Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor by Krayton Kerns, DVM, former State Rep. HD 58

Behind the Scenes A decade ago, I viewed the Arlington Memorial depicting the Marines raising the flag on Iwo Jima. The size of the massive sculpture is inspiring by itself, but this monument so captures Americans putting love of country above self, viewing it at twilight is truly a numbing experience. I felt so small compared to the sacrifice made by the thousands upon thousands who answered liberty’s call and left home to never return. Here is why this is timely. Unless you only swallow the pablum you are spoon fed by CNN or MSNBC, you have likely seen photos and videos of the massive Trump re-election rally in Orlando, Florida. Patriots began mustering 48 hours in advance to secure tickets and once inside, the Amway Center was awash with red MAGA hats in a sea of red, white and blue. The nearly 20,000 patriots beamed love of country and in less than 24 hours their infectious enthusiasm triggered a record breaking 24.8 million dollars in campaign contributions. The Amway Center was filled with flag-waving butchers, bakers and candlestick makers, the ordinary Americans who get up every morning to provide for and raise their families consistent with God’s word in His republic. Let’s contrast this gathering with a progressive campaign rally. We need not name any candidate because leftists are ideological, cookie-cutter replicas differing only in Body Mass Index, sexual perception and selected hair color. President Trump loves America and the freedom for which she stands, while progressives hate America as much, or more than they hate the president. Trump encourages his countrymen to be the best they can be. Progressives convince followers they are all victims. The president promises to get government out of the way while progressives promise government is the way. Patriots rear their children to become responsible adults while progressives sacrifice theirs to Molech and this brings me to my point. A single photograph captured the heroics of five Marines and one Navy Corpsman raising the colors on Iwo Jima, but the bigger story behind the iconic scene was the 6,800 patriots who died capturing the Japanese island. Similarly, President Donald Trump figuratively posted colors in Florida but bigger than him is a nationwide movement of freedom loving patriots who refuse to sit back and let the left destroy the dream called America. Beginning this Independence Day, rally around the flag or forever wish you would have.

Enjoying Everyday Life Joyce Meyer

What It Means to Be “Holy” As God’s children, we are called to live holy lives. The Bible says, “Just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do” (1 Peter 1:15 NIV). But what exactly does it mean to live a holy life these days? It’s important that we take some time to think about this because there is such a lack of integrity in today’s society, with much compromise, dishonesty and injustice. We all face temptations every day, but instead of taking personal responsibility for our choices, we tend to blame others or our circumstances for our negative behavior. And many people who live this way go to church each Sunday and come out feeling like they have done their Christian duty for the week. But the truth is going to church every week won’t make you holy any more than sitting in a garage will make you a car! This brings me back to my original question: What does it mean to live a holy life? From the Inside Out Hebrews 10:10 says that “we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all” (NIV). This verse is saying we are made holy from the moment Jesus comes into our hearts. Just by His presence, He makes us a holy place for His Spirit to dwell. We cannot do this ourselves. No amount of church attendance, Bible study or prayer can make us holy. But if God is in our life, then holiness is there. And He begins working in us to make that holiness apparent on the outside…in our everyday living. He works in us individually, bringing brokenness and humility, and ultimately, we begin to display His goodness in our lives (see Hebrews 12:10-11). Our only responsibility is to be obedient to the Holy Spirit as the work is in progress. Committed to a Holy Life The ability to live a holy life comes from having a personal relationship with Christ and being obedient to Him, not from adhering to a bunch of rules. In other words, it’s not about following a list of do’s and don’ts, but following the leading of the Holy Spirit. As believers in Christ, the Spirit of God is living in us and that means we have been made holy. But in order for our behavior to reflect the characteristics of Christ, we have to let Him work His holiness into our everyday lives, changing our mindsets, attitudes, desires and actions. As that happens, we become better representatives of His heart for the world around us (see Galatians 5:22-23). We must learn how to trust the Holy Spirit to help us lay down our pride and our own self-serving ideas about how to run our lives. Yes, it hurts sometimes while we are changing, but these growing pains will ultimately bring us a much better life than we could ever have on our own. It’s important to understand that God is not as concerned with changing our circumstances as He is with changing us. God loves you and He always has your best interest at heart, so you can be assured that He will never do anything to harm you. And when you experience the pain of changing, you can be confident that God is doing a good work in you. This is an inside job, meaning it’s a work that goes on inside us personally, privately and individually, so it’s up to each of us to get serious about our relationship with God. It’s up to every one of us to do what Colossians 3:12 says to do: “Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” (NIV). People Are Watching God wants to work in your life so people can see Jesus in you. We need to shine the light of God’s love through our behavior, expressing our faith by our works, doing things for others. We can actually be the answer to some of the prayers we pray simply by obeying God’s Word and the leading of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Instead of trying to follow a list of religious rules and regulations, we should be enjoying our life in Christ. When the world looks at us, they should see what God’s doing inside of us by what they see on the outside. Yes, we need to go to church—to be encouraged, edified, strengthened and instructed. We need to spend time each day in prayer and studying the Bible. And then we need to live out what God is doing in us—from the inside out! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For more on this topic, order Joyce’s four-CD series Sit, Stand, Walk, Run. Ranching For Profit Blog - Dave Pratt Healthy Land, Happy Families and Profitable Businesses www.ranchingforprofit.com

You Might Be Ranching For Profit If … You might be ranching for profit if your spouse doesn’t have to work in town so you can have health insurance. If you are making a profit you ought to be able to pay yourself whatever it would cost to replace yourself and the business ought to be able to provide a benefits package, including health insurance. The sad truth is that most ranches are subsidized with off farm income. When you are ranching for profit there is no such thing as free labor. You might be ranching for profit if you don’t put up hay. Most ranchers shouldn’t be putting up hay. They don’t have the scale to justify owning equipment. If they grow hay, they ought to hire someone else to put it up. Can’t find anyone reliable in your area to put it up? Sounds like an opportunity to start a profitable custom hay enterprise. Of course, you should hire someone else to drive the tractor. You might be ranching for profit if you don’t feed hay. There are some profitable ranchers who feed a little hay, but they don’t feed much (generally less than ¼ ton per cow per year). To minimize or eliminate hay we need to match our production schedule to the forage cycle. With cows this usually means calving a month after the grass starts growing and/or creating seasonal enterprises. If you have deep snow for 4 months, maybe it is time to admit that you don’t live in cow-country … at least not year-round cow country. You might be ranching for profit if your enterprise mix matches the drought risk of your ranch. If you don’t have the grass, you better not have the mouths. You can’t feed your way out of a drought. You’ve got to destock. Destocking becomes less painful when your enterprise mix matches the drought risk of the ranch. This means having a “keeper herd” and a “disposable herd” (a group that you can easily liquidate). If the drought is too severe you may need to destock some animals in the keeper herd. You’d be smart to make a destocking plan before the drought hits to take some of the emotion out of the destocking decisions. You might be ranching for profit if you had to rent your ranch from a neighbor. Some folks own their land outright and don’t make land payments or pay rent. If that’s you, congratulations. It’s a whole lot easier for your operation to cash flow without having to write that big land check every year…but if you are ranching for profit, you would be able to pay it if you had to. The operating business should be thought of as separate from the land business, and that operating business ought to be paying market rate rent for the land it uses. If your place is really profitable, you ought to be able to make it even more profitable by renting the neighbor’s and expanding. You might be ranching for profit if you know the 3 Secrets for Increasing Profit™. There are only three things you can do to increase profit in any business, including your ranch, keep overheads low, improve the gross margin per unit and increase turnover. The real trick is to know which of the three secrets applies to you right now and what to do about it. If you are ranching for profit you’d know your numbers and you’d know what they mean. If you aren’t ranching for profit, I hope we’ll see you at an Ranching for Profit school soon so you can get started.

DAVE SAYS: Who Is Dave Ramsey? Dave Ramsey is a personal money management expert, popular national radio personality and the author of three New York Times bestsellers – The Total Money Makeover, Financial Peace Revisited and More Than Enough. In them, Ramsey exemplifies his life’s work of teaching others how to be financially responsible, so they can acquire enough wealth to take care of loved ones, live prosperously into old age, and give generously to others.

DEAR DAVE, I was recently offered an opportunity to participate in a hands-on stock trading class. The problem is we don’t have the $6,500 registration fee just lying around. My husband and I are on Baby Step 4 of your plan, so what would you think about us borrowing that amount from our emergency fund? We would still have three months of expenses set aside after paying for the class. -Camille DEAR CAMILLE, I don’t know the exact course you’re talking about, but I do know something about the concept of buying and selling stocks, or day trading, if you want to call it that. I can tell you all the research shows 78 to 84 percent of day traders lose money. And one hundred percent think they won’t be the ones losing out. That includes people who take courses like the one you mentioned. I have found no data points which show, on a consistent level across a broad population, that people who take a course like that become wealthy as a result. Buying and selling single stocks is an ultra-high-risk proposition. That’s why I don’t buy any single stocks. Now, I know some people who buy and sell single stocks as a very small percentage of their financial world. It’s almost like a hobby for them. A couple might actually make a little money from time to time, but it’s not the main focus of their investment strategy. To hear them, it’s like listening to fishing stories. They’re always talking about the one that got away. I wouldn’t waste my money on the course, Camille—especially my emergency fund money. Your emergency fund is for, say it with me, emergencies only! -Dave * Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. He has authored seven best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover.
