And a Happy New Year It’s a bright new year and here at Jot we have some wonderful things in store for you, not just within these colourful and inspiring pages of Jot Magazine but on our Jot Blog and in our weekly newsletter. So how did you go with Project Life this past year? I started out brilliantly. After some initial overwhelm, I got my act together and was high fiving myself around Week 3, thinking, I’ve got this in the bag! Somewhere around Week 5 I fell off the wagon. It all became too much. We hit a snag in our family life with the hospitalisation of our eldest son which resulted in a collapsed lung, an operation, many procedures, xrays, blood tests and an extended hospital stay.
Just when I needed to record details the most, I didn’t. Consequently, when things settled down, and I came to put my Project Life pages together, I couldn’t remember a lot of the detail from those few weeks. Eventually I did get over that hump and piece it all together and vowed not to drop the
ball again when it came to jotting down little details and capturing plenty of photos. Now all I need is a block of time to pull it all together. And I do intend to still complete 2013 Project Life. I’m high fiving Stephanie Bryan though - she managed to complete her third year of Project Life. We take a peek inside her album and chat with her about how she managed to keep up and keep on with it. Read more here on Page 33 We also take a look at Wendy Morris who created a smaller 6x8” version of Project Life in 2013 and we hear her tips and ideas as well as check out her lovely pages on Page 145. I had the chance to chat with blogger Paige Evans. Paige and her family have recently moved from the US to take up a post in Germany and not only is Paige’s blog filled with exquisite paper crafting but also stories of their travels and adventures as a young family living abroad. Check out Paige here on Page 70. We have projects from Anna Allan as she gets us organised for 2014 with her birthday card folder project and Amanda Hall who shares her no brainer birthday card recipe. Plus there’s galleries galore, exquisite work from our Jot Girls and as always, an awesome Project Life/ Pocket Scrapbooking showcase.
Wishing you a wonderful New Year.

quick
layout Raquel Bowman
Jot Girl Raquel, shares her 12x12 inch quick and easy layout using a Project Life overlay on her photo to form her title. Let’s take a closer look.
Adhere overlays and vellum to a page using staples. This looks nice and means no glue marks are visible.
Foam tape is used under the photo mat and some embellishments to create depth to the page
jotmagazine.com 6
Vellum and doilies are used to create a feminine softness to the layout.
This overlay was from an exclusive ‘Project Life’ pack of overlays available from Craft House. The overlays have a clear protective skin over them, don’t forget to peel it off first or your overlay will be a little cloudy.
YOUR CHALLENGE: The challenge is to add your title directly to your photo either digitally, with stickers or on an overlay. Did you take the challenge? Head to our CHALLENGE PAGE to share your layout.

WATER COLOUR
how to:
water colour distress markers
with
I love using the Ranger Distress Ink pads in my mixed media projects and the coordinating Ranger Distress Markers are on the scene and a new addiction in my stash. In this project I show you how to add a different twist to your Project Life cards with some water colouring techniques.

water colouring with inks Wendy Morris - The Jot Team
ARE YOU LOOKING TO ADD A DIFFERENT TWIST ON YOUR PROJECT LIFE CARDS? Well, this project is for those fans of stamping, watercoloring, and the Project Life concept. These 3x4 cards are also perfect as altered ATCs (artist trading cards) and mini cards as a neat touch for gifting.
the markers The Distress Markers are water-based inks, perfect for watercoloring, journaling, stamping, and more. The markers are dual tipped with a brush tip and a fine tip. The Ranger Distress Inks are activated by water and there are tons of clever and crafty techniques available with these markers.

WATER COLOUR
stamps Choose a stamp to use. I personally like to use bolder stamps with a larger pattern for this particular project technique.
paper Select the type of paper you would like to use for your project. I have a couple of options of paper that I prefer. One is Ranger Speciality Stamping Paper. This paper is perfect for distressing techniques and will give a slightly different finished look to your project. However, in this project, I used watercolor paper in 140lb weight and cold press and cut to size of 3x 4 for my Project Life style page protectors.
jotmagazine.com 19
colour Use the brush tip of the Distress Marker to color your stamp. I randomly colored different flowers in a range of different colors. You will see your stamp is colored as you see the wetness appear on the stamp.
misting Once you have your stamp colored, then you will use a bottle or Mini Mister of water to spritz the stamp and re-fresh your inks.
stamping Press the stamp firmly down onto your watercolor paper. You can use a heat tool to speed up the drying process and to “set the inks onto the paper. I always prefer to use the heat tool for drying.

WATER COLOUR
After the image is stamped and dry, I selected some random scraps of quotes, book text and embellishments to add onto my card.
jotmagazine.com 21
water brush After your stamped image is heat set, I used a water brush along with Ranger Distress Markers to add the pink fill in on the card. I squiggled some marker ink onto a non-stick craft sheet to watercolor from onto my card. Then, I tore some book text, small phrase, and a wood veneer heart to add to the bottom of the card.
finishing <<Here’s my finished card with a few extra embellishments added in including a strip of book paper and a teeny tiny wooden heart.
supplies Supply List: Watercolor Paper: Master’s Touch - 140 lb Cold Press; Distress Markers: Ranger (Tumbled Glass, Worn Lipstick, Wild Honey, Forest Moss, Fired Brick); Vintage Book; Phrase Label: Elle’s Studio; Wood Veneer Heart: Studio Calico; Stapler & Staples: Tiny Attacher - Advantus - Tim Holtz; Stamps: Hero Arts #K5537; Water Brush: Faber Castell; Small Water Bottle, Heat Tool: Ranger.

no brainer gift card Amanda Hall - The Jot Team
I’ll begin by saying I’m not a card maker. Far from it. In fact usually I will go out of my way to avoid making cards and if I do it is always a last minute, as we walk out the door type of job.
Way back in 2010 I did happen to make a card for a birthday and was surprised at how simply it all fell into place. I have reused this card ‘recipe’ time and time again over the years as it can be adapted to suit any occasion plus is suitable for a child, adult, female or male. It’s so easy to make and simple in design that you will whip it up in no time. jotmagazine.com 27
Start by gathering your supplies. Cut kraft card stock to 23x18cm. Fold with bone scorer in the middle to make a card. You can improvise with smaller or larger sizes if you prefer. Cut a rectangular piece from spotted patterned paper (or any paper that you prefer). Mine measures 6.5 x 12cm. Round the corners on the two left hand sides only. Cut a rectangular piece from the chevron patterned paper. Mine measures 8 x 15cm. Round the corners on the two right hand sides only. jotmagazine.com 28
Adhere to the front of your card with the spot overlapping the chevron slightly in the middle with all the rounded corners facing the edges of the card. The spotted paper should sit slightly lower than the chevron. Apply two strips of washi tape level with the bottom of the spotted paper going across your card. Scallop punch a strip of striped paper and adhere this strip in the middle of the washi tape running across your card.
NO BRAINER GREETINGS
Apply a coordinating label sticker on top of the scalloped striped strip, slightly to the right hand side of your card. Apply coordinating enamel dots to the top right hand side of your card, just inside the chevron patterned paper. Tie a bow in some coordinating wire edged ribbon, trim edges and glue dot in place on your card just covering the top left of your label sticker.
Did you take the challenge? Head to our CHALLENGE PAGE to share your no brainer card from Amanda.
Apply letter stickers in the recipients name and your quick and easy card is complete. jotmagazine.com 29

NO BRAINER GREETINGS
Amanda’s Handy Dandy Tips 1. This card is a basic template. You may keep it simple or embellish more. I have kept it simple as it takes less time to make, the supplies are readily available in my stash and the steps are easy to remember. 2. Coordinate your card by making sure the stripe has the colours from the other elements in it. 3. Glue dots hold the ribbon in place perfectly and the wire edges enable movement and give fullness to your bow.

From somene who didn’t get past about Week 7, I feel like giving Stephanie and anyone else who stuck through the whole year a big high five! PROJECT LIFE
jotmagazine.com 35
“It’s such an amazing way to document the every day.” Is this your first year of doing Project Life? This is my third year doing Project Life. I stumbled across this system of memory keeping after my son was born in 2010. I was immediately hooked. It’s such an amazing way to document the “everyday”. And did you complete weekly or monthly spreads? I completed weekly spreads throughout the year. I initially tried to start with a “photo a day” method, but in the end, I just did a weekly recap of our lives. Did you stick with it the entire year? Yep! All year long! I tried not to get more than a week or two behind. The weeks tend to blur together if I let too many lapse in between completing my spreads.
jotmagazine.com 36
keeping up with it all. How did you find keeping up with Project Life? Did it become a chore or did you love every minute of it? My love of Project Life definitely ebbs and flows throughout the year. Some weeks I love putting my spread together and some weeks it does feel like a chore. I’m very much someone who loves to complete a project quickly, so having a weekly Project Life to complete every week does make me crazy sometimes. But in the end, it’s always so worth it. Even on a weekly basis. I love when our weeks are finished and documented. And looking back on a whole year is pretty amazing!!
PROJECT LIFE
Did you find you were behind or pretty much up to date all the time? Nope! I tried to never get more than a week or two behind! How many albums did you fill? I filled two 12x12 albums this year (both filled to the brim!). What was the most challenging part of Project Life? The challenge of Project Life often changes depending on my week. Some weeks I
don’t have enough photos, some weeks I have too many but don’t feel like adding an insert. And some weeks I can’t remember what we did! What was the most rewarding part of Project Life?
Above : Stephanie’s very first spread for 2013.
The most rewarding part of Project Life is to look back to the beginning of the year and remember things that I’ve already forgotten. And to see those “not so awesome” photos in a place. Sometimes our “not so awesome” photos tell our story more than the “pretty ones”. jotmagazine.com 37
What camera did you mainly use? I tried to mix it up throughout the year by using both my iPhone and my DSLR camera. The iPhone is so convenient, but I sure do love the look of my “big camera photos!
jotmagazine.com 38
PROJECT LIFE
Above : One of Stephanie’s most recent Project Life spreads from 2013.
jotmagazine.com 39
How did you add your journaling? I tried hand writing my journaling at the beginning of the year, but I quickly switched over to using my typewriter for journaling. I love the look of my typewriter and since it’s in my craft room, it is so easy to just slide my journaling card in and type up my journaling. I also found myself adding lots of typed journaling directly onto my photos!
jotmagazine.com 40
PROJECT LIFE
Did you use a specific Project Life kit or just supplies you already had on hand in your stash? My album displays a variety of products. The Gossamer Blue Life Pages kit is one of my favorite kits so it made it's way into my album frequently throughout the year! How long did it take to pull a spread together and did you find you got faster at it as the year progressed? Oh man! Some weeks it felt like it took fooooooorever for a spread to come together....like a couple of days. And some weeks I had it finished in under an hour. I think the weeks where I had my photos all printed and ready to go were the weeks that the spread came together very quickly. Did you have a routine? Eg: creating spreads on a Sunday? If I have time, I try to start putting my week together on Sunday afternoon. My weeks run from Monday-Sunday, and I love starting on it during that same week. The memories and thoughts are so fresh! How did you keep notes so that when it came time to add in your journaling, you were good to go? I wasn’t the best at writing down memories throughout the week. I think since I knew I was going to put the week together shortly after that week was over, I figured I would remember most of what I wanted to add. But that definitely wasn’t always the case. Some weeks I found myself wondering what in the world we did. I do have a Project Life planner, and I need to use more often!!
jotmagazine.com 41
What three things did you find always found their way onto your pages besides photos and journaling? Hmmm...I would have to say my children’s artwork, doilies and paper clips!!
jotmagazine.com 42
PROJECT LIFE
Did you have a dedicated area set up for your Project Life-ing? I try to keep my journaling cards, tags, and other PL stuff together. But I frequently like to pull from my stash, so things get added and moved around a lot in my craft room! How did you organise your supplies? I’m an organization junkie, so finding bins, baskets and containers is like a hobby to me!! I used a variety of sectioned plastic boxes, mail holders and even a lazy susan for keeping all of my supplies out, but organized.
“I love when everything has a place of it’s own!” jotmagazine.com 43
Will you be doing Project Life in 2014? Yes! I am definitely tackling Project Life in 2014! I’ve got my album all ready to go. Will your approach be the same? I “think” I’m sticking with the same format as the previous years. I contemplated transitioning to the smaller Handbook size album, but I really think I have too many photos each week to downsize. jotmagazine.com 44
PROJECT LIFE
Above : another favourite spread from Stephanie showcasing her clean, fresh style and use of white space and light filled photos.
jotmagazine.com 45
What will you change for next year about how you tackled Project Life this year? Well, if I could convince myself to keep better notes and details about our week I would like to complete Project Life on more of a relaxed schedule. Maybe monthly or maybe every other week. We shall see. Any other things/info you want to share? Project Life is an amazing way to document your everyday and memories. It’s the perfect place to keep those movie tickets, drawings, letters, cards and tags. It’s an awesome way to record the day-to-day, as well as those “amazing” memories throughout the year.
jotmagazine.com 46
Above all, it’s the perfect way to get those pictures off your computer and into a book. The system is already set up for you. You just need your photos and memories and you are all ready to go. There are no rules and the only expectations are your own. You can make it whatever you want. Big or small, jampacked or sparse. At the end of the year, whether you kept up weekly or skipped months completely, you will still have memories preserved and there’s nothing better than that.

PROJECT LIFE
birthday book Anna Allan - The Jot Team So. It’s a new year! I love the freshness of a new year. It’s like a whole new blank canvas ready to be painted with splashes of life’s events, experiences, celebrations and whatever else the year holds. New goals are made. Dreams come alive again with the hope that this new year they may just come true. And everyone looks forward to turning another year older - well, most people ;-)
Birthdays! I am pretty good at remembering other people’s birthdays but actually getting a card in the mail, well that’s another story. At the start of the year, my organisation levels are pumping. But as the year starts passing by, those cards or gifts either become late or completely nonexistent. A few years back now, I was introduced to the concept of a birthday card organiser and I have been wanting to get one underway ever since. This year, I got my act together and I
created a special calendar style folder to use so that I don’t forget or get behind in sending out some love to those people I want to help celebrate on their special day. The beauty of this organisational item is that once the year is over, you can restock the cards for a new year and start afresh. So it’s something that can be used every year over and over again.
So if you are like me and want to get organised and on track with birthdays this year, then this project is just for you!

what you need
NOTE :: If you don’t have a binding tool, some book rings and a hole punch works just as well.
• 12x12” chipboard (I used a thin chipboard - about 1mm thick). • six 12x12” white cardstock sheets • calendar grids (I created my own grid - click here to download • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
a copy of my PDF) six A4 white card sheets (to print off the calendar grids) variety of patterned papers (at least 6” wide) vellum craft paint (I used white and raw umber) journaling pen, alphabet stamps, letter stickers black Staz-On or Archival Ink inkpad silver mini Versa Colour inkpad one large embellishment (for front cover) smaller embellishments (for the inside pages - eg. sequins, mini stickers, small wood veneer shapes, rhinestones, pearls etc) cotton thread white colour mist (I used Mr Hueys opaque white) Mod Podge pencil, ruler, paintbrushes sewing machine binding tool (I am using the Cinch) 1” binding wire - white
jotmagazine.com 52
PROJECT LIFE
cutting and preparing pages 1. Using your paper cutter, cut the chipboard and the six 12x12” white cardstock at the 6” mark. You will now have two 6x12” pieces of chipboard and twelve of the same size white card pieces. 2. The calender grids measure about 5.5” across so to make them to 6” width you will need to take your ruler and pencil and mark quarter inch either side. For the top and bottom of each grid - mark at a half inch. Use your paper cutter to cut out. 3. Cut twelve pieces measuring 6x1.5” each from your chosen pieces of patterned paper. Keep any offcuts to use on the front cover.
jotmagazine.com 53
punching holes ready for binding 4. Time to punch the holes, ready for binding later. I used the Cinch machine. Using the sizing guide, I found 6 and pulled peg 12 as directed. Pop the paper in and pull down the lever. There is now an even row of punched holes. You need to do this for the chipboard pieces and the white cardstock.
creating the front and back covers 1. Paint the two chipboard pieces with white craft paint on one side of each piece. I used a thick foam brush and applied the paint in a criss-cross pattern. 2. Once dry, use the patterned paper off-cuts and make into strips measuring varied lengths from 4 to 5 long and 1.5 in width. Place on the front cover one piece under another towards the top and centre of the page as shown in the photo<<. Apply with Mod Podge.
jotmagazine.com 54
(Continued) creating the front and back covers. 3. Once that is dry, using the raw umber paint, with a thin paintbrush, paint a border on both the front and back cover. 4. I added a small amount of white paint to the raw umber to make a lighter mix. Using a piece of cardboard I ripped from a box, I swiped it into the paint and applied a cross hatch pattern over the patterned paper strips. Spritz some white colour mist over the crosshatch area. Allow to dry. 5. I then wrote ‘a year of cards’ along the bottom edge and sealed with a coat of Mod Podge. 6. To finish off the front cover, I took a piece of vellum cut to 3x4” size, tangled up some white thread and stapled it in place. I then added a metal heart on top with some foam tape. Using the Thickers, I created the word ‘Birthdays’ underneath the crosshatched section. And the front and back cover pages are done. jotmagazine.com 55
creating the inside pages 1. Place 1.5 patterned paper strips along each white cardstock page, along the top edge underneath the punched holes, and attach the calendar grids along the bottom part of the page (ensuring the right amount of days for each month). Leave the top edge of each calendar grid free from adhesive to form a “pocket. 2. Machine stitch around the edge of the pages. Stamp each month name on each appropriate page. TIP: When stamping, start at the edge with the last letter of the month and stamp inwards spelling backwards. If you are worried about spelling the word incorrectly, write it on a spare piece of paper and let that guide you. jotmagazine.com 56
In the spare squares on the calendar grids, I have stamped a star in the first square after the last number with the black ink. Then some plus signs in the other spare squares with the silver ink. These are for adding any special events for that particular month - like wedding anniversaries - that you want to remember and send a card for as well. 4. Then it’s just a matter of adding a few extra decorations to the pages by adding the smaller embellishments like sequins and such to the top edge of the calendar grids. And the inside pages are complete. jotmagazine.com 57
binding it all together 1. It is now time to bind it all together. Put all your pages together with the front and back cover. Place the binding wire on the provided prongs on the binding tool. 2. Take the calendar and bring the back page over so the front and back page are now facing each other right sides together. Pop the pages onto the binding wire with the two chipboard pieces at the top. You can now lift the binding wire carefully off the prongs. 3. Using the back part of the binding tool, place the open end of the binding wire into the back and get down eye level with the tool as you push down the lever. When the edges of the binding wires touch, release and pull out your book 4. Fold the back page over to the back again and the calender is done!
TIP :: I found this video about using the binding machine helpful here>> jotmagazine.com 58
TIP: When adding the birthdays for each month, just write the name and year they were born so you know how old they are turning each year (if you know this of course!) When adding special events on the plus sign spaces, write the event and the date in brackets. For example: mum and dad’s wedding anniversary (11th 1981) in the applicable month.
And your birthday card organiser is ready to add dates and cards. So now you can go forth and get organised. And you’ll never be late getting those birthday cards in the mail again. Kim Jeffress - The Jot Team My youngest at about aged 10 months met a little friend at playgroup called Archie. Over the years they have become firm friends and this year they really solidified their friendship being in the same Kindy class. Sadly in 2014 they will be going to different schools which my youngest is quite devastated about.

little moments with popi Anna Allan - The Jot Team
I love seeing the special bond between Popi and granddaughter and so I have based this layout around these two special people in my life - my dad and my daughter. Photos are always special but in this layout, the most meaningful thing to me is the WORDS. I asked my Dad to email me some comments about each photo and a little blurb about what she (my daughter) means to him.

In our family, the biggest ‘then and now’ moment without a doubt is looking back at my tiny, teeny premmie twins born at 31weeks, 5 days and weighing 1.5kg each. We have come so far from those days, where we were terrified to think about their very fragile hold on life. The photos that were on the wall in the neonatal intensive care were inspirational and we would look at them every day and hope that our girls would one day grow up to be big and strong. The center photo on the layout was my focal “that was then” photo. Such a precious photo of my fiancé when he was a child with his mother in the center of Milan, Italy. He’s always had a fascination with birds and his smile is full of light and youth. So, this photo was just perfect to parallel with the “this is now” photos of him feeding the seagulls at the beach. It’s a powerful connection that goes beyond the power of the spoken or written word.

PAIGE EVANS LIVES WITH HER HUSBAND OF SIX YEARS CHRIS AND THEIR TWO CHILDREN, THREE YEAR OLD FOX AND 18 MONTH OLD DAUGHTER JANE PLUS THEIR DOG JOEY AND CAT NAMED RACHEL. Originally from the US and currently living in Germany, Paige says the main thing she misses while living abroad has been Target. “I never knew how much I loved that store until I didn’t have access to one anymore.”
What has taken you to Germany to live? The Army paid for Chris to attend dental school at the University of California in exchange for four years of dental service. We put in our top 10 choices of locations in the world, Europe being number one and they granted our wish and sent us to Germany! How long will you be living overseas? We will be living in Germany for three or four years, not exactly sure. Chris’ orders say “indefinitely.”

What paper crafts do you mostly make? I mostly make layouts, those are my favorite. Sometimes I dabble in cardmaking and once in a blue moon I’ll make a mini book. I also like to make home decor projects and other things to spruce up our home. Tell us about some of the amazing scrapbooking opportunities you have had. After I finished college I got a job at American Crafts and designed scrapbooking products papers, stickers, embellishments, you name it. It was one of the most satisfying feelings in the world to see people using products I designed on their projects.

When we moved from Utah to California I sadly had to stop designing, but I have the amazing and fun opportunity of being the American Crafts Blog Hostess and Design Team Manager. One of my lifelong dreams was to be a Garden Girl for twopeasinabucket.com and in December of 2012 I got an email from Jamie asking if I would like to be a Garden Girl! I’m still on cloud nine from that opportunity.
And I always wanted to work with Studio Calico and just recently joined their Creative Team.
How do you balance all of your commitments as well as family life? There are 24 hours in the day and I try to make the most of every minute! Fox goes to preschool Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and during that time Jane naps and I get work done. Both Fox and Jane take a three hour nap in the afternoon and that’s also when I get work done. And then after the kids go to sleep at 7pm I have about three hours to either work or spend time with my hubby watching our favorite shows. I keep my computer and scrap supplies in the main room so that I can check and respond to emails and work on my layouts in short increments of time throughout the day. It’s amazing what you can accomplish in 15 minutes!

Paige can work on a layout anywhere from half an hour to three hours and rarely makes a layout in one sitting. “Usually I work on it a little bit here and there throughout the day, Paige says.

PAIGE EVANS
What THREE products always find their way onto your work? Patterned paper, spray mist, buttons. What are your favourite techniques to use? Die cutting with my Silhouette Cameo, sewing with a machine or by hand and punching papers. What do you mainly blog about? I mostly blog about our traveling adventures, daily activities, milestones and celebrations. A couple of times a week I showcase things I’ve made. Have you always been crafty/creative -- as a child? Definitely! I was always drawing, coloring, painting, building houses out of cardboard for my dolls, cutting things up, gluing things down, etc. It was only natural that I found scrapbooking and turned it into my favorite hobby! What’s your favourite colour combination when it comes to scrapbooking? I love bright colors and patterns! The more colors I can fit onto my layouts the better. What’s the best thing about scrapbooking. The people I meet and friendships I build with ladies all around the world. Also, it is so gratifying to see Fox sit down with his scrapbooks and point out things. He really loves his albums.

“I love the texture a swirl of cotton adds to a layout. It’s easy to obtain the right colour, cheap and controllable without being too overwhelming. In this case, small blobs of glue stick were used to control where I wanted the cotton to sit on my page.“ Amanda has used triangles for both her photo plus small pieces of vellum amongst the punched triangles on her background which she has backed with patterned paper. The swirls of cotton add a touch of whimsy amongst the straight lines and graphic feel of her page.

life in full colour
Anna Allan - The Jot Team
I got messy with this layout! Coming into a new year, I like to get reflective and wanted to celebrate my creative journey so far and the lessons learned. I have created an 8.5x11” layout which is different to my usual layout size but it’s for a special album that I will be creating throughout 2014 about my personal journey . It’s all about me letting go and just getting colourful and messy! Using texture paste and paint, I have created a smeared background and used the end of a cotton reel to stamp into it before allowing it to dry. The use of cotton/thread has been used in three different ways - as tassels, writing (the word ‘me’), and as a messy tangled nest underneath some printed text. I love using thread in my work - it adds that little extra pop and texture to the page.

do you know I love you so?
Sharmaine Kruijver - The Jot Team One of my favourite things to do right now is making a little nest of thread for my flair. For this page, celebrating our recent wedding anniversary, I wanted to try something different but I steered right back to my “comfort zone” of little nests. So I frayed the twine (that was wrapped around the packaging) by cutting just a little strand from each piece.

TWENTY TWENTY
twenty
twenty scrapbooking It can be hard to find the time for scrapbooking after the busy Christmas period and the start of the New Year. During this time, I’m lucky I’ll have found some new craft books in my Christmas stocking and their lure will be strong. All the things I want to do! Cutting up paper is only one of them. So, I’ve been experimenting with something I’m going to call Twenty Twenty Scrapbooking. And that means setting my clock, pulling out my paper and seeing how far I can go in only twenty minutes. And then another twenty minutes..and then.. >>
jotmagazine.com 101

TWENTY TWENTY
the first 20 minutes So, what can you do in twenty minutes? I managed to: • decide on a colour scheme. I made it easy on myself with a
• • • •
black and white photo; but as soon as I saw that blue in my paper pile I knew I wanted to use it. My dress in the photo was blue. I’m sure of it. I picked one other neutral paper and trimmed the bottom borders of both to use as contrasts. Two papers, double sided, no more. round the corners on my background and my photo to echo the soft seventies lines in the picture. use letter stickers for a fast title. add a camera embellishment which adds to the seventies feel with its hint of an old viewfinder toy. use a mini clothes peg to pin my photo to my page.
It looks like a layout; but I’ll admit: it doesn’t feel quite like one of my layouts just yet. Twenty minutes has given me a great basis, though. A firm foundation, ready for another layer. So I set my clock again for another twenty minutes >>
jotmagazine.com 103
jotmagazine.com 104
TWENTY TWENTY
the second 20 minutes Twenty more minutes and I was able to build up my page by: • matting my photo onto white card, which echoes the
pram handles and helps it to stand out. • adding a couple of tabs. • sewing the blue paper into a big pocket with a line of yellow machine stitching. I then spent the rest of my time finding and printing out the blog post which tells the story of this photo. You can read the blog post here>>
But wait - one more twenty minute block would take me to an hour in total; and that’s still quick for me. I set my clock again: So once again I set my clock for another twenty >>
jotmagazine.com 105
TWENTY TWENTY
the third 20 minutes ...gave me enough time to • trim some ribbons from scraps of a 6x6” paper pad
(all from the same collection - no time for too much deliberating). • add some pre-made embellishments from a kit. Working again to repeat what is in the photo, I found some “wheel” shapes. • move the clothes peg over to the left hand side of the page to balance it up a bit more. • and finally, brighten up the far right with a little touch of blue washi tape.
That’s what I can do in twenty minutes times three. I could add some more, if I wanted, but I hope it has everything it needs. After forty minutes it had a photo, a story, a title and some pretty paper: I’m pleased with that. I think I’ll be trying it again. Instead of laying out everything on my page and then having to pull it apart again to stick it together, I was able to create a base layer and then a second and a third, finishing each before I moved on the next. That’s a satisfying way of sticking and now I’m planning a few more base designs I could use. How about you? How far do you get in twenty minutes? or twenty twenty? or more? Head to our CHALLENGE PAGE to share your twenty twenty layout, inspired by Sian’s project.

Anna Allan - The Jot Team
I wanted the summer themed photos to stand out and be the focal point - hence the reason why I used bigger prints of the photos that filled the width of the page. I used the embellishments to add the decorative touch and to help break up the stark lines of the photos and make them blend and flow on the pages. You will notice that I used quite a few Heidi Swapp products on these layouts too! Considering where I had just been - Who can blame me hey??

beach bliss
Amanda Hall - The Jot Team
Summer means one thing to us - the beach! We are so lucky as we live in the middle of a peninsula, with beautiful beaches only 30 minutes drive in almost every direction. Our whole family just love packing up the car, loading in our two Labrador and hitting the beach. It’s our most favourite summer thing made easy by where we live.

CELEBRATE
Wendy Morris - The Jot Team
I created this layout in celebration of my fiancé’s recent birthday in October. I wanted the layout festive and full of birthday “sprinkles” (with the color palette) and charm. I started with the colorful striped envelopes to choose my color palette around the theme for the birthday layout. I incorporated the caption bubbles to resemble the words of possible “wishes” in thought as he’s blowing out the candles. I worked the twist on stars in different textures of mini wood stars, stamps, stick pins, and plastic.

When I hear the word ‘party’ I can’t help but think CAKE! And that is what my layout is about. My big girl turned five this year and she wanted a fairy princess party with fairy cupcakes just like Elf the Fairy Cake Maker cooks in The Fairies - a kids TV show! I’ve layered my photos between patterned paper stacked on top of one another like...a cake, of course. I wanted my layout to be bright and happy and this ruffled cardstock was the perfect background for my layout. To break it up a bit I cut out a circle and attached some patterned paper behind it with a stamped message on it. SUPPLIES | CARDSTOCK: ‘Dear Lizzy’ Neapolitan Stitched Ruffle Paper Sun Kissed. happy new year Amanda Hall - The Jot Team
This is an old photo I’ve been wanting to scrap for a very long time. It was taken on New Year’s Eve in 2010. I wanted to tell the story of our celebrations that night so incorporated a lift out flap that accordion folds flat onto the layout. This way I could fit all my journalling and a little more embellishment without cluttering up the main page.

wonderful you
Monique Liedtke, Delft, The Netherlands
My son’s birthday is on December 30, but because of all the festivities on at the end of the year his party for his friends was accidentally “forgotten” last year. Or so I thought. But then on a warm summer’s day he suddenly announced he was still due a birthday party for his friends and I just couldn’t refuse! So six months after the actual date he’s celebrating his 8th birthday with his best friends.

PROJECT LIFE
6x8 style Does a 12x12” version of Project Life/pocket style scrapbooking feel too overwhelming? Take a look at Jot Girl Wendy Morris’ 6x8” album as an alternative. Let’s take a peek. jotmagazine.com 145

PROJECT LIFE
documenting life - 6x8” style Wendy Morris - The Jot Team
What type of album do you use? 6x8” Simple Stories Sn@p! Binder Album and coordinating Simple Stories Sn@p! Pocket Pages how did you find working in the smaller 6x8inch format? My preference is typically to work in a smaller album format for most of my album projects. It is much easier for me with my work schedule where I’m usually traveling on the go-go.
I’m typically snapping pictures of food, signs, life. I use iCal A LOT, iPad notes, and a favorite app called “Day One” along with posting to my personal Facebook. Then, a monthly scroll through my personal Facebook page of my photos and status updates, and I’m ready to print pics and tackle a 6x8” album for a weekend project. Did you document each week or did you keep the album less structured and just add in memories as the year progressed? I let my album unfold during the year and chose to highlight the memories on a monthly basis.
jotmagazine.com 147
What was the best thing about Project Life? I can look back at a completed monthly album in a smaller format and think “oh I remember that, who, when, where, what I ate...” For me, this is the best part in scrapping Project Life. ..and the most challenging about doing a Project Life album. Keeping up! It’s so easy to “get behind” with this type of project....a day has passed, a week, or weeks....but I remind myself it’s really about the memories, the process, and not getting bent out of shape because I missed a week or so. So, with this concept, a monthly recap works perfectly for me. I get back on track and roll with it from that point forward.

My favourite thing to do on my Project Life pages is to add a QR code of homemade videos I take on my iPhone. I upload the videos to Youtube then use my QR reader app to create the code. I then print the code off, add it to my pages and I can then scan the code and watch the video again as we look through the album.

Every issue we feature a layout or paper project that has caught our eye. This issue we celebrate Summer with this lovely layout, Summer Sipper from Lisa Swift, Webster, NY.
Lisa says, “Drinking from an orange was inspired by a blog post about having summer camp at home. It was suggested as a “thinking” project. To prep the fruit, we rolled and squeezed it to soften the insides and release the juice. No matter what we tried, the straw collapsed every time you tried to take a sip. It was an epic fail but we had loads of laughs and a lot of fun trying it.”
