The 71st Montana Seed Show is scheduled for March 12, 13, & 14, and planning is underway. The event was first organized in 1949 the same year as the Harlem FFA or Snake Butte FFA organization, and the Seed Show continues to remain the only one still going on in the state. Interested individuals, groups, and organizations who want to host a booth at the Show can reserve a space for only $50 for a 5'x8' space. Contact the Seed Show Planning Committee via their Facebook page or by e-mail at montanaseedshow@ group.facebook.com to register your booth for the March event. Paul & Kellie Rassmussen are eager to hear from new and returning Seed Show participants to push up their sleeves and “dig into” the task of getting ready for this annual favorite to promote agribusiness, healthy lifestyle choices, and other educational outreach to the hi-line. Planning and call for volunteers meetings will be open to the public; information will be posted to the group's Facebook page or is available by stopping by Richman Insurance or The Clothing Company in Harlem. Quilt Show entries will be accepted through March 6th at Richman Insurance in Harlem. Additional contacts to get more information include Sharon Goodrich 379-2663 or Carla Becker 353-2256 or 353-2213. The dates for the Quilt Show will be Friday, March 13th and Saturday, March 14th. A Health Fair will be provided, in part, by the “It Starts With Me” health organization from Missoula. To register for screenings, call 1-800-217-5866 or visit www.itstartswithme. com. The Women's Interest group will hold an interest meeting and host the Montana Actors' Theatre (MAT) on Saturday, March 14th @ 11 a.m., location at the Harlem High School TBA. The interest meeting will host a free presentation of the MAT production of “Mama Mia” and include refreshments. The Men's Interest Group will host an event on Friday, March 13th with an agricultural focus; last year the Men's Group invited a speaker from Purdue. Watch the next issue of Tricia's Trader for a complete schedule and further items of interest for the 2020 Montana Seed Show.

Ranching For Profit Blog - Dave Pratt Healthy Land, Happy Families and Profitable Businesses www.ranchingforprofit.com
Smart Debt
A lot of people tell me that they want to be “debt free.” They are tired of making big interest payments on land, livestock, machinery and their operating note. They have had too many sleepless nights worrying about making the next payment. They believe that if they didn’t have to borrow money they would be more profitable and financially secure. But the proper use of debt makes us more profitable, not less. And being debt free doesn’t make us financially secure. In fact, for most of us, short of winning the lottery, the appropriate use of debt is our only realistic path to financial security. The problem isn’t debt, it’s our misuse of debt. The two most common ways we misuse debt are: We put finance first and economics a distant second We use debt on the wrong things. Using debt effectively begins with understanding the difference between economics and finance. It boils down to this: In economics we ask, “Is this profitable?” In finance we ask, “Can I afford to do it?” If we are going to be smart about our use of debt, economics must come first. If it isn’t profitable you don’t have to worry about how you’ll pay for it, because you shouldn’t do it in the first place. When RFP grads evaluate the profitability of a livestock enterprise they include opportunity interest on the herd as a direct cost in the calculation. If the enterprise has a healthy gross margin it tells us that borrowing money to expand the herd will increase profit. If we haven’t included opportunity interest in our calculation we can’t be sure if expanding the herd is a good idea. The other problem is that people use debt on the wrong things. There are two primary places where we put money in our businesses: fixed assets and working capital. Simply put, fixed assets are things we intend to keep (e.g. land, cows, infrastructure, vehicles, equipment). Working capital is the money tied up in things we intend to sell (e.g. calves). Most of us have most of our money invested in fixed assets. This is the biggest financial problem in agriculture. It’s a problem because when most of our money is tied up in things we intend to keep, we have relatively little to sell and generate very little income relative to the value of our assets. Making matters worse, a lot of the income that we do create gets spent maintaining the fixed assets. That’s why most ranchers are wealthy on their balance sheet and broke in their bank account. Borrowing to buy fixed assets may be a smart long-term investment strategy, but it might cause you to go belly-up in the short term. We’d be better off to use debt to buy assets that directly produce income. We shouldn’t be afraid to borrow money, provided the economics of our enterprise is rock-solid and we use the borrowed money to buy income producing assets. Did You Know? Expectations That Build a Great Marriage My husband, Dave, and I have been married over 50 years, and I can honestly say we have a great marriage. But it didn’t start out that way. Like many people, I learned that it takes effort and a willingness to let God change us if we’re going to have a healthy marriage. One of the most important things we can do is examine our expectations. Having unrealistic expectations can sabotage a marriage before it ever begins. So many people enter marriage expecting their spouse to be something they are not. Or they have the unrealistic expectation that he or she will be able to keep them happy all of the time. For starters, I think it’s important to realize that the way you feel when you’re dating is different than how you’ll feel after you’ve been married for a while. In the beginning, everything is new and exciting, and emotions are running high. But a day will come when all of those emotions won’t necessarily be there, and that’s okay. For instance, just because I don’t melt into the carpet every time Dave walks into the room, it doesn’t mean I love him any less than before. In fact, I love him more. Our love is deeper because it’s based on years of experience and getting to know each other. We have a quality of relationship now that is so much greater than when we first met. The key to building a healthy marriage to Dave has been a serious commitment to be as close to God as I can possibly be. Maturing spiritually in Christ has changed me in wonderful ways that have healed and restored my soul and filled me with His love. In Ephesians 3:17 (AMP), the apostle Paul prayed for the church in Ephesus, “that Christ may dwell in your hearts through your faith” and that they would be “[deeply] rooted and [securely] grounded in love.” Being changed by the love of God has given me the ability to love Dave the way I should love him, rather than expecting him to be everything I think he should be. It’s become a long-standing joke—especially for women—that we look at the person we’re going to marry and think, I can change them. Sadly, this is the way I viewed my husband during the early years of our marriage. Dave and I have completely opposite personalities. He’s naturally laid-back and easygoing, always looking at the bright side of things. I’m more of your typical “Type A” personality. I’m highly motivated but can also be too harsh and insensitive. Well, for years, I tried to get Dave to be more aggressive like me, especially when it came to stepping out into new things. He would inevitably say, “Joyce, you’re always out ahead of God.” And I would reply, “And you’re always ten miles behind Him!” On one occasion, after I continued to criticize his behavior, Dave finally said, “Joyce, you better be glad I’m this way. Because if I wasn’t, you wouldn’t be doing what you’re doing.” And he’s right! The Lord used this experience to show me the dangers of nit-picking Dave about things I perceive as weaknesses. Even if Dave does need to change in an area, God is the only One who can change him—my pestering will only make things worse and drive a wedge between us. I used to just pray for God to change Dave. Now, I pray more like this: “God, I would really like for Dave to change in this area, but maybe he’s not the problem—maybe it’s my attitude. So, first, I ask You to change anything in me that needs to be changed. If there’s something Dave needs to change, I pray that You will work in that area of his life. In the meantime, please help me to focus on all of the great things about my husband.” If you’re constantly trying to change your spouse, you end up focusing on all of their weaknesses and things you don’t like. And you’ll overlook their strengths and good qualities. Dave is a great husband, and I honestly have no complaints. But if I just focused on the things that annoy me from time to time, I would eventually see nothing else and make myself miserable. But when I focus on the good things and everything I really like about him, it produces feelings of gratitude, love and joy...and the “bad stuff” suddenly seems less important. Take a moment right now and pray for your spouse. Commit your relationship to the Lord and ask Him to help you focus on everything you like about them. No one is perfect, but when you choose to love your spouse for who they are, you open the door for God to bless your marriage in amazing ways. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For more on this topic, order Joyce’s four-CD series Sit, Stand, Walk, Run. Blaine County Conservation District Welcomes New Supervisor In January, Tyrel Obrecht of Turner was recommended by the Blaine County Conservation District (BCCD) to fill the position held by his grandfather, Sonny Obrecht who served as the Urban Representative for Harlem and the Big Flat area. The Harlem City Council voted on Monday, February 10th to select Mr. Tyrel Obrecht following the BCCD recommendation. Mr. Tyrel Obrecht was recommended as an excellent representative for the area because of his passion to be a great steward of the land as well as his extensive knowledge of our local natural resources issues. The Blaine County Conservation District is one of nearly 3000 groups nationwide that provide for local control of natural resource management programs and maintenance. These districts were first organized in the 1930s in response to the “Dust Bowl” days. In 1937, the state of Montana was encouraged by President Roosevelt to adopt legislation that enabled the creation of local soil conservation districts that included the Blaine County Conservation District. In addition to appointed and elected supervisors serving the district, the CD may appoint an unlimited number of local individuals to serve as Associate Supervisors. Visit https://blainecountymt.gov/conservation-district for more information on the BCCD.

SUDOKU! The rules to the Shark Joke Japanese game of Sudoku are I once heard about a wealthy Texan who had an impressive ranch in Texas. On straightforward. Simply fill in the his ranch, he had a HUGE floodlit swimming pool and in this swimming pool he kept a blanks so that each row, each column, and each of the nine 3x3 SHARK. The rich Texan loved to throw lavish dinner parties and would invite his guests up around the pool afterwards. Then he would say to them, "If any of you will swim a length grids contain one instance of each of this pool then I will give you one of three things: $10 million, or half of my estate, or the hand of my daughter in marriage." of the numbers 1 through 9. SOLUTION:
The next issue publishes Wed., March 4, 2020. Ad DEADLINE Wed., February 26 at 9am.
Well one evening as he was saying this....and he always said before he finished, "but I must warn you before you do so, there is a shark in the pool." Well one evening as he was saying this, there was a splash, and a man, very nicely dressed, swam the entire length of the pool chased by the shark. He got out of the pool just in time as the shark thudded into the wall. The Texan said, "Congratulations you are the first person who has ever done that!! Now what would you like? Would you like $10 million?" The man gasped, "No thank you." He said, "Would you like half of my estate?" The man said, "No thank you." He said, "Ahh, you want the hand of my daughter in marriage?" The exasperated man said, "No thank you!" So the Texan said to him, "Well what do you want?" He said, "I want the name of the man who pushed me in."

Instructors needed: Hunter and bowhunter education are state-mandated courses, which are taught by dedicated volunteers. The heart of Montana’s Hunter and Bowhunter Education programs is this group of dedicated volunteer instructors. They stand as examples of how each hunter should demonstrate safety, ethics, behavior, and responsibility to not only themselves, but also to landowners, other hunters, and the resource. Region 6 needs to recruit more of these dedicated men and women to continue to serve the area. Anyone who is at least fourteen-years old is eligible to apply. Volunteer instructors are being sought across the region, which includes the counties of Hill, Blaine, Phillips, Valley, Daniels, McCone, Sheridan, and Roosevelt. For information on becoming a Hunter or Bowhunter education instructor, visit the FWP web site at fwp.mt.gov/ education/hunter/instructors/ to learn more and apply. For any information or questions on these upcoming courses or becoming an instructor, please contact Marc Kloker at 406-228-3704, or email mkloker@mt.gov. *Marc Kloker - Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, Region 6

Dear Dave, We’re debt-free except for our home, and we’ll have our fully-funded emergency fund of three to six months of expenses, we’ve agreed on six months’ worth, saved up by the end of February. We’re also setting aside a little each month to buy a newer car with cash later. We’re about $5,000 from our car fund goal, but my husband is getting impatient. He wants us to go ahead a finance the remainder, since it’s a relatively small amount. He has tried to justify this by mentioning that you don’t seem to have a problem with people borrowing money to buy a house. Could you explain the difference? - Lana Dear Lana, Okay, first things first. I don’t like debt of any kind. I don’t really like borrowing for a house, but I’m not unreasonable. I tolerate mortgage loans, as long as people use a 15-year, fixed rate mortgage, with payments that are no more than a fourth of their monthly take-home pay. A house is often the largest purchase in a person’s life, and one most people can’t achieve based solely on saving. I still recommend, however, setting aside as much as possible for a down payment before taking out a mortgage. Here’s the thing. Cars go down in value, while traditional homes generally increase in value substantially over the years. Plus, you can get an absolutely great, pre-owned car for $10,000 to $15,000 dollars. This is an amount which, in my mind, is doable over the course of several months through determined saving and living on a budget. Depending on where you live, a good home can cost 10 to 20 times that much.
Walleyes Unlimited Chapter Seeks New Members
The best way to build wealth and have a secure financial life is to stay away from debt. This means getting out of mortgage debt as quickly as possible, too. You’re never going to win with money if you can’t learn to delay pleasure. Everyone has that little kid inside them, and that little kid wants everything he or she wants right now. Your husband is asking a normal question, but he’s dangerously close to letting that immature little kid out. It happens to all of us once in a while, but we have to grow to a point as adults where we tell that little kid no! —Dave
According to John Demarais, the Walleyes Unlimited of Malta is “looking for new people and new ideas” to keep the Malta Chapter of Walleyes Unlimited of Montana active. They have several core members who have kept the chapter going for upwards of 20 years, but it is vital to the organization to gain new members in order for the mission of Walleyes to continue across the Hi-Line. For community members who take the “bait”, there will be an informational meeting at Stretch's Pizza in Malta on the 27th of February at 7 p.m. to find out how to be part of the effort to keep this club alive. The mission of the Walleyes is based on education, support, and maintenance of “suitable warm-water fish hatcheries... and a program which can accommodate the needs of warm water fishing” (www. montanawallyesunlimited.net). But there is another “lure”: the Malta Chapter of Walleyes provides support and sponsorship of tournaments and events that are family- and kid-friendly. For an “in” to a group to help do their part to promote positive experiences for our youth, support families, and educate the public about Montana's natural treasures, a call to John (406-301-1075) or attending the meeting at the end of this month can provide more information. The Malta Chapter is expecting to host its 31st annual banquet this spring. Interested parties and fishermen are encouraged to reach out to help keep this group active in the state by For Sale: 37 ton wrapped 2019 contacting John Demarais 406-301-1075 or Don Voegel of Sorghum bales.
