Welcome to issue 9 of Jot. I feel like I say this every issue but I really love this edition of the magazine. It’s a visual feast of prettiness and goodness and interesting tidbits from our talented 2015 Jot Girls team as well as submissions from our wonderful contributors and writers.
And I had a load of fun pulling it all together. Regular Jot writer, Sian Fair joins us again for her last instalment of her Scrapbooking Bucket List and her list again inspires us to jump out of our comfort zone and create layouts that encourage us to try something new. And indeed some of the Jot Girls tried new things as they each chose something from Sian’s list. Well it’s back to school time here in Australia and regular columnist Shari Brewer joins us again for another Dear Diary and her own back to school stories. Youngest in the family, Gina is not adapting to school life as quickly as her brothers are. But while she declares she doesn’t like school at all and might be peeled off Shari’s legs each morning, Shari is thankful that Gina arrives home seemingly happy and with an empty school lunch box each afternoon. I vividly remember my sister’s first day at school. She hadn’t quite turned five and was an active child who found herself in trouble on her very first day at school for running up the stairs. She scored a slap on the legs from her kindergarten teacher (what a meanie.. the late 70’s were SO very different back then) and so she decided she wasn’t staying there one minute longer.
And she ran away. Out of the school grounds and heading for home. We didn’t have the phone on at home and the charm of a small town meant that the school rang our neighbour who picked mum up in her car and together they headed along the country roads near the school to find Debbie. My sister was an exceptional runner (right through school) and could run like the wind so had made good ground before mum and our neighbour eventually found her. They were directed along the way by several shop keepers and passers by who called out, “she went thatta way!” Eventually Debbie settled into school and sailed through the rest of school without any other issues but she always remembers that mean teacher and the slap she received by Mrs Lynch in kindergarten! What was your first day at school like? How many times have you told yourself that you need to put more photos of YOU into your projects? Personally, I’m kind of shy in front of the camera. My comfortable place is definitely behind it. But, I really want to be in the projects that I create so that the stories that I tell are not only the stories of my children and their lives but rather the story of us and our life as a family. Last year, while I was taking part in Ali Edwards One Little Word class I discovered a self timer app called Timer Camera. I think it’s fabulous because 1) you are given the option to choose up to 15 seconds to get ready for the photo; 2) there is a beeping sound each second so that you know long you have to prepare for the shot; 3) it’s an app for your phone and so you’ll always have it handy when needed and 4) it’s free! I experimented with putting my iPhone on tables, on the ground, on top of furniture and leaning up against objects. You can capture some pretty cool angles resulting in some funky photos with you in it doing what you do.
Add a hand drawn border and some free hand drawn lines for your journaling. Jot Magazine 6

A scrapbooking bucket list? Call it a once in a lifetime opportunity! Maybe you’ve been scrapbooking for years now and it’s all starting to feel a bit Groundhog Day? Or maybe you’re just starting out? Either way, challenging yourself to try something you’ve never considered before is a great way to set yourself on a new creative path: the more difficult the challenge, the greater the possibilities. Trust me. Because, don’t forget, if it doesn’t work, you don’t have to do it again. But do try it once, just to see how it fits.
What’s on the list this time?
From High In The Sky blogger and Sunday Storytelling creator, Sian Fair lives in the UK with her husband, teenage son and daughter. “I was born in the city, brought up in the country and now I seek out the sea whenever I’m able,” Sian says. Her blog is filled with scrapbooking, sewing and her stories are sometimes nostalgic and usually light hearted. Sian’s blog

six more things to try Remember, you won’t know if you like an idea until you try. • A page which isn’t a story or an event. Instead use it to record a
way of doing something – a recipe, a set of instructions for a craft project, some tips passed down in your family. If you aren’t feeling inspired to scrapbook your story, an album of “notes and useful things” might be for you.
• A page with BAD photos! The worst you can bear to use. Think
about whether you are working harder to tell the story because of the pictures - are you trying to draw attention away from them? How does that make you feel? And how does it make you feel about your reaction at the end. How important are the photos? Do you rely on them?
• A page which uses the title as the journaling. No more words: you
have to pack it all into the title. Time to scrapbook a tweet, maybe?
• A page in a colour you don’t like. Maybe you don’t have any
other layouts based around it. Can you enjoy making it because after all it’s the story which matters, or does it get in the way of enjoying the creative process?
• A page with no colour at all. How do you create a focal point? Are
you going to think more about texture and the shapes you use? Okay, then, maybe a little Kraft, but nothing else. Black, white, kraft.
• A page which is a combination of lots of the things we’ve
talked about in Bucket List (see Jot 7 for Part One and Jot 8 for Part Two)– pull together several ideas and make a thoughtful Bucket List page about where you are with scrapbooking right now. What do you get from it? What has it shown you about yourself? What plans do you have for your scrapbooking future? Make a scrapbooking page about scrapbooking.

A group of friends took us to a strip mall to a few craft shops and we were totally excited. It was at night so the photos were not such good quality but I really wanted to get the memory down. I chose to turn one photo black and white because the colours really clashed with everything else.

They really sum up my feelings for her, and this photo. I stamped the majority of the title and added the black foam letters for contrast.

Jodie York - The Jot Team This photo I took of Stella is technically a bad photo. The main subject is totally out of focus and the focus being the yucky roller doors on our shed out the back of our cottage. But the story that it tells totally nails Stella’s personality and energy. She is literally a beautiful blur of activity. And that is what I told in the story. As a general rule for my layouts and Project Life pages I like a lot of white space and to use minimal product. My focus is on the photograph and the story I want to tell. So this page has literally no colour in it at all. Totally black and white. Even the photo. The result is a clean, simple, super quick snap shot of my little girl’s life as she is today.

Lauren Hender - The Jot Team I chose Sian’s first idea to create something that isn’t a story or an event. I wanted to use up some off cuts of a project I had been working on using Crate Paper products. Their cardstock is so thick I thought it would be perfect for a note book for my desk at work to jot down reminders and to attach important messages. I have added the paper clips and dog clip for this reason. This is a fun and easy way to use up your scraps and put them to good use.

Mardi Winen - The Jot Team When I noticed Sian’s prompt to scrap a ‘tweet’ I immediately thought of this photo my daughter-in-law Alex had posted on Instagram this week. I took the photo and her exact words to create my layout. I love this type of scrapbooking... I love to tell a story and record the small seemingly unimportant details because in my experience these are things that mean the most in days to come.

Anna Allan - The Jot Team I chose to go with Sian’s prompt #1 of documenting something that is not a story or event. In the end, the page also incorporated prompt #2 as the photos I used weren’t taken in very good light (gosh I really dislike fluorescent lighting!) So they were ones that I class as ‘bad’ photos that didn’t really capture what I set out to show in the photo but hey, it was all about the documenting. I am a beginner Consultant for a company that sells skin care, make-up, etc and I wanted to record the process and products used in a particular ‘face-lift’ treatment. This category was perfect to get this done!

The recent school holidays were wonderful. Just before returning to school/work we took a day trip to Bruny Island, south of Hobart here in Tasmania. We walked to the top of the lookout at The Neck. 228 steps from bottom to top. The view was amazing, the wind... not so much! Jot Magazine 45
Meghann Andrew My two year-old daughter was born a micro-premmie at 25 weeks gestation. Her only constant health issue has been her lungs, and after being in the PICU with a respiratory virus in December, we don’t want to take any chances on her getting sick. At her last pulmonology appointment, I was so proud that she kept her mask on, a very tough ask for a toddler! I was a very proud momma that day.

hello happy Lauren Hender - The Jot Team This is my little Katie’s best friend Misty May. She is the happiest little girl and everyone around her adores her because she is a delight. When I saw this cut file full of hearts I knew it was for her. Thinking of her happy playful nature I layered different patterned papers behind the cut file to make the hearts pop out. I also used the ‘hello’ cut file to incorporate into the title. This layout was a whole lot of fun to put together.

Sharmaine Kruijver - The Jot Team I’ve used a file cut from Cocoa Daisy and created the white cardstock background that I stitched on to pieces of patterned paper that were outside my comfort zone. Cutting a whole piece of 12x12 background is a great way to use up your stash or create with papers that are outside your norm.

Raquel Bowman - The Jot Team I was inspired by this butterfly cut file designed exclusively for the A Piece of Cake Designs digital store by JCChris Design. I love the whimsical and beautiful feel to it and knew that teamed with the Heidi Swapp paper, the cut file would really pop. The subject in the photo has special meaning to both my husband in his childhood and myself. It is also where he ‘popped the question’ as it was so significant to both of us. Now we are making sure that our children visit this special place by creating memories there with them.

TIP : Team flowers and leaves with harsh angles (stars and grids) to soften the layout. I used this same design principle by using pastel water colours with a wood grain.

I have loved die cuts since they very first came out. I love the versatility of cutting - whether it is patterned paper, card stock, or even watercolor paper for even further versatility. For this page I layered the branch file with two different patterns of paper to really add to the layers and textures of the page. Raquel Bowman - The Jot Team To create the ‘sun rays’ I used my Heidi Swapp sun ray mask and drew them directly onto the card stock. I then used my Amy Tangerine paper piercer and mat to piece the holes in the rays evenly. Hand stitching the rays in the yellow thread took quite a while but totally worth it when I see the overall finished layout. I somehow managed to snap this picture of my kiddies where they are both looking, just perfect for the bright colours and theme of this page.

Meghann Andrew - The Jot Team Instead of using a font or a template to hand stitch the word ‘kiss’ on my title, I decided to use my own handwriting. After softly writing ‘kiss’ in cursive on the page with pencil, I punched small holes every 1/16” along the lines and used a basic back stitch with 3 strands of black embroidery floss.

Meghann Andrew - The Jot Team To create the textured heart layout in the background, I used a stencil and molding paste, which I first applied plain white, then added a streak of spray ink to certain hearts, giving them a marbled effect. Lauren Hender - The Jot Team This is Archer - the cutest, happiest baby that could be. He is the 12th grandchild in our family and with his adorable smile, cheeky personality and easy going nature he’s managed to catch all our hearts. Profile of a Project Lifer Petra Corcoran lives in Queensland with her husband Lincoln and children April, Calvin and Mackenzie as well as a collection of pets including two small dogs called Abbey and Lilly and three guinea pigs! “We also appear to live with quite a few little geckos and not a day goes by that I don’t see at least one in the house!” How long have you been doing Project Life and how often do you work on your pages? I started Project life in mid 2011 when I moved states to Queensland. I completed my first full year on 2012. I really don’t set a specific time for my pages and work on them as time allows. Usually late at night.. but I do try to get to them at least once a week.

Do you have a dedicated Project Life space? Yes I do. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s our spare/guest/scrap room. We are currently renting so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not perfect or ideal but I squeeze a lot into my little space and everything is right at hand. Printer, album, cards, embellishments are literally at arms length.

Do you do any other scrapping? No, not really. I have a long list of “back projects” that I want to do traditionally but time and inspiration always seems in short supply. I am subscribing to the Ali Edwards Story Kit this year and hope it may help unblock the inspiration part. Fingers Crossed.
How long does it take to make a spread? This is the 6 million dollar question. There are days where BAM! I get it done in an hour! Other days a layout can take a week to finish because of the piecemeal way I keep coming back to it. I have realised that sometimes I may get a random idea in my head, something I want to try out and I can be really productive then and other times it just does not happen.
Do you print your photos at home? Yes I do. I have an Epson Picture Mate for 4x6 photos and I have an A3+ Epson R3000 for larger prints.
What camera do you tend to use the most? I use my iPhone a lot but, when not using my iPhone and I want really special pictures I use my Canon 5D Mk II.
Do you jot things down through the week or do you have any tips for keeping track of what you have done? Other than the odd note on my iPhone as mentioned before I don’t. I tend to wing it when I am putting the layout together. Part of what keeps me as up to date as I can be otherwise I forget stuff.
How do you organise your supplies? Well in my crammed space it’s all over the place. Having said that there is method in my madness and I do actually have specific places for things. I use my shelf, buckets and other bits for storage. As for the Project Life kits, I always keep those in their original box. For me it makes the process of choosing cards easier.

For me the best thing about Project Life is I get to jam in LOTS of photos. Not being able to do that is what turned me off traditional type scrapbooking in the first place. I also get to be fairly up to date with our family memory keeping and that makes me truly happy.

What do you find is the most challenging thing when it comes to Project Life? Limiting myself to only so many photos and so many stories is a big challenge. I know I could say something about every single photo but, that is just not conducive to getting pages completed and is anyone really gonna read it all? Also limiting the photos I use is a challenge. Culling photos from the many I take is a challenge for me most of the time.
What are your tips for staying organised and up to date? Hmmm… I’m not sure that I would call myself organised or up to date but if I was to give some tips that help me get it done it would be these: 1. Take at least one photo every day. Seriously it’s key. 2. If you are not good at remembering why you took photos keep a diary or notes. I occasionally jot little notes in my “notes” app on my iPhone. 3. Not too many kits. For me, too many kits can be overwhelming and anyone starting out may feel the same. If you limit to one or two then the process of getting it done and staying up to date is so much easier.

What do you use for titles?
What is your embellishment process? My embellishing often comes last after everything has been pocketed.
Do you make your own embellishments? I like to print digital elements and turn them into embellishments. An example would be a colored circle with a nifty word in the center: I print the circle, cut it
Usually for titles I use letter stickers + thickers. I also like to use my handwriting cut out, hoping to use that more in 2015.
Where are your favourite places to shop when it comes to finding embellishments? For my digital elements I go to digitaldesignessentials.com and for other elements/embellishments I like to shop at Gossamer Blue, Scrapbook And More, Becky Higgins and Studio Calico.

What is your embellishment process? Embellishing is my last resort. After I have added my photos and journaling, I look at the areas on my spread where I can enhance the story with subliminal messages through embellishment. Sometimes a simple image or stamped phrase can trigger extra memories that cannot always be included in the journaling process.
Do you make your own embellishments? I do make my own embellishments, especially if itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have
on hand immediately! I love using my Silhouette Portrait cutting machine to help create custom phrases or filler cards.
What do you use for titles? I love to use small alphas for my titles. My favourites are the Jillibean Soup Alphabeans (so many amazing colours) and the textured Prima Alphas.
Where are your favourite places to shop when it comes to finding embellishments? I love shopping for my goodies via Sassy Scrapper (an online store in Victoria, Australia). But I am always searching for fun clear stamps to use. The stamp sentiments from The Scraptastic Kit Club store have some great value products and I am now getting quite the collection!

Beshka Kueser These cards took just minutes to make and are mostly a combination of stamps, chipboard and flair.
I took this filler card just a step further and added some machine stitching. To make this one I took a plain 3x4 card and stamped â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;back to schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; on it over and over, creating a pattern. I then cut the stamped card and another patterned card at a diagonal. I then stitched two of those pieces onto another card and added some flair. Easy peasy.

Petra Corcoran Queensland This is my week 4 of my 2015 Project Life. I used the Becky Higgins / Amy Tangerine Plus One Edition as my jumping off point. Concentrating on black and yellow, I placed my cards among my photos. As always I add all my digital brushes (mostly Ali Edwards Design) and white borders digitally before printing the photos out. ON the right side I wanted to add an extra 6x4 photo so rather than putting in a flip pocket or something similar I just cut one photo in half placing it across two 3x4 pockets of the Becky Higgins Design A page protector.
With cutting photos to spread across multiple pockets, I have a few golden rules I try to follow so that the picture looks â&#x20AC;&#x153;rightâ&#x20AC;? 1. Never cut through a face. 2. Do not cut off at neck 3. Do not cut off at joints eg: wrists, knees, ankles. If you can move the focus of the photo away from the cut line by either making it bigger, smaller or moving the picture over, do it. Ideally the cut just should take place in any white or dead space in a picture. Jot Magazine 159
On my Week Three spread, there was a blank space in the top right corner. I knew I wanted to mimic the watercolour script from the bottom left, but didn’t have any suitable words. I found a free font via Pinterest and transferred the text to my Silhouette software. After tracing the words “& now” in the Silhouette program, I resized and welded the alphas together to create my own cut file - a script similar to the one from the bottom corner. But instead of cutting the file from patterned paper, I used watercolour paper. From here I sprayed the cut out words with water and painted it with Heidi Swapp Colorshine (Mint & Navy) to create an ombre effect.

TOP PHOTO | Taking screen shots on my iPhone of my weather app has been a useful documentation tool for my Project Life. For the last few years, the week before school starts back, has been traditionally wet! I wanted to record our weather situation to remind us how much the weather can affect our day to day living and preparation for back to school. I’ve combined three different screen shots into one square image by using a collage app called Diptic.
BOTTOM PHOTO | I love to have white space on my Project Life spreads but I also love to create layers. Especially on journaling cards! In this pocket I’ve trimmed patterned paper to 4x6 to use as my background and added a 3x4 journaling cards off centre to the right. After typing my journaling, I’ve layered a coordinating die-cut ephemera, a brad for extra dimension and a stamp in turquoise to carry the colour through from the bottom layer.

Repeat the same elements throughout your spread to simplify things and to make the process faster. I kept the chipboard hearts out on my desk and added one whenever I felt that an embellishment was needed. It saved me the time going through my stash to search for different hearts or other elements.

This spread is from my ‘Week In The Life’ documentation that I did at the end of October 2014, which I am adding into my monthly Project Life album. Since I usually document only a photo a day for my regular spreads, this project gives more detail from our daily lives. To save myself time searching through product, I used cards and pieces from the September Scraptastic Club This Life Noted kit and added on with extra embellishments from my stash. Meghann’s blog TIP: Stick to 1 or 2 different fonts to give the spread a congruent look. I kept to a script and a typewriter font.

To add thick embellishments, like flair, to my album, I always affix them on the top of the page protector, so that they don’t stretch out the pocket and create glare while I’m photographing my spreads.
Tip: To add typed text to the triangular space in my ‘hello sunshine’ card, I first scanned the card in as a JPEG, popped the image into Photoshop Elements and added a text block over the top of the image. When I printed the page, I turned off the card layer, printing only the text and used non-permanent adhesive to adhere the card to the top of the printed page before running it back through the printer again.

I tend not to stress and just work with what I have...it usually works out okay (and a good color combo never hurts to distract from that!!).

I love my cutting machine and if I can find a way to squeeze cuts into pockets I will!! Here I did double duty with the monthly theme, cutting JAN out of a January monthly filler card, then attached a piece of patterned scrap paper to the back and finished my filler card off with a text strip of the dates for the week I am on. I love easy, and this was definitely easy!
TOP PHOTO | I like white space and I like for white space to be white space, but sometimes it just begs to be filled. I love this photo and the moment it captures but it was begging for more! I started by adding the mountain to the corner followed by the date and then the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;firstâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; acrylic piece. I kept it monotone but felt it needed just a tiny bit of color, so I threw a piece of washi onto the mountain. Done. Before the photo just blended into my spread but now it really stands out, which is what I wanted for one of my kiddos firsts. Jot Magazine 165

It’s back to school in Shari’s household and one little person is not a happy camper as a new school girl!

dear diary. You know, when I sit down and think about it, I might actually be quite bonkers. Said in my very best Maxwell Smart voice, I was “this close” to having life on easierstreet.
One finishing high school…. The next entering the final stages… but WHAM here I go again from the very beginning with Gina just starting her school career. Jot Magazine 174
Now the clock’s restarted and there’s only 13 years of this left to go…. I may need to buy shares in Moccona. I’d love to say the start to the school year has been saccharine sweet and hiccup free but hey, just between you and me, that wouldn’t be truthful.
It might be simplest if I share the recent events of back-to-school child-by-child, beginning from the easiest and ending with Gina!
Liam, despite barely touching a writing utensil last year, finished school with results good enough to earn him a university place where he’s enrolled to study law. Subsequently he believes he’s gifted, I feel he was lucky… but at the end of the day he’s motivated, organized and ready to launch into tertiary education. I’m proud and he’s pumped, so we’ll call that one a win! After only a few weeks, Scott has settled soundly into the 2015 school routine. Same great friends, same trusty school bag and we’ve only missed one day of term so far. Swimming carnival. And I think I may have mumbled something to the school about him having allergies that day. Rightly so, like his mother he’s always been allergic to swimming carnivals and it was lovely to spend the day with him. Shhhhhh don’t tell the Education Authorities!
Now Gina. Where do I start? Her first year of school in a class full of the other knee-high darlings dressed in matching oversized uniforms and she claims to hate it. Her teacher is very lovely, the teacher aide friendly and funny and the classroom airconditioned. I ask you Dear Diary, what’s not to love about that! Let alone the fun of a new playground, the joy of home readers and sight words.
But still, she says she doesn’t like school. In the mornings I’d believe that… as there’s only been one drop off so far where she hasn’t needed to be peeled from my leg.
Mind you, all of the other children have been happily sitting on the carpet after bidding their mums farewell and I feel Gina’s daily performances must then be an adequate replacement for the kiddie morning shows they’d surely be missing.
Not all bad news though, because by pick up time her lunch box is empty (she’s eating so that’s a good sign, right?) and I find her waiting on the mat in her classroom, in quite good spirits. It gives me hope that it must one day become easier. It’s a different primary school to the one both boys attended and I must say I’m very impressed so far. She’s developed the wonderful habit of raising her hand at home to comment or ask me something. I quite like that. Just as I’m enjoying the evening-time floor shows which seem to be a medley of hymns about being loved and courageous, truly cute enough to make me almost forget the trauma of morning drop offs! But not quite.
The back to school routine is great Dear Diary but when are the holidays? I hope you’ll help me keep my sanity until then! Till next time Shari xx
