MURDER OR HIT-N-RUN? By Zuber Ansari

T

he staffers of Kherwadi Police have been busy from Sunday late night, spending most of their time in slums adjoining the Western Express Highway in Bandra (East) along with the photograph of a 25 year-old woman's dead body. The dead body was found lying on the road, and in a bid to established her identity cops have been showing her photograph to various people whilst also conducting investigation from the murder angle too. An unidentified woman died in a suspected hit and run accident on Sunday night on the western express highway in Santacruz (east). The Kherwadi police have sent wireless messages and also informed the Mumbai police control about the incident along with the girl’s description. A police officer said there are two possibilities either the girl was trying to the cross the road and was hit by a speeding vehicle or someone threw her from a running car. The police have found a small purse nearby her body but it was empty so police was not able to establish her identity. “The girl was wearing Punjabi dress and it appears that she might be returning from work and was trying to cross the highway” said Sujata Patil, senior inspector at Kherwadi police station. “We have not found the girl’s mobile phone so may be someone has stolen her phone” added Patil. The police are visiting various areas at Santacruz, Khar and Bandra nearby Western Express Highway and showing her picture to the people, added Patil. The incident came to light around 1am on Monday when police station was informed by control room about the body laying on WEH, few meters away from south bound Santacruz flyover. We have sent messages to all the police stations about this woman but till now have not got any feed back. If she had gone missing from her house then her family members would have informed the cops. But looking at the injury marks on her body, it seems that someone has killed her and then thrown her body from a moving car, police said. We have got some clue in the case, but it is too early to say anything. On the basis of primary report we have registered an offence against unidentified car for knocked down this woman and are proceeding with the investigation, the officer added. The woman seems to be from middle class family and her medical report is awaited wherein we will come to know cause of her death and other possibilities too, Sujata Patil further added.

"It is a black day for democracy", Sonia Gandhi said. The suspension of 25 Congress MPs in a rare action by the Speaker in the history of Lok Sabha today was dubbed by party President Sonia Gandhi as a 'Black Day' for democracy while another leader said the "Gujarat model" where MLAs face such measures is being implemented. h Dilip, Dilip please come and take me from here, I want to go home, I love my home and want to rest there, not in hospital,” are the painful words of helpless and hapless mother Hansa. Around two weeks ago, in chilly winds with rain spitting down on the city, the cruel son of 85-year old mother threw her away near Bombay hospital dargah of Bahauddin Shah Baba from a running car. Hansa Rajput, the 85-year-old lady is wailing at GT hospital still clinging on to the hope, that Dilip her son will return and take her back home. Hansa was admitted to the hospital by a pedestrian, who was passing through the Bombay hospital lane. The passer-by turned out to be Dr. Niranjan Patel, and this good Samaritan seeing her weeping loudly, approached her. She then proceeded to narrate her sad story to the doctor who seeing her pitiful condition rushed her to G.T hospital, and offered her some biscuits and raincoat to protect her from the heavy rains. Currently she is being treated at the hospital, and everyday the good doctor visits her asking her what she wants to eat, and then accordingly buying her the stuff. Talking to ADC, Hansa couldn't hold back the tears, said, “My son was driving me and suddenly the car stopped near Bombay hospital dargah and he threw me out of the car, I cried where are we and what are you doing, please take me home. But he threw me from the car and took off at full speed. I was getting drenched in the rain and shivering with emotional as well as physical pain on the foot path. I stay somewhere near Kalachowki at Ganesh Galli and my son's name is Dilip, please come I want to see you.” And she continued wailing. Dr. Niranjan Patel noted, “When I first saw Hansaji, she was in total pain, crying for help and searching for her son. I saw her condition and couldn’t stop myself and rushed her to hospital, I everyday visit her , as she is my Ba ( Mother), i want to do whatever is best for her”. The staff of G.T hospital are presently treating her. Superintendent of G.T hospital Dr. D.R.Kulkarni said, “She was admitted by Dr. Niranjan Patel and has been with us since 21st of July Since then we are taking care of her. Through the media I request, if her son is there than please come, your mother wants to see you”. Dargah Trustee Rizwan Merchant, a noted criminal lawyer said, “Our dargah trust is ready to take care of her, whatever medicines she needs. We are always there for to look after her, such a son should be punished as there exists some la in favour of senior citizens, wherein he can be booked against senior citizen act”. Police spokesperson DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni, said “We have formed a team to search for her house as well as for her son and we will proceed according to the law.”

25 Congress MPs suspended by Speaker spokesperson G V L Narasimha Rao said it was the Speaker's prerogative to take appropriate decisions to run the House smoothly in accordance with people's wishes. "It is the prerogative of the presiding officer to take all appropriate action to ensure that the House functions smoothly in accordance with wishes of people as it is the House of the people. Opposition members who have not heeded repeated warnings from the Chair had to be suspended because it was not possible to run the House smoothly in accordance with rules," Rao said. HAR HAR MAHADEV... Devotees are offering special prayers to Lord Shiva at Shree Markandeshwar Mahadev Mandir in Worli while celebrating 'First Shravan Somvar', on Monday.

Having a crush may boost desire for your partner! Are you married but can't take your eyes off a good looking co-worker? No need to feel guilty, as having a crush may actually boost your desire for your significant other, a new study has found. Researchers from Columbia University, Indiana University and the University of Kentucky-Lexington in US surveyed 160 women in relationships of three years or longer. The researchers wanted to explore their experiences with attractions and feelings for people other than their primary romantic partner. In the anonymous internet-based study, women were asked open-ended questions about the kinds of sexual attractions they had, and their strategies for dealing with them. Those questioned were typically married to highly educated men and were aged from 19 to 56 years old. The results showed that 70 per cent of women had at some point experienced a crush on someone else while dating their current partner.

A majority of them said their crushes were on people they worked with. However, the women questioned were not worried about the significance of being sexually attracted to someone else. Most felt it had no impact on their primary relationship - to the point that they did not even tell their partner about it. Women had varied experiences with, and diverse strategies for, managing crushes. The majority of women reported the crush did not impact their relationship, participants also reported that these crushes improved their desire for their partner. For these women, the crush acted as a conduit to sexual desire with their partner, as they described transferring the emotion from the crush to the partner and acting on this with their partner. The researchers concluded that women often funnelled increased sexual desire from a crush into their primary relationship.

Now, ‘smart’ mirror can track your health

Researchers are developing a 'smart' mirror that detects changes in an individual's face and breath to help them monitor their health. The Wize Mirror will use an array of sensors to detect changes in an individual's face and breath that point to the onset of diabetes, a heart attack or other cardiovascular diseases. The Wize Mirror, being developed by Semeoticons, a research group backed by the European Commission, then provides a health score and suggest lifestyle changes. A multispectral imaging system, which uses five cameras to capture specific wavelengths of light and a skin heater to stimulate the face, analyses tissue for fat content and blood for haemoglobin levels. A 3D scanner constructs a digital model of the face for analysis by software for shape changes, such as weight gain or swelling, while software checks for signs of stress, fatigue or anxiety. The Wize Sniffer captures breath samples to detect toxic molecules that suggest the use of tobacco and alcohol. The whole process takes about a minute.

Aquariums may lower your BP, heart rate

Watching aquariums and fish tanks could improve your physical and mental well-being by lowering blood pressure and reducing heart rate, a first-of-its-kind study has claimed. Experts assessed people's physical and mental responses to tanks containing varying levels of fish. The team of experts found that viewing aquarium displays led to noticeable reductions in blood pressure and heart rate, and that higher numbers of fish helped to hold people's attention for longer and improve their moods. While spending time in 'natural' environments has been shown to provide calming effects on humans, there has been very little research into the role that underwater settings could have on health and wellbeing. Fish tanks and displays are often associated with attempts at calming patients in doctors' surgeries and dental waiting rooms. This study

FIsh aquarium at Mumbai’s Taraporewala

has, for the first time, provided robust evidence that 'doses' of exposure to underwater settings could actually have a positive impact on people's wellbeing. The researchers conducted their study when the UK National Marine Aquarium refurbished one of its main exhibits - in a large 550,000 litre tank and began a phased introduction of different fish species. The researchers were able to assess the mood, heart rate and blood pressure of study participants in precisely the same setting as fish numbers in the exhibit

gradually increased. While large public aquariums typically focus on their educational mission, the study suggests they could offer a number of previously undiscovered benefits. In times of higher work stress and crowded urban living, perhaps aquariums can step in and provide an oasis of calm and relaxation. The research findings have shown improvements for health and well-being in highly managed settings, providing an exciting possibility for people who aren't able to access outdoor natural environments.

The Union government has provided Rs.48,000 crore for the project. n the third of AC-DC conversion, the Harbour line will be converted from 15000 Volts to 25000 Volts by the end of 2016. The work for AC-DC conversion on Harbour Line has alreadystarted. With the hurdles being from speed restrictions by the Safety Commissioner of railways, the Central Railway is positive about doing the ACDC conversion. Amitabh Ojha, Divisional Railway Manager, said, “The study and process of the conversion of the AC-DC of the Harbour line has already been started. The actual work will begin next year and will be completed by the end of 2016. The third phase of the AC-DC conversion will be completed at the set target. The restrictions of the speed

and other hurdles will come at a later stage before that we start with the testing and are positive to finish the work by the next year end.” The benefits of AC-DC conversion would change the network from AC-DC to increase the speed of the trains upto100 kmph, minimise train failures, long-distance

trains will save time as they don't have to switch from DC to AC while exiting Central Railway's Mumbai network and there will be less pollution due to less emission, energy is regenerated and technically, this is a great advantage. aroosa.ahmed@afternoondc.in

Suspend obstructing members till end of Parl session: Athawale R

ajya Sabha MP Ramdas Athawale yesterday demanded that all those not allowing Parliament to function smoothly should be suspended till the end of the session. His comments come on a day when Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan suspended 25 Congress MPs for five days for "persistently, wilfully obstructing" the House. "All those MPs who are not allowing Parliament to function smoothly should be suspended till the current session ends and they should also not be given their allowance. Merely suspending them for five days will not work. It is unfortunate that they (the opposition) are not even ready for a debate before asking for the resignation of ministers," Athawale, president of RPI(A) told reporters here. Mahajan 'named' (identifying for action) the 25 Congress members who were carrying placards and shout-

ing slogans in the Well while demanding resignation of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje over Lalit Modi row and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan over Vyapam scam. Athawale further said the Republican Party of India Athawale RPI (A) will hold an equality programme on August 11 at Delhi on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar and that BJP President Amit Shah has been invited to inaugurate the

event. "We have also invited Nitin Gadkari, Ramvilas Paswan, Anant Geete, Thawar Chand Gehlot and Kiren Rijiju for the event. Since it is Dr Ambedkar's 125th birth anniversary, the RPI (A) will be holding 125 programmes across the country in the coming year," he said. Athawale further said he has not been made a part of the 19-member national committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to commemorate Ambedkar's anniversary throughout the year because he was "busy". However, he added that he was not busy enough to accept a ministerial berth at the Centre. "I had not taken a bungalow in Delhi before, in the hope that I would be getting the ministerial berth that I was promised. Now, others have taken bungalows. I have written a letter to PM Modi in this regard," Athawale said.

escribing freedom fighter Nana Patil as a man who jolted the British rule in the country, Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray today announced that his party will build a befitting memorial for the independence activist. "When I accepted the invite to be a part of this event, someone asked me Nana Patil was a communist and Shiv Sena is against communists. I told him, yes, we are against communists. But,

The exhibition which started on July 29 will go on till August 24, 2015 including August 15 and all Sundays at the Sunderbai Hall, opposite SNDT College, behind Income Tax building, Churchgate. An official said, “Damji Nishar’s vision is similar to our well known Dhirubhai Ambani who’s dream was to see mobile phone in each and every hand so he reduced the cost of phone without thinking of his profit. In the same manner Damji Nishar has reduced book cost to a great extent in order to give knowledge and wisdom to India. He said that he will spread the word of wisdom to all parts of the world. In the near future Dubai and Middle East will witness book exhibitions and a chain of stores. The price war in the book segment is witnessed

However, Damji Bhai offers a competitive price than the on-line shopping of books. Ashish Book Centre specialized in conducting Book exhibition at educational institutions like Schools and Colleges in all parts of India apart from the regular and larger book exhibition from time to time.” The book centre have successfully held book exhibitions at more than 500 educational institutions in Mumbai. Besides educational exhibition at various locations, they have also organised 250 personnel exhibition and this will be the 261st exhibition of its kind. “Book lovers can explore their mind, can get everything. Books are available in three languages Hindi, Marathi, English. Children will be thrilled to see the mind – blowing colourful collection of books for them and

parents alike. The interesting part of the exhibition is the lowest price which attracts school and college libraries. Even the minimal budget permits you to buy more books than you can otherwise imagine. The exhibition has also been organised in other major cities of Baroda in Gujarat and in Mumbai,” the official said. Damji Nishar, proprietor of Ashish Book Centre, said, “The point in organising such a fair is not from a business point of view. Such exhibitions are more like a mission to spread the word of knowledge and inculcate reading among individuals of the world, especially, the young readers in India towards successful endeavours and help the upcoming young business community to get a grip of highly competitive environment and create new magic mantra of setting up new business houses using the technology.”

this man (Patil) understood that the British will not leave the country only by Swaraj and peaceful means and they need to be given a jolt, which he did," Uddhav told PTI. He was addressing a gathering here on the 115th birth anniversary of Patil, who was popularly known as 'Krantisinha' (revolutionary lion). Thackeray further described Patil, who was a CPI MP from Satara, as a man

who lived for the poor and dedicated his life for the country. "I do not care if he was a communist. What is more important is that he was a freedom fighter. Today it is our government at the Centre and in the state. We also have hold over the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). We will construct a befitting memorial for Nanasaheb in Mumbai that will make the whole country proud," he said.

Speaker acts at last S

peaker of parliament Sumitra Mahajan has done it at last. For two weeks, she patiently put up with the noisy attempt by members of the opposition to create ruckus in the house. She kept pleading with them to observe the rules of the house. She told them not to stop the work of the parliament. Members of the opposition came to the well of the house and kept shouting slogans. What’s worse, they brought posters which they waved even as they were yelling from the well of the house. The speaker put up with all this unparliamentary behaviour. Finally she must have thought enough was enough and decided to suspend the members. This has resulted in a strong reaction among the leaders of the opposition parties but the tough action by the speaker might make them behave better. Chances are parliament will function and important bills might be passed. It will not be a surprise if finally parliament will function without the opposition parties. They know now they have to behave properly and abide by parliamentary rules. The tough action by the speaker has sent a message to them. There will no more, hopefully, waving of posters right in front of the speaker. Even simple rules of the house were not being observed: For instance, when the speaker is standing, all members have to be seated. For the last two weeks, opposition parties converted parliament into a market place. Only ten more days are left before the end of the session and now that trouble makers are out, there is expectation that normalcy will be completedly restored.

ASHMIR has changed beyond recognition. In less than five years when I visited Srinagar last, the valley has become visibly anti-India. This does not mean that it has become pro-Pakistan, although some green flags fly in the interiors of Srinagar. What it really means is that the alienation, which was perceptible even earlier, has changed into resentment. However, the sunny sides like the Dal Lake and its bundh (bank) are as normal as they used to be. Tourists drive straight from the airport to the sites and are oblivious to the fact that the interior is the scene of militants who still lob grenades. I was in Srinagar when violence took place and some grenades were thrown in the interior of the town. An invitation by an organisation of Kashmiri journalists took me to Srinagar. A few other journalists from Delhi were also among the invitees. Strikingly, no journalist from Jammu was present. Of course, none had been invited.

faces when I said in my speech that the Muslims in India would have a hard time if the demand for an independent Kashmir was ever acceded. The Hindus would argue that if even after 70 years of being part of India the Kashmiri Muslims wanted independence, what is the guarantee about the loyalty of some 16 crores Muslims in India? The argument that India could not jeopardize its secular system by making Kashmir a separate country, which would be 98 per cent Muslims, was not even entertained at the conference. “Your Muslims are your problem,” was more or less the counter argument. I recall a similar reaction when after the formation of Pakistan I told its Foreign Minister Abdul Sattar that the Muslims in India—they were more than those at that time in Pakistan—were paying the price for the creation

Real intention is to join Pakistan The Kashmiris’ protest, more or less peaceful, is Islamic in tone and tenor. But it seems as if it is a way of expression, not the content. The content is that the Kashmiris want a country of their own. Most people in India suspect that an independent Kashmir is only a bogey. The real intention of the Kashmiris is to join Pakistan. But I do not agree with this inference. The very idea of independence looks more like a dream and it has swept the Kashmiris off their feet. If it ever becomes a reality, which is impossible, even the staunch supporters of integration with Pakistan will jettison their agenda and join the ranks of independence seekers. The sequence of events reminds me of Quaid e Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah’s way of thinking. He raised the demand for Pakistan as a bargaining counter to get the maximum concessions for Muslims in a country where the Hindus were bound to be in a preponderant majority. However, when he found a resounding response among the Muslims he came to own the demand for Pakistan, a homeland for the Muslims. Shaky in his belief in the beginning, he came to be its sole spokesman. Therefore, there should be no doubt about the real desire of Kashmiris. I could see angry

BETWEEN THE LINES Kuldip Nayar of Pakistan. He said that they had to make ‘sacrifices’ for a Muslim country, Pakistan, to take shape. What has disappointed me the most was the disappearance of grey area in Kashmir, which was visible till a couple of years ago. The stances have hardened so much so that even social contacts between Muslims and Hindus have got snapped. I am sorry to bring in a personal example. In the past, Yasin Malik would invite me to his house for dinner and conduct me to his house through the labyrinth of lanes. True, he has turned what is called a ‘separatist’. But I vainly waited for a word from him. I do not believe that he did not know about my presence in Srinagar. The Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front he heads has posted his men at the airport to know who comes from India and when. Yasin Malik gets

the “separatists” feedback. I had Yasin’s fast unto death broken on the condition that I would personally conduct a probe into human rights violations by the Indian security forces. He agreed to my supervision instead of the Amnesty International probe. We produced a report and found Yasin’s allegations mostly correct. The report was quoted widely by Pakistan to the embarrassment of Indian government. True, Yasin says that he is not an Indian. But our relationship was not on the basis of nationality. Can bitterness snap even personal bonds? Should I presume that I wrongly assumed certain things and that personal relations have no meaning in the face of political exigencies.

In the midst of challenges To cite another example of how personal relationships are pushed into the background for political purposes, another Kashmiri leader Shabir Shah is changed person today. He was like my chela (disciple). He was then pro-India. He has changed into a staunch opponent. Yet, I do not know why personal relations should die. Is it the price that I have to pay for a change in Shabir’s ideas? Kashmir, no doubt, requires attention, especially for those who believe in a secular and democratic India. No amount of opposition should swerve them from their commitment. If they change, it means that their earlier stance was only a façade. This holds good for the entire India. We are in the midst of challenges to the very idea, propounded by Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, who won us freedom. It pains me to see that some voices have begun to appreciate the ideas of Naturam Godse, who killed the Mahatma. Were India to question its ethos, the Muslim-dominated Kashmir would feel insecure. A Kashmiri Muslim engineer, who dropped me at the airport, told how he was suspect even at a liberal place like Bangalore and harassed by the police. Parties have reduced politics to the identification on the basis of caste and religion. People should assert themselves through liberal organizations or leaders and ensure that the poison of religion and caste does not spread. If the nation fails, Kashmir and many other parts of India may flounder in the muddy waters of religion. The country is on trial.

Now, is there a spiritual essence in man? P

lease consider the implications. All that is spiritual is in essence timeless, it is eternal. Surely, if that is so, the timeless, the eternal is beyond birth and death it is beyond time and space. So, you need not worry about things that are beyond time. It is not your concern. If it is timeless, if it is eternal, it is birthless and deathless, it has no time. If it has no time, it means there is no continuity; then why do you hold on to it? If it is timeless, it would not be continuous. But to you it is of time, because you cling to it. Therefore, it is not timeless. Therefore it is not spiritual in essence; because you have created it, therefore you cling to it. If it were real, it would be beyond your control. If it is true, you do not know it and, as I said before, if you know it, it is not true, and yet you cling to it. You say that there is a spiritual essence, which is the I, and that it continues, and at the same time you say it is timeless. So you have to understand the problem of continuity, which implies death, in order to know whether there is a spiritual entity or not. You have to understand death, which means you have to understand the whole problem of continuity. What continues in our everyday life? Memory through your own continuity,

through your family, your belief; and as we seek continuity, psychological and physiological, we are afraid of death. Therefore, we want continuity. If continuity of this physical existence is denied us, we seek continuity in what we call `God.' Therefore, when we talk of reincarnation, we actually seek continuity. 24 Now, what is it that continues? You, that is, your thinking, your memories, your day to

MATTER & SPIRIT day experiences. I identify myself with my memories, my property, my family, my beliefs and I continue and I want to be sure that that which continues, goes on. Therefore, I do not want to die, yet I know that I am going to die. So, how can I find continuity? Therefore, my problem is not to discover the truth about reincarnation, but to ensure my continuity. What is it which we say continues? What is that to which we hold on so desperately, so fearfully, so anxiously? Are they not memories? Sirs, remove your memories, and where are you? And those memories are given life by constant accumulation and by constant rec-

ollection. Memory in itself has no substance, no vitality. The moment I say `I remember' I am identifying myself with the past. That is, as long as a man who is the result of the past, is concerned with the results of the past, there must be continuity. And what happens to that which continues. Nothing, for it is only a habit. Habit is the only thing that can continue, and to which you give life from time to time. So, the thing which continues is memory, a dead thing to which you give life, which means that through a series of habits, accumulations and idiosyncrasies, the experiences are translated to produce all that you wish to have continued. Moreover, that which continues decays. That which is continuous is non-creative. So, this is what is principally involved in the question of reincarnation and this is the truth of it; not what a man says about it that it is a fact. If we really go into it, if we are aware of its significance, we will find that, that which is spiritual is timeless and therefore beyond our reach and therefore beyond continuity; for continuity is time - yesterday, today and tomorrow. — J Krishnamurti

Kohli stamps his authority KOHLI the man of few words is opening his mind as he is going to lead a full fledged tour to Sri Lanka. He would like to stamp his authority after the retirement of MS Dhoni from the Test side. Even though bowling is the weakest link in the Indian Team, it was the batting that let the side down on many occasions and make them to fight back to the wall with the threat of follow-on and innings defeats. So it is time to set the house in order and make strategic changes in batting line up to push the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin up in the order and fill in vacuum created in the absence Dhoni in the middle order. The absence of an all-rounder in the side is felt for a very long time and the promotion of the Tamil Nadu off-spinner can solve the problem. At the top of the order, it is time to give stability to batting by sending both Rohit and Rahane up in the order. YOUR editorial was excellent and it made the point very straight(Rules for road safety, dated 28th July, 15). Simply by passing resolution, if PM thinks, that the problem has been taken care of, he is simply deluding himself. It's a inconvenient fact that every year road casualties claim more than 1.5L people in India alone, yet we are only offering lip service to the problem. In what way Modi is proving different to the previous UPA Govt which also spoke very highly over the contagious issues but did nothing. There is need to understand the basic realities of road safeties and Govt must pursue a very strict line to reign in road accidents. Our road rules are only on papers and still people with hearing and seeing impairing can get licenses. Modi and Gadkari have to really walk the talk and do something on ground level to ensure that lives on roads are secure. People drive on arterial roads as if they are driving in formula one races with impunity.

Rahul’s baseless remark BEFORE labeling the RSS as cowards, the Congress crown prince should have checked up some of

the work done by the organization during the times of national crises: Lives of thousands of Hindus, especially women, were saved from genocide and dishonour at the times of the partition and the Hyderabad Action riots. During the aftermath of the flash floods at Morvi, it was only the Sangh volunteers who had the courage to enter the vast swamp for extricating the decaying bodies. Indefinite stay on execution

AS per state government report Maharashtra has 37 pending cases of executions. Though the President has rejected the mercy petitions of all these 37 convicts, including the oldest one of Gavit sisters, the cases are still stuck in technicalities. Some of them have even secured an indefinite stay on execution. While some have procured a stay, others are still exhausting legal options like — Hansraj Bhat, Borivali filing appeals and reviews. Innovative methods can be invented to give the educational system a fillip in the state by following the methods followed in other countries. Students are accustomed to Whats app and hence e mailing home work assignments will provide time for both students and the teacher to gather much needed momentum in completing the syllabus well before the examination and provide sufficient time for revising the particular subject. It is quite imperative to note that the students should move round with the web system and give them a fresh lease of life to lead in a knowledgeable world.

The overcrowded trains give commuters 'body massage' for free

WHEN first time train run between CST and Thane before 160 years, people were afraid to travel. The engine of the train was brought from England. On 16th April 1853 when train started from CST, people were so afraid to see the smoke from the engine that they ran away in jungle. Local citizens were paid and invited to sit in train. Some called it 'Ghost Train'. The Bombay (as it was called that time and now Mumbai) Governor was Lord Folkland so the Engine was called after his name. When first day the Governor and our Nana Shankar Seth (on whose name at present Nana Shankar Seth lane is there at present at Girgaum) travelled, and public holiday was declared. Three-boggy train started that time has become 15boggy train now. That time people were afraid get in because no were there in the boggy and now people are afraid because so many are there. Today only western railway running more than 1400 times. Will today's generation believe this? Or will that time return? — Yogesh R. Bhavasar, Dahisar

Bloat on… Afternoon Despatch & Courier

MUMBAI | TUESDAY, AUGUST 4, 2015

Excess fat anywhere on your body can be bad for your health, so why ignore the infamous belly fat?! Yamini Walia & Sara Shah give you the low-down on midriff issues

T

here is often nothing we can do about our body type, but belly fat can be the most alarming type of fat that there is, since it can increase our risk of suffering from severe illnesses. The problem with belly fat is that it is not limited to the extra layer of padding just below your skin; it also includes visceral fat, which lies deep inside your abdomen, surrounding your internal organs. We spoke to nutritionists Krushmi Chheda and Shilpa Mittal, as well as fitness expert Althea Shah, to find out more.

WHY ARE YOU BLOATING? To understand what bloating means, you need to know the reasons behind it. Krushmi tells us about a few: n Consuming too much refined sugar and food loaded with carbohydrates causes water retention and leads to bloating. n Eating a lot after a long gap between meals increases your body’s storing capacity rather than increasing energy expenditure. This results in slower metabolism.

n Intolerance to foods such as lactose in dairy products and gluten in wheat can also cause indigestion, which ultimately leads to bloating and discomfort. n A high intake of sodium or processed foods that are high in preservatives, can also increase water retention and bloating. n Consuming too much alcohol (alcohol is high in calories) can also lead to bloating.

LOWER BELLY WEIGHT OR BLOATING? According to Shilpa, there is a clearly defined difference between bloating and lower belly weight gain. She tells us, “Bloating occurs due to acidity, hormonal issues or constipation and may give your stomach a rounder, more swollen appearance that is similar to belly fat. You can distinguish a bloating issue by its symptoms — gas, an upset stomach or a change in bowel habits. These can be treated with a few simple lifestyle changes.”

When you talk about lower belly weight, you are referring to the fat that is present in your lower abdominal region. “Excess belly fat is unsightly and is also one the toughest types of fat to get rid of. Apart from this, belly fat is also one of the most dangerous kinds of fat and can lead to heart disease, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance and cancer,” Shilpa says. She also tells us that lower belly weight gain is developed because of years of bad eating habits, excessive alcohol intake and a lack of physical activity. “Another reason could be that as you get older, you experience a declining metabolic rate (seen in both men and women), which results in fat deposits in the region,” she explains. MUMBAI | TUESDAY, AUGUST 4, 2015

SURPRISE, SURPRISE! So, you aren’t bloated, and you are definitely eating more fruits and vegetables in a bid to stay healthy. But, the fat around your midriff refuses to budge! So, what are you doing wrong? We tell you about a few surprising reasons why losing the fat around your waistline is so tough.

usually found in meats and dairy, is also one of the reasons why you cannot lose weight, as this leads to an increase in visceral fat. Your body needs the monosaturated fats that are found in avocados, fish and nuts, which have anti-inflammatory effects on your body and won’t lead to belly fat gain.

You’re growing older

You aren’t challenging your body

Unfortunately, age isn’t just a number when it comes to your weight. The reason your belly fat won’t budge is because as you get older, your metabolism slows down. Your body’s natural ability to burn fat slows down too and a need for fewer calories arises. This affects women undergoing menopause in particular, because when hormones begin to shift, your body begins to hold on to the extra fat.

Yes, you may have lost some weight when you first started working out, but you need to challenge your body to see consistent results. Your body gets used to a routine and so, it’s best to switch it up and try to do as many different exercises as possible.

You’re eating the wrong fats >> Dairy and meat contain unsaturated fats that promote weight gain and bloating

TIPS TO BEAT BELLY FAT

Cardio exercise

Experts Krushmi and Shilpa help us out with a few useful tips to beat belly fat

If you have extra fat to lose near your stomach, you need to burn fat through cardiovascular exercise. If you exercise often, try high intensity interval training (HIIT) to help you burn more fat than moderate cardiovascular activities would. This is done by varying the power or intensity of your cardio workout or doing sprints several times in the session. This increases the calorie burn of your workout. The more calories burned, the more fat is lost. Interval training can be incorporated into any kind of cardio, including running, walking, cross training or even swimming.

You’re apple-shaped As absurd as this may sound, people with this body type have a tougher time dealing with belly fat than most. So, ask your trainer to suggest workouts that are better suited to your body type.

>> Fruits are your best bet to reduce bloating

n Consume small, frequent meals through the day. This keeps your metabolism active and prevents fat storage. These carbohydrate foods should be consumed with a protein and some essential fats. n Include proteins such as milk or eggs in all your meals. Consume dal sprouts, fish or chicken for lunch and dinner. Dry fruits and channa make for excellent snacking options. n Exercise five days a week, for 45 minutes, at a moderate intensity in order to burn fat. n Your total caloric intake during the day should match your energy expenditure in order to maintain a balance.

You could also try your hand at functional training, which involves using several core muscles. This will help to tone and stretch all the muscles of your core. Once the extra fat is gone, your abs will be more visible! Nobody will guess you ever had a beer belly! Before you pour yourself a cup and sit back to enjoy your daily dose of tea, Katha Nauriyal tells you how to sip on it the right way

t’s no secret that tea is good for your health. It’s packed with antioxidants and provides you with a little boost of energy every morning. While having a strong cup of tea immediately after a meal can interrupt and hamper smooth digestion, the same rule applies to drinking it when you’re hungry — it will cause stomach discomfort and will also lead to a loss of appetite.

A hot cup of tea is the perfect treat in this gloomy weather. But, if you drink it too hot, you can actually suffer from nosebleeds! Drinking very hot tea can rupture the blood vessels in your nose and while those who are prone to nosebleeds should cool any hot drink before drinking it, you need to be even more careful when it comes to tea. If you’ve already suffered from a nose bleed, avoid drinking tea for at least 24 hours. This will give your blood vessels enough time to settle down. Follow this tip if you’ve recently undergone a nasal treatment or surgery. Swilling tea two minutes after it has been prepared pushes you five times closer to the risk of cancer, as compared to drinking it within four minutes. Upasana Shukla Maheshwari, a nutritionist and diet planner, says, “Drinking extremely hot tea over a period of time can irritate your stomach and oesophageal lining.”

Selecting the right cup is just as crucial as picking the quality of your tea. If a vacuum or thermos cup is left with tea leaves for too long, it can cut down on its nutrient content and wreck your tea. While ceramic cups are the most popular picks, clay and earthen teacups cause less seepage and are natural heat retention materials that brew tea leaves instantly.

Brew to best Tea is best enjoyed when you brew its leaves properly. Most tea bags can be used at least two to three times with their flavours still intact. “If you boil tea leaves for too long, the polyphenyles and essential oils it contains start oxidising, reducing its nutritive value,” says Upasana. So, brew your tea leaves for a shorter period. If you let them sit in simmering water for too long, it will only kill the natural vitamins that are present in tea. “Remember that roadside chai is brewed for a long time, and this increases its tannin content. It also has copious amounts of sugar and milk that contribute to a heavier waistline,” Upasana adds.

1 Eat early For a problem that’s quite common, it’s surprising that the cause for side stitches remains a mystery. Although it is a subject difficult to research on there is a correlation between when you eat and stitches. If you’re prone to suffering from this problem, don’t eat anything for an hour before a run!

« Ten ways To:

Strengthen your core Since side stitches occur in your abdominal area, strengthening your core is an obvious step. Just 10 minutes of core exercises will go a long way in preventing the risk of suffering from a spasm when you’re running. Include crunches and planks in your workout routine.

Breathe deeply Since running is an intense exercise, it’s natural that you will be huffing and puffing within 1015 minutes (depending on your stamina) into your run. But, avoid the temptation to breathe too quickly. Shallow breathing upsets your diaphragm, which induces cramps. Breathe deeply and from your lower lungs — your stomach should rise and fall in tandem with your diaphragm. Remember that whether you’re prone to side stitches or not, this is the correct breathing technique to follow when you’re running.

4

3

Eat light Apart from eating early, you also need to ensure that you don’t stress your digestive system before a run. A full stomach increases your risk of suffering from a side stitch. You might also want to switch your workout timings — we recommend running in the morning, after eating a light breakfast.

Do you often bend over, clutching your side in agony as you exercise? The shooting pain that you feel just below your ribcage usually occurs when you’re running and is often ignored as a catch or interruption to your workout. Dev Goswami brings you simple tips that will help you prevent side stitches

When it happens Side stitches are a common effect of running and even if you take preventive measures, you may still end up suffering from them. If that happens, stop running immediately. Relieve the discomfort by applying pressure to the source of your pain. Remember also to perform a few stretches before you set off on your run again. If it happens again, it’s best to call your run off for the day and rest.

>> After getting a tattoo, make sure you take proper care of it as well

5

6

Seek medical opinion Side stitches can also be the result of an electrolyte imbalance in your body. They can usually be treated with sports drinks and/or a healthier diet. But, if the problem is chronic, you may need to sit down with a nutritionist and draw up a better diet plan. You may also be advised to take supplements to restore the balance of electrolytes in your body. Look for other symptoms, such as constant headaches and fatigue, which are indicative of this problem.

Take breaks There’s a reason why bending forwards after a particularly intense exercise feels so good — it relaxes your diaphragm. So, stop every 20 minutes or so and bend down to relax your abdominal muscles. But, remember to keep your break short — you don’t want your heart rate dropping too much.

9 Beginner’s (bad) luck Side stitches are often observed amongst new runners. The reasons for this range from improper posture and incorrect breathing, to pushing your body too much. Even if you have good form and breathe correctly, you can still suffer from a side stitch if you run at an intensity that your body isn’t ready for. So, start slowly and gradually increase your pace as you develop better stamina.

Warm up Warming up is important when you’re exercising, and it becomes even more crucial if you suffer from side stitches too often. Skipping a warmup will make your abdominal muscles rigid, which are more prone to developing a side stitch. So, stretch before you run — make sure to bend you body forwards and sideways in order to prep your abdominal muscles.

10

7

Drink when you need to You may believe as though gulping down a glass of water or an energy drink before you run will keep you hydrated for longer, reducing the number of breaks you need, but all that it will do is increase your chances of suffering from a side stitch. It’s best to carry a sports bottle on your run and take sips every now and then. This will keep you hydrated, and cut down your risk of developing a side stitch.

VINYASA FOR THE WIN No matter how many new trends baffle fitness enthusiasts, traditional yoga practices are unmatched in their effectiveness. Purva Indulkar tells you more about Vinyasa Yoga, a form of yoga that is forgotten, but shouldn’t be!

T

he Sanskrit term Vinyasa stands for connection and the practice of Vinyasa Yoga is based on fostering a link between your physical movements and breathing techniques. A simple Vinyasa Yoga session involves asanas that smoothly follow one another according to when you inhale or exhale. Due to its fixed rhythm and dance-like postures, it is often called Vinyasa Flow, or Flow. This type of yoga is beneficial to your body because it expels sweat and toxins, while re-energising it.

WHO SHOuld TRY IT?

A Vinyasa class is a good place for a beginner to start learning yoga. However, there are a variety of forms, each with different levels of difficulty. Whether you are looking to strengthen your muscles, shape up or simply relax, every Vinyasa Yoga class is different, depending on the exercises and instructor that you choose.

WHaT IT dOES fOR YOu

Vinyasa Yoga has several physiological benefits — it reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke and type-2 diabetes. Apart from contributing to weight loss and helping you to sleep better, here are few other reasons why you should try it: n It helps you get stronger The asanas that are a part of Vinyasa Yoga require standing,, arm-balancing, back-bends and inversions, which strengthen your muscles and test your body’s resistance capacity. What is jet lag? Our bodies have a 24-hour biological clock, known as the circadian rhythm. Circadian rhythms are physical, mental and behavioural changes that follow a 24-hour cycle (roughly) and primarily respond to the light and darkness in your surroundings. Crossing time zones disrupts your biological clock, which leads to jet lag.

How to beat jet lag? Even before you reach your destination, train your body to adjust to the time zone of your destination. Begin by sleeping one hour earlier or later than usual, depending on your destination. Once you’re on the plane, adjust your watch to the time of your destination and start thinking and planning your day accordingly.

Another tip to follow is to adjust light exposure. Our body’s circadian rhythm is influenced largely by the amount of light our body receives. So, make sure that you expose your body to the sun and soak in all the vitamin D that it needs. Performing about six to seven surya namaskars (sun salutations) under the sun can help you beat jet lag.

s soon as the city receives its first drop of rain, news articles begin to do the rounds. The dirty puddles are a breeding ground for diseases, the smallest junk food indulgence can lead to a horrible viral... there are several reasons to be quite alarmed during monsoons. From infamous water-borne diseases such as malaria, jaundice, cholera and dengue, to more obscure viral infections that sweep the city, all the major problems are focused on in detail. However, we often end up focusing on the bigger problems and neglect the smaller infections that lurk around us, which can lead to serious conditions if ignored. Find out what should be on your list of priorities this season.

>> If you notice redness on your skin, don’t scratch it with unclean hands. Instead, apply an anti-fungal skin ointment

EXPERT SPEAK To avoid monsoon ailments and infections, Dr. Madhuri Agarwal, a consultant dermatologist and aesthetic physician at Yavana Aesthetic Clinic, tells us that there are hardly any unknown tips. She thinks that people know how to avoid getting sick, but they simply ignore the first signs of any disease. “Skin infections such as bacterial, fungal and viral infections are extremely common during monsoon. Initial symptoms that signal inflammation of the skin are redness, pain and boils (in case of bacterial infections). For someone with a fungal infection, the symptoms would be itching and well-defined rashes, while for viral infections, such as herpes, it would include a burning sensation, redness or blisters.”To avoid this, she suggests wearing loose cotton clothes, making sure you don’t

Focus on your skin Getting drenched in the rain is one the major factors that contribute to skin infections. And, while you often can’t help but get drenched, if you don’t scrub off the dirt and grime the minute you get home, you’re simply aggravating the problem. At any time of the year, you can assume that these infections will go away on their own. However, during monsoon, dismissing the smallest rash or irritation is not something that we would recommend. Watch out for: n Itchy skin. n Red patches. n Unexpected rashes in places like your armpits and in between your toe nails. n Tenderness. n White patches on your skin. Solve it: n If you notice any of these symptoms, one of the first steps you should take is to apply an anti-fungal skin ointment on or around this infection. n In more serious cases, you may need to visit a dermatologist.

Dealing with eye infections Eye infections are generally caused by mild viruses and are usually cured on their own. This includes conjunctivitis, an inflammation of the conjunctiva (the thin clear tissue that lies over the white part of the eye and lines the inside of the eyelid) in your eye. What to watch out for: n Watery eyes. n A gritty feeling in your eyes. n Red or pink eyes. n Swollen eyelids. n Yellowish watery discharge from one or both your eyes. n Blood clots around your cornea. Solve it: n A basic precautionary measure to take is to

share clothes and/or other personal belongings (read our article below to see why you shouldn’t share your lip balm!) and drying your hair properly before tying it up in order to prevent the rise of scalp infections. When asked how often you should visit a doctor for routine check-ups, she says, “You don’t need to make numerous trips to the doctor. But, it’s a good idea for you to follow precautions. If you feel as though something is lingering for longer than it should, visit a dermatologist. It’s not wise to delay getting a check-up if something serious crops up.” She recommends getting a routine check-up at the beginning of the season in order to get a customised skincare routine and find out what preventive measures to follow through the monsoon.

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE We’re sure you’re all prepared for a rainy evening of indulgence with hot chai and pakoras, but given the current onslaught of rain, there are several other things that you need to prepare for first. Pooja Salvi gives you an updated guide to prevent some monsoon ailments

thoroughly wash your hands with soap before touching your eyes, lest you infect them by touching them with germ-filled hands. n Use less eye makeup. You don’t have to skip it completely, but sometimes products that are meant to stay out of the eye, make their way inside the eye due to moisture and can prove harmful. n Wash your eyes with cold water. n Have frequent, thorough baths.

Don’T forget your outer ear Also known as swimmer’s ear, this is an

infection in the outer ear canal that runs from your eardrum to the outside of your head. It is often caused by the water that is left in your ears after a session of swimming or bathing, creating a moist environment that induces bacterial growth. Swimmer’s ear infections are mild at first, but can get worse if your infection isn’t treated, or begins to spread.

Solve it: n Keep your ears dry after bathing or n n n

Watch out for: n Itching in your ear canal. n Slight redness inside your ear. n Mild discomfort when you touch your ear. n Fever.

n

swimming — tilt your head sideways and wait till the water makes its way out. Avoid putting foreign objects in your ears. Protect your ears from irritants by placing cotton balls in your ears when you’re applying hair spray or using hair colours. If you’ve recently suffered from an ear infection or had undergone ear surgery, consult your doctor before you go swimming. If any of these symptoms persist, visit a doctor to avoid any major damage.

« KNOW MORE IS SHARING CHAPSTICK BAD FOR YOU? Your mother may have warned you against sharing your lipstick, but is it really the same if your bestie uses your lip balm? Anindra Siqueira tells you what you need to know

S >> Sharing your chapstick with someone else can spread infectious diseases such as a cold or the flu

haring any personal product is often regarded as a pretty disgusting habit, though the more casual lot of us often label more particular people as germaphobes. But, is being so fussy about spreading germs such a bad thing? There’s no reason to panic, but sharing an innocent pot of lip balm (even if you’re just using your fingers to apply it) may be as bad as sharing a tube of lipstick! First off, lip balms can contain a variety of chemical ingredients, including camphor, cetyl alcohol, paraffin and parabens. Some variants even include fragrance, salicylic acid, phenols and sunscreen. Camphor, a waxy substance derived from plant sources, can be toxic, especially for small children. The fragrances used in lip balms are often synthetic, and are derived from petroleum, while paraffin is a petrochemical. Salicylic acid is an exfoliating agent; it strips away the top layers of your skin, leaving your lips exposed and prone to chapping. Parabens are used as

preservatives and can disrupt hormone function. If you must use a lip balm, ensure that it does not contain parabens, salicylic acid or aloe butter, which can irritate your lips. If you’re not convinced that your chapstick is not all it’s cracked up to be, or you have become habituated to using it, at least try not to loan it out to people. Sharing your chapstick — or even your lipstick, for that matter — can spread infectious diseases such as a cold, the flu, mononucleosis (commonly called mono) and herpes — HSV-1 for the more technically inclined, which is less dangerous and a variety of the alarming diseases. You can even pass on strains of bacteria that infect or inflame gum tissue. So, if you find your lips getting dry as the weather changes, use a simple petroleum jelly product; it keeps your lips moist and staves off chapping. Don’t be too alarmed by all this talk of infectious disease, but do stick to using your own lip balm or chapstick in order to stay safe.

Please suggest a few measures that I can take to maintain healthy skin when I’m travelling. — Deepika mehra, powai Dear Deepika, It’s not just a change in the air, but also food and water that can damage your skin. So, it’s important to be extra careful when you’re travelling. Instead of relying solely on water to keep you hydrated, eat fresh fruits whenever you get a chance to. If you’re heading to the beach or a place that has a hot climate, make sure you apply plenty of sunscreen. Just because you’re on holiday doesn’t mean that you can skip your daily skincare routine of cleansing, toning and moisturising. If you’re worried about your skincare products leaking in your luggage, store them in a zip lock bag. Even if you’ve spent the entire day sightseeing and are exhausted, never go straight to bed without removing all your makeup completely.

>> Straightening your hair can damage its natural texture Dear Barbara, I straightened my hair a few weeks ago. I have curly hair, but I got it straightened just to try a new look. It looked great in the beginning, but now, my hair is back to being messy again. I followed the instructions that my stylist gave me and used all the products she recommended, but my hair refuses to stay in shape. I feel like I wasted money by undergoing the straightening process, because it didn’t have a prolonged impact. What should I do? Please help. — suhana sheikh, mumbra Dear suhana, You need to understand that by straightening your hair, you’re going against it’s natural texture. If straightening didn’t work, maybe it’s time you embraced your hair the way it is instead of trying to change it. If you’re adamant about straightening it, go for a heatless, natural process that will keep your hair straight for a day. If you use chemical products and heat styling tools too often to force your hair to stay straight, it will only cause damage. Get a haircut that has less volume and doesn’t bunch around your neck in order to avoid the ballooning of your curls.

adage. Sleep helps your body and skin to heal and repair themselves. So, it’s important to get enough sleep in order to counteract the damage that your skin undergoes during the day. In fact, moisturisation and good sleep go handin-hand, with one complimenting the other’s role in your skin’s healing process.

use an eye cream The skin around your eyes is one of the first areas to exhibit the effects of ageing. And, using good quality eye cream will help prevent these signs from cropping up prematurely. Choose an eye cream that will infuse and replenish the moisture in the area under your eyes and keep crows feet at bay. You also need to invest in a pair of sunglasses, since squinting due to the bright sunlight can also cause wrinkles around your eyes.

importance of anti-ageing

Early BEauty Using anti-ageing cream the minute you see a wrinkle may be the norm, but Sara Shah suggests a few other skincare and beauty habits that work best when they’re adopted early

D

o you know why your grandmother always had good skin, even in her late 60s? Well, it was probably because she followed good skincare habits when she was young. While most women in their 30s usually adopt good skincare habits, there are some habits that work best if you start following them at an early age. We give you the lowdown.

Good cleansing

While there is no particular age at which your skin begins to show signs of ageing, it’s wise to start using anti-ageing products in your 20s. These usually contain retinol and vitamin C, which boost collagen and maintain the laxity of your skin.

use sunscreen This one is a no-brainier and we’re always stressing about how important sunscreen is for you. We don’t need to introduce you to the effects of the sun’s harmful UV rays. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and make sure to cover your neck and hands as well — they’re just as prone to sun damage as your face is.

Brush your hair Do you remember your mother brushing her hair before going to bed every night? And, she has great hair, doesn’t she? The reason we’re asking you to brush your hair more is because the natural oil in your scalp is the key to beautiful, shiny locks. This oil will also prevent frizz and delay the appearance of split ends. Brushing your hair at least 2-4 times every day (don’t overdo it!) will help to spread these oils.

skin is stripped off its natural oils during a cleansing and toning routine, so it’s important to use a good moisturiser in order to help your skin repair itself.

Beauty sleep exists! Okay, so you won’t be waking up looking drop dead gorgeous, but there is some truth to the beauty sleep

You generally realise the importance of cleansing, toning and moisturising only when you’re older, once the effects of ageing are quite visible on your skin. But, it’s important to adopt these habits in your early 20s. Following a proper nighttime cleansing routine is crucial to prevent the buildup of makeup. This also helps prevent breakouts, reduces acne formation and boosts collagen production. Toner will help you remove any residue that your cleanser skipped and will help to tighten your pores. Your

ike mentor like student. This was the conclusion one drew while listening to senior musician Paresh Naik at the Prabodhankar Thakre hall at Borivali (W). Naik is one the earliest pupils of the Mewati gharana maestro, Jasraj. Jasraj, although a traditional musician, has engaged himself in many experiments. Not all of them would meet with approval. Yet he goes ahead with what he feels to be right and musically viable. One of his experiments was 'Jasrangi' in which one male and one female singer sang on the same dais simultaneously in their respective pitches in two different ragas. Naik who is a devoted pupil of Jasraj performed a late afternoon concert. He sang appropriate ragas like 'Madhuvanti', 'Champakali' and 'Kalavati'. What was new

about his raga renditions was the accompaniment by Pratik Shah on the keyboard in addition to the wonderful harmonium support given by Prakash Vagal who is now a veteran in the field. Naik sang traditional compositions of the Mewati gharana as taught by his venerable guru. Tabla support was extended by

Bharat. 'Raag Rejoice', a new CD of this experimental music was also released on this occasion. Parthapratim Roy, a very competent sitarist belonging to the Maihar gharana, was in the city to give his recitals. His 'Ahir Lalit' was a serious presentation. This is a combination of 'Ahir Bhairav' and

'Lalit'. It is a special Maihar gharana raga. The blending of 'Ahir Bhairav' and 'Lalit' was seamless and intriguing. Asit Jana who provided tabla support to him in the programme is a leading pupil of the famous tabla maestro Anindo Chatterjee. He was in his elements in the gat and jhala portions.

of news and information. Bhagwat is at his night desk preparing for the next day’s edition when he receives the news that a building owned by builder Sanklecha has crashed and there have been some casualties and he is ready to file his copy but in walks

his old girlfriend Swapna (Girija Oak Godbole) for whom Bhagwat still carries a torch and now she is the PRO for Sanklecha who has to “manage” the news stories about the crash and she requests Bhagwat to drop the story as the other newspapers have done. Bhagwat is in a quandary but prefers to talk to Girija about their olden memories and even go out for a beer but the journalist in Bhagwat can’t be silent as he has already sent an intern (Rohit Haldikar) to get more details about the crash. So what does he do next? That is the whole gist of the play which also throws light on today’s paid news syndrome and how the professional ethics in journalism have been lowered recently. The performances by Jitendra

Joshi and Girija Oak Godbole are the highlights of the play, especially Jitendra who has portrayed the conflict in his character very well. Girija Oak Godbole tries hard to give her character the right amount of maturity and sensitivity. Rohit Haldikar is earnest. The art direction by Pradeep Mulye is fantastic and he has created a newsroom perfectly with all the props in the right place and the right effect. The lighting too is superb. Director Kshitij Patwardhan has done a brilliant job of the realistic story. See this play for its burning issue and good performances.

I

n a smart recovery, the manufacturing sector grew at its fastest pace in six months in July on increased export order flows, but hiring remained sluggish, a monthly survey showed yesterday. The data came a day before RBI's scheduled monetary policy review meeting, where the central bank is widely expected to keep its policy rates unchanged. However, some analysts including those at Moody's Analytics expect a rate cut as a sustained recovery is yet to be seen in manufacturing sector. The Nikkei India Manufacturing PMI -- a composite indicator of manufacturing sector performance -- rose to 52.7 in July from 51.3 in June, logging a six-month high, indicating an improvement in business conditions. A figure above 50

represents expansion while one below means contraction. As per the survey, growth of new export business orders accelerated in July to reach its highest level in five months. However, the outstanding business orders got accumulated for the second month running. "Growth in India's manufacturing economy rebounded in July, with PMI rising since the prior month. This reflects stronger increases of new orders and output. Furthermore, the sector was boosted by the quickest expansion in export orders since February," said Pollyanna De Lima, Economist at Markit, which compiles the data. Despite the uptick in growth, manufacturers continued to cut down workforce in July. Around 96% of respondents reported no change in staff strength from the levels in the prior month.

"Although the latest data suggest that the manufacturing upturn gained traction, worries regarding the labour market persist," Lima said, adding that "continued job shedding highlights the concern felt by businesses towards the outlook, with firms failing to increase workforce numbers to any great extent since early 2014". On prices, the survey said the rate of inflation was only marginal and well below the series long-run trend. "While this is a generally positive set of data, upcoming PMI data releases will indicate whether the manufacturing sector can sustain this momentum," Lima said. RBI, in its last policy review on June 2, had cut the repo rate by 0.25% for the third time this year to spur investment and growth, but hinted that there may not be any more cuts in the near term.

MF Inflow In Equity Markets Drop 58% In July By A Business Reporter

M

utual fund managers have pumped in a little over Rs 4,300 crore in the equity markets in July, a slump of 58% from the preceding month, primarily on account of subdued corporate earnings and higher valuation. In comparison, mutual fund reported a net inflow of nearly Rs 31,000 crore in the debt markets last month. Industry insiders analysts attributed the decline in equity investments to higher valuation, subdued corporate earnings and Greek crisis. However, they remain optimistic about the equities in the long run. As per a data released by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), mutual fund managers invested a net sum of Rs 4,339 crore last month, as compared to Rs 10,325 pumped in June.

Cooperating With Indian Authorities On Swiss A/C Probe, Says HSBC By A Business Reporter

F

acing a probe by Indian authorities into accounts held by Indians in Switzerland, global banking giant HSBC yesterday said it is cooperating with the authorities. The bank also disclosed a number of other investigations in various countries for "alleged tax evasion, money laundering and unlawful cross-border banking solicitation" and said it is cooperating with the relevant authorities in each of the ongoing matters. "In February 2015, a public prosecutor in Switzerland commenced an investigation of HSBC Swiss Private Bank, and the Indian tax authority issued a summons and request for information to an HSBC company in India," the bank said in its interim report 2015. The public prosecutor's investigation in Switzerland was closed in June 2015, the bank said, while adding that "with respect to each of these ongoing matters, HSBC is cooperating with the relevant authorities". It said, "There are many factors that may affect the range of outcomes, and the resulting financial impact, of these investigations and reviews, which could be significant." A leaked list of over one lakh account holders in HSBC's Swiss

banking unit, including 1,195 Indians, became public early this year, prompting authorities in India and many other countries to launch their investigations to ascertain whether these accounts had illicit money stashed abroad, reports PTI. Separately, the UK-based bank said it has also received "subpoenas and requests for information" from the US and other authorities including with respect to US-based clients of an HSBC company in India. This case relates to some NRIs facing investigation in the US for alleged violation of the American tax laws. On Swiss unit-related tax matters, HSBC said, "Various tax administration, regulatory and law enforcement authorities around the world, including in Belgium, France, Argentina and India, are conducting investigations and reviews of HSBC Swiss Private Bank in connection with allegations of tax evasion or tax fraud, money laundering and unlawful crossborder banking solicitation." It further said that "in light of the recent media attention regarding these matters, it is possible that other tax administration, regulatory or law enforcement authorities will also initiate or enlarge similar investigations or regulatory proceedings.

Among the six Indians, who fought alongside the ISIS and got killed were three Indian Mujahideen terrorists, including Sultan Ajmer Shah and Bada Sajid, who had joined its ranks after being in Pakistan, two from Maharashtra and one from Telangana. Quoting intelligence inputs, sources said, except for one, none of the six other Indians currently with ISIS are allowed to go for combat duty and mostly assist the fighters, serving as cooks,

drivers and helpers. The only Indian, who has been given an assault rifle and is deployed for combat, hails from Mumbai outskirts Kalyan, they said. So far, 17 young men, mostly from Telangana, have been prevented from travelling to Syria, ostensibly to join ISIS. The issue of radicalised Indian youths joining ISIS had figured prominently during a meeting of top security experts here on Saturday. Chaired by Union Home

India-Pak NSA talks: India to take up Gurdaspur terror attack N

EW DELHI: India will submit to Pakistan evidence that the three terrorists who carried out attacks in Gurdaspur had come from across the border during the proposed National Security Advisorlevel talks here later this month.

Sources privy to the development said the Indian side could also bring up terror cases related to wanted gangster and mastermind of 1993 Mumbai blasts Dawood Ibrahim during the meeting, which was agreed to at the meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif in Ufa in Russia last month. "Everything will be on table. The agencies are collecting evidence in the case of the Gurdaspur terror attack. The soil samples found in the boots of the three killed terrorists have been sent for investigation," they said. Sources added the evidence in connection with the Gurdaspur attack is still being collected and collated by the agencies to prepare "solid proof" to prove the cross-border conspiracy that

killed seven persons--three civilians, Superintendent of Police (Detective), Baljit Singh, a Punjab provincial service officer and three home guards. They said a dossier will also be prepared and handed over to the other side during the meeting, like the Indian case against 26/11 Mumbai attack mastermind and LeT commander Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi who is now out on bail. Similar proof against terror mastermind Hafiz Saeed, who India has time and again said has been roaming freely in the neighbouring country, will be shared with Pakistan across the table, they said. They said all other matters pertaining to cross-border terror cases would be brought on the table, backed by "water-tight" evidence.

Secretary L C Goyal, the meeting of DGPs and Home Secretaries of 12 states, formulated a strategy on how to prevent the youth from getting attracted to radical ideologies propagated by organisations like the ISIS. The proposed steps included involving community elders in dissuading the young people from joining such outfits, monitoring of radical social media platforms and real-time sharing of information among security agencies.

Counter-radicalisation efforts would include counselling the vulnerable youths. Maharashtra and Telangana have already put in place a model for dealing with ISIS-related cases. While there have been arrests in some cases, agencies realised that arrest should not be the first option. Monitoring of social media has, meanwhile, begun, sources said, adding efforts would be made to gain confidence of the Muslim community.

Varsity students intensify stir; demand HRD ministry remove VC P

UDUCHERRY: Intensifying their week old agitation, students of Pondicherry University on Monday demanded the HRD Ministry should immediately remove Vice Chancellor Chandra Krishnamoorthy, alleging there has been "administrative chaos" and "violation of human rights". Student leaders, who addressed protestors, said their stir was to draw the attention of the HRD Ministry to their demand and initiate steps to remove the VC. The agitation was launched by 'Pondicherry University Students Movement', who have drawn up a charter of demands. They alleged that there was lack of adequate hostels, no drinking water and also other amenities. Students also alleged that

there was "administrative chaos" and "violation of human rights". Police were deployed in strength at the University to ensure there was no untoward situation. Leaders of the opposition Congress like V Vaithilingam, former Education Minister M O H F Shahjahan and Secretary of National Students Union of India S Sarath have expressed solidarity with the students by sitting along with them for a while and then addressing them. Namassivayam, a PCC leader, said the students' demands were justified and should be conceded immediately. He said he had been keeping AICC Vice President Rahul Gandhi apprised of the developments and urged him to take up their demands with the Centre. He also objected to last

week's lathicharge of students, in which a number of students were reportedly injured and demanded that the government take action against the police officers responsible. He also alleged that police were filing false cases against students and those supporting their grievances and said these should be withdrawn. NSUI National Secretary S Sarath and former Education Minister Shah Jahan also addressed the students and promised them that their grievances would be settled soon. A delegation of the local unit of BJP, led by its General Secretary V Swaminathan addressed the students and pledged support to them. University staff could not proceed on their two wheelers inside the premises and had to park their vehicles outside.

There are reports that a flash flood has destroyed a village in Leh in Jammu and Kashmir. Meanwhile, with fresh discharge of water from the barrages and continuing high tide, the flood situation in south Bengal remained grim on Monday as the death toll mounted to 69 while 3.63 lakh people took shelter in 2,213 relief camps in 12 affected districts. Twenty-one fresh deaths were reported yesterday from the affected districts, taking the toll to 69, Disaster Management Department sources said adding that incidents lightening, wall collapse, electrocution, snake bite and drowning were to blame for the fatalities. "Altogether 2,213 relief camps have been set up to shelter over 3.63 lakh marooned people and 461 medical camps opened," the sources said adding that the total number of affected people was nearly 52 lakh.

Govt signs peace accord with NSCN(IM), PM says ‘historic’ N

EW DELHI: With an aim of ending insurgency in Nagaland, government on Monday signed an accord with key outfit NSCN(IM) which Prime Minister Narendra Modi described as a 'historic' step to usher in peace in the state. The pact was signed in the presence of the Prime Minister, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval by the outfit's leader T Muivah and government's interlocutor R.N. Ravi at the PM's residence here. The signing of the pact is the culmination of over 80 rounds of negotiations that spanned 16 years with first breakthrough in 1997 when ceasefire agreement was sealed. While the National Socialist

Council of Nagaland (IsaacMuivah) is the biggest Naga rebel group which has been maintaining the ceasefire, another faction led by S.S. Khaplang continues to indulge in violence and was believed to be behind the deadly attack on army in Manipur in June that left 18 soldiers dead and 18 injured. It was not immediately clear whether the agreement meets the main demand of NSCN(IM) for integration of all Naga-inhabited areas in the North East across Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. Details and execution plan within this framework agreement will be released shortly, official sources said after the accord in which Doval played the central role.

OLKATA: A three-year-old child was injured when a crude bomb exploded inside a sewerage pipe kept beside a road in Tala Park area of the city this morning. "A toddler sustained injury in the explosion and has been taken to state-run R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. Doctors are treating him," a senior police officer said. The incident happened at around 9.25 AM when the crude bomb exploded inside a pipe kept by the side of the road at the crossing of Tarashankar Sarani and Khelat Babu Lane in Tala Police Station area.

Murshidabad, Bankura and Birbhum were the other badly affected regions, he said. "The situation remained unchanged in the affected districts mainly because of high tide and release of water from different barrages. However, the situation is likely to improve after the discharge of water from the barrages is controlled," Rajib Banerjee said. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reviewed the latest flood situation in a meeting with senior officials at the state secretariat. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had spoken to the CM over phone enquiring about the latest flood situation. The chief minister, who stayed at the state secretariat overnight to personally monitor the flood situation, yesterday visited the affected areas at Asoknagar and Habra in

North 24-Parganas district and distributed relief materials among the marooned. Banerjee instructed a number of ministers and senior officials to visit the affected areas and supervise relief arrangement. She said there should not be any politics in the distribution of relief and promised that her government would extend all help, asking opposition parties not to indulge in politics over relief distribution. The Chief Minister had earlier instructed the officials to monitor the situation round-the-clock and take prompt appropriate steps. Meanwhile, an IMD Kolkata issued a release hinting at improved weather condition in South Bengal. However, heavy rain would likely to occur at isolated places over subHimalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.

Gurdaspur: Sonia rakes up Modi’s attack on Manmohan during 26/11 N

EW DELHI: Under attack from BJP for stalling a debate in Parliament on the Gurdaspur incident, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Monday sought to remind the party of Narendra Modi's attack on the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the wake of the 26/11 terror strike in Mumbai. "I wish to say a word on the charge that we lack statesmanship because we have stalled a debate on the Gurdaspur tragedy. "I would like to remind those who have levelled this allegation at us about what happened on November 28th, 2008 when anti-terror op-

erations were underway in Mumbai," Gandhi told a meeting of the Congress Parliamentary Party. She said at that time, all of a sudden, the then chief minister of Gujarat appeared in the megapolis and instead of supporting the Prime Minister indulged in grandstanding and criticised him. "Was this statesmanship?" she asked. "This is a heinous act of wanton violence. When faced with such an assault, regardless of our political differences we stand united as a nation. We salute those who have sacrificed their lives. Our sympathies are with the bereaved families," she added. Pics: PTI

FTII students hold protest at Jantar Mantar

FTII students agitate for the removal of the FTII Chairman Gajendra Chauhan at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Monday.

N

EW DELHI: Over 80 students of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) on Monday held a protest at Jantar Mantar against the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as the institute's chairman. The protest which had a backing of different student organisations

including National Students' Union Of India (NSUI) entered its 53rd day yesterday. "It has been more than 50 days that we have been protesting. So, our purpose of coming to Delhi is that we should be heard. We had written to leaders from various political parties requesting them to intervene and urge the government to revoke the appointments of 'unfit' people and to set up a transparent procedure for future appointments. Only Rahul Gandhi has replied and come forward," said a student protester. "Government is waging an ideological war against us. FTII will not bow to any political pressure. Government must initiate a dialogue," said another student. Congress MP Raj Babbar, JD(U) leader K C Tyagi yesterday also participated in the protest and backed the students.

SAYS SPONSORS BACKING BOARD MUMBAI | TUESDAY, AUGUST 4, 2015

ew Delhi: The BCCI's four-member working group, formed to study the Justice Lodha panel's verdict relating to the IPL 2013 corruption scandal, today met for the first time to discuss the way forward for the cash-rich league's next edition and said the sponsors were fully behind the Board. The Board had given the committee six weeks' time to draw up a roadmap for the IPL after the Justice Lodha committee suspended the owners of the Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals Gurunath Maiyappan and Raj Kundra while banning the franchises for two years last month. "We have started meeting all the stakeholders from today. Today the representatives of Yes Bank came and met the members of the working group. Yes Bank is one of our sponsors. Similarly we will meet other sponsors and also speak to them about how to make IPL 9 a success," IPL Governing Council Chairman Rajeev Shukla, who is

Rajeev Shukla, IPL Governing Council Chairman also heading the working group, said. After this round in Delhi, the working group will move to Mumbai. "In Mumbai we plan to meet at least four franchise owners. We have set the ball rolling. We have to discuss all the possibilities about new teams and future of players," he added.

Asked if the sponsors are wary because of the controversies surrounding the T20 tournament, he said "Absolutely not. Sponsors are fully behind us. They are bullish." On the contentious issue of conflict of interest, Shukla said, "Our president has also issued a statement. All required steps will be taken. Asked if the Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals will need to pay franchise fee during the two years that they are suspended, he said, "No, they don't need to pay anything. Neither do they pay anything to us nor do we have to pay anything to them. The working group comprises Shukla, BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur, treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry and IPL governing council member and former captain Sourav Ganguly, and will be assisted by Usha Nath Bannerjee, the Board's legal counsel. All of them were present in today's meeting." Asked about the working group's views on having two new teams for IPL, Shukla said, "We don't

Sydney: Relatives of Australian cricket legend Donald Bradman have revealed simmering tensions with a foundation that bears his name, disagreeing with the expansion of a museum celebrating his life. The Bradman Museum, in the cricketer's boyhood hometown of Bowral south of Sydney, became the Bradman Museum and International Cricket Hall of Fame in 2010, a move his family believe he would not have wanted. "He wanted (the Bradman Museum) to be a small local entity," his son John Bradman told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in a programme to air later Monday.

Olympians Gurbax, Joaquim to fight MHA elections M

umbai: The elections to the Mumbai Hockey Association (MHA) on August 12 will see Olympians Gurbax Singh Grewal and Joaquim Carvalho contesting for top posts to regain their positions in the city hockey officialdom. "Gurbax Singh (1968 Olympian) has filed his nomination for the president's post, against Manga Singh Bakshi (the incumbent), while Joaquim (1984 Olympian) will contest against me for the honorary secretary's post," MHA secretary Ram Singh Rathor told PTI. Among the contestants for the one of the two vice president's posts is another Olympian and Carvalho's

ertswhile teammate, Merwyn Fernandis, who was part of the 1980 gold medal winning Indian team at the Moscow Games. Other internationals like Gavin Ferreira, also an Olympian, Raju Bagade and Ramesh Pillay are also con-

testing the elections from the players' side. The last date for withdrawals is August 8, Rathor informed. The players are fighting on the plank that hockey development has taken a back step at the MHA under the ruling group. But Rathor asked how some of the the players' group members, who had initiated steps to put a spanner in the extension of the ground's lease by the Maharashtra government, can now talk of developing hockey. "How can the same set of people, who had gone to the authorities to end the ground's lease, develop hockey without the ground," Rathor wondered.

around for the Beach Boys when he defeated Dhaval Kenia (+50) by a convincing 106-64 margin in the third frame. Later in the fourth, Vishal Gehani (+45), who had earlier lost the second frame on the black ball (84-79) to Arun Agrawal (+25), avenged that defeat as this time he held his nerves to snatch a 92-89 win also on the black ball to level the scores 2-all and force the decider. M

umbai: Defending champions Bombay Gymkhana proved their mettle while putting out MIG CC (Bandra) 2-0 to retain the inter-club title in the YonexMaharashtra State Masters Inter-Club badminton tournament at Matunga Gymkhana. Much was expected from MIG CC after their surprise 21 win over fancied Chembur Gymkhana in the semifinals. But it was off-day for MIG players as Jitesh Padukone and Mahesh Aras could do little right before Pramod Ahuja and Naval Kumar took the opener 21-15, 21-14. The second tie, however, was quite a thriller though scores suggest otherwise. Amol Shah and Ayaz Billawala were at their best as they quelled the challenge of Yogesh Padukone and Vilas Kuwala 21-18, 21-12. Earlier in the semifinals, Bombay Gymkhana survived some hiccups before they got the better of BKCP Andheri SC 2-1. Gautam Ashra and Pramod Ahuja put up fine show as they rallied from 11-19 in the first game before they prevailed over Ajay Shrivas-

tava/Himanshu Vaidya23-21, 21-10 to clinch the tie. They lost the next tie when Gautam Lad and Amol Shah were beaten by Rajat Moitra/Hayat Khan 21-14, 11-21, 16-21. However, their move to keep Ayaz Billawala and Shailesh Daga for the deciding tie paid off as the pair after some hiccups played fabulously to beat Manish Hadkar/Sanjeev Mahajan 23-21, 21-10. Similar was the case in MIG’s upset win. They took the first tie as Yogesh Padukone and Vilas Kuwale after dropping the first game took the next two against Sanket Shetty and P.M. Bala 19-21, 21-17, 21-19. But they lost the second tie when Milnd Ghate and Ajit Nair fell to the guiles of Mayur Tawade and Pradeep Iyengar 19-21, 21-11, 214-21. However, Jitesh Padukone and Mahesh Aras kept cool as they downed Vikrant Patwardhan and Sunil Wagh 22-20, 21-9. ondon: What the imminent Premier League season requires is a rivalry at the top, a battle between managers to take the stakes higher still. At Wembley on Sunday, the Community Shield suggested that a grudge match from the past continues to bubble over. It was made quite clear that time has not thawed relations between the managers of Arsenal and Chelsea, Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho. In the 12th year of their acquaintance, they again behaved like teenagers who cannot acknowledge each other's presence. With a 1-0 win, Wenger celebrated his 14th time lucky by finally beating Mourinho's Chelsea, though only in a glorified friendly, even if there was a glittering prize to be collected by the Gunners from the top of the Wembley steps. To follow the sequence of events that followed last season's curtain-raiser when Arsenal's team pose for a team picture with the trophy after the English Community Shield soccer match between Arsenal and Chelsea at Wembley Manchester City were beaten Stadium in London on Sunday. Arsenal won the match 1-0. Wenger is at the far right.

WENGER AND MOURINHO’S MUTUAL

ANTIPATHY WILL CONTINUE

3-0, Arsenal have a psychological fillip to play with. In February, Arsenal travelled to the Etihad and soundly beat Manuel Pellegrini's side 2-0 with a performance to suggest Wenger's team might at last challenge the Premier League's contenders. Between those two meetings, though, Arsenal's form was spasmodic, and this season, an opening sequence will be required that is better than the two wins from nine games with which Arsenal opened 2014-15 in the Premier League. Sept. 19, when Arsenal visit Stamford Bridge and Chelsea cannot be as expected to be Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho have always shared a history of duals.

Barcelona legend Xavi scores cracking free-kick on Al Sadd debut the Spanish genius Xavi IthisfHernandez had scored goal at the Nou Camp, 90,000 people would have gone crazy. In Qatar? Not so much.As one of the finest footballers of his generation, Xavi has spent years playing at the very highest level of football. The Spanish maestro was so good at his Barcelona peak, he became accustomed to playing in crazy atmospheres; stadiums turned into cauldrons of noise by thousands of crazed, passionate supporters. Now 35, Xavi recently decided to spend the next few years earning easy big bucksplaying out the last stages of his career for Al Sadd, in Qatar.

And judging by this clip which shows him scoring a belting, trademark free-kick on his Al Sadd debut - we can conclude two things. First, even in semi-retirement, Xavi is still good enough to be playing anywhere and second given that his goal was greeted by a crowd response similar to that you might hear at a school game, he might currently be missing the Nou Camp's matchday atmosphere.

as underpowered as they were at Wembley, will be the true test of the Gunners' credentials. Still, on Sunday at least, the excuses were left to Mourinho to deliver for a change. "The pitch was a disaster," he said. "The weather didn't help, too." However, the Portuguese's main reasoning took the form of jibing his opposite number by using the type of criticism he has long received as Chelsea's boss, and sometimes from Wenger. "The best team lost," said Mourinho, willfully ignoring the evidence of the previous 90 minutes. "The defensive team won, the team that

leaves their philosophy in the dressing room. They had 10 players behind the ball and played the second half with nine players in front of the box." Predictably, Wenger did not accept that verdict. Arsenal had simply replicated the approach that delivered them some decent results last season, while Alex OxladeChamberlain's first-half winner was the type of individual class he trusts his players to supply. "We abandoned nothing," he said. "We defended. Our game is based on togetherness and solidarity, on defending well and attacking well."

Goalkeeper has the enthusiasm of a 20-yearold: Julen Lopetegui

Veteran goalkeeper Iker Casillas has made an immediate impact at Porto following his much-publicised exit from Real Madrid

Porto coach Julen Lopetegui heaped praise on goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who has settled in seamlessly in Portugal. Casillas ended his 25year association with Real by signing a two-year contract with Porto last month and the Spain international has hit the ground running, helping the Portuguese giants to a 5-4 penalty shoot-out win over Valencia in a friendly on Saturday. The 34-yearold produced a fine save to deny Joao Cancelo as Porto trumped Valencia after 90 scoreless minutes in Cologne. Speaking afterwards, Lopetegui said, "He is a player that comes with experience. He has arrived at the club with the enthusiasm of a 20-yearold lad. He has come to a big club and we are all going to benefit from his enthusiasm." Casillas has made four appearances for Porto following his low-key departure from Madrid. The five-time La Liga champion and winner of three UEFA Champions League titles has kept three clean sheets in that period, against Valencia, Schalke and Duisburg. "I am very grateful to the fans. Now I will try and repay that love with more good performances and victories for Porto," Casillas added.
