ARE YOU PLANNING YOUR SUMMER HOLIDAYS?

As you are aware the HSE have changed the reimbursement amount for those who wish to travel to Belfast for Cataract removal

Is your passport in date? Is there someone in your family who never held a passport?

I wish to advise that I will continue to organise buses to Belfast as long as there is interest in the scheme so I urge you to contact me or my office for further information if you are waiting to have a cataract removed and don’t want to be left waiting by the HSE for 4 years

First time passports are currently taking 8 weeks to process so DON’T DELAY ON APPLYING

Following the HSE’s recent announcement that the reimbursement to people travelling to Belfast for a Catatact Procedure would be reduced, I raised the matter in the Dail with the Taoiseach and Minister for Health and the HSE.

They have agreed to extend the date of changes for the reimbursement until the end of August 2024.

Therefore I am advising anybody who is in need of a Cataract Procedure to book your place NOW on one of the three buses that I have arranged during the month of August.

Please contact myself or my office for full details and everything will be arranged for you.

I assure you that I will continue making strong epresentation until such time as the Government can provide a proper service for people in the Republic of Ireland. Until such time, the reimbursement needs to be reinstated to the full amount to ensure people can go to Belfast to get their sight back.

Fitzgerald Stadium hopeful of government funding this month

Kerry County Board is eagerly awaiting the announcement of the €120 million Large-Scale Sports Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF) allocations later this month, with hopes that Fitzgerald Stadium will be among the major recipients.

The iconic Killarney venue is one of 12 GAA applications vying for a share of the LSSIF funding, which ranges from €600,000 to €30 million.

The Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media has outlined that the assessment process will consider factors such as population size, sustainability, and equal access for both men and women to the LSSIF-funded facilities.

Kerry GAA has unveiled an ambitious €77 million redevelopment plan for Fitzgerald Stadium, aiming to transform the venue into a premier sports, tourism, and entertainment destination. The proposed upgrades include a range of enhancements to the stadium's infrastructure, facilities, and amenities. These include the covering of the central section of the iconic O’Connor Terrace. A new tier is to be added to the top of

the terrace with a roof that will stretch roughly from one 20-metre line to the other, according to previously released drawings.

The Scoreboard End will get a new terrace and the Lewis Road End will be converted to an all-seater uncovered stand. The existing O’Sullivan Stand will also be replaced with a new stand.

The ambitious redevelopment project will radically alter the appearance of the Fitzgerald Stadium.

In addition to the LSSIF funding, Kerry GAA has initiated a legal process to secure funds from the Immigrant Investment Programme, which has now closed.

questions delays in Greenway connections to Fossa Way

Cllr Brendan Cronin is set to raise concerns at the upcoming Kerry County Council meeting regarding the lack of progress in connecting the Kerry Greenway network to the Fossa Way. Cronin believes that connecting the Greenway to the Fossa Way would significantly enhance the cycling network in the region, providing access to the Lakes of Killarney and popular tourist attractions like Tomies Wood. At Monday's council meeting, Cronin will ask the council executive the following:

Mayor of Killarney calls for action on publicly owned buildings

The Mayor of Killarney, Maura Healy Rae, is set to put pressure on Kerry County Council regarding the future of publicly owned lands in the town.

At Monday’s council meeting, she will introduce two motions aimed at addressing the current state of these assets. In her first motion, Mayor Healy Rae will ask the council executive for an update on St. Finans Landbank. She will inquire about any discussions that have taken place between Kerry County Council, the Department, the Land Development Agency, and the Health and Safety Executive regarding the future use of this land.

Her second motion will call for the council to write to the HSE seeking an update on the future use of the District Hospital

and St Columbanus Home in Killarney. Mayor Healy Rae will also inquire if Kerry County Council has received any information regarding these properties. With the new community hospital set to open later this year there are concerns that the existing community hospital will fall into a state of dereliction just

like St Finan’s. Mayor Healy Rae's concerns stem from the neglect of previously publicly owned lands such as Áras Phádraig and the Pretty Polly Factory. These properties have fallen into disrepair, while government agencies seem to be taking an excessive amount of time to determine their future use.

"In light of Kerry County Council's clear support and backing for the construction and development of Greenways in South Kerry and North Kerry, why has no progress been made with connecting the 'Fossa Way' cycle/ walkway around the Lakes to Tomies Wood? This important project has been highlighted at Municipal District and Full Council level over a number of years and seems to have been left behind."

Giant Peig Sayers puppet to take centre stage at Killarney Culture Night

Culture Night 2024 promises to be a spectacular celebration of Kerry’s unique arts, culture, and heritage, with a giant puppet of renowned Blasket Island storyteller Peig Sayers taking centre stage in Killarney.

This year’s Culture Night, taking place on September 20 across the county, offers a diverse array of over 50 events, performances, and exhibitions. This free, county-wide celebration invites everyone to explore the artistic landscape of Kerry.

Coordinated by the Arts Service of Kerry County Council, Culture Night Kerry is now in its 19th year. It serves as a platform to showcase the county’s thriving artistic and cultural communities.

“Culture Night is a collaborative experience, opening doors and inviting people to discover new cultural experiences,” said Kate Kennelly, Arts Officer.

“It’s a free showcase of local arts and culture, a chance to celebrate our creativity.”

Culture Night in Kerry is supported by The Arts Council, Creative Ireland Kerry, Munster Technological University, and various arts partners.

Peig Sayers Comes Alive in Killarney Among the many highlights coordinat-

ed by Assistant Arts Officer Hannah Pinckheard is the captivating SíleMar performance in Killarney. A giant, 10-foot puppet of Peig Sayers will be brought to life, celebrating the renowned storyteller, mother, and island woman.

Accompanying the giant Peig Sayers puppet will be animated symbols of island life, including mackerel and gannet puppets, and magical lantern naomhógs, the traditional island boats.

The West End House School of the Arts will further bring Peig Sayers’ energy to life through projections, movement, music, fire dancing, and draíocht (magic).

“Culture Night is a chance to showcase the wealth of culture that Kerry has to offer,” said Cathaoirleach of Kerry, Councillor Breandán Fitzgerald. “Thanks to the continued support of the Arts Council and Kerry County Council, all activities are free of charge.”

Killarney for Palestine vigil for Gaza's children

The Killarney for Palestine group held a vigil on Sunday, to honour the children of Gaza who have been tragically affected by the ongoing conflict.

The event took place adjacent to the Courthouse at midday.

In recent months, over 16,400 children have been confirmed dead in Gaza, a figure that surpasses the total number of primary school children in County Kerry. This devastating statistic highlights the severe impact of the conflict on the region's young population.

The vigil included a brief walk through the town.

Participants paused at schools along the route to reflect on the stolen lives and dreams of Gaza's children.

The group called on the community to show solidarity with Palestine and support their cause.

"We believe that there should be solidarity from every strata of society for Palestine," said a spokesperson for Killarney for Palestine.

The group holds weekly vigils at the Market Cross on Thursdays at 7 p.m. and every Sunday at the Courthouse to highlight the ongoing genocide in Palestine. They have also organised several other events to raise awareness and support for the Palestinian cause.

The Mon named

into historical sexual abuse

The Mon School in Killarney is among several schools in County Kerry named in the Scoping Inquiry into historical sexual abuse, published this week.

The report details over 800 people accused of more than 2,300 instances of abuse at 308 religious schools across Ireland.

The inquiry gathered figures from religious orders themselves, who were asked to provide a breakdown of allegations and alleged abusers by school.

According to the report, Presentation Brothers The Mon, Killarney had one allegation of historical sexual abuse and one alleged abuser.

While The Mon School was named with one allegation, it's important to note that this is just one instance among many reported in the inquiry.

The establishment of a State inquiry into historical sexual abuse is one of a number of recommendations made by Senior

Counsel, Mary O’Toole in the report.

The Scoping Inquiry organised a Survivor Engagement process where those who had experienced sexual abuse in day and boarding schools run by religious orders were invited to come forward and share their views regarding an appropriate response, Minister for Education, Kerry TD Norma Foley said.

“The Report of the Scoping Inquiry is a harrowing document, containing some of the most appalling accounts of sexual abuse. The scale and horror of what people described in their interviews with the Scoping Inquiry is shocking, and the lasting impact on the lives of those survivors cannot be overstated. I have been deeply moved by the courage, fortitude and openness of all those who have shared their experiences.”

Several other schools in County Kerry also faced allegations of abuse. The report highlights the widespread nature of the issue within religious institutions across Ireland.

Pinewood Estate transformed by vibrant community art project

The residents of Pinewood Estate are celebrating the completion of a stunning community art project that has transformed their recreational area into a vibrant and inviting space.

Led by local artist Deborah O'Connell O'Keeffe, the project involved painting the walls of the recreational area with colourful designs and artwork. The initiative was spearheaded by Marguerite Harty, the treasurer of the Pinewood Residents Committee, who grew up in the estate.

"Deborah was fantastic and involved the children in the community to participate in completing the artwork," said Marguerite Harty. "We really couldn't have done it without the direction of Cllr Martin Grady."

The recreational area now features a multi-use games area for basketball, soccer, tennis, or volleyball, as well as a fully equipped outdoor exercise area with top-class keep fit gear. These enhancements, combined with the vibrant artwork, have created a welcoming and enjoyable space for resi-

dents of all ages.

"There is a wonderful community spirit in our estate," added Harty.

"We are a community of 160 homes and take great pride in where we live. It's a team effort all round and a great place to live. Our recreational area is enjoyed by all ages with a curfew of 9pm to be respectful to our elderly residents."

Over the past six months, the residents of Pinewood Estate have also achieved another significant milestone: the creation of a community garden.

The garden is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the residents, who have come together to beautify their neighbourhood.

Marguerite Harty thanked residents for their efforts and acknowledging the valuable contributions of Dan Doona (Snr), who has been instrumental in maintaining the public areas of the estate.

New Zealand Ambassador visits town before L'Etape

The New Zealand Ambassador to Ireland, Sir Trevor Colin Mallard, was visiting Killarney this week.

He was in town before participating in the L’Etape event on Saturday. He used the opportunity to meet with members of the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce members and Kerry Tourism Industry Federation officials.

Joint-chamber president Padraig Treacy and KTIF chair Pat O’Leary met with Mr Mallard.

The ambassador was particularly impressed with the town’s Coffee Cup project.

He also took an interest in the National Parks and Wildlife Service's attempt to reintroduce eagles to the area. Wildlife officials in his hometown of Wellington are trying to reintroduce the kiwi to that area.

In a random connection to Killarney, Wellington’s CentrePort is served by container cranes manufactured in Fossa.

Additional traffic warden to combat illegal parking

In a bid to address the ongoing issue of illegal parking and improve traffic flow, Killarney Municipal Council is set to recruit an additional traffic warden.

The decision was announced following a special meeting last Thursday to discuss the persistent traffic problems plaguing the town.

Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Maura HealyRae, expressed her frustration with the growing number of motorists double parking and occupying designated

loading bays.

She questioned whether allocating additional resources, such as increasing the number of traffic wardens, could be a viable solution to the problem. In response, the council confirmed that a recruitment process is currently underway to fill the vacant traffic warden position.

It is hoped that the presence of an additional traffic warden will not only deter illegal parking but also contribute to smoother traffic flow throughout the town.

22,890 vehicles use the bypass every day

While the newly opened Listowel Bypass is expected to alleviate traffic congestion in the town centre there, the situation in Killarney continues to worsen.

Despite a significant increase in traffic volumes, the proposed Killarney bypass remains unapproved, leaving residents and businesses frustrated.

Cllr Brendan Cronin expressed his deep concern at a recent Killarney Municipal District meeting.

He highlighted the dramatic rise in traffic, noting that "all the roads are choked and every back road is being utilised."

Cronin cited a recent survey indicating that 22,890 vehicles now use the Killarney bypass daily, up from 18,480 just two years ago.

"Mill Road, in particular, is suicide," Cronin said. "People don't want to walk or cycle there anymore."

He emphasised the urgent need for a bypass to relieve the pressure on Killarney's infrastructure and improve the quality of life for residents.

Plans for a multi-story car park in Killarney are progressing, according to Kerry County Council.

At a recent meeting of the Killarney Municipal Council, Director of Roads and Transportation, Frank Hartnett, announced that a report on the feasibility of the project has been compiled and is currently being costed.

The proposed location for the multi-story car park is the bottom car park

The contrast between the situations in Listowel and Killarney is stark.

While Listowel has successfully implemented a bypass to reduce traffic congestion, Killarney remains grappling with the challenges of growing traffic volumes.

Cronin called on the government to intervene and expedite the approval of the Killarney bypass, stating that "Killarney is choking. We have no escape route unless Minister Ryan intervenes."

The Listowel Bypass, which was officially opened on August 19, will divert 7,000 vehicles per day away from the town centre.

This project, costing €62 million, includes 3.6 kilometres of new road, 2.3 kilometres of improved existing roads, and new roundabouts and junction improvements.

Linda Gordon-Kelleher the surprise Fianna Fáil election candidate

Killarney-based solicitor Linda Gordon-Kelleher has been added to the Fianna Fáil ticket to contest the next general election in Kerry.

She will join Education Minister, Norma Foley, and Cllr Michael Cahill on the ticket and is confident that the county will have a stronger voice in government as a result.

Gordon-Kelleher said she is looking forward to working with Minister Foley and Cllr Cahill in the months ahead to achieve this aim.

Aged 39 and a mother of four, she is married to Kerry County Council member, Niall Kelleher who represents the Killarney Municipal District.

She was born and raised in Killarney and has deep roots both in the town and throughout South Kerry.

She attended Killorglin Intermediate School and her parents ran a hospitality business in the area for eight years.

As well as being a practicing solicitor, Linda runs an outsource business process company with her husband and is also a farmer with a keen interest in sustainable and regenerative farming practices.

“I have been politically active for most of my adult life and have a passion for fairness, equality, democracy and justice at local, regional and national level,” she said.

“I have been involved in canvassing for every election – both national and local – since 2011 and I have had the privilege of being a Director of Elections on three occasions.”

She said the changes since 2014 on the electoral map, making Kerry one five-seater constituency, have shown the raw need for a Government TD committed to delivering for the area and making representations on behalf of the people of Killarney and South Kerry at Government level.

“Cohesion is the crux of getting work done and the voice of a second Government TD will work to the benefit of the people of the constituency in getting their needs addressed in a speedy and informed manner,” she added.

“Killarney is my home, my passion, the jewel in the Kingdom, and the gateway to south and mid Kerry.

“There is no argument that it has been neglected and under-represented over the past number of years and, given the opportunity, I will change that.”

on New Street, a suggestion made by Councillor Niall O'Callaghan in January. O'Callaghan noted that previous surveys conducted by the council consistently identified this site as the most suitable location.

In response to O'Callaghan's proposal, Kerry County Council stated that the assessment of the multi-story car park will be considered within the broader context of the overall car parking strategy for Killarney.

Following his departure after 10 years at Radio Kerry which coincided with the arrival of his son, I decided to catch up with one of Killarney's most popular musicians, Cathal Flaherty, to chat about his band 'Fake Friends', his work at the INEC as a Project Manager and Booking Agent, life as a parent with his partner Jordie and their newborn baby boy Kian and how he fits it all in!

Developing a passion for music at a young age, Cathal started playing guitar and writing songs in his early teens and honed his skills by performing at local venues and open mic nights. This resulted from a musical performance at St Brendan's College where Kevin O'Sullivan (O'Sullivan Sound Systems) asked 'would you ever think of playing in local bars?'

His first gig was in the oldest, family-run bar in Killarney, Charlie Foleys at the tender age of 16. Cathal cites bands like The Killers, Kings of Leon, and Bon Iver as major influences on his music. As the lead vocalist and primary songwriter for Fake Friends, with band member Patrick Kelly, Cathal's lyrics often explore themes of youth, identity, and relationships, set against a backdrop of catchy indie rock melodies and driving rhythms. He has been praised for his dynamic and expressive singing style, as well as his skilful guitar playing.

“I began working for Radio Kerry straight out of college hosting my show 'Fresh at the Weekend' in 2014. I worked nights midweek also, airing mostly out of the Tralee studio. I've always had an ear for music and a keen interest in Irish artists as well as a love for performance myself. I do miss it but with a new baby on the way, I wanted to be present with Jordie from the get-go, for the arrival of my little boy Kian. The door was left open for me at Radio Kerry, so I look forward to returning when the time is right” Cathal began.

Marie Meets

Well-known and much loved photographer Marie Carroll-O’Sullivan chats to locals about their news, views and accomplishments in her monthly column ‘Marie Meets’.

'Trust in the magic of new beginnings'... Marie meets Cathal Flaherty

So, taking Radio Kerry out of the equation Cathal, your schedule is still quite hectic! I know you perform solo at Pigs Lane on Thursday and Saturday evenings, tell me about your work at the INEC and your plans for Fake Friends... and baby Kian?

“I've been working at the INEC for four years as a Project Manager and Booking Agent. Generally, my work is behind the scenes midweek, but I also work some weekends. I'm currently working on upcoming gigs for Lyra, King Fisher and Knee Cap. December is a particularly busy month, putting things in place for a fantastic lineup of events – Gavin James, The Coronas, and Block Rocking Beats

to name just a few. I mainly work with agents in Ireland and the UK. We attend the International Live Music Conference in London regularly to meet with many agents, book acts and promote the INEC as a destination venue so close to Kerry and Cork Airports.

“As a musician, I found the pandemic particularly difficult, so I threw myself into songwriting. Together with Patrick Kelly, from Carlow, Fake Friends was born. We've since signed a three-year recording contract with Song City and a €300,000 deal with AMA Music Agency, who have represented major talents globally for over the last 25 years, for bands like The Coronas, Aslan, Ryan

Sheridan, Paddy Casey etc. We visit the studio regularly on Westmorland Street, Dublin to record. We performed at Whelan's, Dublin, the night before the All-Ireland semi-final against Derry last year. Larry from AMA was present and contacted us on Monday with a deal. We were thrilled!! Our new single 'Better' is due out on September 13.

“Kian has a very cool date of birth, 24.7.24, born at Limerick Maternity Hospital, weighing in at 7lbs 3oz. Jordie and I are besotted. It's taken a while to sink in that I'm a dad, we are parents and I can't imagine life without him.”

Cathal's words took me back to holding the birth cert of my firstborn, the surreal feeling, the shock of responsibility, accompanying high hopes, together with the absolute joy of delivering a brand-new human into the world!

“I am so thankful to Jordie for everything. She has been amazing, especially the unconditional support she's given me over the last year with Fake Friends, throughout her pregnancy, which can't have been easy.”

So Cathal, will Kian be following in your footsteps? A similar career in music perhaps?

“I'd love him to do better me! I will certainly teach him how to play the guitar and sing a little, that's a given, but I'd prefer he did a stint in Trinity or the like first, then he can choose whatever path he so wishes. Between you and I Marie, 'Fake Friends' have a very special gig in the pipeline. Hoping to announce it very soon. I'm a little anxious about it but I'm excited to have a brand-new supporter in Kian and the fantastic backing of my hometown Killarney as always."

An epic challenge that will finish on Carrauntoohil

A gruelling yet inspiring charity event, ‘The Rising’ kicks off this Saturday at the source of the River Shannon.

Organised by the Irish mental health charity A Lust For Life, the challenge will see a dedicated team, led by musician and mental health advocate Niall

‘Bressie’ Breslin, kayak the entire length of the Shannon (320km), cycle 160km from Limerick to Killarney, and finally conquer Ireland's highest peak, Carrauntoohil.

This incredible feat, concluding on Sep-

tember 15, aims to raise vital funds for A Lust For Life's free early prevention school programmes. These programmes equip children with the tools they need to build resilience and protect their mental health. Every euro raised will directly benefit these crucial initiatives, fostering hope and well-being for Ireland's youth. "It's more than just a physical challenge,"

said Breslin. "It's a journey of endurance, hope, and community. It's an acknowledgement of the challenges families face in accessing mental health support for their children in Ireland.

Locals can celebrate the team's arrival, and Killarney residents are in for a special treat as the ‘Meet and Greet’ event marks the culmination of this epic journey.

The team, including Bressie, artist Maser, and musician and former MMA competitor Dee Fitz, will arrive at Cronin’s Yard around 3 pm on September 15. This is a unique opportunity to meet the team, hear firsthand about their experiences, and celebrate their incredible achievement.

National Broadband Plan ready to connect Black Valley

National Broadband Ireland (NBI) will be marking the occasion with an event on September 13.

Residents can already pre-order their connections, with broadband expected to be available in the second half of the year.

“It is well known that Black Valley was one of the last locations to get electricity due to its remoteness and challenging terrain, so we are extremely pleased to be commencing the rollout of our highspeed fibre network now with a view

to connections being available later this year,” said National Broadband Ireland Deployment CEO, TJ Malone. Minister of State Ossian Smyth and NBI CEO Peter Hendrick will be attending the launch event to celebrate this milestone.

They will make brief addresses to an audience of stakeholders and local residents as the NBI team marks the rollout of broadband to one of the last places on mainland Ireland to get electricity and telephone networks.

O'Connell donates Walker Cup bag to Killarney Golf Club

Golf legend Eoghan O’Connell has made a significant donation to Killarney Golf and Fishing Club, by presenting his Walker Cup golf bag to the club's President, Helen Prendergast, and Captain, John O’Mahony.

O'Connell, a former Irish International, forged his golfing career at Killarney Golf and Fishing Club. He achieved remarkable success, winning the Irish Boys Championship in 1984 and playing a key role

in Ireland's victory over England at the European Amateur Team Championship in Austria.

His accomplishments extend beyond national borders. O'Connell was part of the victorious Great Britain and Ireland team that won the Eisenhower Trophy in Sweden and the historic first Walker Cup victory on American soil.

Individually, he excelled at the highest level, leading the qualifiers at the British Open and earning leading amateur honours at the Irish Open.

Fine Gael election candidate will tackle traffic situation “head-on”

RARE PLANT DISCOVERED IN NATIONAL PARK AFTER 130-YEAR ABSENCE: The team at Killarney National Park is celebrating a remarkable botanical discovery. During a routine survey, park rangers stumbled upon a rare plant that had not been seen in the park for nearly 130 years. Mary Sheehan, district conservation officer with the Killarney National Parks and Wildlife Service, was leading the survey when the team encountered the elusive “Yellow Bird's Nest’ plant. Recognising its significance, they contacted Dr. Rory Hodd, county recorder for the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland.

Billy O’Shea says he will tackle the traffic situation on Killarney “headon” if he gets selected by Fine Gael to run in the next election.

The All-Ireland winner and former Kerry senior football captain is seeking to be the Fine Gael candidate for the upcoming General Election.

The 1997 All-Ireland winner confirmed on Tuesday at the Fine Gael selection convention that he is going for the nomination. The convention for Kerry Fine Gael members is due to be held later this month.

Mr O’Shea, originally from Listowel, works as a publican and auctioneer in Killorglin.

“While all aspects of Irish life are important to me, I have a keen interest in the housing market given my background in this area as an auctioneer and what people in the county here are facing. I want Kerry people to be able to live and work in their home communities, there is no better place in the world to live,” he said.

“A major issue I would like to see tackled head-on is the traffic issue in Killarney which, for a major town, needs immediate attention at Government level.

Mr O’Shea is married to Emir Irwin from Killarney.

2,000 cyclists expected for Tour de France-inspired festival

Killarney is set to host a cycling extravaganza this weekend as it welcomes nearly 2,000 cyclists from around the world for L'Etape, a sportive race inspired by the Tour de France.

The event, which starts and finishes in the town centre, features two iconic routes of 135km and 98km Elite Event Management, in partnership with the Tour de France, chose Killarney for its breathtaking scenery and challenging terrain. This is the first time L'Etape has been held in Ireland, and it promises to be a thrilling experience for cyclists of all levels.

"We are excited to bring the Tour de France experience to Ireland and offer cyclists a chance to feel like a professional rider," said Event Director Oliver Kirwin. "Killarney's natural beauty and challenging routes make it the perfect location for this event."

The race will conclude with an exciting Event Village on Cathedral Green, where spectators can enjoy a festive atmosphere and cheer on the riders.

ROAD CLOSURES

To accommodate the event, road closures will be in place on Saturday, September 7. These closures will affect several major routes, including: Muckross House to Kenmare Brooklane Junction (7am-9:30am)

Ballaghbeama Pass (8:30am-12pm)

Climbers Inn to Glounaguillagh (9am2pm)

Ballydowney Roundabout to Cathedral Cross (3am-6pm)

While the road closures are necessary to ensure the safety of participants and spectators, they have raised concerns among some local residents due to existing traffic congestion in town.

Councillors have criticised the lack of consultation with the community regarding the closures.

Cullenagh National School plans major upgrades

Cullenagh National School near Beaufort has submitted a planning application to Kerry County Council for a significant overhaul of its facilities.

The proposed development includes the demolition of an existing prefab classroom and toilets, the construction of a new classroom extension, the creation of a sensory room, and the addition of staff and student toilets.

Joy and tradition shine at Knockanes Grotto

The Knockanes community invites everyone to join in a joyful celebration on September 10 at 7pm, as they gather for Holy Mass to mark the completion of renovations to their cherished grotto.

For the past few summers, the hills of Knockanes have echoed with the joyful sounds of Ave Maria, as neighbours unite nightly to pray and sing to their Queen of the May.

This beloved tradition, revived during the Covid pandemic, continues to flourish. The grotto, originally built in the late

1930s, had weathered nearly a century of storms and needed care.

In true Knockanes spirit, locals of all ages, from children donating their First Holy Communion money to pensioners, pooled their resources to restore the grotto to its former glory.

The community extends heartfelt thanks to South Kerry Development Partnership and Knockanes National School for their support.

NEW SINGLE

Picture This recently released their latest single, ‘Middle of Love’, a poignant

collaboration with singer-songwriter Dean Lewis. The song explores the complexities of a love triangle, with Ryan Hennessy and Dean Lewis singing about being trapped in their mutual love for the same woman.

Hennessy expressed his admiration for Lewis and his desire to collaborate with him on the song. Lewis, a fan of ‘Picture This’, was equally excited about the opportunity and contributed significantly to the final product.

‘Middle of Love’ showcases the emotional depth and musical talent of both ‘Picture This’ and Lewis. The song's production builds from subtle instrumentation to a grand finale with drums and strings, reflecting the ebb and flow of emotions experienced by the characters.

Kingspan criticised for Grenfell Tower role

Kingspan, the Irish multinational insulation manufacturer, has faced intense scrutiny following the Grenfell Tower disaster in London.

A comprehensive inquiry led by Sir Martin Moore-Bick concluded that the company, along with two other firms, had intentionally misled the public about the safety of their products.

The 1,700-page report highlighted Kingspan's role in supplying combustible

foam insulation to the tower. Although the company accounted for only 5% of the total insulation used, it was accused of deliberately misrepresenting the results of tests conducted on its K15 product.

Sir Martin Moore-Bick's findings were damning: "One very significant reason why Grenfell Tower came to be clad in combustible materials was systematic dishonesty on the part of those who made and sold the rainscreen cladding

panels and insulation products. They engaged in deliberate and sustained strategies to manipulate the testing processes, misrepresent test data and mislead the market."

The report specifically criticized Kingspan for falsely claiming that its K15 insulation had been successfully tested for use in buildings over 18 meters tall. This misleading information contributed to the use of dangerous materials in the construction of Grenfell Tower.

Georgia school shooting leaves four dead, nine injured

A tragic shooting incident occurred at Apalachee High School in northern Georgia on Wednesday, September 4.

Two students and two teachers were fatally wounded, while nine others suffered gunshot injuries. The suspected perpetrator, a 14-year-old student at the school, was apprehended and is facing murder charges. Authorities have announced their intention to try the teen as an adult.

According to data from the K-12 Shooting Database, this incident marks the 218th time a gun has been fired or brandished at a school in the United States so far in 2024. Of these over 200 incidents, which encompass a variety of causes including gang violence, domestic disputes, and accidents, Georgia has experienced 10, including Wednesday's tragedy.

Electric Ireland cuts prices again offering some relief

Electric Ireland, Ireland's largest energy supplier, is bringing some welcome news to households with another round of price reductions for electricity and gas.

The changes will take effect from November 1st and benefit over 1.1 million customers.

Most customers will see a 3% reduction in unit rates while customers with smart meters will receive a larger discount of 5%, with annual savings between €64 and €75 depending on their specific plan.

The reductions are expected to translate to an average annual saving of €45 on electricity bills. Gas unit rates will be reduced by 3%, resulting in an average annual saving of €40 per household.

This marks the third price reduction by Electric Ireland in the past year. However, experts anticipate limited room for further significant cuts in the short to medium term due to elevated wholesale gas and electricity prices, which are still double pre-war levels.

New pineapple dating trend sweeps Spanish supermarkets

A quirky new dating trend has taken Spain by storm, with single shoppers using pineapples to find love in supermarkets.

The craze, which originated on TikTok, has led to chaotic scenes in stores across the country.

The trend involves visiting branches of the supermarket chain Mercadona between 7pm and 8pm and placing an upside-down pineapple in your shopping cart. It's believed that this act signals to other single shoppers that you're open to meeting someone.

Once you've placed your pineapple, the

next step is to head to the wine aisle. If you spot another shopper with an upside-down pineapple in their cart, you can try your luck by gently bumping your trolley against theirs. If they respond by bumping back, it's considered a sign of mutual interest.

The pineapple dating trend has gained significant popularity on TikTok, with many users sharing their experiences and humorous encounters. However, the trend has also led to some chaos where in one incident, police were called to a Mercadona store in Bilbao after a large group of hopeful singles overwhelmed the staff.

Schoolbook publisher apologises for "Traditional Irish Family" portrayal

An Irish schoolbook publisher has faced significant backlash and has subsequently removed a Junior Cert curriculum book due to its controversial portrayal of a "traditional Irish family."

The Health and Wellbeing book compared a "traditional Irish family" with a modern family of mixed background. The "traditional Irish family" depicted in the book was shown outside a thatched cottage, wearing Aran jumpers, and eating "potatoes, bacon, and cabbage every day." The book also suggested that this family "does not like change or difference" and that their children are discouraged from mixing with people of different religions.

In contrast, the mixed-race family was portrayed as one that "loves change and difference," enjoys "curry, pizza, and Asian food," and spends their time traveling abroad and visiting art galleries.

Independent TD Carol Nolan expressed her dismay at the book's content, stating that she initially thought it was a parody. Following the public outcry, the publisher, EdCo, confirmed that the book had been taken out of the curriculum and issued an apology for its portrayal of the "traditional Irish family." EdCo explained that the activity was intended to help students understand the importance of diversity and the Equal Status Acts. However, the publisher acknowledged that their approach was flawed and caused unnecessary upset.

Great White Shark hunt begins on South-West Coast

A team of scientists from the USbased non-profit research organization Ocearch has embarked mission to search for great white sharks in Irish waters.

The team has chosen the Great Blasket Island in Kerry as their base, drawn by the island's significant population of grey seals, a potential food source for these apex predators.

The possibility of great white sharks inhabiting the seas around Ireland and Britain has long been a subject of speculation, with unconfirmed sightings and occasional hoaxes fuelling the intrigue. While a small and endangered population of great whites exists in the Mediterranean, it's believed that some

individuals may migrate north to the eastern parts of the North Atlantic in search of food.

Despite the absence of confirmed sightings in British or Irish waters, many scientists believe the conditions are ideal for these sharks to thrive. Ireland is already home to around 40 shark species, including the basking shark, porbeagle, and tope shark.

Ocearch, known for its research on large marine animals, is cautiously optimistic about the potential of finding a great white shark off the southwest coast of Ireland. The organization's founder, Chris Fischer, expressed excitement at the prospect of making a historic discovery that would capture global attention.

Poverty and hardship increase for Irish children

A new report by the Economic & Social Research Institute (ESRI) has revealed a concerning rise in material deprivation among children in Ireland.

The number of children unable to afford basic necessities has increased significantly over the past year, highlighting the growing strain on families.

According to the ESRI, the rate of material deprivation among children under 18 rose from 17.7% in 2022 to 20.1% in 2023. This means that nearly one in five children are struggling to afford essential items like food, clothing, and heating.

The report defines material deprivation as an inability to afford at least two of ten essential items, including: Two pairs of strong shoes, warm waterproof outercoat, new clothes, replacement furniture, regular meals, home heating, gifts for loved ones, social outings

The ESRI found that over 230,000 children are currently experiencing material deprivation, an increase of almost 30,000 since 2022. Households with a disabled member are particularly vul-

nerable, with deprivation rates reaching nearly a quarter.

The report also highlights the link between poverty and social exclusion. Children living in poverty are less likely to participate in civic activities and have fewer social connections, leading to lower levels of life satisfaction.

In addition to material deprivation, the ESRI found that rates of child poverty have increased when housing costs are factored in. A quarter of households with a child under five are living below the poverty line after housing costs, affecting approximately 250,000 children and parents.

The report calls for urgent policy action to address the growing crisis. Dr. Barra Roantree, a co-author, suggests that a second tier of child benefit targeted at low-income families could be a valuable tool in reducing poverty and deprivation. Dr. Helen Russell, another co-author, emphasized the social consequences of poverty, noting that it can undermine social trust and cohesion. She stressed the importance of policies that promote inclusion and equality for all.

Devine and O'Sullivan want more European Championship action

Rally of the Lakes winners Callum Devine and Noel O'Sullivan have hinted at their desire to compete in more FIA European Rally Championship events next season, following a promising performance at Rali Ceredigion in Wales last weekend.

Devine, from Derry, and O'Sullivan, from Muckross, piloting a Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo, contested an ERC event for the first time since 2020 and 2015, respectively. Despite a late poor tyre choice that dropped them from podium contention, the pair finished fifth overall. The result has encouraged Devine and

O'Sullivan to consider more European appearances in the future.

However, their immediate focus remains on clinching the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship (ITRC) title, where they are locked in a fierce battle with Keith Cronin and Mikie Galvin.

While the disappointment of their British Rally Championship hopes may linger, Cronin and Galvin are now determined to make a strong showing at the Cork '20' International Rally, the final round of the ITRC.

The event presents them with a crucial opportunity to extend their lead over Devine and O'Sullivan and secure the championship.

Kerry Councillor demands action on Ring of Kerry Road hazards

A frustrated Kerry County Councillor has called for urgent action to address the dangerous conditions on the N70 Ring of Kerry road, citing overgrown vegetation that is obstructing visibility and posing a risk to road users.

Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Cahill, who is also Cathaoirleach of Kenmare Municipal District, sent a strongly worded email to Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan and senior officials at Kerry County Council, pleading for immediate intervention.

"It beggars belief that if you are driving along the Ring of Kerry road, you cannot see the ocean because of overgrowth," Cahill said. He highlighted the particularly dangerous situation at Kells Viaduct, where overgrown trees have compromised visibility.

"A local couple were almost killed there just last week due to the poor visibility approaching the bridge," Cahill said. "This is a total disgrace on this heavily trafficked route."

Cahill also expressed concern about the safety of pedestrians and cyclists at popular viewing points like Mountain Stage, where overgrown vegetation is hindering access to the scenic views.

"I have raised this issue with Transport Infrastructure Ireland and Kerry County Council on numerous occasions," Cahill said. "I will not give in until something is done."

The councillor has threatened to escalate the matter to the Tánaiste and Taoiseach if the Minister for Transport fails to take immediate action to address the hazardous conditions on the Ring of Kerry road.

Changes to Parent’s leave from 1 August 2024

What is Parent’s Leave?

Parent’s leave entitles each parent to 7 weeks’ leave during the first 2 years of a child’s life, or in the case of adoption, within 2 years of the placement of the child with the family.

The leave period remains the same in the case of multiple births, for example if you have twins or if you adopt 2 or more children at the same time.

What changes to Parent’s leave come in from 1 August 2024?

From 1 August 2024:

• Parent’s leave will increase from 7 weeks to 9 weeks for children born or adopted after 1 August 2024

• You can claim the additional 2 weeks' parent’s leave if your child is under the age of 2 on 1 August 2024 or your adopted child has been placed with your family less than 2 years on 1 August 2024

• You must complete the extra leave on or before your child’s second birthday or within 2 years of the adoption placement

• Parent’s Benefit will also increase from 7 weeks to 9 weeks for each parent (if you qualify)

What is the difference between parental leave and parent’s leave?

Parental leave entitles parents to take unpaid leave from work to spend time looking after their children. Since 1 September 2020, both parents can take up to 26 weeks parental leave. You can get more information about parental leave. Parent’s leave is specifically for parents during the child’s first 2 years. What are the rules about parent's leave You must meet certain criteria to be eligible to take parent’s leave.

You must:

• Be a relevant parent

• Take the leave within 104 weeks (2 years) of the birth of the child or in the case of adoption, from the date the child is placed with you (the placement date)

• Give at least 6 weeks’ notice to your employer

The legislation only provides for the minimum entitlement to parent’s leave. Your contract of employment may give you more rights. Who can take parent’s leave?

Relevant parents can take parent’s leave

This table explains the differences between the two types of leave for parents.

Leave Who gets it?

How long? Is it paid?

Parental leave Parents and guardians of children under 12 26 weeks No, it’s unpaid

Parent’s leave Parents of children under 2 years of age Parents of adopted children in the first 2 years of the placement of the child

for eligible children. A relevant parent is one of the following:

• A parent of the child

• A spouse, civil partner or cohabitant of the parent of the child

• A parent of a donor-conceived child as provided for under section 5 of the Children and Family Relationships Act 2015

• The adopting parent or parents of a child

• The spouse, civil partner or spouse of the adopting parent of the child (if the parents have not adopted jointly)

How can I take parent’s leave?

You can take this leave as:

• One continuous period of 7 weeks leave or

• Separate periods of not less than one week

Parent’s leave cannot be transferred between parents – except in specified circumstances such as the death of one of the parents.

How much will I get paid during parent’s leave?

If you have enough PRSI contributions, you will get a weekly Parent’s Benefit of €274 per week. This is paid by the Department of Social Protection (DSP). Your employer does not have to pay you while you are on parent’s leave. However, some employers do pay or top up your pay during the leave period – this is set out in your contract of employment. Are there qualifying conditions for Parent’s Benefit?

You should apply for Parent’s Benefit at least 4 weeks before the date you start your parent’s leave. If you are self-employed you should apply for Parent's Benefit 6 weeks before you intend to take parent’s leave. You need your child’s PPS number to apply for Parent’s Benefit.

You must have a certain number of paid PRSI contributions on your social insurance record. Your PRSI contribu-

Currently 7 weeks increasing to 9 weeks from 1 August 2024 Yes, Parent’s Benefit is paid for 7 weeks

tions can be from both employment and self-employment. You must meet the conditions when you apply. You can contact your local Citizens Information Centre for more information on the PRSI requirements.

If you are getting a Working Family Payment (WFP), you can continue to get your WFP with your Parent's Benefit as long as you meet the qualifying criteria for both.

Are there any other rules for parent’s leave?

• You are treated as being in employment while you are on parent’s leave (and all other types of statutory leave for parents). You are entitled to return to your job after parent’s leave.

• Annual leave – you can build up annual leave while you are on parent’s leave.

• Public holidays – you are entitled to any public holidays that occur during your parent’s leave.

• PRSI contributions – you can get credited PRSI contributions while you are on parent’s leave.

Can I share my parent's leave with my partner?

Both parents have an equal separate entitlement to parent’s leave. You cannot transfer your entitlement to your partner.

Where one parent dies, the surviving parent is entitled to leave for the amount of leave the deceased parent did not take from their 7 week entitlement (this is known as transferred parent’s leave).

How do I apply for parent's leave?

You must give notice to your employer before you can take parent’s leave.

You must:

• Give your notice in writing

• Tell your employer at least 6 weeks before the leave is due to start

• Include the start date, the way the leave will be taken and how long the leave will last

Can my employer refuse my application for parent’s leave?

Your employer can only refuse parent’s leave if you are not entitled to it.

Your employer can postpone your parent’s leave for up to 12 weeks. Your employer could postpone your leave for the following reasons:

• Seasonal variations in the volume of work

• No replacement to carry out your work

• The nature of your duties

• The number of other employees also taking parent’s leave

• Any other relevant matters

What happens if a postponement of my parent’s leave takes me past the 2 year eligibility period?

The eligibility period for parent’s leave (up to a child’s 2nd birthday) can only be extended for up to a maximum of 12 weeks in circumstances where an employer has rejected the original dates within the 2 year period for business reasons.

When making an application for parent’s leave and Parent's Benefit for dates outside of the 2 year eligibility period, you must submit supporting documentation to include confirmation from your employer detailing the reason for the rejection of the original dates, and confirming your employer has agreed the revised dates with you.

Brosnan and Burns fire Dr Crokes to first senior club title in six years

Dr Crokes completed the Kerry league and championship double at Austin Stack Park on Sunday last with a clearcut 1-15 to 0-11 victory over holders Dingle. In doing so they maintain their number one spot on the all-time leaderboard in the Kerry Senior Club Championship by securing their 11th title.

Standout performances from the free-scoring Man of the Match Tony Brosnan (0-9, 5f) and Micheál Burns (0-4, 1f) were crucial. The pair combined for 0-13, more than Dingle managed as a team. However, the basis for this victory was set in defence where Kerry teammates Gavin White and Paul Geaney went head-to-head. Geaney was Dingle’s big hope to score but on this occasion White held the upper hand.

Other significant factors were the performances of the golden oldies of the Crokes team, brilliantly led by Fionn Fitzgerald at full back who confined the

ever-dangerous Conor Geaney to a single point from play. The evergreen Brian Looney, playing in his 18th year at senior level, was nominally listed at wing back but he popped up everywhere as the assister par excellence, setting up the forwards for the match-winning scores.

Gavin O’Shea did likewise. Other veterans Kieran O’Leary and John Payne also excelled as substitutes.

PAT O’SHEA’S VISION

And through it all the vision of top class Crokes coach Pat O’Shea was evident. In primary possession, be patient in the build-up when that is the best option or send it in accurately to the scoring inside forwards. The man who managed Kerry to win the 2007 All-Ireland hasn’t lost any of his successful formula. Dingle were hampered by the loss of the injured Tom O’Sullivan, their Kerry star who also missed the semi-final. An

absentee on the Dr Crokes team was cornerback Mark Fitzgerald, who is facing his second ACL operation.

In the first half Crokes played with quite a firm breeze into the John Mitchels end instead of the normal direction of the wind towards the Horan's end.

Conor Geaney scored a point from a free in the first minute. Crokes’ response was swift and clinical. Tom Doyle sent a great fast ball into the corner forward Cian McMahon who shot for goal. It was well saved but he followed up and slotted the game’s only goal. A nice 21st birthday present for the UCC student. That goal was pivotal and Crokes built on that lead. Dingle were fortunate to clear away two other goal-bound shots, although Crokes also rode their luck when the alert Fionn Fitzgerald cleared off the line.

Dingle trailed 1-7 to 0-5 at the break, but a five-point deficit with the firm second-half wind favouring them was well within the range of the

defending champions.

They set about reducing the deficit and three well-taken points spearheaded by Conor Geaney, their best forward on show, cut the deficit to four.

But Crokes more than matched their attacks. Micheál Burns was the main provider and Evan Looney’s darting runs upfield were the launching pads for Brosnan in particular to clinch his Laoch na hImeartha award.

Dingle kicked some great long-range points but they needed a goal. On one occasion Dylan Geaney was denied by a superb save by Shane Murphy and some clever forward play at the other end saw Crokes over the line.

DR CROKES: Shane Murphy; Neil O’Shea, Fionn Fitzgerald, Evan Looney (0-1); Charlie Keating, Gavin White, Brian Looney; Mark O’Shea, Michael Potts; Micheál Burns (0-04, 1f), Gavin O’Shea, Tom Doyle; Tony Brosnan (0-9, 5f), David Shaw, Cian McMahon (1-1). Subs: John Payne for N O’Shea (36 minutes, injured), Kieran O’Leary for Doyle (55), David Naughten (captain) for McMahon (62), Mark Cooper for Potts (65).

What will Jack O’Connor have learned from the club final?

Jack O’Connor was an interested observer at the Kerry Senior Club final as he tries to create a new management team after the departure of Micheál Quirke and Diarmuid Murphy.

Surely he must have seen further evidence of the points made in this column on the key reasons Kerry lost the last two All-Irelands. They have the best player that I have seen for over seven decades. Yet why have Kerry’s strategies failed to get the ball in quickly to the match-winner, David Clifford?

Jack has the Gaeilge ar a thoil aige and will understand the wisdom of the seanfhocal, ‘Mura bhfuil ach gabhar agat bí i lár an aonaigh’ - ‘If it is only a goat you have (to sell) be in the middle of the fair (market)’. And even on days when things are not going so well, the Bible quote provides the strategy. Matthew says, ‘Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a

bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house’. Even the Kerry Ferrari is of little use in gridlock. An old Chinese proverb offers a coping strategy. It says, ‘It is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness’. Even at club level one had further evidence on Sunday that there is a lot to be said for the módh díreach (direct method). Not all the time, but when suitably applicable. Crokes allow Gavin White to go on his trademark defence-splitting runs when it is advisable to do so, and the retreating opposition invariably fouls. Point guaranteed. Why don’t Kerry optimise this plus factor? White’s defence-splitting runs are denied in the Kerry strategy.

Tony Brosnan is Crokes' chief scorer and at the club level he plays close to goal, the scoring zone. Yet with Kerry, he is played as a defensive half forward so far from goal that his scoring prowess is nullified. Trackers and scorers have different roles. Sow before you reap the golden corn. Over 40 years ago Ger Power was a fast-sprinting half back who loved to go forward setting up attacks. Even in

those conservative times, Mick O’Dwyer allowed that, but only a few times in the game when it was safe to do so, and one had someone else providing the cover.

In Croke Park and in the Fitzgerald Stadium, a half forward playing in the orthodox position will not and cannot score. He is at least 85 yards from the posts. In the All-Ireland final the Kerry ladies did some short passing around the middle until the opportunity arose and then sent the ball into the scoring full forward line. Final score: Kerry 3-14 Galway 0-11. Even though the above strategies may not guarantee success in 2025, Kerry could well have been bidding for the four-in-a-row.

ATTENDANCES

Back to the comments of our man on the hill of the Fitzgerald Stadium over the past few years, the man who said to me: “I wouldn’t cross the road any more to go up to the Park and watch that modern game, aping the worst elements of soccer and basketball, not football where you use the foot. Boring and in no way entertaining, tippy tappy across the middle of the field and back to the goalkeeper.”

Attendances at club matches have dropped alarmingly for the reasons outlined above and are not helped by the electronic purchase of tickets as the only method of going through the stiles. It is a bad policy. Not everyone is PC confident. I suggested many times that one gate

should be reserved for cash on the day or provide a small ticket bus where tickets can be purchased.

I was delighted to see that patrons could pay cash or use a credit card at one gate on Sunday last. Well done Kerry County Board, even though it has taken so long. It has only come en vogue in recent times. However, the County Board needs to advertise the new welcome policy along with its fixture lists.

Of course, it will take quite a while before regular attendees return. The attendance on Sunday last for the biggest game so far in 2024 was mediocre at best. No need to throw out the baby with the bathwater. The game of football (and other sports) has evolved with some plusses, but key essentials are lost, especially the entertainment value that attracts people to any sport.

I look forward to the outcome of Jim Gavin’s experiments with the football rules on trial later this month. When we get a more entertaining game and ensure easier access the true supporters will return. I see valid reasons for the electronic purchase of tickets to ensure greater collectability and accountability. Cash is no longer king for the majority of people, but it’s not redundant, or more pertinent to dropping attendances, should not be another reason why solid supporters stay at home and ironically switch onto TG4 (great service), Clubber or don’t mention the war of GAAGO. Micheál Martin, a true Nemo Rangers supporter, didn’t hide behind typical political obfuscation in voicing his opposition to GAAGO. After all, he is not alone Tánaiste, but also Minister for Defence and for Foreign Affairs. All politics are local but, in fairness to Martin, he took a strong stand on the GAAGO (or GAANOGO) controversy long before the imminent election year taints the high moral ground.

A fallen giant will arise and stand tall…

But will it be Stacks or Rangers who get back to where they belong?
If Stacks don't improve they could get caught out by a vibrant Laune Rangers side

to advance to the next phase. Despite the past, present and future Kerry players in their ranks they have not really caught fire just yet, which a Rangers fan could interpret as either promising or ominous depending on their own personal disposition.

Two of Kerry football’s fallen giants go head-to-head in Killarney on Sunday with the intermediate crown and a coveted seat at the top table on the line.

For Stacks, although it might feel like a lifetime, their spell in the lower ranks has been short. Only two years have passed since the former All-Ireland champions and 13-time Kerry SFC winners were unexpectedly relegated from senior. To return now at the second attempt would be considered a more than acceptable outcome for the storied Tralee outfit. Many demoted clubs find the trek back to senior long and arduous and fraught with danger. Just ask Laune Rangers who are still trying to achieve that

feat having been relegated back in 2015. The Killorglin club – themselves former All-Ireland champions – look rejuvenated under Kerry legend Liam Hassett and they arrive in the final on the crest of a wave following exhilarating wins over Glenflesk and Fossa.

Rangers have a young team and that much is evident in the way they attack and defend at speed and with fierce intensity. Skilful forwards like the Hassetts (Gearóid and Eoghan), Fiachra Clifford

and Daire Cleary are capable of doing damage with ball in hand but equally impressive is their appetite for hard work; when Rangers push up, they really push up and they got great joy from their high press in both of their victories in the knockout rounds.

Despite showing significant signs of improvement in recent times (they won the Mid Kerry Championship last year, bridging a 17-year gap, and they also impressed in Division 1 of the County League earlier this season), they were not expected to make this many waves in the Intermediate Championship. They are to the forefront of all our minds now, however, and they will have no fear of their illustrious opponents this weekend.

With teak tough defenders like Dylan Casey, Joey Nagle, Paul O’Sullivan and Armin Heinrich, all-action middle third players like Joe O’Connor and Greg Horan, and dynamic forwards like Donagh McKivergen and Paddy Lane, the Tralee side have more than enough assets to get the job done if they play to their potential.

They will need to improve upon recent performances, though. If not, they could be caught out by this vibrant Laune Rangers squad, and another year in the intermediate grade could loom large.

VERDICT: Austin Stacks are strong favourites and when you look at their team sheet it’s easy to see why, but Laune Rangers have been excellent so far, playing an exciting brand of energetic, in-your-face football. If Liam Hassett has a full deck to choose from, Stacks might struggle to hold back the blue tide. Rangers to win by a point.

JUNIOR

The semi-finals of the Junior Premier and Junior Club Championships are also down for decision this Sunday.

Lynch leveller earns derby draw for Blues

The local soccer scene is back up and running and two of the Kerry District League’s top teams met in Woodlawn on Sunday last as Killarney Athletic hosted Killarney Celtic in the Premier A.

These Killarney derbies are never short of excitement and this one was no exception as the sides played out a thrilling 3-3 draw that was packed with action right up to the final whistle.

It was 2-2 at the break and as time ran out at the end of an absorbing encounter it looked as though the holders, Celtic, were on course for a 3-2 victory, but Ath-

letic never gave up and a dramatic leveller by old-timer Shane Lynch triggered rapturous celebrations for the Boys in Blue.

It was an exhilarating start to the 2024/25 campaign, a campaign that is sure to take many twists and turns before the champions are eventually crowned next summer.

Next up for Athletic is an away match against Mastergeeha on Sunday at 2pm. Meanwhile, Celtic travel to Knocknaheeny to take on Grattan United in the semi-final of the Munster Champions Trophy. Kick-off at O’Neill Park is at 3pm.

McCarthy: We need to set the tempo

Kerry FC manager Conor McCarthy is hoping that his side can bounce back from their defeat to UCD when they take on Treaty United in Limerick tonight (Friday) at 7.45pm.

“Obviously it’s a different approach for every game, be it UCD last week or Treaty this week,” McCarthy said.

“I know Treaty had a tough night of it last week (losing to Bray Wanderers 5-0) but I had a chance to watch that game back and the scoreline to be fair is a bit flattering. Bray were very clinical and hurt them in the first half. But, like that, this is a different game and I can guarantee that

Kayleigh collects LGFA Player of the Month award

Kerry star Kayleigh Cronin has been honoured with The Croke Park Hotel/LGFA Player of the Month award for August.

The Kingdom ended a 31-year wait for All-Ireland Senior Championship glory on Sunday, August 4 and they did in style with a stunning final victory against Galway at Croke Park.

Lining out at full back, Dr Crokes woman Kayleigh produced an exceptional performance that earned her the Player of the Match award.

been named as the recipients of the Kerry Association Laochra Chiarraí award. The award, which recognises exemplary leadership in community activity in the county, will be presented at the at the Association's annual Oíche Chiarraí which will be held in the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel, Dublin on Saturday, October 19.

there will be a big reaction from Treaty, especially since it’s at home. They will come out firing so we need to be able to match that if not better it and set the standard and tempo there.

“No doubt it will be a tough game but it’s an opportunity for us to go and play. Every match we’ve played against them has been good and competitive. We’ve come out on top in a number of them so I’ve no doubt if we have the energy we can leave with three points.”

Kerry have no new injury concerns for their trip to Markets Field with captain Andy Spain back in contention after sitting out the UCD fixture with a minor hamstring concern.

Kayleigh’s final performance was in keeping with her form throughout the season as Kerry made up for back-toback final losses in 2022 and 2023 to get their hands on the Brendan Martin Cup for the first time since 1993.

A TG4 All-Star in 2022, the 27-yearold was a rock at the heart of the Kerry defence on their march to the ultimate prize. The team managed by Declan Quill and Darragh Long also captured the Munster title for the first time since 2017.

Kayleigh was presented with her award by Sinéad Chydzik (People & Culture Manager, The Croke Park Hotel).

LAOCHRA CHIARRAÍ

In other ladies’ football news, the Kerry senior team and management have

“It’s an absolute honour to be receiving this award,” Kerry captain Niamh Carmody said. “It's a testament to all the hard work that has been put into Kerry ladies’ football over the past number of years. And a special thanks to Kerry Group for their continued support."

Louise Quill, Founder of Tír na nÓg Children's Foundation, will also be honoured as the Kerry Person of the Year at the event.

Brigid Laffan, President of the Kerry Association said “the awards recognise the exceptional contribution made by Louise to improving the lives of others and by the Kerry ladies’ team in showing leadership and inspiration to future generations of footballers”.

Tickets for Oíche Chiarraí can be purchased online from kerryassociation. ie at €90 (€85 plus €5 booking fee). Alternatively, they can be purchased from the Association's Treasurer, Marion Walsh (email marionwalsh10@gmail. com, telephone 087 2832018), or any of the committee members at €85.

After eight years, Night Time Pitch & Putt is back

After an absence of eight years, Deerpark’s popular and unique Night Time Pitch & Putt event returns for its fifth staging having been held four times between the years of 2012 and 2016.

The event is the brainchild of Aidan O’Donoghue and fellow club member Ger O’Connor. It came following some thought during overnight patrol on the Deerpark course during the time it staged the Irish Open back in 2011, along with some research on the internet. The event sees nine holes on the Killarney course lit up with glow sticks and extra lighting around the course to give a unique feel to proceedings. This is emphasised even more by the use of ‘glow in the dark’ golf balls that are lit up upon impact and stay lit for a few minutes afterwards.

The competition is played as a three-ball scramble and will take place on Saturday, September 21 from 8pm. It is being held in aid of the Ian O’Connell Trust and Killarney native Kevin Phelan who is currently recovering from life altering injuries.

The event costs €75 per team and is kindly sponsored by O’Riordan Home Maintenance with the barbeque on the night also sponsored by Castle Meats. All teams will be supplied with the golf balls necessary and Deerpark Pitch & Putt Club encourage everyone taking part to bring torches and extra lighting with them to help with vision on the night itself.

The organisers are looking forward to welcoming everyone to this unique and novel night, all in aid of a good cause. Further information is available from Aidan on 086 3364705.

Killarney Athletic

U16 PREMIER: Listowel Celtic 0 - 4 Killarney Athletic. Ryan Kissane, Jack O’Connor, Leo Allen, Finn O’Donnell. Having been out of the premier for a few seasons our U16’s got their season off to the best possible start with a win away to Listowel Celtic. With both squads depleted due to missing players, the hosts were the most affected with a number of first teamers missing on the night, however our boys got the job done. We opened the scoring after 8 minutes when Ryan finished off a great move. Jack added a classy second when he cut in from the left and shot to the top corner from outside the box. Leo made it 3-0 before half time when he finished from close range after an excellent passing move. HT. 3-0 the second half saw a lot of good play from both sides without either keeper having to make many saves, however on the stroke of full time Finn raced clear of the Listowel defence and finished excellently beyond the onrushing keeper. Fair play to Listowel, they kept fighting throughout the game and hopefully we’ll cross paths again later in the season. Thanks to the ref on the evening for officiating this rearranged fixture and for all the parents that made the trip.

U13 GIRLS PREMIER: Killarney Athletic 0-1 Listowel Celtic. Our U13 girls welcomed Listowel Celtic to Woodlawn this afternoon for the start of the premier campaign and came away on the end of a 1-0 loss. In glorious sunshine the visitors started the game better and looked much the better side for long periods of the first half. However as the half wore on, our girls began to grow into the game and created two decent chances to score however the Listowel defence defended the goal well. HT: 0-0. The second half saw Athletic start better and created a few half chances without really testing the Listowel keeper. However, the killer blow came with 5 mins to go when Listowel took the lead through a great strike…. Our girls kept going to their credit but couldn’t find an equaliser. In the end the game finished 1-0 to the visitors and on the balance of play Listowel probably deserved it. Thanks to Listowel for hard fought game played in a great spirit. Thanks to the ref for letting the game flow which aided a very entertaining game. The squad look forward to the return of a few injured players over the next few weeks to help us get back to winning ways.

U15 GIRLS: St Brendan's Park 2-1 Killarney Athletic. The under 15 girls went away to the Park this evening, unfortunately losing 2-1 in what was a highly contested game, the Athletic girls deserved a draw as they worked so hard it was a great performance on the pitch goal scorer for Athletic. Was Sophie O’Shea with a brilliant solo effort beating four Park players with speed and determination to slot it past the Keeper.

RESULT: Charleville Cheese Premier A - Killarney Athletic 3-3 Killarney Celtic. Stephen McCarthy 2, Liam Spillane. Killarney Celtic A opened their league campaign with a draw away to Killarney Athletic in a highly entertaining encounter last Sunday. Celtic struck first when Sean Lovett crossed for Stephen McCarthy to finish to the net. However Athletic were back on level terms almost immediately. Athletic then hit the front but Celtic were back on terms before half time when Stephen McCarthy scored again. 2-2 at halftime. Athletic were dangerous early in the 2nd half before Celtic began to find their rhythm and create chances. Eventually good play on the left-hand side saw Liam Spillane finish to the net to give Celtic the lead late on. Athletic however came back to claim a share of the points with an equaliser.

U16 PREMIER: Tralee Dynamos 1-1 Killarney Celtic. Sean Collins. Celtic opened their league campaign with a draw away to Tralee Dynamos. Celtic took some time to settle into the game and it was Dynamos who scored 1st. Celtic came back to equalise through Sean Collins but despite the best efforts of both teams no further goals were forthcoming.

U16 DIV 2 SOUTH: MEK 3-2 Killarney Celtic B. Andrew Sheahan 2. Celtic B were very unlucky not to claim a share of the points in this encounter with MEK. U14 PREMIER: Inter Kenmare 5-7 Killarney Celtic. Cillian Scannell 3, Emmanuel Iheme 2, David Ajibare, Ryley Bolster. In a very entertaining encounter Killarney Celtic got their Premier division campaign off to a winning start. A strong 1st half formed the basis for the win with Celtic leading 4-0 at halftime. Kenmare made a comeback in the 2nd but Celtic kept them at arm's length and took the win.

U14 DIV 2 SOUTH: Killorglin B 2-5 Killarney Celtic B. Cian McGill 2, Jack Kissane, Fionn Culloty, Josh O'Donoghue. Killarney Legion GAA

SENIOR LADIES: Our senior ladies were in action last Monday night, away to Dingle in Round 2 of the Bon Secours Junior B championship. On a wet, windy and dank evening, it was the home team who settled the quickest registering 1-02 without reply. The ladies gradually got to grips with the game, but another green flag for the home team just before half time extended the lead to four points, 2-06 to 1-05. Even if it was possible conditions deteriorated even more in the second half, making for a tough battle, and despite long periods of possession, scores were hard to come by. It was the home team who held firm and ran out deserving winners in the end on a scoreline of 2-08 to 1-06. However, all is not lost. A must win game awaits in Direen this Monday night, September 2nd against Kilcummin with the team knowing a victory will see them advance to the knockout stages of the competition.

FAMILY OPEN DAY: The Saturday Morning Academy is hosting an open day for all families this Saturday September 7th. Boys and girls, aged 3-11, are all invited to the event, which takes place in

the club grounds in Direen, and will feature bouncy castles, face painting and other fun activities. The good news is admission is free and snacks and drinks will be provided as well as Club wristbands. New people are encouraged to call up and meet the coaches, team members and learn more about the club and what it has to offer. More information can be gathered from Derek Pyne 089 2299769 and Justin Healy at 086 3684108. The Academy itself returned on last Saturday August 31st.

U11 BOYS: The U 11 boys were back in action Thursday evening, competing in phase two of the East Kerry Go Games. Glenflesk provided the opposition and a good stern test for the young lads of Legion. Two very competitive tough games ensued with good scores and plenty of skill on show from both teams .. Thanks to John Keane and Nigel Shevlin for refereeing the games and best of luck to both Glenflesk teams in their future games. The Academy returns from Saturday August 31st and training resumes for u11 boys at 10:30.

U13 BOYS: Pride of place goes to the U13 Boys who got the better of local rivals Dr Crokes in an East Kerry semi-final played in Direen on a wet Sunday evening. They took control of the game from the off and built up a lead that was never really threatened. The defence was rock solid, allowing Crokes very few opportunities, while the midfield worked tirelessly to win every ball and drove forward, with the forwards converting most chances into a score. Well done to the team and management and best of luck in the final. U15 DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP: Well done to our six U15 boys playing with East Kerry that enjoyed a comfortable win over Castleisland District in Cordal on Wednesday night last. Samuel Scroope, Jack Culloty, Ronan O’Brien, James Murphy, Jake Coffey, and Mark Looney were all in the panel and they will play St. Brendan’s Board in the final. Well done also to Coach Nigel Shevlin, who is part of the management team.

MINOR GIRLS: On a sun-soaked evening in Fossa our young minor team hosted Moyvane / Duagh in the long-delayed semi-final of the Minor County League. After a slight delay a bright start by Fossa saw our forwards create chances and kick points from many angles, the visitors were dangerous through the middle but were well marshalled by our outstanding backs. With the shooting boots on Fossa went in 0-12 v 1-03 up at half time. A good spread of 7 different scorers also contributed well in the 2nd half to post a great final score of 3-20 v 2-07. A bounce back win for some of our girls who were recent runners up in U16 County League. Well done to all our players young and old. Next up will be Firies in the final at a neutral venue – TBC.

EAST KERRY DIV 3 SEMI-FINAL: Fossa 2-13 Glenflesk 4-08. This evening Fossa playing at home facing old rivals Glenflesk in the East Kerry League semi-final. Both sides served up an absolute classic of a game which kept the large crowd on the edge of their seats throughout. It was

a wonderful advert for all that is great about Kerry Football. It had everything gifted scores, tenacious defending, spell binding saves, sunshine and heavy rain! Fossa hit the ground running driven on by their captain fantastic Gerry Moroney at midfielder. Johnny Myers and Ryan Lynch scored 2 outstanding goals in the 1st half to give the home side a commanding lead at the short whistle of 2-08 to 1-05. Unfortunately, the Gods were not looking down on us at the break as the weather took a turn for the worse at half time and the skies opened up leaving conditions most difficult for the remainder of the game. The change in weather conditions certainly favoured the visitors, who used their physical supremacy to greater effect as the game wore on. Glenflesk scored 3 goals in the 2nd period to put their noses ahead and Fossa were most unlucky not to raise a few green flags of their own. However, Fossa continued to kick some great points and were terribly unlucky to miss out on an equalising point in the last play of the game. When Spa Referee John O’Neill blew his final whistle Glenflesk had prevailed by the narrowest of margins. Our young men died in their boots tonight for their teammates and their club and carried themselves impeccable all year. They were most unlucky during the season to lose both a County Semi Final and East Kerry Semi Final by a kick of a ball, better days lie ahead, Fossa Abu. Glenflesk GAA

CHARITY DAY: Lady Captain Máire Ní Loinsigh Charity day held on Sunday 1st September 2024. A huge, big Thank You to Mr. Kieran Corcoran of Corcoran’s Furniture for their very kind and generous sponsorship. It is certainly appreciated by the Lady Captain and all the ladies at Beaufort Golf Club. The benefactors from the charity day is Cúnamh Iveragh, a charity that is very close to the Lady Captains heart. Cúnamh Iveragh charity was formed in the mid 1980’s and its primary aim was to support children and young adults with an intellectual disability and its secondary was to support their parents. It now has, after many hard years of fundraising a wonderful respite centre. Dedication and loyalty by so many wonderful people turned the dream of a house that was purchased in 2013 into a reality for a respite centre for adults with special needs in November 2023. Never underestimate the power of a donation to Charity, because no matter how little it all goes towards a very worthy cause. It is in giving, that those who need it most, are able to receive. Lady Captain Maíre was delighted with the number of golfers who travelled from near and far to participate. 1st Eileen Sugrue (39) 46

points, 2nd Laura Furlong (14) 38 points, 3rd Martha Reidy (31) 38 points, 4th Mary Ciepierski (36) 38 points. Front 9 Josephine O’Shea (46) 22 points, Back 9 Kaye Cremin (35) 22 points.
