Maharashtra Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Patangrao Kadam said 41 bodies have been recovered so far and eight people rescued from the huge mound of mud. "There are around 300 jawans working day and night to rescue people trapped inside," said Kadam, who added that a meeting has been fixed on Friday to decide on rehabilitation of victims. "We will chalk out plan to rehabilitate survivors. The government will help those in distress in every possible way," he said. Degree or Class I? A festival of Marathi plays MU's new paper pattern for internal examinations comprises 'Fill in the blanks', 'Match the columns' and 'Answer in one sentence' By Yatin Ingle

ith the new marking scheme of Mumbai University (MU), a new paper pattern has also now been introduced by the varsity. According to this pattern, the question papers will contain 'Fill in the blanks', 'Match the columns', 'Answer in one sentence' and multiple choice questions (MCQs). The new paper pattern is likely to inconvenience teachers who will have to form objective questions out of subjective topics. The MU had declared the new

marking scheme of 75:25 in February 2014 with 75 marks reserved for the external examination and 25 marks for internal exams. A professor, who did not wish to be named, said, “We have to cut down the subjective pattern to an objective one. This system is initiated by the university to increase the pass percentage of students. A degree college student will now have to attempt a pattern similar to that of Class I. The MU should understand the level of the degrees and then finalise the paper pattern.” On the other hand, Supriya Karande, senate member, MU, said, “The university is trying to match up with the standards of international universities which carry such questions. We want to bring in new methodologies in teaching and conducting examinations. I also hope that gradually we reach a system where exams are conducted online, which will help speed up the marking process too.” In 2012, the MU had ruled out its 50:50 marking scheme and introduced the 60:40 scheme. Later, it was noticed that colleges had been engaging in malpractices in awarding marks to the students. The MU then introduced the scaling down of the internal marks of a student if they scored low marks in the external exams. Dr Naresh Chandra, Pro Vice Chancellor, MU, said, “The decision has been finalised by the Board of studies and academic council. It will be followed in the current academic year. If the MU comes across problems regarding this pattern, then a decision will be taken over it.”

Thane cops and RPF shirk responsibility Three days after attack on BEST TC in Bhayandar subway, FIR yet to be registered By Suresh Golani
T
hree days after a 52-year-old BEST-Ticket Checker (TC) attached to the Magathane Depot ( Borivali) was brutally attacked and robbed by three unidentified men inside the Bhayandar subway, an FIR is yet to be registered as “confusion” prevails over the jurisdiction between the Thane (rural) police and their railway counterparts. This despite the fact that sub-ways generally come under the jurisdiction of the city police. According to information-Rajendra Chimaji Jadhav (52) – a resident of Bhayandar (west) was walking inside the subway to board a bus from Sai-Bab temple to reach his workplace at Magathane Depot at about 4:45 am on Tuesday when three unidentified men mounted an attack on him and decamped with valuables including Rs.1300 cash, two mobile phones, BEST penalty receipt book and an Eticketing machine. Jadhav approached the Navghar police station of the Thane (rural) po-

lice unit in Vasai. But the RPF too turned him away saying that crime place did not come under their jurisdiction. While most of the officers attached to the Navghar police station remained unavailable for their comments, Additional SP, (Thane-Rural) Sangramsing Nishandar in his response to a telephonic message to this correspondent made it clear that the subway came under the purview of the RPF. On the other hand an on-duty personnel identifying himself as Inglekar who was posted at the RPF unit in Vasai , claimed that subways are supposed to be manned by the city police which is the authority to probe any crime occurred there. “The subway has become a haven for junkies and anti-social elements who are always on the lookout of targets during the early morning hours and late night pedestrian’s, the police should immediately nab the culprits.” demanded social worker, Subash Pandey. The police were yet to register a FIR till reports last came in.

By Shwetha Kannan ccording to recent estimates, there are 218 million children involved in child labour across the globe. Statistics from the Government of India, as reported by the media, put the figure at more than 20 million child labourers in the country. But if one goes by what NGOs working in the field have to say, the number is as high as 60 million and can go up to 100 million if out-of-school children are included as part of the labour force. Chotu, who is seen washing used glasses at the 'chaiwala's tapri'; Chutki, who pleads with you for buy her flowers at the signals; Munna, who serves you soup at the Chinese food stall, are all part of these millions in our country. Are these children meant to be doing what they are doing? No. Are there ways and means to get them out of the hell that they are living in and give them a chance to lead better lives? Yes. Are we doing what it takes to help and protect them? Are we doing enough? The answer to these questions, unfortunately, is “no”. These children are supposed to be going to school, playing with friends, living their childhood just the way we lived ours. But caught in the clutches of child labour, their dreams to live a good life remains just that, a dream. One might say that these children can be rescued and be given an opportunity to lead better lives. But does this really happen? Are these 'rescued' children actually rescued and rehabilitated in the true sense? A report exploring the the aftermath of the raids that began in Mumbai in 2008, where more than 2,000 children were rescued from labour, was released by Child Rights and You (CRY) along with the Committe Action for Relief and Education (CARE) on Thursday. This report, where the lives of these children are chronicled through interviews, surveys and drawings by the children, states that for the rescue has not made much difference to the lives of many of these children. It also says that much more needs to be done by the government, much more than what it claims to be doing, to tackle the issue of child labour in the country. For this study four police zones of Dharavi, Byculla, Chembur and Antop Hill were selected as these were areas where the maximum raids had been conducted. In addition to the information collected from the 85 children (78 boys

and seven girls coming mostly from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan and in the age group of 11 to 13 years), information for analysis was also sought from 77 First Information Reports (FIRs) from 38 police stations. “Between 2008 and 2010, 2,225 children were rescued, out of which we found out that 450 are living in Mumbai. So we decided to take a sample size of 20 per cent of these children which amounted to 85 children,” said Dr Yamini Suvarna, one of the authors of the report from CARE. The report that took almost a year to complete has come out with major findings about the life of these children before they were rescued, during the rescue and after the recsue was done. Before being rescued, none of them were given three meals a day, 60 (70.59 per cent) were given just two meals a day, 27 (31.76 per cent) did not get tea. On a positive note, 78 children (91.76 per cent) had access to drinking water. Seven children, two were into begging, four worked as street vendors and one who in a hotel, said that they did not get water to drink when at work. 70 children (82.35 per cent) earned between Rs 501 and Rs 2,000 per month, 71 children (83.53 per cent) worked 10 hours a day or more and 56 children (65.88 per cent) worked six days a week. None of them had access to education. Only eight children (9.411 per cent) had had health checkups and 42 (49.41 per cent) once received clothes from their employers. Another saddening revelation was that 42 children had been treated badly by the employer out of which one girl and 24 boys reported being subjected to verbal abuse. One girl and 17 boys reported physical abuse and one boy and one girl reported sexual abuse.
Did the rescue actually set them free? The findings give you the answer. From October to December 2013 when the study was being conducted, 50 children aged between 11 to 13 years continued working as child labourers in the top three sectors of work: hotels, leather factories and zari workshops. Thirty-five children were from Uttar Pradesh, 31 from Bihar. Sixty-five children worked full-time, 16 children combined work with education, 16 attended municipal schools (10 in Hindi medium, two in Marathi medium and four in Urdu medium), four children were no longer employed, out of which three neither worked nor attended school, while only one was at home and studying. Fifty-three children, out of the 68 not studying, wanted to study. Shockingly, 10 children who suffered abuse at the hands of either the employer or adult co-workers continue to work with the same person, this includes one of the two children who faced sexual abuse at work. And the areas of work are hotels and other eateries, leather factories, gold factories, pani-puriwallas, metal work and street vending.
So what do these findings tell us? “It is of great concern that even while children are being rescued from labour they feel neglected, unprotected and their rights are not ensured. This calls for attention from the government at all levels. There is an immediate need for streamlining the protection of children during the rescue process. We need to have a robust mechanism where each child is assured rehabilitaion in the real sense of the word,” said Kumar Nilendu, general manager
(West), development support, CRY. According to Vikas Sawant, co-author of the report from CARE, one has to make sure that the existing rules and standard operating procedures (SOPs) with regards to rescue and rehabilitation are adhered to. “What is the point in demanding new laws when there is no implementation of the existing laws in the first place? In our study we observed that the SOPs that have been prescribed by the government for rescue operations are not being adhered to. After the rescue the children were not provided with food and water. In addition, they were taken to the police station in a police vehicle, FIRs of several children were clubbed into one FIR, they were kept waiting for hours in the same room as their employers or other accused. These are few of the violations of the SOPs, that we came across. Steps to stop all this from happening must be taken,” said Sawant. The report has some suggestions and recommendations to deal with the issue in hand that touch upon subjects like process of rescue, strengthening prosecution, streamlining restoration process, adherence of SOPs, to state a few. “We have started with Mumbai as a step towards getting to know the reality of the lives of children rescued from labour. We plan to scale it up to the state level and later to a national level. We will be submitting the findings of this report to the government and all the concerned authorities to bring about changes in policy. We will try our best to bring in a change at all possible levels,” said Kreeanne Rabadi, regional director (West), CRY. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

PASSPORT HELPLINE No: 771580000
By Neel Shah
O
n Thursday, Mumbai Commissioner of Police (CP) Maria launched a software in which the time of passport verification has been reduced from the earlier 30 to 40 days to a mere 10 days. Applicants will now receive SMS updates on their application status during its journey between the Regional Passport Office (RPO), the police station and the SB-2. Interestingly, this move of the police has made Mumbai the first metro in the country to have this reduced time of 10 days for the tedious passport verification process. The fool-proof plan will be achieved through an online computerised process between the 92 police stations, SB-2 and the RPO, where the physical movement of applications has been shelved.
While announcing the new system, Maria said, “The earlier procedure involved the application first being sent to the SB-2 office after one applies in the Passport Seva Kendra. Then it was sent to the police station where the person was summoned for a brief interview to confirm his identity and criminal antecedents, and then back to the SB-2 from where it was transferred to the RPO.” Adding further, Maria said, “Now the application will be directly sent to the police station from where it will go back to the RPO through SB-2 office. The passport verification had earned the police department a bad name due to the inordinate delay and allegations of corruption.” During the procedure, the applicant will receive SMS updates at various stages. When the application has reached the police station,
A helpline has also been set up to check the application status and report grievances. Complaints can also be sent to srpipassportssb2-mumbai@nic.in.
the SMS will ask the applicant to be there within three days, between 9 am to 11 am and 6 pm to 8 pm, except on Mondays. Second, the application will be emailed to the SB-2 from where it will be forwarded to the RPO, where the applicant will receive another SMS informing him of the same. In this regard, all police stations of the city have been given dedicated user IDs and passwords. Regional passport officer Swati Kulkarni said their office receives 1,700 applications from Mumbai everyday and the online system will ensure transparency. neel.shah@afternoondc.in
Metro introduces trip-based passes

M
umbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL) yesterday announced the introduction of its unique tripbased passes from August 1. The two trip-based passes, for 45 and 60 trips one way, have been designed keeping in mind the convenience of daily commuters using the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Metro to go to their workplaces, schools, colleges and other academic institutes. Currently about 2.25 lakh commuters are using smart cards, while the ridership on the route has crossed the one crore mark in June. According to a statement released by the MMOPL, a commuter can avail a 45-trip pass (one way) for just Rs 600, while the 60-trip pass (one way) will
cost Rs 800. The trip-based pass will significantly reduce the trip-based expenditure of the daily Metro commuters. As per the existing discounted fare structure valid till September 30, a commuter commuting between Versova and Ghatkopar pays Rs 20 for a single journey token and Rs 15 if he is a smart card user. If the commuter avails a trip-based pass, then he will only be paying Rs 13.33. To avail of this benefit the

T
he old Mumbai-Nashik highway near Balkumb, at Kapurbawdi, which runs parallel to the recently opened Kapurbawdi flyover, is loaded with large and deep potholes causing commuters to sit through a painfully bumpy ride as they ride over it. Commuters complain that when they took this issue the Thane Municipal Corporation, the officials there denied the responsibility of repairing this road. “I am a daily commuter of this road. The potholes are so
deep that it could cause problem to riders and their vehicles. The vehicles tilt so badly that we feel like sailing in the boat. When we took this issue to the TMC, they answered saying it is not our responsibility as the flyover beside the road is constructed by the MSRDC. So this road which is parallel to the same should also be built by them. Every year we face this problem and receive the same reply from the TMC officials,” Shyam Giri, a daily commuter of old Mumbai-Nashik highway, told the ADC. While the MSRDC says
commuter will have to procure the passes latest by August 31 so as to use it till September 30. The trip-based passes will exist even after that but the trip-based fare may be revised. The trip-based passes can be purchased at the ticket or customer care counters located at each station. The MMOPL has made arrangements for the existing smart card holders to convert their current smart cards to tripbased passes. they don't have any rights or authority to repair this road, though it is parallel to the Kapurbawdi flyover, added Shyam Giri. “The old Mumbai-Nashik highway road comes under the MSRDC as the Kapurbawdi flyover is parallel to the same. So the responsibility of repairing work is of MSRDC not TMC,” said, Sandeep Malvi, the public relations officer of the TMC. When we contacted the senior officer of MSRDC, he said, “We will soon arrange a team to take care of the potholes of the old MumbaiNashik highway near Kapurwadi, as the convenience of the people is important to us."

embers of the Cambata Aviation Employees Union on Thursday organised a morcha to LIC office at Santacruz West, in protest against the alleged failure of LIC officials to communicate to them about alleged default by the company in depositing the amount collected under the LIC’s Salary Saving Scheme. Under the scheme, employees allow their employer to deduct LIC premium amounts directly from their salaries which the employer is then supposed to remit to LIC. A delegation of employees, led by Shiv Sena leader and former MLA, Shrikant Sarmalkar, called on LIC's Senior Divisional Manager R K Verma and complained that the company was deducting nearly Rs.27 lakh from salaries of over 2,500 employees every month under the scheme, but had not deposited the nearly Rs.1.90 crore accumulated in the last few months. Apart from the company, LIC officials were also not giving the details of payments / non-payments to policy holders, which was tanta-

He also told the delegation that he can also provide electronic clearance service for paying premium if all the employees agreed. day-long rainy picnic turned tragic for a group of Virar-based youngsters when waves caused by torrential rain swept one of them away at the waterfall in Tungareshwar near Vasai on Wednesday afternoon.
Petrol cheaper, diesel dearer
According to the police, the deceased, identified as Nishant Velvalkar (11), along with his elder brother and friends from their locality in Manvelpada, Virar (E), had visited the Tungareshwar Hills near Vasai for a rainy picnic. After paying a visit to the ashram on the hillock, the youngsters decided to have a bath in the stream of Tungareshwar which also has a waterfall. Nishant was apparently frolicking in the
stream when a torrential wave caused by the heavy rain swept him deep into the waters. Nishant’s body has been recovered and sent for a post-mortem analysis, the police said. A case of accidental death has been registered in this context at the Valiv police station. Despite repeated warnings, revellers continue venturing into waterfalls during rain, completely unmindful of the consequences, officials said.
P
etrol price in Mumbai was cut by Rs 1.15 per litre, the second reduction in threeand-half-months, while diesel rates were hiked by 62 paise a litre. The revisions is effective from Thursday midnight, Indian Oil Corporation, the nation's largest oil firm, announced on Wednesday. Petrol in Mumbai will cost Rs.80.60 per litre from today as against Rs.81.75 a litre currently. Similarly, diesel will be priced at Rs.66.63 per litre from Friday as compared to Rs.66.01 currently. Petrol price was reduced following drop in international oil rates and rupee depreciation against US dollar, making imports cheaper, a PTI report said.

Meanwhile, the Sessions court on Thursday extended the Paraksar an interim relief from arrest till August 5. the villagers as they slept. The entire village was wiped out from the map within seconds. If rescue operations have been the challenge for the administration, a bigger problem confronts the relatives and others. In some cases, entire families have perished leaving no one behind to perform the last rites. In others, heavy rains have prevented many of those whose relatives lost their lives in the landslide from carrying out last rites. "It's a big challenge before me now. I have lost 11 members of my family, including my parents, wife, brothers and uncles. I survived because I had gone to Pune. Now I don't even know how I will conduct the last rites," said Namdeo Jandhare. The NDRF team says with every passing hour, chances of survival for those trapped under the debris is slim. "We are trying our best, but with the time passing away, there are hardly any chances of anyone still being alive under the debris," said Alok Avasthy, NDRF commandant. gainst the backdrop of the Pune landslide, a Right to Information (RTI) query by activist Anil Galgali has revealed that across the 25 assembly constituencies in Mumbai city, western and eastern suburbs, over 22,483 hutments in 327 hilly areas are dangerously located and need to be shifted urgently. The landslide that took place on Wednesday devastated Malin village near Pune. With seven more bodies being extricated on Thursday from the debris of
the landslide, the death toll has gone up to 30. As many as 168 people are still feared trapped under the mountain of mud-and-rock debris. RTI activist Galgali has got hold of the cold statistics of people dead in landslides. If only these hutments had been shifted, as was recommended after the Mumbai Slum Improvement Board carried out a survey on April 17, 2010, the casualties could have been reduced. On September 19, 2011, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan had ordered to prepare an action plan and demanded a report on how much land will be

A survey states that across the 25 assembly constituencies in the City, Western and Eastern suburbs, over 22,483 hutments in 327 hilly areas are dangerously located and need to be shifted urgently. Of them, 49 are in Mumbai city with 3,986 hutments. Of these, 2,303 hutments have already been shifted and 1,683 will be safeguarded by a retaining wall. In Mumbai suburb, 278 spots are dangerous with a total of 18,497 hutments. Of these, 8,698 were

Even 34 months after this, the Urban Development (UD) department has till not implemented a single agenda nor prepared any Action Taking Plan (ATP) as ordered by the Chief Minister. People living in dangerous locations must be shifted to safer locations: CM Cutting of trees and construction activities are main cause for such debacles, says he, adding that a policy will be framed to curb such acts By A Special Correspondent
C
hief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, after taking stock of the situation briefed the cabinet yesterday and made it clear that people living in dangerous locations across the state, which are prone to landslides, would have to be shifted elsewhere to prevent such incidents. At a cabinet meeting, Chavan, informed about the incident after his visit to the accident site in Pune district, said that 44 houses in Malin village of Ambegaon taluka were affected. “In order to ensure that such an incident does not occur again, people living in dangerous locations need to be shifted elsewhere and rehabilitated. About 300 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel are engaged in rescue operations. However, it is difficult to take equipment to the accident spot because of narrow roads and mud. People have been crowding the place, hampering rescue operations,” Chavan told the cabinet, according to the CMO official.
Appealing to the public not to crowd the place, he said that two more days would be required to clear the debris. “There are several villages near the hills along the Sahaydri mountain ranges. There are incidents of landslide due to cutting of trees as well as construction activities on the hills. Mountains have been flattened for agriculture,” he said. Since environmental experts have informed that the Malin landslide occurred due to such activities, if necessary, a policy will be prepared to tackle such activities, he pointed out.

tragedy
A
S many as 160 people are still tempted in the debris, 41 people have been crushed to death in the major landslide tragedy in Pune. Recovery operations have been going on ceaselessly – with Central assistance coming in a big way. As many as 44 homes are said to be under the debris. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh rushed to Pune, studied the situation and discussed relief measures with local authorities. Heavy rains, it is reported, is making rescue work difficult. The inevitable blame-game has started. The local authorities are being charged with negligence. They should have seen the landslide coming. People who were living in the area could not have visualised it. Experts could have, however, seen the tragedy coming and could have taken measures to prevent it. As expected, already paltry money has been given as compensation. The Home Minister has announced a compensation of a small sum of money. The state government also can be expected to provide a pittance as compensation. The number of people for whom compensation has to be given is small: The number of survivors is small. What can be done now is to make more efforts to prevent landslide tragedies. There are quite a few waiting to happen. What has become clear is that it is one of the tragedies which could have been prevented. People settled below the raised portion of land became helpless victims. Such tragedies can be expected to continue to happen, thanks to a casual approach of the authorities.

VENTS are taking place one after another in rapid succession which makes it difficult to keep pace with them. Just in one week we had Indian nurses evacuated from Iraq, obviously after much effort. Then came the Railway Budget to be followed the next day with the announcement of the national budget. This column deals with the Railway Budget important as it is. Deccan Herald (July 9) called it a 'mixed bag' considering that there were no "firm indications how the government will raise revenues for many proposed projects". “Union Railway Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda,” said the paper "is banking on the domestic and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and the Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) Mode". The paper said the worrying aspect was "a decline in the railway traffic growth in 201314 and increased expenditure". Acknowledging that the government has not followed the penchant of previous ministers to "make populist announcements, the paper praised certain promised initiatives".
Many challenges The Times of India (July 9) said “Gowda faces many challenges with the railway running the risk of remaining a drag on the economy rather than a force multiplier for it". However it said Gowda "deserves credit for treating passengers with more respect than usual". "Rail travel" it said, "will hopefully become a less daunting experience with an emphasis on cleanliness and related amenities". Also, said the paper, "Gowda's promise to review endless stoppage which increase duration of a journey was long overdue, but, it added, "toying with the idea of a bullet train while other trains crawl, makes no sense". The New Indian Express (July 9) called the budget "a responsible one" "without too many populist flashes and carefully balances the the need for profit with the organisation's social welfare role". It said: "to attract massive investment, it is imperative that the existing work culture of Indian Railways is radically changed". That, said the paper, "calls for restructuring of the present Railway Board". The paper praised Gowda for "limiting announcements of new projects" while focusing "rightly on completing the existing ones". The Hindu (July 9) said Gowda's presentation was full of ideas and policy formulations but lacked concrete proposals or a vision or road map to take the Indian Railways forward. Noting that the budget focused clearly
on passenger amenities, the upgradation of the computerised reservation system should be a welcome step, said the paper, adding that "an open invitation to the corporate sector to invest in PPP projects will not, by itself go very far without concrete proposals for land utilisation etc". DNA (July 9) said the railways which are currently a department of the Government of India "should be separated and organised along the lines of the Oil And Natural Gas Corporation". It added: "once it is in longer part of the Government of India it could in stages be converted into a full-fledged com-
MEDIAWATCH M.V. Kamath pany. It will be freed of its shackles and realise its full value, just as ONGC Ltd. now commands for its share on the bourses". It asked: "Is that too preposterous a dream? But then that could well be Narendra Modi's lasting fame". The Asian Age (July 8) thought that the Railway Budget is "a tame affair". "The only shock" said the paper, "as far as passengers are concerned is Gowda's proposal to link future passenger fare hikes to the rise in fuel prices". That, said the paper, "would neutralise the effects of the rising cost of fuel on the roadways". According to the paper, the budget is "more a vision statement and a measure of Gowda's intent for the railways in the coming months." It said Gowda "should have given a time frame for achieving the amenities and proposals he has made". It argued that where the budget "really fell short is security and safety". Also, said the paper, "the experience of the railways of the PPP model has not been edifying" and, in fact "it has been a failure in the earlier regime". The Telegraph (July 9) said "no government or railway minister has raised the fundamental question: Why should the government be involved in the running of the elaborate and

O pass life’s tests, you will need to develop elasticity of the mind. Tests are not meant to crush you. They come through the natural law of progress, to help you develop your mental powers, and to advance from lower to higher levels of willingness, effort, and creativity. Most people give up and fail, but in order to succeed you must learn to persevere in your effort toward your goal. If you are suffering materially, do not add more injury to yourself by mentally accepting defeat. Even if you have no job, for your own good, you have no right to be depressed. If you sit in your home moaning and sobbing, you are paralyzing your mind with sorrow instead of keeping it busy with the kind of creative thinking which alone can show you a way out of your difficulties.
I can forgive the physically lazy man if his body is weak or if it needs rest, but I cannot so easily forgive the mentally lazy man, for he is too lazy to think. Do you need a job? Instead of sobbing and complaining, you must keep your mind busy with continuous thinking as to how you can secure work for your-

complex railway network? Why should not the railways in the spirit of economic, be open to private capital and initiative?". It is worthy to note, said the paper "that the railways form a separate ministry and is not under the ministry of transport". Added the paper: "This year's railway budget is no different, save for the announcement that the bulk of future railways projects will be financed through Public Private Partnerships. This is a glimmer of change. The railways are a loss-making venture".
Competitive environment The Hindustan Times (July 9) said the railway budget "is a realistic assessment of how the railways need to morph in a competitive environment". It said: "For long Indian railways have suffered from low investment and populist policies to subsidise fares, turning the once mighty system into a slow and congested network that crimps economic growth". Added the paper: "The railways need to build capacity now; think laterally about finance. This appears to be the central message of the Railway Budget". Gowda, said the paper "has very little money to splurge in any case... The railways' operating ratio -- the rupee spent to earn every extra Rs.100 has deteriorated..." Business Line (July 9) felt that the budget may be lacking in ambition in terms of investment plans and projects... yet "it should be commended for signaling a departure from the beaten track of populism". Gowda, said the paper, "should also be given credit for stating that the railways will henceforth focus on completing projects rather than on sanctioning new ones." "It is better" added the paper, "to spend on projects deserving of immediate funding" and warned not to lay too much hope "in attracting investments in the rail sector" because these, and also foreign direct investments will take time to materialise". The Economic Times (July 9) praised Gowda for aiming to make the organisation solvent "and to kick-start stalled investment in the economy". It said that a tariff authority for automatic freight and fare adjustments makes eminent sense, but "unfortunately finds no mention in the railway budget". It took note that Gowda "wants to priorities projects and not to spread resources too thin". That, said the paper "is welcome as are foreign investment, public private partnerships and commercialisation of railway land". that whatever has been done, and is currently posing challenges in your life, can be undone. Every new effort after a failure must be well planned and charged with increasing intensity of attention. Remember, if you make up your mind that you are going to control your circumstances, your circumstances will adjust themselves accordingly. Friendly success tendencies are ready to help you, depending on your unflinching efforts. These are your invisible friends. Rouse your will by repeated judicious efforts, and ultimately you are certain to awaken the success tendencies sleeping in the dark chamber of your subconsciousness. You must believe more in the power of the mind and will. The more you depend on mind and will power, the more they will do for you. Wrestlers have made us proud APROPOS 'Golden day for grapplers' (ADC , Jul 30), it is indeed very heartening to learn that the Indian grapplers are winning gold medals at the Commonwealth games, by virtue of which they are at the fifth slot in the game which has 71 participating nations. However, it is learned with anguish and concern that the payment of the daily allowances of the Indian contingent have not been made even for those who had gone out of the games. It certainly tells us about the poor management from the sports officials and the ministry of sports at large. This kind of inaction jeopardises the daily life of the participants in a foreign country especially in that part of the world wherein every thing is prohibitively expensive. THE Indian contingent in the Commonwealth games is doing extremely well but they are not able to get their daily allowances and it is a pitiable affair even after performing so well in the 20th Commonwealth games with 36 medals in their basket and many more to come. The participating players have not got their dues as daily allowance. A sizable chunk of Indian athletes are yet to get their full quota of daily allowance a week into the Glasgow Commonwealth games. Our hearts go out to all those sleeping villagers of Malin village who never saw the light of the day and were buried alive by the mud sliding from the slopes nearby. The death toll may go up as the debris are being removed. The only precaution that can be taken in such cases is to keep away from the hillslopes because when the lower part of a whole hill tears asunder from its moorings and comes down crashing, nothing much can be done. This happens in many parts of the world. The mechanical impact of the rain is tremendous and the weathered rock and soil get loosened and moves down in the form of a slide or a flow.

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, AUGUST 1, 2014
Forget sipping delicately on a cocktail and try some shots instead! Whether you want a mild, but tasty shot, or a stiff firebomb with straight-up liquor, Mumbai is quickly becoming a great place to head out for a round of shots with friends. Rhea Dhanbhoora & Dev Goswami tell you more
W
hen you think of shots, we’re sure you think of screaming college kids and alcohol burning uncomfortably, as it makes its way down your throat. But, bars like He Said She Said (one of the few shot-centric bars the city has to offer) are slowly changing that perception, with a range of delicious shots that go down as smooth as silk and will not leave you feeling like you’ve spent the night in a trash can. Such shots still exist of course, but you can modify them to suit your tastes. Take a look at what shots to indulge in, which ones to stay away from and where to get the best shots in the city.
>> Whether you want to try the best shots in the city or learn how to make your own, our article has everything you need to know
Your shot guide Confused about what to order? Here’s a simple list for those who want to start drinking shots, but can’t make head or tail the menu. Jager-bomb: This is one of the most popular shots, made with an energy drink and a little bit of Jagermeister. Kamikaze: Even if you’re a teetotaller, you’ve probably heard of this shot. It’s a crowd pleaser, because of the lime juice and triple sec, but those who dislike vodka should stay far away from it.
3 Wise Men: Whiskey lovers, we’ve got something for you too! With Jim Beam, Jack Daniels and Johnny Walker — this shot is definitely only for those who like their alcohol straight up!
Lemon drop: This one is a film favourite, so we’re sure you’ve at least heard of it. Another vodka based-shot, it’s made with lemon juice and sugar just like the name suggests. Cherry bomb: Prefer tasty shots? Try this one with cherry vodka and an energy drink.
>> The Kamikaze is a popular, vodkabased shot
Jell-o shots: These may be a college favourite but they’re also extremely delicious. They’re made with — you guessed it, Jell-O, vodka and water. continued on pg 14 «
slippery nipple: A current favourite with restaurants, you’ll be drinking Irish cream liqueur with sambuca, if you order this one.
B-52: It sounds like gibberish, but is actually one of the tastiest shots out there. A combination of amaretto, Irish cream and Kahlua, it will leave you licking your lips. soco & lime: If you’ve ever had Southern Comfort, you know what we’re talking about. This one mixes the fruit and whiskey based liqueur with sweetened lime juice, making it a lip-smacking shot.
cream and Irish whiskey, it’s not one for the faint-hearted.
Woo woo: We’re sure that’s what you’ll be saying after you drink this concoction. The vodka-based drink is made with peach schnapps, cranberry juice and lime wedges. Yum! >> Don’t miss out on trying the delicious B-52 shot
irish car bomb: This is fast becoming popular around Mumbai. With Guinness, Irish

disgusting, it also means that you’re essentially swallowing a pickled egg filled with alcohol. Yuck!
CrAzy TOWn
Do you think that all shots are delicious? You couldn’t be more wrong. Take a look at these shots before you start thinking you can order any shot that sounds quirky.
naga chilli vodka: This actually exists in bottled form, so you don’t have to depend on a bartender to make it. It’s officially classified as the world’s hottest vodka and contains several hot peppers, as well as 40% of alcohol. We’re definitely not recommending it.
flatliner: When they said never mix drinks, the Greeks and Mexicans were clearly not paying attention. Sambuca, tequila and hot sauce make up this firecracker shot. Gorilla fart: Yes, this is a drink. Mix Bacardi with an alcohol called Wild Turkey to get this shot, but be very, very careful. hot Mexican hooker: The name is not the only questionable aspect of this drink. It’s a shot that not only contains Cuervo and Tabasco, it also has tuna fish juice! We were gagging too.
shOT rECIPEs Mixing shots on your own is not as hard as it seems. You just have to blend a few ingredients together in the right proportion. If you’d like to have a round of shots (apart from the customary round of tequila, of course) at your next house party, read on as we get bartenders from the city to give us some combinations. l Mix 30ml of vodka with 15ml triple sec and 5ml lime juice for one shot of the classic Kamakazi. Add a lemon wedge on top. This recipe is from Villa 69. l Café Sundance’s B52 is another classic shot that is simple to make — just mix 15ml Kahlua, with 15ml Baileys and 15ml of Cointreau. l We love this shot recipe by mixologist Nischal Gurung from He Said She Said. Called MSD, it sounds delicious and is extremely refreshing. Shake 30ml vodka with 10ml Monin cucumber syrup. Add 5ml of fresh lime juice and serve with a cucumber piece. l Nischal gives us another recipe that is great for those who prefer a slightly sweet shot. Called
new Jersey Turnpike: We’re really glad this drink is not more popular, because it involves squeezing a bar rag into a shot glass. It may be a challenge to drink it, but it’s one challenge that we really wouldn’t mind losing! Eggermeister: Sure, we love Jagermeister shots too. But, add in a pickled egg to the mix and it’s not only
Majama Che, you need to shake 30ml vodka with 10ml strawberry crush and 20ml pineapple juice. Serve with slice of strawberry on the rim. l If you want to be classy and want a unique taste, try this one by Ravi Sharma, owner of Saffron Bay: Mix 22ml of whiskey with 22ml white Sambuca and shake with ice before serving in a shot glass. l This shot, by Devdas Alva, owner of Ankur, goes well with a beer. Mix Irish whiskey and Irish cream in equal proportions in a shot glass. Pour
Cement mixer: If you’ve got a poor gag reflex, avoid this one, because it actually curdles in your mouth! It’s made with Irish cream and lemon juice, which in case you weren’t sure about, should never be mixed with one another!
shOTs In ThE CITy Wondering what restaurants in the city serve the best shots? We give you a list.
he said she said: Considering that He Said She Said is the only shot bar in Mumbai, of course it was going to be a part of this list. But, the real reason that we are recommending the restaurant is because the menu includes a large variety of flavours, making it our favourite. You just have to visit them. Where Remi BizCourt, Vera Desai Road, Off Link Road, Andheri (w) Our favourite shot Django, for `199
Motor oil: Why would you want to drink motor oil? The disgusting combination of all sorts of flavours such as peach and coconut, along with several types of alcohol, makes this a terrible concoction.
Irish beer in pint glasses, dunk the shot in the beer and drink everything in one go. l This one by Omesh Bhatt, owner of Fenny G & Friends, is for the whiskey lovers. Mix Johnny Walker, Black Label, Jack Daniels and Jeam Beam in equal quantities to get a strong, fullflavoured shot. l A flaming shot makes for great visual presentation and can liven up your party if you know what to do. A flaming shot is made of two parts — one is the base, which is the drink that you actually consume, and the second is a highproof alcohol which is needed to light the drink on fire. You can try several combinations for the base — gin, pomegranate juice with a fizzy drink or Kahlua with Irish cream are some popular ones. Once you pour the base in the shot glass, slowly pour a high-proof alcohol (75-80% proof ones such as tequila will work well). Make sure that it doesn’t mix into the drink and forms a layer on top of the base instead. Now, wipe away any alcohol that might have fallen out on the table. Next, use a long lighter, set the drink on fire and extinguish the flame before drinking the shot.
Copa: Copa has made a name for itself with its innovative drinks. Their Jell-O shots are very popular and the other shots on their menu are unique and worth trying too. Where Anna Building, 13th Road, Juhu Our favourite shot Jell-O Shot, for `200 The Little Door: We love The Little Door and their quirky menu. While they are known more for their delicious Mediterranean fare, they also have a great range of shots. So, the next time you are craving shots, TLD is where you should head. Where Plot B 31, Off Link Road, Andheri (w) Our favourite shot A-52, for `497 Irish house: Another pub known for its fantastic cocktails, the Irish House might not have the most unique shots, but you can be assured of great taste and amazing visual presentation. They don’t have a varied range of shots, but there are a few that are worth trying. Where Irish House outlets Our favourite shot Irish Car Bomb, for `420

« stoRe Review: so spa & sukho thai
So pluSh! T
With high ceilings, ample space, luxurious interiors, subtly scented French and Indian spa products and quiet personal niches, Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you why So Spa is a great indulgence, despite its price under `2,000 range, but if you look at the menu, you’ll know why we think you should go prepared with at least `3,500 in your wallet.
he one thing that Bandra Kurla Complex has going for it, is space. Smooth, wide roads lead up to an equally well spaced out Sofitel hotel, which is fast becoming one of my favourite haunts — whether it’s for an indulgent meal, a quick midnight coffee or, as I discovered most recently, an after-work spa treatment. Travelling from the cramped, rainruined suburbs and sauntering into the wide, spacious spa, with high ceilings and marbled floors is relaxing in itself. Encased in stimulating silence, on its very own floor in the hotel, the spa is sprawled over 6,000 square feet, but has only six treatment rooms, so you can see how they have space for a private Jacuzzi in their exclusive couple’s area. After a delicious cranberry drink, while walking from reception to room, I stopped several times, just to gaze at what they call the Golden Drops of Luxury, which are massive gold blobs floating over a water fountain.
geTTing Personal
WhaT’s neW So Spa is not new, but there are a range of new treatments, men’s specials and my favourite change of them all — new timings. The spa is now open 24/7. Yes, you read that right. All you workaholics whining about tired feet and aching bones, now have somewhere to escape to, no matter what time it is. In a city that burns itself out of midnight oil and sees more incidents, accidents and traffic on a daily basis than it should, anything that’s open 24 hours a day is a godsend — and places like this are unfortunately, few and far between. The spa has also introduced a special treatment designed to make travellers feel more comfortable. Called Traveler’s Bliss, it claims to overcome the sluggishness and fatigue that is commonly associated with jet lag. If my treatment hadn’t been good enough, you would have heard about it by now. With the heady scent of citrus lemon leaf oil mixed with the more down-to-earth camphor and sunflower seed oil, my relaxing crème de massage peridot was perfect. With my preferences for dim lighting and spa special music all set, I was led to a room fit for a princess, with an attached bathroom, a closet and nook to do your makeup and brush your hair after your treatment is done, complete with a jewellery box and a plush white stool placed in front of the mirror. My session lacked the traditional pre-treatment foot soak, but started with a warm towel pressed delicately on my feet instead. With slow, but steady pressure, I felt the stress, tiredness and muscle ache slowly leaving my body, as promised. Absolutely nothing was amiss with the treatment, but I felt at certain points as though a little more attention could have been paid to my neck and shoulder area (whatever time was devoted to it was a dream and left me aching for more) and my arms and hands felt disappointingly devoid of attention. If the rest of the treatment hadn’t been so good, this would not have mattered.

Sukho Thai has introduced a new treatment called the CEO massage. Dev Goswami visits their Bandra outlet to find out whether it is a unique massage or just another gimmick
W
alking into the soothing atmosphere at Sukho Thai after dealing with torrential rain and unruly drivers on the road, I was very excited to try their new CEO massage. After all, it promised deep relaxation that would not only loosen up sore muscles, but also de-stress your mind and body. The CEO massage is a full-body massage, but since Sukho Thai is a foot-massage chain, almost of half of the massage is focussed on your feet and calves. In fact, the massage takes place in a foot-massage armchair, instead of a traditional spa bed. But, you won’t find me complaining! Their expertise really shows during the first half and apart from just relaxing your feet and calf muscles, the masseuse goes over several important pressure points, pressing them either with her fingers or a small, wooden massage tool. The technique is excellent and you can actually feel a relaxing sensation making its way up your back, instantly relaxing you. The treatment also includes a head and shoulder massage that is so relaxing, that it can put you to sleep. This is followed by a full-body stretch that stretches almost each and every muscle of your body — which to me, is one of the most important aspects of the massage. Even though they didn’t tell me, it was easy for me to
realise that the stretching was aimed at counteracting the effects of sitting in a chair the entire day. The stretching lasts for a good 10 minutes, is thorough and loosens up your body, leaving you feeling rejuvenated and energised. The massage ends with a strong but delicious ginger tea and bowl of fresh fruit — something that is quite necessary, because the massage leaves you feeling hungry. I am really happy with Sukho Thai’s new addition to their menu. The massage delivers on almost all of its promises. However, I don’t see why the massage is predominantly aimed at men and while they won’t stop a woman from getting the massage if she wishes to, it is strange that they are promoting it as a men’s massage. From the technique to the results, there is nothing menspecific about it. The second problem I have with it, is the CEO moniker. What the massage does is counteract the problems that arise from sitting in a chair all day and refreshes and rejuvenates you, leaving you energised enough to go back to work. This would be beneficial to any working professional and not just CEOs — though I’m willing to overlook this, as it’s probably just a way to make the therapy sound more interesting. On the whole, the CEO massage is one of the best treatments I have experienced. It costs

Naturally impressive Mason jars tied with ribbon, pretty tags and a no-frills, seasonal menu made a very good first impression for Sucres des Terres. Rhea Dhanbhoora tells you whether the artisanal ice-cream tastes as good as it looks
W
hen I tell people that I like ice cream and they lead me to ice cream that tastes like artificial essence, gums and preservatives, I’m always extremely disappointed. So, it’s safe to say that I like ice cream that’ is rich and flavourful, tastes more like cream than ice and leaves you feeling guilty for hours, because you couldn’t stop at one scoop. When I saw the pretty packaging and read about the premium, artisan ice creams from Sucres des Terres (Sugars of the Earth), a brand created by husband and wife duo Yohaan Dattoobhai and Kunali ChandariaDattoobhai, I was immediately interested. Then, I saw the prices and I won’t lie — my heart sank a little. It’s not every day that you’re going to be willing to spend an average of `650 on a jar of ice cream, and that’s where scepticism crept in. Why pick a relatively unknown brand, when I could save up for a while and indulge in my favourite Movenpick flavours? A scoop or two was enough to answer the question for me. Sucres des Terres does not have a delivery service just yet, which is extremely inconvenient if you live far from Worli and aren’t privileged enough to employ someone to get it for you, or drive all the way yourself. But, even if it’s just once, I suggest you take whatever sort of transport floats your boat and pay the hefty price (quite literally) to indulge in the premium ice cream, so you can see why I was left so impressed. Digging into the creamy ice cream is not going to satisfy those who like more of a bite than ice cream that slowly melts on your tongue and coats your palette with its heady flavours. This is not the type of ice cream you
>> (From bottom left) If you enjoy salty-sweet treats, then pick the Salted Caramel. The Dark Chocolate & Ginger is for those who can handle spice in their sweets and love dark chocolate eat in a hurry. Pick carefully from the short and sweet menu if you can only have one, because I had trouble picking three. Salted Caramel, Lime Sherbet and Espresso Croquant made my final list, with samplers of the Dark Chocolate & Candied Ginger and Lychee Sherbet flavours. The creamy treats are made with organic milk, natural flavours and Belgian chocolate and a single scoop is enough to reaffirm that their ingredients are indeed, of a good quality. If, like me, a salty-sweet treat is right up your alley, don’t miss out on the caramel ice cream.
Its salty-sweet texture and balanced flavour is pleasantly devoid of cloyingly sweet caramel. The espresso flavour is strictly for coffeelovers and received its fair share of frowns from those who found the caffeine flavour a little too strong. But, if you love coffee and appreciate the crunch of a croquant in your ice cream, this is perfect for you. The lime ice cream was not a crowd pleaser, but its light, airy texture sat well with me. The one common complaint that it received, along with the lychee sherbet, was that it wasn’t
sweet enough. But, for me, the tartness of the lime and fruitiness of the lychee were what made the sorbets winners, even though I much prefer the creamier offerings at Sucres des Terres. I expected to be thrilled with just the caramel and coffee flavours. The dark chocolate and ginger however, deserves a special mention. I love both, dark chocolate and ginger and it’s not an uncommon combination, but Sucres des Terres strikes a brilliant balance, without going overboard with too much chocolate or ginger. But, if you’re not a fan of dark chocolate and can’t handle spice in your sweets, stay far away from this striking amalgamation of flavours. You do have to take the two week warning seriously. I left a small scoop of each flavour in the freezer for a little longer than I should have, just to see if anything would really happen. The lime flavour separated into two questionable layers that I didn’t want to eat and the Salted Caramel ice cream began to form little crystalline structures over the top. The Espresso Croquant, was reduced to a jar of coffee cream. So, read and follow the instructions on the label if you don’t want to be left disappointed — that’s if the ice cream lasts two weeks of course, which I’m not quite sure it would, since it’s so easy to gobble up in one sitting. This is the type of brand that garnered its fair share of loyalists and detractors in my small circle itself, which is a good thing, because it puts it on par with any other brand that people care enough to talk about. Make sure you buy extra if you’re planning to share — it’s not something you’re going to be very generous with once you’ve tasted it. S
ampling desserts is always a delight — they can perk up a slow, boring day and each flavourful bite improves your mood a little. All you need is a cupcake on a gloomy day to brighten things up, or a slice of cheesecake when you’re feeling down in the dumps. So, when we sat down to sample some treats from Guilt Trip’s new menu, we were quite excited. Take a look at how their desserts fared.
Red VelVet PastRy: Red velvet cupcakes, cakes and even pancakes have been done to death. Unfortunately, very few places get the right balance between the tart cream cheese and a sweet cupcake right, and in this case, the icing was the saving grace. It had a good balance of tart and sweet flavours, but the cake itself had been excessively doused in sugar syrup, turning it to mush. It resembled the texture of baby food and we weren’t impressed, to say the least. In fact, the cake is a grave injustice to the otherwise delicious icing. PRice `110 Red VelVet cheesecake: After the not-soappetising red velvet, we weren’t looking forward to the cheesecake. However, it is a marked improvement and holds together well, without the gooey, pulpy texture. However, while the cheesecake filling was nice, we wish they had held back a little on the liberal use of sugar. PRice `120
caRamel baked cheesecake: If not for the name tag that accompanied this cheesecake, we wouldn’t have been able to put a finger on what the flavour was. Although it tasted nice, a slightly more generous helping of caramel would have helped the dessert. As it stands, the dessert tastes just like a regular cheesecake, with a hint of caramel. Having said that, some of our tasting companions actually preferred the lack of caramel, as it stopped the cheesecake from getting toffee-like, so it eventually boils down to your personal preferences. chocolates, this pastry was a hit with us. Dark, gooey and moist, this chocolate pastry is decadent and a few bites is all you need to quell your chocolate craving. We liked that it wasn’t too sweet and didn’t contain several elements in an attempt to make the pastry fancy. The simple dark chocolate concoction hit the nail on the head! PRice `130 chocolate baked cheesecake: We love a good cheesecake, but this dessert didn’t win us over, simply because it was too dry. A well-baked cheesecake is moist and silky, but one that is over-baked is crumbly and pasty. Unfortunately, Guilt Trip’s chocolate baked cheesecake falls under

the latter category. However, texture aside, the flavours of this cheesecake were quite nice, with a good chocolate to cream cheese ratio. We hope that we caught them on an off day, and would like to give them another chance to see if the texture is any better, the second time around. PRice `130 macaRons
The macarons at Guilt Trip are in no way gourmet quality, but they’re some of the better macarons that we have tasted in the city. The flavours are not overdone, with subtle hints of fruit, vanilla and chocolate. The macaron itself is a little denser than we would have liked, but there is enough filling (some macarons end up being almost empty inside!) and make for a quick dessert-in-ahurry when you’re craving for something sweet. PRice `50 a piece (small) molten chocolate cake
We were told to heat the molten chocolate cake, but decided we needed to sample it cold first, just to see the difference. We advise you to heat it! It’s unimpressive when it’s cold but takes on a delicious, warm, gooey chocolate flavour once it has been warmed. PRice `110

FACT FILE Getting There There are daily connecting flights from Mumbai to Chiang Mai on airlines such as Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways, via Bangkok. Travel within the northern Thailand region of Lanna is easy, with several buses, mini vans and car hire companies offering their services at extremely competitive prices.
>> Get up-close and personal with elephants when you visit Chiang Mai
When to Visit The months between October and February are the best time to travel to northern Thailand, when the region experiences a pleasant to chilly climate, with plenty of cultural and artistic events taking place in Chiang Mai. Accommodation Chiang Mai has an excellent selection of hotels to choose from to suit all budgets and tastes. Some of the best value-for-money options are: l Dusit D2 (www.d2hotels.com) l Sibsan Luxury Hotel Rimping (www.sibsanhotel.com) we set off once again for a wild night. But, not the legendary Bangkok kind you’re probably thinking of! The daily night safari at the Chiang Mai Night Safari is another way to meet and greet the other inhabitants of the jungle — literally. Here, visitors are encouraged to feed the rather docile animals, which include deers, zebras, giraffes and kudus, while being whisked along the safari path in an open-sided vehicle. A latenight, post-safari laser, light and sound show is a nice way to round off an evening there.

hink of Thailand, and visions of a bustling Bangkok, sun-kissed Koh Samui and historical Ayutthaya, among other typically Thai clichés, instantly assault your senses. But, it would truly be unwise to discount another, more tranquil and laid back side of this Land of a Thousand Smiles… While Chiang Mai is regarded as the second largest city in Thailand, its smalltown vibe and relaxed pace of life will make you seriously doubt that claim. Once the capital of the historical Lanna Thai, also known as the Kingdom of One Million Rice Fields — the first independent Thai kingdom within the fabled Golden Triangle — Chiang Mai seems as though it had been crafted by God on his day off, unhurriedly, with painstaking detail. So, give Chiang Mai a chance to wipe the proverbial Thailand slate clean and you will thank yourself, just like I did on my two-day, post-summer trip to the fecund Lanna region of the country.
DAY 1 Not too tired after a quick 80-minute flight from Bangkok on the very classy Bangkok Airways, with its superb, boutique airline service (that includes an airport lounge with free food, drink and internet access for all passengers, irrespective of economy or business class), I landed at the tiny Chiang Mai airport. Ready for a tryst with this citymeets-town that I had heard so much about, I set out, travelling along its paddy fieldlined roads, aided by my very helpful and chatty guide, who was rather fittingly named Chiang! Our first stop was the neat little Bo Sang Handicraft Centre, which is situated a little out of the main city. One of the finest repositories of the ancient art of parasol making, this is the place to get up close and personal with an art form that is not just celebrated in this part of the world, but revered. Here, I not only got to pick up a few gorgeous parasols at affordable prices, but the on-site artists making them were only too happy to give me a short demonstration. Besides parasols, the centre also produces paper fans and other objet d’art to decorate your home with, or simply to take home as

gifts for friends and family. For those with a thing for the gentle giant of the jungle and Thailand’s treasured national animal — the elephant, Chiang Mai is where you can get up close and personal with them. The Chiang-Dao Elephant Training Centre, a mere 30 minutes out of the city, is as far removed from a ‘zoo’ as it can get. This centre is home to 32 elephants, that are each trained by their own mahout. Travellers can not only come in close proximity to the centre’s inhabitants, but can also see them wander through the dense forests, as well as help bathe them in the placid Po river nearby. The day I was there, the elephants seemed intent in putting up a show through a football match in honour of the (then) ongoing FIFA World Cup, as they kicked a rattan ball up and down a jumbo-sized football field into gigantic goals, trumpeting in delight as they did so. Back in Chiang Mai proper, lunch was a relaxed affair at the Plub Pla restaurant. Over copious amounts of food, ranging from northern Thai specialties such as khew whan kai (herbed chicken curry) and yam ta krai (fresh water seafood salad), to neighbouring Myanmar’s national dish, the now ubiquitous noodle and prawn gravy khow suey, I learnt the nuances of the different regional Thai cuisines. While the central and

DAY 2 As a keen anthropology aficionado, I simply couldn’t resist Chiang’s offer to take me to a tribal village on the outskirts of Chiang Mai. The village is close to the other Mekong river countries of Myanmar, Laos and China. The tribe I had the honour of visiting, was the elusive northern-hill tribe called the Akha people. Characterised by their strangely Native American-pattered black embroidered tunics, skirts and metallic ‘ball’ headdress, the Akha people came to Thailand in the early 20th century, mainly due to their persecution in Myanmar, their home country. The Akha are believed to have a very unique and rich oral literature tradition, which they can recite, tracing their history back to several generations. I was also told by a village leader that their annual swing festival is something that shouldn’t be missed. The rest of the afternoon was reserved for some typically touristy pursuits such as visits to Chiang Mai’s major temples including the magnificent Wat Phra That Doi Suthep — a Theravada Buddhist temple, first founded in 1383. With a strong focus on highlighting this region’s role in the former opium drug trade, which was one of the chief sources of income for several countries in South East Asia during the 17th and 18th centuries, the well-appointed Chiang Mai National Museum is chock-a-block with exhibits alluding to the deadly drug and its illresultant addiction. But, addiction of another kind was compelling me to let loose in Chiang Mai’s famed night market — my compulsive malady of ‘foodiction’! From typical street fare such as a spicy and tangy Chiang Mai sausage and yum hed — a fiery mushroom salad, the market abounds with unusual flavours. Others dishes to try here include a northern Thai version of the popular som tam thai (papaya and prawn salad), all served with sticky black rice that is a specialty of the region. And it was here that I found the serendipitous joy that going off the beaten track every now and then brings to the intrepid traveller. Something I urge you to give a shot at the next time you find yourself in Thailand!

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty fell substantially on Thursday (July 31, 2014) a net 70.10 points (0.90%) and closed at the 7721 point level. The market opened down with a gap at the 7784 points level. It then rose by a few points and registered the day’s high at the 7791 points level at 11.05 a.m. The index then dropped sharply into the red and registered the day’s low at the 7713 points level at 3.10 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty witnessed a choppy session and moved in a range of 81 points. Sentiment was bearish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 43 were losers, while just 7 stocks closed in the green. Some buying was witnessed in realty, healthcare and metal stocks, while substantial selling was witnessed in power, banking and consumer durables stocks.
TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 29.34%. This change is substantial and indicates a wide participation by investors.
Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was neutral. Amongst all the traded stocks, 742 were gainers, 798 were losers and 44 remained unchanged. Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has declined and has exited the over-bought zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is below the slow D line (negative if it continues). RSI Indicator: The RSI fell crossed below the 60 level and is now declining (negative if it continues).
MACD Indicator: The MACD is below zero but is declining (negative if it continues). It is above its 9-day Average (positive).

Support (1) = 7691. Support (2) = 7661. Resistance (1) = 7772. Resistance (2) = 7822. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY On Japanese candlestick patterns the index had formed a long black body candle on substantially higher volumes. In fact yesterday’s candle is almost like a Black Marubozu candle. (A Black Marubozu forms when the open equals the high and the close equals the low). Further, the index is below its 5 days moving average and is declining. Moreover, the velocity parameters which were positively trended have now turned neutral. All these indicate a negative bias. However, the index continues to remain above its 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages and all the three averages are rising. This is positive. Investors are advised to hold long positions but with a strict stop loss at the 15-day average at the 7671 point’s level.
Work with strict stop losses on all positions
Moving Averages (Trend Indicators) The index: Is below its 5-day average (at 7776) Negative. Is above its 15-day average (at 7671) Positive. Is above its 25-day average (at 7660) Positive. Optimism Index for overall macroeconomic conditions increases by around 79% on a y-o-y basis, whereas optimism index about financial performance at the company level up by around 23% on a y-o-y basis By A Business reporter
A
pan India survey of Corporate CFOs in which they were asked about their confidence in the overall financial and macroeconomic conditions for Q3 2014 (Jul-Sep of the calendar year 2014), as compared to the same quarter of the previous year reveals CFOs are optimistic with respect to the overall financial health of their respective companies, the business risk environment and the macroeconomic scenario in the country. Revealing interesting facts about CFOs’ perspective on the overall Business Climate, the survey con-
ducted by Dun & Bradstreet says its Composite CFO Optimism Index stands at an all-time high during Q3 2014. The Composite CFO Optimism Index for Q3 2014 surged by 42.8% on a y-o-y basis and 35.4% on a q-o-q basis. Optimism Index for overall macroeconomic conditions increased by around 79% on a y-o-y basis, whereas optimism index about financial performance at the company level increased by around 23% on a y-o-y basis. The overall optimism in the services sector is significantly higher than optimism in Industrial sector. Within the services sector, CFOs are more optimistic regarding overall macro-economic conditions than the financial performance at company level. The Optimism amongst CFOs has increased significantly as 79% (alltime high) of the surveyed CFOs expect the level of financial risks on company’s balance sheet either to decline or remain the same during Q3 2014. Further, a significant number of surveyed CFOs i.e. 46%, which is all-time high, expect risk appetite to go up in Q3 2014. The percentage of surveyed CFOs expecting the operating margin to go up has increased to a 9 quarter high of 59% during Q3 2014. Around

However, the percentage of CFOs opting for these priorities has increased to record an all-time high during Q3 2014. Commenting on the findings of the survey, Arvind Raghav, DirectorRisk Management Solution, Dun & Bradstreet India said “ The various measures announced in the Budget 60% of the surveyed CFOs expect have the potential to kick-start the liquidity position of their company investment cycle. S Kulkarni Developers proposes to open on August 4 a public issue of secured redeemable nonconvertible debentures (NCD) aggregating up to Rs. 100 crore. The company has the option to retain oversubscription of an equal amount taking the total issue size to Rs. 200 crore. The company proposes to use the issue proceeds for the construction of 'DSK Dream City in Pune and 3 other projects under development. The NCD offers four investment options. For options I, II and IV the minimum application size is five NCDs aggregating Rs. 25,000 (face value Rs. 5,000) while for option III the size is one NCD of size Rs. 25,000 (face value Rs. 25,000). The coupon rates for these four
options are 12.5% p.a. for option I, 12.65% for option III and 12.75% for option IV. The effective yields are 13.1% per annum for Option I; 13.43% for Option II; 12.65% for Option III and 13.52% for Option IV. The tenor for these four options are-36 months with quarterly interest payout for option I ; 66 months and payout on maturity of option II; 72 months for option III with annual payout and 84 months with annual payout for option IV. The company is offering an extra 0.25% to women investors, employees, shareholders, senior citizens, servicemen and ex-servicemen. The NCDs have been rated 'CARE BBB+' by CARE for an amount of upto Rs. 200 crore. The NCD are proposed to be listed on the BSE. SBI Capital Markets is the lead manager to the issue.
Bonds and Upper Tier-II bonds at 'AA/Stable’.The ratings continue to factor in the strong support that Andhra Bank will receive from the Government and the bank’s adequate capitalisation. These rating strengths are partially offset by Andhra Bank’s modest asset quality and earnings profile. Further, the bank could witness additional pressure in the near term due to farm loan waivers announced by the state governments of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The RBI’s move to revise the regulations on long-term bonds (with a minimum maturity of seven years) for financing infrastructure projects and for affordable housing - by scheduled commercial banks - followed a similar announcement in the Union Budget on July 10. Apart from statutory liquidity ratio and cash reserve ratio exemptions, advances against these bonds are also exempt from priority-sector lending obligations. Around a fifth of outstanding banking sector credit as on March 31, 2014, was to infrastructure and affordable housing segments. CRISIL estimates at least Rs.3 trillion of loans to these sectors – both current and prospective -- would qualify for funding through infrastructure bonds in the current fiscal. Adds Agrawal, “Given the magnitude of eligible loans for funding, the issuance of these bonds will pick up over time.” CRISIL believes these measures by RBI will also help in deepening and developing the Indian bond market.

What made you accept ‘Singham 2’? Rohit Shetty is one of my favourite directors who has given me hits like ‘Golmaal Returns’ and ‘Golmaal 3’ and he is a director every leading lady wants to work with. I am sure that ‘Singham 2’ will also prove to be a hit because Rohit has a character written specially for me which has comic shades. I play a Marathi ‘mulgi’ Avni, a hairdresser who delivers a lot of cuss words in Marathi lingo and tries to woo the strong and silent Bajirao Singham played by Ajay Devgan.

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, AUGUST 1, 2014 industry as a star. Audiences too like my characters in commercial films.
Don’t you feel that leading ladies don’t have a big role to play in action films? That‘s not the case with ‘Singham Returns’ as I have a prominent role. Why does one equate action films as only hero-oriented in Hindi films? Even in Hollywood there are the ‘James Bond’ films or the ‘Bourne Identity’ franchise where there is very less scope for leading ladies. Yet we find stars like Angelina Jolie doing action-packed roles in male dominated films. It’s not only female oriented films that you can showcase your talent but even in action-packed films. One requires a lot of talent and passion to portray these characters. It’s not a picnic where one can enjoy but it requires a lot of hard work.
E L O R L I V E D E R A AD IN ‘SINGHAM 2’
Did you have to learn Marathi for the role? Yes. I am very good with learning languages. There were a lot of Marathi speaking people on the sets. I learnt some unprintable words as well from them.

What is ‘Singham 2’ all about? In ‘Singham 2’, Bajirao Singham played by Ajay Devgan, fights against the political parties and enemies of the country who hoard black money and send it to their offshore accounts, in places like Switzerland, which takes a toll on the exchequer and the country’s economy. This is a burning issue and it goes to the credit of the police force trying to fight it.
Why is it that you do only commercial films? I prefer them because cinema is basically meant for entertainment and I have worked with top stars like Ajay Devgan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, etc and that is the reason I get a lot of respect in the film

espite a major health-scare crisis involving his wife Medha, Bollywood movie producer and eminent singer Anup Jalota was in a euphoric mood as he celebrated both his birthday and the Eid Mubarak festivities with musical aplomb. Refuting rumours that he is settling in the US for the next 18 months with his ailing wife, as she has to undergo major renal and cardiac surgeries, Anup, speaking to the ADC, said that it was partially true. “Although we, including my son Aryaman, are all leaving for the US by mid-August for my wife’s intensive treatment, I will be returning to India often and briefly to fulfill my domestic commitments out here. In fact I have a string of film productions lined up for release, including ‘Hum Baaja Bajaa Denge’ directed by Chandra (‘Don’) Barot ,” insisted the jovial Jalota. Among the scene-stealers at the late night ‘Jashan-e-Jalota’, besides the affable star M P Shatrughan Sinha, was celebrated filmmaker Shekhar Kapur who made a surprise guest appearance at mid-
night. In the past, the ‘Mr India’ director had acted in as a romantic hero, along with Prem Kishen (now a leading TV serial producer) who coincidentally was also a guest at the same Jalota event. Asked why he was conspicuously missing this year from the list of stalwart performers at the on-going ‘Khazana Ghazal’-fest in the city, Anup quipped, “Not many know that there is a ‘vilaayti khazana’ waiting for me in the US this weekend, where I am performing the the prestigious live concerts in New Jersey and Seattle,” signs off Jalota whose milestone album ‘We Love You Jagjit’, also featuring eight other top singers, dedicating vocal tribute-tracks to the late ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh, is being released shortly. The turnout of celebs at Anup’s event included Bhojpuri superstar Ravi Kishen, Deepa-Ketan Mehta, veteran star-emcees Tabassum and Harish Bhimani, singers Talat Aziz (in Arab head-gear), Richa Sharma, Madhushree, Akruti Kakkar, Jaspinder Narula, Kavita Paudwal, Sumeet Tappoo, Madhuri Pandey, ace violinist Sunita Bhuyan and politician Amar Singh.

any found it difficult to pronounce his name phonetically correct in the film world so they chose to call him the ‘khaki sherwaniwala writer’. It took quite some time for Vrajendra Gaur, to shed the ‘khaki sherwani’ and adopt casual wear of shirt and trousers that is so much a way of life in the film industry. Leaving All India Radio, Lucknow which gave him ample scope to exercise his literary flair, Gaur came to Bombay to write dialogues for ‘Sawan’ which starred valuable names like Motilal and Shanta Apte and plunged himself in the throes of creativity. ‘Sawan‘ was followed by the Bharat Bhushan starrer ‘Aankhen’ (1949) and the Ashok Kumar starrer Sangram (1950). Both the films were hits and Gaur
became feverishly busy writing for more and more films. Gaur was probably the only writer with such rich literary background who made it big in films. Many others came, but they left no sooner then they arrived because they could not adapt to the technique of film writing. His dialogue stemmed from strong characterisation. He often said the reason for herding so many people in a film is to lend colour. And the dialogue writer helps to achieve this by making them speak their language. In the 35 years Vrajendra Gaur was a part of the film industry, he wrote many superior films like Bimal Roy’s ‘Parineeta’, ‘Sangram’, ‘China Town’, ‘Manzil’, ‘Teen
Deviyaan’, ‘Howrah Bridge’, ‘Saraswatichandra’, ‘Sharmilee’, ‘Warrant’, ‘Lal Paththar’, ‘Kati Patang’, ‘Anuraag’, ‘Geet Gaata Chal’, ‘Ankhiyon Ke Jharokon Se’, ‘The Great Gambler’, ‘Dulhan Wohi Jo Piya Man Bhaye’, etc. For the last mentioned film he won the Filmfare awards in the best screenplay and dialogue categories. Gaur had also directed a lone film called ‘Kasturi’ in which filmmaker Shakti Samanta was his assistant. Despite ‘Kasturi’ doing well, Gaur did not direct a film again and returned to his first love, writing. Shakti often said that he owed his career as a filmmaker to Vrajendra Gaur. No wonder then that Gaur wrote most of Shakti’s films.

Still celebrating ‘Kick’
triking gold at the box office with his directorial debut ‘Kick’, producer Sajid Nadiadwala said celebrations have not stopped at his and actor Salman Khan’s residences. As a producer, Sajid with his production house Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment Pvt Ltd had scored a hat-trick with films ‘Highway’, ‘2 States’ and ‘Heropanti’ doing good business. Salman and Jacqueline Fernandez starrer ‘Kick’ has reportedly garnered Rs 147 crore worldwide since its release on July 25. “It has been a very special Eid. NGE started the year with a bang and ‘Kick’ has added to it. It’s been euphoric. Celebrations at Salman and my residences have not stopped,” Sajid Nadiadwala said in a statement here.

ahana Kumra, who plays Amitabh Bachchan’s reel-daughter Taruni in ‘Yudh’, admits that meeting Big B for the first time was “overwhelming” but she did not feel nervous to work with him. Kumra may be new to the medium of television but she comes with a strong theatre background and credits her training on stage for instilling confidence in her. “I must admit that it is a bit overwhelming to meet Mr Bachchan. But I did not feel fidgety or nervous because my two mentors Naseeruddin Shah and Makarand Deshpande taught me to never be afraid. I have lot of confidence in myself and my work,” Kumra told PTI in an interview. The actress, however, says it was easy to work with Bachchan right from day one and the megastar took time to discuss how they should approach their roles. “Anurag (Kashyap) had told him that I would play Taruni but there was no ice-breaker. When the shooting started, my first scene was with Mr Bachchan. I spent whole night working on it. The next day, he sat me down and asked about my understanding of the role. He also came up with a beautiful backstory for my part. He is lovely to work with,” she said. Kumra feels her character in the show is very strong. “Taruni is a lot like her father. She is stubborn. She identifies a lot with him and she is the only one who can stand up to him. It’s a very strong and intense role.”

and adapting movies into plays is one way to do that. The theatre movement needs a shot in the arm and I think this way it can be done,” Bhatt told PTI. The play is being directed by Danish Iqbal. “ ‘Daddy’ is a very special film because Pooja made her debut with this film. The story is still contemporary about a dysfunctional family. It makes us realise that children may be young but their level of maturity is way ahead
of adults at times. And these are the ingredients that makes this ideal for viewers,” he said. Sharing his experience of directing Pooja in the film for the first time, Bhatt said he asked the actress to be part of the film because she fit the role. “Pooja was not part of the film just to foray into Bollywood but because she fit the part perfectly. The play is about this daughter dealing with the alcoholism of her father and how she pulls him out of it. The girl had to be innocent and vulnerable and Pooja was around 16 or 17 and was perfect for it,” he said.
It was actor Imran Zahid who came up to Bhatt with the idea to adapt his films into plays. Zahid says they had initially decided to adapt ‘Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin’. “I came up with the idea and approached Mahesh-sir. We had initially thought of adapting ‘Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin’ but then we zeroed in on ‘Arth’ and ‘Daddy’. It is a big thing for theatre that such films made by National awardwinning director is being adapted on-stage,” he said. Zahid, who played the role of Kulbhushan Kharbanda in the ‘Arth’ play, will reprise the role of Anupam Kher in the stage version of ‘Daddy’. When asked if any significant changes have been made, the actor said, “The dialogues were so perfect as they were.”

ALL SMILES... England captain Alastair Cook smiles up into the sun as he stands, during the presentations after the test match. By Chetan Narula
S
OUTHAMPTON: A listless India crashed to a humiliating 266run defeat against England in the third cricket Test after an abject batting surrender allowed the hosts to level the five-match series 1-1. Needing to bat out the whole day with six wickets in hand in order to save the match, Indian batting crumbled in the first session itself getting bundled out for a meagre 178 in 66.4 overs in a completely lopsided contest at the Ageas Bowl. It was one of the biggest defeats for India in terms of runs on English soil but not their worst, having lost a Test
match by a mammoth 319 runs in Nottingham during the last tour in 2011. For England, the victory meant an end to a winless streak of 10 Test matches starting from the Ashes Down Under. To add insult to the injury, it was part-time off-spinner Moeen Ali, who bamboozled the lower-oder batsmen with his career-best haul of 6 for 67 in 20.4 overs. Pacer Jimmy Anderson provided the first breakthrough in the morning when he had Rohit Sharma (6) nibbling at an away-going delivery to be caught by wicketkeeper Jos Buttler. Mahendra Singh Dhoni (6) couldn't replicate the resilience of the first
innings as he was again a victim of an outswinger, edging to the keeper. While Ajinkya Rahane waged a lone battle at the other end, he could do little as he saw wickets falling like nine pins at the other end. Moeen, then got into the action as he got the ball to turn and jump from the rough as well as bowling the classical offbreaks. He cleaned up Ravindra Jadeja (15) with a delivery that pitched on the rough and came in to hit the off-stump. Bhuvneshwar Kumar got out to a bat-pad catch with a delivery that spun in after pitching. His maiden 'five-for' was completed when a typical off-break cleaned up Mo-

hammed Shami. Rahane duly got his second half-century of the match hitting a brilliant square drive off Chris Woakes with No 11 Pankaj Singh for company. Pankaj was finally cleaned up by Moeen for his sixth scalp as he played inside the line. The two teams will now travel to Manchester for the fourth cricket Test to be played from August 7 at the Old Trafford. India lost their last six wickets for just 66 runs in 24.4 overs on the final day. Moeen took four wickets for 17 runs in the space of 22 balls, having dismissed Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli on the fourth day. Rahane's unbeaten 52 off 121 balls with seven boundaries was the only sav-
ing grace in an otherwise disastrous performance. James Anderson, who will be attending the ICC hearing on his alleged altercation with Ravindra Jadeja, was again adjudged man-ofthe-match for his brilliant match figures of seven for 77 on a track, which wasn't exactly conducive for seam and swing bowling. Stuart Broad (022), Chris Jordan (0-22), Chris Woakes (0-23) might have gone wicketless but they certainly kept the pressure on the Indian batsmen. BRIEF SCORES: England 569/7d & 205/4d bt India 330 & 178 in 66.4 overs [Ajinkya Rahane 52 not out, Moeen Ali 6/67] by 266 runs.
We’ll have to rethink our four-bowler strategy: Dhoni S
OUTHAMPTON: India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni blamed his batsmen for the "soft dismissals" which saw them suffer an embarrassing 266-run defeat in the third cricket Test and said they would need to discuss their fourbowler strategy ahead of the fourth rubber. Asked about the decision to go with four bowlers in the third Test, Dhoni said: "The reason for using four bowlers is the we never used the fifth. We just used him for 10 and 8 overs. With Shikhar and Vijay and Rohit around we thought we could do it. "But it's the bowling we need to improve and hit the top of off stump. We will have to think about the four-bowler strategy. We can say the extra batsman didn't score, but then again the extra bowler didn't pick up wickets. So we have to discuss a lot and decide on the basis of the pitch." Part-time off-spinner Moeen Ali's six-wicket haul saw India bundle out for 178 in the second innings to earn a huge win for England and draw level in the five-test series and Dhoni said his batsmen should have been more positive. "I don't think we played good cricket. We played the fast bowlers well. Moeen (Ali) bowled well, but we also allowed him to bowl well,"
Mahendra Singh Dhoni walks off the pitch after the presentations following the final day of the third test match at The Ageas Bowl in Southampton, England. England's Moeen Ali took six wickets to lead the hosts to a 266-run win over India. said Dhoni after India lost the third Test by a huge 266 runs. "He bowled good lines and one ball will turn, there is some wear on the wicket and we should have been more positive."

Sardar reprimanded for ‘inappropriate physical conduct’
G S B T 12 20 13 45 Yogeshwar Dutt wrestles with Canada's Jevon Balfour during the men's freestyle wrestling 65kg final match at the Scottish Exhibition Conference Centre during the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, on Thursday.
Indian men's hockey captain Sardar Singh was officially reprimanded for inappropriate physical conduct against an opposition player during his side's group match against Australia here. The incident happened on Tuesday when Eddie Ockenden was hit on the face. India lost the match 2-4. After video evidence was played, the appeal jury at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre found that Sardar had no intention to cause the injury to Ockenden but had behaved inappropriately, the organisers said in a statement on 'myGamesInfo 2014' website. The official reprimand has no immediate consequences.
Security fears prevented Rajapaksa from attending CWG
GOLDQUEST CONTINUES G
Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa skipped the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow because of possible security threats from the Tamil diaspora groups based in the UK, a top minister said. "Security concerns are of paramount importance", Keheliya Rambukwella, the Minister of Information and the government spokesman said. Rajapaksa is the current Chair of the 54-nation Commonwealth by virtue of his hosting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) held here in November last year. Pro-Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam (LTTE) Tamil diaspora groups held noisy demonstrations during both the previous visits to Britain by Rajapaksa. In 2010 his address to the Oxford University union was cancelled while Tamil groups also demonstrated when he visited to attend the Queen's diamond jubilee celebrations lunch in 2013.
LASGOW: Olympics bronze medallistYogeshwar Dutt and Babita Kumari breezed their way to goldmedals as wrestlers continued to rule the roost by bagging an impressive two yellow metals for India on the eighth day of the 20th Commonwealth Games. While Yogeshwar (men's 65kg freestyle) and Babita Kumari (women's 55kg) won golds, Geetika Jhakar (women's 63kg) failed to match her compatriots and managed a silver on the wrestling mat for India. Vijender was the more defensive of the two in the opening three minutes. In the second round though, Vijender picked up pace and caught his rival off guard
with a flurry of punches for which Prince had no response. A straight jab and then a right hook from Vijender rattled Prince. The tempo continued in the third round and Vijender won comfortably in the end. On his comfortable win, Vijender said, "It was an open fight but my opponent was also very tough. LASGOW: India paddlers Sharath Kamal and Anthony Amalraj marched into the men's doubles semifinals at the Commonwealth Games. However, Kamal and Shamini Kumaresan experienced a bitter loss against Reed and Kelly Sibley in the mixed doubles quarterfinals. Boxing chiefs to probe headguard scrapping
GLASGOW: The International Boxing Association says it will carry out a detailed study of the impact of scrapping headguards for amateur contests following the conclusion of the Commonwealth Games. It follows a call from Australian boxer Daniel Lewis for the immediate return of the safety gear after a failed medical check ruled him out of his welterweight quarter-final on Wednesday. The 21-year-old suffered a badly cut eye in his win against Nigeria's Kehinde Ademuyiwa on Monday. The wound failed to sufficiently heal in time for him to meet Mandeep Jangra of India, who was given a walkover into the semi-finals. A growing number of cut head injuries have resulted from male boxers stepping into the ring without head protection after AIBA changed their rules last year. AIBA vice-president Dr Abdellah Bessalem from Algeria said his organisation was aware of the concerns and would address them after the Games. competition, you really have to be at your very best and you prepare for that the way you would prepare for the gold medal fight. "I'm going to be up against Connor Coyle (Nigeria) and that will be a very big challenge for me, but I am feeling really great." World No. 3 Devendro outclassed Aqeel Ahmed of Scotland to advance to the medal round. Mandeep, on the other hand, literally walked into the last four after his rival, Daniel Lewis of Australia, was declared unfit to fight due to a cut above his eye.

Ghosal-Sandhu knocked out Indian squash players Saurav Ghosal and Harinder Pal Sandhu suffered a heart-breaking loss in the men's doubles pre-quarterfinals. The seventh seeds from India lost 5-11 11-8 9-11 to eighth seeds Stuart Crawford and Greg Lobban of Scotland to bow out of the competition. Ghosal's only hope of a medal now is in the mixed doubles alongside Dipika Pallikal. "It feels really bad. We are out now and that's not what we would have liked obviously. I think they came out better in the first game than us. In the second game we were better than them and the third was quite neck and neck throughout," said Ghosal.
Golden count goes down but Indian shooters dominate
G
LASGOW: The gold medals were hard to come by this time but Indian shooters were nonetheless mostly on target as they reaped a rich harvest of 17 medals in the Commonwealth Games with the surprising exception of Olympic silver-medallist Vijay Kumar and the seasoned Heena Sidhu. India were hit hard at this edition of Commonwealth Games as the pair events, in which the country had won India had won 18 medals lats time, were dropped here. This time, India managed just
four gold with Vijay and the experienced Heena Sidhu crashing out in the qualification stage and another Olympic medallist Gagan Narang failing to grab a yellow metal. Narang settled for a bronze in men's 50m rifle 3 positions in which he had won gold in both 2006 and 2010 Commonwealth Games. He, however, had a decent show by winning a silver -- his first CWG medal in the 50m rifle prone event. Narang failed to join Michael Gault of England and Jaspal Rana
of India to have won nine gold medals in the Commonwealth Games history. He has won four gold each in the 2006 and 2010 Games. "I am not disappointed all all for not winning a gold here. I won a silver in a new event, the best by an Indian in the Games. I have enough time left with me to break the record," he said. Vijay was the worst performer of all the Indian shooters and he made a quiet exit from the Games after failing to qualify for the final round in men's 25m rapid fire pistol event.
