road Car Park.

Over 4,000 cyclists are expected to take part in the charity event.

The majority, after completing the 170km cycle, will arrive back in Killarney around the same time as the All Ireland Quarter Final is scheduled to start at 3.45pm. The match is only being showing online via the GAAGo platform but cycle organisers will place a big screen close to the finish line on Mission Road so cyclists and their supporters won’t miss any of the action.

Killarney Skate Park officially opened

Cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Niall Kelleher officially opened the new Killarney Skate Park ‘Cluiche’ on Friday last. The new skate park, which is situated in the grounds of the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre, was developed by Kerry County Council, in consultation with the local skateboarding community in Killarney, and with the Killarney Skateboard User Group.

The €260,000 project was funded by Kerry County Council and the De-

partment of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media under their Sports Capital Programme. The park itself was designed by Vulcano Skateparks and built by Brown Brothers Site Services Ltd. under the supervision of Kerry County Council.

Speaking at the launch, Cllr Kelleher welcomed the opening of the park,

Killarney Rotary Club selects new president

Killarney native Barry Murphy has been elected as the new President of Killarney Rotary Club.

He will lead the organisation in its 40th year after taking from Rayla Tadjimatova at a special meeting at the Killarney Great Southern on Wednesday.

Barry said 'I served as president in 2000 - 2001 and was pleasantly surprised and honoured to be the newly elected president of Rotary Killarney in its 40th year. I am looking forward to the year ahead and

working alongside all the members.”

Killarney Rotary is in the process of compiling a history of the club to mark its 40th year.

“If anybody has any memories or photographs of Rotary events or how the Rotary donations made a difference to their charity that they wish to share we would really appreciate it,” added Mr Murphy.

A full programme of events is planned for the year ahead including a fashion show and the popular afternoon tea meeting.

The idea was first mooted by Cllr Donal Grady as far back as 2017.

Six of the best for Killarney in IBAL report

The fact that Killarney received six A grades and moved up the rankings in the latest Irish Business Against Litter League has been welcomed by the town’s Chamber of Tourism and Commerce.

The town has been described as being clean to European norms by the adjudicators and it has increased its overall standing in the league by eight places to 20th position.

Joint Chamber President Johnny McGuire, who is also involved in the town’s Tidy Towns campaign, said it was very encouraging and gratifying that a top grade was secured in six of the categories and that the judges were very impressed by the main streets in the town, with both Plunkett Street and Main Street securing an A grade.

“It was wonderful also that Lewis Road, the Maurice O’Donoghue Memorial Park and Riverwalk, the approach road to town from Muckross and the bring facility in the Mission Road car park were all deemed worthy of the top grade,” Mr McGuire said.

“Great credit is due to the Killarney Municipal District Council’s outdoor crew who are out and about every day to ensure the town is being well kept, and thanks also to the volunteers and individual businesses who demonstrate great pride of place and give the town an extra polish.”

He acknowledged that there were disappointing aspects in the latest IBAL report, some of which were quite surprising, but that it is encouraging to note that the

council has plans to upgrade the problematic bin storage area in the Glebe car park which has been highlighted for criticism in the last two litter league reports.

“Keeping the town looking its best is a team effort and everybody has a part to play. The revamped Killarney Looking Good Competition is now up and running again, with great incentives on offer, and there will be a great focus on that as the summer months progress with the winners to be announced in September,” Mr McGuire said.

In the meantime, he has extended an open invitation to anybody willing to get involved in the Monday night Tidy Towns Meitheal to come forward to help out and he said the more people that make themselves available, the better Killarney will look.

Tactical thoughts raise €750 for Pieta

This week I caught up with Max Coyne, a 15 year old Transition Year student at St Brendan’s College Killarney, who recently completed a full marathon of 26.2 miles wearing a 10kg Tactical Vest to raise funds to the tune of €750 for Nathan's Walk, Darkness into Light, which he was so disappointed to have missed out on in May due to other commitments.

Max, a member of Muckross Rowing club, integrated the distance into his training runs, over a 6 day period, running an average of 4.5 miles each day in addition to his normal water and gym sessions. Max walks the Darkness into Light each year in remembrance of Nathan O’Carroll.

“This year, I wanted to do something that would draw attention to the struggles some of our family and friends carry through each day, but that are not visible to the rest of society,” Max said.

“Running with an extra 10kg on my body really gave me a sense of how a person

could feel the weight of their thoughts or their troubles, and how that could get the better of you."

“Lots of times I think people are afraid to say they are suffering, and sometimes I think that trying to explain to your friends how you feel can be as hard as actually living with the burden of mental health challenges.

"That’s why it seemed to be a good idea to try to represent anxiety which is invisible, with a real weight like the 10kg vest. It is something that others can see and identify as a big thing you are carrying, and that they might be able to help with, by offering to share your load, and carry some of your burden.

"When my friends saw me doing the runs, a couple of them joined me for some of my runs, some put on a vest too and ran with me, and some of my friends felt they couldn’t run with the extra weight, but they ran beside me to keep me company and that felt just as good.”

“As well as highlighting a really good cause, it was brilliant to be able to raise €750 to give to Pieta House and that shows how much people really do care about helping others struggling with mental health issues.” I was inspired by Brian Foley of Activate gym who completed the 'Marathon des Sables' for Pieta House this year, and who loaned me the Tactical Vest for the week of training."

Killarney to celebrate Independence Day in style

American-style razzmatazz, the likes of which has never been seen in Kerry before, will ensure Killarney is a riot of colour and excitement for this year’s eagerly awaited 4th July celebrations.

This will be the landmark 10th year of the festival which will be more spectacular than ever before and the proof of that can be found in the incredibly packed and exciting programme of events lined up. Festival Chairman, Diarmuid Leen, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce Events Manager Katy Jacobi and their dedicated committee of volunteers have organised a wonderful celebration to mark Independence Day which, this year, will see great entertainment and funfilled activities not only on Tuesday, July 4 but also on Monday, July 3. An open invitation has been extended to everyone to celebrate America’s big holiday in Killarney which is a town with a very close association with the US for generations.

The great celebrations will include a gala and colourful parade through the streets, open air concerts and music sessions, an

outdoor screening of a movie classic, a bumper street party and so much more.

MONDAY NIGHT OPENING

The festival will get off to a rocking start on Monday, July 3 when hugely popular local band Truly Diverse will perform at an open air concert at Killarney House and Gardens from 9.00pm to 9.45pm and that will be followed at 10.00pm by an open air screening of the smash hit movie Mamma Mia with the audience invited to singalong to all the favourite ABBA hits.

The gates of Killarney House and Gardens will open from 8.30pm and tickets for the free admission event, which are in huge demand, are available from Eventbrite.

The Independence Day festivities on July 4 will get underway, appropriately, with the traditional raising of the American flag at the town hall with the Mayor of Killarney and the President of Killarney

Chamber of Tourism and Commerce presiding at 3.00pm.

The ceremony will be followed by a musical performance by the Three O’s who will deliver a string of finger-clicking classics at Kenmare Place from 3.15pm with all the old favourites from Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Dean Martin and Elvis Presley on the playlist.

Main Street, Killarney will take on a distinctive downtown Manhattan vibe all afternoon with the Statue of Liberty and Uncle Sam forming a perfect backdrop and selfie props as patrons can enjoy the atmosphere with an interactive drum show while street entertainers, balloon artists and face painters will be roaming the streets.

The local sheriff has been tipped off to expect an influx of colourful cowboys on the Tuesday afternoon but he expects them to be on their best behaviour as they join in the fabulous Independence Day party.

AMERICAN FOOTBALL

Brass bands will be performing on the streets from 6.00pm, a lively DJ will get

the street party going from 6.45pm and at 7.00pm will be the great highlight of the Killarney’s 4th of July celebrations with a big parade winding its way through the streets.

It will feature spectacular floats, marching bands, cheerleaders, Disney characters, leather-clad motorcyclists on their dream machines and colourful flag bearers and it really is a visual feast that should not be missed.

The parade will be led by visiting American footballers all the way from Georgia Tech and in attendance will be their star kicker, Castleisland native David Shanahan, a former Kerry minor footballer. And the celebrations won’t end there as a Beat on the Street, with DJ Brendan Fuller, will keep partygoers on their toes as Killarney soaks up the unique atmosphere of Ireland’s greatest 4th July festival.

The celebrations are organised by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce with the support of Kerry County Council, Fáilte Ireland and the National Parks and Wildlife Service and with the generosity of sponsors Heineken, Killarney Park Hotel, Great Southern Hotel Killarney, O’Donoghue Ring Collection, GMIB, Reidy’s, The Grand and others. On the evening of Wednesday June 21, staff and students of West End House School of Arts Killarney gathered in their black box Studio for an inhouse student showcase.

In attendance on the night were School founder Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, who came home to Killarney for the inaugural student showcase in memory of late Director, Donie Courtney. Donie’s wife Adeline O’Brien, and children Jonah and Líla Courtney were also in attendance on the night, as were Michael's parents Josef & Adele Fassbender.

With performances from students in their teens to their seventies, the night displayed the range of creative opportunity available to the town at this Arts School.

In leaps of beginners bravery and abundant raw talent, scenes and monologues from plays and films unfolded on the stage and delighted the audience of students as they watched what their peers had been working on over the course of the year.

The showcase came to an end with songs from students of the Youth Theatre programme. So big was the homegrown arts school community of students, not even their friends and family could get a much

sought after ticket to the show.

School Director Jessica Courtney Leen opened and closed the night in acknowledgement of her uncle Donie Courtney’s vision for the school.

She invited Michael Fassbender, School founder, to close the show where he spoke proudly of his work with Donie over the years.

He shared stories of their earlier days right up to the opening of West End House School in January 2022.

An emotional tribute was made by Donie’s wife Adeline who said : “We are so happy to see how the school is thriving, Donie would be so proud.”

The school will continue its courses of ten week classes from September when the next term begins.

Before that two drama camps will take place in August for children and teenagers which will culminate in a showcase and a performance of a play written by the late Courtney.

Films revealed for OsKaR Fundraiser

Over 100 people from the two neighbouring parishes of Glenflesk and Kilcummin have signed up for OsKaRs 2023, an exciting fundraiser to be run later this year.

They have signed up to take part in one of eight movies which will be filmed in the autumn and showcased at the main event, ‘A Night at the OskaRs’ on December 7 in the INEC.

Kevin Rowe Events is working with the clubs on this fundraiser for the second time and it was responsible for the choosing of the films and the casting of all the actors.

“People have been bursting with excitement for the last two weeks waiting to find out what films they would star in and what part they would play,” said Derry Healy from Glenflesk GAA.

“All was revealed at the launch night

which was held in Kilcummin GAA Club on Friday night. All details had been kept top secret until the night and were announced to rapturous cheers and applause by MC, Brendan Fuller, ably assisted by DJ Gav.

“The films for this year’s event include ‘Veronica Guerin’, ‘The Wind That Shakes the Barley’, ‘Calendar Girls’, ‘Braveheart’, ‘Bridesmaids, ‘Blues Sisters’, ‘Kerry’ Girls and ‘Downfall’.

“The atmosphere was absolutely brilliant as each film and cast was revealed, we are looking forward to an exciting year,” said Niamh Dwyer of Kilcummin GAA.

“Be active, Be cool in St.Oliver’s School” – is the slogan that inspired the staff and children of the school to be more active this year.

The Active School is a Department of Education initiative supported by Healthy Ireland, and part of the National Physical Activity Plan.

An active school is where physical activity is valued, promoted and enjoyed by all.

St.Oliver’s active flag student council is made up of students from third to sixth class who spearhead weekly activities throughout the year.

There were ‘Feel Good Fridays’ every month incorporating activities such as

table tennis, athletics, discos and Irish dancing.

Every class in the school took part in a Run-Around-Ireland challenge where the school ran a combined total of 9000kms. There were active breaks, staff versus children challenges, sports days, active week, run-around-Ireland ventures, discos and much more.

“Activity, learning and fun were combined in an inclusive, positive environment. It brought the school environment together, promoted health and fitness, and above all the Active Flag Initiative was a very positive experience for the whole school community,” said Colm O’Suilleabháin, school principal.

KASI Hosting ‘Killarney Le Chéile’ Day with Live Performance and Art

Killarney based migrant support organisation, KASI - Killarney Immigrant Support Centre, are hosting an intercultural day - Killarney Le Chéile - on July 8.

Le Chéile - the Irish word for together, will highlight the contributions of migrant and local communities towards positive integration in Killarney.

The event, being held on St Mary’s Cathedral grounds, will feature live music and

interactive art, as well as food from the KASI World Kitchen.

A participatory drum-show from Drum Dance Ireland will also be held, as well as other activities, with people of all ages invited to join.

KASI Coordinator, Marilyn Catapat-Counihan, looks forward to hosting KASI’s first public event since before the pandemic.

“This is our first opportunity to hold an event like this in the past few years, and

we welcome everyone in Killarney and further afield to come over to the Cathedral Grounds on the day to make it extra special. The pandemic, followed by the war in Ukraine, have presented some unprecedented challenges to society in recent years, and already vulnerable migrant communities were often impacted the most. We are proud to support people in the most vulnerable situations through uncertain times, and we are also delighted to be able to host such a posi-

tive, forward-looking event like this.," she said.

Killarney Le Chéile will be held from 12pm to 4pm on July 8.

PAINT LIKE A PRO: How to Paint a Wooden Shed

Looking for a weekend DIY project? Painting your shed is a great way to add colour to your garden while also ensuring long-term protection against the elements.

• BEFORE YOU START

As a rule, wood needs to be completely dry before painting so time your project for a dry stretch.

Step 1: Weather (New Sheds Only)

If your shed is new, allow several months before painting for the shed to weather. Check the manufacturer’s instructions to find out how much time is needed.

Step 2: Prep

Take measures to protect surfaces you don’t want to paint. Cover nearby surfaces and plants with dust sheets. Trim back unwanted foliage or tie back plants. Mask off handles and fittings with Deltec Purple Masking Tape.

Step 3: Clean

If you are repainting an existing shed, make sure that it is as clean as possible before painting. Start by washing it down with Fluxaf Pro-Clean. Note - this is a concentrated formula so read the instructions to find out how much dilution is needed before use. Then, scrub vigorously with a stiff brush and rinse. Tackle remaining mould, moss or dirt with Farbex Exterior Fungicidal Wash (again making sure to dilute by the amount specified in the instructions). Always leave sufficient drying time between each step.

Step 4: Sand

Use a sanding block or pad to remove old, flaky paint. Sand in the direction of the woodgrain so that you don’t miss

any spots. Wipe down the shed afterwards to remove any remaining sanding dust.

Step 4: Spot-Prime (New Sheds Only) To prevent knots from bleeding-through your paintwork, spot-prime them with an appropriate shellac-based primer such as Ray’s Primer.

Step 5: Choose Your Paint (Topcoat) For a quality paint that can be used as both primer and a topcoat, we recommend Ralston 3-in-1 Aqua Satin. Ideal for both painted and unpainted sheds, this product can be tinted to any colour of your choosing.

Cuprinol 5-Year Ducksback offers a wide range of attractive ready-made colours suitable for use on sheds. This product colours and weatherproofs sheds for up to five years.

Step 6: Paint!

Stir the paint well before use. Start by using an angled 2” brush to cut-in around any fittings, windows, doors, and edges. Then, use a 4” masonry brush or a long-nap roller to paint the remaining area – making sure to paint in the same direction as the grain. Once the first coat is dry, paint a second coat. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for information on drying times.

Kerry Airport is preparing to offer a customary ‘céad míle fáilte’ to the passengers arriving to the county on board the inaugural Chalair flight from Brittany, France on Saturday.

The aircraft will touch down at 9.20am with visitors from Quimper and Brest while the first outbound passengers will depart from Kerry just before 10am on the same day.

The seasonal summer service will operate every Saturday with a flight time of less than 1 hour 40 minutes from Kerry to France on board a 70-seat ATR 72 aircraft.

The CEO of Kerry Airport, John Mulhern, said: “Our summer schedule has been very successful so far and the introduction of this new seasonal service to France is a welcome addition to our choice of destinations from Kerry. We are looking forward to welcoming the first French passengers to Kerry on Saturday morning. Ultimately, their arrival and

those who will follow over the coming weeks, will boost the local economy during the peak tourism season.”

Chalair is an independent airline that has been operating scheduled flights in France since 1986.

Its fleet of aircraft ranges from 19 to 70 seats and is currently the reference airline for such aircraft on the French market. These new destinations from Kerry to Quimper and Brest in Brittany will bring to nine the number of routes that will be available to passengers for the summer months.

Kerry Airport already serves Alicante, Faro, Dublin, London (Luton and Stansted), Manchester and Frankfurt Hahn with Ryanair.

A wonderful initiative by Killarney Celtic FC to ensure inclusiveness and to guarantee game-time opportunities for players with intellectual, physical and sensory needs has just celebrated a landmark birthday.

The Football for All project is aimed at players aged between six and 18 and a special celebration has been held to mark 10 years of great success.

The final training session of the season at Celtic Park was followed by a fun-filled birthday party with games, treats and novelties, and club members turned out in force for the occasion.

Also in attendance was the outgoing FAI regional development officer Chelsea

Noonan.

The project commenced in February 2013 when the club, determined to be fully inclusive, organised a six-week pilot programme with the FAI, spearheaded by Football for All Development Officer for Munster Nick Harrison.

Celtic then appointed its own specialist coaches, including John Don and Jane O’Donoghue, whose youngest daughter has autism and dyspraxia, and other parents Denis and Amelia Tucker, Claire Doherty and Denise O’Regan.

The programme grew year on year and several specialist soccer blitzes were attended in Cork, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford and Dublin where all Football for All clubs came together to play non-com-

petitive matches.

“As much as it is about soccer, it is also about social skills and friendships,” said organiser Jane O’Donoghue.

“In the earlier years, we travelled by bus to away blitzes and we also had overnight stays in Dublin and Youghal and we did this as whole-family events,” she added.

Killarney Celtic’s Football for All stars also highlighted their skills at half-time at Turners Cross for high-profile Cork City FC League of Ireland games.

“Cork City FC have been extremely good to our FFA team and 10 years on, we are still in contact with them,” said Jane.

"Football for All is for players that want the competition but also those that just want a kick around for an hour on a

One high-achieving player was Fiana Bradley who started out with Celtic’s Football for All team and progressed on to mainstream soccer with Cork City FC and the Ireland under 16 and under 17 women’s teams."

"It was great to see and hear the much loved Killarney six-oared boat on the water again and renew historic rivalries and great friendships.

Well done to everyone who rowed for Flesk Valley on Sunday and congratulations to our medal winners. Flesk Valley had victories in the U14 Boys and Girls, U16 Boys and U18 Girls in the coastal category. We're especially proud of those who rowed in their first Killarney regatta on Sunday and hope that they'll have many more in the Valley colours," said Flesk Valley Rowing Club's Donal Kelly. "Thank you to all our coaches, coxes and hard-working committee members who did a fantastic job over the weekend, whether on the water or feeding the masses in the club tent.

Finalise CAO choices ahead of Change of Mind deadline on July 1

It is really important that you take some time to look at the details of your CAO application, particularly your course choices. To use the Change of Mind facility you simply log on to www.cao.ie, click on ‘My Application’ and log in with your CAO number, date of birth and account password.

You can add, take out and amend your course choices with the exception of ‘Restricted’ courses which can’t be added in at this stage.

There are exceptions to this in that you may be permitted to introduce a restricted course which shares the exact same assessment procedures with a course you had applied for by 1st February at 5pm - you should consult with the relevant Higher Education Institution (HEI) before introducing such a course. At this stage work through the following guide when reviewing you details in your CAO application

Check that all your details are correct including personal details, qualifications & assessments (including educational and exemption) details and course choices. Include courses on both categories, Level 8 & Level 7/6. This gives you the best chance of getting 2 offers when the Round 1 Offers come out (the top choice that you qualify for on each list). You will then have to choose which one you prefer.

Fill in as many of the 20 choices as you can. You have the option to fill up 10 on both sides which gives you 20 chances of getting a college place.

Check the Alert Lists on www.cao.ie. Some very interesting new courses have been added in several colleges since the CAO Handbook was published last September.

Take out courses that you are no longer interested in.

Research the detail of every course that

you are including on your CAO application – take particular note of entry requirements and modules so that you choose courses which you are able for and interested in and that suit how you learn. This cuts down on the chance of making the wrong choice.

List your courses in ORDER OF PEFERENCE. This is the golden rule of CAO. No one knows what the points will be for 2023 until the day the Round 1 offers come out on August 30 and equally you won’t know your Leaving Cert results until they are issued on August 25th. My advice is don’t try to second guess either of them and before 5pm on July 1st make sure that your course choices are list in ORDER OF PREFERENCE! This means listing your favourite course in your favourite college first, your second favourite next and so on down to number 10. Include courses that you are confident of getting – ‘banker courses’, but make sure you are interested in the course content. There is no point in filling all your choices

Parkinson’s no obstacle for Carrantuohill challenge

The sky’s the limit for an inspirational West Waterford man diagnosed with Early Onset Parkinson’s Disease as he ends an incredible 28 day adventure that saw him visit all of the EU 27 countries and scaled each of their highest elevation points.

On Sunday Ian O’Brien (42) concludes his inspirational mountain marathon when he scales Carrantuohill from Cronin’s Yard at 10.30am and has issued an open invitation to the people of Kerry to join him on his epic adventure. Father of two, Ian was diagnosed with Early Onset Parkinson’s Disease five years ago. His adventure, titled Eur-Up-Ian, started in early June when he scaled Mont Blanc and finishes on Sunday on top of Carrantuohill, the place Ian’s love for hiking began.

“The idea came to me very early in my diagnosis. A good friend insisted I climb Ireland’s highest mountain, Carrantuohill. It acted as a metaphor for me. If I can get to the top of Ireland’s highest mountain then I can get on top of my diagnosis. This European adventure will hopefully spread that message to others living with Parkinson’s Disease.”

Pre-diagnosis was the most difficult time for Ian, not knowing what was wrong with him.

“I had slight motor related symptoms, but it was the non-motor symptoms, especially depression and anxiety that really impacted my life.”

Ian’s reaction, both to his diagnosis and since has been incredibly inspirational. Exercise has many benefits in managing

the symptoms and slowing the progression of this degenerating neurological condition.

“I have embraced this philosophy as a means of managing my Parkinson’s Disease and found hiking to be my sport of choice. I am taking it to a new level with this inspiring fundraising and awareness adventure. My aims are to raise positive awareness of Early Onset Parkinson’s Disease in Ireland and throughout Europe and to promote and fundraise for https://eopd.ie/ and the services available.”

Tubridy unlikely to be back on air soon

Speaking at the Oireachtas Media Committee on Wednesday deputy director general Adrian Lynch said it is untenable to have Ryan Tubridy presenting his weekday radio show while coverage of undeclared payments to him continue.

Lynch explained that the decision was an editorial one and rested with himself as the acting editor-in-chief.

According to Ian any diagnosis comes as a shock and that Parkinson’s disease is perceived to be an older person’s condition. “I am not old. Search the words “Parkinson’s Disease” on the web – you will see pictures of older people. I want to change that perception and make people aware that it affects many younger people too. Unfortunately, it is the fastest growing neurological condition and my story may become an all too familiar one”.

The national broadcaster RTE has been shaken by the recent Ryan Tubridy payment scandal, which has ignited a widespread debate regarding the governance, transparency, and fairness within the organisation. Tubridy, has been at the center of the controversy following revelations of additional payments made to the former Late Late Show presenter at a time when the broadcaster had told the government that all of the top 10 earners were taking a salary cut in line with their strategy to reduce costs.

Public trust has been undermined, casting doubt on the presenters future with RTE. In the wake of the scandal, there have been mounting demands for reforms, these include calls for greater transparency in the remuneration process, stricter oversight of public funds allocated to broadcasters, and the implementation of clear guidelines for fair and equitable pay structures.

Public asked to share views on new passport design

The Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin, has today launched a survey seeking the public’s input into the design of the new passport book and card.

Speaking on Wednesday Mr. Martin said, "I am delighted to launch the passport design survey which will invite the public to participate in the process of designing our next generation passport. The Irish

passport is a vital document of the Irish State and it currently ranks fifth in the Henley Global Passport Index. This high ranking provides citizens with visa-free access to 189 countries. High quality design is central to maintaining the integrity and reputation of the Irish Passport. "My department is currently working to identify the design and security aspects of the new passport book. As part of this

process, and to encourage people to connect with the next passport book, I invite everyone to share their views in this short survey. The survey provides people with an opportunity to select aspects of Ireland’s diverse natural environment that they would like to see in the new passport book and card design."

The survey is available on gov.ie and takes roughly 5 minutes to complete.

New law makes South Koreans 1 year Younger

Since Wednesday 28th June, all South Koreans have become younger due to the introduction of a new age-counting law aimed to redefine how individuals calculate their age.

Under the previous system, South Koreans calculated their age differently from other countries. Individuals were considered one year old at birth, and their age increased by one on every New Year's Day. Additionally, South Koreans celebrated their "Korean Age" as a mark of cultural significance, separate from their "International Age."

Recognising the need for change in a society shaped by globalization, South Korea has taken a progressive step by adopting a new age-counting system. The implementation of this law aims to

Upheaval in Paris region after police shoot teen

In a heart-wrenching incident that has shaken the nation, a French teenager lost his life this week after being shot by police during a confrontation in the Paris region. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, escalated after police stopped a teen driving a yellow vehicle.

According to French media, police initially suggested the teen drove his car towards them with the intention of hurting them but footage posted online tells a different story. It shows two officers at the vehicle. One points his weapon at the driver through the window and appears to fire at point-blank range as he tries to drive off.

Employing young people

Deirdre Vann Bourke, Kerry Development Manager with South Munster Citizens Information Service looks at some useful information in relation to the employment rights of young workers.

Who are classed as ‘young workers’?

Young workers are people aged 14 to 18, who work for an employer. As they are generally in full-time education, they are protected by different employment laws than adults. This is to make sure their work does not put their health or education at risk.

The law also sets out different rules for young workers, depending on their age.

Workers aged 14 and 15 are classed as ‘children’. Workers aged 16 and 17 are classed as ‘young persons’. Do employers have to receive proof of age and written permission from parents?

Before young workers can get a job, they must show a copy of their birth certificate (or other proof of their age) to the employer.

If they are under 16, they need written permission from their parent or guardian. This permission letter must be given to the employer.

Are there any restrictions on employing 14 and 15 year-olds?

Yes there are. By law, children aged 14 and 15 cannot be employed in regular full-time jobs. However, they can: Do light work during the school holidays (they must have at least 21 days off work during this time).

Take part in an approved work experience or educational programme (once the work is not harmful to their health, safety or development).

Work in film, cultural, advertising or sport (under licences issued by the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment).

Outside school term time i.e. during school holidays, children aged 14 and 15 can work a maximum of 35 hours a week (or up to 40 hours if they are on approved work experience).

During school term time children aged 14 are not allowed work during school time, while children aged 15 can do 8 hours of light work a week.

Are there restrictions on employing 16 and 17 year-olds?

Young people aged 16 and 17 can work a maximum of 8 hours a day, up to 40 hours a week. If the young worker is under 18 and works for more than one employer, their combined daily or weekly hours cannot exceed the maximum number of hours allowed.

Young people aged 16 & 17 are only allowed to work between 6am and 10pm.

What are the rules in relation to rest breaks during the working day?

Children aged under 16 must have a half-

hour rest break after 4 hours work and young people aged 16 & 17 must have a half hour rest break after 4.5 hours work. If you are aged under 16, you must have 14 consecutive hours off each day and 2 days off each week, while 16 & 17 year olds must have a daily break of 12 consecutive hours and 2 days off each week.

Can young people work in a licensed premises (such as a pub)?

A. Young people who are attending school can be employed on general duties in a licensed premises, such as a pub. It is important to note that general duties does not include selling alcohol at the bar or in an off-licence.

During school term, they can only work until 11pm on a day that is not immediately before a school day. For example, you can work until 11pm on Friday night if you are not in school on Saturday. However, you cannot work until 11pm on Sunday if you must be in school on Monday.

Employers who employ young people in a licensed premises must follow the Code of Practice concerning the Employment of Young Persons in Licensed Premises.

What is the minimum wage for young workers?

Since 1 January 2023, the national minimum wage is €11.30 per hour. However, not everyone is automatically entitled to get this. Workers under 18 are only guaranteed up to 70% of the national minimum wage, which is €7.91 per hour. Your employer can pay you more than the minimum wage if they want, but they are not required to by law. Are young workers entitled to receive tips and gratuities?

If you work in a job where staff get tips and gratuities from customers (such as a restaurant or bar), you are not automatically entitled to get these tips. However, you are not required to give your tips to your employer either.

If all tips are collected by management and paid to staff through the payroll, then these tips are taxed in the normal way. Upcoming changes to the law on tips will give employees new legal rights in relation to both cash and card tips. Employers will have to make sure tips are distributed to staff fairly, equally and in a transparent way. They will also have to display a notice explaining how tips are shared among staff. This has not come into effect yet.

One of the fastest cars ever seen in Kerry set for Ballyfinnane

One of Ireland’s top hillclimb racers has confirmed his participation in the Brian O’Neill Garden Equipment and Trailers Ballyfinnane Festival of Speed.

Ben O’Brien from Limerick will race his Gould GR37 Hillclimb Special in Kerry on July 16.

This new event is jointly organised by Kerry Motor Club and The Ballyfinnane Community Association. It will celebrate 120 years of closed-road motorsport in County Kerry. The first-ever event in the Kingdom was won by Charles Rolls, who later became a founder of the Rolls Royce Motor Company, on July 15, 1903. Almost 120 years to the day, racing cars and rally cars will once again go against the clock on a closed road in the famous mid-Kerry village.

O’Brien will drive his 600bhp – fitted with a Judd Formula 1 spec engine in the commemoration event.The former Irish hillclimb saloon class champion is one of the first drivers to commit to the event.

“It has over 600 bhp on tap and weighing in at just over 500kgs it’s a ball of fun to drive and certainly keeps me on my toes,” said O’Brien.

“I have only recently purchased the car

and pre-Ballyfinnane only competed in one Hillclimb in it, a masters’ event in France where I came first overall and was the first Irish person to win this event. No pressure in Ballyfinnane then!”

Kerry v Tyrone Saturday at 3.45pm Croke Park

Fierce rivals Kerry and Tyrone meet on Saturday in one of the ties of the round as the Kingdom seek to lay some ghosts to rest at Croker. While it’s a common misconception that the Red Hand County have traditionally had the upper hand in this fixture (Kerry have won four and lost four of the eight championship matches between the two), it’s certainly true Tyrone have bragging rights at the moment.

Their unexpected victory in the 2021 semi-final, and all the baggage surrounding it, left a mark in this part of the world. You won’t hear the players saying it in so many words but as far as supporters are concerned, this is a shot at revenge.

The good news is that Gavin White (calf) and Paul Geaney (hamstring) have recovered from the injuries that ruled them out of the last game against Louth. Killian Spillane (ankle) is unavailable but if Kerry manage to navigate their quarter-final, the Templenoe man could play a part in subsequent rounds.

Tyrone are looking quite strong them-

selves after seeing off Ulster rivals Donegal in the preliminary quarter-final. The Canavan brothers, Darragh and Ruairí, will take minding and they are also strong at midfield where the imposing figures of Conn Kilpatrick and Brian Kennedy have the potential to dominate.

Feargal Logan and Brian Dooher’s team are slight underdogs according to the bookmakers but that’s exactly how they like it. Kerry know that anything short of their best will more than likely signal the end of their summer.

Kerry v Tyrone will be followed by Armagh v Monaghan at 6pm. Somewhat

controversially, neither of the Saturday games will be on free-to-air television. They will instead be shown on GAAGO. So far Kerry have appeared on RTÉ just once during the 2023 championship. The Sunday double-header will be live on RTÉ. Derry v Cork begins at 1.45pm with Dublin v Mayo getting underway at 4pm. All matches will be decided on the day. That means extra time and penalties if necessary.

The Kerry ladies are also in action this weekend. They take on Cavan in Austin Stack Park on Saturday at 12.30pm. Victory will see them top their group and secure a home All-Ireland quarter-final in the process. The match can be streamed via the LGFA’s official livestreaming portal.

Celts to host Kerry FC in memory of John Doyle

Killarney Celtic and Kerry FC have announced details of an exciting and fitting exhibition match in honour of a man who represented both club and county with great distinction.

Clarke appointed Lakers head coach

Former St Paul’s star Brian Clarke will coach the Scotts Lakers for the 2023/24 season, the club has revealed.

The Killarney native takes the reins from the outgoing Jarlath Lee, who steered the team throughout the past two seasons. In a statement, the club thanked Lee for his service. “His dedication and commitment to the role has helped establish the Lakers as a solid force in the division and we thank Jarlath and wish him well for the future.”

Clarke was an integral part of the popular St Paul’s National League teams of the 1990s and 2000s. A highly skilled and durable player, he could turn a game in an instant and his guile and craft marked him out as one of the finest players in the county.

His link-up with Vince Daly, Pat O’Shea and Cormac O’Donoghue, alongside leading Americans like Terry Smith, Corey Jackson and Billy Gilligan, heralded an exciting era for Paul’s – ‘HOUSE FULL’ signs were a regular sight in the Pres Gym during this era.

Clarke also won an All-Ireland with the Kerry footballers in 1997.

After retiring, he turned his attention to coaching. Most recently he took charge of the St Paul’s U18s last season. This team, with players likes of Jack O’Sullivan, Eoin Carroll, Mark Sheehan and Oisín Spring, will form the backbone of the National League squad going forward and this creates an exciting dynamic for the club.

The Lakers will be completing their squad in the coming weeks with the season pencilled in for a late September start. A new rule change permitting teams to play two Americans at the same time should make things interesting and this week the club also announced the signing of 6’7” Texas native Braden Bell for the upcoming season.

Bell has experience of playing Division 1 college basketball with the Marist Red Foxes and more recently the Prairie View Panthers. Although he is essentially an inside player, he is also adept from outside and his versatility and mobility are seen as beneficial qualities for this young Lakers side.

The club are also working on another high-level American signing and a deal is thought to be very close.

Kerry to enter team in women's soccer league

Kerry FC have confirmed that they will be entering a team into the Women’s Under 17 League of Ireland Academy from the 2024 season onwards.

“We hope that this new pathway for women footballers in the county will ignite the women’s game here in Kerry and give players the chance to prove themselves on a national front,” an official statement read.

Kerry FC Head of Academy Damian Locke added that he is “delighted to have our application into the 2024 WU17 LOI

Academy accepted”.

“There is great work being done both within grassroots clubs and at the FAI Centre of Excellence over the past number of years. Providing this platform for girls to have equal opportunity as our academy boys has been a priority of the club since we joined the League of Ireland.

“It’s a very exciting time for women’s football in our county as it’s been the common practice for girls from Kerry to travel around the country to play in the Women’s League of Ireland over recent years, but that will no longer be required.”

John Doyle sadly passed away 10 years ago following a long battle with illness and to mark the anniversary of his death, a charity match will take place at Celtic Park on Wednesday, July 26 with all proceeds going to Comfort for Chemo Kerry.

“This will be a fantastic occasion to remember a fantastic guy and we’re all looking forward to it so much as it should attract a capacity crowd for a great cause,” said Karl McMahon, a friend of John’s and one of the organisers of the event.

“We are very grateful to Billy Dennehy and Kerry FC for taking time out from their first year in the League of Ireland, and in the middle of a hectic season, to facilitate this game.”

Celtic are currently on a high after completing an unprecedented five Kerry league and cup doubles in a row, while Kerry will be bringing plenty of League of Ireland calibre talent to Celtic Park. Poignantly, the game will unfold in front of the John Doyle Stand.

A solid all-round performer, John was also a very accomplished Gaelic footballer with Spa and he won an All-Ireland Hogan Cup medal with St Brendan’s College in 1992.

There will be an auction at half-time with prizes including gear donated by Kerry GAA stars David and Paudie Clifford, a Kerry jersey signed and donated by the great Colm Cooper, a jersey donated by former Manchester United star and current Wrexham goalkeeper Ben Foster, and other wonderful items.

Guests of honour at the game will be John’s wife Lynda, daughter Ruth and

members of the extended Doyle family, as well as many former teammates and friends who remember a very fine gentleman and a brilliant sportsman.

The memorial game, sponsored by Killarney Kenmare and Caherciveen Credit Union, the Sheehan Group, and Utility Plus, is being organised by a committee made up of John’s great friends. Supporters’ concerns over GAAGO are fair and valid

Broadly speaking, I think GAAGO is fine. I’ve used it quite a bit and, although some users had complaints earlier in the season, I find the app and the website reliable and easy to use. I’ve never had a problem with service dropping out midstream and I have no real complaints about the quality of the coverage either. So far, so good.

But there are definitely some very important questions that need to be addressed. Firstly, does a GAAGO subscription represent good value for money?

At the start of the championship, it was announced that 38 football and hurling matches would be shown via the GAA and RTÉ’s joint livestreaming venture. The cost of an annual subscription was €79 with individual games available for €12 each.

Effectively, GAAGO took over from Sky Sports, who ended their broadcasting deal with the GAA in 2022. I’ve noticed some people saying that criticism of GAAGO isn’t valid because GAAGO simply replaced Sky, but there are some key differences between the two.

Sky isn’t cheap: a basic Sky TV package is

€35 per month and Sky Sports is an extra €15-25 per month. So, if you purchased Sky just to watch GAA matches, or even if you already had Sky and got the sports package just to watch GAA, it was significantly more costly than GAAGO is now. However, when you pay for Sky, you’re also getting year-round access to hundreds of other channels and live action from basically any sport you can imagine, including the Premier League, golf, Formula 1, the NFL and the NBA. A more like-for-like service would be the NBA League Pass, which allows fans to watch all 82 of their teams’ matches plus NBA TV content for €82 a year.

Taking Kerry as an example, three of their games have been shown on GAAGO this season (this weekend’s quarter-final will be their fourth). That works out at roughly €20 per game, so naturally it would have made more sense to buy the games individually if watching Kerry was your only concern. But even at €12 a pop, that’s a total of €48 for four games. You could almost get Sky for a month with that money. It would also pay a good chunk of your dodgy box fee – not

that the illegal practice should be condoned or encouraged.

When Sky were around, they were competing with RTÉ for games and eyeballs.

Now it appears that there is no competition at all. RTÉ and the GAA can divide the schedule up as they see fit, with both parties seemingly profiting off both services. It’s hard to see how that lack of competition can be good for consumers.

And that’s before we tackle the issue of access and connectivity. For some older people, concepts like subscribing to an online streaming service and downloading an app are alien. Your phone screen can be cast to your TV screen but that process can be tricky even for young folk. Plus, the quality of broadband in rural areas might make streaming difficult in the first place. It’s all hassle. Lots of Kerry fans who can’t make the journey to Dublin this weekend will be following it on the radio (and with the cost of everything these days, I’m sure many fans simply can’t travel). No disrespect to my media colleagues in radio but if you’re not seeing the spectacle with your own eyes, you’re bound to be

missing out on something.

There are also concerns over the games the GAA are choosing to show on GAAGO. Kerry are the All-Ireland champions but they have appeared on free-to-air TV just once in this championship. Kerry v Mayo in the group phase and now Kerry v Tyrone are huge fixtures that every football fan in the country would like to see, yet they were put behind a paywall. Think of it this way: David Clifford is the best player in the country, idolised by countless children all over the island. He has been shown on RTÉ in a live match just once this championship. If your parents can’t afford a GAAGO subscription, tough luck. In terms of promoting the sport and its stars, it doesn’t make much sense.

GAAGO has potential. Streaming is going to become more and more prevalent and the GAA would be foolish to ignore that fact.

But viewing it as a money-printing machine, while leaving older or less affluent supporters behind, is bound to generate resentment – and there is plenty of that going around at the moment.

Guerin to be honoured at Killarney Golf Club

Tonight, at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club, Michael Guérin will be honoured for his many achievements with the small orb.

It is particularly fitting this year as 2023 marks the 60-year anniversary of that unbelievable three-in- a-row of South of Ireland (SOI) golf titles (1961, 1962 and 1963).

Golfers will know just how difficult it is to win even one of those prestigious titles against the top amateurs in the country. Even the great Pádraig Harrington, who is still starring on the pro circuit and won again last weekend, failed to win the coveted SOI at Lahinch. He was beaten in two finals.

Dermot Gilleese, the golfing correspondent, will MC a host of tributes from Paul McGinley, Darren Clarke, Eoin O’Connell and so many more. Seán Fleming, the well-known professional singer in New York, and a near neighbour in Gortroe, said: “Michael was an exceptional golfer, a real natural, who practised diligently to perfect his game. No wonder this lovely person won so much.”

Interestingly, Seán was born in the Killarney golf club where his father Jerry was the steward. It was a very modest building in the past and it looked out on an orchard, famous for its sweet apples. That is now the 18th green on Mahony’s. So, when your next birdie putt slides agonisingly past the hole, blame it on the apples of yore.

KEVIN O’DEA

To the best of my knowledge there are only two people alive who were at Lahinch to see Michael win the three Majors of amateur golf. One is in the USA and the other is alive and well (over 90 years old). Recently, I visited Kevin O’Dea in his Greystones, Co Wicklow home and he recalled some of the great shots Michael played to win those titles.

“I have many happy memories playing with Michael Guerin and supporting him on tournaments such as the South of Ireland,” Kevin said. “That three-ina-row was very special. Michael had all the shots and a pure natural at executing whatever shot was needed. I saw him play an impossible recovery shot from the shore in Lahinch and get down in regulation when a multi-bogey seemed to be the only outcome.

“I played very often with Michael, and I

never once saw him lose his cool, a perfect gentleman and very sporting. No throwing of clubs if he hooked his drive.

“We played a fourball regularly and when it came to the 18th in Mahony’s, we elected to tee off from the edge of the present 17th green. Even that didn’t faze him. Invariably, his tee shot was on the green - even in winter conditions and winds rolling off the lake. He had the shot for all seasons and all challenges.

“Michael Guerin was a pure natural.” Incidentally, Michael said that Kevin was very modest about his own golfing ability. When Kevin was 18 years old, he won the President’s Prize in Killarney playing off 23. He was cut to 14 and continued to improve. Later, he won the same trophy playing off 3.

CHALLENGING

Lahinch is beautiful, rugged, testing and more than challenging for most golfers, especially when the wind whips in from the Atlantic. The Yanks love it and any day you go to Lahinch you will meet so many Killarney coach drivers delivering those Yanks, who will be hoping to shout “get in the hole” just once on their round (probably a two-foot putt).

Michael Guerin, the octogenarian, still loves his friendly fourball, or more accurately his fourball with friends. When he tees of in Killeen or in Mahony’s the completive spirit kicks in. I spoke with Michael earlier this week, as modest and humble as ever about his achievements, as top sports personalities are. They let their golf or other sports exploits speak for themselves. Winner alright, despite the age.

“Yes, I really enjoy the fourball with my friends. It’s very competitive. You’re always trying to make the best decision of what shot to play to make sure that you get down in the least number of shots. I play with Seánie Brosnan against Tom Prendergast and Dermot Foley and there are no gimmes in those games. It’s competitive between friends, and it’s still wonderful, even though I cannot drive the ball as far as I did in my younger days.”

Not alone does Michael Guerin still look like a golfer but he plays to match the appearance. I have been fortunate enough to play behind that quartet many times. All four are very competent, but the standout is the man wearing the white golf cap. The same smooth swing, the measured, controlled takeaway, and the

follow through defies his age. Consistent. Classy.

Three SOI titles, so many appearances as an Irish international, several Scratch Cup wins and very special indeed is a record he holds since 1966 when he set the course record for Mahony’s. That 66 gross included four fives and bogey four at the par 3. To the best of my knowledge, that record still stands.

Best of luck Michael on the many well-deserved tributes coming to you tonight at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club. That and many more achievements were relayed in tribute to Michael on these pages during Covid. Here are some snippets of that interview.

ELITIST

Members of the Killarney club were very elitist as far back as the founding of the nine-hole course at Deerpark in 1891, and that continued after 1937 when Mahony’s Point was opened. Caddies were not allowed to join the club as members, so in Michael’s early days caddying was the only alternative. All he could do was learn about the game of golf.

Dr Billy O’Sullivan took a great interest in the caddie, and Michael learned so much from him. He was also very fortunate to get to know the great Jimmy Bruen who also saw the potential in the 18-year-old. “I used to deliver milk to him. He had a caravan down along the right side of the 16th fairway near Hotel Europe. Later he moved near the 1st green in Killeen. It was into the left on the road linking the present 1st and 3rd holes.

“Dr Billy loved the weekly fourball. Thursday was a half-day for most employees in Killarney at that time, so it was a very popular day for golf. Many of the priests in St Brendan’s College were good golfers and played on Thursday afternoons. Dr Billy’s fourball included John C. (Cooper), Scottie (Eamonn Scott), and Tom Cooper (the cinema). Frank Campbell was another regular”. Michael was working at Liebherr, as was his brother Patrick. “Patrick was a fine golfer, but unfortunately he was killed as a young man in the factory and that was an awful blow for the family.”

MEMBERSHIP

Eventually Michael was allowed join the club in August 1959 as an 18-year-old. Money wasn’t flaithiúil in the Guerin household, so there was no hope of acquiring a branded matching set of clubs

fitted to the unique requirements of the 18-year-old.

He started with a set of ladies’ clubs which included irons 4, 6 and 8. Added to these were 3, 5, 7 and 9 irons from a men’s set, as well as a driver. This unorthodox mismatch of a set also included a Pinpointer pitching wedge. For a putter, he used a Crotty blade. That was his arsenal for the first club competition he won, the Mrs Grosvenor’s President’s Prize in Killarney in 1959. Michael won it with 71 gross, one under par, and a 64 nett. That was a v-par competition.

“I played off 7 that morning and brought in that great score. I was cut three shots there and then, so I was given a 4 handicap for the separate afternoon competition. Of course, I was young then and took no notice of playing 36 holes in competition on the same day.

COURSE RECORD

Within one year of becoming a member in Killarney, he went on a winning streak. In 1960 he set a new course record for Dooks carding an amazing 63. That was five shots better than the existing record. Not surprisingly he was called up for the Munster team and played in the inter-provincials in 1960 and in 1961. “While I was working in Liebherr, I hurt my left thumb badly and I remember playing in the Junior Irish International with a heavily bandaged left thumb.” Golfers will appreciate the important role of that thumb in one’s golf grip. I put it to Michael that he was a big hitter. “I was in my heyday and regularly my tee shot on the 13th in Mahony’s went down the hill, stopping short of the drain. I could also send my drive on the 16th down over the hill on the fairway, stopping short of that drain near Hotel Europe. My second shot then to both of those greens was an easy wedge, so I was putting for an eagle and birdie at worst. “That was then and not now. Age takes its toll. That is the one thing you notice as you grow older. Your shots lack distance, even the well struck ones.”

Michael still remembers his best ever round well.

“Doesn’t every golfer remember the day he/she shot an exceptional round? Mine was in a competition playing against Ivo (Sullivan). It was a 13-hole competition in Mahony’s old course where I carded 12 under for the 13 holes.”

What an unbelievable round. Birdie after birdie.

SENIOR LADIES: The Ladies County League kicked off last Monday night with the visit of Ballymac to Direen. Having met already in a tight game in the Donal Curtin Cup this was another ding dong battle. Aided by a slight breeze Ballymac led by three points at half time, thanks mainly to a penalty save by their custodian. A strong second half showing by the Legion girls reeled them in as the game entered the final stages, but Ballymac regrouped to eventually squeeze out a 0-11 to 0-10 win.

JUVENILE BOYS UPDATE: The U11 Boys headed to Keel for the final round of Go Games on Thursday evening. We had two teams in action and all twen-

ty-four boys saw plenty of game time. Our U15 Boys were in East Kerry League action during the week and if these games are anything to go by, we are in for an exciting month. The White team entertained Rathmore on Wednesday evening and trailed for the vast majority of the game. But crucially they did get their noses in front just at the right time. Two quick fire goals in the dying embers of the game sealed the points on a 4-14 to 4-12 scoreline. The Green team were in Listry on Friday, and they too played their part in a free-flowing encounter. Unfortunately, they didn't come out on the right side of the result despite a late rally. Final score Killarney Legion 3-8 Keel/Listry 5-8.

SFL DIV 1: Dr. Crokes 1:16 Castleisland Desmonds 1:07. Another win for our senior team in the SFL means that we now sit on the top of the Div. 1 table going into the last round of games. Our final game of the SFL will take place on the weekend of July 8th/9th away to Milltown Castlemaine.

O’Neills 4:28. Our senior hurlers suffered a heavy defeat in Austin Stack Park on Saturday last. The second half saw our opponents putting on an exhibition of hurling scoring 1:14 throughout the half. They deserved their victory in the end and march on to the next stage of the Championship.

SFL DIV 4: Dr. Crokes 0: 14 Keel 2:12. Our second team suffered a 4-point defeat when they welcomed Keel to Lewis Road on Sunday. We now face St. Michaels Filmore in our final game of the SFL.

ACADEMY: Our academy continues every Saturday up until July 15th. We cater for boys and girls aged 4 to 11 from the Killarney area. Hurling from 10 to 11 and Football from 11:15 to 12:15. Fossa and Gneeveguilla served up a very entertaining game for a good attendance for this EK final played in perfect conditions in Spa this evening. The second half saw the introduction of Mikey Moroney and Jack Cronin, and both played helped sway the tie in Fossa’s favour - Mikey’s ball winning ability and also scored a fine point and a brilliant goal by Jack Cronin saw Fossa win it on the night. Thanks to Spa for giving the field for the final and having the pitch in perfect condition. The game was reffed by John Purcell of Kilcummin who did a fine job. Ann Holland presented the trophy to the winning Captain - Ted O’Gorman. A big thanks to Willie Buckley, trainer of the Fossa Minor team and to Kieran O’Brien also. Dermot Clifford assisted this evening as Kieran was away. The team celebrated their win with a meal at The Golden Nugget Bar, Restaurant & Off Licence.

U15: The U15Bs were beaten at home by a stronger Kilcummin side but a very good performance by the team on the night. FILMS REVEALED: The parishes of Glenflesk and Kilcummin have been buzzing with anticipation in recent weeks in the aftermath of the Casting Night for OsKaRs 2023, an exciting fundraiser being run by neighbouring clubs later in the year. The interest from locals in the two parishes has been fantastic with 105 people signing up to take part in one of 8 movies which will be filmed in the Autumn and showcased at the main event, ‘A Night at the OskaRs’ on December the 7th in the INEC. Kevin Rowe Events who are working with the clubs on this fundraiser for the second time, were responsible for the choosing of the films and the casting of all the actors. ‘People have been bursting with excitement for the last two weeks waiting to find out what films they would star in and what part they would play,’ said Derry Healy from Glenflesk GAA. All was revealed at the Launch Night which was held in Kilcummin GAA Club on Friday night. All details had been kept top secret until the night and were announced to rapturous cheers and applause by MC, Brendan Fuller, ably assisted by DJ Gav. The films for this year’s event include Veronica Guerin, The Wind That Shakes the Barley, Calendar Girls, Braveheart, Bridesmaids, Blues ‘Sisters’, ‘Kerry’ Girls and Downfall. ‘The atmosphere was absolutely brilliant as each film and cast was revealed, we are looking forward to an exciting year’, said Niamh Dwyer, Kilcummin GAA.

The atmosphere was electric as people awaited their roles and the films in which they would act. FÉILE: Our Under 15 Féile team departed Spa last Friday morning for a day of bonding activities in Kilkenny. They headed to Carlow Town on Saturday morning for 3 group games versus Burren Rangers (Carlow), Bailieborough (Cavan) and Arklow Rock Parnells (Wicklow). After the first round of tough group games, we found ourselves in the Shield semifinal against a much stronger Carlow Town team who emerged as winners. Well done to this brilliant young group for representing our club and county with pride and determination. 18 out of the panel of 23 are eligible to play again next year. Thanks to coaches Gerard Breen, Padraig Griffin & Kate Lynch for all their hard work preparing the girls for the weekend.

On Friday June 24th we held our 6th Friday Evening Mixed Scramble and despite the break in our heatwave it was another very successful evening with a very large field of golfers and good food afterwards. THE JIMMY BRUEN SHIELD: Our Ross GC team played host to Limerick GC in the first round of this competition last Saturday in testing conditions. After a titanic battle the Ross team had to give way to Limerick on a scoreline of 3:2. Well done to all involved.

FIXTURES: On Friday June 30th we will

hold our 10-hole mixed scramble with a shotgun start at 6. 30pm sharp. Please be at the Clubhouse or have your name on the entry sheet by 6 pm to participate in the scramble. The scramble will be followed by food which can be ordered and paid for before the scramble. On July 1st and 2nd, we will hold Lady Captain Mary Moynihan's Prize to the Gents. This will be a stroke play competition.

BEST OF LUCK to the Ross GC Country Clubs team when they travel to Clonakilty to take on their hosts in the first round of that competition at 2pm next Sunday, July 2nd. Any support will be very welcome for our team on the day.

Please note that the course will close to all play at 4pm on Friday to facilitate the staging of these events and will re-open Sunday after the finish of play in the Munster Qualifiers (roughly 3pm). Dress Code applies for both events.

TIM SCANNELL: The postponement of last week’s opening round of the competition due to the weather means we now begin our campaign next week in Tralee.

Muckross Rowing Club

KILLARNEY REGATTA 2023: A long wait ended on Sunday last with the staging of the historic Killarney Regatta for the first time since 2019. The day was an outstanding success for the club, with Muckross the winner in 15 of the 16 traditional Sixing races, with only the Novice Ladies Sixes title eluding the club. The haul of silverware is a great reflection of the effort in training put in by the crews however the highlight of the day was certainly the participation of all the younger rowers in both Sixing

and coastal races. Many of the underage crews enjoyed their first Killarney Regatta and will hopefully continue the tradition long into the future. Our thanks to everyone who supported the club from coxing to organisation onshore and supply of home baking. Special thanks to St. Brendan’s RC for the loan of the ‘George Lynch’ Six, which was among the winning boats on the day. Special thanks also to Commercials

RC who loaned the club a coastal Four on the day. Proceedings drew to a close on Tuesday night at the Regatta Dance and presentation of prizes. Well done to Grace O’Connor who represented the club in the Regatta Queen contest.

REGATTA SEASON: Best of luck to all our crews competing this Saturday in the Rowing Ireland 1k Classic at the NRC in Cork and in Fermoy Regatta on Sunday. The Irish Rowing Championships are scheduled over three days, Fri-Sun, July 14-16.

Killarney Valley AC

MUNSTER: Congrats to four of our athletes who represented Munster in the prestigious Tailteann Games Interprovincial last Saturday, Jason O’Reilly won the 400m, Cian O’Brien came 3rd in the 200m, Dylan O’Brien came 7th in the Shot Put and Anna O’Shea came 6th in the Pole Vault.

JUVENILE: The Munster Juvenile Championships U14-U19 was held in Templemore. Cian O’Brien won the U18 100m and came 3rd in the U18 200m, Dylan O’Brien won the U18 Discus and came 2nd in the Shot Put, Babatunde Smith came 2nd in the U14 High Jump, Anna O’Shea came 3rd in the U16 Pole Vault and Keelan Veerasoo came 3rd in the U18 Triple Jump. Conor Scannell came 2nd in the U10 60m and 3rd in the Long Jump while Conor O’Donnell came 2nd in the U10 500m in the Juvenile Munster B Track & Field Championships last Sunday.

IRELAND: Sarah Leahy competed with the Irish Relay Team to come 2nd scoring valuable points for Team Ireland in the European Team Games in Poland. Ciara Kennelly won the Northern Ireland Senior High Jump Title with a leap of 1.75m. Congrats and well done to everyone.

CAMP: We still have some spaces in our Kids Summer Camp. It is live on our website with 6 weeks to choose from and caters for kids aged 5-12yrs. Book early to avoid disappointment.

MUNSTER RUGBY SUMMER CAMP: The annual Munster Rugby summer camps return to Aghadoe this summer and will take place between the 24th and 28th of July next. Open to boys and girls aged between 6 and 12 years of age, these camps take place between 9:30am and 1:30pm each day. The cost is €80 per child. TAG TUESDAYS: Tag rugby is back for the summer at Aghadoe and is proving very popular. LAND ROVER RAFFLE: Killarney RFC are honoured to be chosen as one of the charities for this year’s Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage Raffle with a wonderfully restored 1979 Land Rover the top prize, as well as a host of other amazing prizes. KILCUMMIN COMMUNITY GAMES: Kilcummin Community Games held their medal presentation on Tuesday 20th June for area and County winners of the art and handwriting competitions in the Recreational Hall, Kilcummin. A huge thanks to everyone for coming along on the night. We wish best of luck to our U10 & U12 Handwriting County Champions, Dara Counihan and Saoirse Lucey as they progress to the All-Ireland Finals later in the Summer in Carlow.

TRACK AND FIELD: Well done to all the athletes who competed over the weekend, many athletes progressed through the heats to semi-finals. Dan Barry U12 100m final, Sadie Sugrue U8 60M final, Aodhan O’Halloran finished 5th in the Long Puck U12, and Eamon O’Donoghue came 4th in Shot Putt.
