he Janata Express passengers returned to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) yesterday through a special train which left from Itarsi after the tragic train accident of the Kamayani and the Janata Express which claimed the lives of 30 and injured many. People who were stuck for more than two days in the train were relieved to reach home but they say they have nothing left with them anymore. ADC spoke to passengers and the pantry car owner at the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) who said, they have nothing left with them anymore as everything went with the flood. The pantry car owner of the Janata Express said that he has no hopes and has to start everything fresh, “I have come in the clothes that I wore when I left from there, everything washed out with the water. It was raining heavily. Everything what we had made to prepare for food and all our personal belongings have gone in the flood. When the water entered the compartment we all ran for our lives I saw bogies getting totally submerged in the water.” Ramji lal (40) a passenger of the Janata Express said, “I had finished eating and was planning to sleep and I heard a loud bang. I rushed to see from the door and noticed that some bogies of the train had turned upside down and few fell in the water. I panicked and called the other passengers. their condition was worse, water started entering the compartment and we tried to shut the door. The police officials only reached after two hours, many were stuck and the passengers who

Mumbai University blunder leaves 60,000 students in the lurch Controller of Examinations says that a glitch in the varsity's computer department may have caused the delay in printing of TYBA, TYBCom mark sheets By Vrushali Purandare

tudents seeking admission to various post graduation courses are distressed as Mumbai University has failed to hand over the mark sheets for the TYBA and TYBCom exams. Sixty thousand mark sheets are still awaited. Hence admissions to the MA and Law courses have also been put on hold. Controller of Examinations Dinesh Bhonde said, "The evaluation is complete, but slightly delayed from the computer department, the collation of marks and printing of mark sheets are pending. Maybe there is some error in the department. I will personally monitor and set things right as soon as possible. Also, the delay could be due to the heavy workload. " While Senate member of Shiv Sena Pradeep Sawant said, “We had approached the Controller long ago with this problem regarding delay of
TYBA and TYBCom mark sheets two weeks ago. The exam department kept assuring us that results would be declared by the last week of July. Later, they said that the process was delayed a bit and that results would be out as soon as possible. Students are suffering because of the computer department's blunder." Still 60,000 mark sheets are lying with MU for printing. What MU is doing about this delay is the prime question. University rules state that results must be declared within 45 days after the conclusion of exams. Still results are not out as the mark sheets are not printed. According to a student seeking admission, Imaad (name changed) for the Law course, “It has been two weeks since I have submitted my admission form to Ruparel College of Law; the college authorities have not listed the art faculty list for the Law course. When will the course begin, as the mark sheets are yet to be received by the students. Will we be able to complete the first semester in time? The exams will be held in the first week of October. I think MU Vice Chancellor should focus on this issue too”. Mumbai University Vice Chancellor Dr. Sanjay Deshmukh was unavailable for comment. The Vice Chancellor has failed to keep his word that the mark sheets would be given on time.

The figure which the government is saying is wrong, many dead bodies were carried away by the water. There was only water everywhere, I thank god for being alive and talking to you today.”

Horses and humans share facial expressions
Horses use some surprisingly similar facial expressions to humans and chimps to communicate, according to a new study which identified 17 discrete facial movements in horses. Researchers from the University of Sussex have shown that, like humans, horses use muscles underlying various facial features - including their nostrils, lips and eyes - to alter their facial expressions in a variety of social situations. The findings suggest evolutionary parallels in different species in how the face is used for communication. The study builds on previous research showing that cues from the face are important for horses to communicate, by developing an objective coding system to identify different individual facial expressions on the basis of underlying muscle movement. The Equine Facial Action Coding System (EquiFACS),
as devised by the Sussex team in collaboration with researchers at the University of Portsmouth and Duquesne University, identified 17 "action units" (discrete facial movements) in horses. This compares with 27 in humans, 13 in chimps and 16 in dogs. Horses are predominantly visual animals, with eyesight that's better than domestic cats and dogs, yet their use of facial expressions has been largely overlooked. Despite the differences in face structure between horses and humans, we were able to identify some similar expressions in relation to movements of the lips and eyes. What we'll now be looking at is how these expressions relate to emotional states. The researchers analysed video footage of a wide range of naturally occurring horse behaviours to identify all the different movements it is possible for horses to make with their face.
Local Google now an app away
While on the process of clicking on the browser, typing the URL and scrolling throughout the pages one after another, you will not realize the fact of how tedious and time consuming can be a search on the internet. However, the difference of ease will manifest itself as a luxury when you just have to tap on
an app on your mobile device and results shows out, all in a single window! It is as hitting on the bulls eye at just a single shot, cutting out time, saving it for the real use. Google is great, and no one can deny it. However, the question is how relevant are the most popular engines to search an information which is not uploaded on a website or has a limited exposure in the internet sphere. Searching for local information, facility or a
business has every possibility to be a “doom” if one relies completely on universal search giants such as Google. What users need is specific data about localities that are dependable and has actual physical existence as percept. This is only possible when there is a service that provides information that is localized enough to match with the actual requirement of users. Moving a step further, apps are now
offering the option to connect and contact a business within a locale, providing even the avenue for “The Plan Thereafter” after spotting the info. Hence, using mobile apps it is possible to stay steps ahead of search engines and get things done on chat. In fact, they are emerging as not just information apps, but as the connecting platform between customers towards businesses and services.

He argued that due to the increased urbanisation, industrial growth and increased celebration of festivals like Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav, Eid, Navratri and Diwali it is putting additional pressure on the police force to maintain law and order. Dr Upadhyay stated that the shortage of manpower in the police department leads to cancellation of leave applications and duty hours that last for about 12 hours. The situation is aggravated further for the policemen on the ground with the arrival

Hence the government has decided to give full days pay to policemen who report to duty even though they are on leave. Dr Upadhyay stated that the funds for this purpose has already been provided to the police department.

Cong-NCP get a jolt as seniors join Sena ahead of civic polls By Prashant Hamine
E
ven as senior Congress leader Narayan Rane was busy trashing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government over alleged irregularities yesterday, his staunch supporter and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) party corporator from Ghatla Village, Anil Patankar tendered his resignation of his membership. Patankar who submitted his resignation to the Mayor is more likely to join the Shiv Sena in the near future. Besides this, three Nationalist Congress Party(NCP) corporators and one independent corporator from Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) also joined the Sena in the presence of party president Uddhav Thackeray at his Matoshri residence. Speaking to newspersons here, Sena president hinted at the possibility of a alliance with the BJP for the KDMC civic polls which are due in November later this year. Currently in the 107 member KDMC, the Sena with 31 members is in power. Here the numerical strength of other political parties in the 107 member civic body is as follows – BJP 9, NCP 14, Congress 15, MNS 27 and
Independents 11. Commenting upon the ensuing elections to Kolhapur Municipal Corporation which is also due in November, Uddhav Thackeray clarified that so far he has not received any proposal from the local Sena leadership for any alliance with the BJP. The Kolhapur city Sena unit had publicly voiced its opposition to any poll tie-up with the BJP. Currently in the 77 member KMC, the Congress with 31 members is in power. Here the numerical strength of other political parties in the 77 member civic body is as follows – BJP 3, NCP 25, Sena 4, Others 5 and Independents 9. Meanwhile in the results announced for the Gram Panchayat elections in the state the BJP has improved its performance considerably. It has managed to bag many seats and Gram Panchayats in Jalgaon, Ahmednagar, Chandrapur, Dhule, Akola and Buldhana districts.

where Shaikh had stashed more fake notes worth Rs.1.5 lakh. In all we have recovered Rs.3.5 lakh worth fake notes from him,” said an officer from the property cell. Sources said the origin of the fake currency operation is Bangladesh and people from that country, West Bengal and Mumbai too are recruited for the purpose. The bogus notes are supplied in huge amounts and then delivered to different states of the country. In this case, Shaikh had
brought fake notes of Rs.1000 and Rs.500. He used to contact people and then hand over the fake currency in small parts to them. Shaikh distributed the fake currency for half the cash. Shaikh on this trip had got 300 notes of Rs.500 and 40 notes of Rs.1000. “Shaikh has been arrested under section 498 (c) of the IPC and further involvement of others in the racket is being probed,” said DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni of Mumbai Police.
Shootings cause traffic snarls MBMC charges Rs.15,000 from production houses for 12-hour shooting By Suresh Golani
M
oney spinning action for some can cause a great amount of inconvenience to many. This is the situation prevailing in the twin-city of Mira-Bhayandar which seems to have become a favourite destination for a number of producers to conduct outdoor shoots for television serials and reality shows. But thanks to the utter disregard towards their duty of maintaining road discipline, these shooting locations have become nuisance spots for motorists and pedestrians. A recent shoot taking place in close proximity of a school caused heavy traffic congestion, inviting sharp criticism from locals leading to an abrupt pack-up. In a similar scenario, a TV crew was spotted conducting a shoot near Maxus Mall in Bhayandar (west) on Thursday, this in blatant defiance of norms to regulate the use of public space during peak traffic hours. While either sides of the road were
lined with cars, huge vanity buses and film equipment, the crew which had also installed a dummy traffic signal were seen restricting and allowing traffic movement as per their will. Moreover an enthusiastic schoolboy, who darted across the road to watch the spectacle, was almost hit by a car. “Subject to due compliance of guidelines, we permit film companies to shoot at one particular location, however the onus of keeping a tab on road discipline lies with the traffic department,” said, local ward officer Sanjay Donde. As per a general body resolution, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) charges Rs.15,000 as fees from production houses for a 12-hour shooting stint between7am to 7 pm, this following an official nod from the local police station and traffic department. “I have directed the local police station and the traffic wing to immediately look into the issue,” said, Thane (rural), SP Rajesh Pradhan. However, in the absence of a proper system to monitor the actual on-going activities, some line agents used by production houses to liaison with the authorities have been blatantly throwing caution and rule books to the wind.

In spite of extorting huge amount, the victim’s problems were not solved. The lady, in desperation then approached the fake baba again, only to discover that the accused started ignoring the calls and messages. in our inquiry the husband confessed and admitted that, he was unhappy with his wife because of disease and no kids. Moreover, the husband planned to grab hold of a room which was in his wife's name in Malad. He then contacted his sister-inlaw Amina who stays at Pathanwadi, in Goregaon (East), with her husband and three kids. Amina then provoked Abdul Salam to do away with his wife and the duo hatched a diabolical plan. They purchased PARAD tablets which Amina told to give to the accused's wife. The police recorded a statement of the deceased's brother Sharif Shaikh (32) who said that in front of him the accused Abdul Salam had thrown the tablet container into the gutter. Later, when he asked him about the bottle, Abdul made excuses saying he was suffering from headache due to which he had taken the tablets. “We have registered an FIR under Section 120B, 302, 328 against Abdul Salam and his sister-in-law Amina, they were produced before the court and sent to police custody, SPI Sujata Paitl said.

T
he issue of illegal eateries has always been problematic for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). This time, the opposition at BMC has alleged that Shiv Sena run Shiv Vada Pav is against what the party preaches. In the General Body Meeting held on August 6, Devendra Amberkar, leader of the opposition at BMC brought out the issue of hawkers, some of whom face injustice at the hands of BMC. According to him, the BMC issued the rules for hawkers in 2009, which are still not followed at some places, creating more problems for pedestrians. Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta had initiated that hawkers should be kept off streets for pedestrians' convenience. However, Amberkar says that there are hawkers who have been selling their wares since 30-40 years and are the only breadwinners of the family. Getting their occupation off the
streets is injustice to them, he added. “Until the nohawking zones are properly established, nobody has the right to remove hawkers from the streets, Amberkar's proposal says. He requested in his proposal that no action should be taken until hawking zones are defined. An argument began when the Congress party alleged that it was because of Shiv Vada Pav stalls and open gyms that the pedestrians were facing problems. The party members even brought a wooden model of the vada pav stall, which instigated the Sena members and an argument began. Mayor Snehal Ambekar asked all the members in the General Body Meeting to not make such accusations and keep the model of the vada pav stall outside which was followed by a ruckus. The meeting had to be adjourned without any other issue being discussed or even addressed as almost all the members began yelling, making it impossible for the Mayor to speak.

Ponder awhile... “Part of being a winner is knowing when enough is enough. Sometimes you have to give up the fight and walk away, and move on to something that's more productive.” — Donald Trump
Waving of ISIS flag in Kashmir oliticians quite often make stateP ments which are diabolically hilarious. They make such statements poker-faced. Perhaps they do not mean what they say: they may be just explaining away an inconvenient and embarrassing happening. Kashmir’s Farokh Abdulla has been in and out of government. He was a minister in the Congress government at the centre. He made a shocking statement about the waving of ISIS flags in Kashmir. He does not see anything wrong in this. The ISIS is no friend of India. The flag waving reveals that the dreaded terrorist organisation has some friends in Kashmir. The ISIS evidently does not want Kashmir, but its help might be sought by Pakistan. And for Farokh Abdulla, the ISIS flag waving by separatists and others in Kashmir is quite all right. He says “People of Kashmir are angry. They cannot be blamed if they wave flags of the ISIS”. And it is certain he has no objection to the waving of Pakistani flags too. He should be asked what would be the response of Pakistan if some pro-India groups there waved the Indian flag. By being in favour of the waving of the ISIS flag, Farokh Abdulla has reiterated the Kashmiriath spirit. The Mufti government has made a public statement that waving of Pakistan flag will not be allowed. In Pakistan however, not only Pakistan’s but also the ISIS flag is allowed to be waved. The BJP in the alliance government in Kashmir appears to have chosen to be silent on the subject. It looks like in all policy matters, the BJP has its own way and does not care to go by the advice of the BJP government at the centre.

NEW dialectic has commenced among fiscal – government earnings and expenditure — and monetary – national interest rate — policymakers as regards the respective extent of operational activities of the concerned authorities, in ensuring a successful and stable functioning of the country’s economy. The crux of the matter is to ensure that the economy is not subjected to hurdles from any potential logjam arising from conflicting viewpoints or an absence of requisite cooperation between the fiscal and monetary decision makers. The fiscal policy is managed by the central government through its Ministry of Finance, while the monetary policy formulation is the responsibility of a country’s central bank: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The fiscal-monetary debate is a continuous process in almost every stable polity. In India, the Union Finance Ministry’s responsibilities are to formulate sound economic policies, ensure the passage of legislations in Parliament for the benefit of the majority of the people, and to take care to see that any legislation is comprised of rationality, thoughtfulness, and bona fides.

for their economic upliftment, and generally ameliorate the country’s standard of living. Therefore, organized and bona fide investments are bound to be an imperative for the country’s rulers. Apart from increased investments, the Finance Ministry also gains if there is a surfeit, than before, of organized and thoughtful investments in the country. As a guardian of the country’s fiscal policy, with every new contribution or restructuring in the economy, the fiscal coffers of the government accrue greater revenue: it provides the government with more financial solvency to better fulfil its financial obligations towards its expenditure and various welfare schemes, geared towards the well being of the millions of needy and impoverished individuals, among the
Socio-economic firmament The RBI, as the country’s apex bank is trusted with the earnest responsibility of ensuring that the country’s official interest rates, which determine various types of financial borrowing for any kind of legal activity, help propel the growth and prosperity of the country. Additionally, the RBI oversees the currency reserves of the country, and releases or withdraws its amount in compatibility with levels of imports, exports, capital mobility, and price level, at any given period of time, so that the economic indicators of the country are not subjected to any unforeseen turbulence, with a potentially consequential adverse effect on the national socio-economic firmament. Ensuring increased economic growth is a paramount objective of the country’s rulers. The need for it is conspicuous as a lack of an appropriate growth rate would hold back the country’s development and keep blocked the possible avenues of employment, required for the country’s several millions of job-seekers — particularly the unskilled and semiskilled, for whom a spate of economic activities would open up more avenues for auxiliary jobs in the organized sector, which would by themselves be a no mean measure
BY AND LARGE Ranajoy Sen country’s populace. The primary necessity for the realization of such a goal is to decrease of the nominal interest rate of the country. For, a relative lowering of interest rates will make it easier for investors to borrow or administer acceptance of loans for their concerned businesses. But, therein lies the rub. The decision to bring down interest rates lies within the exclusive sphere of the RBI, and by extension, the ultimate discretion for it lies with the RBI Governor. If the Governor deems it inappropriate to reduce the interest rate then the interest rate does not see any alterations from its earlier position. The primary motive for the Governor to resist lowering the rate is a looming risk of the country’s price level, known commonly as inflation, to spiral upwards. As for the contemporary RBI concern, its Governor Dr. Raghuram Rajan is particularly concerned regarding the price level of the country. He seems to be insisting for a more efficacious utilization of the already myriad
Destiny works more or less consciously O
NE way is not more difficult than the other. It only depends on what temperament a person is born with. There is the persevering one who will go on striving against all difficulties; for him to go downhill is difficult, for him to renounce, to sacrifice is difficult. He is born with the spirit of attainment, he will go upwards in spite of all difficulties. If he lost his life it would not matter, he will go on in this path. And there is the other one who is born with renunciation. He will be content with all that comes, he is in harmony with conditions, he is in peace with people. Whether they treat him rightly or wrongly he will take it all peacefully, harmoniously, and in the end he will arrive at the same goal, in touch with the divine will. The next is the way of the cross: it is striving and being resigned at the same time. No doubt that is the most difficult way. The uphill way is the way of the master, the downhill way of the saint, but the way of the cross is the prophetic way. The prophets, in all ages in whichever part of the world they have come, have striven continually and have been resigned continually to all that comes. On the one hand active, on the other hand passive they progress
through life. Therefore their life is being pulled from both sides. When they walk one leg is pulled from the back, the other leg is pulled from the front; there are always two sides to their lives. At the same time either of these qualities can be found in each person as a temperament, and the secret of one's life's success and the fulfillment of one's life's purpose lie in taking one's natural way.
MATTER & SPIRIT If it happens that a man is born with a quality of striving continually, his way is striving. He must not be passive, he must not be resigned, for if he does so he will fail and not accomplish his life's purpose. But if it happens to be his temperament that he is resigned, always resigned to all that comes, then he must take that way. There is nobility of spirit, of soul, in both these ways. But if unfortunately it happens that a person is born with these two qualities at the same time, his problem in life will be the most difficult, for he can neither do one thing nor the other. No doubt if he goes on in this way, in the end there is success – but
investment in various sectors which have taken place; new as well as expansion and improvement of the already existing ones, in the Indian economy. Dr. Rajan has repeatedly made it clear that while he is not at all averse to lowering the interest rates of the country, he would not do so in any undue haste, unless he is certain that his actions would not be detrimental for the country’s economy, be it by any measure, in the short or the long run.
Rajan’s viewpoints The government seems to be fatly unimpressed with Rajan’s viewpoints, although it cannot possibly see any particular fault with his opinions. The emphasis of the government is more towards clearing the path to encourage further borrowings by industrialists and businessmen. Nevertheless, both the government and the RBI appear to have much substance with their respective stated positions. What is yet to evolve is probably a stable consensus between them, with some flexibility within the contours of that consensus, where both the finance ministry and the RBI can find room for agreement and disagreement, without any degeneration to a major dilemma, in the country’s economic scene. RBI Governors are obviously not against national economic growth. More than three decades back, in September, 1982, a newly appointed Governor of the RBI, Dr. Manmohan Singh – who later became the country’s finance minister and presided over the incipient stage of the economic liberalization and later still was the nation’s Prime Minister for a decade — had stated in an interview to The Telegraph newspaper that he was hopeful that the country would break out of the miserable growth rate hovering around 3 per cent, at that time. Today, country’s growth rate and its economic condition is much more robust; the current Governor of the RBI is surely eager to see it scale even higher records, but he has repeatedly called for organized and a disciplined approach towards it, so that its foundation is on strong ground. Union Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley, and RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan have no reason to be wary of each other’s work. But, in the debate surrounding the acceptable domains of the RBI and the Finance Ministry, it is a fervent hope that the outcome would be a strengthening of the efficacy and competence of both the fiscal and monetary decision makers, for the benefit of the country. success in the spiritual sense, not in a material sense. Now, the question arises whether destiny is working blindly, or whether it is working intelligently, consciously. Is it working with wisdom? The answer is that to some extent it is always working more or less consciously, but at the same time in its different ways of working its condition is different. For instance, a person has the habit of getting up at night while still asleep; he walks in the room and knocks against the door or the wall because his eyes are closed. That is one way of moving about in the room. There is another way: a person is thinking of his poetry, he does not know where he is going, whether to a corner of the room or to one or an other side; his mind is thinking of the poetry. He is walking but does not know towards what he is walking. His walking has a meaning, and no meaning. His walking is a stimulus to his inspiration; it helps him, but it is not conscious walking. Yet he knows that he is walking. And there is a third condition: when a person intentionally goes into a certain corner of the room in order to fetch something; he has a purpose in going there. Destiny works in these ways; the nature of life, of the whole of life, can be understood by studying the nature of man. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

Pakistan engineers terror acts in India THE suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist, infiltrated into India in a group of four. Udhampur attack comes nine days after the Gurdaspur terror strike in Punjab. Investigators have ruled out any link between the two attacks. This is the first time after the 26/11 Mumbai attacks that a terrorist is being captured alive. Full credit to our BSF to fight fire with fire but the loss of two of our security force personnel is an irreparable loss. It is time to have an upper hand in terror attacks and instead of the terrorist inflicting injuries and killing our personnel, we should be offensive and avoid infiltration to avoid trouble in our border areas and more so in J&K. The preliminary investigations revealed that they sneaked into Indian territory by cutting a fence on the Line of Control in the Kupwara-Baramulla sector. It is high time to keep a close vigil on our borders to ensure that our forces are well poised to repulse sudden attacks. The prize catch of a militant is a boost but that is not the ultimate end as we face deaths through such types of cowardly acts. Attack is the best form of defence. — Jayanthi Maniam, Sion
THESE well-timed terror attacks in India as well as in Pakistan are fixed by international lobbies with the help of their puppets in the government on both sides of the border. These staged attacks give the impression that religious and political scores are being settled when this is far from the truth. The real intention is to keep the region in a state of boil and to draw attention away from pressing domestic is-
ing and surprising that terrorists have attacked again at Udhampur after Dinanagar in Gurdaspur along with continuous violations at LOC which goes unabated and only as usual a lot of hue and cry is raised again which will die of cooly after sometime and no proper and suitable action is taken to avoid such further action further and situation will continue as usual. The question thus arises how long India will take such nonsense and violations lying down. A strong action will definitely bring down Pakistan to her knees which is already in severe economic doldrums and thus Pakistan can be taught a lesson without waging a war. Flood caused train crash FURY of flood is taking heavy toll of human life. Harda rail accident is one such major accident involving two trains in MP. Two passenger trains derailed almost at the same time because of flash floods set off by torrential rains saw the track cave in to the swollen river. The 500 metre rail track which caved in was not among the vulnerable sections identified by the Railways during the monsoon seas. But a sudden surge of water like a flash flood was suspected to be cause of the derailment of the two trains. The track base got weakened due to torrential rains, the tracks got washed out and the overhead contact of the engine got disconnected and the trains got stranded causing major accidents one after another. The passengers felt jerk instantly and in no time the train tilted and went below the tracks. It is a cause for great concern as train travel is becoming highly risky due to frequent accidents and robberies during train travel give the passengers a tough time. For a change we need not blame the human error and curse nature for its fury in taking away dear life in such major accidents. — S. Abhishek Ramaswamy, Nerul

It may be recalled that the lady had consumed alcohol in high measure and was driving in the wrong lane when she moved down a breadwinner of a family. What message are we sending to the people at large by granting bail to such people ? Do we want our streets to remain safe and free from accidents in the future ? Both may remain confused for in the process they would be hurting their own "religious brother". If each of us could have a

Comic NBW against ex-IPL czar APROPOS your article "Lalit Modi could be arrested soon as NBW issued" (ADC Aug 6), I cannot decide whether, by issuing an arrest warrant for Lalit Modi, the BJP is trying to salvage its damaged reputation for probity, or scoring a self goal. If Modi is arrested and made to testify in court - and in the media - there is little doubt that he will use every trick in the book to extricate himself, even if he has to implicate his "friends" Sushma Swaraj and Vasundhara Raje in the process. The media are going to love him, because he is guaranteed to provide prime entertainment. In other words, the BJP would be opening a can of worms that is likely to bite its behind. Of course, it is possible that the BJP is working out a secret deal to go through the motions of
poor youth of Jammu and Kashmir and also Afghanistan in the name of brotherhood and jihad to help them in their activities. They kill people so barbarously for no reason at all. In order to stop all these terrorist activities, we must live in harmony and be friendly with our neighbouring countries, especially Pakistan and not fight in the name of religion. Only then we will be able to rid our nation of terrorism and all such corrupt activities. — Jubel D’Cruz, Dombivili
THE terrorist strike on a BSF convoy in Jammu & Kashmir's Udhampur district adds to the strain in India-Pakistan relations. Coming on the heels of the Gurdaspur attack, the Udhampur strike has resulted in the deaths of two BSF jawans and a militant. While GPS sets used by the Gurdaspur terrorists reveal they are from Pakistan, Udhampur's captured terrorist has said he's from Faisalabad in Punjab, Pakistan. The Amarnath yatra may have been among their targets. Covert warfare enthusiasts in Pakistan's military and deep state should note that should a mass casualty strike succeed on Indian soil, and is accompanied by captured terrorists from Pakistan who blow their cover, it would be clear evidence of a mini-invasion of India that could trigger a wider war. To head that off security cooperation is cooperation is essential. In this respect a newspaper article by Tariq Khosa, former director general of Pakistan's federal investigation agency, is instructive. Pakistani investigators, in fact, had done a professional job collating evidence that conclusively proved that 2611 terrorists including Ajmal Kasab had been launched from Pakistan, confirming the Indian narrative of the attack. — Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai

I COULD not control my laughter when I read about an NBW being issued against the fugitive Lalit Modi. The reasons are: The warrant would have to be served through the British Embassy as the accused is residing in that country. Then the extradition proceedings will start to bring the accused to India to stand trial; subject to the existence of an agreement to that effect between the two countries. And finally, the entire legal process in the largest democracy of the world will see to it that the final verdict would be out at the time of the celebration of Lalit Modi’s, may be, 90th birthday. — Arun Malankar, Santacruz

E
ighteen years ago, Jashwant Mehta would have never thought that his restaurant would have a following large enough to be reknowned across the city. Amidst the chaotic Juhu Tara Road, Hotel Emerald stands tall with a quaint restaurant called Sapphire on the ground floor. The entrance has a small nook where bakery products are displayed which looks promising for someone looking forward to a wholesome meal. Sapphire has a sophisticated vibe to it and assures a unique experience with its 'Zero-oil' menu. The cholesterol-free food is the specialty of the restaurant which Mehta introduced right at the beginning. An architect by profession, Mehta is also an ardent food lover. His inspiration for an oil-free menu came from a cardiologist's lecture he attended many years ago and wanted people to eat healthy. Back in 1997 when I opened the hotel, I wanted to offer something different in the restaurant section. I have studied vegetarianism in detail, and am focused on staying healthy. So I thought I should introduce the oil-free cuisine which does not compromise on taste, he said. Mehta also wanted people to know
that oil-free food can be as tasty as food with oil and not just boiled food as is generally believed. The cozy ambience is comfortable enough for a family to spend hours here and return for the quiet it extends. I begin with a glass of sugarcane juice, which has a prominency of ginger in it and tastes freshout-of-farm. The starters are Tandoori Broccoli, one of the oil-free specialties of the restaurant that was much-awaited by a fatty-food lover like me. For those who do not have an inclination to have broccoli, this is a refreshing change as the marinade coated over the vegetable is delicious and leaves a strong aftertaste. It shall remain one of my favourites at the restaurant. The mixed vegetable platter comes in a large portion and is satisfying for those who look for simple yet appetising quality in their meal. It is followed by Lebanese Fatoush- a salad with the ingredients so delicately diced and dressed with vinaigrette and pita bread, it looks too attractive to be eaten. The soup that follows the salad, Corn and Bell pepper Chowder comes with bread and smells inviting, tastes sharp and leaves an aftertaste that makes me want to ask for another bowl. In a battle to choose between Oriental, Chinese and Indian cuisines, Indian cuisine wins as I am recommended it by the Chef himself. Time for the main course, of course – most looked forward to in the experience at Sapphire. The 'zero-oil' Kofta Curry is first to catch my at-
tention as the moment it touches the tongue, a 'fusion dance' of flavours begins. The Kofta melts in my mouth as I am served with Paneer Churchuri – an Awadhi specialty the restaurant retained in its menu after an Awadhi food festival they had hosted a few months ago. “The Awadhi cuisine has gotten us the best response and hence we decided to retain many of these recipes,” Chef Jagjit Singh recalled and said that in the past few years that he has been working at Sapphire as Executive Chef, the Awadhi festival was the most well received. “Awadhi cuisine,” he explained, “is distinct in its taste because of the whole spices and a hint of charcoal we add in it. We have a different cuisine festival every month, but Awadhi has been a different experience altogether for our customers.” The Dal Dum Pukht that is served along with lemon rice

next, proves his point. The dal, with slightly burnt smell tasted so nice, it takes a while to recover from the flavour to assess it. “My personal favourites are clear vegetable soup and oil-free Kofta,” Mehta admits. The meal ends with Phirnee as dessert, made in north-Indian style. The chopped almonds perfectly blends with the creamy texture. Anyone who does not have the appetite left after a heavy meal would miss out on an enticing dessert offered at Sapphire. My skepticism about the 'zero-oil' food being delicious entirely disappears as I finish my meal and send my compliments to the Chef. Sapphire is one place which has cozy ambience that invites regular customers. Like every family has a common favourite place of eating out, Sapphire is one of those restaurants one would reminisce someday about being a family's favourite where one would love to return and make more memories.

>> If you’re heading to Greece during the financial crisis, make sure you’re well-prepared
When in Greece… Everyone is packing their bags and heading to Greece, with the financial crisis making it an affordable destination. While visiting may not be such a bad idea, you need to be well-prepared! Yamini Walia & Pooja Salvi bring you a guide that will come in handy
9
6 billion US dollars — that’s how much the latest Greek bailout agreement is worth! When a country is in such bad financial condition, you cannot help but wonder if it’s really a good time to visit. Since around 20% of the GDP in Greece is generated from tourism, you may also be thinking of generously adding to their coffers as you enjoy the holiday of a lifetime. We know that you’re still sceptical about how safe it is to visit. Greece is still, however, as beautiful as ever and could use a financial boost from travellers who are willing to enjoy the marvellous food, history, beaches and culture. Read on to find out more about the crisis and about how you can make the most of a holiday in Greece.
n What is the crisis about?
If you have no idea what the crisis in Greece is about, you’ve been living under a rock! The news has been trending across the world, so you should consider picking up a paper once in a while! In simple terms, Greece had borrowed large sums of money to try and buy itself time to stabilise its finances. While the loans did help the nation to a certain extent, the economic problems haven’t completely gone away. Rather than making its way into the economy, the bailout money mainly went to paying off Greece’s international debt. Besides this, the government still has a staggering debt load that it cannot get rid of unless it manages to recover.
n Should I be worried about strikes, violence and/or any
civil unrest? There haven’t been any recorded instances of politicallyinduced violence against tourists in Greece since the ’70s. In fact, the biggest threat that tourists in Greece face is irresponsible drinking and drowning. The country and its citizens have been patient with tourists throughout this crisis. In fact, we think visiting Greece is a win-win situation for everyone — it’s a bargain due to the low prices and the tourism can help Greece get back on its feet. n Where can I expect a bargain or a decrease in price for
cruises, hotels, food, accommodation and shopping? Nothing in Greece is going to be very cheap. Inflation in Greece has steadily decreased and prices have definitely gone down compared to the rates in 2010, but this is mostly true for services, not for products. Popular destinations such as Mykonos or Santorini are comparatively expensive because demand and supply define the prices. On average, you can assume they are going to be standard European prices. You can expect the hotels to be around 20-30% cheaper and the trip will cost you around 10-20% less than it otherwise would. A bonus with the newly elected government is that there are no demonstrations, the riot police are (almost) absent from the roads, no tear gas is used and there are no fences in Syntagma square! n Will I be able to use my credit card?
Your credit cards should work in Greece, but some hotels, restaurants and shops may insist only on cash payments. However, you should be aware of the possibility that banking services (including credit card processing and cash withdrawal at the ATMs) throughout Greece could potentially shut down on short notice. So, we suggest you keep some cash at hand. n Will I be able to withdraw money from the ATMs, or will
I have to walk around with Euros in my pocket? The ATMs in Greece have a limit of 60 Euros per day on Continued on pg 14 «

continued from pg 13 « each withdrawal. However, this is applicable only on the Greece cards, and tourists haven’t begun to experience any trouble yet — you can withdraw as much as you wish, depending on the limit your bank has set on your card. But, it is advisable to keep some cash handy to cover the duration of your stay and to account for emergencies and delays. Credit cards are used almost everywhere, especially at large supermarkets, large gas stations, hotels and most restaurants in tourist areas.
MUMBAI | FRIDAY, AUGUST 7, 2015 >> Mykonos is fondly called the Little Venice of Greece
n Will there be any food, medical or petrol shortages?
The tourist office in Greece recently confirmed that the provision of food and medical supplies in the country is adequate. With reference to the petrol shortage, travelling in Greece is similar to travelling in Goa — you hire bikes or cars. In this case, the suppliers have their own fuel reserves on site, so when you’re hiring cars or bikes, you should ask the supplier if there will be any problems sourcing fuel. Also, several car-forhire companies allow customers to rent a car or a bike with a full tank.
EXPERT SPEAK >> Santorini is among the most romantic places in the world
TRAvEl TIPS
“Towards the end of June and the first week of July, when the crisis took place, you could negotiate and get better deals because there was a loss in inventory. But, now there’s no point waiting — simply book your holiday! Some people have travel insurance, which protects you from cancellations. So, if your insurance covers trip protection, you would definitely benefit. However, it all depends on the type of travel insurance you get because in India, most people buy only health-related insurance, which doesn’t cover vacation expenses. To sum it up, I would say that all our customers who have been to Greece lately have had happy trips. There has been no problem in terms of food or even ATM withdrawals. It’s more about media hype when it comes to tourism.” — Kanika Gandhi, COO at Cutting Edge Journey
>> The sight of the Acropolis at night will leave you spellbound
>> Renting a moped in Greece is ideal
Here are a few travel tips that will help you explore Greece on a budget. n It’s ideal to rent a moped, especially when you can’t ride the train. It’s comparatively cheaper than renting a car and a convenient way to explore Greece’s many towns and cities. n Try to book a ferry ticket well in advance. You can save up to 25% if you book the ferries at least two months in advance. n If you’re planning on island hopping, booking overnight ferries is the best option. Otherwise, the inter-island day ferries can prove to be quite expensive. n Street snacks are your best option if you’re on a budget. They will keep you full for less than 10 Euros per day. n If you’re travelling on a very tight budget, avoid a visit to Mykonos. It’s a very expensive island with hardly any budget accommodation.
THE ATTRACTIONS We all know how beautiful Greece is, so there are several things you can do and places that you can visit while you’re in the country. Here we tell you about a few land of islands Greece certainly is the land of islands as it has over 3,000 of them! But, only 130 are inhabited. So, island hopping may be the perfect thing to do. The Cyclades Islands are a great option because each island there boasts of stunning scenery and has its own distinct character.
Athens Athens will transport you back in time with its sheer wealth of history. The centre of Athens is a 3km pedestrian zone, leading to the archaeological park where you can witness the majesty of the Acropolis, including its legendary Parthenon temple, Ancient Agora and Temple of Olympian Zeus.
Santorini Think: white and blue houses and what is the first place that pops into your head? We’re sure it’s the beautiful, volcanic island of Santorini! This “precious gem of the Aegean” is considered to be one of the most romantic places on earth, with idyllic cliff top towns, glorious sunsets and volcanic beaches with red, white or black sand.
The Acropolis Your visit to Athens will be incomplete if you don’t witness the architectural marvel that is the Acropolis. Built entirely out of
marble, the temple used to house a giant statue of Athena, the city’s patron goddess. Stone-paved paths will lead you to a plethora of white Doric columns, monuments and temples gleaming in the sunlight. Illuminated at night, the Acropolis lends a magnificent view that will leave you spellbound.
Mykonos This can easily be called the Little Venice of Greece, with its winding streets, colourful balconies and charming hideaways. Mykonos is also the perfect destination if you’re looking to party the night away.
The Meteora The Meteora of Thessaly, in Central Greece, this is a collection of six Greek Orthodox monasteries built on sandstone rock pillars. If you’re a hiker, this is the perfect place for you as the monasteries are accessible only by steps that have cut into the rock formations.
Crete beaches From secluded beaches with the softest white sand and enchanting coves with glistening coloured pebbles, to vast stretches of sandy gold and rocky coastlines, the beaches in Crete are everything a true sun-lover dreams of. However, when you feel the need to stay out of the sun for a little while, head to the magnificent Knossos Palace.

wouldn’t go so far as to call myself an expert when it comes to spas and spa treatments. While I’ve been to some, I’ve never had a complete spa experience, so I was excited about visiting Spa by JW Marriott, and if you’re not a spa enthusiast yet, this is the best place to begin. Located on the 10th floor of the JW Marriott Hotel Mumbai Sahar at Andheri, the spa has an intricate web of passages and corridors, housing seven treatment rooms that include a couple’s treatment room and an Ayurvedic treatment room. They also have a suave jacuzzi, with a beautiful view of the city. The staff is hospitable and gave me a thorough tour of the entire spa, which offers a host of services that are divided into four categories– Calm, Indulge, Invigorate and Renew. The treatments under Calm, as the name suggests, are meant to put you in a state of tranquility, while Indulge aims to pamper and nourish your soul. Invigorate, on the other hand strives to enliven your body and provide clarity of mind, while Renew provides a sense of overall well-being. I decided to try the Ultimate Aroma Therapy Treatment (`4,350) and the Relaxing Massage (`4,650) under Invigorate. A 25-minute treatment, the Relaxing Massage is one of their express treatments and is meant for guests in a hurry. I was made to kneel face down on one of their chairs, while the masseuse massaged my back and shoulders. I was told that the chair was heated in order to promote blood circulation. As uncomfortable as the position sounds, it was quite comfortable and as the masseuse massaged my back, I instantly felt my tense shoulders relax. Before the treatment, I didn’t even realise that I had any tension in my shoulders to begin with! After the Relaxing Massage, I was taken to one of their gorgeous treatment rooms for the Ultimate Aroma Therapy treatment. My feet were washed with a solution of salt, water and lime — a combination that is believed to release negative energy from the body. I then

lay back on the comfortable massage table, which was also heated. Using fragrant oil, the masseuse massaged away the stress from my arms, legs, back and shoulders. By the end of the 60-minute treatment, I felt relaxed enough to fall into a deep slumber. After the massage, I took a relaxing shower in one of their wellequipped shower rooms and sipped on a delicious, herbal tea. Lounging in my bathrobe, I couldn’t help but beam into the
distance, feeling dazed, but refreshed at the same time. The treatments are very highly priced (quite predictably so), but given how relaxing they are, I wouldn’t mind spending a little extra in order to treat myself. AN UNCONVENTIONAL
TREAT W e reached Mirchi & Mime on a rather cool evening. Once we were inside, the first thing that impressed me was the friendly, positive vibe emanating from the place. This restaurant has gained an impressive number of followers since its launch in mid-April. For those who aren’t aware of the concept behind Mirchi & Mime, it boasts of a 27-member deaf and mute service staff — pretty impressive, right? If you’re thinking that this might come in the way of placing an order, you are wrong. My companion and I were there for a little over an hour and a half, and we hardly noticed the difference. The staff is extremely humble and friendly. When you take your table, you will be introduced to your waiter by one of the managers, who will also explain the process of placing orders. You will be given two different menus, where you can read instructions about how to place your order with numbers at the side. And, in a pleasant turn of events in our experience at a new restaurant, every dish we ordered left us thoroughly impressed — the starters, the drinks, the main course and the dessert — everything was just brilliant! To begin our experience, my companion ordered the Kashmiri Nalli Shorba (`185), which was an interesting
While several restaurants struggle to introduce something out-of-the-box, Mirchi & Mime win you over with genuine service and a different idea. Pooja Salvi tells you more
version of nalli nihari. While, I was expecting the meat to be chewy, to my surprise the mutton was cooked to perfection and the shorba was delicious! The texture of the soup was right on the mark and the presentation was top notch. And it was so light; it left me wanting more. Next we called for the Assorted Tava Platter(`185), which is a surprising take on the famous sev puri, with toppings of water chestnut, mushroom, suran and kothimbir. The variety of sauces that they serve with this delightful dish add to its flavours. After this, we ordered the corn-offthe-cob (`185), that is, predictably, corn on the cob. The classic dish was served neatly with toothpicks that made it easy to pick and eat. We decided to try a popular classic next, the Chicken Lollipops (`235). And boy, were we surprised! They make the dish in a unique manner as the meat isn’t crispy, but deliciously soft. Their sauce is a good combination of sweet and spicy and the meat is on point. Their Duck Seekh (`315) is wellcooked, but so spicy that it didn’t work well for me; my companion fell in love with it though. Another noteworthy starter dish that I loved was their Crispy Bacon and Baby Spinach Salad (`185). Served with lemon and raspberry vinaigrette, I instantly fell
in love with this dish. However, my companion who is of the belief that salads are a waste of space in the stomach didn’t enjoy this dish so much. Despite being stuffed, everything still read so delicious that we decided to squeeze in some more food. The Tariwala Chicken (`315) went really well with the brown rice that my companion had and the parathas that I had ordered. We ordered three desserts — the Fresh Apple Crumble (`185), Nutella and Toffee Tarte Fine (`185) and the Coconut Creme Brulee (`185). All the desserts were flawlessly made with the Coconut Creme Brulee being our favourite. To sum up, I would recommend Mirchi & Mime for a date or a nice family dinner. Not that the place is not suited for a meal with friends, but the ambience is so quiet and calming that it’s a better date spot than a hangout zone. Also, this can prove to be a quick test of how patient your partner can be! The food is delicious, the staff is delightful and the place is worth every penny and the minute you spend there. F
ood connoisseurs, amateur food lovers and kitchen enthusiasts are always looking for new and improved ways for their fill of gourmet ingredients, imported food items and innovative products. So, the people at Gourmetdelight.in got it right when they decided to set up a website for people looking for organic, artisanal and gourmet products. There is a convenience to shopping online and since this particular website offers to fulfill all your culinary dreams, we were understandably excited! They have organic vegetables, fruits, cakes, spices, super foods… and the list goes on. Our treats arrived in a big cardboard box. However impressive the box might seem, they could have used smaller packaging or sectioned things out just a little better, because when items such as chocolates and juice cans begin to hit each other during transport, you’re going to end up with dented cans and fragmented chocolate pieces. Although, most of our goodies remained intact, including the
delicious date and coffee cookies and the flavoured cashew nuts, which we could not stop munching on. The site is a great place to pick up items such as Belgian chocolate, DCC cashew nuts, Ambrosia Assorted Dates and cans of fruit juice, all of which work as perfect party food. They even have glass markers that you can add to this mix!
Navigating the website Browsing through the website is easy, but it isn’t different from the rest. With the usual suspects as categories, they seem like they have a vast range but upon further inspection, they could do with a much larger collection considering that there’s a generous slew of gourmet websites. Their chocolates miss the brands we would usually classify as gourmet. They’re also missing out on giving bakers easy access to baking equipment and while their cheese section does do better than others, it still lacks a slight gourmet touch. Their berries and seeds section has a good mix of products and the organic fruit and
Log on to www.gourmetdelight.in vegetable tabs will go down well with the health conscious. They also have platters, bowls, kitchen equipment and a predictable coffee and tea section. Prices are not very high, but they’re not a steal either. Gourmetdelight.in could use a few additions to their expansive list. But, if you’re looking for products that you would buy in a supermarket rather than at the local corner shop, this is a good place to log on to. Delivery is easy, packaging is better than most and we’re never ones to reject a site that allows us to shop for treats so comfortably!

he drive from Rajahmundry, one of Andhra Pradesh’s (AP) major cities, to Dindi, which is 80 km away, is a distressing on. And no, I don’t say this because of the usual infrastructural maladies plaguing most Indian intra state highways such as potholes, air pollution and vehicular congestion, which bring on dangerous human emotions such as road rage and its ilk! I say this because, a few weeks ago, while driving down AP’s startlingly smooth and congestionfree NH16 — towards a weekend of R&R at a resort I was booked into — I was gobsmacked. For once in my life, I couldn’t comprehend the various shades of green my cityweary eyes were trying to absorb. To my left was a type of viridian-jade green blended hue, while to my right was olive (or so it seemed), but I wasn’t quite sure. And this conundrumlike state continued as we drove past nursery after nursery that lines the aforementioned highway for at least 25 km south of Rajahmundry, each selling every conceivable type of tree sapling and flowering plant.

destination divine But, it was a little later as we turned left, off the NH16, when another visual treat greeted us — palm-fringed canals and backwaters that typify this part of AP known as Konaseema, which produces over 80% of the state’s rice crop. And it was in this East Godavari district of the state that my destination, Dindi – By The Godavari, beckoned. Reflecting Dindi’s serene countryside, vast lakes and canals strewn with palms, this Sterling Holiday Resort’s focal point —the lotus pond — is what first greets visitors when they enter through the colonnaded path lined with mahogany pillars sourced from an 80-year-old abandoned local home. Replete with croaking frogs and koi carp, the lotus pond is a virtual ecosystem in which seven different kinds of lotuses thrive, giving the illusion of a floating carpet. The main resort itself may be diminutive in size, with only 50 rooms including its Privilege and Premiere class suites, but what this means is that guests enjoy a rather bespoke and boutique weekend experience that I soon became privy to as I was handed a cold towel and a tender coconut to slake my thirst. >> Partake in activities such as jet-skiing and fishing excursions in Dindi

From n Draksharamam Temple the lotus photographs that adorn n Ksheerarama Temple the walls of well-appointed guest n Dowleswaram Barrage bedrooms and suites, to the lotus leaf-stamped inlays on the meandering garden walking path, its floral presence is unmissable. phenomenon. For a unique experience, visit the Sir Arthur Cotton Museum in Dowleswaram, which is an hour and a half away from Dindi. Constructed in 1998, this museum pays tribute to Sir Arthur Thomas Cotton, a British irrigation engineer, also known as Cotton Dora, who designed the Dowleswaram Barrage in 1852 and is revered in the Godavari district for his efforts in transforming the Godavari from a threatening and deadly natural force into a tame and fertile water resource. Sir Arthur Thomas Cotton is fondly called the Delta Architect of the Godavari district because of his pioneering work in irrigation, engineering through his construction of the anicut system — the type of dam. The museum narrates the making of Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage, which is constructed with advanced engineering skill for its time. It also bears the distinction of being the only civil engineering museum in AP.
happily river after! Coming back to the Godavari, Dindi – By the Godavari offers a host of river-centric activities. You can indulge in an array, from jet-skiing and jet-boating to fishing excursions and even an overnight houseboat stay. However, since swimming in the rather treacherous waters of the Godavari is off limits, the resort’s pool is the perfect place for a spot of R&R. As is the spa, which offers treatments that guarantee to calm both the mind and body — if the tranquillity of this bucolic haven hasn’t worked its charm on you already! For after hours, the resort’s Sunset Bar by the pool and the Cocktail Lounge by the lotus pond are must-visit spots for nursing a potent coconut water-based cocktail, as you let its magnificence sink right into the very depths of your being. Ah, bliss! Pictures courtesy of Dindi – By The Godavari
heading out… While the sleepy village of Dindi itself might not hold much sway as a happening tourist destination (not that anyone’s complaining!), heading out to discover the neighbouring sights and sounds is a must after you’ve had your fill of tranquil solitude. Besides a number of temples that are worth visiting (see box above), there is one place that is simply unavoidable! Around 14 km away from Dindi, Antarvedi is a village with a difference, because it is here that the Vasishta Godavari, a tributary of the Godavari, and the Bay of Bengal meet in a lusty embrace, as the tranquil Godavari flows into the roaring ocean. A trek up to the lighthouse on the Antarvedi beach gives you a bird’s eye view of this unforgettable
fact file Getting there
The nearest airport to Dindi is Rajahmundry Airport, which is 80 km away, followed by Vijayawada Airport which is 176 km away. The resort arranges for airport transfers for an additional fee.
When to visit
Although the best time to visit is between October and March, the monsoon, which lasts from June to September, is a glorious time to be in this bucolic part of India that wears a lush, verdant cover.

Improved air connectivity would make a major contribution to the government’s efforts to make it easier to do business in India. For that, we need a policy framework that reduces onerous taxes and regulation and that continues to improve infrastructure and cost efficiency. Aviation has much to contribute to any country’s economy. But it will not happen by accident. The peak travel season should serve as a reminder to all governments of the importance of aviation policies focused on enabling aviation to catalyze economic growth...That is what we are hoping for in India with the imminent announcement of its new aviation policy.
Tony Tyler, IATA’s Director General and CEO BUSINESS BRIEFS 149 Central Infra Projects Battle Time And Cost Overruns
A total of 174 central government infrastructure projects are expected to be commissioned this fiscal, with 149 battling time overruns, Parliament was informed yesterday. "174 projects are due for commissioning in the current financial year 2015-16 against their original/revised/anticipated dates of completion. "Of these, 2 projects are due for commissioning ahead of schedule, 23 are due for commissioning on schedule and 149 are due for commissioning with time overruns," Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation V K Singh said in a written reply in Rajya Sabha. The government through the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation monitors ongoing central sector infrastructure projects costing Rs 150 crore and above in time and cost overruns.
CPI Inflation To Average 5.6% This Fiscal, Says DBS
Retail inflation in India is likely to average around 5.6% this year, down from 6.1% in financial year 2014-15, says a DBS report. According to the global financial services firm, inflation has eased significantly over the past year, but a sub-par monsoon and fading base effects from earlier falls in commodity prices would prevent further disinflation. "Overall, inflation this year is likely to average a benign 5.6%, down from 6.1% in financial year 2014-15, but the trajectory will matter to the RBI," DBS said in a research note. "While low inflation gives the RBI room to cut, supply- shocks from sub-par monsoon and commodity price movements could prevent this from occurring," the DBS research note added.
Govt Capital Infusion In PSBs Credit Positive, Says Moody's The government's decision to infuse Rs 70,000 crore in PSU banks is a credit positive but "not a game changer" as the amount is relatively small and they will have to access capital from markets to meet their needs, Moody's said yesterday. In the recent times the PSU banks have not been able to access capital market which is a "key negative driver of their overall credit profile", Moody's Investors Service said. Banks will have to demonstrate their ability to raise funds from equity market, it said in a report -- Government Capital Infusion Into State-Owned Banks is Credit Positive, But Not a Game Changer. The government has estimated capital requirement of PSU banks over four years till 2018-19 at Rs 1.80 lakh crore. Of this, the government would infuse Rs 70,000 crore, while the remaining Rs 1.10 lakh crore would be raised from market.

Norms For Corporate Agents Soon, Says IRDA
Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDA) may finalise the norms for corporate agents such as banks, IRDA Chairman T S Vijayan said yesterday. "This (guidelines) has been approved by the board. After the approval, it has to go through the legal vetting before coming to the gazette," Vijayan told reporters on the sidelines of a programme. The new draft guidelines state that the corporate agents, instead of having tieups with a minimum of two insurers, may now choose from one to a maximum of three insurers in any particular line of the business. The regulator had published the draft norms and approved the final norms after wide range of consultations with stakeholders and Government agencies. "The notification may come in three to four weeks time.

It then declined and turned into a range bound movement until 11.24 a.m. The index then declined further into the red and registered the day’s low at the 8551 points level at 12.10 p.m. It then rose sharply into the green and registered the day’s high at the 8606 points level at 2.23 p.m. The index then declined and turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. The Nifty witnessed a volatile session and moved in a range of 55 points.
TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) decreased 16.22%. This change is substantial but indicates a moderate participation by investors. Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was negative. Amongst all the traded stocks, 641 were gainers, 829 were losers and 38 remained unchanged.
Slow Stochastic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen in the neutral zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is above the slow D line (positive if it continues).
R SI Indicator: The RSI is above the 40 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).
MACD Indi cator: The MACD is above zero and is rising (positive if it continues). It has crossed above its 9-day Average (positive and a buy signal).
ADX Indicator & DI Lines: The +DI line is above the –DI line and both lines are diverging (positive if it continues). The ADX is falling while the Market Index is rising, which indicates that the present up trend is decreasing in strength.
support is at the 8332 points level. The next support is at the 8214 points level.
Resistance Levels The immediate main resistance is at the 8592 points level. The next resistance is at the 8667 points level.
Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 8582 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 8558. Support (2) = 8527. Resistance (1) = 8613. Resistance (2) = 8637. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index has formed a doji pattern. This indicates indecisiveness amongst investors. The next candle formation will confirm whether the bias is towards the buy or sell side of the market. However, the 5 day moving average has crossed above the 15 day moving average. This is positive and a buy signal. The index is above its 5, 15, 25 and 200 day moving averages. Further, the velocity parameters too indicate strength. All these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of a further up move unfolding. Incidentally, the index is approaching a major resistance level at the 8592 points level. (The index tested that level intra-day, yesterday) There is a possibility that it could find some resistance there. However, if it crosses above it then a further rise can be expected. Investors are advised to hold long positions.
Work with strict stop losses on all positions
Moving Averages (Trend Indicators) The index: Is above its 5-day average (at 8549) Positive. Is above its 15-day average (at 8515) Positive. Is above its 25-day average (at 8493) Positive. Is above its 200-day average (at 8439) Positive.
Overall Market Strength/Weakness: The indicators and oscillators discussed here are indicating a strong market but with a neutral bias.
Support Levels: For short-term traders the immediate main

n analysis of capital investments across 22 large sectors by CRISIL Research shows that the slide in investments continues and it expect s a 2% decline in the current fiscal. What’s more worrying is that private investments – on skid row since the last couple of years – are expected to decline around 8% this fiscal. Utilisation rates in 10 out of 12 large industrial sectors are wallowing at 5-year lows causing new project announcements to dry up. Consequently, fresh investments (projects announced / awarded in past 1 year) are expected to account for a mere 20 per cent of total investments. As a result, says Crisil “we believe that a meaningful recovery in capital investments will only be visible from fiscal 2017 - - when we expect to see a 7% increase.” Crisil believes Industrial sectors
will be the drag. According to it “Industrial capex, which accounts for close to 30% of aggregate capital investments, is expected to decline sharply by 16% this fiscal, mainly due to low utilisation rates. On the other hand, infrastructure investments will grow at a moderate 4% helped by favourable policy changes and higher budgetary allocations (there was a 50% increase in allocation towards infrastructure in the last budget.). A sector-wise snapshot of investments reveals large sectors such as power generation, aluminium, steel, cement and refining & marketing are weighing on investments, while the infrastructure segments such as urban infrastructure, national highways and renewable energy are preventing a bigger decline in overall investments. Low capacity utilisation is the key challenge faced by most industrial sectors. For 10 out of 12 large indus-

trial sectors Crisil analysed, current capacity utilisation is lower than their 5-year average. For instance, in the metals space – particularly steel and aluminium – India has created surplus capacities in the last few years and is turning into a net exporter from being a net importer. In addition, sectors such as refining & marketing and petrochemicals are also being affected due to the global decline in commodity prices. Apart from paper, most sectors are very close to their 5-year lows in term of capacity utilisation and still some time away from their peak utilisation rates. Till the gap narrows, it is very difficult to envisage a broadbased pick-up in the capex cycle.

CBDT Signs 14 Advance Pricing Agreements To Usher In Certainty In Taxation By A Business Reporter
A
s a part of a major initiative to usher in certainty in taxation, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) entered into two unilateral Advance Pricing Agreements (APAs) on 3 August, 2015 with two Multi-National Companies (MNCs) which includes the first APA with a “Rollback” provision. With this, the CBDT has so far signed 14 APAs of which 13 are unilateral and one is a bilateral. The 14 APAs signed relate to various sectors like telecommunication, oil exploration, pharmaceuticals, finance/banking, software development services and ITeS (BPOs), says a Ministry of Finance release. Unilateral APAs are agreed between Indian taxpayers and the CBDT, without involvement of the tax authorities of the country where the associated enterprise is based. Bilateral APAs include agreements between the tax authorities of the two countries. An APA with the “Rollback” provision extends tax certainty for nine financial years as against five years in APAs without “Rollback”. APAs settle transfer prices and the methods of setting prices of international transactions in advance. The Government is committed
to conclude a large number of APAs to foster an environment of tax cooperation and certainty. Currently, a number of unilateral as well as bilateral APAs with Competent Authorities of UK and Japan etc are at advanced stage of negotiations. A Framework Agreement was recently signed with United States under the Mutual Agreement Procedure (MAP) provision of the India-US Double Taxation Avoidance Convention (DTAC). This is a major positive development. About 200 past transfer pricing disputes between the two countries in Information Technology (Software Development) Services [ITS] and Information Technology enabled Services [ITeS] segments are expected to be resolved under this Agreement during the current year. So far, 35 disputes have been resolved and another 100 are likely to be resolved in the next three months. The Framework Agreement with the US opens the door for signing of bilateral APA with the US. ctress Deepika Padukone, who faced depression in the past, feels it is a major health issue in the country today which needs to be addressed. "The fight against depression is a cause very close to my heart and is one of the largest health issues facing the country today. Having experienced depression in the recent past, I realise how difficult it is to recognise the problem, find information and get the right kind of professional help," Deepika said. The actress on Thursday launched on Twitter the logo of her 'The Live Love Laugh' Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to addressing the issue of mental health in India. The foundation's logo is based on the idea of hope and freedom. "I was fortunate to get the kind of support and through this platform I hope others get the same kind of help. My team and I are working hard to set up the foundation and the logo launch is a small step in that direction." The flying birds in the logo signify this very essence of the foundation. The logo also has a baseline 'Foundation Against Depression' that represents its mission. Deepika had first spoken about her plans to set up the foundation in an interview with a news channel. She talked about how

ctor Jackie Shroff, who has done several films with Madhuri Dixit in the past, says he now wants to do a romantic film with the noted actress. Jackie and Madhuri worked together in several films, including "Devdas", "Lajja", "Khal Nayak", "100 Days", "Parinda", "Prem Deewane", "Ram Lakhan" and "Sangeet". "Madhuri should do more films, she should do a film with me where she is romancing me. On a level that has more grace... We are waiting for the right script and we hope we get one," the 58-year-old actor said. "I follow the work of my contemporaries. I love their work. They are doing well. Sunny (Deol) is doing fantastic work, he is doing what he is best at – beating up people convincingly. Anil (Anil Kapoor) is doing well... He is good at making people laugh," he said. Jackie, who will be seen next in actiondrama film "Brothers" alongside Akshay Kumar and Siddharth Malhotra says: "Action has changed a lot today. In those days it was difficult and I have injured myself many times as there was less safety. Nowadays, technology is available and insurance is also there," he said. Also, there is a huge difference in the way things work in the film industry, from acting to scripting, and Jackie says the only thing that has not changed is emotions.

Kiara made her debut in 2014 comedy drama film, "Fugly" directed by Kabir Sadanand, and shared screen space with newcomers Mohit Marwah, Vijender Singh, Arfi Lamba and Jimmy Shergill. "I am grateful that "Fugly" came my way. I did get benefit from the film. There is something coming up (a film) but I can't talk about it. I would like to do romantic, romantic-comedy film," Kiara said. She was also the celebrity showstopper for AAKS Jewels at the ongoing India International Jewellery Week 2015. Wearing a Fuchsia pink coloured strapless gown, Kiara looked gorgeous as she adorned a necklace and a mangtikka. "It was a great opportunity to walk the ramp for "Beti" it's a great way to support the cause. Then I walked the ramp for AAKS Jewels. espite mixed reports of her latest Bollywood comeback movie, South side regional megastar Shriya Saran who plays Ajay Devgn's de-glam wife in 'Drishyam', seems elated with the "positive responses" to her grey-shades role with a streak of violence. Quite often people are perplexed to hear Saran speaking fluent Hindi. “Maybe, they need to know that I originally belong to Dehradun and I have completed my education in North India. Besides my screen-persona, I am also a trained classical dancer which is why I got easily accepted in the South “shrugs Shriya who has been tagged in the media there as the 'Ultimate South Hottie'. With her 'glam-babe' image wasn't she apprehensive playing a saree-clad screen-mother of two kids? "Honestly, the script of 'Drishyam' was so awesome, that it just didn't matter to me. Besides, I was costarring with award winning top stars Ajay Devgn and Tabu in this thriller drama Hindi movie directed by the acclaimed Nishikant Kamat. It was a God-sent oppor-
tunity, I felt, to defy my ultraglam image. And prove that I am versatile. Actually, I had seen the Malayalam original long ago and knew the potential of the hit movie" smiles the savvy Saran who denies rumours that senior co-star Tabu was “always bossing” on the sets. After a hearty chuckle she says, "Aarey nahin. That’s her screen role in ‘Drishyam’ of an aggressive headstrong IGP who is on her hellbent mission of locating her missing son. Off screen, she is so warm that she would hug me almost everyday. We have previously acted together in a Telugu movie," she shrugs.

Would love to do biopic on Madhubala: Kriti Sanon B
ollywood actress Kriti Sanon, who marked her debut with ‘’Heropanti’’, says that she admires yesteryear dive Madhubala and want to star in her biopic.
R
ight now, doubles roles are in the news, with several stars—Kangana Ranaut again after Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Salman Khan in the Kick sequel, Saif Ali Khan, Katrina Kaif and others working on films in which they are playing double roles. But the doubles plot is not new—way back in 1942, Babubhai Mistry and Nanabhai Bhatt had made a film called Muqabla produced by JBH and Homi Wadia, in which Nadia of Fearless fame played twin sisters. In those days, without the sophisticated technology available today, the directors managed to do a great job. Babubhai Mistry was a “trick photographer”—today he would be called a special effects wiz—and used ingenuity where today’s filmmakers would use computer graphics. He used split screen and Kangana Ranaut in double role in Tanu Weds Manu Returns back screen projection in the days when these scenes could not be done at the touch of a keyboard. The plot has been used so often since then, that it has become a Bollywood cliche. The villain kidnaps one of two twin girls, to punish their the two is submissive— father. He raises Rani and which is not surprising, since turns her into a dancer in his Nadia was known for her clandestine bar. In Muqabla neither of more to life than men!
DOUBLES MATCH
At a recent event, When she was asked whose life would she want to portray on screen, she said, “I would love to do a biopic on Madhubala maybe. She is somebody people remember even today. One always wants to do a biopic on somebody whose life has something worth telling about and I feel Madhubala has had a life which can actually be told. People don’t know much about her life and of course she was very pretty. I really admire her so given a chance, I would want to do a biopic on her.” Meanwhile, Kriti is busy with the shooting of Rohit Shetty’s Dilwale, which also star’s Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Varun Dhawan.
RINGSIDE VIEW
When the villain kidnaps the man who adopted her, Madhuri and Gunboat rush to rescue them. That’s when the two sisters come face to face, and Mistry worked his magic in the scene where they cross in front of a mirror. Seen today, Muqabla seems loosely scripted and overlong with too many songs and comic interludes, but imagine in 1942, how thrilling it must have been for the audience to see two Nadias in one film.
Irrfan’s spoof on party songs is in good humour, says Akshay
A
ctor Akshay Kumar says he enjoyed the spoof Irrfan Khan did on one of his songs “Party All Night” (Boss)in the All India Bakchod (AIB) video. Irrfan, known for his intense performances, recently showed his quirky side in “Every Bollywood Party Song” video for the standup comedy group AIB. In the video, Irrfan is seen explaining why he does not do party songs. Reacting to the video, Akshay said, “It was in good humour and I enjoyed the song. It was very funny. That is okay as even Irrfan was making fun of him. He did one song with me only in ‘Thank You’.” Akshay spoke about the same on the sidelines of a game launch event of film “Brothers”. The game “Brothers: Clash of Fighters” has Akshay and Siddharth Malhotra in the animation mode. “It is important to play outdoor games... I love playing outdoor games, but I do play games on my IPad. Sometimes when you are relaxing you can play games
on phone. It kind of removes your stress,” he said. “With the way technology is going ahead we will have new games... Things will change. I don’t play game for one hour... It is lot of time. I play sometimes any kind of games. I play war games, aircraft landing. I am addicted to dancing game as I can’t dance,” he said. Akshay and Siddharth play protagonists in the film “Brothers”, an action-drama based on Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). “It was exciting as I got this film to do and play a MMA fighter and I got to
learn other things. Thanks to my producer Karan Johar who helped get us lot of people from LA. I got to learn jujitsu and aikido, these are two arts that we learnt for the film and I wanted to learn in this real life,” Akshay said.
Loved the simplicity of ‘Tu kisi rail si...’: Varun Grover H
e has penned some of the most beautiful songs in Bollywood movies but Varun Grover did not want to take on the dual challenge of writing the script and the lyrics of “Masaan“. “The songs that I have written for other films have generally been received well. I was under a lot of pressure for this film. I knew that people will judge me if I wrote poor songs,” Varun said. This is why the love shown to the Benaras-based movie and its three songs — ‘Tu kisi rail si...’, ‘Mann Kasturi re...’ and ‘Bhor’ is special to the multi-talented lyricist, writer
and stand-up comedian. Varun says he was struck by the simple yet evocative metaphor of ‘rail’ in Dushyan Kumar’s ghazal ‘Tu kisi rail si’. He took the opening line and reworked the rest of the poem to suit the film’s narrative. “I wanted a song to describe the moment when a boy and a girl cross paths. I remembered Dushyant Kumar ji’s ‘Tu kisi rail si...’ and loved the simplicity of the metaphor. It is such a common metaphor and connects with everyone. The relationship in the poem seems physical and at the same it has a momentariness.”

Stuart Broad takes eight wickets as Australia suffer historic slump
N
OTTINGHAM: Stuart Broad took eight wickets as England skittled out Australia for 60 in a historically quick 111 balls on the first day of the fourth Ashes Test on Thursday. Fast-medium bowler Broad took eight for 15 in 9.3 overs as he smashed through the 300 Test wicket mark in a scintillating performance at Trent Bridge. Broad said the performance had been "unbelievable". In their reply, Joe Root scored an unbeaten century to put the hosts firmly in control. England were 237 for three with Root going strong on 103 with good support from Jonny Bairstow who had scored 64. Australia's innings was wrapped up in just 18.3 overs -- the quickest any team has ever been bowled out in the first innings of a Test -- during a stunning 94 minutes' play.

KEY FACTS FROM TRENT BRIDGE
A ustralia lasted for 111 balls (18.3 overs). It was their third shortest Test innings None of Australia's top-seven batsmen scored more than 10 runs It took Australia just 25 balls to lose their first five wickets Broad's figures of 8-15 are the best of his career Australia left-arm quick Mitchell Starc checked England's progress by taking all three wickets to fall as the hosts reached tea on 99 for three -a lead of 39 runs. Joe Root was 33 not out and Jonny Bairstow two not out in a match where an England victory would give them an unbeatable 3-1 lead in the five-match series and see them regain the Ashes. Cloudy overhead conditions offered some assistance to the bowlers and doubtless prompted Cook's decision to field first upon winning the toss. But they were not 'unplayable'.
England's Stuart Broad celebrates with teammates after taking the wicket of Australia's Michael Clarke after he was caught by Alastair Cook for 10, on the first day of the fourth Ashes Test cricket match between England and Australia at Trent Bridge ground in Nottingham, England on Thursday. Broad bowled well, maintaining an excellent line and length on his Nottinghamshire home ground. However, several of his wickets owed much to poor shots by Australia batsmen who again cemented their reputation as 'flat-track bullies' unable to cope with sideways
movement caused by the seaming ball especially. Eight Australia batsmen were caught in the cordon -- all off Broad -- and one by wicketkeeper Jos Buttler, with Peter Nevill bowled by Steven Finn. Mitchell Johnson (13) and Australia captain Michael
Brief Scores: Australia 60 all out in 18.3 overs [Stuard Broad 8/15, Mark Wood 1/13] trail England 237 for three [Joe Root 101 n.o. , J Bairstow 63 n.o., Alastair Cook 43, Mitchell Starc 3/73]
Clarke (10) were the only batsmen to make double figure scores in the innings. Australia's total -- with extras the top score on 14 -- was the lowest by either side in an Ashes innings since England were dismissed for 52 at The Oval in 1948.
Treasure trove of Indian Rahane ton lifts Indians after Kohli fails to inspire hockey’s Olympic history lost C By Chetan Narula
C
HANDIGARH: A piece of Indian hockey's golden history seems to have been lost for good courtesy the apathy of Sports Authority of India (SAI) officials, who have no clue about the priceless memorabilia donated way back in 1985 by legendary Olympian Balbir Singh Sr. The donated items, meant for a proposed museum which never came about, included an Olympic blazer, medals and rare pictures. The 91-year-old triple Olympic gold-medallist maintains that in 1985, he had donated his medals and memorabilia to the then SAI Secretary on being told that they would be displayed in a show window' at the then proposed National Sports Museum. Balbir Sr said he was later told that the Museum was to be opened in Delhi to inspire the youth of the
nation. But an enquiry about the items before the 2012 London Olympics at the request of The Olympic Museum revealed that SAI officials were clueless about their whereabouts. Nearly a year back, Union Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had visited Balbir Singh Sr at his residence in Chandigarh and SAI officials, while claiming ignorance about the entire matter, had promised a thorough enquiry. In the meanwhile, a group of lawyers from the Punjab and Haryana High Court came carried out RTI campaigns in the SAI offices of SAI in New Delhi and the National Institute of Sports (NIS), Patiala, which revealed some astonishing facts. The RTI replies of these authorities revealed shocking mismatch of statements.
OLOMBO: Middle-order batsman Ajinkya Rahane struck an unbeaten century but skipper Virat Kohli's poor form continued as Indians managed 314 for six on the opening day of their only three-day cricket tour game against Sri Lanka Board President's XI. Put into bat, Indian openers Lokesh Rahul (43) and Shikhar Dhawan (62) gave the visitors a solid 108-run start but the batting wobbled after their departure. Rohit Sharma (7) and Kohli (8) fell in quick succession as medium-pacer Kasun Rajitha (3-47) made his presence felt in the President XI ranks as Indians lost four wickets for 25 runs in the post-lunch session. Struggling at 133 for four, Rahane (109 not out) and Cheteshwar Pujara (42) then go together to stitch a 134run fifth-wicket partnership to rebuild the Indian innings. Pujara and Rahane defied the hosts until tea with the score reading 175 for four. The two batsmen put on runs at a brisk pace, bringing up the 50-
partnership in the 49th over. And then they kicked on, with Rahane bringing up his half-century off 59 balls, with five fours. Their 100-partnership came up in the 59th over and the duo scored at 4.75 per over during their 28.1-over stay together at the crease. Pujara slowed down a little as spin was introduced to make up for the slow over-rate and that hesitation cost him his wicket in the 66th over. Rahane though carried on in the same vein as the Maharashtra-born batsman got to his century with a boundary against Jeffery Vandersay (2-76). Rahane has struck 11 fours and a six in his 127-run stay so faras he helped India manage a healthy runrate of 3.97 through the day. The in-form batsman had got the company of Ravichnadran Ashwin (10 not out) at the end of the day's play as the duo managed an unbeaten 41-run partnership. Kohli decided to rest Murali Vijay, who didn't come out to bat till the end of day's play, after choosing Dhawan and Rahul as openers.
The two openers negated the fresh wicket, with Dhawan riding his luck a couple of times while Rahul was solid as if he had never been away from the national team. They started off slowly though, both looking to bat for time and brought up their 50-run partnership in the 18th over, going to lunch at 78 for no loss. After the break, the breakthroughs came quick and easy. But not before Dhawan reached his half-century off 74 balls, inclusive of six fours. The 100-mark came up in the 29th over. At 35 not out, Rahul edged the ball to second slip but the umpire wasn't sure if the catch had been taken cleanly. Hence, the batsman continued on but couldn't add to his score as he miscued a pull in the 30th over and was caught off Nisala Tharaka (1-65). It gave an opening to the Lankan side, with Sharma walking in at number three. He walked out after facing 14 deliveries, bowled by Rajitha off a yorker. The bowler then went on to toy with the Indian batting line-up, as he bowled Kohli off the fourth ball he faced, albeit it was a no ball.

he RWITC Committee elections have been moved from December to September as the Companies Act, has instructed all companies to have a March 31, year ending.
Some important facts: For the first time members can vote electronically, from 3 days prior to the AGM Day. This will take up the voting numbers by atleast 200- 300 and will have a significant bearing on the result. It is hoped this does not amount to indirect proxy voting; The Government has instructed the Club to have a code of conduct, and hence parties and gifts cannot be given by candidates or their friends and families as inducements. This is seen as a huge reform in favour of good practice. Former Chairman Vivek Jain, who though personally topping the polls, narrowly lost in his team winning last year’s election, with Gulam Vahanvaty losing by just a few votes,. This panel has announced a six member team for this year’s elections. In addition to Mr Jain, there is Milan Luthria, Geoffrey Nagpal, Zavaray Poonawalla, Gulam Vahanvaty and Champaklal Zaveri. “I am personally delighted at Milan joining our team. He is not only an ace Bollywood film director, but also has a deep knowledge of the sport, besides being a rider. His best attribute is his independent thinking and courage to stand by what is right.” Mr Jain added, “The Club is in a crisis, with losses mounting, the lease not renewed and confidence in the sport at an all time low. It will take our collective effort and supreme effort to get it back on even keel” Members feel the present team has failed to perform, not fulfilling virtually any of its pre electoral promises. The much flaunted night racing is yet to be proven on it being sustainable financially. The Club has hurtled into the biggest loss in its history. Some feel Stewarding has been abysmal, and racing has lost its lustre. No doubt it will be a close election, with a new look six taking on the present rulers who have a few “heavyweights” like veteran Shyam Ruia and flamboyant Casino owner, Jaydev Mody. However, by the feedback one gets from the rank and file, members desperately want the old team back, and as all six of Mr Jain’s team have the right credentials, it appears they do have a clear edge.

ASHINGTON: British top seed Andy Murray suffered a stunning defeat in his first hardcourt warm-up match for the US Open, losing Wednesday to Teymuraz Gabashvili at the ATP and WTA Washington Open. The 53rd-ranked Russian outlasted third-ranked Murray 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) over two hours and 42 minutes to reach the third round at the ATP and WTA Washington Open. Murray, the first Washington top seed to lose his first match since Ivan Lendl in 1993, served for the match in the third set and was two points from victory before Gabashvili broke to 5-5 and the Russian later took the final four tie-breaker points to secure the triumph. "It was a tough match," Murray said. "Obviously disappointing not to close out the third set when I had a chance. Struggled with my rhythm early. There were some good rallies. He served well in the big moments, especially in the third set." Gabashvili, who was 3-22 against prior top-10 foes, hit
30 winners and only made 15 unforced errors while winning 86 percent of firstserve points in making Murray the highest-ranked victim of his career.
ARCELONA: Lionel Messi was at the centre of a headbutting controversy on Wednesday as Barcelona cruised to a 3-0 victory over Serie A side Roma in a pre-season friendly at the Camp Nou. The Argentinian superstar, renowned for rarely losing his cool despite regularly being the target of brutal tackling, reacted angrily during a confrontation with Roma's French international Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa. Footage of the first half incident showed Messi aiming a headbutt at Yanga-Mbiwa's after the Roma defender appeared to nod his head in the direction of the diminutive South Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Roma’s Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa get involved in a scuffle during the Joan Gamper trophy soccer match between FC Barcelona and AS Roma at the Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona, Spain. Messi escaped a red card for the incident however, receiving only a caution from referee Javier Estrada Fernandez. Yanga-Mbiwa was also booked. The flashpoint represented a rare loss of cool for Messi. The Argentine has never been sent off for Barcelona and has only ever been redcarded once -- on his international debut as a teenager in 2005. Messi's anger soon subsided however as moments after the incident, he doubled Barcelona's lead, making it 20 following a superb flowing move involving Luis Suarez, Dani Alves and Neymar, who had scored Barcelona’s first goal . Ivan Rakitic made it 3-0 in the second half with a long range strike as Barcelona completed a routine win.

ANDY MURRAY
"Anytime you beat Andy Murray 7-6 in the third it's something special -- 100 percent it's my best victory," Gabashvili said. It was a shocking defeat for the 28-year-old Scotsman, who sparked Britain's Davis Cup team past France in July after a semi-final run at Wimbledon. Murray, the 2012 US Open and 2013 Wimbledon champion, has much work on his hands.

yderabad: Top women's doubles shuttler Jwala Gutta welcomed the appointment of reputed doubles coach Kim Tan Her but said the Malaysian should be the sole decision maker and there should not be any interference from anybody. "It's (appointment of doubles coach) a good thing for Indian badminton. But, I only wish that he should be the sole decision maker. Nobody else should interfere with his decisions for doubles. If that happens, that will be good for doubles in the country," Jwala told PTI.
"I think it's a huge boost for us as doubles players. It's going to be really helpful. We are looking forward to it," Ashwini said. Four years ago, 2010 Commonwealth Games champions Jwala and Ashwini had broken a 28-year-old medal drought for India by winning the bronze at the World Championship in London and the celebrated pair is now gearing up for the prestigious event at Indonesia, where they Jwala's partner Ashwini will enter as seeded pairs. The 2011 Glasgow Commonwealth Games silver medallists received a boost ahead of the World Championship after they clinched the Canada Open Grand Prix in June. Jwala, who trains with Dronacharya awardee S M Arif here, said their preparation for the upcoming event has been good. "It's been good. I went to Bangalore to train with Ashwini for a few days. We have had a couple of good sessions. Ashwini and me, we are feeling really good, top of our game. Just looking forward to it," Jwala said.
