Death to Sin

Home Discussion Page Romans

This page is provided for those who might wish to discuss the lesson with household members. The Scripture, principle, and questions for each day correlate with the Scripture and questions in the BSF lesson for this week. Each week the study for Day 1 is a review based on the previous week’s study. Days 2 through 6 cover the new material. The first question for each day’s Scripture reading is designed to be used as a discussion question. The second question may be used for discussion or for individual application.

Day 1: Review of Romans 5:12-21: Union with Christ Main Truth: Every person is either “in Adam” and condemned or “in Christ” and saved. Principles: •

Sin affects all people.

Jesus frees people from sin’s reign.

Grace restores sinners.

Question: Why is it better to be in Christ than in Adam?

Days 2-6: Death to Sin Day 2: Read Romans 6:1-4. Paul asks a question about sin and grace. What question does Paul ask, and what verse in chapter 5 prompted him to ask it? Can you think of a time you were tempted to sin because you knew God would forgive you? What did you do?

Day 3: Read Romans 6:1-4. Christians have died to sin and live a new life in Christ. Talk about what the word “dead” means. How is the resurrected life of Jesus Christ different from His life before His death? How can knowing that believers have a new life in Christ help you fight sin?

Day 4: Read Romans 6:5-10. Christians are no longer slaves to sin. From verses 5-7, name some ways Christians are united with Christ. Will you thank God right now for these truths and ask Him to help you live by them?

Day 5: Read Romans 6:9-11. Christians are to count themselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. What is the difference between “knowing” something and “counting” on it? Think of some specific examples from home, school or work of how Christians show they are dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Day 6:

Review Romans 6:1-11. Believers’ new identity in Christ gives them a new relationship to sin. What have you learned about God in this week’s study? How could you make this truth a part of your life?
