Whispering Winds: A History of the Big Flat
The Big Flat Historical Society is happy to announce that we are ready to begin taking orders for the Big Flat area history book. This book “began” approximately 5 years ago and has been an extensive project, involving many dedicated community members. While not completely finalized, the book will be approximately 500 pages and bound with a durable hard cover and matte coated pages. We expect the book to be completed in time for the TurnerͲHogeland All Class Reunion and Turner Centennial that is taking place July 5Ͳ8, 2012, and we will be distributing the books during registration that weekend. Any copies not claimed at the reunion will be shipped to you upon your request, or you can contact a Historical Society volunteer to arrange a time to pick up your copies. Please complete the form below and mail it back to us to place your order. Feel free to make copies of this form, or visit www.turnermontana.us to obtain additional copies of the form. COWBOY POETRY BY H. FRED LIESE Fred Liese makes his home at the edge of Black Coulee near Turner, Montana. Raised on the Big Flat, he finds plenty of “inspiration” in the people and things around him every day, and Fred’s brand of entertainment has earned him a large following throughout the US and Canada.
On a Moderate Day The Big Flat puts you to the test You’re headed east while walking west This plateau is so large and bare It buffers not the force of air.
The car is parked well in advance But mom and dad don’t get the chance Kids are tossed out on all fours They tripped the latch on auto doors.
Pressure knocks you to your knees No wonder, it’s devoid of trees Buck on up, ignore the pain It’s just a northern hurricane.
Bugs and birds adhere to walls That’s on a day of minor squalls The insects, they don’t stand a chance Eastern walls pecked with romance.
The sky boiled up like murky stew A cloud snaked down as it went through It hit the ground, unleashed, untamed, The school’s mascot there was named.
A hopper that he tried to dodge It’s in his throat, it seemed to lodge The tourist turns his head and spits He got a taste of northern grits.
Another mascot is the hawk Force is strong, it cannot walk So, in the sky, it takes a stand Gale force too stout to land.
Energy blew in the door Exhausting livestock across the floor The ewes depart, as sheep acquitted They found them bound, their wool was knitted. Toto sits on derriere This fluffy mop of puppy hair What’s holding down this hairy mass? His anchor stuck there in the grass. A rifle fired to the west An unwise choice, he did confess The ricochet was not a goof He found he was not bullet proof.
Kites fly high on any day They bore the kids when out to play An Angus cow up in the sky? Children flying without wings Believe no one, yes, pigs may fly They tied their hats with stampede strings.Sawflies harvest fields of wheat Resembling now a busy street… This situation was appraised One hen escaped from her brick coop The horse it turned with tail raised She ended up in chicken soup They are detached and cannot cry A left was made while headed south They caught the bird, they had a feast Through the air, the grain heads fly It blew the bit from horse’s mouth. This came about two counties east. A heap of stones, they hit with power Instantly, they’re ground to flour. Winter force, your nose may freeze Pivots rotate on some fields The dog days burn, invert a sneeze An instrument to boost the yields It’s in the blood and no disease A big offense won’t linger on But days of strong and eastern suction, The love of this most gentle breeze That’s should you shake the parmesan. The neighbor has increased production. An honor to this force, it pins The history book is “Whispering Winds”. Fred Liese Tricia’s Trader, © 2012

Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor
by Krayton Kerns, DVM, State Rep. HD 58
We hope you enjoy reading this feature in Tricia’s Trader. You may agree, you may disagree with Dr. Kerns’ Ramblings, but
you will always have something to discuss over dinner.
Can We Keep It?
“A republic—if you can keep it,” Benjamin Franklin shot back to the woman who asked what type of government had been produced by the Constitutional Convention. Today, as the Supreme Court hears arguments regarding the constitutionality of ObamaCare, no truer words have ever been spoken. Can we keep it? To help you decipher the censored news reports from Washington, ponder the following principles underlying our American republic. I. Our Declaration of Independence clearly states our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness come directly from God. He gives them and only He can take them away. If our rights came from government, they can be instituted or removed depending upon the whims of rulers. Such was the case throughout history prior to 1776 when our founders established our great American experiment in freedom. II. The framers of our constitution despised tyranny, yet they feared democracy because historically, majority rule always descends back into tyranny. We democratically elect representatives to serve in government, but in their oath of office they pledge to “support protect and defend the Constitution.” The allegiance of the duly elected public servant to the rule of law makes us a constitutional republic, not a democracy. III. Our Constitution purposely limits government. American framers knew people in power invariably thirst for more and the federal government would become oppressively large. Article I, section 8 of the Constitution enumerates the limited governing powers the people granted to Congress. It is all they are allowed to do. The Tenth Amendment grants the unmentioned powers, and there could be thousands, to the states or the people. This provides a critical vertical balance of power between the federal and state governments and this is where the many state legislatures enter the fray. In consideration to the above points and the ObamaCare debate consider this: 1. If healthcare is a right, it came from government, not God, and as such it may be granted or taken away at the whims of the ruling elite. This should scare you. 2. Where in Article I, section 8 of the Constitution did we grant Congress the power to control healthcare? It’s not there. To stretch the “commerce clause” around healthcare defies logic, yet if the Supreme Court rules as such there is no segment of your life outside the reach of Congress. 3. If the Supreme Court finds the insurance mandate is constitutional, yet the majority of state legislatures rule to the contrary, whose opinion is superior? (You have to think about this one.) 4. If the Supreme Court tosses the case because ObamaCare is not in full effect until 2013, expect CNN, MSNBC and all others in the state run media to spin this as a huge victory for the president. The heavy lifting of saving our republic then falls on the shoulders of every state legislator who honors his oath of office—a job not for the faint of heart. Can we keep the republic? The lines between a republic and a democracy have been purposely blurred since the early 1900s.
