DAVE SAYS: Who Is Dave Ramsey? Dave Ramsey is a personal money management expert, popular national radio personality and the author of three New York Times bestsellers – The Total Money Makeover, Financial Peace Revisited and More Than Enough. In them, Ramsey exemplifies his life’s work of teaching others how to be financially responsible, so they can acquire enough wealth to take care of loved ones, live prosperously into old age, and give generously to others.

For Sale: 30% off all shotguns & 20% off 270 7mm 300mm DEAR DAVE, mag & .30-06. 720 1st St. W., I’m 58 years old and have nothing set aside for retirement. My wife and I are on Baby Havre 59501. 265-3342. 9-II Step 2 of your plan and paying off debt. We have $37,000 in debt not counting our home, and

five kids still at home. We have a household income of $73,000 a year, and were wondering if we should go ahead and start Baby Step 4, investing for retirement, instead of paying off the debt. ~ Dan

DEAR DAN,

Need to Buy or Sell? Hire a realtor you can trust. Greytak Realty will help take the stress out of buying or selling your home, farm/ranch or commercial property. Call our office at 406-357-2111; Clint Greytak 2623170 or Bob Sharples 945-5655. www.GreytakRealty.com 1-II

Need Hay? Montana Hay Company has hay available, inventory changing daily. Large rounds, big squares, all varieties. Don't pay for it until it arrives, see it before you buy it. Trucking avail using hay trains. Call for pricing, 406-670-6551. 8-I:11-I

Your most powerful wealth-building tool, both mathematically and factually, is your income. The most powerful way to build wealth — whether it’s playing catch-up at 58 or starting at 28 and becoming wealthy over the long haul — is to have your income available. That means it’s not flying out the door every month to make debt payments. Fifty-eight is not old, but you do have to get busy if you want to retire with dignity. I’d really lean into this debt and make it disappear in the next 18 months. I’m talking about sticking to a tight budget, living on rice and beans, and selling so much stuff around the house those kids think they’re next! After that, you’ll have to throw every dime you can into building an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses. And after that, you’ll have to spend 10 years going crazy saving for retirement by pouring about $12,000 a year into good mutual funds. Can you do that and win, and by “win” I mean retire with some dignity? Yes, you can. But it’s not doable if you’ve got $37,000 in debt hanging around your neck! ~ Dave

DEAR DAVE,

My husband and I have been saving, and we’re ready to buy our first home. We found a place we both love and can afford if we do a 30-year mortgage instead of a 15-year mortgage. Should we wait and save more for a down payment so we can afford a 15-year mortgage, or go ahead and do the 30-year deal? ~ Faith

DEAR FAITH,

Good financial decisions can be defined as things that help you win with money over the long-term. Thirty-year mortgages are a trap. They don’t help you build wealth, and they keep you in debt. On the other hand, 15-year mortgages get you out of debt a lot faster, and being out of debt frees up your largest wealth-building tool — your income. I would never take out a home loan where the payments are more than a fourth of your monthly take-home pay on a 15-year, fixed-rate mortgage. My advice is to either wait and save more money, or maybe look for a less expensive home in a different area. I know you want a home, Faith. There’s nothing wrong with wanting your own house. But I don’t want your home to have you. When you get house fever, it’s easy to lock yourself into a bad deal that will follow you around and drain your wallet for decades! ~ Dave * Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. He has authored seven best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 13 million listeners each week on 585 radio stations and multiple digital platforms. cuPcAkeS A young man was visiting his brother and sister-in-law for Christmas dinner. As he arrived at their house he found his young nephew, Mikey, helping them bake some cupcakes. After they were done, his sister-in-law allowed Mikey to put the icing on. When the boy had fi nished, he brought them to the table. "The cupcakes look delicious, Mike." his uncle said. He took a bite and said, "Mikey these are so good." As he fi nished cupcake and took another, he again complimented his little nephew. "The cupcakes look beautiful, Mikey," his uncle said. "How did you get the icing so neat?" His nephew replied, "It was easy. I just licked them." The uncle turned pale. He pointed to the plate of cupcakes. "You licked all of these?" Mikey replied, "Well no. After a while my tongue got tired, and I got the dog to help."

Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor by Krayton Kerns, DVM, former State Rep. HD 58

Chewing the Fat Several years back, we were visiting my son Tyler and his bride, Jill, in Provo, Utah. Their first baby was up and sucking, so I suggested they replace their flashy, Audi sportscar with a used mini-van. “Only fat people drive mini-vans,” they shrieked. Ignoring them, I extolled minivan virtues when we pulled alongside a Ford Aerostar at a stop light. Filling the Ford’s pilot and co-pilot seats were two of the largest people in Utah and each was ravenously stuffing their faces from a KFC bucket perched on the dashboard. Tyler and Jill roared at my unfortunate timing, but here is why I told this. A recent study by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation showed Montana has an obesity rate of 25.5 percent; three times higher than the 8 percent recorded in 1990. Apparently, waist lines are mimicking fire lines in Big Sky Country, but on the bright side, 42 other states score above us on the fat scale. This is a big deal, but fixable as seen in Venezuela which recently became the Jenny Craig of South America. In the 2000s, Hollywood leftists swooned over Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez, portraying him as champion of the downtrodden. Chavez enacted wealth redistribution programs along with cooperative farming and strict price controls on basic foods. The little people cheered, but Venezuela’s agriculture productivity plummeted. To stop the collapse of their collectivist food pyramid, the ruling class rationed rations. Hugo’s protégé, Nicolas Maduro continued social giveaways under his newly created Vice Ministry of Supreme Happiness. (No joke—that is its name.) By February 2016, Venezuela’s shelves were bare and today there are reports of emaciated street people harvesting dogs and zoo animals for food and this brings me to my point. The average Venezuelan unintentionally lost 19 pounds in 2016 due to their state sponsored famine. If America wholly adopts progressivism, we too could unintentionally lose 19 pounds after consuming our supply of res dogs and zoo critters. How wonderful. Controlling food is the fastest way to force submission—a socialist technique Stalin used to exterminate six million Ukrainians in 1932. Free market capitalism produces food so abundantly, obesity becomes the greatest public health threat. With a few exceptions, with liberty your waistline is your choice. Starving the unwashed only occurs with progressivism, either purposely as in Stalin’s case, or secondarily after removing profit from the ag equation. Think about it. To close the loop, Tyler and Jill’s fourth baby is up and sucking, they moved to Billings, just bought a used mini-van, and next week are launching a 30-day whole food, healthy-eating challenge. Need I say more?

RECOVERY IS POSSIBLE

Is it possible to fully understand mental illness is if you’ve never experienced it yourself? Maybe. Maybe not. It might be safe to say those who’ve struggled with mental health issues personally can relate with others facing similar issues much more easily. This is the concept behind a new recovery-oriented mental health service establishing roots in Montana. The Montana Peer Network is a network of over 800 individuals across Montana in recovery from mental health, substance abuse and or addiction struggles. MPN provides information, education, training, peer support and resources across the state using their own “lived experiences” in long term recovery. A “recovery movement” in the making, it is on its way to becoming a national shift from the maintenance model of behavioral health to a recovery model, where every individual has access to care, choices, and the message that “recovery is possible”. A member based organization with a board of directors and staff, the Montana Peer Network office is located in beautiful Livingston, Montana at 109 East Lewis Street. The 501(c)(3) non-profit is accepting new board members and always welcomes contributions and sponsors. MPN is peer run, by people in recovery, who promote the recovery concepts of hope, selfadvocacy, education, peer support, personal responsibility and resiliency, as they believe these concepts are universal regardless of what recovery program a person may choose. The MPN website www.mtpeernetwork.org offers a way to find resources based on ZIP code, and strongly promotes the message, “Recovery is possible.” The website also has a list of resources for trainings and certifications, mind and body health, newsletters, and podcasts. Additionally, there is information about the recovery coach outreach program currently being piloted in Gallatin County. Recovery coaching is an outreach program that operates in communities as a form of prevention designed to engage individuals in recovery before high end crisis services are required. This one-on-one, strength-based support involves non-judgmental active listening, wellness and recovery planning, building recovery skills and resourcing community services with an emphasis on the 8 Dimensions of Wellness. Other communities may bring a recovery outreach program model to their own area by calling the MPN at (406) 5511058. by Tricia Kimmel

Grain markets were all lower, led by corn and soybeans as USDA gave another bearish surprise in their latest supply/demand report. Higher yields and production estimates for the row crops caught the trade by surprise and pushed prices lower. Wheat is getting pressure from a massive Russian crop, their biggest on record, with Russian exports already pressuring world prices. With the Northern Hemisphere’s wheat harvest nearing completion, the trade is focusing on the Southern Hemisphere where we see Australia continuing in the dry pattern that has been present since seeding. Their wheat production estimates are falling quickly, offsetting much of the increase from Russia. Cattle prices were higher, despite the cash market continuing to erode last week. With a large corn crop coming, demand for lighter weight calves in the Midwest is expected to be strong this fall. The fed cattle market is fi nding seasonal support and improving demand as summer winds down and cooler temps encourage more beef consumption. Energy markets were lower on increasing supplies and a reduction in demand. The disruptions caused by two major hurricanes is still being felt and the market is slowly sorting it out. However, with refi neries closing down throughout the Houston region during Hurricane Harvey, crude oil consumption took a temporary, but sharp decline, creating a backlog and supply build-up. The stock market soared to new all-time highs, as employment continues strong and on the likehood that rebuilding homes and infrastructure after the hurricanes will create demand for numerous products and services, thus helping those companies’ stocks as well. With little sign of infl ation, precious metals stalled after a two-month rally. THIS IS A SOLICITATION. And just like that, you're back where you were before you started scrolling. If this shortcut doesn't work, it's because you changed the active cell while browsing (you clicked in another cell).Wyoming college fairs which are called the WAO Planning Days (WAO stands for Wyoming Admissions Officers).
