Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor I love Her and You Should Too
Last Tuesday, the trophy wife and I did something we rarely do which is odd as it was so much a part of our dating routine back in high school. Back then we did it at least twice a week with sometimes squeezing in a third goround if the conditions were right. We are empty nesters now and with abundant time alone you would think we would be doing it several times per week, but it’s not the thrill it used to be. The trophy wife seems to enjoy it more than I do and she often suggests we do it for old times’ sake; advances I have turned back by reminding her of our need to paint, peel logs, spray weeds, deworm the horses, fix fence, mow the lawn, pour concrete or shingle the roof. Tuesday night I relented and we did it; we went to the movies. It is not I no longer enjoy my wife’s company. To the contrary, after sharing our lives over 42 years life does not feel right when she is not sitting next to me. My resistance to worship the silver screen hails from two issues. First, movies in the 1970s were simple. From Home For Sale: 4 bdrm, 2.5 bath. Fireplace, wet bar & underground sprinklers. Excellent location, 2 decks & large back patio. Great fenced back yard. Attached garage. Great access & RV parking. Handicap accessible. 1025 18th St., Havre, MT $185,000. Call Janis Flynn Pyrak @ 406-265-9400 8-I
John Wayne flicks to Clint Eastwood’s spaghetti westerns, there were good guys, bad guys, damsels in distress and lots of gunfire with no underlying message. I liked that. Today, the America haters control Hollywood and most two-hour features either directly or indirectly demonize white, heterosexual, free-market capitalists devoted to raising children who love God and country. I simply refuse to give my money to an entity hell bent on destroying me, my family, my faith and my country. In consideration of the above, it is understandable why I’ve only seen a handful of movies over the last two decades. There was “Forest Gump” in 1994, “Passion of the Christ” a decade later, “God’s Not Dead” in April and the documentary “America” this last Tuesday. If you truly love America and like me have hit your toxic limit of seeing her ground into the dirt you must see this film! “America” illuminates events progressives have selectively purged from recorded history. Even the text books I read in high school in the early 1970s had been
sanitized. Now I have seen the truth; a truth which is exactly as I thought all along and this brings me to my point. Beginning in 1776, America’s gift to the world has been the idea no one man has the right to rule another and when set free the human spirit knows no bounds. America is truly the greatest nation in the history of the world and there has been more goodness bestowed upon all humanity because of our great experiment in freedom than any other reason. That is why I love her and you should too. After eight years in college and four sessions incredulously staring across the aisle in the chamber of Montana’s House, I have hit my limit of America haters. They are wrong. No compromise, no tolerance, no mercy; those who hate my country are my political enemy and I will not stand down until they are nothing more than an irritating footnote in history. Please join me. To do anything less would be to cheat America of the glory she truly deserves.

OPPOSING COURT RULINGS LEAD TO CONFUSION OVER HEALTH INSURANCE SUBSIDIES A goal of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is to provide more Americans with access to affordable health care. One of the ways the ACA attempts to make health care affordable is through federal subsidies that reduce insurance premiums and out-of-pocket costs for eligible consumers who purchase health insurance through either state-based or federal exchanges. Two opposing federal appeals court rulings have called the legality of these subsidies into question. How might these court decisions affect you? What is the issue? At issue is a provision in the ACA authorizing subsidies “through an exchange established by the State.” The IRS has interpreted the law to include subsidies for health insurance purchased through either state-based exchanges or federal exchanges. However, the plaintiffs in both cases allege that the IRS interpretation is wrong and that these subsidies should be available only to eligible consumers who purchase insurance through state-based exchanges and not for consumers who purchase insurance through federal exchanges. What did the courts decide? In a 2-1 decision, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, in Halbig v. Burwell, held that subsidies are available only to consumers who purchase health insurance through state-based exchanges and not through federal exchanges. However, within a few hours of the Halbig decision, a threejudge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in Virginia ruled, in the case King v. Burwell, that subsidies are
available to eligible consumers who purchase insurance through either state-based exchanges or federal exchanges. Which states have their own exchanges? According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, 16 states and the District of Columbia operate their own state-based exchanges. These states include California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Idaho, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington. The federal government operates exchanges in the remaining states. Most consumers access federal exchanges through the federal government website, www.healthcare.gov. Will I lose my subsidies? It appears that nothing will change in the short term. The D.C. Circuit court has suspended its ruling pending an appeal by the federal government, which said it intends to appeal to the full D.C. Circuit court (11 presiding justices). In addition, the White House has said subsidies will continue to be offered to those who are eligible through both state-based exchanges and federal exchanges. What might happen next? Aside from a presumed federal government appeal to the full D.C. court, the issue may ultimately be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court, which has already ruled twice on other issues relating to the ACA. Also, two federal lawsuits on the same issue are currently pending in Indiana and Oklahoma.

We are haying right now . . . one of the multitude of reasons that I’ve fallen behind on my blogging. I could also add to that list of reasons swimming lessons, yard word, cow work, laundry, meals . . . and the list goes on and on!! Anyway, my boys love haying . . . . every part of it . . . probably more than the grown-ups do! The boys hitch a ride almost daily -- riding in the big equipment is such a big deal for them. They aren’t too picky as to which vehicle they are in . . . they just want to be part of the crew. Today, there was a rake, and two balers going simultaneously down the fields. My Dad is on the rake . . . along with my little guy. When I say rake . . . I mean a huge, spinning RAKE! It makes quick work of a hay field. Rhett asks and my Dad answers a bazillion questions about what they are doing and why they are doing it as they cruise up. . . . and down the field. The big, whirling rake pulls several small rows of hay that was cut down the day before together to make one big row for the baler. The fields are so rough from all of the mole hills and just the natural topography. I honestly can’t believe how long this little guy will go bouncing inside that tractor. . . . he is only 4 years old! But even through a dusty window -- you can see the joy on their faces! Papa and Rhetty make quite a pair . . . they are both an important part of the crew! After the rake does its job, the balers start up the rows. Mike is driving one baler . . . he is the lucky guy with the beloved John Deere! The big baler gobbles up the freshly raked hay and rolls it up into a bale. As the boys are quick to point out . . . when you hear two beeps inside the cab, that means the bale is ready to be kicked out of the baler . . . and they are absolutely right! My brother is driving the other tractor and baler. He has my oldest as his co-pilot. It is not the most comfortable ride . . . especially in the Ford tractor. Not only is it rough, but it is a bit crowded . . . only a kid who really wants to be there wouldn’t complain! He pays attention to every detail and every sound in that tractor cab during the baling process and listens so carefully as things are explained. Today, he is not just a little tag-along . . . he is definitely a part of the crew. Haying season is very important on the ranch . . . it is an intense month or so of work for everyone . . . it is preserving the harvest for the winter feeding of the animals . . . it is the one (and only) time of year where you hope for no rain until the hay is baled . . . and, like so many times on the ranch, it is a time of working together to make it all happen. It is all about being part of a crew. ~Lady & the Ranch To read more Lady and the Ranch, visit her blog about ranch and family life at www.ladyandtheranch.com.

Dentist Appointment A man and his wife walked into a dentist’s office. The man said to the dentist, “Doc, I’m in a terrible hurry. I have two buddies sitting out in my car waiting for us to go play golf. Forget about the anesthetic; I don’t have time for the gums to get numb. I just want you to pull the tooth and be done with it! We have a 10:00 AM tee time at the best golf course in town, and it’s 9:30 already. I don’t have time to wait for the anesthetic to work.” The dentist thought to himself, “My goodness, this is surely a very brave man, asking to have his tooth pulled without using anything to kill the pain.” So the dentist asked him, “Which tooth is it, sir?” The man turned to his wife and said, “Open your mouth, honey, and show him.”!”

I found an article the other day titled, “You Are Fat Because You Eat Too Much”. My, my, what a novel concept; we might be responsible for our own actions. However, it turns out that I was wrong. It’s not our fault after all; it’s those darn Fast Food Restaurants that are causing all the obesity. The thing that is not fair about all of this is that even though our weight problem is their fault, we are the ones who suffer the painful knee and hip joints from carrying all that extra weight, and I suppose we’ll also be stuck with the Type 2 Diabetes when it sets in. Now, seriously, folks, what kind of idiot does it take to blame Burger King et. al. for our obesity? I can guarantee you if you don’t give them your money they won’t give you their burgers and fries. On a more serious note, I am surprised and dismayed at the lack of understanding of what constitutes a healthy diet, which, of course, is a subject for a very large book and therefore prevents us from covering it with any depth here. There are many diets out there, and they all come with a price. Some are healthy. Some are not. It is your responsibility to know the difference. If you pick the wrong one it is you who will pay the price down the road. A short short-course on diet should include. 1) All food groups in moderation with lots of variety. 2) As much raw, natural, unprocessed food as possible. 3) Cooked food should be cooked at the lowest temperatures possible. The higher temperatures used in frying and grilling oxidize the carbon molecules, creating free radicals. Free radicals cause inflammation. Over time excessive inflammation wears down our immune system and opens the door earlier to all the diseases of aging. If done right, soup is the healthiest cooked food you can prepare for your family. You can add great variety to soups; the nutrients leached out of food in the cooking process are consumed with the broth; and the food being cooked in water never exceeds 212*F, so it doesn’t reach oxidizing temperatures. The most flavorful and healthful aspect of preparing soup is the broth. You can use canned broth but it is loaded with too much salt, which isn’t a very healthy choice. I prefer to make my own broth with soup bones. You can use ham hocks for ham and bean soup; whole chicken or backs only for chicken noodle; and beef bones for beef vegetable. Put the bones with meat in a pot and cover with water, add 1/2 tsp salt and 1/4 cup vinegar per gallon of water (this helps leach the healthy calcium out of the bones and the vinegar cooks off). Bring to a boil, then turn down to a simmer and in about 2 hours take the bones out and remove the meat. (If you leave the meat on the bones for the whole process it will turn to mush.) Return the bones to the pot and continue to simmer for at least 8 hours more, adding water as needed. This is a long process so I try to do it in big batches then divide the broth into serving sizes in zip lock bags and freeze it. If you like a more clear broth, strain it through some cheese cloth before you bag it. You can also cut up the meat you removed and divide it into the bags with the broth. This way you have broth ready on a moment’s notice. Save your beef and pork bones for your pets; they will love them. Throw the chicken bones away, however, as they can be dangerous for pets. In the next column we will make some soup with our broth. You won’t very often see soup bones at the meat counter, so you might have to ask the butcher for them. If you butcher your own meat, save all the bones you trim out and make broth, as that is the best part of the animal. Well, almost!

DEAR DAVE, What’s the difference between a Chapter 7 bankruptcy and Chapter 13 bankruptcy?? ~Claudia Dear Amy, Chapter 7 bankruptcy is what most people think about when they hear the word “bankruptcy.” It’s total bankruptcy, almost like dropping an atomic bomb on your entire financial picture. Virtually all of your unsecured debt (except student loans, child support and money owed to the IRS) is wiped out. These things are not bankruptable. About 98 percent of the time, creditors of your other unsecured debt — things like credit cards and alike — get nothing. Items that are secured debt, such as your car or house, are treated a little bit differently. If you’re behind on payments, you may be allowed to get current. In most cases, banks will allow you to re-sign in a process called reaffirming the debt. Chapter 13 bankruptcy is a payment plan structured over five years. In it, you have to pay all of your secured debt. If it has a lien on it, you pay 100 percent to keep the item. You also have to pay a portion of your unsecured debt. Again — like in Chapter 7 — debt to the IRS, child support and student loans don’t go away. For any other unsecured debt, you can pay a percentage of what’s owed. An overall payment plan is developed, and you make those payments for five years. I’m not a big fan of either one.! ~Dave DEAR DAVE, Do you think it’s unreasonable to ask my 76-year-old husband to have a will drawn up? He had one made when we lived in Florida, but we moved to Georgia. He won’t do it, because he says wills aren’t recognized in Georgia. ~Cam Dear Tony, Wills aren’t recognized in Georgia? Where did he get his legal advice, in a bar or pool hall? Okay, let’s straighten this out. The will he had drawn up in Florida wouldn’t be recognized in Georgia, but he could have one made in Georgia that would be absolutely valid and legal. Everyone: No matter where you live, you need a will. If you die without a will in place, your family has to go through the court and jump through all sorts of hoops to settle the estate. The process can take several months. No one should leave their loved ones in that kind of predicament, when having a will drawn up is such a simple an inexpensive process. Everyone needs a will, Cam. Human beings have a 100 percent mortality rate, okay? No one is getting out of this thing alive. You need a will, a full estate plan with specific instructions on what to do with all your stuff after you die! ~Dave For Sale: Horses: Paints & Quarter horses, all ages, large & beautiful colors, several palomino paints, palomino stud, many on website: 4cspainthorses.com. MSU NORTHERN GEARS UP FOR 2014-15 ACADEMIC YEAR WITH FUNDRAISING PUSH Montana State University-Northern is currently in the midst of a comprehensive capital campaign to secure funding for a state-of-the-art Auto/Diesel Technology Center that will train students for the high-demand world of diesel technology. In 2013, the Montana State Legislature provided partial funding for construction of a new auto/diesel technology center. Approved at a construction cost of $7.9 million, the Legislature funded $4.9 million, leaving MSUN to raise the remainder of the construction costs through private entities. The building is important to MSUN for multiple reasons. The current structure was originally built in 1952 and fails to meet access requirements for student with disabilities as well as having a deficient ventilation and lighting infrastructure. Additionally, today’s students are going into a hightech environment and they need training in a similar environment. The current facility has virtually no current technology framework. With a new building, MSUN will be better able to address critical industry shortages. For example, in Montana alone, it is projected that 729 positions in construction, transportation, and extraction—industries which need trained diesel professionals—will be generated between 2011 and 2021. This new building will allow MSUN to virtually double its enrollment, from a fall 2013 high of 287 to a projected capacity of 500. Better facilities will also allow MSUN to contribute significantly to statewide initiatives in workforce development. The diesel technology program at MSUN is known nationally for its quality—both in instruction and in the training provided its students. The building is vital to the future of the program, for enrollments are at an alltime high. As a result, MSUN has made raising the necessary dollars for construction to be a top priority. Montana State University Northern Alumni Foundation is an independent non-profit organization under the Internal Revenue Service Code 501(c)3. The foundation exists for the support of the University through financial and volunteer support. Gifts can be sent to MSUN Alumni & Foundation P.O. Box 1691 Havre, Mt. 59501. For more information on gift types and the Montana Income Tax Credits for qualified gifts please call 406-265-3711. Your support is very much appreciated.
TORGERSON’S AND CASE IH - BUILDING THEIR PARTNERSHIP WITH MSU-NORTHERN.
Heydon Overhead Doors, Inc. Rudyard, MT (406) 355-4114
(800) 490-4114 We are proud to support MSU-Northern!
As many of you know, each year Torgerson’s provides MSUN with over $1,000,000 of equipment for their students to use for their labs and projects. On, April 17, 2014, Torgerson’s and Case IH donated $20,000 in tools and accessories to MSUN to provide them with the tools needed to equip one of their shop bays, which will now be known as the “Torgerson/Case IH Bay”. MSU has become Torgerson’s number one source of Service Technicians as well as a great source for other key employee positions. We are happy to continue this relationship and very thankful for the staff and students at MSUN for their support and enthusiasm. The students and staff were extremely impressed with what Torgerson’s and Case IH gifted them and look forward to continuing working with the company in the future.
