Protect Yourself against Identity Theft

Whether they’re snatching your purse, diving into your dumpster, stealing your mail, or hacking into your computer, they’re out to get you. Who are they? Identity thieves. Identity thieves can empty your bank account, max out your credit cards, open new accounts in your name, and purchase furniture, cars, and even homes on the basis of your credit history. If they give your personal information to the police during an arrest and then don’t show up for a court date, you may be subsequently arrested and jailed. And what wil you get for their efforts? You’l get the headache and expense of cleaning up the mess they leave behind. You may never be able to completely prevent your identity from being stolen, but here are some steps you can take to help protect yourself from becoming a victim. Check yourself out It’s important to review your credit report periodically. Check to make sure that all the information contained in it is correct, and be on the lookout for any fraudulent activity. You may get your credit report for free once a year. To do so, contact the Annual Credit Report Request Service online at www.annualcreditreport.com or call (877) 322-8228. If you need to correct any information or dispute any entries, contact the three national credit reporting agencies: 1. Equifax: www.equifax.com, (800) 685-1111 2. Experian: www.experian.com, 888) 397-3742 3. TransUnion: www.transunion.com, (800) 916-8800 Secure your number Your most important personal identifier is your Social Security number (SSN). Guard it carefully. Never carry your Social Security card with you unless you’l need it. The same goes for other forms of identification (for example, health insurance cards) that display your SSN. If your state uses your SSN as your driver’s license number, request an alternate number. Don’t have your SSN preprinted on your checks, and don’t let merchants write it on your checks. Don’t give it out over the phone unless you initiate the call to an organization you trust. Ask the three major credit reporting agencies to truncate it on your credit reports. Try to avoid listing it on employment applications; offer instead to provide it during a job interview. Don’t leave home with it Most of us carry our checkbooks and all of our credit cards, debit cards, and telephone cards with us all the time. That’s a bad idea; if your wallet or purse is stolen, the thief wil have a treasure chest of new toys to play with. Carry only the cards and/or checks you’l need for any one trip. And keep a written record of all your account numbers, credit card expiration dates, and the telephone numbers of the customer service and fraud departments in a secure place--at home. Keep your receipts When you make a purchase with a credit or debit card, you’re given a receipt. Don’t throw it away or leave it behind; it may contain your credit or debit card number. And don’t leave it in the shopping bag inside your car while you continue shopping; if your car is broken into and the item you bought is stolen, your identity may be as well. Save your receipts until you can check them against your monthly credit card and bank statements, and watch your statements for purchases you didn’t make. When you toss it, shred it Before you throw out any financial records such as credit or debit card receipts and statements, cancelled checks, or even offers for credit you receive in the mail, shred the documents, preferably with a cross-cut shredder. If you don’t, you may find the panhandler going through your dumpster was looking for more than discarded leftovers. Keep a low profile The more your personal information is available to others, the more likely you are to be victimized by identity theft. While you don’t need to become a hermit in a cave, there are steps you can take to help minimize your exposure: • To stop telephone calls from national telemarketers, list your telephone number with the Federal Trade Commission’s National Do Not Call Registry by calling (888) 382-1222 or registering online at www.donotcall.gov • To remove your name from most national mailing and e-mailing lists, as well as most telemarketing lists, write the Direct Marketing Association at 1120 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY 100366700, or register online at www.dmachoice.org • To remove your name from marketing lists prepared by the three national consumer reporting agencies, call (888) 567-8688 or register online at www.optoutprescreen.com • When given the opportunity to do so by your bank, investment firm, insurance company, and credit card companies, opt out of allowing them to share your financial information with other organizations • You may even want to consider having your name and address removed from the telephone book and reverse directories Take a byte out of crime Whatever else you may want your computer to do, you don’t want it to inadvertently reveal your personal information to others. Take steps to help assure that this won’t happen. Install a firewall to prevent hackers from obtaining information from your hard drive or hijacking your computer to use it for committing other crimes. This is especial y important if you use a high-speed connection that leaves you continuously connected to the Internet. Moreover, install virus protection software and update it on a regular basis. Try to avoid storing personal and financial information on a laptop; if it’s stolen, the thief may obtain more than your computer. If you must store such information on your laptop, make things as difficult as possible for a thief by protecting these files with a strong password--one that’s six to eight characters long, and that contains letters (upper and lower case), numbers, and symbols. “If a stranger calls, don’t answer.” Opening e-mails from people you don’t know, especial y if you download attached files or click on hyperlinks within the message, can expose you to viruses, infect your computer with “spyware” that captures information by recording your keystrokes, or lead you to “spoofs” (websites that replicate legitimate business sites) designed to trick you into revealing personal information that can be used to steal your identity. If you wish to visit a business’s legitimate website, use your stored bookmark or type the URL address directly into the browser. If you provide personal or financial information about yourself over the Internet, do so only at secure websites; to determine if a site is secure, look for a URL that begins with “https” (instead of “http”) or a lock icon on the browser’s status bar. And when it comes time to upgrade to a new computer, remove all your personal information from the old one before you dispose of it. Using the “delete” function isn’t sufficient to do the job; overwrite the hard drive by using a “wipe” utility program. The minimal cost of investing in this software may save you from being wiped out later by an identity thief. Be diligent As the grizzled duty sergeant used to say on a televised police drama, “Be careful out there.” The identity you save may be your own. Vitamin D



Vitamin D has taken up a lot of space in medical research lately, so I would like to pass on a few of my observations on the matter. Most of us understand that vitamin D along with calcium is necessary for strong bones, but it has been observed recently that it is also an important factor in maintaining a healthy immune system. Patients entering the hospital with systemic infections and a low vitamin D reserve have a higher mortality rate than patients with adequate to high vitamin D reserves. This holds especially true for the very young (less than 3) and the very old (more than 75, “Oh crap, that’s me”). It has also been observed that a higher percentage of the overall population is testing lower for vitamin D reserves than in the past. Now let me make one of my observations here. Vitamins A, D, E and K are all fat soluble vitamins, so a low-fat, no-fat diet that has been promoted by the diet gurus for the last 40 years has to be low in these fat soluble vitamins, because without fat they aren’t there. Now, take a walk down any street in this great country and then tell me that low fat diets are working. You’d have to be a candidate for a Seeing Eye dog to make that observation. I think it’s about time the diet gurus applied some common sense and realized that all food groups are equally important. Moderation is the mantra we should be promoting, not the elimination of important nutrition. So this begs the questions: #1) , #2) who needs it most?, and #3) how much is enough? #1) How do we get vitamin D? Our best source for vitamin D is sunshine. Our body converts subcutaneous cholesterol into vitamin D with the Ultraviolet rays from the sun. However, the amount of sunshine needed is controversial and should be left up to a professional because of skin cancer concerns (no, 15 minutes isn’t enough). Some dairy products have added vitamin D supplements, but you would have to drink more than a quart of milk every day to stay current with your vitamin D requirements. The surest source would be supplementing with Fish Liver oil. #2) Who needs it most? The very young need it to support building a strong skeletal frame and help boost their immune system. Sadly, mother’s milk does not supply sufficient vitamin D unless the mother makes a serious effort to maintain good levels of vitamin D reserves. The very young should be considered for supplementation. The elderly need it (there I am again) to prevent osteoporosis and systemic infections. As we age we are less able to assimilate vitamin D from our gut and we generally get less sunshine to make our own, so supplementation or a concerted effort to get sufficient sunshine becomes important. Ugh! A tablespoon of Cod Liver oil is not something to look forward to. Young adults and adolescents generally get enough sunshine to make their own vitamin D, but a shortage of the D vitamin is not something to be taken lightly and it would serve you well to ask your Dr. to test your vitamin D levels. #3) How much is enough? The amount needed varies with age, gender and ethnicity so a knowledgeable professional should be consulted. It would take a very long chapter to cover all of the important information about vitamin D, so if you would like to know more, Google Vitamin D on the internet and you will have more information than you ever wanted to know at your fingertips. Phillips County Motor Sports: Big Dollar Race Malta, September 22-23

Racers, start your engines! Phillips County Motorsports in Malta is about to wrap up its 4th straight year of drag racing excitement with the Big Dollar Race, the last race of the 2012 season. PCMS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that began about five years ago. Five individuals met with PhillCo Economic Growth Council, who owns the property at the old airport in Malta, and were successful in securing a contract to start a drag strip there. Conditions of the contract gave the volunteers a deadline to hold their first race. After many hours of volunteer time enough guard rails were accumulated to have the PCMS’ first race, dubbed the “Outlaw Race”, a sort of play on the fact that they were not sanctioned at that point. Afterwards, the group started fundraising, selling chunks of concrete for $350, and began the annual auction and fall fundraiser held in conjunction with the last race of each year. In its first year, the group chalked up a phenomenal 60 car count, and the numbers continued to climb for the next 3 years, topping out at 100 cars in 2011, and 80 cars this year. The event draws racers from Canada and all over Montana, North Dakota, Wyoming and Idaho. John Carnahan, a director with PCMS, Inc. says the reason for this great success is there is no shortage of good, hard-working volunteers from the area. Because PCMS, Inc. is a non-profit organization, all net profits go right back into the track. Plans for future improvements include applying for grant funding to build brick-and-mortar bathrooms and securing a more long-term contract with PhillCo for continued use of the land. Today PCMS is sanctioned through the IHRA (International Hot Rod Association) which offers big benefits to members, including good insurance options and participation in programs and races across the country like ProAm, Summer Series and a Team Finals event for the different divisions. PCMS, Inc. belongs to the Division 6 “Border Bandits”, which currently espouses 10 tracks across the northwestern US and Canada. To be sanctioned by IHRA, PCMS pays an annual membership fee, and individuals are welcome to purchase driver memberships. Carnahan, besides being a director of PCMS, Inc. is also a Division 6 IHRA director, helping put on races around the region. For this last race of the season, called The Big Dollar Race, set for Sunday, Sept. 23, PCMS is expecting a payout of $12,000 based on a 90 car count. Entry fees for this feature race are $100 per car. Saturday offers racing opportunities for Junior Drag Racers as well. Stahl Seed Cleaning is sponsoring the Saturday junior drag race to be held at 1:00 with payouts starting at $400 for first place and down several places. Saturday also affords the option for racers entered in Sunday’s race to Test and Tune, which is especially helpful for cars that have never driven this track. Concluding the weekend is the annual fundraiser banquet Saturday night at City Hall. Lots of good food will be served for $25 per plate and an auction will be held to raise money for track improvements. 5:30-6:30pm is happy hour, followed by dinner and the auction around 7:30. The evening should conclude around 10:00. PCMS is expecting about 275 people this year. Sugarbeet Festival Chinook, September 21-22 Nearly every town has its’ trademark “annual event” and Chinook’s is the Sugarbeet Festival, now on eight consecutive years. The event was preceded by similar celebrations by other names like “Western Days”, for example, held at different times of the year. But the current festival held in honor of the town’s historical industrial ties to the sweet root seems to have a far-reaching future; the Chinook Area Chamber of Commerce works hard to keep the theme and the content fresh from year to year. This year’s theme was an easy pick for the volunteer committee, celebrating Blaine County’s “First 100 Years”. The activities on the calendar are intended to take participants back in time as they look forward to the next century. Rita Surber is the coordinator in charge of the 2012 Sugarbeet Festival, and she points out a few featured activities taking place this year, one of which is a style show of “fragile, antique apparel”. Many of the items modeled are on loan from the Blaine County Museum and more will come from the trunks and attics of local citizens. Horse-drawn wagons will be at the ready (weather-dependent) to take folks on a tour of several of the historic homes in town. Should the weather not cooperate for an outdoor hayride, though, buses will be provided. The third floor of the courthouse will become a photo gallery of Blaine County memorabilia – should you have items to loan to this display, feel free to contact Mrs. Surber in the evenings at (406)357-3459. The Blaine County Museum will host an antique quilt show, plus guest wool spinners will be demonstrating at the museum as well. To submit a quilt for display, contact Helen Bucklin by September 19th at 357-2422. There’s plenty of kids action, as well, with Hands on History in the back room of the new Eagles building, not to mention sharing a 100th birthday with the Girl Scouts, Montana 4-H and Oreo! In recognition, Oreo cookies will be free for the taking to all who want one. Other activities for all ages include the Dan’s Auto Parts breakfast, annual beet contest, fun run and, this year, a horseshoe tournament, which will be held at the fairgrounds (contact Joe Uhl at 357-3741 to play.) During the day, a farmers market will take place on the street adjacent to First Bank of Montana (contact Trish Gruszie at 357-3689 to participate). A variety of live music can be heard near Inman Park, and more musical entertainment is to be provided by Dennis Wisch at the high school auditorium Saturday evening. In the spirit of Blaine County’s birthday party, car show entrants are encouraged to compete for a Special Prize by dressing to match the vintage of their automobile. While the costumes are on, an Old Time Photo can be snapped to capture the moment. Centenarians and “almost” Centenarians are invited to be Grand Marshalls of the 2012 parade. Liberty County Harvest Festival Chester, September 15 With harvest nearing completion, the little town of Chester has a celebration in the works. The Chester Harvest Fest has been on the calendars of Chester folks for years. The festival occurs annually in conjunction with the town’s Homecoming Weekend; this year the Harvest Fest takes place September 15. Harvest time in Montana means payday for farmers. After tilling, planting, and months of waiting and tending to the growing crops, August and September are a time of intense work hinging on perfect conditions for a successful harvest. Yields vary from field to field, but with any luck, a farmer can cover all expenses and have a little left over to start again next year…and maybe buy a few Christmas presents this winter. Lately, with millions of CRP acres going back into production each October the workload is climbing. Across the hi-line, some of the younger generation is “moving home” to take up work on a few of those fields that have been in the reserve program for decades, which can only be good for the communities these young families will live in. The impact on Montana’s small towns remains to be seen, but change is definitely in the air. Held at Chester City Park, the Harvest Festival will feel like a breath of fresh air after a full season of hard work to area farmers and ag producers. Some might still be in the fields, but the event is still a great opportunity to step down off the combine for a bite of lunch and coffee with friends and neighbors. Vendors will be selling their food and wares, kids games will be in full swing, and contests of many kinds will provide a little friendly competition. This true Montana-style event is a great transition from the dog days of summer to the brisk fall mornings and school sports. The Liberty County Chamber of Commerce plans to provide a great reprieve for locals who come to town and join the fun.

The Great American Cowboy Hat

Last summer the trophy wife and I bought a leather love seat to face our disconnected television. (It did not make sense to me either, but I find furniture shopping more pleasurable if I just keep my mouth shut.) The store clerk was a very attractive young lady in a dress and high heels and Druann requested we take the sofa right then. “Well, my crew has left for the day, but I can help you load it,” the clerk offered as she kicked off her high heels. Her feet were calloused and twisted like a long-toed canner cow. Both the trophy wife and I spotted them and I asked, “Are you a runner?” “Yeah, how did you know?” She replied. “Just a hunch,” I mumbled. “Your feet look like my wife’s.” This past weekend, Druann and I ran Oregon’s infamous Hood to Coast Relay Race. In this event, 12 runners stuff themselves, their gear and food into two vans and take turns running segments of the 200 mile course from Mount Hood to the ocean at Seaside. (Yes, I know it is crazy, but that is the fun part.) The trophy wife and I ran with the Montana Running Ranchers and because our teammates spend as much time wearing boots as they do running shoes, we displayed an interesting mix of rancher’s legs and runner’s feet. (The Ringling Five band has already penned lyrics poetically explaining pale and pasty rancher’s leg, so I need not say more.) Our two, 15 passenger vans were decorated with professionally created photos of a t-bone sizzling on a charcoal grill. Because this was a promo for beef, we handed out jerky samples and wore our white, straw cowboy hats as we scooted along. Our hats were a hit and many participants, spectators, and race volunteers walked up and spoke warmly of their connection to Montana and our way of life. There is something magical about the great American cowboy hat. Adding flavor to this event are the creative team names and their similarly decorated vans, so let me tell you about a team which did not have rancher’s legs or cowboy hats. At exchange 12, deep in downtown Portland under a maze of highway bridges, I spotted a team whose theme still confuses me. Picture your neighborhood men’s bowling league sporting red uniforms from Victoria’s Secret and you will have a pretty good visual of the scene. I am uncertain what they were promoting, but an Asian fellow with pink hair, wearing red high heels, a red apron, red underwear and nothing else was handing out homemade cookies. Fortunately, my mother taught this dumb old cowboy to never take candy or cookies from a stranger and at the moment I could not think of anyone stranger than this dude, so I declined. (I had a hunch they were vegetarians, so I did not offer them jerky for fear of offending them.) Montana’s Running Ranchers hit the ocean in 25 hours and 28 minutes placing us 86th out of 1070 teams overall, and 7th out of 101 in the mixed, sub-masters division. So why am I telling you this in a political op-ed column? I wanted voters to see my normal side, or as normal side as I get. You have to be crazy to enter the political arena and the Hood to Coast proves I am. Vote for me.
