Continued from page 1... Build a better budget. If there's one New Year's resolution that will help you the most in the long run, it's making a vow to save more money. Before you head back to the office, outline a budget that works for you — and make a plan for how you'll stick to it. Apps like Mint and You Need a Budget (YNAB) can help you do this as painlessly as possible. Cook one new thing each week. Everyone wants to eat healthier in the new year, but you should also try to eat more diverse foods. After all, variety is the spice of life. This year, choose an easy dinner recipe you've never tried before at least once a week. (Pick up a copy of the Good Housekeeping Cookbook for over 1,200 tripletested recipes!) Read more books. January is the perfect time of year to snuggle up with a new book. Keep yourself accountable to this New Year's resolution by opening a Goodreads account and reviewing each book you read. By next year, you'll have a clear snapshot of how well you accomplished this goal. Drink less alcohol. You already know you don't need to drink to have fun — and so why not make this year the one you cut back and join the sober curious movement? Doing so could improve your mood, sleep, skin, and immune system. Plus, it'll also help you save money. Eat veggies regularly. Whether you're slimming down or just staying healthy, vegetables are your friends, says Mehmet Oz, M.D. One woman who appeared on his show — Tiffany, who lost 31 pounds — says, "I sauté onions, peppers, mushrooms, corn — whatever I have in the freezer — and toss that on a bed of baby arugula and spinach." Sounds delicious. Become a plant owner. Swing by the garden center after brunch this weekend. Just the presence of indoor plants can lower human stress levels, research shows, and one study found that actively caring for plants calmed the autonomic nervous system and lowered blood pressure. And when people work near plants, they report greater concentration, satisfaction, and perceived air quality. Decorate with family history. In happy and long-lived cultures, people often display items from their families' pasts, says The Blue Zones of Happiness author Dan Buettner. "They remember and honor where they come from," he says. "We find that in happier cultures around the world, folks feel like part of a continuum." So hang your grandparents' wedding portrait, or put meaningful memorabilia on shelves.

USDA Seeks Applications for Grants to Help Agricultural Producers & Rural Small Businesses Develop New Products The deadline to apply is March 10, 2020. The USDA Rural Development is accepting applications for grants to help farmers, ranchers, and producer-based businesses develop new products and expanding marketing opportunities. Rural Development is making approximately $37 million in grants available nationwide under the Value Added Producer Grant (VAPG) Program. The grants can be used to develop new products from raw agricultural products, to develop additional uses for already developed product lines, or to market valueadded agricultural products. Independent producers, agricultural operators, farmer or rancher cooperatives, and majority-controlled producer-based business ventures are eligible to apply. Priority will be given to veterans, socially-disadvantaged groups, beginning farmers and ranchers, operators of small- and medium-sized family farms and ranches, and farmer and rancher cooperatives. Electronic applications must be submitted to grants.gov by 10:00 pm MST on March 5, 2020. Paper applications must be submitted by 4:30 pm MST on March 10, 2020. In Montana, applications should be submitted to your local USDA Rural Development office. We strongly encourage you to contact a local Business and Cooperative Program Specialist prior to beginning work on your application for more details about the requirements and process. Ranching For Profit Blog - Dave Pratt Healthy Land, Happy Families and Profitable Businesses www.ranchingforprofit.com

You Can’t Retire From Ranching How is the next generation ever supposed to step up if the current generation can’t step down or at least step aside? The short answer is they can’t. It’s one reason managerial authority on many ranches skips a generation. More calamitous, it’s a major reason why young people don’t stay in ranching and multi-generational ranches are disappearing. If you want be happy in your later life, be financially secure and keep your ranch in the family, there are three pieces to the retirement puzzle you need to put in place.

What will you retire to? For most ranchers the boundary between work life and family life is somewhere between blurry and non-existent. As a result, what you do becomes who you are. When what you do is who you are, who are you when you stop doing? That’s an important question, and it is one reason why retiring from ranching is so difficult. RMC founder, Stan Parsons, once told me, “You can’t retire from ranching.” Then he added, “You can’t retire from anything. You need to retire to something.” After being active all your life, it isn’t a reasonable expectation to work to the day you retire and suddenly do nothing. You don’t find that purpose after you retire. It should be developed much earlier so that rather than stepping down from your role on the ranch, you are stepping into a something that keeps you intellectually, emotionally and spiritually engaged. What role will you have in the business? It isn’t realistic to expect the current generation to completely sever ties with something they’ve devoted their life to. And it would be an unhealthy blow for the incoming generation to lose the accumulated wisdom of their predecessors. The question is what is the appropriate role for the retiring generation? The outgoing generation has experience that can be invaluable to the next generation. The tuition for the school of hard knocks is high, and while people need to make some mistakes, it would be nice if they didn’t have to repeat every single one the preceding generation made. If it were me, I’d want the outgoing generation to support me as an advisor. If I’m stepping aside for a new generation of management, I hope I’d share with them my insights but realize that they must make the decisions they think are in the best interest of the business. I hope I’d be able to honor that and at the end of the day, ride for the brand. Whatever the role, I suggest you make it flexible and meaningful. The outgoing generation has paid their dues and deserves to be able to get away when they want. It should also be something that makes a real contribution (assuming they still want to contribute). How much money will you need? A lot of ranchers plow every penny they ever make back into the ranch. That makes them dependent on the ranch and who ever is running it for their income in retirement. We should be plowing some of our profit into off-ranch retirement investments that will provide income when we step back from operations. Not making enough of a profit to invest off-ranch? Enjoying Everyday Life Joyce Meyer

Discovering What’s “Right” About You Psalm 23 is a familiar passage of Scripture for many people that brings comfort in times of loss or hardship. But there’s so much more that God has for us in this Psalm than we will understand simply by reading it when we’re struggling with fear or grief. In the Amplified Bible, Classic Edition, Psalm 23:3 says, “…He leads me in the paths of righteousness [uprightness and right standing with Him— not for my earning it, but] for His name’s sake.” This promise from God is a key to living with real peace and joy and becoming everything you were created to be. Getting Free of Guilt and Shame The devil wants us to feel that something is wrong with us, that everything we do is wrong, and we’re not what we should be. And so many people spend their life feeling bad about themselves, guilty or ashamed…like something is wrong with them. I know what this is like. Because of the abuse I went through during my childhood, I spent many years with this message playing over and over in my head, “What’s wrong with me?!” I know many people have had similar experiences and can relate to what I’m talking about. But the truth can set us free! And the truth is through a personal relationship with Jesus, believing He is the Son of God and accepting Him as Lord and Savior of your life, you can be free of guilt, shame and condemnation, and have confidence that you are right with Him. (See Romans 8:1.) God’s View of You in Christ As born-again Christians, 2 Corinthians 5:21 says we “become the righteousness of God” (NIV). This means that, in Christ, we have the righteousness of God in our spirit, and we have right standing with God. It’s easy to wonder, “How can I be the righteousness of God if I’m not doing everything right? I still make mistakes and don’t feel like I’m right in His eyes.” The answer to this question is the difference between religion and having a relationship with God. When I talk about religion, I’m talking about just following rules and regulations that have no life or power of God in them. Practicing a religion often means keeping laws or rules that you think will please God. But we see in Psalm 23:3 that God leads us in paths of righteousness not because we earn it based on what we do but “for His name’s sake.” Jesus gave His life for us so we could have an intimate, personal relationship with God through Him. When we put our faith in Christ, believing that His sacrifice on the cross—the shedding of His blood—provides total forgiveness of our sin, we come into relationship with God because of what HE has done for us. We are saved by grace through faith in Christ, not by any works we do (Ephesians 2:8-9). As we get a revelation of what it really means to “become the righteousness of God,” we discover who we are in Christ and we can live the life God created us to live through faith in Him. Because what we believe about ourselves determines whether or not we will live by faith in God, trusting His love for us and His faithfulness to us. Walking Out God’s Righteousness in You I’ve heard people say, “If you believe you are right with God regardless of what you do, won’t that just give you license to sin?” My response to that is once you know who you are in Christ and the beauty of what He’s done for you, the last thing you want to do is sin. Instead, you want to do what’s right because of what He’s done for you, not to try to earn His love or favor. Being a believer in Christ is a progressive, continual journey of changing to become more and more like Him in our hearts, minds and behavior. Walking in His paths of righteousness happens as we get closer to God and grow in our love for Him and our trust in Him. It’s a lifelong process, and a good attitude to have is: I’m not where I need to be, but thank God I’m not where I used to be. I’m okay and I’m on my way! I want to encourage you to enjoy your daily walk with God. He is your Good Shepherd who is always with you, and He will faithfully lead you in the paths of righteousness for your life. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For more on this topic, order Joyce’s four-CD series Sit, Stand, Walk, Run. Big Flat Community Holds Scoping Session for Community Center The Turner Legion Hall on Main Street of Turner, Montana was filled to capacity on the evening of Dec. 18, 2019. Patrons of the regional area known as the Big Flat, which includes the towns of Hogeland and Turner, gathered for chili and problem-solving at the annual meeting of the Big Flat Community Grain Bin, Inc. (BFCGB). The non-profit organization, formally established in 2012 to support the Turner School and the Big Flat community, has taken the reins to begin planning and fundraising for a new community center. The current community center, known as the “Old Gym”, is owned by the school district and in need of major renovation. As a result, the school board has resolved to discontinue use of the building. At press time an auction is set for sale of the facility on Dec. 30th. In light of this news, the BFCGB held its annual meeting to incorporate a community listening session to determine the wants and needs of residents. A steering committee was formed, and 2020 will begin the process. In addition to the community center discussion, other agenda items included a report from school superintendent Tony Warren, a report from booster club president, Adam Billmayer, and promotion of the BFCGB’s annual vacation raffle which culminates on New Year’s Eve with 3 trips being drawn. For more information about any activities of the BFCGB, interested parties may contact Tricia Kimmel at (406)379-2512 or Johannas Brown at (406)9451709, or email info@turnermontana.us.

Dear John, Absolutely! Every one of those savings bonds is accruing interest at the appropriate rate for the type of bond it is. The problem is every one of those rates stinks. I hate savings bonds. We’re talking about some very low interest rates. Another reason I don’t like savings bonds is they’re not financial instruments which cause you to be responsible with them. People lose them, they forget about them, and then maybe they turn up in an old lock box somewhere down the road after making a whopping two or three percent. Back in the day, they used to be positioned as patriotic and all that. But who wants to finance the stuff this government does? We’re not supporting World War II anymore, you know? Cash them in, and depending on what Baby Step you’re on, put it toward your emergency fund, your debt snowball, retirement, your mortgage—just be proactive, and do something better with the money! —Dave
