DAVE SAYS: Who Is Dave Ramsey? Dave Ramsey is a personal money management expert, popular national radio personality and the author of three New York Times bestsellers – The Total Money Makeover, Financial Peace Revisited and More Than Enough. In them, Ramsey exemplifies his life’s work of teaching others how to be financially responsible, so they can acquire enough wealth to take care of loved ones, live prosperously into old age, and give generously to others.

DEAR DAVE, My wife and I are debt-free, and we’re ready to start building our first home. We’re a little short on cash to make the 20 percent down payment you recommend, but we do have a fully funded emergency fund in place. Would it be okay to take a little out of our emergency fund to make up the difference? ~Chris Dear Chris, For Sale: 3 Yearliing Bulls, 2 Angus Bulls (Goes Back To Sitz Upward), 1 Sim Angus (Goes Back To Olie). Call JR Lund, 406-428-2055. 5-I

For Sale: 53' dry van semi trailer; 43' tri-axle spring-ride belly dump; inverter hay rake; stuker for small square baler. Call 406-768-7395. 5-I

Well, you didn’t give me exact numbers here. I don’t know how short a little short is, and I don’t know how big your emergency fund is. If you use a little of your emergency fund to round off the 20 percent and then you have an emergency, where are you going to be? I recommend always having three to six months of expenses set aside for emergencies. If you’ve got $50,000 in your emergency fund and you use $10,000 of it, you’ll be fine. But anything that leaves you with less than three or four months of expenses stashed away would worry me. That’s the way you’ve got to look at it. Just use a little common sense with the numbers. I’d love for you to put down 20 percent because you’d avoid private mortgage insurance (PMI), which runs about $75 a month per $100,000 borrowed. It costs you a lot of money if you don’t put down 20 percent. You should try to do that if possible, but don’t be irresponsible with your emergency fund in the process. Your emergency fund, when it’s there, tends to keep emergencies away. When it’s not there, you have a tendency to attract emergencies and your life starts to sound like a sad country song! ~Dave DEAR DAVE, I’ll be getting out of the military soon, and I want to open a coffee roastery in civilian life. I had planned to work at an established place like Starbucks for a while so I can learn the business. Recently, I’ve become concerned with this idea from an ethical point of view. Can you give me some guidance? ~Wayne Dear Wayne, First, thank you for your service. The fact that you have enough integrity to even think about this means you’re a conscientious, honest person. I think you’re going to be okay. Making and serving coffee is not a proprietary set of information. It’s done all over the world by lots of people, so you’re not violating any ethics by doing that. Now there would definitely be something wrong with you stealing another company’s exact recipes or logo, but I think you already knew that. There’s nothing wrong with learning how to make different coffee drinks that are made all over the world. Starbucks doesn’t have a corner on that. There are coffeehouses all across America these days, so there’s no ethics breach. Just understand what’s proprietary about a company or a brand, and don’t duplicate that. Best of luck to you, sir! ~Dave * Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. He has authored seven best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 12 million listeners each week on 575 radio stations and multiple digital platforms. Follow Dave on the web at daveramsey.com and on Twitter at @DaveRamsey.

MEET THE PARENTS

A young man looking to get married asked his friend. "Every woman I bring home to meet my parents, my mother doesn't like." "Oh, that's easy," his pal replied. "All you have to do is fi nd someone who is just like your mother." "I did that already," he said, "and that one my father didn't like."

A PICNIC FUNNY

The minister's little six-year-old girl had been so naughty during the week that her mother decided to give her the worst kind of punishment. She told her she couldn't go to the Sunday School Picnic on Saturday. When the day came, her mother felt she had been too harsh and changed her mind. When she told the little girl she could go to the picnic, the child's reaction was one of gloom and unhappiness. "What's the matter? I thought you'd be glad to go to the picnic." her mother said. "It's too late!" the little girl said. "I've already prayed for rain." 2000 Country Club Road * Turner, MT 59542 Phone 800-756-1817 Email: office@triciastrader.com www.TriciasTrader.com FAX: 888-796-8498

Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor by Krayton Kerns, DVM, former State Rep. HD 58

Flying the Friendly Skies of United

United Airlines stepped in it when they dragged a reluctant and bleeding volunteer off their plane under the watchful eye of passengers bearing smartphones. Facebookers had an electronic heyday and I too jumped on the bandwagon, but rather than the internet, I scribbled United memes on the flipside of my old campaign signs. Here is the story. This weekend, while celebrating my 60th birthday, my entire family plus friends, gathered in my back pasture for the inaugural Kerns Killer 5K run. The 3.1-mile course travels through the sagebrush flats, climbs and descends the butte three times before returning to my hangar. Directly under the redwood sign displaying the course map, I stuck a recycled campaign sign announcing, “Age group winners receive: 1) Complimentary re-run, or 2) Overbooked United Airline flight anywhere in the USA.” Of the 60 or so competitors, none voluntarily collected either prize. I scattered inspirational and not-so-inspirational repurposed campaign signs around the course, such as on the first major climb where I welcomed everyone to the “United Airlines training camp.” On the second climb, I cheered runners to “Run like a Border Collie, or sit in the pickup and chew on the seatbelts.” Halfway up the final climb my sign read “Suck It Up Buttercup… United Airlines complaint department motto.” I apologize if I hurt the selfesteem of any United Airlines employee; my words are meant in jest. Suck it up buttercup and this brings me to my point. United Airlines missed a golden opportunity to celebrate free-market capitalism rather than forcibly removing four passengers from their flight to Kentucky. The company’s action was within the parameters of every ticket’s fine print, but had they put four seats up for auction, four people would have likely jumped ship at $1000 travel vouchers. The law of supply and demand will set a price satisfying all parties, but as it sits now, only the attorneys are smiling. On Saturday, May 6th, I will be speaking at the Union County GOP political rally in La Grande, Oregon. Air travel to the hinterlands was spotty before United Airlines began tossing passengers. It would take all day to fly there and all day to drive, but unless the trophy wife bloodies my nose and bumps me out of the car, driving is more reliable. There is an old pilot’s adage “time to spare, go by air, but if you have to be there, drive.” United just made it timely.
