Natalie Hannum loves coffee. Many people like to drink coffee, but Hannum takes her love for coffee to a passionate level. When she opened her first grab-n-go coffee shop dubbed The Coffee Hound on First Street in Havre, Hannum knew it was only the beginning of an enduring love affair with the little aromatic bean. Natalie and her husband Darrel recently expanded their enterprise into the art of roasting coffee beans. Production roasting truly is an art, requiring lots of attention to things like heat control, air flow, gas pressure and time. According to Natalie, Darrel is the lead roaster and she assists where she can. Located in the Havre Holiday Village Mall, the address works well for the industrial portion of the business and is not a store-front business currently. Continued on page 2...

Continued from page 1... Right now, the roastery offers three single-origin (one bean) roasts. No blends are offered yet, but that will probably develop. Just as the pair was getting a good start on building the roastery, they received an important phone call. Jana Faber and Bill Dritsulas, owners of the Emporium convenience store and enterprise in Havre, cast their vision for a café and coffee shop at their location, and invited the Hannums to help launch and run the new, yet-to-be-built facility. This was in December, and Hannums threw in enthusiastically. Today, the vision is reality. The new brick-and-mortar location officially opened its doors on Thursday, July 25th with a espresso bar and a small menu of salads, wraps, sandwiches, and breakfast. Complete with both walk-in and drive-through service, 406 Roasting Company Café’ is open 7 days a week: Mondays through Fridays from 6:30 in the morning until 6:30 at night, Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sundays from 8:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Natalie is thrilled with the results so far and is encouraged by the volume of people who grace the Emporium properties. As she says, “It’s like its own area code here!” And what’s her favorite way to drink coffee? “Straight brew”, or as most of us would call it, “black”.

Grain markets were under heavy pressure the past two weeks. Improving weather in the Midwest will help both corn and soybeans perform well through the critical pollination season and production estimates are stabilizing after a very difficult planting season. Wheat prices were pulled lower by corn and by the ongoing Northern Hemisphere harvest, which is showing much better yields than last year despite a late heat spell in Europe and the Black Sea that did shave off some top-end yields. The live cattle futures market was little changed after chopping sideways the last several sessions. Cash markets improved while boxed beef held steady. Feeder cattle were slightly lower even with lower corn. Feedlots expect a heavy run of cattle into feedlots during August after a slow placement period during July due to extended good grazing conditions. The Dow ran into notable selling after the Fed lowered interest rates but hinted there wouldn’t be more cuts soon. More selling ensued from the announcement of additional 10% tariffs on Chinese goods. The tariff announcement stoked fears of further slowing economic growth both abroad and domestically, which pressured the energy complex. Precious metals were supported by fears of increasing inflation from the trade war and mounting military tensions with several adversaries.

Ramblings of a Conservative Cow Doctor by Krayton Kerns, DVM, former State Rep. HD 58
Causation, Coincidence and Climate Change For the past two weeks, we hosted a guest from Florida. During JJ’s visit, she and Chelsie camped on the top of the Big Horns, took a speed trip through Yellowstone and Glacier plus caught the rodeo in Cody. Flatlanders visiting Big Sky Country are always entertaining. For the second night in a row, an electrical storm struck western Yellowstone County. Tuesday’s was a real boomer and a nearby flash-bang shot me out of bed to the window to scan the north hills for a grass fire. Seeing nothing, I crawled back in bed but before I drifted off the trophy wife mumbled, “There is a firetruck bouncing up our driveway with its lights on.” Thinking there was a fire, I jumped into my boots, grabbed my headlamp and headed for the door. Chelsie and JJ were already in the driveway visiting with the fire chief as I trotted into the front yard. Before I reached them, they returned to the house chuckling and told me the rest of the story. Our guestrom overlooks the CHS Refinery. Laurel natives pay little notice to the refinery flare as it varies every day. Tuesday nights was a dandy. JJ suddenly noticed the refinery flare for the first time and viewing the flame through the cottonwood trees, she suspected lightning had sparked a fire. Her eight-year-old daughter confirmed she had seen lightning hit the trees. Rather than disturb me, JJ called the fire department prompting the lights and sirens which filled my driveway. Answer me this: Did the electrical storm cause the flare at the refinery? No, it was coincidence, not causative. Do you follow? Just as the lightning storm’s relationship to the refinery flare is coincidental, so is man’s carbon emissions to climate change. If you are a snowflake or buttercup who believes capitalism, resource development and economic expansion affect the climate and therefore are causing global warming, cooling, earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, droughts, blizzards and bacterial antibiotic resistance, you have swallowed a lie. Please ask the nearest person to slap some sense in you. Don’t worry, I’ll wait…did that help? Now to the truth. Ed Berry, PhD published an article in the July 4th edition of the International Journal of Atmosphere and Ocean Sciences and using logic, physics and mathematics he completely disproves the UNIPCC theory on climate change. You can read it at www. edberry.com if you care to learn something or you can continue mindlessly regurgitating socialist climate crisis propaganda. Be ignorant or informed, it is your choice.
Counting Down to School Success In the October edition of Parenting magazine, the Department of Education teamed up with National PTA and Parenting to offer a month-by-month guide for parents and guardians that includes advice, tools, and online resources to help make this school year a great one. To get the school year kicked off right, here are some handy tips from the guide: 1. Reach out to your child’s teachers: Attend meet-theteacher night, orientation or other welcome events, but don’t stop there. Make a point of introducing yourself and learning about class activities and expectations for the year. 2. Get in the groove: Establish healthy at-home routines for school days, such as consistent waking times and gettingready patterns. Decide on a regular homework time, and create a comfortable, quiet workspace. 3. Time things right: Stay on top of everyone’s school, activity, and work schedules with a free online calendar or a smartphone app. 4. Pack smart: Make sure your child’s backpack never weighs more than 10 to 20 percent of his or her body weight; heavy packs can strain developing muscles and joints. 5. Commit to volunteering: With help from parents like you, your school can offer many more programs and services for your kids. Ask about volunteer opportunities in the school community and your children’s classrooms, and check out your school’s parent organization. https://blog.ed.gov/2011/09/counting-down-to-school-success/

Enjoying Everyday Life Joyce Meyer
Fickle Feelings There are some people in this world who are extremely reliable. You can count on them for just about anything and somehow, they’ll always come through. However, I’ve found that many people are not very reliable. Maybe you know someone who is a nice person, but if you ask them to do something, you’re just not sure if they’re going to follow through. In other words, they’re unreliable. I’ve discovered that feelings are a lot like unreliable people—we can’t depend on them to be what we want or need them to be all the time. Not only that, they aren’t necessarily interested in what’s best for us. And they always want to have their way. Feelings get us excited about going shopping when we really don’t have any money to spend. They entice us to eat cheesecake when we’re trying to avoid extra calories and lead us to stay up late working or watching TV when we need to get up early the next day. Then after the damage is done, we have to deal with the consequences. Our feelings are fickle—they change like the wind. Yet it’s amazing how much we let them have their way in our lives. But as believers in Christ, we have something much better and more dependable to follow than our feelings and that’s the Word of God. Conquering Confusion with the Truth When we feel strongly about something in our heart, it’s not always easy for us to determine whether or not we’re really in agreement with God (see Jeremiah 17:9). Thankfully, God’s Word doesn’t leave us lost in confusion. Hebrews 4:12 says that the Word of God is “sharper than any two-edged sword…exposing and judging the very thoughts and intentions of the heart” (AMP). So, if we really want to rise above our feelings, we must let the Word of God be the final deciding factor in our decisions. There will be times when we can’t find a verse for the specific issue we’re dealing with. But we can always pray and ask God for wisdom (see James 1:5). In the meantime, we need to trust Him, be patient and keep on praying. Remember that God is always available to help us live beyond our feelings and do what pleases Him. Set Your Mind to Do What’s Right The first step toward managing our emotions is found in Colossians 3:2. It says, “Set your mind and keep focused habitually on the things above…not on things that are on the earth….” There are many things in this world that could easily affect our minds and emotions and we need to learn how to rise above them all. When negative thoughts are building up and trying to take control of your emotions, take a few minutes to set your mind on God and His Word. It also helps to speak positively about whatever is bothering you. Have a chat with yourself that goes something like this: “My family may not be everything I’d like them to be, but I am thankful I have a family. My house is not as nice as I would like it to be, but it’s still a nice place to live. I don’t see how I’m going to get through this painful situation, but Jesus is with me and He will help me overcome it!” How to Win a Spiritual Tug-of-War Sometimes we want to ask God to instantly change our circumstances when we’re struggling. But the truth is until we learn to be content in every situation we face, we will continue to be tested. Jeremiah 17:10 says, “I, the Lord, search and examine the mind, I test the heart, to give to each man according to his ways, according to the results of his deeds.” There are a few different “buttons” the devil knows he can push to get an emotional reaction out of me, so I make a point to prepare myself before that happens with the Word. I love Psalm 94:12-13. It says, “Blessed [with wisdom and prosperity] is the man whom You discipline and instruct, O Lord, and whom You teach from Your law, that You may grant him [power to calm himself and find] peace in the days of adversity....” You see, the more we discipline ourselves to say no to our feelings and yes to the wisdom of God, the easier it becomes to defeat them in a spiritual tugof-war. I want to encourage you to consistently take time to focus on what the Bible says. It will empower you to control those unreliable emotions and do what is best for you! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For more on this topic, order Joyce’s four-CD series Sit, Stand, Walk, Run. Urbanization leads to food demand increase Population growth and rapid rural-urban migration leads to an increase in demand for more and greater diversity of food. Domestic food supply chains cannot keep up, according to a white paper published by The Economist Intelligence Unit and commissioned by Cargill. Food consumption is forecast to more than double on a per-capita basis in China and South Asia. The paper also said more diverse diets are more resource-intensive, especially when meat is included. Meat accounts for 17% of global calorie intake.

DAVE SAYS: Who Is Dave Ramsey? Dave Ramsey is a personal money management expert, popular national radio personality and the author of three New York Times bestsellers – The Total Money Makeover, Financial Peace Revisited and More Than Enough. In them, Ramsey exemplifies his life’s work of teaching others how to be financially responsible, so they can acquire enough wealth to take care of loved ones, live prosperously into old age, and give generously to others.
DEAR DAVE, I’ve got a couple of friends who were advised by their financial planners not to open college savings accounts for their kids. Their planners told them this would count against their children’s ability to receive financial aid and assistance when it’s time for college. Apparently, these planners told them to put the money into their own retirement accounts. It’s my understanding, however, that both the child’s and the parent’s financial situations are looked into when determining financial aid. Can you please shed some light on this? -Jeanette DEAR JEANETTE, So, if a financial planner told you not to get a job because then you can apply for welfare, are you going to listen to that person? What kind of moron gives financial advice like this? You don’t tell people not to save money for something, just so they can pretend they’re poor! Save whatever money you can, and send your kid to school. Why is that such a difficult concept to grasp? People need to stop looking for tricks and shortcuts, because there aren’t any that will be beneficial in the long run. I’m not going to pose as broke— fraudulently—to get financial aid for my kid. That’s ridiculous! I hope I wasn’t unclear. -Dave * Dave Ramsey is CEO of Ramsey Solutions. He has authored seven best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 13 million listeners each week on 585 radio stations and multiple digital platforms. Follow Dave on the web at daveramsey.com and on Twitter at @DaveRamsey.

Ranching For Profit Blog - Dave Pratt Healthy Land, Happy Families and Profitable Businesses www.ranchingforprofit.com
It’s Hard To Find Good Help … … but it is even harder to find a good boss. I often hear employers complain that it is hard to find good help. I rarely hear them ask how they can be better bosses. Personally, I think most people want to do a good job. I don’t think employees want to be inefficient or wreck equipment. Why then do we have such a hard time finding and keeping highly effective employees? It’s not about the money … well, not all of it anyway. In Drive, a book about the things that motivate us, author Daniel Pink explains that money isn’t a very effective motivator. He says we need to pay people enough so that they are not constantly worried about money and can focus on the work. But once they’ve been paid a living wage, paying people more does not result in more or better work. It’s not just about experience. Experience can be a two-way street. On one hand, it’s nice to have employees who have been around the block and who know what they are doing. On the other hand, if you are doing innovative things, people who have experience using traditional methods may, with the best of intentions, resist and even sabotage change. Nebraska rancher, Robert Brosius, frustrated with the experienced hands he had hired, accepted his Executive Link boards’ advice, “If you don’t want a rotten apple, don’t go to the barrel. Go to the tree.” Robert hired someone straight out of college with no ag background. A couple of months ago when I asked Robert how it was working out, he said, “There’s a lot of things we learn growing-up around cattle that we take for granted. We had to do a lot of training on a lot of things with our guy. A LOT of training on A LOT of things! But we were able to train him to do things our way. We love his energy and drive. We couldn’t be happier with him.” I think that three out of four employee issues are really boss issues. I know that every time I point my finger at someone I find that three fingers are pointing back at me. I think if you asked Michael Gerber, author of the E-Myth Revisited, he would agree. Gerber says, “People are unmanageable.” He says that the boss’s job is to create and then manage the systems people use to get work done.” One key to being an effective boss is delegation and the key to effective delegation is having systems through which people can produce consistently outstanding results. More on systems in my next ProfitTips column. I struggled with delegation for a long time. I’d consistently be disappointed with the results and usually concluded that if I wanted something done right I’d have to do it myself. It is easy to paint other people as incompetent and yourself as a heroic martyr. But doing everything yourself is not the answer. For one thing, it’s risky. What if something happens to you? For another, it is very limiting. There are only 24 hours in a day and you can only do some much. Ultimately, I realized it wasn’t my employees who were incompetent. To delegate effectively the boss needs to clearly define the desired result and make sure that employees have the resources they need to produce those results. Those resources include training, tools, equipment and materials and, most importantly, a proven system for producing results. Employees also need to know how and to whom they will be held accountable. There’s more. I often hear owners say that they wish they could find employees who care as much about the ranch as they do. I’ve met plenty of employees I could describe that way and most have something in common, a boss who takes the time to explain why the job they are doing is important. That doesn’t mean that every time you send your employee out to fix a fence that you need to spend a half hour explaining why it’s important that animals don’t get out. But employees should know the mission of the business and understand how their job supports that mission. Fixing the fence isn’t about resetting a couple of posts and splicing some wires. It’s about supporting the mission. I still struggle with delegation. I’d rather just tell an employee to “read my mind” and know that good things would happen. I’ve found that every time I’ve been disappointed with the results after delegating something, it’s almost always because I didn’t adequately define the result I wanted or didn’t provide or make people aware of the resources they needed. Make sure next time you point to the problem you see the three fingers pointing back at you. BTW…ever think about what BOSS spelled backward is? That’s right, SSOB. The first S stands for “Sorry.”
