Ranching For Profit Blog - Dave Pratt Healthy Land, Happy Families and Profitable Businesses www.ranchingforprofit.com
Free Money Can Be Expensive
Letting government programs dictate your management and set priorities can be costly. The most obvious example is probably the emergency feed program. In drought impacted areas, this program incentivizes ranchers not to destock. The result has been severe overstocking during drought, when the impacts of bad management are intensified. Even programs like EQUIP (Environmental Quality Incentives Program) which offers cost sharing to producers for practices that conserve natural resources can lead to some costly decisions. Consider the case of a producer I met at a cell grazing workshop. He told me that he was going to apply for EQIP funding for fencing and water development so he could start cell grazing. He said his ranch had too much bare soil, too few perennial grasses and a lot of potential. He guessed that it might be possible to double the carrying capacity from 250 cows to 500 within 5 years. He was certain that the fences would improve utilization and push cows to areas that have been virtually untouched. That alone would enable him to carry 50 more cows immediately. He’s probably right about the potential to increase the carrying capacity. Many RFP grads who’ve implemented cell grazing have doubled the carrying capacity of their ranches, and the more degraded the ranch, the more room there is to improve. He expected the project to cost $100,000. His portion would have been $30,000 with EQUIP picking up the rest. While he was eager to get on with the project, he’d missed the deadline for submitting projects and said that he was going to wait until next year to apply. Even then, the review and approval process would take time. He figured it could be two more full grazing seasons before they started building. “But we’d be crazy to turn down $70,000 of free money,” he said. It might be crazier to wait for the free money. To explain why, we need to make some guesses about how much carrying capacity will change and over what period of time. We know that he’ll be able to increase the stocking rate by at least 50 cows in year 1. Let’s say the rate of increase is steady over the next 4 years and in 5 years the ranch is able to support 500 cows, 250 more than it supports now. Let’s also guess that the gross margin of his cows is $400/head. Let’s say he decides to wait for the free money. If our numbers are in the ballpark the cumulative net return from his investment after 5 years will be $90,000. If he doesn’t wait for the free money, and instead funds the project himself, the cumulative net return from his investment after 5 years would be 200,000. Waiting for the free money cost him over $100,000! We can’t know for certain if the project will produce these results. The point is, if the project is worth doing, it is worth doing on our own timeline, to our own specs, with our own money. If “free money” happens to be available for something you were going to do anyway, and you are comfortable participating in government programs, you might as well grab the cash. But if free money causes you to do something you weren’t going to do, or alters your timeline for doing it, it could be a costly mistake.

Enjoying Everyday Life Joyce Meyer
The Right Time for Your Dream to Come True When God created you, He made you a unique individual and He has a special plan for your life. You have a God-ordained destiny! As you pursue a personal relationship with Him, you can discover the wonderful life He has for you in Christ and become everything He’s created you to be. Your relationship with Christ is a daily, lifelong journey, and along the way God will give you dreams, desires, and hope for change in your life. Maybe you want to see a change in your family relationships, friendships, work situation, or finances. Or you may be hoping and praying for changes to happen in your loved ones’ lives. Whatever your hopes and dreams may be, God wants to help you fulfill His purposes in your life. But He usually won’t tell you when those things will come to pass because you have to go through a season of preparation to be ready for them. My Crazy Dream I remember when God put His dream in my heart in 1976 to teach the Bible to people all over the world. It seemed crazy because I was nobody from nowhere with a twelfth-grade education who almost failed English, and I hadn’t been to Bible college or seminary. But I knew in my heart that God wanted to use me to preach the Gospel. When God speaks something to your heart, as crazy as it may seem, you can believe it! You have a passion to do it, it’s on your mind a lot, and you will sacrifice anything to get it. From the day God revealed His call on my life, I have wanted to teach His Word more than anything else in the world. But it didn’t happen overnight. There were years of preparation I had to go through to get to the point where I could do what I’m doing today. It wasn’t easy because I wanted my ministry to grow so badly and I couldn’t understand why it was taking so long. But during these years, I learned what it means to really trust God and know that He will do the best thing for me at the right time. There are examples in the Bible of people who had to wait for God to fulfill their dreams: • Moses wanted to deliver his people from slavery in Egypt and he spent 40 years in the desert before he was ready. • Joseph spent 13 years in prison for something he didn’t do before God gave him favor with Pharaoh, who gave him a position of authority over all the land of Egypt. • David was anointed to be king 20 years before he sat on the throne. God wants to give us favor and the ability to fulfill our destinies, and He will do so as we learn to trust His timing with a good attitude. You Can’t Rush God People are often in a hurry to reach their goals, but God is not. I’ve discovered that being frustrated about how long I have to wait will never make God hurry. God knows what we need to go through to prepare us to walk in His plans. The best thing we can do during these times is learn to wait patiently, trusting God’s timing. Waiting patiently is not just waiting; it’s how we act while we’re waiting. The training, or preparation, we go through in the process of reaching our dream teaches us how to trust God and wait on His timing with a good attitude. Psalm 31:14-15 (NIV) says, “I trust in you, Lord; I say, ‘You are my God.’ My times are in your hands.” And Habakkuk 2:3 (AMP) says, “For the vision is yet for the appointed [future] time…. Even though it delays, wait [patiently] for it, because it will certainly come; it will not delay.” These verses encourage us to be determined to trust God and wait on Him for His perfect timing. When it seems the dream He’s put in your heart is delayed, you can stir up your hope in Christ for change to happen because God is faithful. Your Destiny Is Beautiful in God’s Time We will be tempted to try and make things happen in our own effort sometimes, but when we give in to it, we put off God’s answer even longer. Your journey may be long, but you can enjoy it if you’ll make up your mind to trust God. Don’t be moved emotionally and try to give birth to your dream prematurely. Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NIV) tells us, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” And verse 11 says, “He has made everything beautiful in its time….” The changes and breakthroughs we are praying for will certainly come as we wait on God. And they will be beautiful in the right time, but not outside of God’s timing. Choose to live in the rest of God…peaceful in the midst of the storms of life and the seasons of waiting for change. Enjoy the freedom of not having to know everything or have everything figured out. Instead, replace frustration with trust that God is good, He knows what He’s doing, and He will do the best thing for you at the right time! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Basketball Make Annual Pilgrimage to Annual Playoffs Montana's High School Basketball season is winding to a finish and teams all across the HiLine will be gearing up for tournament action as conference titles are declared one high school gymnasium at a time. The proverbial “second season” begins mid-February with tournament action across the Treasure State from Shelby to Great Falls, Cutbank to Malta, and many gyms in-between. Rankings are now being determined, but really, every team starts playoffs with a clean slate. Student-athletes, coaches, referees, managers, cheerleaders, band members, parents and families of athletes, school administrators, and hometown proud fans will loyally make their respective pilgrimages to support their teams. High school basketball season is often considered an extended family reunion of basketball-loving "relatives" near and far--a time to come together and celebrate studentathletes and support hometown teams. The anticipation of meeting rivals and distant relations is well worth the long drives through Montana's wintriest months, as the tournaments are often the most long-awaited trips of the entire year. As the anticipation builds for the State tournaments at Billings, Bozeman, Butte, and Missoula, the caravans of busses and vehicles will be noticeable along our highways. Throughout the following weeks, newcomers and old friends will visit host towns to support their teams! Montana tourism is a year-round revenue builder, and local businesses are ready to welcome basketball fans this year! Local lodging, spas and salons, and those stores that you can only find “there” are sprucing up their inventory. Restaurants and lounges are bringing out their seasonal menu and extra seating. Convenience store filling stations are waiting to see travelers along the road to their team's next game. We wish all our area teams the best in competition, and encourage all fans to enjoy their visits to host towns. An exciting time is surely ahead.

DAVE SAYS: Dave Ramsey is a personal money management expert, popular national radio personality and the author of three New York Times bestsellers – The Total Money Makeover, Financial Peace Revisited and More Than Enough. In them, Ramsey exemplifies his life’s work of teaching others how to be financially responsible, so they can acquire enough wealth to take care of loved ones, live prosperously into old age, and give generously to others.
There's no magic pill Dear Dave, My wife and I made a resolution this year to pay off $20,000 in credit card debt we’ve accumulated. I want us to follow your plan, and live on a really tight budget. She wants us to use a debt consolidation company, like some of her friends have done. I’m really against her idea, but how can I change her mind? - Blake

Dear Blake, I’m glad you two have made the decision to get out of debt, and gain control of your finances. When it comes to this sort of thing, it’s wise to remember there’s no magic pill. No debt consolidation company is going to get you out of debt and help you stay out of debt. The answer is learning how to control yourself and your behavior with money. Using a debt consolidation company seems appealing, because there’s usually a lower monthly payment or lower interest rate attached. The problem in most cases, however, is the lower payment or interest rate exists only because the term is extended. You might pay a little less each month, but you end up staying in debt longer. There are other problems involved in using debt consolidation companies, too. For one thing, it can trash your credit for a long time when it comes to buying a car or a house. For these reasons I sometimes refer to it as a CON-solidation, because the whole thing is basically a con. They make you think you’re really doing something about your debt problem, but the debt—and all the bad habits that caused it—are still there. My guess is your wife’s friends think using a debt consolidation company is an easy, harmless way to get out of a financial mess. But sometimes you’ve got to be an adult, admit the mistakes you’ve made, and do what it takes to straighten things out. This kind of thing isn’t a math issue. It’s a behavior issue. Making the decision to get out of debt and never go back there again, by living on a really tight budget and making sacrifices, is the best way to fix this mess and learn a lesson in the process. Live like no one else, so that later, you can live—and give—like no one else. Stay away from debt consolidation companies, Blake. Doing this the right way is worth it! —Dave

When Tom and Tammy LaFond first broke ground to tear down the old car wash where the State Farm Building in Havre now sits, they already had a solid foundation built for themselves in business and life. “Our goal was to add commerce to the Havre economy,” said Mr. LaFond about the vision he and Tammy had when they decided to pursue their third business venture to build the State Farm Building and lease part of the property to local businesses. Tom's journey as a businessman started in a non-typical way. After graduating from Malta High School in 1984, he went on to serve our country in the United States Marine Corps. After his tour that took him to North Carolina and Japan, he returned home to Montana and pursued a degree from the University of Montana in Business Management with an emphasis in Business Administration. After college, he found himself in what he calls, the beginning of his “round-about way into the business world.” First, he bought and ran Stretch's Pizza, which was first located in Roundup, where he met his wife, Tammy. After 6 months in central Montana, they relocated their family and Stretch's Pizza to Malta, where they operated that enterprise successfully for a decade before selling the company. Tom worked for Big Flat Electric Cooperative as an apprentice between 2001 and 2012. During this time, he also served in Iraq in the 163rd Infantry for a year and a half. After returning from Iraq, the death of Tammy's late uncle in 2012 led them to operating her family's farm just north of Dodson. Farm life taught Tom that he wasn't perhaps the best at farming, but that being a businessman was in his future. He trained with State Farm Insurance between California and Montana before working with an agent in Helena, bringing him to his first turn at the insurance industry. Tom and Tammy first started their Insurance business, like many, renting a small building in Havre. As business people, they both knew that this was not the best option. So they sold everything to buy the property at their current location to build the existing structure. Currently, they have a barbershop and beauty salon in the extra square footage with one storefront preparing for its next business. Tom says his biggest accomplishment is his family that he and his wife of 25 years have made together. Both of their children, Jessen and Josie are successful individuals in their own right. Business aside, “we love being together as a family to enjoy our precious time spent.”

the entire team makes it to the game and back protected from the hazards along the road. Whether your student is traveling on the team bus or your extended fan family is riding along with Mom & Dad, you all want to be free from danger! Basic winter automobile travel advice from the Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA*) is an easy way to check your P's: PREPARE for the trip, PROTECT yourself, & PREVENT crashes on the road. Prepare for the trip ahead of time by planning and following up with regular & seasonal car maintenance, prepare a winter road ready emergency kit, and practice cold weather driving in a variety of conditions. Protect yourself and your loved ones by always buckling up children under 12 in the backseat, avoid placing a rear-facing infant seat in the front of your vehicle, and buckling up your self! Prevent crashes on the road by staying sober behind the wheel, avoid fatigue by staying well rested and rotate drivers if possible. Basketball tournament events draw large crowds for part of the year. Watch out for pedestrians around parking areas, school and arena entrances, and in towns you may not be familiarized with well. Encourage your children to wear bright, reflective clothing. Never leave your children unattended at large gatherings. Travel safely, and enjoy visiting old and new friends! Go, Teams! *Source: osha.gov website "Safe Winter Driving-OSHA"
