Home of free ranging Bison Now some have a home Where the bison now roam Their ranches are now in decay Now pardon the word There’s a buffalo turd It’s a sign of the ranchers’ dismay.

Fish, Wildlife and Parks Like a pond full of sharks Approaching from out of the blue The hand that once feeds Now severed and bleeds The rest they are trying to chew.

The bison now play And some leisurely lay In fodder plumb up to their ears They seem rather thrilled That their bellies are filled On hay that’s put up for the steers.

The bison are free While folks pay the fee In keeping the worthless employed Their superiors praise And they get a raise For everything they have destroyed.

The wires are broke And they’re twisted like rope The fence is in great disarray It’s smashed to the ground Now, the ranchers have found No cow is considered a stray.

They sell hunting permits And now it all fits Something has clearly arose What they introduce It’s quick to produce It’s land that the owners’ will close.

They purchased vaccine To keep cattle clean From disease, where their cattle abort Their investment is wasted The disease, it is pasted In bison, it’s clear to report.

The Benefits of Tax-Advantaged Savings Vehicles

Taxes can take a big bite out of your total investment returns, so it’s helpful to look for tax-advantaged strategies when building a portfolio. But keep in mind that investment decisions shouldn’t be driven solely by tax considerations; other factors to consider include the potential risk, the expected rate of return, and the quality of the investment. Tax-deferred and tax-free investments Tax deferral is the process of delaying (but not necessarily eliminating) until a future year the payment of income taxes on income you earn in the current year. For example, the money you put into your 401(k) retirement account isn’t taxed until you withdraw it, which might be 30 or 40 years down the road! Tax deferral can be beneficial because: • The money you would have spent on taxes remains invested • You may be in a lower tax bracket when you make withdrawals from your accounts (for example, when you’re retired), and • You can accumulate more dollars in your accounts due to compounding Compounding means that your earnings become part of your underlying investment, and they in turn earn interest. In the early years of an investment, the benefit of compounding may not be that significant. But as the years go by, the long-term boost to your total return can be dramatic. Keep in mind that tax deferred is not the same as tax free. “Tax deferred” means that the payment of taxes is delayed, while “tax free” means that no income taxes are due at all. Some savings vehicles, like Roth IRAs, can generate tax-free income. Taxes make a big difference Let’s assume two people have $5,000 to invest every year for a period of 30 years. One person invests in a tax-free account like a Roth 401(k) that earns 6% per year, and the other person invests in a taxable account that also earns 6% each year. Assuming a tax rate of 28%, in 30 years the tax-free account will be worth $395,291, while the taxable account will be worth $295,896. That’s a difference of $99,395. This hypothetical example is for illustrative purposes only, and its results are not representative of any specific investment or mix of investments. Actual results will vary. The taxable account balance assumes that earnings are taxed as ordinary income and does not reflect possible lower maximum tax rates on capital gains and dividends which would make the taxable investment return more favorable, thereby reducing the difference in performance between the accounts shown. Investment fees and expenses have not been deducted. If they had been, the results would have been lower. You should consider your personal investment horizon and income tax brackets, both current and anticipated, when making an investment decision as these may further impact the results of the comparison. This illustration assumes a fixed annual rate of return; the rate of return on your actual investment portfolio will be different, and will vary over time, according to actual market performance. This is particularly true for long-term investments. It is important to note that investments offering the potential for higher rates of return also involve a higher degree of risk to principal. Tax-advantaged savings vehicles for retirement One of the best ways to accumulate funds for retirement or any other investment objective is to use tax-advantaged (i.e., tax-deferred or tax-free) savings vehicles when appropriate. • Traditional IRAs --Anyone under age 70½ who earns income or is married to someone with earned income can contribute to an IRA. Depending upon your income and whether you’re covered by an employersponsored retirement plan, you may or may not be able to deduct your contributions to a traditional IRA, but your contributions always grow tax deferred. However, you’ll owe income taxes when you make a withdrawal (and a 10% additional penalty tax if you’re under age 59½, unless an exception applies). In 2012, you can contribute up to $5,000 to an IRA, and individuals age 50 and older can contribute an additional $1,000. • Roth IRAs --Roth IRAs are open only to individuals with incomes below certain limits. Your contributions are made with after-tax dollars, but they will grow tax-deferred and qualified distributions will be tax free when you withdraw them. The amount you can contribute is the same as for traditional IRAs. Total combined contributions to Roth and traditional IRAs can’t exceed $5,000 each year for individuals under age 50. • SIMPLE IRAs and SIMPLE 401(k)s --These plans are generally associated with small businesses. As with traditional IRAs, your contributions grow tax deferred, but you’ll owe income taxes when you make a withdrawal. For 2012, you can contribute up to $11,500 to one of these plans; individuals age 50 and older can contribute an additional $2,500. (SIMPLE 401(k) plans can also allow Roth contributions.) • Employer-sponsored plans (401(k)s, 403(b)s, 457 plans) --Contributions to these types of plans grow tax deferred, but you’ll owe income taxes when you make a withdrawal. For 2012, you can contribute up to $17,000 (up from $16,500 in 2011) to one of these plans; individuals age 50 and older can contribute an additional $5,500. Employers can generally allow employees to make after-tax Roth contributions, in which case qualifying distributions will be tax free. • Annuities --You pay money to an annuity issuer (an insurance company), and the issuer promises to pay principal and earnings back to you or your named beneficiary in the future. Annuities generally allow you to elect to receive an income stream for life (subject to the claims-paying ability of the issuer). There’s no limit to how much you can invest, and your contributions grow tax deferred. However, you’ll owe income taxes on the earnings when you start receiving distributions. Tax-advantaged savings vehicles for college For college, tax-advantaged savings vehicles include: • 529 plans --College savings plans and prepaid tuition plans let you set aside money for college that will grow tax deferred and be tax free at withdrawal at the federal level if the funds are used for qualified education expenses. These plans are open to anyone regardless of income level. Contribution limits are high--typically over $300,000--but vary by plan. • Coverdell education savings accounts --Coverdell accounts are open only to individuals with incomes below certain limits, but if you qualify, you can contribute up to $2,000 per year, per beneficiary. Your contributions will grow tax deferred and be tax free at withdrawal at the federal level if the funds are used for qualified education expenses. • Series EE bonds --The interest earned on Series EE savings bonds grows tax deferred. But if you meet income limits (and a few other requirements) at the time you redeem the bonds for college, the interest will be free from federal income tax too (it’s always exempt from state tax). Note: Investors should consider the investment objectives, risks, charges, and expenses associated with 529 plans. Bottom line Though tax considerations shouldn’t be your only investing concern, by putting your money in tax-advantaged savings vehicles and investments when appropriate, you’ll keep more money in your own pocket and put less in Uncle Sam’s. Most potato salads are summer fare only, but this warm potato salad goes over year ‘round. It’s a good way to get the kids to eat their veggies. This is a big batch but it is also good cold out of the fridge. You may have been told that mashed potatoes are a simple carbohydrate, therefore not a healthy choice because they digest quickly and cause a large insulin spike. But what they have neglected to tell you is that not all calories are the same. When simple carbohydrates are blended with healthy fats their glycemic index is somewhat muted because the fats slow down the digestive process. At this point we are left with the fact that this recipe contains a healthy supply of three food groups but that “everything in moderation” can still get us in trouble. Bill’s Mashed Potato Salad 4- lb. potatoes, scrubbed and diced into ½ inch cubes (Please don’t peel them.)

1- Cup celery, diced small

1- Cup bell peppers (any Color), diced small

1- Cup onion, diced small

1- Cup cauliflower and or broccoli small flowerets 1- Jalapeño pepper, seeded and chopped small

2- Cups mayonnaise (approx.)

1- Small pkg. Cream Cheese (3 1/2 oz.), optional

2- Tbsp. butter (optional)

2- tsp. Season salt (I use Alpine Touch.)

1- lb. bacon, fried crisp and crumbled.

Boil the potatoes in water until soft. Drain and mash with the Mayonnaise. You can add the optional Cream Cheese and Butter if you want, but it is not essential. Continue to add Mayonnaise a little at a time until you have a very soft texture (the potatoes will firm up as they cool). Then mix in the vegetables and the crumbled bacon and season to taste. Serve warm. TIPS THAT HELP: Use real mayonnaise, not light mayo or Miracle Whip. Real mayonnaise has eggs in it and they are finally admitting that eggs are a healthy food. If you add the cream cheese, it will give you a smoother finished product and the butter adds that wonderful butter flavor you can’t get any other way. (I use the butter and cream cheese.) When I have run short of mayo, I’ve finished it off with a little half-and-half (not skim milk) to get the consistency I wanted. Make sure veggies are chopped small. You can vary the veggies to your own liking; the recipe is very forgiving. If you like it hot, leave the seeds in the jalapeño. Yukon Gold Potatoes are the best choice for mashed spuds because of their high starch content, but Idaho Russets will work. That’s a 35 percent hit, and that’s how much of your money is going straight down the toilet. Look at it this way. You wouldn’t ask me if it’s okay to borrow money at a 35 percent interest rate to pay off your school loans, right? That would be ridiculous, and this is just as dumb. There are no shortcuts when it comes to getting out of debt, Marcy. Roll up your sleeves and get on a beans and rice budget where every dollar has a name. This will enable you to save money and pay off that debt! ~Dave Dear Dave, My wife and I have our fully funded emergency fund in place, and we’re debt-free, except for the house. She wants to return to school to get a master’s degree and change careers. She’ll be reimbursed up to $7,000 a year. Can we use some of our emergency fund to get things started? ~Kevin Dear Kevin, I’ve got a better idea. Save up the money! You guys are in great shape already. And to me, this opportunity seems like a small investment with a fabulous return. I really like the idea. But you have to be careful when it comes to things like this. You don’t want to get into the habit of calling things emergencies when they’re not emergencies. It’s a great thing, but it’s nowhere near an emergency. I know she’s excited about the possibilities, but I’d just roll up my sleeves, save a little extra for a while and cash flow the classes. She’ll probably get reimbursed for the first classes right after she gets her grades, then you can use the reimbursement check to pay for the next classes, and the next check the next classes. Make sense? I love the school idea, and I’m glad your wife has such a great opportunity. But I don’t want you to take a chance on messing up the progress you’ve made in taking control of your finances. Just take your time and save for those first classes. You’ll be glad you did! ~Dave

Cook stove Compact The trophy wife and I celebrated this Thanksgiving with our daughter, Meagan, and her mini-Kimmel clan in Great Falls. Around nine o’clock Thursday morning, Meagan’s subdivision lost power and with no cook stove in sight, we stuffed the turkey into an electric roaster and hauled it to our motel which happened to have electricity. Nearly a decade ago, a similar mishap struck my middle daughter, Chelsie; her story prompts today’s column. Chelsie, her good friend Katie, and their gang of 10 to 15 college buddies celebrated Thanksgiving in a log house outside of Bozeman, Montana. With the back of Chelsie’s Escort loaded with two, 20-pound turkeys, all the fixings and sufficient adult beverages for a college style Thanksgiving, they pulled up to the house and hauled everything into the kitchen. No sooner had feast preparations begun, when somewhere out in the winter wonderland a car skidded off the icy mountain road and sheared off a power pole. The Bridger Bowl area went dark. “Now what,” Chelsie’s friends moaned thinking their holiday dinner plans were toast—untoasted toast. Chelsie pointed to the old cook stove in the corner of the kitchen and said “Split some wood and I’ll cook dinner with that.” Chelsie had grown up with antique cook stoves; a not-so-modern appliance I purposely installed in both our houses. Because I have many wonderful memories of family meals cooked on the Monarchs in our high mountain, cow camps, I felt it important for my children to learn the cooking techniques of our heritage. Like it was second nature, Chelsie and Katie went straight to work. Soon everyone was peeling potatoes or packing wood and with the fire roaring and the chimney damper nearly closed, the turkeys began slowly roasting in the oven. Time and wood are the two commodities you must have in abundance when preparing a Thanksgiving feast over a cook stove. These Montana Pilgrims had both. Since I am writing about Thanksgiving in a political op-ed column, deviating to the “Mayflower Compact” is a reasonable jump. William Bradford’s compact was drafted and signed by Pilgrims enroute to Plymouth Rock. Signers acknowledged God’s grace and created a simple framework upon which to base a new civilization. It was America’s earliest document where the citizenry granted their consent to be governed; a novel idea later solidified in our “Declaration of Independence.” This leads me to a second and more recent compact, the “Cook Stove Compact;” one with an enormous impact on my life. Marcus Warner, one of Chelsie’s college buddies, was impressed how she whipped up the Thanksgiving feast with the old cook stove. After dinner, their conversation rambled along before concluding with their verbal signing of their “Cook Stove Compact” which states: “If neither of us is married by the age of 26, then we will marry each other.” (Apparently, they had been drinking.) Over his next six years, Marcus joined the Navy and served on the USS Kitty Hawk, a carrier based in Japan. Chelsie finished her undergraduate degree before spending three years at the University of Montana Law School. Ironically, the International Date Line made their dates very infrequent. On January 3rd, 2009, while both were on leave from their respective obligations, Chelsie at the age of 26 and Marcus age 25 ratified their “Cook Stove Compact” in holy matrimony. Today, Marcus is an avionics technician with the Navy’s Blue Angels, so they are based in Pensacola, Florida. Chelsie practices law in the pan handle and they have given me two grandchildren with a third due in February. An entire branch of my family tree may not have had leaves had I not taught Chelsie how to use a wood cook stove and this brings me to my point. Progressives are strangling our great republic. Election results on November 6th show just how deeply their Marxist philosophy has infected the American soul. Like all Marxist states, ours too will collapse once the ruling class exhausts the freebies produced from a government controlled economy. Drive through beautiful downtown Hinsdale, Montana, and you’re likely to stumble across an unlikely gem of the Milk River Valley. This is where Ron Stough has spent the last several years carefully crafting his latest enterprise known as Stoughie’s Bar & Grill. HARLEM: A year after purchasing the business in 2007 Ron added a kitchen and dining room with enough seating for 35 people. Richman Insurance Additionally, he remodeled the bar area to make it more inviting and family friendly to match the atmosphere of the dining LEWISTOWN: area. With seating for a total of 85 people, Stoughie’s Bar & Grill is now able to accommodate large gatherings of the Hinsdale Snowy Mountain Motors townspeople for a variety of occasions. The renovations allowed for an expansion of the menu and drink bar. As Ron states, Hinsdale was “hungry” for an eating Lewistown Rental establishment and bar that everyone could feel comfortable in, so he felt obliged to provide that. Stoughie’s bar is a full service whisky and beer bar with a complete line of canned or bottled beer, wine coolers, and an array of micro brews. The restaurant Duane Sparks Chevrolet has a full menu with steaks, walleye, lobster, ribs and burgers. Homemade soup is served every day, as well as a prime rib special CHINOOK: every Saturday. In spite of a slack deer hunting season in 2011 due to the major deer die-off, this year’s hunting season business Jamieson Motors recovered somewhat; Stough was able to make up for any lack by increasing the options for holiday parties and continually expanding the menu. American Garage, LLC The overhaul of the business worked—the business has seen a steady upward growth curve since. The tiny town of Hinsdale hadn’t enjoyed the luxury of an eating establishment in over 25 years prior to Ron’s expansion of the place, so TURNER: construction was a bit of a gamble. The “build it and they will come” mantra was to be tested to its fullest, but Ron is happy to Reed’s Ag Enterprises ~ report that the area’s farming and ranching community has supported his endeavor wholeheartedly. Stoughie’s also sees regular Turner Supply business from Nemont and the railroad, as well as folks from Saco, Glasgow and Malta areas. HAVRE: Because Hinsdale is such a tight-knit community and has supported his business so well, Ron tries to return the favor. North Star Dodge Stoughie’s serves senior meals twice a week, which is a great social event for the seniors as well as ensures they are getting a well-balanced meal.
