This is the second meeting between Modi and Obama, who hosted a private dinner for the Indian Prime Minister on his arrival from New York. On Monday, Modi and Obama had met in an informal setting in Blue Room of the White House and shared their experiences after taking over as Prime Minister and the President respectively apart from discussing areas of cooperation in combating Ebola virus and the situation in war-torn Afghanistan.

BMC hospitals face medicine shortage 02

MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2014
The shortage is a result of the drug reaction case that happened in Bhabha hospital recently, after which the FDA stepped in and placing medicine orders has become difficult By Shwetha Kannan
W
hile the health of the women who had been affected by the adverse drug reaction at Bhabha hospital at Kurla, might be alright, the effect of the incident is still being seen in BMC hospitals whose schedules for ordering and receiving medicine stocks has gone for a toss resulting in a shortage of medicines and IV fluids at BMC-run hospitals. A case in point is the BMC-run Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital, commonly known as Sion Hospital which doesn't seem to have enough stock of even glucose bottles at the hospital and hence, relatives of patients at the hospital
65-year-old Sultana Ahmed Nabi Ansari with her daughter Shabana Ansari (left) at Sion hospital. are being asked to get glucose and other medicines from outside the hospital. Shabana Ansari, a resident of Shivaji Nagar at Govandi, got a dose of this shortage at Sion hospital. Shabana, whose 65-year-old mother Sultana Ahmed Nabi Ansari had been experiencing chills and fever for some time, was taken to
Sion hospital on Monday evening and was admitted in ward number 20 for investigations and treatment. “I was surprised when I was asked to buy glucose from outside because I was under the impression that basics like glucose will be available at the hospital. So I decided to find out what is happening. I started talking and inquiring with other pa-
tients and their families and I found out that they too have been buying glucose and other medicines from outside. When I asked the staff at the hospital about this, they admitted to this and said that they too are equally inconvenienced, due to this shortage and feel bad for the patients and their families,” said Shabana who is a social worker in Govandi. “Till now I have already purchased five bottles of glucose for my mother along with a few injections. So the expenses are not much. But this is because the investigations have just begun. What if the expenses start mounting up later? What is the point of coming to a BMC hospital and spending so much where treatment is supposed to be affordable?” added Shabana who also informed that she has not been told about reimbursement of any kind for the money she has spent on buying medicines from outside. Acknowledging the shortage of certain stocks at the hospital, Dr Avinash Supe, Dean, Sion hospital said, “We had the stock of IV fluid till August but as we were about to place orders for more stock, the ad-
verse drug reaction case at Bhabha hospital in Kurla happened. Then the FDA stepped in and orders could not be placed with the old vendor. We tried to do local purchase but the cost is six times more than what we get from our vendors and we can't continue doing that for long. We are trying our best to arrange for medicines. We have already placed more than 100 orders with the new vendor but it will take 37 days for the medicines to get to us. Some medicines have already started coming in, some are pending. The situation is more or less the same in all BMC hospitals right now.” When asked about a possible reimbursement for the patients, Dr Supe said, “No it is not possible because they are buying it at very high rates from outside.” shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

Cabbies, automen to be fined from today if meters are not recalibrated
On August 12, 2014, the Bombay High Court increased the auto rickshaw and taxi fares in the city by Rs 2. The minimum auto rickshaw and taxi fares are Rs.17 and Rs.21 respectively. The new fares came into existence from midnight on August 12. However, a division bench of Justices Abhay Oka and A S Chandurkar had also directed the state government to ensure that the hike will not be enforced until the meters have been recalibrated.
Thampy Kurain, Secretary, Auto rickshaw Union, said, “Almost 99 per cent meters of auto rickshaws have been recalibrated. If a vehicle is off the road because of an accident or withheld by the bank due to nonpayment of loan instalments, such vehicles will not be fined if they are not yet recalibrated. However, there
are few auto drivers who do not care about the rules and regulations imposed by the government, they should be fined.” The Bombay High Court had directed that auto rickshaw and taxi drivers should not charge the new fare until their meters get recalibrated.

INMATES of Tihar jail were treated to some laughter by popular comedian Johnny Lever at a function organised in the jail premises. US President Barack Obama welcomes Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the dinner hosted in his honour, at the White House, on Monday evening.
‘Kem Cho’, Obama to Modi
"Kem Cho" -- this is how US President Barack Obama welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Gujarati at the doorstep of the White House, ahead of the rare private dinner hosted in his honour. "Thank you very much, President", Modi responded as the two leaders shook hands and walked inside. "Kem cho", which means 'How are you' is a common greeting among Gujaratis. As Obama hosted Modi for dinner, the local IndianAmericans celebrated the Modi-Obama meeting by organising a cultural event and performing "Garba" dance in front of the White House. Set in an informal ambience, the dinner was the first opportunity for both the leaders to interact with each other. Both the leaders were joined by 20 attendees at the dinner. The President was joined by Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State John Kerry and National Security Advisor Susan Rice among others. Modi was accompanied by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Indian Ambassador to
the US, S Jaishankar among others.
‘An unusual guest’
IT was only warm water for Prime Minister Narendra Modi who turned out to be the 'most unusual guest' in the history of White House where he was the only one who ate nothing at President Barack Obama's dinner for him last night. A plate in front of the Indian leader remained empty as some of the most powerful men and women in the world seated around the table ate compressed avacados, crisped halibut, safron Basmati rice and salmon. Modi only had warm water and asked the rest of the guests not to feel embarrassed and continue with their normal dinner, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said. Mango creme brulee, a classic baked cream dessert was also served during the dinner. The dinner was attended by limited number of guests from each side. Modi has been observing Navratri fasts for the last 40 years and this year it coincided with his five-day US visit from September 26.

been a hit with the support of the officials and enthusiasm of the inmates. "These people need love. Love can reform any being and that is what is missing in their life, which has led them to such unsocial path. I'd give only one message to these people that forget everything and spread love," Lever said. Playback singer Sapna Mukherjee and music directors Amit and Sumeet Kumar were other celebrities who performed at the jail.

president Raj Thackeray had lashed out at the Sena for its continuance in the Centre. He said that he would have snapped the alliance with the BJP a month ago if he were in Uddhav's place. The MNS president also remarked that the Sena was sticking to its alliance with the BJP in municipal corporations of Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan-Dombivali and Aurangabad, as it was the source of income for the party. Stung by the remark, Uddhav Thackeray responded, “After Prime Minis-
ter Narendra Modi returns from his US visit, Geete will meet him and tender his resignation”. After a initial plea of ignorance, Geete in the evening clarified that he would abide by the party president's orders. The BJP pleaded ignorance over the ambivalent stance of the Sena over its presence in the NDA and its ties in the civic bodies. Meanwhile, in a related development, state BJP spokesperson Madhav Bhandari welcomed the decision of Maharashtra Muslim
Sangh, led by Fakir Mohammed Thakur, to extend its support to the BJP. Besides this, party vice president Vinay Sahasrabuddhe inaugurated the 'Lets Talk Governance' programme, the brainchild of the party's Information Technology convenor, Vineet Goenka, yesterday.
Chavan suspects secret BJP-NCP nexus
By A Special Correspondent
C
oming down heavily on the NCP, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan yesterday alleged that there is a secret pact between NCP and the BJP. According to this agreement, the NCP had withdrawn support to the state government. This was a well calculated move worked out by BJP and executed by NCP with an eye on Union Cabinet berths. Chavan was speaking at the launch of the Congress campaign for the October 15
05
Former CM and Congress candidate from Karad South constituency, Prithviraj Chavan addresses an election campaign meeting in Karad, on Tuesday.
Assembly polls at a well-attended rally in this pilgrim town of Tuljapur. He said, “NCP has given the state (now under central rule) to the BJP by withdrawing support. This was their game plan. They want a share in the central government. Everyone will know who joins hands with BJP post the elections.” The Congress-led Democratic Front government in the state collapsed last week, paving the way for imposition of President’s Rule in the state, after the Sharad Pawarled NCP withdrew support to it. Chavan charged the BJP for only being interested in inaugurating projects initiated by the previous United
Progressive Alliance (UPA) government and claiming credit for them. “Did the BJP announce any scheme for farmers after coming to power in Delhi? How many development projects have they undertaken? They are only interested in inaugurating projects that are a result of the Congress’s hard work. Only a government that has a majority can clean the system and ensure development,” he added further. Appealing to the people for their support, Chavan said, “Congress would make affordable homes for all a priority if it is elected to power in the state. We will ensure that every village gets safe
drinking water in the next five years. Time has come for people living in rented homes and slums to enhance their standards”. While addressing the rally, former CM Ashok Chavan said that BJP leaders were busy fighting among themselves for the Chief Minister’s post even before the people have given their verdict. State Congress president Manikrao Thakre, Congress campaign committee chief Narayan Rane, election coordination committee chief Ashok Chavan, former Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde who also heads the party’s manifesto panel, and Harshawardhan Patil were present at the gathering.
Sena-BJP split won’t affect BMC NCP MLA Laxman Dhoble gets interim relief Shiv Sena will continue to retain its power in civic body even if BJP pulls plug By Khushboo Panjabi
E
ven though Shiv Sena has taken a call to withdraw its support to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Centre, the power to rule over the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will continue even if the BJP decides to pull the plug. According to civic officials, the overall strength in the civic body is decided on the basis of the mayor’s election. As we have seen that last month Shiv Sena’s Snehal Ambekar was elected as the new mayor for the term of two and a half years, she will continue till the next civic elections scheduled in 2017, even if the BJP withdraws it support. Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray has announced that Anant Geete, the party’s only minister in the Union cabinet, will tender his
resignation once the Prime Minister returns from his ongoing US trip. Knowing this, the BJP is also likely to follow suit in the BMC. But there has been no official announcement from the party yet. Last week, both tthe parties decided to divorce their 25-year-old alliance after seat-sharing talks failed for the October 15 polls. The ruling alliance was also ruling the BMC since the past 17 years. Another senior civic official added: “The present mayor will continue to function till 2017. If a no-confidence motion is tabled against her and is passed, she can be removed from her post. A fresh election will then be held for a new mayor.” The Shiv Sena has 75 corporators in the 227-member BMC, while the BJP has 31 corporators. There are 10 independents, two from Akhil Bharatiya Sena, one from Republican Party of India (RPI) and one from Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh supporting them in the corporation, apart from the BJP. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

How is it possible for a woman to not remember such a crucial thing. She was a site supervisor at the college. She had nothing to do with the administration. The allegations made by her are false and fabricated.” He further added, “Apparently she duped 60 students by taking money from them in the name of admissions despite the fact that the admissions were online. She and her husband took total Rs.80 lakh for the same and also gave receipts to the students. The matter was reported in the media too, since then
the complainant was absconding. This led the college management into trouble. Management had no option left but to give admission to Laxman Dhoble half of the students and refund the fees of the remaining students. Nalanda Law College management filed a complaint against her on August 20 at Borivli police station. The investigation in the matter is going on. The complainant filed the rape case as a result of the FIR filed against her.” Defence counsel presented the receipts and the copy of the FIRs filed by the college management in the court. Sarogi also said, “There was no need for the complainant to continue with the work if such a frightful incident took place. This is all fabricated and she has misused the
law, also she has abused the protection provided to women by our legal system. There are chances that other parties are also involved in the case to defame the accused, considering the fact that the Vidhan Sabha elections are round the corner.” He added, “My client has to go out in public for campaigning, also the prosecution itself is not sure about the genuineness of the case.” Sarogi asked for some time from the court so that both the parties can collect substantial material related to the case. Public prosecutor Nilima Kasture told the court, “We only have the medical reports of the complainant but it's inconclusive.” While speaking to ADC, she said, “The complainant is a married woman with two kids, the medical examination report is bound to be inconclusive.” Judge V V Joshi adjourned the case till October 28 considering the fact that the elections will be over by that time.

A high-end Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) was also seized from the possession of the quartet who have been charged under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS), 1985. ive months after the stepfather of a 10-year-old girl was arrested for aggravated sexual assault, the Sessions Court on Tuesday sentenced him to six years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 2,000 for the act. Special judge Chanda Nathani sentenced Pappu Kale (45) under section 10 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) his crimes against his step daughter between January and March this year. The victim in her statement said that her stepfather took her to the public bathroom and raped her about a month before her mother's death. She told her mother about the incident who confronted Pappu, but he assaulted her. After her mother's death, the girl says that Pappu assaulted her another four times. According to the prosecution, Sakari Walmiki (35), the maternal
aunt of the victim, had filed the FIR of sexual assault and rape under POCSO. She said in her statement that her niece used to live with her parents. After her father died five years prior to the incident, her mother moved in with Pappu at the Lower Parel bridge. The statement reads, “The couple later moved to Mahim. The victim's mother was a tuberculosis patient. Three months after her death, the victim's neighbours took her in because she was uncomfortable living with her stepfather. But a month later, Pappu came knocking on their door and offered them Rs 100 to send the girl back to him. When they refused, he pulled out a razor blade and threatened them.” Public prosecutor Sheela Jamdar said, “The victim's statement was an important part of the evidence. The judge sentenced Pappu to six years to set an example.”

Watengaokar stated that there was a nexus which led Nilangekar to approve the allotment of the land to the Adarsh Society and also membership of his son-inlaw Dr Arun Dawle to the society. On September 17, the court rejected Rao's intervention application and asked him to get a stay on its order from the HC. But the defence which had not yet done this said that the application has already been drafted and
would be filed as soon as it was approved by Nilangekar, it will be filed in the HC. It further sought adjournment of proceedings for four weeks so that the order can be challenged in the High Court. To this judge Bhosle ordered the defence to go to the HC on October 1 and adjourned the case till October 4. He said that if the defence doesn't get the stay order, the the court will listen to the final arguments on the application on October 4.

Chief Public Relation Officer Narendra Patil said, “Only the guard coach of the Titwala-bound train was de-
railed. Immediately after the accident, a breakdown van was shifted to Dombivali station.” Around 3.45 pm, the line was restored and the track was certified as safe for traffic. he Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is developing a software to maintain data of hawkers in order to maintain the details of hawkers across the city, registration for which is expected to end by October. The software will be called 'Scrutiny Software', is to be used from November onwards.
Additional Municipal Commissioner Mohan Adtani who retired yesterday said, “This software will give the civic body a data of the total number of vendors which will enable them to mark the zones and oraganise the necessary data from different zones.” The software will maintain data of the hawkers which will include the registration process to hawking zones and fees to be charged from vendors. The system is being made under section 38 of the
Street Vendors' (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014 and should be ready within a month. “The scheme will deal with the actual operative part of the act which includes an assessment of the requirements, obtaining the recommendations of the town vending committee and setting guiding principles,” said Adtani. This entire process once ready will be tabled in the general body meeting and then submitted to the state government for approval. There are seven teams which have been set up to draft the system. Each team is headed by an assistant municipal commissioner and the work will be coordinated by deputy municipal commissioners Vijay Balamwar and BG Pawar. The new system will have the data which will describe the mode of survey, list the terms and conditions for issuing the hawkers' registration certificate and the manner and criteria required and other mandatory details. The street vendors' act mandates the number of hawkers at 2.5 per cent of the population of the city. khushboo.panjabi@afternoondc.in

RIME Minister Narendra Modi's visit has produced quite a few mutually beneficial results. It has raised appreciably collaboration in many fields – trade, investment, technology – to a higher level. From now, while dealing with internal or international issues, they can consult each other and come up with an action plan. India's concern could be America's concern, too. We can definitely expect greater assistance from America with regard to our problem with Pakistan. In our feud with Pakistan, the US sometimes indicated it was more in sympathy with Pakistan. As global partners, the two countries will have an agenda that enables them to find mutually rewarding ways to expand their collaboration in trade, investment and technology that harmonises with India's ambitious agenda, while sustaining the United States as the global engine of growth. The American direct investments in India is likely to exceed that of any other country. After the new government announced a new policy, the US made it known it was interested in a big way in this regard. Big international companies in the US have now a big offer from India with regard to investments. A huge result of Mr Modi's visit with be the inflow of large investments from the United States. Apart from participating in the development of India, American industrialists and business men are also aware India has a large market with a steadily improving consumer purchasing power. Now the talks between the two leaders will result in making investment procedures easy. Both the leaders have declared they will offer mutual assistance in making all dealings fast and easy. An immediate area of support is the Clean India Campaign. It would have been better, perhaps, if American assistance – as a priority – was available for dealing with the survival needs of an underdeveloped India.

N interesting takeaway from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s big bang US visit was the hug Sushma Swaraj shared with Hillary Clinton. Now, that’s what you call body language. That one gesture said more than a thousand words. There was warmth, mutual appreciation and a feminine bonding that only two power women can have. What made the moment such a great photo op was the awkward looks from the two men in the picture. Both Bill Clinton and Narendra Modi seemed unsure how to respond to this display of feely-touchy emotions by two women leaders who have more than their gender in common. In many ways, the career trajectories of Sushma and Hillary have been similar. Both were aspirants to the top jobs in their countries and were beaten by Johnny-come-lately rivals with little or nor experience of national politics or international affairs. Yet, because they could not be ignored, they had to be accommodated. It’s interesting that both were given the plum portfolio of foreign affairs. Foreign policy has always been driven by the head of government, in the US and in India. But Hillary managed to make a mark for herself as Obama’s secretary of state by throwing herself into the job with everything she had. Sushma’s stint as Modi’s foreign minister has just started. She too has an opportunity to use her experience and tremendous people’s skills to carve her own niche in the government. Maybe the hug Hillary gave her was empathetic and sympathetic. Maybe there were hidden tips for Sushma in body language that was loud and clear. Hillary is already being spoken of as the next Democratic presidential candidate and possibly the next President of the US. Not many know that Sushma has had several interactions with Hillary in the past, even hosting her at home on at least two occasions when she visited India. Now, that’s a relationship that should prove extremely useful for Modi in his dealings with the US. He just has to show enough savvy to extract the best from Sushma.

Xi Jinping’s India trip are completely in the dark too. It is puzzling because the group that went included BJP general secretary Ram Madhav who fancies himself an authority on China. Madhav, a former RSS spokesman who was transferred to the BJP shortly after the Lok Sabha elections, recently authored a book called India and China: Uneasy Neighbours after Fifty Years of War. The book has been hailed by retired Indian diplomats close to saffron circles as 'essential reading' for those who wish to understand the complexities of

They met a host of senior functionaries in China but came back clueless about the snub Beijing had in store for India when Xi Jinping came visiting. What is particularly galling for defence authorities is that the Chumar sector, where Chinese troops marched in, is one of the more peaceful areas along the LAC. The territory demarcation in this sector has never been challenged by China. So why now when Xi Jinping was on a goodwill visit to meet India’s new prime minister who laid out the red carpet to welcome him? The incident has left a sour taste in the mouth in New Delhi with senior government leaders talking about a trust deficit between India and China.
HEN some people claim that illness is an illusion, that it has no existence of its own. The ordinary point of view can also be exaggerated when one thinks that medicine is the only means of cure and that thought has little to do with actual illness. Both these persons, the one who looks at it from the ordinary point of view and the other who sees from a deeper point of view, will find arguments for and against their idea. Some people go as far as to say that medicine must not be touched by those who have faith, and some affirm that an illness is as real as health. It is in the absence of illness that a person can easily call pain an illusion, but when he is suffering, then it is difficult for him to call it an illusion. The question, who is more subject to illness, a spiritual person or a material person, may be answered thus: a spiritual person who discards spiritual laws. No doubt a spiritually inclined person is supposed to have less chance of being ill, because his spirit has become harmonious through spirituality. He creates har-

Mulayam’s brother Shivpal Yadav and cousin Ram Gopal Yadav are believed to have mended fences and are on talking terms again. Their relationship had soured when Ram Gopal backed Akhilesh Yadav for the post of UP chief minister instead of Shivpal. But faced with political extinction after the BJP’s sweeping victory in UP in the Lok Sabha polls, Shivpal and Ram Gopal put their heads together for the by-polls. The patch-up paid huge dividends for the SP which managed to win 8 of the 11 seats for which by-polls were held. Mulayam has now cracked the whip on his party and is trying to put the administration back on the rails. Parliamentary board meeting on the future of the alliance with Shiv Sena that the internal deliberations were being relayed on television channels as breaking news. Sure enough, when they put on the TV set in the meeting room to check it out, the information turned out to be correct. The discussions were being flashed as headlines on news channels in real time. Modi angrily asked who was sending messages to the media about the party’s internal discussions. Of course, no-one owned up. One leader was bold enough to say that their mobile phones were not working because of the jammers that accompany Modi’s cavalcade wherever he goes. But it was clear to Modi that someone inside the room was leaking to the media, jammers or no jammers. Although Amit Shah as party president and Parliamentary Board Head was chairing the meeting, it was Modi who drew the red lines. He told all the leaders present that no-one was allowed to talk to the press after the meeting. Only Shahnawaaz Hussain would brief the media and he would limit himself to revealing information authorized by Modi himself. When he met the press later, Hussain’s anxiety was palpable. He preceded every sentence he spoke by emphasizing that it had been cleared by Modi.
mony and radiates it. He keeps to the realm of nature, in tune with the Infinite. Nevertheless, a spiritual person's life in the midst of the world is like the life of a fish on land. The fish is a creature of the water. Its sustenance, its joy, its happiness are in the water. A spiritual soul is made for solitude. His joy and happiness are in solitude. A spiritual person, set in
MATTER & SPIRIT the midst of the world by destiny, feels out of place, and the ever jarring influences of those around him and the continually striking impressions which disturb his finer senses, make it more likely that he will become ill than those who push their way in the crowd of the world and are ready to be pushed away. A spiritual person admires all things, appreciates all things, and enjoys all things to their fullness. Therefore, if one says that the spiritual person is like a young person, this is true also.
People have lost the conception of normal health these days when the standard of normal health is below the real conception of health. To be healthy is not only to be muscular: to be really healthy is to be able to enjoy and appreciate life fully. To be healthy means to be thoughtful; the one who can feel deeply shows the sign of health. It is not surprising if a material prison becomes ill, nor is it amazing if a spiritual person is unwell. The former becomes ill because he has lost his rhythm, the latter is ill because he could not keep to a rhythm which is not his own. Be one spiritual or material, since one has to live in the midst of the world, one shares the conditions of all those who are far and near. One cannot close one's eyes, nor can one close one's heart, to the impressions, which continually fall upon one. The best one can do is to keep a careful watch against all that comes upon one causing irregularity, inharmonic and disorder, to be resigned to all one has to pass through, and to be courageous in order to overcome all that keeps one back from health and perfection. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

THIS refers to the article 'Modi determined to stand up to an aggressive China' (September 29, ADC). India and China are two Asian tigers with rapidly developing economies. But China is far ahead of India because of three distinct reasons – decisive leadership, class infrastructure and solid manufacturing sector. But India can take on China! We have a strong and decisive leader in Narendra Modi and with Japanese assistance, India will soon have world class infrastructure. And the 'Make in India' campaign of our dynamic Prime Minister which will result in a huge inflow of FDI will boost our manufacturing sector. India has a huge domestic market and the largest chunk of the young population, unlike China where the population is aging fast, resulting in high labour costs. So with changes in the land acquisition and labour laws coupled with a business friendly environment, India will become a global manufacturing hub in the foreseeable future. — Prof K H Karkera, via email Pic: Murugesh Iyer, Thane

APROPOS 'LAC more complicated after Xi Jinping's visit' (September 30, ADC), the analytical edit piece by Kuldip Nayar deals with the very serious issue of unscrupulous Chinese incursions in the Northeast Indian border. These incursions since the first Chinese invasion of India in 1962 is going on unabated, leading to their illegitimate occupation of Arunachal Pradesh and the other neighbouring Northeastern border states of India. PM Modi has a hard task on his hands to deal with such a strong neighbour who cannot be trusted considering the history of events, and predominantly involved with Indian territorial clashes/skirmishes. I feel that a country like China should only be allowed to carry out business in India provided its border attitude changes to the extent that military developments detrimental to Indian territorial safety should be totally stopped.
Dying KBC WHEN Kaun Banega Crorepathi was inaugurated 14 years ago it made waves as a programme purely based on general knowledge questions. But what we see during the recent years is that the show is fast succumbing to the lure of commercialisation. It has now become a vehicle to be used as a launching pad to generate publicity for new Bollywood releases and new serials to be aired by the channel. Fifty per cent of the episodes (two out of four per week) are now exclusively reserved for such ventures. If they continue this way, the day is not far off when its TRP ratings will hit rock bottom and it will totally lose its initial appeal. — Vineet Phadtare, Borivali

faintly recollect that the Pakistani commandos had foiled a hijacking attempt made on some Indian ship and safely rescued the Indian hostages who were later on handed over to the Indian authorities. In light of the heavily surcharged atmosphere between the two countries during the recent times remembering such a rarest of rare incident assumes a lot of significance. Two, in the early morning hours of September 29/30, 1993, a devastating earthquake, with the epicentre at Killari in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, led to the loss of over 10,000 lives apart from destroying property worth crores of rupees.
A lot is being said in the media on the prevention of heart disease. The health authorities should now educate the masses on prevention of other ailments tormenting our society. Mental health should be given priority, as cases of suicide are increasing by the day. Even as i write this, we have news that a young model has ended her life. Scores in our society have become prisoners of the mind, living in a hell of panic and fear and they suffer in silence. Stigma, too, needs to be removed and people need to be told that any healthy individual can have worryrelated issues. It is time for us to recognise this problem and act!
IT is a matter of immense pride that Amitabh Bachchan is set to provide his voice to the Chhattisgarh government to prop up the state at the national and universal level. Amitabh Bachchan visited Chhattisgarh for the first time after the state was carved out of Madhya Pradesh in November 2000 and was overwhelmed with the enormous natural resources, cultural affluence and the scope of tourism in the state. He was in Raipur this weekend to shoot episodes for Kaun Banega Crorepati and had the privilege to meet Chief Minister Raman Singh at his official residence where he was apprised about Chhattisgarh’s immense potential as one of the fastest growing states in the country. It is further interesting to know that he has expressed his willingness not only to project Chhattisgarh on the national and global maps but also his services for the extensive promotion and publicity of various distinctive facets of the state.

Sinister alliances and a biased system IF the existence of a political party were to be justified only on the basis of its distinctively unique doctrine, plans and policies under the framework of the Indian constitution, alliances between parties would be counter-productive and self-defeating. But we do have many parties, and they are all based on egos and interests rather than clear-cut distinction of character. It is, therefore, good for the political health of our country that alliances for convenience and political expediency have split up for the forthcoming Assembly elections. amsungs 5.7-inch Note 4 bears Samsung's first 1440p display and quad-core Snapdragon 805 chipset. When Samsung in 2011 launched the Samsung Galaxy Note range which came with a 5.3-inch screen many pointed out it was too large to be a phone and too compact to be a tablet. Three years down the line we have phones which have up to a 6-inch screen. The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 has the same 5.7-inch screen as the Note 3 but the screen now boasts Quad HD Super AMOLED (2,560 x 1,440 resolution) technology that stretches to 500 pixels per inch. S Pen - the stylus is quite
impressive with signatures being much clear and handwriting looking more real. The camera has gone from 13MP to 16MP. It also has optical image stabilisation, which makes a big difference in steady shots while holding a big tablet in one hand. A 3.7megapixel wide-angle frontfacing camera has been added to maximize selfies. Samsung has given the Note 4 the same battery as the Note 3 (3200mAh). There are now three mics on the handset (two at the bottom and one on the top), these are used well when recording voices. The Note 4 has 32GB internal storage, with an option to expand by 64GB more. It has 3GB RAM.

COACH YOURSELF FOR SUCCESS ‘To self-learn or to join a coaching class’ - this question crosses the mind of almost all students and their parents when gearing up to prepare for an entrance exam. The right to decide the better way should rest with the students, because each student chooses to prepare for a competitive examination depending on his or her ability and ease of study, says Sameer Bora, EVP - Research & Development, Next Education India Pvt Ltd
A
key point to consider is that coaching is not complete without self-study. Coaching classes alone cannot help, unless proper self-study is undertaken seriously by the students. Even coaching institutes give assignments to complement their in-class learning, so self-study is mandatory for the students. One of the primary reasons why students find a coaching class useful is because it systematises the preparation process, which many students find difficult. However, a coaching class functions at a set pace according to the batch and does not cater to individuals. Therefore, some students might not be able to keep pace with the class and may end up feeling stressed. Self-learning has its own benefits, provided it is taken up with diligence. It allows students to explore different ways of thinking and learning, and they can go through difficult concepts on their own. The process of selflearning improves the problem solving skills of students by encouraging them to actively participate in the learning process. Every student has the ability to solve problems regardless of their age, and through self-learning, students learn about how to study more than what to study. In the current K-12 scenario, many courses have ballooned in size. Thus, it is vital to know how to learn than just what to
learn. Besides this, self-learning also induces self-confidence and discipline and makes students responsible for their own learning. It allows each student to tackle problems based on his/her capabilities. Students today are expected to learn how to learn – this skill is crucial, considering the rapidly changing technology and wide choice of career options available. The best time to build this important skill is during the school years. Additionally, quality coaching classes are not available in many towns and cities in our country. So, students have to travel to cities where these classes are available. Also, coaching for all the subjects may not be available in the same coaching institution. Thus, they have to attend classes for different subjects in different institutions which is time consuming and they are left with very little time for self-study. In coaching classes, educators cannot differentiate the students based on their level of learning. In a batch that consists of more than 10 students, the class will move at a median pace. The brighter students who learn fast will feel bored, while those needing help cannot keep up to the pace and are left behind. This goes against the very reason why parents insist on
ority complex in the competitive environment. Self-learning using electronic tools is a wellaccepted reality in India today. Students now can learn from many sources other than their schools, be it television, radio or computer. Indeed, students are expected to know much more than what is available in static content like books or a set curriculum. In fact, it is the ability to learn on one’s own that is crucial for success in the world outside. Most people work on problems that keep on changing, there is no book or class that can prepare them with the answers – it is only the ability to learn anew that can help. At the end of the day, you have to realise that apart from deciding on coaching institutes and selfstudy, the main factor for your success in exams is still your determination and hard work.
coaching classes in the first place. A self-learning solution allows students to learn at a speed they are comfortable with. A good self-learning solution also offers a timetable so that students can benchmark themselves against reallife competition. Benchmarking is also important against a much larger sample set. Quite often, the students think they are doing very well, but they have achieved this success in a very small peer group. Good benchmarking data at a national level is only available to providers who operate on a much larger scale. Peer pressure also plays a very important role in the coaching class structure. Many students are not comfortable with the subject in the first place; hence they go to coaching classes. But, due to the differential levels of students in coaching classes, these students hesitate to ask questions and cannot keep up with the pace of the class. Weak students may develop inferi-

ata Power’s nationwide energy conservation programme, Club Enerji, recently celebrated World Car Free Day to spread awareness on protection of the environment. Students of Club Enerji participated in energy conservation rallies and enthusiastically chanted slogans such as ‘Save fuel, Save the Earth’, carried handmade posters and banners, and placards with paintings depicting various ways to conserve the environment and reduce the use of fossil fuels such as petrol and diesel. Inside the running mind of a PR professional “Every day turns out to be a new day,” says Anuja Sharma, director of strategy, service and business development at ODD (Oorna Datta Designs)
I
did my MBA in marketing, Masters in journalism and mass communications, Bachelors in English literature. My ever-curious nature made me opt for the journalism and mass communication course. During the course, I learned about how public relations and communications impact and influence people around us. At that stage I was certain that this would be my field. And the fact that as a fresher, a PR role paid a tad bit more than journalism made me seize the deal. It’s been 14 years since I have been in the communications field, and even today, every day turns out to be a new day. That is why I like this field. The excitement, the challenge and the variety is like that sumptuous multi-layered cake that you don’t want to finish. With each bite there is something new to discover. My education has helped in several ways. From learning the basics of communications, to understanding what has worked and not worked through case studies and group assignments, somewhere they all played a huge role in my career path; especially in the initial days.
My training days were fun! And truth is, with the evolution of communications, globally and in India, every day there is something new to be learned. I was fortunate to have patient bosses with a keen eye for detail. They trained me enough to understand the meaning of a lot in the job I do. There were times that I had to write out a piece of communication several times over because I was unable to capture the essence. It was tiring, but it was a strong foundation. With the craziness that goes around in agencies, the fun in all this couldn’t be excluded. I lead the strategy, service and business development at ODD. We are a growing agency and it’s exciting to wear so many hats at the same time. We believe in providing our clients unique communication solutions and undivided attention, and in an era where deadlines are shorter, it’s more exciting than exhausting. I believe in managing time so that all expectations are well managed and at the end of the day have time for myself too.
« PEER SPEAK
The most critical investments have been my hard work, and the ownership I have towards every job that is given to me. I believe that there aren’t any substitutes to these. Once you believe in the work you do you will succeed in it. Remuneration depends on where you are working and as what. But today’s pay cheques are way better than what we expected when we started. Even trainees are paid sufficiently well. So all one needs is a great attitude and openness to learn, and they will definitely find a job that takes good care of them. The wide exposure and the opportunity that agencies provide are strong stepping stones towards becoming a communications expert. One has to give a couple of years to hone these skills and build leadership qualities, guiding and motivating teams. How much can one earn as a professional is a tough question for me to answer, as pay scales are changing rapidly in the industry. There are several reasons to it, including the high costs of living. Also, just like a fresher, even professionals’ pay scales vary, depending where they are from, what they are working as and their experience. But, I can confidently say that if an individual fits the bill,
companies will pay a satisfactory amount to hire them! I love communications and each year I have handled new challenges, met and engaged with a variety of people, and got the chance to deep dive in to the workings of several industries. From healthcare to lifestyle, from finance to media, I firmly believe that a communications role is one that expands your horizons like none other. Like every job, long days – late nights are part of the game. More than difficulty, I think the excitement of cracking new ideas is the most thrilling. I wouldn’t see that as a difficultly because then the fun goes out of it. We need to work on ideas that are unique, exclusive and impactful, each time. That is what gets you all pumped up and ready to go full throttle. My career has been guided by dedicated professionals who taught me the details of the business, who patiently gave me the opportunity to strengthen my expertise and develop a keen sense of what will work here. I believe more than anything else, you need the right attitude and the willingness to learn. Take ownership of the job. And finally, have fun! It’s essential. As told to Monarose Sheila Pereira

Love Thy College By Sachin S, R.D National College
W
hen someone asks you, “What do you love the most about your college?” you are bound to give them that 'are-you-serious?' look which signifies one of two things – Either you love your college in so many ways that you don’t know how to put it in words or you hate it with the insides of your innards. I happen to be a member of the first category. What do I love most about my college? Logically, I should be saying my course is good and the location is superb and go on and on about such superficial attributes. But then again, like your average Hindi potboiler, logic is overrated. Because ultimately, it's your illogical heart that holds the harness to happiness. What does my heart say? I love my college because it lets me be myself. A future awaits us all where we are expected to conform to societal notions and customs
Convocation By Sachin Syamalan
A
s a student of R D National College for the past three years, I have pretty much seen the good, the bad and the ugly that life has to offer.
No, this is not another misguided article about a grumpy student with grievances (yes, heave a sigh). This one is about that beautiful thing called convocation. The event that signifies that your
phenomenal/abysmal college life has officially ended. Convocations are special for all students. A day where tears are your memories caressing you one last time, before they dissolve into mass hysteria. That’s the day you can bid adieu to all your friends and give your not-so-friends one last scowl. But it becomes all the more zany when your course is/was BMM (for the less informed that is Bachelor in Mass Media). Why? Because like everything in BMM it is a celebration of all things not clichéd. While you do have your formal speeches from faculty, the real fun begins when the theme kicks in and your juniors bring their brand of quirkiness to the celebration. Character traits, hilarious incidents; milestones of the three years are all played out in front of the misty–eyed graduates, who by the end of it are overwhelmed by nostalgia. Dance, Drama, Songs… everything incorporates an element of the theme and ties up with their ‘BMM Days’. At the end of it is the quintessential photo session – one click that liberates everyone into their most joyous selves.

Their menu includes heritage fusion of Punjabi and Mughlai cuisine crafted by expert chefs trained under famous Chef Harpal Singh Sokhi. The fairly elegant ambience of the restaurant enhances the pleasure of celebrating any occasion, from intimate dinning encounters to informal parties to formal get-togethers with an adjoining bar to the dining area. The seating at ‘Twist of tadka’ is limited and for few, so if you are looking to visit this restaurant on
TISS launches School of Vocational Education T
ata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) recently launched the School of Vocational Education. The framework for the TISS School of Vocational Education (SVE) was conceptualised in 2011, thus creating a unique model to spread skill development to every nook and corner of the country. This entailed identifying partners, developing courses, curriculum and content as well as the entire supporting mechanism. Vocational courses have been designed with a definite vision to improve the lives of the disadvantaged and marginalised youth, especially those who are excluded by the formal school education system. TISS SVE has been set up to create an ecosystem that would bring back dignity of labour for blue collar streams of work and create a sustainable source of income. This project has been initiated under the aegis of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) proposed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. The approach adopted by TISS SVE is called the Work Integrated

weekends then you might land up waiting your turn. The food is greatly hyped and not all the items on the menu match the description and are moderately overpriced. But few of the dishes were genuinely astounding like ‘Murghmalai tikka’ which was delicious and cooked to perfection. ‘Paneer Hariyali’was another exception that vegetarians will die for but other appetizers were very ordinary and did not keep up to the expectations. The most disappointing was ‘Mutton Seekh kebab’ which was stale and served cold. Overall all the appetizers had one thing in common - lemon juice which was present in all salads, chutneys and starters. Virgin mojito the only mocktail that we ordered was more like ‘Nimbu Paani with Pudina’. Our fluctuating experience ended with the signature Biryani of this restaurant which was surprisingly well prepared in a typical Punjabi flavour with tender chunks of chicken. The restaurant is a fusion of Punjabi and Mughlai cuisine. It’s an average Indian restaurant with a fairly decent ambience and limited options on menu.

JUGGLING YOUR WORK AND PASSION <<Some of Naressa’s artistic work
By Naressa Coutinho
I
am not ashamed to call myself a scavenger of happiness. I grimly brood over my present state of affairs. I am a 25year-old content writer at a reputed fashion firm, but content I am not. While millennials like myself prance about me in utter envy, I feel something missing deep within. Am I following my passion? Do I really have the dream job everyone thinks it to be? I had the equations all wrong and hankered for deliverance from a career slump. I was pursuing my passion as a writer and yet I reclined into dissatisfaction. What was my recipe for a blissful career? I tried to make a livelihood out of my passion and couldn’t remember the moment it turned into an obligation. While some of our lucky peers find their dream jobs, others battle it out daily until one day, they inevitably chant to the defeated tune of mid-life crises. Ironically, your life is what you make of it! A dream job is being paid to pursue your passion for which you have the required skill set and more. If your current situation doesn’t meet this definition, you are either dissatisfied or without ambition. Often you hear glorious tales of entrepreneurs and their rebellious exploits to success. They follow their passion, live their dream and mint in green. “Why work so hard to build another’s business when you can direct the same energy and more towards your own!” they say and truth be told, it’s not as easy as it seems. The fact is that businesses can fail and with job security taking a beating, you finally give up on the one thing that always made you happy. Chasing your dreams thus has its own share of risks
and challenges. I infer, it doesn’t have to be either-or. The new chip on the block is the ‘freelancer' – one who pursues his passion even in a 40hour week. He builds his contacts, develops his personal brand and earns a fixed sum every month. I can be a writer on the weekend or by nightfall and I’d be guilty of lying to myself if I said I had no time. Freelancing means making time to do something you enjoy and are good at. I have always loved to sketch and somehow the depravity of a full-time job and my house renovation surfaced almost simultaneously and a month later, I was looking at my own wall art. I had somehow made time after work to return to a can of paint, a fine brush and an artsy fever. I had painted in every room and I discovered a newfound passion. Of course, I wasn’t going to quit my job and start my own business, yet it did boost my failing confidence. It is like those extracurricular activities that made you stand out in school or college. Easier said than done, however it always helps to be a MondayFriday employee as opposed to a 6-day worker. Pursuing your passion on the side ought to rejuvenate your mind and not add to the stress. I feel the need to separate my passion from a lay-an-egg-a-day job and keep the stress levels in check. I had this stroke of luck when I joined a consulate for a brief stint to improve on my language skills. I do enjoy learning languages as well and I believe it broadens your outlook and makes you more independent. Coming back to the point of joining a non-stressful working environment, I was able to do full justice to freelance writing as well as leisure writing. In fact, pursuing your passion through
freelance opportunities together with a full time job is like lemonade on a summery day. I infer, supplement your income and make the most of your time. Do full justice to your day job and to your passion. Never hijack your weekends with incomplete office work or else the Monday-blues syndrome is just what you deserve. It is important to balance the two. Always stick to deadlines and keep organised at all times, even if you feel like rolling your eyeballs in exasperation. Keeping your workplace clean and organised helps you manage your career and time well. While you work towards building, a personal brand and reputation, don’t make the brash leap from a secure job. Instead ensure that
you’ve covered all grounds for your future endeavours. Having a full-time job allows you to work the connectivity chord, be it through Twitter, Facebook or any other forum that aids self-marketing. I infer a 9-5 job gives you the experience required to professionalise your passion. So don’t be bogged down if you don’t share the same fate as the Eva Chens of our time with their ultimate dream jobs, just work towards being happy. You may be a teacher by day and a wedding cake baker by night or a nutritionist taking yoga classes on the weekend or even an accountant with a professional camera secretly tucked away in his bag to cover a special event after work. Be ambitious, after all ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ was quite the man!

PANSHIKARS:
By Maria Khatri
Panshikars at V P Road serves hot and fresh Indian junk food like Misal Paav, Vada Paav, Sabudana Vada and much more. A comparatively small joint but has a host of good dishes. It is best to visit Panshikars for early morning breakfast and start your day with spice. A whole meal for two can cost you less than Rs 100.
H
ere are the yummiest and healthiest junk food joints that college going kids love in Mumbai. Junk food has acquired a new definition with India being highly influenced by the Western culture of fast food. However, it is a myth that junk and fast food is always unhealthy and extremely oily. Youth entrepreneurs are changing this myth. Following are some hand-picked junk joints in no particular order for you to try.
THE J:
Located opposite HR College in Vasvani Mansion, this one reminds one of the 1970s and 1980s. What to expect of The J? An amazing concept of fries and shakes. The various combinations they have are insane but yummy. The owner, Jai Vasvani, personally keeps a check on the quality served to the customers. Fries are offered in a cone with the dip of your choice. This café is popular among college students. However, this is a pick and move joint, you must be able to grab your fries and drink and move on. The J offers much more. Must try – the French fries with Tandoori dip and the Oreo shake.
FATBOYS KITCHEN:
What is the first thought that comes to your mind when you think about junk and fast food? Burgers. Juicy succulent burgers. Located at Andheri, Fatboys Kitchen is the place to go for juicy burgers. The thing which impressed us most about the Fatboys Kitchen is that they have adapted themselves to the junk food culture keeping in mind the health of its clients. They do not fry their patty like most others, in spite of that their burgers are healthy and juicy with maximum portion of proteins and taste. It may be a very small joint with a limited menu. However, what they serve is apt. I would highly recommend sticking to the burgers.
CHUNG FA:
Located at Tardeo, Chung Fa tops the chart when it comes to Indian junk healthy authentic Chinese. It might be difficult to get yourself a seat at any hour of the day but it’s worth the wait. Chung Fa offers a large variety of authentic Chinese at reasonable rates. Chinese which is not only affordable but also one of the proudest and oldest joints Mumbai has had. The only drawback Chung Fa has is that is a congested small restaurant with not much space hence it gets difficult to enjoy your food in ease. You should try their signature dishes like the prawn crack-

One of the most famous north Indian dishes, which is basically what flour semi-circled pancakes serves with Chokha, a mixture of roasted Eggplant, potato, tomato, onion, ginger, garlic, green chillies, coriander and mustard oil. The Nifty witnessed a volatile session and moved in a range of 107 points. Sentiment was mixed and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 24 were gainers, while 26 were losers. Substantial buying was witnessed in consumer durables, healthcare and oil & gas stocks, while substantial selling was witnessed in realty and power stocks.

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for the Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) expects a stronger growth momentum of 5.5 % for India in 2014-15 on account of economic expansion, likely uptick in exports and a stable government at the Centre. The Indian economy had registered a growth of 4.9 % in fiscal year ending 2014, up from 4.5 % in the previous fiscal, but far below the 9.5 % pace three years before the global financial crisis of 2008. "The economy is expected to enjoy stronger growth momentum of 5.5 % in the fiscal year 2014, underpinned by solid expansion in the industrial and services sectors. Higher growth in the developed countries and the weaker local currency would support exports," said the UN ESCAP report on Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific-2014 released yesterday. However, it expects the inflation to remain at an elevated level of 8 % for the year.

Future Monetary Policy To Be Inflation Data-Driven RBI keeps interest rates unchanged
By A Business Reporter
R
eserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajan on Tuesday left all key rates unchanged citing increased risks to inflation and difficult external situation especially on the geopolitical front. This is the fourth consecutive time that the RBI has kept key interest rates unchanged despite calls from industry to cut rates to boost economy. The short-term lending rate (repo) rate now stands at 8 %, and the cash reserve requirement of banks at 4 %. Inflation is panning out as per the Reserve Bank's expectations and the monetary policy going forward will be dependent purely on data releases, Governor Raghuram Rajan
said yesterday."We are currently positioned to reach the 6 % (inflation target) by 2016...As of now we are reasonably set, our expectation is that we will reach that target. The (future) policy will be data-contingent," Rajan told reporters after announcing the bi-monthly policy review. He said the target of having inflation at 8 % by January 2015 is easier than the "harder" task of getting it down to 6 % by January 2016. "We are a little better than we were in August, but there are still risks in achieving the 6 % target," Rajan said. The RBI had first talked of the upside risks to the 6 % inflation target at the August policy review. As regards the differences between the monetary policy report, which projects inflation to be at 7 %
Experts React...
RBI has kept its policy rates viz., repo rate & CRR unchanged in line with expectations that the focus for the time being is to bring down Inflation to the targeted 6% level. Inflation continues to drift downwards with WPI to near five –year low at 3.74% and CPI inflation at 7.8% in August 2014, due to lower food and fuel prices. We expect inflation to continue falling in the coming months due to benign global commodity prices on the one hand as well as the government’s focus to bring down food and wage inflation by avoiding inflationary impulses from sharp MSP price hikes, etc. on the other. Hence, we expect that in the coming 6-12 months, we are headed for lower inflation and therefore interest rates, which should be a key positive catalyst for investments, growth and capital markets. — Dinesh Thakkar, Chairman & MD, Angel Broking
Largely the policy declarations are in line with our expectations. We do not expect any movement in interest rates in near future as a consequence of policy measures. Guidelines for cut in HTM, spread over next one year beginning January 2015, are a welcome step as it removes uncertainty on this issue. Banks can now better plan dilution from HTM. By allowing up to 7 % of NDTL to be reckoned for LCR purpose, the system is now better placed for compliance. In our case it means that Rs 28,000 crore from SLR will be available for classification as HQLA (high quality Liquid assets). Importers are now allowed to hedge 100% , in place of 50 %, on the basis of their last three years turnover or the previous year’s turnover, whichever is higher. It will help importers in hedging their exposures in time. — Mrs. V.R. Iyer, CMD, Bank of India
The RBI has maintained its anti-inflationary stance despite improving domestic (falling vegetable prices) and global (crude) cues. Upside risks to the mediumterm inflation target (6% by Jan’16) remain, albeit lower than at the last policy meet. While key rates have been kept unchanged in line with expectations, the ECR limit has been cut from 32% to 15% (w.e.f. 10 Oct) and the HTM SLR limit will be reduced in a calibrated manner by 50bps each over the next four quarters to 22% by the Sep-Dec’15 quarter. We believe downside risks to policy rates have reduced substantially and now expect the first repo cut in Q1FY16 vs. Q4FY15 earlier. — Gautam Y. Trivedi, MD & Head of Equities, Religare Capital Markets
Liquidity conditions remain balanced in market, with government finances improving and rising demand growth. The recourse of liquidity from RBI by daily net liquidity injection through LAF, term repo and MSF has decreased in September 2014, suggesting less liquidity pressure on banks. Also, RBI will continue 14 day term repos and daily overnight repos. Banking stocks are thus seen inching higher and focus could be on PSU banks. — Kiran Kumar Kavikondala, CEO, WealthRays Securities
by January 2016, as against the more optimistic picture presented in the policy statement, Rajan conceded to the discrepancies. "There are some discrepancies between our modelling of inflation, which says it will be 7 % and the inflation stance or the policy stance taken by all of us putting our judgement also to work. Our judgement is that given all that we know about what is happening, and some of it is models plus subjectivity, that we can still reach 6 % by January 2016 given where we are today," Rajan explained. The governor, who had hiked interest rates thrice in the last 13 months that he has been at the helm as the central bank Governor, has been driving policy with a focus on containing price rise. The RBI has a "glide path" for inflation, under which it wants to reduce the price rise. The consumer price inflation, which is being used more increasingly by the RBI since Rajan took over, eased to 7.8 % for August. He spoke about many positives on the inflation front, like the low oil prices, stable exchange rates and a tempering in rural wages growth, but also pointed to risks like the evolution of food prices following the deficient monsoons. "If the data come in and say that we are going to miss the 6 % inflation target, we will have to tighten and if the data say we are going to do better than 6 percent or earlier than January, we will be more accommodative," he added. He said there is no real interest rate which the RBI is targeting, but said there is a need for households to invest more in financial products, saying investments in those have suffered due to a perception of negative returns and also some tax incentives going off.
USINPAC releases the US-India ‘Business Barometer’
U.S. Executives Think Working With India-Based Businesses Is A Good Investment By A Business Reporter
T
he US India Political Action Committee (USINPAC), a leading voice of the Indian American community launched its flagship ‘USINPAC Business Barometer’ conducted by APCO Insight for AUSIB. The Alliance for US India Business (AUSIB) offers a pathway to help businesses succeed in the US and India and continues to be instrumental in building the bridges of business and educational cooperation between the two countries. The survey that was conducted with 301 business executives’ measures perceptions and attitudes of U.S. and Indian business executives about working in India and the U.S reveals: Half of US executives see robust & substantial business opportunities in India; In terms of investments India has the best opportunities. Sixty percent of the business executives in India and the U.S. believe they get good ROI when working in the other country. According to it; seven in ten business leaders interviewed believe that U.S.-India business relations are headed in the right direction and more than eight in ten expect this relationship to improve over the next few years. From a list of 11 foreign countries, Indian business executives see the most opportunities in the U.S. and U.S. executives say India has the best opportunities. However, some negatives were also highlighted in the survey. According to it: 52% of US executives believe, Infrastructure related to power shortages and transportation are the biggest hurdles they see in terms of doing business. Un-
Sanjay Puri, Chairman, USINPAC ethical business practices & corruption in government departments are two of the other top issues. For Indian businesses the negative was that Indian Executives face difficulty in obtaining work visas, double taxation & economic uncertainty while doing business in the US. Says Sanjay Puri, Chairman, USINPAC, said, “We instituted this first of its kind survey to gauge the sentiments of the business fraternity in both countries. The U.S.India business communities are keen to work with each other and the USINPAC Business Barometer is a testimony to this fact. The Indian origin communities in the United States and other countries around the world are enthused with the election of Modi government in India, and are confident that under the new government in India led by PM Modi, the key concern of the business fraternity, i.e. infrastructural issues will be addressed. We estimate that a total investment of about $1.5 trillion is required over the next five years to finance India’s infrastructure needs. U.S. will be a key contributor to this.”

ARIES (March 21 - April 20): The way you deal with people will help you to overcome delays and snags at work. This applies to personal relationships too. Balance your work activities and social obligations. Do not overdo things today for you could end up with a minor health problem. It is unfortunate that your mate or beloved may have lined up something special for you this evening and you will be in no mood for lighter moments.
TAURUS (April 21 - May 20): Social events, get-togethers, discussion and trips, all augur well for you. Those who love you seem to expect only the best from you. Of course you know that you will be able to fulfill their expectations. Being more thoughtful and finding time for your mate will certainly go in your favor. A trip is in the offing for some of you to see a loved one.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 20): Uncertainties in job or personal relationship are cleared today. An incident will change boring routine to an exciting one. You will receive wide acclaim but sadly not much income. You may have to look for some other source of money to keep you going. Tender loving care will help mend hurt egos. At home too you may have to make more of an effort to keep everyone happy.
CANCER (June 21 - July 21): For further growth be patient and dedicated to your ideals. The process is a tedious one. You should be paying more attention to finances but make no hasty decisions. Think in terms of lasting savings and not short term profits. You will have a pleasant philosophical experience. A long drawn out affair could now be proving to be tiresome. It seems complacency is making your love life a bit dull.
LEO (July 22 - August 21): With all else moving along in the right direction in your life you may still hanker for that elusive job or position. May be the time has come for your to tap your resources and see what can be done. This is the time to make a move towards fulfilling aspirations. A new person in your circle of people will hold your attention. Proceed cautiously if you want this association to grow meaningfully.
VIRGO (August 22 - September 21): You get a chance to succeed in your efforts to obtain vital contract. It necessitates close cooperation and trust with your partner. You will have to be practical and less emotional while taking a decision which conflicts with what you believe in and what you should do. Someone you know or lives nearby may suddenly take more interest in you or your activities. Be cordial and friendly but do not jump to conclusions.
LIBRA (September 22 - October 22): You will have a busy day at work but not much of appreciation or any rewards. Even if there is no apparent progress or growth in your work, do not make matters worse by seeking a change of starting a new project. You need to be patient and not complain but retain your job. Love and romance should get priority over other social activities, and responsibilities especially since you have been rather busy of late.
SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21): Catch up and make good earlier losses. You should guard against a complacent attitude and keep up the pace of work. An important assignment will need all your attention. Any problems that you encounter will be overcome easily. Sudden monetary gains are likely from where you least expected. You can look forward to an enjoyable evening with your beloved and friends to a club or favorite resort. On the whole it is a good day.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 December 20): You may decide to restructure your work and have a totally different approach about the way you handle things. If you work out your plans with this new method success is bound to come your way. Partnerships will go in for some expansion of current business interests. Home and family affairs are important. Your mate or beloved may be unreasonable and demand attention and you could feel helpless.
CAPRICORN (December 21 - January 19): A major achievement in your career is indicated. Financial gains are foreseen through trading or commission. Employed can look forward to news of an increment or promotion. A journey for work or religious function is likely. Someone may go out of the way to flirt outrageously with you. Do not think that your talents have been recognized. The person may have some ulterior designs.
AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18): News of a new contract or favorable job offer is likely. Outstation work would turn out to more rewarding and add to your experience. New business proposals lead to gain. Investments made now will grow fast but you should not hang on to your gains for too long. A chance encounter with a person of opposite sex will assume romantic undertones. Try not to be too aggressive, be unassuming.
PISCES (February 19 - March 20): Avoid arguments with colleagues. Remain calm against all odds. Worries are part of life. Find time to be with friends who inspire you positively. Differences with your mate over minor issues are likely but with foresight you can avoid touchy subjects which invite strong feelings. You cannot wish away mistakes you have made. Show remorse and no attitude.

MYSTERY SPINNER SUNIL NARINE REPORTED FOR SUSPECT ACTION
Afternoon Despatch & Courier www.afternoondc.in
MUMBAI | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2014
H
YDERABAD: West Indies mystery spinner Sunil Narine has on Monday been reported for suspect bowling action during a Champions League T20 match between KKR and Dolphins, here yesterday in what turned out to be another ICC crackdown on chucking. The CLT20 orgamizing committee issued a media advisory late Monday night, confirming the development, that on-field umpires Anil Chaudhary and Chettihody Shamshuddin along with third umpire Kumar Dharmasena have expressed their suspicion about the quicker delivery bowled by Narine. "Mr Narine was reported by on-field umpires Anil Chaudhary and Chettithody Shamshuddin, along with third umpire Kumar Dharamsena at the conclusion of the match. The report specifically relates to the quicker ball bowled by Mr. Narine," the press release states. "Under the CLT20 Suspected Illegal Bowling Action policy, Mr. Narine may request an Official Assessment from the BCCI Suspect Bowling Action Committee. Mr. Narine has been placed on the warning list and may continue to be selected to play and bowl for his team in a match," the release further stated.
Wushu gold medalist caught doping at Asiad
INCHEON: The Olympic Council of Asia says a wushu gold medalist from Malaysia has been kicked out of the Asian Games for doping and stripped of her medals. Council director General Husain al Musallam said in a statement on Tuesday that the banned stimulant sibutramine was found in a urine sample taken from Tai Cheau Xuen after competition on Sept. 20. He said Tai was disqualified and stripped of her gold medal in the nanquan martial arts style category and bronze in the nandao category. It wasn't immediately clear whether Tai was still in Incheon.
However if Narine is reported again for the same problem, he will be debarred from bowling further in the Champions League T20 although he can play as batsman. "Under the CLT20 Suspected Illegal Bowling Action policy, if a player receives a report while on the warning list, the player shall be suspended from bowling for the remainder of the tournament and from bowling in any matches organised by the BCCI until such date as he is cleared. A player suspended from bowling may continue to be selected to play in matches, however he will not be entitled to bowl." Narine has been KKR's primary weapon over the past four seasons and has helped the franchise co-owned by Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan to win two IPL titles in last three He is also on top of wickettakers list with 11 scalps to his credit in the current edition of CLT20. The ICC has instructed the on-field umpires to be vigilant about suspected chuckers with Pakistan's off-spinner Saeed Ajmal already suspended from bowling in competitive cricket. In this tournament, two Lahore Lions bowlers Adnan Rasool and Mohammed Hafeez have been reported for suspect actions.
Scorchers beat Lions, pave way for CSK to enter CLT20 semis B
ANGALORE: Perth Scorchers' Mitchell Marsh not just stopped Lahore Lions from making it to the semifinals of the Oppo Champions League Twenty20 with a threewicket win in their last group match here but also paved the way for Chennai Super Kings' entry into the lastfour stage. Marsh scored an unbeaten 63 off just 38 balls with the help of seven boundaries and three sixes, besides putting up a crucial unbroken 68 runs with Brad Hogg (28 no; 19b 2X4 2X6)) to overhaul a modest target of 125 with six balls to spare at the Chinnaswamy stadium here.
Earlier, the Scorchers had restricted the Pakistani side for a mere 124 for six in their allotted 20 overs and then reached 130 for seven in 19 overs. Had the Lahore Lions pulled off a victory by a margin of 46 runs against the Scorchers, they would have progressed to the semifinals by displacing Chennai Super Kings from second place in the Group A standings. Hogg hit Adnan Rosool for a six in the 14th over to knock Lahore out of the tournament, while sending CSK into the last-four stage. Kolkata Knight Riders were already through to the semifinals after topping Group A, having registered
four victory in as many matches. The Lions needed to bundle out the Scorchers for 78 to make the semis but failed to contain their opponents. It was Scorchers bowlers who wreaked havoc as paceman Joel Paris (3/22) and Mitchell Marsh (2/12) shared five wickets between them. Saad Nasim top-scored for the Pakistani side with an unbeaten 69 off 55 balls, studded with five fours and a six. Put into bat, Lions lost three early wickets with just two runs on the board. Paris accounted for the wickets of the two openers in Nasir Jamshed (1) and Umar Siddiq (1).

Yogeshwar’s semis bout at Asiad best ever I have seen: Sushil By Kushan Sarkar
N
EW DELHI: They both are champions in their own right and no wonder Sushil Kumar was absolutely ecstatic in the manner his close friend Yogeshwar Dutt clinched the first gold medal for India in Asian Games wrestling in 28 years. "The manner in which Yogesh (as he is affectionately called) won the semi-final bout against the Chinese wrestler Katai Yerlanbieke was amazing. It was probably the best I have seen him fight as he scripted an unbelievable come-from-behind win. His performance has boosted the morale of our wrestlers," Sushil told PTI on the sidelines of an event organised by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Asked to assess the overall performance of the wrestlers at the ongoing Asian Games, one of India's greatest Olympians said, "We won three medals at Gunagzhou. This time our tally has increased to five medals so far. Obviously, there has been an upswing and no one is happier than me. "Bajrang (silver) is a very talented youngster and will only get better. I am also very happy for Narsingh (bronze). There is a slight disappointment as we all expected gold from Amit but this is sport
and this can happen. Amit will certainly come back stronger after this Asian Games. I am hopeful that our boys in Greco-Roman will also get a few medals," said the two-time Olympic medallist. Sushil said his decision to not go to the Asiad was because he wanted to see how a youngster can perform in his category. "I didn't go to the Asian Games as this was a conscious plan to experiment with a youngster in my category. I am planning to make a comeback at the World Championship in the United States and also take part in the major Grand Prix events next year, so that I am fit and ready for the Rio Olympics in 2016," said Sushil. The humblest of sportspersons that one would ever come across, Sushil was all praise for swimmer Sandeep Sejwal and gymnast Deepa Karmakar. "A medal in swimming is a rarity and Sandeep Sejwal should be lauded for his achievement at the Asian Games. It shows we are coming up in swimming. Also I would like to congratulate young gymnast Deepa, who won a medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. These youngsters should be nurtured so that they produce better results in coming days," said Sushil.

Sarita robbed of win at Asiad, Indian boxing contingent files protest against Sarita's loss; Mary in final

Indian boxer Lalshram Sarita Devi being consoled by her husband after she was knocked out of the 60 kg boxing semifinal bout against Korea at the Asian Games in Incheon on Tuesday. Sarita Devi controversially settled for a bronze medal after losing her bout against South Korea's Jina Park despite a dominating performance which left the home favourite with a bloodied nose.

SARITA DEVI, INDIAN BOXER
I
NCHEON: Controversy hit the Asian Games boxing competition after India's L Sarita Devi (60kg) had to settle for a bronze medal despite dominating her semifinal bout even as M C Mary Kom (51kg) continued her winning run to enter the summit clash of the mega-event. The Indian woman boxer in fray, Pooja Rani (75kg), also had to settle for a bronze after losing a closely-contested semifinal bout to China's Li Qian. But what triggered massive outrage was Sarita's loss which left the Manipuri in tears. Up against home favourite Jina Park, Sarita, the Commonwealth Games silver-medallist, went down 0-3 despite clearly being the better boxer. Sarita simply pummelled her rival with her flurry of quicksilver blows -at times raining four to her

It was pre-decided, the 3-0 verdict is a clear cut indication. The Korean deserved to have been given many standing counts, going by what happened in the ring, and the bout should have been stopped," he said. "Sarita was a clear-cut winner but money has talked here and the judges deserve to be thrown out. It happened in Seoul during the 1988 Olympic Games, it's happening now again. Nothing seems to have changed. The new rules have made no difference," he fumed. Prior to the action-charged
four rounds combined while the third put her 39-37 ahead on points. Mary was a clear winner even though she was the shorter of the two southpaws, she easily came inside the Vietnamese boxer's territory to score with jabs and rights to the face. Mary, who won a bronze in the 2010 Asian Games and the 2012 Olympic Games before taking a break from the sport, is now assured of at least a silver medal. However, Sarita's shock defeat also left her with mixed emotions. "I am shocked and disappointed. Sarita was the clear winner. This should not have happened," she said. She will now fight against Zhaina Shekerbekova of Kazakhstan who earned a 3-

In the end, all three ringside judges ruled in favour of the Korean by identical 39-37 margins. The ringside judges were Braham Mohamad of Tunisia, Albino Foti of Italy and Mariusz Josef Gorny of Poland. Immediately after the bout, a tearful Sarita broke down while talking to journalists. "All my hard work has come to nought. It has happened to me but kindly see that this kind of injustice is not meted out to anyone else in the competition. I request you," she said tearfully with folded hands. "If they wanted to award the bout to her, then why allow us to fight in the first place," she added. Her husband and former footballer Thoiba Singh was even more furious and shouted obscenities at the ring officials, saying it was a clear case of cheating.
Indian boxing contingent files protest against Sarita's loss
An outraged Indian boxing contingent today lodged a protest and demanded a review of L Sarita Devi's semifinal bout in the Asian Games after the veteran was adjudged to have lost despite a dominating performance against home favourite Jina Park. The Indian boxing contingent lodged a protest after paying a USD 500 fee, which would not be refunded if the review upholds the original

Greco-Roman grapplers disappoint after freestyle success
NCHEON: After a fine performance by India in the freestyle category, the Greco-Roman grapplers did not have the kind of start they would have liked as all three wrestlers fighting on the day failed to finish on the podium in the Asian Games. Krishankant Yadav had a great opportunity to finish third on the podium but he went down to Iran's Saeid Abdvali 0-3 in the bronze medal play-off round in men's 71kg Greco-Roman wrestling. The Iranian was by far the more dominant of the two as he grabbed three quick points to lead 3-0 after the first half. In the second half, he earned three more points to leave the Indian with no chance of making a comeback. At the end of the match, the grappler from Iran made it 6-0 to clinch the bronze medal. Earlier, two more Indians in the fray -- Ravinder Singh and Harpreet Singh -- lost their respective quarterfinal bouts to crash out of the tournament. While Ravinder was defeated by Kazakhstan's Almat Kebispayev 0-3 in a 'decision by points' verdict in the the 59kg category, Harpreet lost 1-3 to Uzbekistan's Saldadze Besiki in 80kg division. Even Yadav had lost his quarterfinal bout after going down to Jung JiHyun of Korea 4-0 (Great Superiority), but he got lucky to make it to the bronze medal round as his opponent reached the final.

BATTLE ROYALE AWAITS India set up a revenge clash against Pak in Asiad hockey final By S S Ramaswamy
I
NCHEON: Akashdeep Singh scored a fabulous field goal against hosts South Korea to guide Indian men's hockey team into the finals of the Asian Games after a gap of 12 years, setting up a summit showdown with arch-rivals Pakistan. After squandering at least three gilt-edged chances to take the lead in the first two quarters, Akashdeep (44th minute) received the ball inside the striking circle and without turning he flicked it through his legs in spectacular style into the goal to register a 1-0 win over former champions South Korea at the Seonhak Hockey Stadium here. The Indian men's hockey team, which last made it to the final of the Asiad way back in 2002 Busan Games, will now face Pakistan in the final on Thursday, with a direct ticket for the 2016 Rio

Olympics up for grabs. In another semifinal, Pakistan eked out a hard-fought 6-5 win over 2010 Guangzhou Games silver medallist Malaysia in the second semifinal via shoot-off after both the teams failed to break the deadlock in the regulation 60 minutes. The title clash against Pakistan
midfield, with captain Sardar Singh marshalling the resources, also gave the extra edge to the attack with some excellent passes but the frontline was again guilty of squandering a few very good chances. India should have been at least two goals up before the halfway stage of the match but Dharamvir Singh was guilty of frittering away the opportunities. India had the first shave at the goal in the fifth minute of the game from a counterattack but Dharamvir missed a sitter as he overrun a pass from S V Sunil with only the Korean goalkeeper Lee to beat. Three minutes into the second quarter, India earned two back-toback penalty corners but Korean custodian Lee made a fantastic save to his right to deny V R Raghunath a goal. In the fifth minute of the second quarter Dharamvir was again found wanting when the rebound came to him off the Korean custodian's pads but he missed the chance. Then Ramandeep shot wide on the run from the top of the circle, a difficult chance before the teams trooped off for the big break deadlocked at 0-0.
will have to overcome Japan against whom they lost in the bronze medal play-off fours years ago in Guangzhou. The Indians eves have a golden opportunity tomorrow to avenge upon their narrow 0-1 loss to Japan in the 2010 Asian Games to miss out on a bronze medal. The match against Japan will also provide the Indians a chance to better their fourth place finish in the Guangzhou edition of the Games. The Indians eves, however, will have to utilise their chances more if they desire to beat Japan today. Against Korea yesterday, they created numerous scoring opportuni-
ties but what did them was their finishing. India's chief coach Neil Hawgood too emphasied on the fact when he said that they can't afford to let off scoring chances. "In the previous match, we created enough chances in the last half of the game but unfortunately, we failed to materialise those chances. Now, we have shifted our focus on Japan. If we start well and pull out our best in the last two quarters as well as we did against Malaysia, we will have a very good chance of beating Japan for the first time in two years," Hawgood said.

will also provide India an opportunity to avenge upon their 1-2 defeat against the same opponents in the pool stages of the ongoing Games. Earlier, a 1-0 win was India's eighth against Korea in the Asian Games in 14 matches and was the 29th overall in 72 encounters in all competitions. The win also helped India reach the final, assuring them of at least the silver medal, for the first time since the 2002 Busan Games. They did not make the semis in 2006 at Doha and then four years ago they were shocked by Malaysia in the semi-finals at Guangzhou. The Indians were by far the dominant side on display against Korea in the entire 60 minutes today and controlled the proceedings from the word go. The Koreans played catch-up hockey throughout the match but failed to break the resolute Indian defence. There was hardly any clear scoring opportunity for the Koreans, whereas India threatened the opponent goal throughout the encounter. There was plan, purpose and poise in India's display and the major difference was the defense, which held well right through. The

GOWDA SETTLES FOR SILVER, LUKA IN FINAL I
NCHEON: Vikas Gowda settled for a silver in men's discus throw as he failed to mount any serious challenge to his old nemesis Ehsan Hadadi of Iran while Tintu Luka qualified for the women's 800m race final on the fourth day of athletics competitions in the Asian Games. Gowda, who recently won the gold in Glasgow Commonwealth Games, came up with a below-par best effort of 62.58m which he did in his second attempt to fetch the silver at the Incheon Asiad Main Stadium here. The Indian has a season's best of 65.62m while his personal best -- also the national record -- is 66.28m. Hadadi, who was struggling for form this season despite being a preGames favourite, outperformed Gowda with a best throw of 65.11m to clinch the gold and run away with a hat-trick of titles. He has also won gold in 2006 and 2010 Asian Games. Gowda had finished third in 2006 Doha Games. The Iranian Asian record holder with 69.32m, one of the top discus throwers in the world, threw the disc better than Gowda's 62.58m four times today as he also had 64.89, 63.77 and 64.47 in his fourth to sixth attempts. Gowda, who had won gold in Glasgow with 63.64m, had three foul throws in his last three attempts as he failed to mount any challenge to his Iranian rival and had to settle for the silver which is the ninth medal from Indian track and field athletes in four days. It was a case of Gowda hitting Hadadi hurdle once again as he has done better than the Iranian only once in 17 clashes he had in his career, including today's final. The lone instance when Gowda did better than Hadadi was in the Doha leg of the prestigious IAAF Diamond League Meeting in May when the Indian was second while the Iranian Vikas Gowda competes in the Men’s Discus throw final at Asian Games in Incheon on Tuesday. [R] Tintu Lukka, centre, leads in the women’s 800m heats. was seventh.
In the only other final involving an Indian, national record holder Siddhanth Thingalaya finished sixth in men's 110m hurdles in 13.73secs. The Indian could not touch his season's best of 13.65secs, which he did in August at Patiala. Half milers medal prospect Tintu Luka and Sushma Devi qualified for the women's 800m finals. Luka, the Asian leader with 2:00.56, won heat number one in 2:04.28 while Sushma was third in heat number two in 2:03.54. Defending champion in women's 400m hurdles, Ashwini Akkunji qualified for the final after finishing second in the heats in 57.67secs. Ashwini has a season's best of 57.43secs while his personal best is 56.15. In men's 800m, Sajeesh Joseph qualified for the final round after finishing third in his heat in 1:49.90. However, another defending champion Joseph Abraham, failed to qualify for the men's 400m hurdles final after finishing third in heat number 1 in 51.04 though he was the first to set out of the block.
Indian men and women kabaddi teams reach semis
NCHEON: Six-time champions India notched up their third win on the trot with a 23-11 victory over arch-rivals Pakistan to top their group and storm into the semifinals of the men's kabaddi competitions in the Asian Games. India, who have won the kabaddi gold since the sport was added in the 1990 Asian Games, seemed to be heading towards a thrashing of the Pakistanis as they led 17-4 at the halftime. But Pakistan, who were the silver winners in 2006 Asian Games, came back strongly in the second session in which they scored seven points as against six by the Indians. But the Pakistani fightback was too late in the day and the huge first half lead gave

the Indians a comfortable in the end. India, who have earlier beaten Bangladesh and Thailand, topped Group A with an all-win record. Indian women's kabaddi team also produced a clinical performance to outwit hosts South Korea 45-26 to enter the semi-finals. They topped the group en route their last four entry. The Indians, who beat Bangladesh 29-18 in their lung opener, took a commanding 27-10 half time lead. They secured six points by packing off the entire Korean team thrice in the match, including twice in the opening half. The bulk of their points, 32, came through touching or bundling out the rival players during raids or defending. They also got two bonus points for touching the bonus point
line in the rival court. The Koreans never really threatened the Indian women though late in the second half their raiders twice packed off two rival players. For India, Mamatha was the dominant raider along with captain Tejaswini Bai while Pooja Thakur also did her bit. Korea's Shin Somin suffered an ankle injury during a raid and had to be taken off the court. India await the runners-up of Group B in the semi finals scheduled for October 2. Indian skipper Tejeswini said she expected a better fight from the Koreans who were being coached by an Indian. "Today's match was onesided, but Korea is a very good team that has trained under an Indian coach. We were expecting better fight from them," she said.
Latika Bhandari enters 53kg quarters
India started their taekwondo campaign on a bright note as Latika Bhandari made it to the quarter-finals of the women's 53 kg event by defeating Farzona Radzhabova of Tajikistan in a one-sided bout at the Asian Games. The 19-year-old Latika won the bout 7-2 with a judcious blend of attack mixed with defence. Latika used the 'Ap Chagi' technique (Front kick) to good use as she straightaway earned three points in the first round. Out of her seven points, Latika got three points because of the passivity shown by the Tajik girl, who refused to attack.
Sailor Dutta’s show is why we objected to ‘no-cost’: SAI DG
EW DELHI: Sports Authority of India Director General Jiji Thomson today said sailor Upamanyu Dutta's shoddy performance at the ongoing Asian Games is the reason why SAI had objected to athletes travelling to the event on a "no cost to government" basis. "Look at sailor Upamanyu's performance. He finished last in his event. He got a court order in his favour and travelled to Incheon at his own cost. This is why we don't want to encourage 'No cost to Government' policy," Thomson told PTI on the sidelines of CRPF event. "The flip side of travelling on one's own cost is getting those 10 points that one gets if he or she represents the country at events like Asian Games and Olympics. A lot of people will use this 'own cost' thing to their advantage. If this is encouraged, you will see a lot of poor yet talented kids getting deprived," Thomson said in his side of the explanation. Thomson admitted that India has not progressed as an Olympic nation even after its best ever haul of six medals at the London Games in 2012 and the main reason is lack of bench strength. "I don't think we have made a lot of progress since 2012 London Games. I believe, we have a lot to worry about the bench strength in a lot of sports. Look at badminton. After Saina (Nehwal) and (P V) Sindhu, we don't have another player of that calibre whom we can look upto," Thomson said. The SAI DG said initially, they had set the medal expectation at 70 but now it seems that "we will be getting around 50-52 medals which is not bad at all". "Look, you have to understand that we lost out on a number of medals. Had Somdev Devvarman been there, it was a case of sureshot gold medal. Sushil Kumar was another gold medal contender. Had BCCI agreed to send even their 'B' team, there were two gold medals there for the taking. Our athlete Dutee Chand was a contender to win a gold medal in 100m sprint. So in a way, we lost out on at least 5-6 gold medals," Thomson said.
