COWBOY POETRY BY H. FRED LIESE Fred Liese makes his home at the edge of Black Coulee near Turner, Montana. Raised on the Big Flat, he finds plenty of “inspiration” in the people and things around him every day, and Fred’s brand of entertainment has earned him a large following throughout the US and Canada.
Blazing Down the Road This partnership was quite unique From the day they joined hands The life they chose was on the road Their job held great demands.
August days, their bodies cooked Their eyes are filled with sweat A resting moment comes about They smoke a cigarette.
From the days of scorching hot To a day that made them shiver Physically, they load their truck Then hay they did deliver.
Their spirits soared so cheery bright All the time, they’re joking “Our hobbies are quite evident They’re hauling hay and smoking.”
They bought it new in ‘62 A two ton Ford of blue To transport hay most every day Now feed supplies accrue.
Their truck, it was a history book It recorded what was smoked An ashtray on the overloads The vinyl seats were poked.
The bales are rectangular With wire ties or strings Livestock view with one regard The dinner bell, it rings.
All the butts did congregate Remains are short and black The windshield held a greasy film It’s a coffee colored plaque.
Verbal contracts came about Handshakes bound the deals Weather did deter them not They load the livestock meals.
Their truck, it met a blackened fate The cause, folks did surmise Down the road, it was ablaze It was a huge surprise.
She added with her pen and pad There was no calculator She always dreamed of luxury That’s a bale elevator.
Their cargo, they could not dispose The truck bed, it was chained Exhausting all their options Now, only one remained.
Loader tractors made her smile She’s gratified, it’s true Or with no machines to aid the task, They would just make do.
They looked on as it engulfed A loud explosion came Then they thank the good Lord They’re not in the haul of flame.

Deciding When to Retire: When Timing Becomes Critical
Deciding when to retire may not be one decision but a series of decisions and calculations. For example, you’ll need to estimate not only your anticipated expenses, but also what sources of retirement income you’ll have and how long you’ll need your retirement savings to last. You’ll need to take into account your life expectancy and health as well as when you want to start receiving Social Security or pension benefits, and when you’ll start to tap your retirement savings. Each of these factors may affect the others as part of an overall retirement income plan. If inflation is 3% a year--its historical average since 1914--it will cut the purchasing power of a fixed annual income in half in roughly 23 years. Factoring inflation into connected and productive. You’ll also need to shift your mental focus from accumulating savings to the retirement equation, you’ll probably need your retirement income to increase each year just to cover the same expenses. If you decide to start receiving payments at age 62, they will be lower than if you waited until your full retirement age. Contact the Social Security Administration for more information. There are other considerations as well. For example, if you expect to receive pension payments, early retirement may adversely affect them. Why? Because the greatest accrual of benefits generally occurs during your final years of employment, when your earning power is presumably highest. Early retirement could reduce your monthly benefits. It will affect your Social Security benefits too. Also, don’t forget that if you hope to retire before you turn 59½ and plan to start using your 401(k) or IRA savings right away, you’ll generally pay a 10% early withdrawal penalty plus any regular income tax due (with some exceptions, including disability payments and distributions from employer plans such as 401(k)s after you reach age 55 and terminate employment). Finally, you’re not eligible for Medicare until you turn 65. Unless you’ll be eligible for retiree health benefits through your employer or take a job that offers health insurance, you’ll need to calculate the cost of paying for insurance or health care out-of-pocket, at least until you can receive Medicare coverage.
Delaying retirement
Postponing retirement lets you continue to add to your retirement savings. That’s especially advantageous if you’re saving in tax-deferred accounts, and if you’re receiving employer contributions. For example, if you retire at age 65 instead of age 55, and manage to save an additional $20,000 per year at an 8% rate of return during that time, you can add an extra $312,909 to your retirement fund. (This is a hypothetical example and is not intended to reflect the actual performance of any specific investment.) Even if you’re no longer adding to your retirement savings, delaying retirement postpones the date that you’ll need to start withdrawing from them. That could enhance your nest egg’s ability to last throughout your lifetime. Postponing full retirement also gives you more transition time. If you hope to trade a full-time job for running your own small business or launching a new career after you “retire,” you might be able to lay the groundwork for a new life by taking classes at night or trying out your new role part-time. Testing your plans while you’re still employed can help you anticipate the challenges of your post-retirement role. Doing a reality check before relying on a new endeavor for retirement income can help you see how much income you can realistically expect from it. Also, you’ll learn whether it’s something you really want to do before you spend what might be a significant portion of your retirement savings on it.
Phased retirement: the best of both worlds
Some employers have begun to offer phased retirement programs, which allow you to receive all or part of your pension benefit once you’ve reached retirement age, while you continue to work part-time for the same employer. Phased retirement programs are getting more attention as the baby boomer generation ages. In the past, pension law for private sector employers encouraged workers to retire early. Traditional pension plans generally weren’t allowed to pay benefits until an employee either stopped working completely or reached the plan’s normal retirement age (typically age 65). This frequently encouraged employees who wanted a reduced workload but hadn’t yet reached normal retirement age to take early retirement and go to work elsewhere (often for a competitor), allowing them to collect both a pension from the prior employer and a salary from the new employer. However, pension plans now are allowed to pay benefits when an employee reaches age 62, even if the employee is still working and hasn’t yet reached the plan’s normal retirement age. Phased retirement can benefit both prospective retirees, who can enjoy a more flexible work schedule and a smoother transition into full retirement; and employers, who are able to retain an experienced worker. Employers aren’t required to offer a phased retirement program, but if yours does, it’s worth at least a review to see how it might affect your plans.
Key Decision Points Eligible to tap tax-deferred savings without penalty for early withdrawal Eligible for early Social Security benefits Eligible for Medicare Full retirement age for Social Security
Age Don’t forget ... 59 1/2* Federal income taxes will be due on pretax contributions and earnings 62 Taking benefits before full retirement age reduces each monthly payment 65 Contact Medicare 3 months before your 65th birthday 65 to 67, depending on when you were born After full retirement age, earned income no longer affects Social Security benefits *Age 55 for distributions from employer plans upon termination of employment
Check your assumptions
The sooner you start to plan the timing of your retirement, the more time you’ll have to make adjustments that can help ensure those years are everything you hope for. If you’ve already made some tentative assumptions or choices, you may need to revisit them, especially if you’re considering taking retirement in stages. And as you move into retirement, you’ll want to monitor your retirement income plan to ensure that your initial assumptions are still valid, that new laws and regulations haven’t affected your situation, and that your savings and investments are performing as you need them to. you will always have something to discuss over dinner.
When life gives us lemons, we are told to make lemonade. The summer after my first year of vet school, Harold poked his nose into the wheat bin and ate himself to death, so I turned him into lemonade. There were no tears at Harold’s passing as he was a rough riding ranch horse few cowboys rode twice. The only person I can remember saddling him up two consecutive days was Dad, but he had to because he was the boss. (One of the unfortunate perks of being upper management on a family ranch is riding the jug heads other cowboys refuse.) Like most animals who succumb in the barnyard, Harold received a ranch burial—my brother hooked a log chain to his leg and dragged him down to the bone pile. Two weeks later, when I was home for the weekend, I visited Harold. That winter I had studied anatomy and for display in my future veterinary clinic, I decided to boil, bleach and reassemble the leg skeletons of a cow and a horse. “This will be a perfect use for Harold,” I thought as I walked to the bone pile carrying a meat saw. A shift in the breeze made me question this do-it-yourself project, but imagining the sparkling white skeleton sitting on my future desk, sparked me to creep closer to the fermenting mass of flesh. Harold was not alone and stacked next to him were a couple cows, a yearling steer, a few calves and a sheep, which was odd because we did not run sheep. I braced Harold’s front leg against my own, commenced sawing and discovered his leg was falling apart faster than I was cutting. I gathered the bones in a bucket and moved to his back leg. Utilizing what I learned on the first leg, I put down my saw and wrenched upward on the rear leg to dislocate the stifle joint. This was a mistake. Harold split open exposing a crawling mass of maggots and rotting flesh. I quickly gathered the bones of his rear leg, scooped up my saw and scooted away without taking a breath. When I stepped out of the pickup back home, Aussies scampered from every corner of the barnyard and were excitedly dancing and barking trying to see what treasure was in my bucket. My trophy wife on the other hand, neither danced nor barked and was less welcoming of my arrival home. We had not been married quite one year, but she was beginning to understand what Mom meant when on our wedding day she jokingly whispered, “Not only do you get Krayton; you get all his projects too!” A propane branding torch quickly brought the five gallon bucket to a rolling boil which separated off the flesh. When the bones had cooled to the touch, I laid them on the garage floor to be certain all were there. They were not. In my rush to scavenge a skeleton on a single breath, I misplaced the talus; a softball-sized bone of the hock. As disgusting as it sounds, I had no choice but to search back through the dead pile and this finally brings me to my point. Much of what we do in the legislature is like digging through the bone pile and I do not relish the idea of doing anything twice. In each of my previous three sessions, we have been bombarded with animal rights legislation with titles such as the “Puppy Mill Bill”, the “Animal Hoarder Bill”, or the “Kennel Registration Bill”. All share the commonality of increasing government regulation relative to citizens. These bills are crafted for weak kneed legislators who cast every vote based on feelings, so it is imperative we kill these bills in committee. (Few politicians have the guts to publically vote against “puppies” on the House floor and the animal rights crowd knows this.) News releases in late May suggest my efforts in Montana’s legislature have been futile. The USDA modified the Animal Welfare Act of 1966 to now regulate anyone who breeds four or more females and markets their puppies electronically or through the mail. (If any producer does not think this applies to them, the animal rights crowd sees no difference between puppies, kittens, calves, lambs, foals, kids or piglets. You are next!) By decree, a bureaucrat of the executive branch can now enter your home, confiscate your property, and assess you a fine if you do not operate in a manner they deem acceptable. Oh, and by the way, they have yet to actually write the rules for which you will be held accountable. Would one of you progressives please explain to me what you find so wonderful about growing such an intrusive government? But first, if I can find my meat saw, I’ll make us some lemonade.

What about Obesity?
HBO, in cooperation with the Institute of Medicine, Center for Disease Control, and National Institute of Health have put together a four part series on obesity. I haven’t seen any part of it, but I have read several reviews and the central theme seems to be that they no longer want to hold people responsible for their own obesity. Their premise is that it’s discriminatory and counterproductive to blame people for their extra pounds. At first this sounds so ridiculous that it’s unbelievable, but on further reflection (and further reading) their purpose becomes obvious. It’s a power and control grab. They want to blame and, of course, regulate developers because they aren’t putting in enough sidewalks to create opportunities for exercise and they want to regulate farmers so they will move to raising more fruits and vegetables. By the time they get everything they want all food processers will be under their thumb. I can sympathize with obese people because they are ridiculed, but removing the ridicule won’t remove the problem. If the person that put those pounds on won’t make the commitment to get them off, then they will have to live with them. Blaming someone else won’t take off the pounds. If we take a look at our ancestors, we really can’t say obesity is a genetic problem, because obesity was almost non-existent until refined sugar and white flour became staples in our diet; they didn’t have very many sidewalks back then either. In the 1700’s only the wealthy were fat because sugar was very expensive and the wealthy didn’t have to work for a living. As sugar became less expensive and our work load got lighter, we have become the fattest country on the planet. If genetics are the problem, why isn’t obesity a worldwide problem? Let’s take a look at addiction, because that is where the major problem is. In the 1950’s we knew that smoking caused cancer but very few people quit because of that knowledge. Talking to people about the dangers of smoking fell on deaf ears. Then, more and more businesses started limiting where they would allow smoking and the smokers became indigent and tried to blame society for their problem. But as the stigma of smoking became more and more objectionable, more and more smokers began to give it up. I haven’t found one ex-smoker who wasn’t happy they finally quit smoking. Thanks to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), their crusade against drunk drivers finally laid the blame for drunk driving on the drunk drivers themselves. Prior to MADD, drunk drivers could kill someone in a car wreck and get off with a slap on the wrist. Because of MADD there are fewer drunk drivers on the road today and it happened because we now blame the driver, not society. We still need to impeach a few judges, however, to keep it working. We have spent hundreds of billions of dollars on the illegal drug war and we now have more drug addicts than ever. The reason is because we went after the sellers instead of the users. If you are ever going to cure an addiction you have to incentivize the addicted, and you can’t do that by holding them blameless. Sugar is addictive; until we own up to the fact that we are sugar addicts and do something about it ourselves, we will remain fat and unhealthy. Getting ridiculed for being overweight may not be a bad thing; instead, maybe it will incentivize people to do something about it. I have written this article with no malice intended. I hope it helps rather than hurts. Contact me at bhake@mtintouch.net or PO Box 81, Turner, MT 59542.
