He was awarded the Literature degree in April 2013, though he was not allowed personally to recieve the certificate due to security reasons. "Later, it was handed over to him in his cell," Dr Shiva Swaroop, Regional Director of IGNOU, which conducts PG courses in Central Prison, told PTI. Yakub passed his MA Political Science too in December 2014 but the degree has not been conferred upon him so far. "He may not live to get the MA Political Science degree (as per IGNOU records, Yakub's birth date

is July 30, 1962)," Dr Swaroop said. Recalling Yakub as a student, he said, "He (Yakub) showed keen interest in both the subjects and was very quiet. We provided books on the subject and shared inputs with him." "I see all students but our principle is to stick to our business of teaching and providing counselling and not beyond that. We have idea of their criminal background but we never mix our teaching with it," he said. Two policemen depose in journalist J Dey murder trial T

wo witnesses -- police officers -- today deposed before the special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court here in journalist J Dey murder case. "One of them was the policeman who had reached the (murder) spot first after receiving information while the other was the one who had registered the FIR," said defence lawyer S M Deshpande. The cross-examination of the second witness was yet to be conducted, said Deshpande. The court had framed charges against 11 accused in the case, including the journalist Jigna Vora, on June 8. Dey was shot dead in suburban Powai on June 11, 2011, allegedly

at the behest of fugitive gangster Chhota Rajan. Police had on December, 2011 filed a charge sheet against the arrested accused Satish Kaliya, Abhijeet Shinde, Arun Dake, Sachin Gaikwad, Anil Waghmode, Nilesh Shendge, Mangesh Agawane, Vinod Asrani, Paulson Joseph and Deepak Sisodia. Later, a separate charge sheet was filed against Vora. According to police, Rajan was annoyed by two articles written by Dey which showed him in bad light and ordered the veteran crime reporter's killing. Vora had allegedly instigated the underworld don because of her own professional rivalry with Dey, the charge sheet says.

HC directs ED, ACB to continue investigation against Bhujbal T

he Bombay High Court today directed the state Anti-Corruption Bureau and Enforcement Directorate to continue its inquiry against former minister Chhagan Bhujbal and his family members for alleged money laundering and land grabbing. The direction was passed by a division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice A K Menon despite the two investigating agencies informing the court that they have closed inquiries against Bhujbal into five allegations out of total nine, due to lack of evidence. The court after perusing the re-

ports submitted by ACB and ED pointed out that there is scope for further inquiry. The court has granted time to ACB till October 31 and to ED till December 31 to complete their probe. Senior counsel Shrihari Aane, appearing for Bhujbal, raised an objection to this and said the court cannot pass such a direction when the agencies have already given closure on five allegations. Out of the nine allegations, FIRs have been filed by the ACB on two allegations regarding the Maharashtra Sadan scam and Kalina land grabbing case.

World’s first bionic eye implant

In a world-first, a bionic eye has been implanted to restore central vision in an 80-year-old British man suffering from advanced dry age related macular degeneration (AMD). Professor Paulo Stanga at the University of Manchester led the four hour operation on pensioner Ray Flynn at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. Flynn has age related macular degeneration, the most common cause of sight loss in the developed world. The condition is not painful but it means that central vision is impaired resulting in people being unable to read or drive and having difficulty recognising faces. The condition left Flynn unable to watch his beloved Manchester United on television or do gardening. Flynn was fitted with the device, which converts video images from a miniature camera installed in his glasses, in June and it was activated on July 1. The Argus II implant, manufactured by the US firm Second Sight, has already been used to restore some vision to patients who are blind due to a rare condition known as retinitis pigmentosa. The operation is the first time it has been implanted in

a patient with AMD. Stanga said he was delighted with the results. "Mr Flynn's progress is truly remarkable. He is seeing the outline of people and objects very effectively," said Stanga. "The dry form of AMD is a common, but untreatable condition. In the western world, it is the leading cause of sight loss," he said. The technology works by turning the images captured by the camera into small electrical pulses. These are transmitted wirelessly to electrodes on the retina surface where they stimulate the remaining cells and replicate the patterns of light for the brain. Over time Flynn will learn to interpret these patterns and regain vision. "This technology is revolutionary and changes patients' lives - restoring some functional vision and helping them to live more independently," said Stanga, who works in the University's Institute of Human Development as Professor of Opthalmology & Retinal Regeneration. "As far as I am concerned, the first results of the trial are a total success, and I look forward to treating more dry AMD patients," he said.

Japan zoo takes on cockroach PR role

A Japanese zoo is trying to do the impossible -- improve the image of cockroaches, putting on an exhibition of one of the world's most hated insects. With a whopping -- and disgusting -- 4,000 species around the planet, the hardy creature can survive almost anywhere, but is most commonly encountered by city-dwellers in grubby corners of the kitchen, or roaming around the floor at night. Staff at Shunanshi Tokuyama Zoo in Yamaguchi, western Japan, say the cockroach gets a bad press, and actually performs a vital job. "They have such a negative image," a zoo spokeswoman told AFP. "But they're actually playing an important role in the food chain." Important, but not very pleasant-sounding: eating rotting carcasses and dead plants on forest floors. One highlight of the exhibition will be a five-way race among cockroaches, where visitors can watch the worryingly speedy bugs whizz down a track. If that's not entertainment enough -- hard to credit -- the zoo is offering the chance to get your hands on a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach, which can grow as long as 7 centimetres (two-and-a-half inches).

No need to worry about this, though, assures the zoo -- Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches can't fly. But

they can hiss. The exhibition has around 200 creatures from a total of 15 species on display, and is

already proving popular, the spokeswoman said, adding 70 to 80 per cent of visitors are stopping by.

Fragments of world’s oldest Quran found Researchers at the Birmingham university in UK have discovered that fragments of a Quran manuscript in the varsity library are among the oldest in the world, dating back at least 1,370 years, close to the time of Prophet Muhammad. Radiocarbon analysis has placed the parchment on which the text is written to the period between AD 568 and 645 with 95.4 per cent accuracy. The test, which was carried out in a laboratory at the University of Oxford, places the parchment close to the time of Prophet Muhammad, who is generally thought to have lived between AD 570 and 632. Consisting of two parchment leaves, the Quran manuscript contains parts of Suras (chapters) 18 to 20, written with ink in an early form of Arabic script known as Hijazi. The Quran manuscript is part of the University's Mingana Collection of Middle Eastern manuscripts, held in the Cadbury Research Library. For many years, the manuscript had been

misbound with leaves of a similar Quran manuscript, which is datable to the late seventh century. "The radiocarbon dating has delivered an exciting result, which contributes significantly to our understanding of the earliest written copies of the Quran," said Susan Worrall, Director of Special Collections (Cadbury Research Library). Dr Alba Fedeli, who studied the leaves as part of her PhD research, said: "The two leaves, which were radiocarbon dated to the early part of the seventh century, come from the same codex as a manuscript kept in the Bibliotheque Nationale de France in Paris." "According to Muslim tradition, the Prophet Muhammad received the revelations that form the Quran, the scripture of Islam, between the years AD 610 and 632, the year of his death," said Professor David Thomas, Professor of Christianity and Islam and Nadir Dinshaw Professor of Interreligious Relations at the University of

Birmingham. "At this time, the divine message was not compiled into the book form in which it appears today. Instead, the revelations were preserved in 'the memories of men'. Parts of it had also been written down on parchment, stone, palm leaves and the shoulder blades of camels," he said. "The tests carried out on the parchment of the Birmingham folios yield the strong probability that the animal from which it was taken was alive during the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad or shortly afterwards," Thomas said. "This means that the parts of the Quran that are written on this parchment can, with a degree of confidence, be dated to less than two decades after Muhammad's death. "These portions must have been in a form that is very close to the form of the Quran read today, supporting the view that the text has undergone little or no alteration and that it can be dated to a point very close to the time it was believed to be revealed," Thomas said.

he state government has finally swung into action and decided to recommend names of the four fire officials who lost their lives in the Kalbadevi fire incident in May this year for bravery award. This recommendation will be sent to President Pranab Mukherjee. Minister of State for Home Ranjit Patil made this announcement in the Legislative Council yesterday while replying to the calling attention motion moved by Sunil Tatkare of NCP. Kapil Patil of Lok Bharti supported the motion and asked if the government will give the status of martyrs to the slain fire officials, who died at work in the massive blaze that broke out in Kalbadevi on May 9. On this query Patil said,

Deshmukh took over as the Mumbai University’s VC earlier this month after the tenure of Dr Rajan Welukar ended. Later, speaking to ADC, MNS senate member Sudhakar Tamboli said, “The meeting was casual and non-political; they talked of ways and means to improve the quality of the varsity and develop education for students.” Sushil Kadam | ADC

BIR THDAY BOY: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra is all smiles as his followers and well wishers turned up on Wednesday with roses and bouquets to greet him on his birthday.

“A martyr status can be accorded to only those who sacrifice their lives on the border. But we will recommend the names of all the four fire officials who lost their lives in the incident to the President for a Shaurya Padak (bravery award)”. To another question raised by Kiran Pawaskar of NCP, Patil said, “The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will take responsibility of bearing education expenses of children of the slain officials. The government will also consider giving homes to the families of the officers, under Chief Minister's quota. Currently, the fire department has the capacity to fight fire at height of 70 metres. The BMC is in the process of acquiring 90 metre tall ladders so that fire at a greater height can be doused”.

mand to write-off farmers' loans. “Farmers should not be shooed away like beggars standing at one's doorstep. The government has come to power with the blessings of these farmers. They are the kings. Let their curse not ruin everything. The question is if waiving off loans will not stop farmers' suicides, what will?”. “It is being said that the CM is firm on not waiving off the loans of farmers. If he is firm on his stand, he should also clarify on how does the government plan to revive the lives of farmers who are in broken state. The CM wants farmers to stand on their feet. This decision of his is good. But how will you make those farmers stand on their feet who have already been crippled and are standing with the help of crutches,” the editorial added further. The unseasonal rains in some parts of the state and lack of showers in other parts destroys the crops of farmers, thereby causing losses. The banks and money lenders then pressurise

C

ontroversy surrounding the open air gym at the Marine Drive promenade inaugurated last week by Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray refuses to die down, with Swabhiman Sangathana, an NGO led by Congress MLA Nitesh Rane, yesterday opening a vadapav stall near the fitness station. Rane had reportedly threatened to put up this stall next to the gym in protest against the permission given to it. The food stall, which opened in the morning, started serving vadapav and kombadi-vade, a non-veg delicacy from the Konkan region of Maharashtra and a number of customers were seen buying the eatables throughout the day. The sign-board on the handcart that sells the food items, reads 'Swabhiman Vada ani Kombdi Vade' and also carries a line, which calls it an initiative solely for the Marathi people. The open air fitness station installed by actor Dino Morea on the Marine Drive last Wednesday, was inaugurated by Aaditya Thackeray and actor Jacqueline Fernandes.

However, the next day Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) workers had reportedly dismantled it saying it was illegal. But, they put it back together on learning that permissions were in order. Rane had jumped into the controversy stating that his NGO would start a vada-pav stall near the gym. Mumbai NCP had also said it would set up self-help group stalls on the famed promenade if the gymnasium was not removed. Congress had alleged although it had sought permission for the installation of a similar fitness station in 2013, the then municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte had denied it stating that no temporary or permanent structure could be erected on the promenade. The vada pav stall put up by Rane yesterday was later in the day towed away by the BMC and Mumbai Police officials. Despite repeated attempts, Swabhiman Sanghatana officebearers as well as BMC officials could not be contacted over the development.

First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against the senior vice president of city's top five star Grand Hyatt Hotel in Santacruz for doing illegal construction inside the lobby. The action was taken on the complaint filed by Congress Corporator Brian Miranda in the BMC H/East ward around two years back. The Vakola Police has lodged a FIR after the complaint hads been filed by Abhijit Sawai, an Assistant Engineer (A/E) at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (H East Ward). According to the police, the BMC (H East Ward) officials had visited the hotel two years ago for the same issue after they received a complaint from Miranda. The BMC had given a notice to the hotel, for illegal constructions in the hotel lobby. According to the police, a corporator of 84 ward of BMC had complained about the issue on April 23 in 2013, and so the H East ward officials had visited the hotel on May 4 in 2013. Later after finding irregularities, the H East ward had

sent a notice about the issue. According to an official from the H East Ward, the hotel did not correct their mistakes and therefore this step was taken. Hotel officials feel that there is a political conspiracy behind this move. “There are many hotels in the city who are busy doing irregularities. We have not done it outside the hotel. It has been done in the basement. This move is politically motivated. It is being done to tarnish the hotel’s image,” said an official from the hotel. “An FIR has been registered under section 53/7 of MRTP

act. No one has been arrested till yet, the investigation is in process,” said Vakola senior police inspector Mahadev Valve. Congress Corporator Brian Miranda said, “BMC had taken around two years to take action against hotel authority, they demolished the structure long back and later hotel management wanted to regularize that structure but that was rejected because this structure was not in their 1991 plan, there str many illegal structure in Vakola area but why BMC is showing laziness to take the action.”

Mira Bhayandar in race to bag ‘Smart City’ tag lution to this effect was passed in the general body meet on Wednesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched AMRUT and Smart City Mission on 25th June. While 100 Smart Cities will be selected through a competition among cities across the nation (10 from Maharashtra), 500 cities are to be identified under

AMRUT. A city that bags the Smart City tag will get Rs 100 crore assistance from the Centre. Aimed at enhancing quality of urban life and to provide clean and sustainable environment to the residents, the mission envisages adequate and clean water supply, sanitation and solid waste management, E-governance, efficient urban

mobility and public transportation, housing for poor and strong IT connectivity. Based on the Centre's grading system, the MBMC has submitted its application along with the scorecard to the state government authorities which will rate the potential smart cities on the basis of model conditions

and scoring criteria in the first stage. The highest scoring cities will be shortlisted and recommended for participation in the second stage, which will be held at the Central level. Once this is accomplished, the qualifiers will have to come up with smart solutions in an interstate challenger.

missioner of Police (Preventive), Mumbai. Its office is located in the compound of the office of Commissioner of Police, Brihan Mumbai. However as of now there is no complaint lodging process included on the website but does dwell on the procedures to avoid falling victim to the new age crime and contacting for complaints. While civic chief Achyut Hange is optimistic that MBMC will be selected as it fulfilled most of the criteria, Mayor Geeta Jain stressed on the need to embrace public participation in developing Mira-Bhayandar as a smart city. As per guidelines, the civic body should be capable to raise its own funds to the tune of 50 crore for next five years and spend 200 crore every year to participate in the challenger round.

Cancer patients on footpath outside hospital By Vrushali Purandare

f you take a walk along the bylanes of Parel, near Tata, Wadia or K.E.M. hospitals, you will be shocked to see the miserable condition of poor people suffering from cancer who are literally living on the footpaths, covering themselves with plastic sheets, for more than a month because there is no place for them to stay in the hospital and they cannot afford to stay on rental basis or go to a dharamshala. There are more than 25 people staying on the footpath, who are being treated in Tata hospital for cancer. Many cancer patients cannot afford the treatment cost as well. bathing and toilet needs? But I manage somehow. I am suffering from breast cancer, I don’t have enough money to stay in a hotel or guest house, lamented Anjali Choudhary from Silinguri, West Bengal, wiping the tears which were flowing down her cheeks. Another patient, Bijendra Singh Rana said he is suffering from cancer in the neck and has been living on the footpath since April and added that his suffering gets worse during heavy rains. Says he, “Since I am patient I can't walk, what should I do? If I get wet in the rain there are chances of getting infection because my immune system is low. Several times I have been kept waiting in Tata hospital, and my pain increases when the treatment is postponed. Speaking on this issue S.H. Jafri, senior PRO at Tata hospital said, “Tata hospital has understood the magnitude of poor patients, so we have already taken three buildings of B.P.T. and St.Jude buildings to

provide free accommodation to children and females. Work is in progress in all these buildings. The MMRDA and MP Rahul Shewale are also helping us. A NGO, Sraddha is also making some arrangements for elderly patients. We are also enhancing the accommodation at Bandra Borges Memorial for 100-200 people, we are also coming up with a 13storey building. The patients who are living on the footpaths are encouraged by donors who come there, distribute food to them which actually harms the patients as it leads to complications. Instead, the donors should provide them shelter. Every year six lakh people are diagnosed with cancer, but unfortunately there are not enough cancer specialists for this huge numbers. Most of the people from rural areas die of cancer without ny diagnosis or treatment. Many cancer patients come to Mumbai to get treated and for them the only hope hope of survival is the Tata hospital.

Police are now trying to find out about the nexus under which he used to operate, and are attempting to ascertain whether he was only a seller, or whether he was working with some drug lords. An informer from Dhobhi Ghat in Vakola used to habitually witness the arrested accused Narhari Babaji Krishaji being regularly visited by many college students. The people in the area were stumped as to why the students us to constantly accost him, and wondered as to why the students did so. The informer then contacted the Vakola police and informed them, about the unusual visits of the college students to the accused house. Police then laid a trap and caught him red handed. When he was brought to the police station, he confessed to his crime. While sources from the

police revealed that, there were few college student who used to purchase drugs from Narhari at cheap rates, and the students in turn became pushers themselves supplying to to other college students at higher rates. Beware, bogus babas: Black Magic cops are out to get you Continued from pg 1 ÂŤ sections of the act,â€? said DCP Enforcement Pravin Patil. However, the 'Black Magic Prevention Unit will be trained to gain intelligence of such humans who in the name of getting betterment to people already suffering from problems cheat and later flee. The team will keep a tab on areas where such incidents have been occurred in the past. The training of the officers will include field and documentation research and case studies. The identification between the difference of genuine cases and religious processions will too be a part of the training. According to The Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, 2013. The act does not apply to the religious practices. However the act do apply to black magic practices. “We will try to enroll activists those have been fighting against the practices dangerous to human lives and wealth. We too appeal to the people of the city to not get cheated by baba's and trantiks who keep innocent people in dark and later flee

after cheating them with monetary sums, Patil further added. The training will soon be started. However, the process of gathering necessary materials and equipments have already being done. Mumbai police's all 93 police stations crime police inspectors will too be enrolled in for better coordination, once the Black Magic Prevention Unit is all set operate. “As per reports the cases in Mumbai, as compared to the rural areas, are less but the cases could be linked to the one's in rural areas or Mumbai as the baba's and tantriks mostly do not operate in high profile areas. They keep their identity low. There has been cases where the victims have been hypnotized and later sexually assaulted. In a few cases a family member first comes in contact with the accused and later other family members too fall prey to the babas. We need to spread awareness among the people to avoid being cheated with such dupers, said an officer. “We are keeping a tab on the social networking sites, public transports such as trains, buses and other modes to educate people, concluded the officer.

Seeking charity for Hospital, MBMC Plans 40 Lakh Junket for Netas !

t a time when the cash starved Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) is desperately seeking donations to start its hospital, elected representatives cutting across party lines have yet again teamed up to venture on a junket under the guise of a study tour. Although the exact date, destination and itinerary is yet to be officially announced, the all-party five day tour consisting of a bunch of senior officers and their subordi-

general body meeting. It is interesting to note that the ruling and opposition members fiercely fight each other on trivial matters, however when it comes to splurging money on junkets, there is never a difference of opinion among them. Apart from the standing committee, other committees including the Tree Authority and the Transport body have been to places like Kashimir, Bangalore, Kulu Manali, Chandigarh, Goa and even Nepal in the recent past. At the end of the tour, the members are supposed to give a presentation of the information and knowledge gained from the trip. However, past experience of similar tours has brought out hardly anything worthwhile by way of learning. Participants take the

nates are expected to take off in the first week of August. At present there are 96 corporators (including four nominated) in the MBMC house. An additional budgetary allocation of Rs 30 lakh to the existing Rs 10 lakh was approved in the recently held

opportunity for holidaying using the tax payers' hard earned money. However, a section of elected representatives and bureaucrats feel that such tours are important for them, as it helps in widening their vision.

The respondents in the case were jeep owner Bharat Bhagwan Patil, autorickshaw owner Ankush Bendu Gaikar, Oriental Insurance Company, (insurer of autorickshaw) and

New India Assurance Company Ltd (the jeep's insurer). Respondent's counsel K V Poojari said that the jeep's insurance was not valid at the time of the accident and hence, New India Assurance was not liable to pay the compensation. Ponder awhile… “Whosoever desires constant success must change his conduct with the times.” — Niccolo Machiavelli

Fight over Delhi police control ow can a government be involved H in a continuing fight with the police force in the state? The chief minister must have a good working relationship with the police. In Delhi, the state police and the AAP government are engaged in a fight with each other. The police chief says he is not under the state government and he does not have to carry out its orders. He says his boss is the home minister at the centre. He is not obliged to take orders from the state government. Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal is quite upset about it all. He says it is odd that the police is not under a democratically elected government. The police, he points out, are also acting against government ministers. Recently a girl was stabbed to death and there is a strong opinion that if the police were alert, this death need not have occurred. The CM is totally dissatisfied with the way the Delhi police are handling the law and order situation. The police commissioner has consulted the governor and he is carrying out work as per the order given by him. He has no objection to working under the state government but he cannot do so because the existing rules require him to function under the centre. There is not likely to be any change in the situation. The centre is not likely to give up its hold over the police. It wants total control over them. So long as the Congress was in power — with Sheila Dikshit as the chief minister, there was no problem. The situation has changed with another party in power: the centre is not likely to give up control over Delhi police.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JULY 23, 2015

W

HILE writing this column, Mumbai is drenched with most sought after and eagerly awaited rains and the mercury is dipping, in Delhi the monsoon session of the Parliament has begun with a lot of heat in the political corridors across partylines. Blades are being sharpened and cannon ready to fire for the entire session. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi Government that always maintained an aggressive stance on the front foot, has for the first time gone on the back foot to negotiate the volley of aggressive pacy swingers from the united opposition. If the mood of the opposition parties, led by the Congress continues, there is very little hope that any meaningful agenda will be transacted during the current monsoon session. If you peep into the recent pages of history, a similar situation was witnessed for a year before the change of guard took place at the centre. The only difference is that it was the BJP led opposition that had put the Manmohan Singh Government on charges of corruption and other demands. The situation has taken a U-turn now and we see the Modi government in a vulnerable situation.

and Akali Dal oppose certain provisions in the controversial bills, the Government is confident of sailing through in the Lok Sabha. However, that does not save the grace of the Government because the BJP and its allies are in a hopeless minority in the Rajya Sabha. While the Congress with a huge strength has decided to oppose passing of the GST and the Land Acquisition Bills, many other regional parties like Samajwadi Party of Mulayam Singh, Trinamool Congress of Mamata Bannerji and Biju Janata Dal of Navin Patnaik are also likely to join the ranks. This makes it amply clear that in any case, the Land Acquisition Bill cannot be cleared in the Rajya Sabha. The Congress and the Samajwadi Party have made it clear that they shall

A planned strategy to corner BJP If the media reports and gossips in the Central Hall are any indication, the opposition has decided to go for focused attack. On one hand the Congress has a planned strategy to corner External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje for their alleged connection with the tainted cricket tycoon former IPL boss Lalit Modi, while on the other, the opposition would vehemently oppose the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill and the proposed Land Acquisition Bill to convert the threetime promulgated ordinance in this connection. The position of the Modi government has further weakened due to the exposition of 'Vyapam' scandal in Madhya Pradesh involving State Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. If all these activities find place on the floors of the two Houses, surely no bill can be discussed or passed during the proposed four-week session and it would be a clean wash-out. Yes, going by the numerical strength in the Lok Sabha, there is no threat to the existence of the Modi Government as it is sitting pretty with an absolute majority on the own strength of the BJP alone. Therefore, even if some other alliance partners like Shiv Sena

THINKING ALOUD Bharatkumar Raut not accept anything less than withdrawal of the Bill and thus, allow the Ordinance to die after its three revivals. That would be an awkward situation for the Modi Government. In any case, it has gone into the history books by promulgating same ordinance thrice in continuation as it failed to pass it in the Parliamentary floor test. The Bill that was presented to the Rajya Sabha is now pending with a Joint Parliamentary Committee for scrutiny. The report of the Committee is expected to be tabled in Parliament next week. That would enable the Government to take further action. As per the Parliamentary norms and practices, the Government is free to accept the recommendations partially or fully or to reject them totally. However, the fact that Modi has once again reiterated his determination to bring in the bill with same provisions, make the exercise of the Joint Select Committee redundant.

People’s House for a ride?

The question is how long political issues should take the People's House for a ride? If every minute of the Parliament proceeding costs more than lakh rupees, is it right to allow valuable hours of the Parliament go waste to prove political points? If the Rajya Sabha rejects the Land Acquisition or GST Bills on the strength of number of seats or principles, one can justify their act, but what about not allowing the House to function to press the demand of ministers' resignation? Is it justified? If the Government does not bow to the demands of the opposition or succumb to their pressure, the Opposition has every right to disrupt the proceedings for a day or two to make their point. Thereafter however, not in the corridors of the Parliament House but the streets outside, is the venue to raise the voice. That has always proved to be more impactful than a mere noise on the floors of the Parliament. Senior Social leader Anna Hazare had no voice in the Parliament. But he raised his voice on Ramlila maidan and the entire nation rallied behind him. The force of his agitation was such that the Parliament was forced to take immediate cognizance and pass unanimous resolution to concede Anna's demands. He could do this only on his own moral strength and without support from any political outfit. If a 75-year old half-educated ex-serviceman with rural background could manifest this wonder, why political leaders with huge organized following of people, media and wealth, can not muster support of the masses to press for their demands to remove corrupt ministers and to withdraw the bills which they want to be passed? If the chaos in the Parliament continues further without any hope of respite, the main fear is that the people at large would start losing interest, faith and confidence in the multi-party parliamentary democratic exercise in India. When masses lose their confidence in the set-up, it amounts to invitation to anger, protests, agitations, violence and in turn anarchy. Do our law-makers intend to bring in lawlessness? What an 'Aam Adami' in the country wishes is a harmonious political atmosphere where the rulers and the opposition think and work for the welfare of the last man of the society. Law-makers, are you listening? Twitter: @BharatkumarRaut

The mysticism of sound T

HE Life Absolute from which has sprung all that is felt, seen, and perceived, and into which all again merges in time, is a silent, motionless and eternal life which among the Sufis is called Zat. Every motion that springs forth from this silent life is a vibration and a creator of vibrations. Within one vibration are created many vibrations; as motion causes motion so the silent life becomes active in a certain part, and creates every moment more and more activity, losing thereby the peace of the original silent life. It is the grade of activity of these vibrations that accounts for the various planes of existence. These planes are imagined to differ from one another. The activity of vibrations makes them grosser, and thus the earth is born of the heavens. The mineral, vegetable, animal and human kingdoms are the gradual changes of vibrations, and the vibrations of each plane differ from one another in their weight, breadth, length, color, effect, sound and rhythm. Man is not only formed of vibrations, but he lives and moves in them; they surround him as the fish is surrounded by water, and he contains them within him as the tank contains water. His different moods, inclinations, affairs, suc-

cesses and failures, and all conditions of life depend upon a certain activity of vibrations, whether these be thoughts, emotions or feelings. It is the direction of the activity of vibrations that accounts for the variety of things and beings. This vibratory activity is the basis of sensation and the source of all pleasure and pain; its cessation is the opposite of sensation. All sensations are caused by a certain grade of activity of vibration. There are two aspects of vibrations, fine and gross, both containing varied degrees;

Creation begins with the activity of consciousness, which may be called vibration, and every vibration starting from its original source is the same, differing only in its tone and rhythm caused by a greater or lesser degree of force behind it. On the plane of sound, vibration causes diversity of tone, and in the world of atoms, diversity of color. It is by massing together that the vibrations become audible, but at each step towards the surface they multiply, and as they advance they materialize. Sound gives to the consciousness as evidence of its existence, although it is in fact the active part of consciousness an evidence of its existence, although it is in fact the active some are perceived by the soul, some by the part of consciousness itself which turns into mind, and some by the eyes. Mumbai airport

ONE day rain in Mumbai caused lots of delay for air travellers. Long queue of flights were seen waiting to take off and it looked like an auto stand and not as Mumbai airport. Overflowing of Mithi river near the airport caused puddle of water in the runaway that triggered inordinate delay for take off and landing. We saw near misses and hits in recent times. The radar failure in Mumbai, which caused flights hovering around the Mumbai Airport and some others were diverted as well. Why this chaos in the air and in the airport tarmac. With monsoon season hitting all over the city we can come across many more cancellation and delays. Passengers are put into discomfiture and the chaos caused total confusion and overcrowding in the Airport. Parking problem has caused chaos in the Mumbai Airport for some time now. He not only reached out to the opposition parties at a meeting called by Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister in the morning, but also found himself wooing his NDA allies in the evening, on the eve of what promises to be a very tough monsoon session of Parliament. But even though Modi and his colleagues reached out to the opposition, they made it clear that there would be no resignations and that they were in no mood to accede to any ultimatums. Modi managed to get the backing of the allies on the various controversies surrounding BJP leaders but on the contentious Land Bill he extracted cooperation after assuring them that the government would not go ahead without discussion with them. The allies were also promised that there would be more frequent meetings. The NDA meeting held at PMs residence was the last in the series of meetings the government has convened to ensure smooth functioning of Parliament.

when it reiterated its fondness for the K-word, which, it discovered the morning after, had not found mention in the Ufa statement. Its petulance was more than evident when it refused to accommodate

India's request to get voice samples of the Mumbai terror-accused. As if acting on cue, the border situation deteriorated almost instantly. Tempers flared with India's show of its promised "effective and forceful" response. Not surprisingly, Pakistan's rangers on the borders refused the sweets offered by Indian soldiers on Eid. Then, there was the sighting and shooting down of an unclaimed drone that somehow strayed into Pakistan territory from India. Has Murphy's law caught up with India-Pakistan ties again? From all indications, it has, but that is not something either India's ministry of external affairs or the prime minister's office may be expected to own up to. India's foreign secretary is trying hard to dispel notions of Ufa not being a success. Whatever the talks-schedule, the Narendra Modi government seems to be struggling to pass off Ufa as a stunning diplomatic initiative. — Bhagwan Thadani, Mumbai

SAUMYA TANDON SHINES IN HER ACT IN

TELEVISION

By Sandeep Hattangadi

Saumya, what was your first impression of your dashing costar Aasif Sheikh? Well, Aasifji is a seasoned actor — and he’s going to kill me for saying this, but I’ve seen his work since the time I was small (laughs). He has done comedy for years and he is good at it. Also, some of my friends who’d worked with him earlier told me he’s a very good person. So when I met him for the first time, I was at ease. I did wonder if, like many established actors, he would be rigid about certain things. But I was happy to find that he is very easy to work with.

Saumya Tandon plays a former beauty queen who is quite the go-getter in the hilarious sitcom ‘Bhabhiji Ghar Par Hai’. Saumya, who has anchored quite a few prominent shows spoke to ADC popular show in a freewheeling chat

What do you think works for both of you as an onscreen couple? I think Anita and Vibhuti’s relationship is like a breath of fresh air on Indian TV. It’s not a clichéd relationship that you see in all the soaps, where the wife is the ‘Sati Savitri’ and the husband is the typical chauvinist. The chemistry that we depict hasn’t been explored before, and that’s why people find it amusing and refreshing. Which scene would you say has been your favorite? I loved the first time Anita makes Vibhuti dress up as ‘Deepu Mastana’, the domestic help, and romances him. I love the scenes where she very sweetly, politely and lovingly entraps Vibhuti in his own game, gets him to do all the work. What do you like most about Aasif? Aasifji is a spontaneous and intelligent actor and I like thinking actors because I am

eteran Bollywood actor Anupam Kher reveals that he has been trying his best to get PM Narendra Modi on his popular TV candid chat show ‘Kucch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai’, whose second season will commence from August 2 on the Colors channel helmed by Raj Nayak. Explains the glib Kher, “Even I am equally enthused about conversing with Modi-saab on my TV show. But it all depends on when he will be able to spare time from his hectic schedule.” Continues the ‘Shaukeens’ actor, “For that matter, even my M.P. wife Kirron Kher was on my wish list. But she is committed to her parliament sessions and was unable to attend our shoots,” he shrugs. Among the luminaries whom he interviewed this time whom was he in ‘awe’ of ? “Most of the showbiz celebs were ones with whom I already had a rapport as a co-star. Okay, any trait about your co-star that annoys you? Nothing really. Just that he keeps teasing me about me being the bold, brazen 'bhabhi' I portray in the show! Tell us something fans don’t know about your co-star. He gets really jittery doing naughty scenes and keeps joking that his wife and children watch the show, what they will think about him!

Back to the ’90s! Afternoon Despatch & Courier

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JULY 23, 2015

Think Alicia Silverstone’s flannels in the film Clueless, the Spice Girls in body glitter and platform shoes on stage, or the still trendy jelly sandals. The ’90s may have had some questionable trends, but we’re still holding on to a few of our favourites! Rhea Dhanbhoora & Yamini Walia tell you what you can get away with today

N

o, we’re not talking about the cone bra, the sharp bangs (although if you can rock those, kudos to you!), the shirt-skirtlegwarmer combination (shudder!) or the fuzzy sweaters. The ’90s, the most recent addition to the world of nostalgic fashion and culture, have been coming up often lately. There’s a revival of the music and the style, and there’s a flurry of posts dedicated to games that no longer exist… and we’re on board with all of it! From iconic films such as Clueless and Empire Records that sucked us into the world of fashionable leg warmers and plaid skirts, to girl bands who really showed us how to rock pigtails and platform shoes, who wouldn’t want to go back in time? Whether you are a fan or a detractor of the trends, we’re sure you can still rock at least some of these, all of which have stood the test of time!

BLoWn oUT HAir Could you get through the ’90s without a blow out? Designer Akassh Agarwal of the label Subhashni, says, “The ‘90s were all about big puffy skirts, big puffy sleeves and big puffy hair!” If you’re looking to mimic something close to that look, here are a few tips to rock that trend. l After a shower, blot strands with a towel, spritz a volumniser, and start blow-drying. l Section off the bottom layer of your hair into 1½-inch pieces and position a medium-sized round brush under the roots of one of the segments. l Roll it as you blow-dry, but stop right at the tips; tilt the brush so that it’s vertical. l Give it a twist so that your hair stays wrapped around it. Aim the dryer nozzle at it for a while and let the strands cool.

aking good food choices in a fast-paced city can be difficult, especially since most of us don’t even have the time to prepare our own meals. With this setback in mind, Kumud Dadlani and Arina Suchde decided to introduce the Slow Food Movement in Mumbai. The international concept began in Rome and has spread to various countries across the world. It involves making good food choices and promotes clean, locally produced food. If you think that this is impossible in a city like ours where people love indulging in vada pavs and pav bhajis, read on to find exactly how you can make better food choices. n What is the Mumbai chapter of the

Slow Food Movement about? As a city, Mumbai is a melting pot of communities. We want to incorporate the city’s personality into the activities for Slow Food. We will organise activities to educate consumers about the value of local food and producers through tasting workshops, farm visits, school gardens, documentary screenings, community meals and farmers markets that encourage producer-to-consumer interactions. The Slow Food Mumbai Earth Market will be a farmer-driven chapter, consisting of numerous taste education workshops.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JULY 23, 2015

SLOW & STEADY Kumud Dadlani & Arina Suchde are the proprietors of the Slow Food Movement in Mumbai. Sara Shah spoke to them to find out more about the interesting concept

n What are the ideal steps that one needs

to take in order to make better food choices? You need to be as informed as possible. Speak to your vegetable vendor to find out what produce is seasonal. If you don’t know how to prepare a vegetable, look at how native communities prepare it. They posses traditional knowledge, which must not be lost. Consume imported fruits, vegetables and food products on a smaller scale and focus on produce that is grown here including millets, rice and grains. n Could you suggest a few good places

that the people in Mumbai could visit to source this food from? Navdanya Shop, Conscious Food, The Farmer’s Market, Down to Earth and Vrindavan Farm are some ventures that are helping to spread the concept of good, clean and fair food. n Does this movement have anything to

do with organic food? There was a time when all the food in India was organic. Now, when the term organic is used, you can’t be sure if it’s a marketing gimmick or if it’s genuine. Our main aim is to use natural farming methods as much as possible, just like we used to. Our main philosophy is Good, Clean & Fair. Good: For Slow Food, the idea of good food means enjoying delicious food made with care from healthy plants and animals. The pleasures of good food can also help to build a community and celebrate cultural and regional diversity. Clean: When we talk about clean food, we’re talking about nutritious food that is as good for the planet as it is for your body. It’s grown and harvested with methods that have a positive impact on our local ecosystems and which also promote biodiversity. Fair: We believe that food is a universal right. Food that is fair should be accessible to all, regardless of your income, and should be produced by people who are treated with dignity and justly compensated for their labour.

n How will you work to incorporate this

movement in India? Although Slow Food in India is a relatively new concept, a concentrated effort has been made over the last few years to work on a rural grassroots network of small scale producers and an urban network of responsible consumers, including chefs. Slow Food projects on biodiversity such as Presidia, Ark of Taste and Gardens have also taken root, as has work on indigenous communities. The Slow Food local chapters are a hub of Slow Food members who are interested in the food that they procure and consume, and who participate in the philosophy of Slow Food and other related activities. n How did the idea of this movement

come about? The Slow Food Movement first began in Piazza di Spagna (Rome) in 1986. Its birth is related to a certain antiestablishment attitude, in open opposition to the Americanisation of Europe. When Carlo Petrini, a journalist, witnessed the opening of a well-known fast food restaurant in the historical enclave of the Italian capital, he was shaken. The boundaries of what is acceptable had been crossed, and he understood the dangers lying ahead for the dietary habits of the population in the old continent. This sparked the creation of the Slow Food Movement. The idea was to protect seasonal, fresh and local products from fast food harassment, to defend the interest of local producers, to maintain sustainability as well as to respect biodiversity and to warn consumers about the evident dangers of over-exploitation of the soil for financial reasons. n Why did you choose Mumbai as the city

to launch this movement? The question that is being asked is how we’re going to feed cities, because, according to statistics, 80% of the population will be migrating to cities. The load will be huge as most farmers don’t want to continue to work on farms and their children would rather come to cities to do odd jobs. So, we’re in dire need of alternative food systems.

n What has the response in Mumbai

>> Arina and Kumud (above) are responsible for bringing the Slow Food Movement to Mumbai

Kaboom & the Slow Food movement In June this year, The Slow Food Movement picked Kaboom as the place to introduce its Mumbai chapter. We spoke to owner, Yohaan Dattoobhai to find out more about Kaboom’s association with the cause.

way to launch the Mumbai chapter than by demonstrating how the philosophies of the Slow Food Movement are brought to life at a popular community eatery.

n The idea of the Slow Food Mumbai Movement is to

n How do you incorporate this movement at Kaboom?

make good food choices. Why do you think Kaboom was the perfect place to introduce it? Slow Food International began as a reaction to unhealthy food options that are taking over major cities in Italy. In many ways, Kaboom’s journey is similar, as it began due to the frustration about the unavailability of good quality food options in Mumbai. Kaboom’s food is made using exceptional products of good quality, which are sourced responsibly and prepared authentically — inculcating many of the Slow Food values. The proof of any pudding is in the eating, as they say. So, what better

Our culinary philosophies have been influenced by the great work that the Slow Food Movement has done in Europe, so hosting the launch of the Slow Food Movement was a way to acknowledge it. Specifically, our efforts to promote farms that use natural techniques and work with local artisans are some examples of how Kaboom incorporates the principals of the Slow Food Movement in its operations. We also hope to collaborate on more joint events in the future that will help Slow Food Mumbai become a strong platform for awareness and education of the important food issues in our city.

been like so far? Mumbai is now ready to have a conversation about food. People are keen to understand it and are beginning to ask the right questions about it. Slow Food has gained momentum abroad and people who work in the food industry have been waiting for the movement to enter India. There is a definite interest, as people want to witness a change and help Mumbai become a mega food city.

hOW TO DO iT hydrate Hydrating your skin is a crucial step. Applying an under-eye cream will plump up the area under your eyes and reduce the prominence of wrinkles. This will also make the process of baking easier.

Conceal The next step is to apply a thick concealer. Getting this right can be tricky, so apply it from the apples of your cheekbones towards the inner corners of your eyes and then dab it with a wet makeup sponge to make sure that it blends well.

Layer it You can skip this step if you’re averse to the idea of caking your face with makeup. But, for longlasting results, you will need to apply another layer of concealer. You can do this with a brush, but blending it in with a wet makeup sponge will give you a better finish.

Powder it Liberally dust a little translucent powder over the concealer you just applied, using a makeup brush of good quality.

Bake it This is where the “baking” comes in. Spray some setting spray on to a wet sponge, dab it in some more translucent powder and apply it over the area where you applied your concealer. If you want, you can also apply this to other areas of your face. Allow it to set for around 10 minutes and let the powder bake with your body’s natural heat.

Brush it off After 10 minutes, use a fluffy powder brush to dust off any excess powder with light, gentle hand movements. This will leave you with a fresh, baked glow.

WhaT eXPeRTS ThiNK Vipul considers this trend a fresh change. He says, “It’s good to see new trends coming up in the beauty industry. MayBeLLiNe COLORShOW LiPSTiCKS

I am relatively new to the orange lipstick trend, but I am quite comfortable wearing the Orange Icon shade. You can build the colour according to how bright you want it and it’s so creamy that I don’t even need to use a lip balm before applying it. Even when it fades after a couple of hours, it leaves behind a nice coral tinge. The Fuschia Flare is a typical Maybelline pink — a bright pop of colour that lasts for hours. What stuck out for me from the range was the Cherry Crush, a reddish pink shade that’s closer to cherry than any other lipstick I own. It’s smooth, glides on like a dream and the selling point for me was that it didn’t crack and seep into my lip lines — which is a problem I have with almost every other lipstick that I own! The Red Rush is exactly what you need when you’re heading to a party. The colour will highlight your lips perfectly and moulds well into the dark lipstick trend. Moreover, it stays for at least 2-3 hours, which is definitely a plus point! Rating *** Price `675 Where www.colorbarcosmetics.com

If we could describe Neha’s ensemble in one word, it would be terrible. The colour of that jumpsuit is absolutely stunning and we’d give her brownie points for her lip colour, but those ruffled sleeves are just not the right pick for her arms. Those white wedges should have stayed at home as well. We also wish she could have gone for a jumpsuit that was longer in length as that would suit her body type perfectly.

Shriya has a complexion that would go with almost any colour, and clearly, orange looks absolutely stunning on her. We love the slightly texturised hairstyle and her choice of jewellery in on point. However, we don’t quite understand whats going on with her dress. The neckline seems to be a weirdly lopsided Peter Pan collar of sorts and the hemline should definitely have been shorter.

concealor and a good under-eye cream before baking. “You need to apply a lot of powder to bake your makeup, and this can dry your skin out. So, be careful about the products that you use,” she explains. n Using products that match your skin tone is

the key to perfecting any look, and that is exactly what Vipul stresses on. He says, “The colour of your foundation makes a lot of difference to the final result. Pick colours that compliment your skin tone.” n When it comes to using translucent powder,

pick one that is slightly lighter than your skin tone. “Use a translucent powder that is a little lighter than your skin colour. When you’re applying it, use a damp sponge and pack it on. Wait for 5-10 minutes and then dust it off. Use it only on areas where you want your skin to look brighter and more highlighted,” Virginia suggests.

A new entry to Bollywood, we haven’t really got a chance to witness Athiya’s fashion game yet. She plays it safe here, in a retro midi dress that cinches at the waist and her classic black pumps. We’re sure that Parineeti can afford a good stylist but we wonder, why doesn’t she? MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JULY 23, 2015 >> Switch to a different work field to get your professional life back on track after a long sabbatical

bang If you’ve been on a long sabbatical, the thought of going back to work can be nerve-wracking. Dev Goswami & Katha Nauriyal tell you about the best career options and bring you a few tips

S

ometimes, as much as I love Brady, being a mother just isn’t enough! How often do you relate to this quote from the film, Sex and the City 2? Having the opportunity to contribute to your family, emotionally as well as financially, is fulfilling. And, if you’re a mother, there will come a time when your children are grown up enough for you to do something for yourself. You may be nervous, but striking a balance between being a mother and restarting your career is not as impossible as you may think. If you’re on the hunt for something new after a long sabbatical, here are a few jobs you can look into.

n teaching Neetal Shelar took a 9-year-long break from her

career. When she wanted to start working again, she decided to join her sister’s event management company. However, the routine was gruelling, leaving her with no time for her children. So, she decided to take on a teaching position at an international school and has been teaching ever since. If you have the necessary qualifications, teaching gives you the best of both worlds — you will have a convenient work schedule as well as a decent salary. Neetal explains, “One of the benefits of being a teacher is that you get to enjoy vacations, making it easier for you to spend time with your children.” If you’d like to work from home, you can choose home tutoring or virtual teaching.

n Interior designing If you have

Back to the old joB

a knack for picking great home décor and love to design, interior designing could be an option to consider. Start by offering to help your friends with a home makeover. This isn’t just a great way to show off your work, it will also help your reach by word of mouth.

Of course, going back to your old job is always a safe bet provided you have the options. However, remember that your sabbatical won’t be an excuse for any slack on your part. Anjali tells us that keeping yourself updated with what’s happening in the world is extremely important. She also adds, “One mistake that women who go on sabbaticals make is that they lose touch with their colleagues and bosses.” These contacts will help you once you’re ready to come back and even if you’ve lost touch, it is a good idea to give them a friendly call a few weeks before you plan to come back. Also, remember to show enthusiasm and get ready to adapt to a different style of working than you were used to.

n marketing Okay, we know that you weren’t expecting

something like this to be a on the list, but there’s a good reason you should consider looking at a marketing job. Anjali Gulati, founder and director of Back to the Front, a firm that helps mothers and women to be financially independent, tells us, “Multi-level marketing is a good alternative because a lot of companies are looking for mothers who can sell a range of products.” n the usual suspects If you have a flair for writing, you can

monetise a blog. However, while this will occupy you creatively, making money off it will be a long, daunting task. If you’re internet savvy, social media marketing is something that you can consider. However, remember that competition in this field is cut-throat, so it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Another option is data entry — the work can be mind-numbingly boring, but you usually get to choose the hours and can work from home. So, you can consider this if making pots of money isn’t a priority for you.

n home catering Of late, we’ve been seeing a number of

services that offer home-cooked food. From delivery services such as Tiny Owl (they have a separate homemade food service, where you can sign up as a chef) to individuals using social media to branch out on their own, home catering is a great way to make some money in the comfort of your own home, using your kitchen credentials to help you along. If you’re already a good cook, you don’t have to bother learning a new skill either.

I’ve been told that working at a call centre is a great in-between and they pay well too. However, I’ve also heard that they’re unsafe for women, so my parents aren’t keen on letting me join one. dear Vaishnavi, To be frank, working at a call centre is not going to help you develop any specific job

skills for other fields. However, it is not completely useless either. It will teach you about work ethics and help you develop your personality. You’ll learn to be polite to people even when they hurl abuses at you, and this type of job teaches you to be patient and focus on your objectives. There will be certain issues that you can’t handle on your own, which is something you will need to accept. Not only will this be useful in other jobs and fields, it will also help anyone who is looking to be an entrepreneur or launching their own start-up. our dishwasher may have been pitched as a great kitchen utility, helping you wash dishes without a hassle. It saves you time and, most importantly, the headache of soaping, scrubbing and rinsing. All you need to do is place the rinsed cutlery neatly into the contraption — some models come with separate sections, compartments and fittings, making it even easier — push a few buttons and relax while your dishes are cleaned. But, did you know that there are several other household items that you can clean simply by throwing them in your dishwasher? Here are a few surprising ways to use your dishwasher and make your life (and chores!) easier. n shoes Shoes are difficult to clean,

especially if you have to scrub under the tongue! You can wash them in the dishwasher, but only if they won’t get damaged with water. Remember to remove the laces before popping them in and remove any inserts for a better wash. n makeup brushes Use the cutlery tray

the dishwasher without soap; also, make sure to pick a short cycle. However, unless your potatoes are very dirty (or muddy), there’s no need to use the dishwasher to clean them. You can clean other vegetables that grow underground in a similar manner. n refrigerator shelves Now, here’s

« TOP FIVE WAYS TO

LIGHT UP YOUR HOME WITHOUT WIRES Letting wires hang down from your ceiling looks untidy and will ruin the look of a well done up home. Thankfully, Dev Goswami has some great alternatives Battery operated fairy lights

Fairy lights are the easiest way to add a little fun to dull décor. However, with extension cords and ugly black wires, you run the risk of ruining the look with them hanging all over the place. Battery operated fairy lights will take care of this problem. You may have to spend a bit (Amazon.in has a pretty option for `1,900), but they are quite versatile — hang them up near your window, string them over the mirror or bunch them in a trendy basket.

led ceiling lights

Dome lights are quite common at hardware stores across the city, and they help improve décor without any visible wires. But, in order to install them, you will need an electric point on your ceiling. The dome will help you conceal the point. If you aren’t lucky enough to have an electric point where you’d like to install the light, you can pick battery-operated versions, which are also available at several lighting stores. The plus point is that you can install them wherever you want.

funky coasters

If you aren’t a fan of lights and lamps, we’ve got he perfect accessory for you. Pick up a set of LED coasters! There are several different types available online, but we love the Philips Accent Coasters, which will add a subtle touch of colour that won’t look out of place in your living room. You will find them at most electrical stores, but remember that they do cost a lot — around `8,600! There are cheaper variants on websites such as Funcart and Amazon, where you can get multi-coloured options from `300 per piece.

led cuBes

While these are often marketed as LED ice cubes, we believe that with a little innovate thinking, you can use them to add a funky touch to your home décor. Simply buy a set of LED cubes (such as the one pictured from Amazon.in for `300), place them in a transparent glass and position them in strategic corners of your room. Dim the wall lighting, turn these LED cubes on and see your room swathed in a neon glow.

rechargeaBle lamps

The idea comes from emergency lamps, but you can now find rechargeable, decorative lamps. They are portable, and are small enough not to seem out of place. We found a retro-inspired one on Ebay.in for `999, which will help accentuate your décor. You can find several other options on shopping websites.

You start arguing for various reasons but end on the same note. In simple terms, you have the same argument over and over again. a. True. b. False.

>> If, despite putting in all your time and effort, your relationship still hits rockbottom, it may be time to visit a therapist

4. You’ve been having constant thoughts about the new guy you met at work and you suspect that your partner may be having an extramarital affair. a. True. b. False.

Think you can fix our readers’ complicated problems? read on...

I had been chatting with Trevor for a little over a month. We had never met or even spoken to each other. Just messages but it felt like I could trust him. I liked him a lot. I am fifteen and he is sixteen. Last week he asked if we could meet. Meet me! We can go for ice-cream and a movie!

I had never even spoken to him so I called his number but he didn't pick up. Instead he just messaged... Wear a pink hat so I know it's you! See you! I have a surprise for you!

I was still upset the following Monday at school when I walked in. I didn't even register the giggling and whispering around me...

7. As you feel hurt or rejected, you and your partner have stopped making efforts to make things better between you two. a. True. b. False. 8. There’s evidently nothing wrong with the relationship but you still feel that it needs a fix. a. True. b. False.

Mostly As You and your partner need a therapist to save your relationship. There’s nothing you can do to make things better. Considering having an extra-marital affair is a serious indication of a fallout between you and your partner. Lack of emotional and physical intimacy is definitely adding to your problems. A therapist will show you the good side of your marriage, which will help you reconnect and make you focus on the bigger picture rather than concentrating on the smaller things. So, book an appointment soon! Mostly Bs Your relationship seems to be going smoothly — you don’t need couples’ therapy. It seems like you’re still in your honeymoon phase or you know how to make things work well. Even if there are small issues, you and your partner are mature enough to know how to sort things out. But, if you know someone who’s having a rough time, we suggest you ask them to take this quiz.

5. Your children have been able to sense the tension between you two. As a result, they’ve been questioning if you’re heading for a divorce. a. True. b. False. 6. You find fault in everything your partner does. a. True. b. False.

« DEAR GRACE, I HAVE A PROBLEM... Dear Grace, My partner keeps asking me to stop wearing makeup. I have been wearing makeup for as long as I can remember! In fact, I had it on when we first met, so it’s not as though it’s a new development. I don’t understand how it concerns him when I use my own money to buy beauty products and apply them on my skin. He comes up with silly excuses like “This colour doesn’t suit you, use a lighter shade” or “You are wearing so much eye-shadow and it looks ghastly!” He doesn’t even care about

« SOS: SOLVE OUR SITUATION!

I decided I would go meet him. I told my parents where I was going but didn't tell them whom I was meeting... Which was just as well because he never showed up. I waited for two hours! I kept trying to call and message but his phone was switched off... Cold feet I figured...

2. Every time you are together, there’s a deafening silence that makes the environment very uncomfortable. a. True. b. False. 3. Since there’s a lack of emotional intimacy, your physical relationship isn’t doing well either. It’s been ages since you were physically intimate! a. True. b. False.

mall and medium businesses (SMBs) in India using cloud and mobile tools can expect annual revenue growth of up to 27%, a study by Google and Deloitte said yesterday. The report titled 'Connected Small Business: Unlocking India's Digital Potential' said SMEs moving from offline to an advanced digital engagement could see revenue growth of up to 27%, compared to those who have not begun their digital adoption journey. "Also, businesses that are "offline" (no internet connectivity, devices or online presence) are not only not growing, their revenue is

declining eight% annually," Deloitte Director India Prakash C Prabhakar told reporters here. Based on a survey of 500 businesses across verticals like BFSI, manufacturing, retail and agriculture, the report analyses the digital engagement of Indian SMBs to understand how digital technology can help them. "India has huge potential to become one of the biggest economies in the world and digitisation is one of the important factors that can make a significant difference," he said. In today's time, technology is a critical success factor and can be the differentiator between success and failure, Prabhakar added. The report said digitally advanced

SMEs can help India achieve its national objectives of higher economic growth, creating jobs and more exports. Compared with offline SMBs, those with higher digital engagement are more likely to increase employment by up to 84%, increase access to international markets by up to 65%, and likely to offer new products up to 4.5 times. "From helping SMEs grow, to going global, or connecting and collaborating with employees more easily, cloud and mobile tools can supercharge small businesses, and we look forward to helping more of them unlock their digital potential," Google India Country Head (Google for Work) Mohit Pande said.

Cabinet To Take Up Gold Monetisation Scheme Soon By A Business Reporter

he government is likely to consider and approve Gold Monetisation Scheme in the next few weeks, which proposes to offer taxfree interest to individual on depositing the yellow metal with banks. "Cabinet note on this (Gold Monetisation Scheme) has been circulated. It will take couple of weeks before approval comes," sources said. Various proposals including interest rate are at the discussion stage, sources said. The draft gold monetisation scheme announced in May proposed to provide incentives to the banks, while individuals and institutions can deposit as low as 30 gm of gold. It also proposed that the interest earned on it would be exempt from income tax as well as capital gains tax. The stock of gold in India that is held by people that is 'neither traded nor monetised' is estimated

to be over 20,000 tonnes, which would be worth about Rs 60 lakh crore at the current market price. India is one of the largest consumers of gold in the world and imports as much as 800-1,000 tonnes each year. As per the draft guidelines, a person or institution holding surplus gold can get it valued from BIS-approved hallmarking centres, open a Gold Savings Account in banks for a minimum period of one year and earn interest in either cash or gold units. The scheme, which is proposed to be initially introduced only in select cities, was announced in the Budget this year by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. "The new scheme will allow the depositors of gold to earn interest in their metal accounts and the jewellers to obtain loans in their metal account. Banks/other dealers would also be able to monetise this gold," Jaitley had said.

ment to re-promulgate the ordinance once again. The ordinance was promulgated for the third time on May 31. Justifying the re-promulgation, sources in the government say there is nothing unusual in the re-promulgation of the land ordinance. They said at least 15 ordinances have been promulgated twice or more, reports PTI. An ordinance, which has a life span of six months, has to be repromulgated if it does not get the endorsement of Parliament within six weeks of the start of a session. The Monsoon session ends on August 13. The government has so far maintained that re-promulgation was necessary for maintaining its continuity and providing a framework to compensate people whose land is acquired.

Adi Godrej’s Prescription For Robustness In Corporate Governance By A Business Reporter

A

dvocating the need for robustness in corporate governance, Adi Godrej, Past President, CII and Chairman, Godrej Group says that “organisations need to be principlebased and not rule based because principles are harder to get around than rules.” Speaking at the launch session of the CII Governance Series 2015-16 and advocating against more laws, he said, “the need of the hour is not more rules but effective enforcement of the laws. Legislation alone is not a panacea to good corporate governance,” he said. Laying stress on the overall well being of the company, he advised against pursuit of endless profit. “Promoters should desist from actions that are only in their interest and not in the interest of the company.” He enforced that corporate governance tends to be confused as protection of minority stakeholders; whereas in reality it should promote the long term good of the company. He enumerated how all stake holders should be considered equal from a corporate governance point of view. Enforcing the need for a balanced Board view in governance, he said that it is very important to get broad-ranging suggestions, including points of view that are different since dissenting views were also likely to be good for the company. He also explained the need to encourage whistle blowers saying they could be good for a company in the long term. Speaking on the benefits of corporate governance, he asserted how

good governance, being the responsibility and privilege of each and every stakeholder of the company, benefits it by way of providing competitive advantage in the global market, helping raise capital widely, easily and cheaply, leading to good employee morale with high productivity. Talking about the challenges, Godrej shared how managements are at times faced with many dilemmas given how they have to balance short, medium and long term goals and interests of the company. The best management is that which take a reasonably long term view of things, he felt. Setting the tone for the subject, Pradeep Lankapalli, Managing Director India and Global Head of Operations Centers, Thomson Reuters said, “In the current economic environment, governance is not just a compliance mechanism, it is also an enabler for good corporate performance.

CPI(M) demands Yakub Memon’s mercy petition to be accepted N

EW DELHI: CPI(M) today insisted that the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts convict Yakub Memon's execution will not serve the interests of justice, and demanded that his mercy petition be accepted saying that he chose to surrender and cooperate with the authorities. Memon, whose curative petition was dismissed by the Supreme Court yesterday, has submitted a mercy petition for the Maharashtra Governor, in the last-ditch effort to prevent execution of his death sentence on July 30. Reacting to the Supreme Court's decision, CPI(M) said that unlike the main explosion culprits - who the party said had escaped law Memon had chosen to surrender before Indian authorities, stand trial and provide information about the conspiracy. "Yet, he was singled out for death sentence while main perpetrators are at large. It would serve ends of justice if Memon's death penalty is commuted to a life sentence. CPI (M) has been in principle advocating abolition of death penalty. Hence, his mercy petition, which has been filed, should be accepted," the party said in a statement. While pressing the demand, the communist party cited the example of those convicted in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case whose sentences

were commuted to life. EW DELHI: The appointment of Swati Maliwal as Chief of Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has become yet another flashpoint between AAP government and Lt Governor Najeeb Jung who declared her nomination null and void, saying it did not have legal sanctity and was in violation of constitutional provisions. Jung's office shot off a letter to the Chief Minister's office saying the notification appointing her was "ultra vires and infructuous" as it does not have his approval. Referring to a Home Ministry order, the

LG's office insisted that 'Government' meant the "Lieutenant Governor of the National Capital Territory of Delhi" appointed by the President, insisting that he was sole authority in deciding on major issues including appointment to top positions. "The constitutionally valid consistent definition of Government is the Delhi Lieutenant Governor appointed by the President under Article 239 and designated as such under article 239 AA of the Constitution," the LG's office said.

HANDIGARH: Former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda today said that setting up of oneman Commission to probe the grant of license(s) of some entities, including Robert Vadra's company, for developing commercial colonies in Sector 83 of Gurgaon was a "political vendetta" by the BJP government. "You have to see the aim behind setting up of this inquiry commission by the BJP government. Why have they singled out Sector 83 of Gurgaon? It's because, here, name of some relative (Vadra) of a VIP (Sonia Gandhi) figures. This is sheer political vendetta," the former twotime chief minister said. "If they had to set up a Commission, then it should have involved everything (all land deals) including

ment to act against a particular person (Vadra) in a selective manner)," Hooda said addressing a press conference here. He further said, "They are not going to find anything. We had not shown any favour to anyone." State Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma keeps claiming that previous Congress government in Haryana gave land worth crores of rupees to Vadra, son-in-law of Congress President Sonia Gandhi, he said. "I challenge anyone to prove that we extended any favour. We have not given a single inch of land to Bhupinder Singh Hooda anyone. Let them (govt) come out with a single instance, where they when their government was in can prove that the land which beplace (in power). Why one Sector (in longed to Haryana government had Gurgaon) has been singled out now, been acquired by our government this shows the intent of this govern- and handed over to any person..,"

he said. The Congress leader said that when any person purchases land from another person, the government's role is to see whether the stamp duty has been duly paid, registry of the property has been made according to the prevalent Circle rate and license fee has been paid or not. When asked if the Commission of Inquiry had summoned him, Hooda retorted, "why should it summon me?" The Khattar government appointed retired Judge of Delhi High Court, Justice S N Dhingra, as oneman Commission of Inquiry to probe issues concerning the grant of license(s) for developing commercial colonies by the Department of Town and Country Planning, Haryana, to some entities in Sector 83 in Gurgaon. EW DELHI: India's hockey chief coach Paul van Ass, who claims he has been fired from the job following an altercation with federation president Narinder Batra, today said he is willing to resume his duties provided there is no "interefernce" in his work. Van Ass, who took charge of the team only five months back, had alleged on Monday that he had been "fired" by Hockey India following the spat with Batra after the quarter-final match against Malaysia in the World League Semi-finals in Antwerp, Belgium earlier this month. After the episode, a fuming Batra constituted a special committee under Olympian Harbinder Singh a take a call on the coach's future on July 24. Asked if he is ready to rejoin the Indian team if asked to do so, van Ass told PTI from Rotterdam: "It's too early to jump the gun. Let's wait and see. The fact is I am not welcome any more. For sure I have been sacked just a week after the tournament (in Antwerp). I am just waiting for the official word. "But whatever happens I am OK. I have never quit the

job. I have never said I have quit. What can you do if you are fired? "But if am asked to return I am fine. But before that we will have lots of discussion. I am just very straight. My position is simple 'don't interfere in my primary process'," Van Ass added. A day after Van Ass claimed that he was sacked by HI, federation chief Batra hit back at him, saying that "Van Ass is not a good coach" and was He cannot judge what he "rude". Van Ass's predecessors Jose Brasa, Michael Nobbs and Terry Walsh -- all of whom were hired by Sports Authority of India on the recommendations of HI at hefty salaries -- also left the country on an unceremonious note. The Dutchman, however, made it clear that he was not in India in lure of money but to create a "magic" in next year's Rio Olympics. "I was not in India for money. By God's grace I have earned enough in my lifetime to lead a healthy and good life," Van Ass said. "What excited me about the India job was Olympics. But as a coach I was not just interested in going to the Olympics. I wanted to create a magic and the boys were pretty fired up for the job. That's the ultimate fun," he said. "It was possible to get a medal (in Olympics) and it could have been done." Van Ass, who was appointed at the end of January this year, was awarded a three-year contract till 2018. The World League semifinals in Antwerp, earlier this month, was the Dutchman's second assignment with the Indian team.

EW DELHI: Legendary hockey Olympian Balbir Singh Sr is extremely disappointed in the manner Hockey India has handled the Paul Van Ass issue making it clear that this frequent hire and fire policy would affect national team's performance with only one year left for Rio Olympics. It reflects poorly on us and it would definitely affect the on-field performance of the Indian national team," the triple Olympic gold medallist told PTI in an exclusive interview reacting to sacking of Terry Walsh and Van Ass in a space of eight months. Only two days back, Dutch coach Paul Van Ass created a flutter by claiming that he has been fired by Hockey India following his alleged public altercation with federation president Narinder Batra.

UMBAI: Indian batting legend VVS Laxman believes that the current national cricket team is full of match-winners and if they play to their potential, they can beat Sri-Lanka in their own backyard. India will be playing three-Test series in Sri Lanka, commencing on August 12. "The current Indian team has hardly played any Test in the subcontinent over the last two years. So India would be keen to do well in Sri Lanka. It is important for them to play to their potential," Laxman told PTI in an interview here. "I always believe that the current Indian team is highly talented with a lot of match winners. I am sure if they play to their potential they will beat SriLanka in Sri-Lanka which would be a great achievement," said Laxman, who was in the city to announce his association with cricket website -cricketcountry.Com, an India Website Private Limited portal group Website. The 40-year-old former middle order batsman said even the Sri Lankans would be looking to put their best foot forward as it is going to be the farewell series for Lankan cricketing legend Kumar Sangakkara. "It is going to be a big series for Sri Lanka also as it would be the farewell series for Sangakkara. I am sure they will also want to be at their best. It's going to be closelycontested series," Laxman, who has represented India in 134 Tests, said. Heaping praise on the current India Test skipper Virat Kohli,

Laxman said: "I think Virat has really done well as a captain in the limited opportunity he has got so far. I believe it is important for everyone to be as natural as possible. Virat has always been someone who is aggressive and positive. "The way he has improved as a batsmen to become the most prolific run getter in world cricket over the last 2-3 years shows how hardworking he is and how keen he is to improve as a player. And I am sure, he would be doing the same thing to improve as captain.

BCCI SHOULD WORK TOWARDS RESTORING CREDIBILITY OF GAME: LAXMAN Terming the IPL spot-fixing and betting scandal as "unfortunate", former India batsman V V S Laxman today said the BCCI should work towards cleansing the game and restoring the credibility of the cash-rich league. "It (the IPL scandal) is an unfortunate incident and the BCCI is working on how to restore the credibility of the game. They have formed a working group to look into the Justice (Retd) R M Lodha Committee recommendations. They are capable of doing that," Laxman told 'Times Now' when asked about his views on the Lodha committee's verdict. The Supreme-Court appointed Lodha committee last week suspended IPL teams Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals for two years for betting activities of their key officials Gurunath Meiyappan and Raj Kundra during the 2013 season.

Focus on third spinner as selectors set to pick squad N

EW DELHI: The third specialist spinner's slot will be the subject of much deliberation when the national selection committee, headed by Sandeep Patil, meets here today to announce the squad for the three-Test away series against Sri Lanka starting August 12. Barring this one aspect, the five wise men on the selection panel would have very little to fret on while picking the squad for the longer format where at least 13 players will automatically select themselves. Apart from third

spinner's position, it will also be interesting to find out whether it will be a 15 or 16member squad for the threematch series. The six specialist batsmen who are automatic choices are openers Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan, skipper Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma and A team captain Cheteshwar Pujara. Young KL Rahul, who missed out against Bangladesh due to dengue, is likely to come back as the seventh batsman. Wriddhiman Saha is another automatic selection as

first-choice wicketkeeper while an additional 16th member might make provision for Naman Ojha or Sanju Samson as the second wicketkeeper. The three pacers, who are likely to make the cut are Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Pacer Varun Aaron is also a certainty if he recovers from his bout of influenza. While the two off-spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Harbhajan Singh are sure to retain their places, it is remains to be seen whether the

selection committee opts for a left-arm spinner in Axar Patel or a veteran leg-spinner in Amit Mishra. With Karn Sharma sustaining a fracture before Zimbabwe series, it brings 32-year-old Haryana leggie Mishra into the picture. Mishra has 43 wickets from 13 Test matches but he has last donned whites for India way back in 2011 against England at the Oval, in which he excelled as a batsman with scores of 43 and 84 while going wicketless for 170 runs in 38 overs.

t does not pour most of the time in Pune. There is rain but the monsoon track built by Mr. Zavaray Poonawalla will make it possible to conduct racing on a wet day. The climate in Pune is always pleasant and there is nothing like being in Pune for two days — Thursday and Friday. Racing begins today and ends after three months on October 25th.

Total Stakes: Rs. 13 crore Racing Mumbai and Pune attract quite a few sponsors. As many as 18 races during the ensuing season are sponsored races. There could be some more sponsorship during the

ensuing season. There will be quite a few Million races during the season. Two classic races will be held here: The Pune Nanoli Derby and the Indian St. Leger. The Derby will be sponsored by Mr. K.N. Dhunjibhoy’s Nanoli Stud Farm. The Derby weekend will also feature the hugely popular Octoberfest which will be organised by the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce and its associates. The Indian St. Leger, the last of the classics adds to the high quality of racing in Pune. The Pune season has also international sponsors — Irish Thoroughbred Marketing and Goffs. Some new facilities at the course have been put in place.

Champion trainers Who will be the champion trainer this season? Pesi Shroff has a big chance with a large number of class horses. And Pesi has proved himself as a very talented trainer. Another trainer who has a big chance of becoming a champion is Narendra Lagad. Becoming a champion in Pune is nothing new to him. He is a wonder trainer who can make ordinary horses come up fast and win. He has the required technique to do this. Above all, he works hard with all the horses entrusted to him. Nobody can train horses like he can. He has a big chance to become the champion. Another trainer who is in the list is Malesh Narredu. Malesh who was a top-class jockey has some top-class horses. He is going to make it in a big way. I have a feeling that trainer C.D. Katrak like during the recently concluded Mumbai season will lead in some of the graded races. So will Bezan Chenoy who continues to be one of her top trainers. We have Imtiaz Sait who is a top-tracked trainer and Dallas Todywalla who has a good string of horses. May the best trainer become the champion.

EW DELHI: Cracking the whip on the three archers who missed the bronze medal play-off during the recently-concluded World University Games, the Association of Indian Universities has banned them and their coach for three years, besides asking them to return the money spent on them. The AIU handed the suspension to archers Gurwinder Singh, Kanwalpreet Singh and Aman and official Jiwanjot Singh for "utter negligence" and "gross violation of rules", leading to "disrepute, embarrassment and tarnishing the image of India at the international platform". The compound team trio did not turn up at the bronze medal play-off against Italy in the July 3-14 World University Games at Gwangju in South Korea, thereby forfeiting the match. "The inquiry report was examined... It was found/observed that

athletes and official of the Indian contingent failed to turn up for participation in the prestigious event. This showed utter negligence of official duty and gross violation of 'Code of Conduct' of FISU rules by the athletes and official, leading to disrepute, embarrassment and tarnishing the image of India at the international platform," the AUI said in a letter addressed to secretaries of sports committees of the member universities. "Taking a serious view of the incident, it was decided to suspend athletes (Gurwinder Singh-GNDU Amritsar, Kanwalpreet Singh-Punjabi University and Aman-University of Rajasthan, Jaipur) and official Jiwanjot Singh (Punjabi University) for a period of three years w.E.F current year 2015-16 to 2017-18, barring them from association/ participation both in inter University tournaments and international

University Games," the letter said. The archers have also been asked to return the money spent on each of them on their selection, training and participation, including for booking flight tickets, which is expected to be to the tune of Rs 5 lakh per athlete. "Further, expenditure incurred on their selection, training and participation including TA/DA, playing kids, valid visa, travel tickets (both ways) need to be recovered from erring athletes and official immediately as Indian delegation was cleared and sponsored with a specific purpose of winning medal(s) and pursuing excellence at international sporting event, not for luxury excursion at the cost of public funding," AIU joint secretary sports Gurdeep Singh said in the letter. The Punjabi University at Patiala had borne the expenditure to send the archery team to Gwangju.

HENNAI: Opener Lokesh Rahul missed out on a hundred while captain Cheteshwar Pujara struck a solid fifty to take India A to 221 for six on a rain-affected day one of the first 'unofficial' cricket Test against Australia A. Rahul (96 off 185 balls) and Pujara (55 off 122) held the innings together before the touring Australians fought back on day when 77.1 overs were bowled due to rain towards the end of day's play. Young Shreyas Iyer was another batsman who contributed 39 off 58 balls. Andrew Fekete and Steve O' Keefe took wickets each for the visitors. Rahul, playing his first competitive match after missing out on the one-off Test in Bangladesh due to dengue, was cautious from the beginning after his team opted to bat. The Karnataka batsman played well but missed out on a century by giving a simple catch at mid-on to Usman

His gritty knock saw him Pujara, who is leading the A hit 14 boundaries besides side after being overlooked sharing a crucial 107-run from the playing eleven in the

one-off Test in Bangladesh last month, spent substantial time at the crease, collecting seven fours in the process. Batting was not easy on a slow wicket and the Australia bowlers too did well to comeback in the contest. Feteke, who claimed 2 for 38 in 17 overs, later said the wicket was slow, helping him get rid of Pujara. "Due to slowness of the wicket it is difficult to score runs," he said. India lost opener Abhinav Mukund cheaply before Rahul and Pujara steadied the innings. The quick fall of Pujara and Karun Nair (0) put the hosts in a spot of bother but Rahul and Iyer stemmed the fall of wickets and at tea, India were 175 for 3 in 57 overs. Iyer was looking good for a big knock but was clean bowled soon after tea. Umpire Nitin Menon, who first thought the delivery was a no-ball, gave the batsman out only after a consultation with the third umpire.

Mourinho open to MLS move ‘one day’ M

ONTREAL: Jose Mourinho is open to the possibility of one day coaching in Major League Soccer but says there is no chance of him heading Stateside while his hunger for success in European club football remains. The Chelsea boss, widely regarded as one of the best managers in world football, said he would be interested in coaching in the MLS to "give something back" to a developing football community. But just as Mourinho has rebuffed opportunities to coach at international level, he has ruled out a switch anytime soon. Asked if he ever saw himself coaching in the MLS, Mourinho told reporters: "One day, not now, for the same reason I say 'one day, not now' for national teams. "Because for national teams it's one game every two months, one big competition every two years. Yes maybe I would like that one day but not now. For the MLS, yes, one day. But why not now? Because I want to be in the best competitions. I want to be in the Champions League, the Premier League,

I want to have the biggest challenges." But Mourinho admitted he was attracted by the idea of helping the MLS develop. "I would like to contribute with something where lots of people are loving the game. We feel we have to give something. Why not try to give something back?" Several high-profile European and South American stars such as Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Andrea Pirlo and Kaka have all headed to the MLS in recent seasons, a trend that Mourinho applauds. "We still miss these guys Kaka, Lampard, Gerrard," said Mourinho. "But to have these guys can only help the league." Mourinho said as the global profile of the MLS improved it had given younger players "the idea of what the MLS can be. Not just the end of their career for some but the beginning of their career for many," Mourinho said. "I think the league is going in the right direction. Soccer can't compete to be the number one in North America. But if I compare soccer now with 2004, which is when we came here for the first time, it's much bigger."
