Life through the Spirit

Home Discussion Page Romans

This page is provided for those who might wish to discuss the lesson with household members. The Scripture, principle, and questions for each day correlate with the Scripture and questions in the BSF lesson for this week. Each week the study for Day 1 is a review based on the previous week’s study. Days 2 through 6 cover the new material. The first question for each day’s Scripture reading is designed to be used as a discussion question. The second question may be used for discussion or for individual application.

Day 1: Review of Romans 7: Law and Gospel Main Truth: Believers fight sin through the Holy Spirit’s power. Principles: • Christ frees believers to serve. • The law highlights our sinfulness, not our righteousness.. • Believers overcome sin through Jesus Christ. Question: How has your understanding of being a Christian changed as a result of studying about the struggle with sin?

Days 2-6: Life through the Spirit Day 2: Read Romans 8:1-4. There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. What does the word condemnation mean? (Look in a dictionary for help.) What does it mean to be “in Christ”? Are you?

Day 3: Read Romans 8:5-11 The Holy Spirit lives in everyone who believes in Jesus Christ. Compare those who live according to the flesh and those who live in accordance with the Spirit. Who is the Holy Spirit and how does His presence help people know whether they are truly Christians?

Day 4: Read Romans 8:12-14. Christians have an obligation to live by the Spirit. Why do we need the Holy Spirit’s help to “put to death” our misdeeds (sins)? When have you asked God for help not to sin and how has the Holy Spirit helped you?

Day 5: Read Romans 8:14-17. Christians have become sons and daughters of God. What are some privileges of adoption into God’s family? For what will you thank God from this week’s lesson?

Day 6:

Review Romans 8:1-17. The Holy Spirit enables Christians to live as God’s obedient children. What have you learned about God in this week’s study? How could you make this truth a part of your life?
