COWBOY POETRY BY H. FRED LIESE Fred Liese makes his home at the edge of Black Coulee near Turner, Montana. Raised on the Big Flat, he finds plenty of “inspiration” in the people and things around him every day, and Fred’s brand of entertainment has earned him a large following throughout the US and Canada.
THE SWEETEST ONE Larry put his rig in gear; He defected to the north. Phyllis was the calling card. She was what pulled him forth.
She advanced into his view His head, it followed her This cowboy starts to salivate His thoughts turned to a blur…
Alberta hills are now their home They reside in wedded bliss With rumors soon to interrupt, The story goes like this.
Then focus seemed to quickly lock This model showed some class Awe and wonder came about As once again she passed.
Larry wandered through the town (This from a likely source) His roving ways, they took a turn He’s on the golfing course.
A list of questions came to be He knew what he must do He invoked the cowboy way; He just followed through.
He has an eye for finer things He peers along the green Then she pops into his view, The finest one he’s seen.
Answers came as questions flew His heart would quickly pound He saw her do a loop de do He saw her turn around.
This was a beauty to behold Her build was quite unique She brought a sparkle to his eye Her shape was nice and sleek.

He said, “The one I have is up in years I nearly have to drag her. That one, she just whirls about… And she’s a rear bagger.” ~Fred Liese for “Tricia’s Trader”, ©2013

Small Businesses...Keeping Montana Strong!
Just like “It takes a community to raise a child”, it takes small businesses to strengthen a community. Without loyal communityminded businesses, many Montana towns would be nothing more than a happy memory. These dedicated companies consistently provide jobs, industry, donations and volunteer services to the patrons who support them. They know that without a healthy economy in their town, their own companies will suffer, so they give back faithfully....When you see them be sure to say, “Thanks!”
Supporting the communities we work in... MULTI-CITY: Ezzie’s Wholesale

RadioShack/Todd’s Technology located in downtown Malta.
Owners Eric and Darla Wilke opened RadioShack/Todd’s Technology in December of 1999. The store’s predecessor, Dan’s TV, had been operating from the same location since the mid 1970s. Radio Shack offers various consumer electronics that many of us use on a daily basis, including computers, tablets, TVs, stereos, and phones. Alongside these essentials are a multitude of accessories that support or enhance those products.
RadioShack also provides Dish Network Satellite Television service, Dish Net Internet, and their newest service, Triangle Mobile Cellular.
Since founding the store 14 years ago, Todd’s Technology has grown considerably. When they opened their doors, Eric and Dara had two full-time employees, and DVD players, MP3 players, Havre Muffler & Brake and tablets were almost unheard of. Nowadays, RadioShack has five full-time staff members, and the store continues to keep up Havre Ready Mix, Inc.~ Baltrusch with technology by offering all the latest and greatest gadgets and Construction, Inc. ~Havre Sand & stock multiple products with endless capabilities. It can be difficult to digest the wealth of figures and specs that inevitably accompany any quest to purchase new electronics, but RadioShack/Todd’s Technology helps customers to bridge that gap. “Electronics are a big part of everyone’s lives,” says owner Eric Wilke. “We like to be the go-to place for helping people with today’s electronics. We help out everyone, from the kid looking to buy an RC Car or a new pair of headphones to the baby boomer buying his first iPad.” While Eric and Dara continually meet Malta’s technology demands, they are also active in their community. They are involved in their local Chamber of Commerce and Merchants Committee, as well as various other organizations in and around the community. Investing in new technology, shopping for accessories, and enrolling in new services doesn’t have to be a pain. The friendly, knowledgeable staff at RadioShack/Todd’s Technology are prepared to simplify the process by helping their fellow community members choose the product best suited for them.

Dig right in to our newest regular guest column! Bill Hake invites you to test his recipes and his theories and tell us what you think. And he takes “requests”!
Before we get to a recipe, I feel like doing a little ranting about an article I read last week. The author of this “research article” was promoting a Vegan diet plan, which I don’t agree with, but as long as the “research” is honest I have no problem with anyone making their own decisions as to what kind of food they put in their body. Now, the reason for my rant is that “honest” is not a word that could be used in any conversation about the article. Oh, did I mention he had a very expensive book he was wanting to sell, plus a subscription to a very expensive newsletter that would keep me informed of his latest research? My fallout with the good doctor came when he rated animal fat and protein so devoid of nutrients that you would die of malnutrition if you included any in your diet. He also neglected to explain that a vegan diet is woefully deficient in the 8 essential amino acids the body needs to build muscle. So, for anybody who might be convinced a vegan diet is the way to go, let me point out some research I consider more trustworthy. Dr. Weston Price* lived with Eskimos on the northern coast of Canada and observed that they were healthy and happy on a diet of seal meat and blubber, but they got sick when they moved to inland settlements and ate processed foods. They regained their health when they returned to the coast and resumed their diet of seal meat. Dr. Price found the people with the greatest longevity were the Hunzas who lived in the Himalayan Mountains. Their diet consisted of whatever fruits and vegetables they could raise in their short growing season, and milk and meat from the goats they raised. He also observed that where they lived every step they took was either uphill or downhill, so exercise was an everyday fact of life. Finally, any honest nutritionist or physical therapist will agree that as we grow older maintaining muscle mass and muscle tone is absolutely essential to quality of life. Regular exercise and quality animal protein is the best way to meet that goal, in my opinion. Now let’s cook up some nutritious animal protein. Those of us that buy our beef by the side find all to soon that the tender steaks are running in short supply and we need to use some of the tougher cuts. The best way to tenderize a tough cut of meat is to cook it long and slow (200* or less) in a broth. Crock Pot Swiss Steak 2 lb. round steak, cut into 8 oz. serving size or 1 large onion, chopped bite size smaller 1 Tbsp. garlic, diced small 1/4 c. flour or substitute corn starch 1 can RoTel tomatoes (10 oz.) 2 Tbsp. butter 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 2 c. beef broth 1 tsp. Paprika 1 large bell pepper, chopped bite size Season salt to taste Add butter to a large frying pan over medium high heat. Coat the steak pieces with the flour or corn starch and fry for a few minutes just to brown each side. Add the leftover flour to the pan and stir to blend with the butter. Add the beef broth and stir to loosen the fond on the frying pan. Add the steak and broth to the crock pot then add the next six ingredients and stir all together. Cook on low setting for 4 or more hours. The last hour check gravy for proper consistency, add more water or broth if too thick; if too thin blend 1 Tbsp. corn starch with 1 Tbsp. water and let it cook awhile to thicken. Finally, season to taste and serve over mashed potatoes. *Price, Weston A., DDS. 18th Annual Ag Appreciation Banquet Saturday September 28, 2013 6pm - Havre Ice Dome
Make plans to attend this year’s Ag Appreciation Banquet, hosted by the Havre Chamber of Commerce’s Agri-Business Committee. The Chamber uses this annual event to recognize Montana’s number one industry. According to the Chamber, area businesses sponsor the evening’s activities, bringing together over 400 community members, representing business and agriculture, to acknowledge and to say thanks to the farmers and ranchers of our area that serve as their clients and customers. According to the Chamber’s official website, the evening begins at 6pm with a no-host cocktail hour and the prime rib dinner buffet will start at 7pm. The evening is an excellent opportunity to learn more about agriculture, the people involved and visit with neighbors and friends. For additional information on the Ag Appreciation Banquet, contact the Havre Chamber of Commerce at 406-265-4383 Mon-Fri from 8am-5pm, or email chamber@havremt.net.
Hill County 4-H Sets Goal to Improve Facilities Agriculture and 4-H often go hand-in-hand, and considering the active participation of 4-Hers in and around Havre, it seems logical to note the current project Hill County 4-H is heading up. Two major events are planned to help raise funds for a much-needed new Chuckwagon building at the Great Northern Fairgrounds. First, is a garage sale to be held on Sept. 21 and 22 at the Clothing Building on the farigrounds facility, and then a freewill donation spaghetti feed on Sept. 22nd from 1-4. Take this opportunity to show your support of 4-H in Hill County.

DAVE SAYS:
Who Is Dave Ramsey?
Dave Ramsey is a personal money management expert, popular national radio personality and the author of three New York Times bestsellers – The Total Money Makeover, Financial Peace Revisited and More Than Enough. In them, Ramsey exemplifies his life’s work of teaching others how to be financially responsible, so they can acquire enough wealth to take care of loved ones, live prosperously into old age, and give generously to others.
* Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business. He’s authored four New York Times best-selling books: Financial Peace, More Than Enough, The Total Money Makeover and EntreLeadership. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 5 million listeners each week on more than 500 radio stations. Follow Dave on Twitter at @DaveRamsey and on the web at daveramsey.com.
Dear Dave, My wife and I make together about $100,000 a year, almost $50,000 in an IRA and no debt except for our home. The problem is I’ve had several health issues lately, and we’ve diverted a lot of money we’d put into saving and investing toward medical bills. We also have two kids in high school who want to go to college. Do you think we should cash out the IRA to help send our boys to school? ~Jeff Dear Jeff, You guys make $100,000, and expenses at a good in-state school would be roughly $17,000 a year. If I were you, I’d trim the household budget and make the kids get to work. Look around and see what you can sell, too. There’s no reason you all can’t pull together and cash flow an education for these guys. Providing an education for your kids is a noble pursuit, but you’re low on money right now because of health problems and medical bills. You didn’t do anything wrong to create this scenario. It was just a case of life happening. So, you shouldn’t feel ashamed to sit down with your kids and say, “Okay, serious talk time. You guys know what’s happened recently, so if you want to go to college, you need find a good, affordable institution and start applying for every available scholarship. You also need to plan on working after school and on weekends—now and when you’re off at college—and saving money like crazy. Your mom and I will help out some, but we all have to pull together to make this happen.” There’s a better way to do this than borrowing money and going into debt. There will be times when it’s not easy, but walking around with student loans hanging over your head—or nothing set aside for retirement—is no fun, either! That’s what you guys need to shoot for a year from now! ~Dave Dear Dave, My mom has about $35,000 worth of debt from a $17,000 car and $18,000 in student loans. She makes $20,000 a year. How can she get out of this mess? ~Christina Dear Christiana, No one needs a car that’s worth nearly all of their yearly income. That’s just ridiculous. If you listen to me on the radio, I’m sure you’ve already heard me say what I’m about to say now—sell the car! That will get rid of almost half her debt, then find her a little $2,000 beater to drive until she can save up for a better car. Remember this simple rule: Never buy a car that costs more than half of your annual income. Also, never go into debt to buy a car. Automobiles go down in value like a rock, and you never want that much money wrapped up in something that’s depreciating. We also have an income issue here. Your mom has to do something in the short term to get her income up and pay off debt. A part-time job nights and weekends would be a really good idea. Then, she needs to address her long-term situation with an eye toward a decent job. Whether it’s more formal education or technical training in a particular field, she needs to find a career that will significantly increase her income. ~Dave House for Sale: 2 bedrooms. Reduced to $5,000. Will need to be moved (not included in the price). Has basement access. Kessel Construction could pour basement or foundation (not inl. in price).
