COWBOY POETRY BY H. FRED LIESE Fred Liese makes his home at the edge of Black Coulee near Turner, Montana. Raised on the Big Flat, he finds plenty of “inspiration” in the people and things around him every day, and Fred’s brand of entertainment has earned him a large following throughout the US and Canada.

Global Warming There was a climate scientist On the AM radio. I glanced at the thermometer. It’s twenty one below.

There “was” global warming. That will be defended. Read it in the science book That’s when the ice age ended.

He’d attended college. He’d studied chemistry. But did he miss an element, One called mercury?

Today, some global warming Would win most folks approval Conserving fossil fuels, It would help with snow removal.

I’ve analyzed his theories. It’s just as I’d expected. When it comes to global warming, Montana was neglected.

The climate change idea It just don’t have me sold So pardoning the pun, But we’re left out in the cold.

And there’s a common saying, That’s completely out of tune, Yes, we pour molasses But that’s near the end of June.

Disagreement will persist From words out of my mouth But if climate change is real, Why are geese still heading south?

Our state is most uncommon Banned from global talks Methane from our cattle herds Won’t warm our own buttocks.

Let’s hold a climate conference. Invite them to disrobe. They’d quickly find the Treasure State Don’t fit upon their globe.

And as I shoveled out the door, I found with great delight There’s my carbon footprint And now, it’s lily white.

Leading to the fees and dues From the group that I am forming; We welcome you in coveralls, “Montanans For Global Warming”. Tricia’s Trader, © 2010 Fred Liese

Money Talks

By guest contributor Greg Dugdale of Raymond James Financial Services, Inc. Havre, Montana

Don’t Get ScammeD on the net The World Wide Web offers an almost endless array of investment opportunities. However, you should be aware that some of these authentic looking opportunities might not be legitimate. As always, it pays to be cautious before investing. The North American Securities Administrators Association offers these tips to give scammers the boot: • Don’t assume that your on-line service screens investment claims. • Steer clear of seldom-traded stocks that are hyped on-line. Swindlers will post multiple “alias” messages to spark a buying frenzy and send the price of the stock skyrocketing – artificially, of course. • Insist on getting printed information before investing. Never buy anything based only on what you pull off the Internet. • Never give your address, telephone number or credit card number to a stranger over the Internet. • Make sure any investments you’re considering are registered with the proper regulatory agency. If they’re not, they cannot be sold to you legally. • Don’t assume that the person touting the investment is whom he or she claims. To sell, the person must be registered with your state’s securities agency. For more information, write to NASAA at 10 G. Street, N.E., Suite 710, Washington D.C. 02002 or visit their website at www.nasaa.org. JESUS KNOWS YOU’RE HERE

A burglar broke into a house one night. He shined his flashlight around, looking for valuables, when a voice in the dark said, “Jesus knows you’re here.” He nearly jumped out of his skin, clicked his flashlight off and froze. When he heard nothing more, he shook his head and continued. Just as he pulled the stereo out so he could disconnect the wires, clear as a bell he heard, “Jesus is watching you.” Freaked out, he shined his light around frantically, looking for the source of the voice. Finally, in the corner of the room, his flashlight beam came to rest on a parrot. “Did you say that?”, he hissed at the parrot. “Yep,” the parrot confessed, then squawked, “I’m just trying to warn you that he is watching you.” The burglar relaxed. “Warn me, huh? Who in the world are you?” “Moses,” the bird replied. “Moses?”, the burglar laughed. “What kind of people would name a bird Moses?” “The kind of people that would name a Rottweiler Jesus,” the parrot replied.

A mini guide to animal health

- by Dr. Roger Baxter

Nitrate Poisoning of Livestock

Nitrate poisoning is associated with livestock that ingest feed with a high nitrate content. Nitrate fertilizer is palatable, especially to cattle. It is not the nitrate itself that is toxic to the animal it is elevated levels that cause a disease called nitrite poisoning. Nitrite accumulates and is absorbed into the bloodstream. The blood is inhibited from being able to transport oxygen to the lungs and body tissue. The animal literally suffocates. Symptoms would include respiratory distress, weak heart beat,

below normal body temperature and loss of muscle coordination. Death can occur within one to four hours of the onset of difficult breathing. Pregnant females that survive nitrate poisoning may abort due to lack of oxygen to the fetus. Abortions generally occur 1014 days following exposure of high nitrates. -Dr. B

Hot Winter Action!

2010 Fort Peck Ice Fishing Derby

14th Annual Ice Fishing Derby

At Dredge Cuts Trout Pond– Hwy 117 Ft. Peck Lake Saturday February 20, 2010 @ 12 Noon– 3 PM Registration from 11-1PM 1st Place– Guaranteed $2000 Cash and Prizes awarded at the Park Grove Bar & Café at 3P

WIN A 2010 MONTANA GOVERNOR’S CUP WALLEYE TOURNAMENT ENTRY!

February 20th is the day to circle on your calendar for some winter fun, Montana style. Dress in layers and load up the family. The Glasgow Area Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, Inc. is sponsoring “The Fort Peck Ice Fishing Derby” once again! For the last thirteen years, anglers have battled it out to find out who has the most worthy catch. Join in on the fun this year to see if you can land the biggest fish! It’s family friendly, wholesome, outdoor fun on the ice - just one more way to have an awesome winter here in the frozen parts of Montana! Experienced anglers and novice alike will drop their lines and see what they catch.

The Fun Begins

Registration is on Saturday, February 20, 2010 from 11-1 and the fishing officially begins at noon and runs till 3:00. No registration will be accepted after 1:00 pm, so get there early and get the paperwork done! Registered fishermen will be competing for a $2,000 grand prize! Entry fees are $50 per hole or increase your chances of winning with three holes for $100. Judges are looking for the biggest Walleye, Lake Trout, Northern Pike, Burbot, Bass, Yellow Perch, Carp or Sucker. With that list of possibilities, a tug on the line could be money in the pocket!

What You’ll Need

Things to bring: a scoop and bucket to clear the slush, and don’t forget your trustiest ice fishing equipment. Be certain to dress in layers and maybe pack a few of those handy thermo-hand warmer things and a pair of extra warm socks. The holes are pre-drilled so you can leave your auger at home this time. Fishing licenses are required and must be in possession of each angler. Participants must be at least 18 years old to enter the contest. Once settled in it’ll cost $5.00 to change locations to a different hole so bring a few bucks along so you can relocate if want to try your luck somewhere else. Kids are welcome to fish with their parents.

How to Get There

The Dredge Cuts Trout Pond is the site of the activities. The Dredge Cut is located 3 miles north of Fort Peck on Montana Highway 117. According to Montana’s Official Travel Site, the road to get there is a one mile maintained gravel road. There are vaulted toilet facilities but it is recommended that visitors bring in their own drinking water as there isn’t any on site. According to sources there will be food and beverages available on site during the derby And The Winner Is . . . Finish up the day’s activities with a stop off at the Park Grove Bar and Café where the cash and prizes will be awarded. This will wrap up the tournament and the 14th annual Ice Fishing Derby

If the weather is too chilly to sit out on the ice all day, come meet and greet the winners in the warmth of the café and join the festivities. Last year’s competition brought a crowd of about 150 spectators and more than eighty fishermen. Kids brought sleds and families made a day of it. A total of $5,200.00 in cash and prizes was awarded and overall it was said to be a grand event.

Where to Stay

If you’re traveling to participate consider staying a couple nights and taking in the local scenery. Lodging in the area includes the recently remodeled Buckhorn Lodge and Retreat which is just one mile from the lake; Fort Peck Hotel, a historic building that boasts fine dining and a fully stocked lounge; Lakeridge Motel & Tackle with a variety of accommodations. Don’t forget to register on time, bring extra layers and have an awesome day. Spend the night at one of Glasgow’s local accommodations and plan on having one heck of a fun weekend!

And if so, what is the best approach? What works; what doesn’t? Heather DePriest, award winning web designer and owner of Montana Grafix, LLC will lead you through the maze of internet jargon and applications to capitalize on your little piece of the internet world. *How to Create a Great Print Ad - While it may seem like a great print ad is just a matter of taste, there are simple tricks and guidelines that can make or break its effectiveness. There’s more to advertising than just “hanging out your shingle”. The old mantra, “If you build it, they will come” may let you down when spending money on advertising - you might need more than just your business name and phone number to get customers to call you.
