n the very first day of the rains, Mumbai's life lines came to stop for several hours, especially on the Central and Harbour corridors. The six-hour spell of rain saw tracks flooded along all suburban routes, making it difficult for trains to move ahead. Forty-eight local services on the Harbour Line and another 39 local services on the Central Railway were terminated due to heavy rains and water logging on the railway tracks on Wednesday morning. Railway officials justified the mess saying that heavy rainfall was recorded in a short period and that caused water logging and affected train services. Water logging was reported at Kurla, Ghatkopar, Vikhroli and Bhandup stations on Central Line and Govandi and Chunabhatti on the Harbour line, affecting service between 11.30 am and to 2.09 pm. Services limped back to normal in the second half of the day. Even long route trains on the Central line were affected. Most of the tracks in the suburbs were seen submerged in water. Several local trains were seen standing one behind the other on the flooded Azad Shrivastav | ADC

Rail tracks were submerged under water between Kurla and Sion and people were seen walking on the tracks, as Lord Ganesh sat aside. and using plastic is one of the main reasons for water logging. I believe we should stop holding the government responsible and start taking action ourselves for a better Mumbai. Aanad Raut (22), Photographer: Rains are a boon for a photographer. However travelling in locals is a major problems during the rains. Now after the forthcoming elections, I am looking forward to a clean and better

tracks by the Modi Governement. Monika (20), Student: I had a seminar at 11 am and had to reach my college in Matunga. I'm stuck in Ghatkopar and it is 12 pm now. There are no trains! I do not have any idea what to do. Anupama (30), P.R Executive: This is just the starting, it is soon going to get worse. I strongly believe that the railway officials are responsible. Our

authorities always say they are prepared for the rains but these are mere promises. I do not think I'll be able to reach my office in time. Raju lal (35), a daily wage worker: My wife will be operated upon today in the KEM Hospital at 11.30 am and I don't think I will be able to reach. tracks. Officer-goers, with not many options, alighted from trains and were seen walking beside the railway tracks to reach their offices on time. The Central Railway suburban services Down local line was disrupted between 11.30 am and 1.37 pm and Up local line between 11.50 am and 2.09 pm. Similarly, up Harbour Line was disrupted between 11.00 am to 1.34 pm and down Harbour Line was disrupted between 11.00 am to 1.01 pm. According to railway officials, slow locals were running 15 to 30 minutes and Harbour line services were running 30 to 40 minutes behind their scheduled time. Shuttle services were running between between Mankhurd and Panvel during this period. Citing Indian Meteorological reports, Central Railway Public Relations Officer Narendra Patil, “Some pockets in the suburbs recorded more than 134 mm rainfall. Due to the downpour, railway tracks were submerged in water and moving

trains was difficult.” He added, “When the water was up to four inches, authorities decided to let the trains move to facilitate commuters. When the automatic machines were finding difficulties, taking considerable risk, we carried out manual clamping and the service kept moving. When water levels increased to more than four inches, on a safety issue, services were stopped.” According to the Indian Meteorological Department, Colaba recorded 10 mm whereas Santacruz recorded 180 mm rainfall till evening. When asked about development of nullah cleaning work in the railway premises, railway officials said, “Nullah cleaning was done in the railway premises. However, heavy rain in a short period caused the flooding.” The ADC spoke to commmuters of the Central Railways, most of who seemed agitated. Aarti Shah (35), Environmentalist, believes that we as citizens are equally responsible for these conditions: We are making Mumbai worse

n the day and age where cardiac ailments are not uncommon among the younger age group in the country, Dr B K Goyal, chief cardiac surgeon at Bombay hospital has found an example of a healthy individual in a 95-yearold freedom fighter. He attributes this to him being active and leading a healthy life. “Bhiku Bhilare (95), who underwent an angioplasty on Monday at Bombay hospital, is an exemplary case,” said Dr Goyal. Bhilare, who is the secretary general of Maharashtra Association of Freedom Fighters, was brought to the Bombay hospital on Saturday from his office at Mantralaya when he complained of chest pain and was sweating profusely. An angiography revealed a 90 per cent block in the main artery of the heart. “Performing an angioplasty on such an old patient is rare but the parameters required to undergo angioplasty were alright. So we went ahead with it,” said Dr Goyal who conducted the procedure on Bhilare. “What is exemplary about this case is that despite his age he is so

95-year-old Bhiku Bhilare recuperating at the Bombay Hospital. fit. He has no history of any heart ailments before. This blockage was because of age and other factors like blood pressure and diabetes that come with age. But for 95, he is very healthy. This man used to go to his office at the mantralaya every day and work for eight hours. This was his fitness level. Even today, he has the energy level of a 75-year-old. He is an example of how to lead a healthy life and how being active helps one to age in a healthy way,” added Dr Goyal. Bhilare has been prescribed some medications and has been asked to lead a normal life. He will be discharged today (July 3). “At this age, we don’t suggest any lifestyle or dietary modifications as they are not very helpful. We also don’t suggest any precautions. He can continue living the way he has been living till date,” said Dr Goyal. shwetha.kannan@afternoondc.in

fter facing various issues and a long wait of three years, the Mumbai University (MU) has finally stepped ahead to open the gates for students at its Thane Sub center. Though there were issues raised by the senators of the varsity for ignoring the construction works, the University has kept its word to open the center by August 2014. The sub center will be starting its pilot year with courses of MBA and Law. In order to reduce the distance traveled by students from Thane to the Kalina campus, the varsity had planned to set up its sub-center in Thane city. The land at Balkumbh in Thane had been finalised by the varsity, and in the year 2010, the Thane Municipal Corporation had provided seven acres of its land to the university for the purpose. The prime land was valued at Rs 100 crore, and Rajesh Tope, Minister of Higher and Technical Education, had then said, “The MU had finalised a budget of Rs.5 crore for the development of the sub-centre but no work had been taken up by the varsity or the ministry to construct it.” In the year 2011-2012, the MU had fix a budget Rs.3 crore for the

The Thane sub-center

Thane sub-centre which was later increased to Rs.5 crore in the year 2012-2013 and in the on going academic year 2013-2014, the varsity has budgeted a provision of Rs 65 crores for the same. Last November, the MU had stated that the subcenter would be ready by 2014. When the sub center starts on August 1, it will be introducing the Five Year Integrated Law Degree Programme, BBA-LLB (Hons) and a Five Year Integrated Management Programme, BMS-MBA. Since 2013, the ADC had been reporting about the sub-centre which remained a barren land in the midst of Thane, with encroachments by people from nearby localities. The land remained untouched and no construction work was undertaken by the varsity or education ministry. The ADC spoke to Dr Naresh Chandra, Pro Vice Chancellor, MU, who said “The MU will be starting the first two courses of Law and Management in the initial year. It will mean less travel for students from the central parts of the city. More courses will be added in the sub-center as the years pass.”

LCB busts gang that lured people with gold-plated pieces and later enacted fake raids to con them again

By Suresh Golani

S

leuths of the Local Crime Branch (LCB) unit of the Thane (rural) police claim to have busted a gang of conmen who duped people by luring them with gold biscuits at cheaper rates. The gang members would then pose as cops in an elaborately planned drama to cheat their targets. While three persons, identified as Raju Seth alias Kisan (36), Deepak Seth alias Shantilal (38) and Mohammed Gaus Sharif Shaikh (34), have been arrested, while their accomplice, Santosh, is said to Thane (rural) LCB team with the three gang members, yesterday.

Just to tarnish image: Sawant By Zuber Ansari

F

ollowing the allegations made by a woman that Shiv Sena MLA Prakash Bala Sawant threatened to strip her and beat her over a property dispute, defending himself, the MLA said, “All the allegations which were made by the lady against me are politically motivated, I had not abused her or threatened her. While doing a speedy investigation into the case, the Kherwadi police, on Wednesday recorded statements of three of the victim’s family members. She had lodged the complaint against Sawant on Monday. The issue is compared with that of TMC MP Tapas Pal, who also made derogatory statements against women. The 64-year old

Sawant and the 50-year old victim are residents of Gandhi Nagar Society in Kherwadi in Bandra (E). As per the police, the incident took place at around 8 pm on Monday. Talking to the ADC, MLA Bala Sawant said, “On the day of incident, the lady, along with her two male colleagues, was standing near the shop. I passed from between them and one of them began smiling at me without any reason, so I just asked them why they did that. Almost one hour later I came to know that the lady was sitting inside the police station and trying to lodge an FIR against me.” Sawant added, “Later, when my supporters, including the women's wing president, came to know that an

FIR process was going on, they assembled inside the police station. I am the person who controlled the crowd. My ladies wing workers were demanding action against the complainant, but I asked them leave the police station. I know this lady since more than 25 years. There are some building redevelopment issues in our locality, but one group which is against us is using the woman to tarnish my image.” “We have recorded statements of three family members of the victim and would also record statements of the neighbours and would ascertain the facts. If the allegations are found to be true, action would be taken accordingly,” said police inspector Sanjay Gaikwad.

Doomed by ‘Dhoom’ bikers By Suresh Golani

T

he menace of Dhoom-style biking and stunt-racing is getting grave every passing day as youngsters can be spotted performing dangerous stunts and races on the roads of Mira Bhayandar. While the police do not seem to have much control over such reckless riding, the speedsters continue to pose a serious threat to the life and limb of motorists and pedestrians. Anil Khedekar, a veteran journalist working for a reputed Marathi newspaper became the latest victim. On his way home in Mira Road, Khedekar was knocked down by an over-speeding biker near the Fly-Over-Bridge on Tuesday evening. The errant biker, who was apparently in racing mode with his other bike-borne friends, fled the

spot. Khedekar suffered deep head injuries and is recuperating at the Life-Line Hospital. The situation becomes scary, especially in the night, as the young bikers come on the roads from nowhere and start performing stunts and races, throwing caution and rule books to the winds.“Yes, there are numerous complaints about recklessly driven bikes on roads of the twin-city. However, this menace cannot be stopped without the help of the city police. We are in talks with them on chalking out an elaborate roadmap and shortly, a comprehensive strategy to end the menace will be implemented,” said Police Inspector (Traffic) Chandrakant Gundge. Although aware about the menace, traffic personnel are worried about the dangers

involved in forcibly trying to stop the stunt bikers. “Unlike other violators, these bikers drive at a neckbreaking speed. Coming in their way to stop them can lead to casualties for the rider as well as the traffic personnel,” said an official from the Traffic wing of the Thane (rural) police. As per the proposed plan, the moment a biker is found speeding, the police picket ahead will be immediately alerted and the biker will be forced to slow down before he is stopped and taken to task. Apparently inspired by the Bollywood blockbuster sequels of Dhoom, the young bikers had restricted their activities to deserted stretches, but nowadays, they fearlessly carry out stunts and races on the roads during busy vehicular movement.

be absconding. According to the police, the gang lured people with fake gold biscuits and used to crack a deal. After being convinced that they had zeroed in on their target, two members of the gang would meet the target with fake gold biscuits that were made from yellow-coloured metal. While the duo engaged their target in transactions of the deal, their accomplices, posing as cops, would raid the spot and extract money under the threat of lodging a case, and then flee with the cash. “While investigating a case of robbery registered by complainant Vilas Shengre at the Navghar police station in Bhayandar, we arrested the trio who confessed to their crime,” confirmed Assistant Police Inspector Atul Aher.

However during investigations it was learnt that Vilas, a resident of Bhandup, had misled the police by stating that four people had snatched cash of Rs.1,12,000 from him during his visit to Jesal Park on June 17. “In fact, Vilas too had fallen for the cheap gold trap laid by the conmen, but fearing action against him, he had opted to register a case of robbery,” said an investigating official. Not ruling out the involvement of the quartet in other similar crimes in the region, the LCB unit has handed over the case to the Navghar police station for further investigations. While the accused have been remanded to police custody, a manhunt has been launched to trace their absconding accomplice.

daughter to school in such a scenario.” According to Laxman Vhatkar, Chief Engineer of the BMC's Storm Water Drain department, “Today's water logging was mainly because of the roadside water entering, and also because the work was not done properly by the respective civic wards.” He further added, “The Irla Pumping Station's gate was closed, which was a great relief for some residential localities of Vile Parle and Andheri.” The civic employees were seen working at Hindmata, where the water level was high, and they had to keep the man-hole cover open so that the water could drain into it faster. When asked about the railway tracks getting submerged due to failure in clearing the nullahs besides the railway tracks, Vhatkar said “The civic administration had allotted Rs. 3.28 crore for clearing the nullahs near the railway tracks. However, as the railways are a government body we cannot take any action against them.” He further added, “We are awaiting reports to come from their end, once the reports are in, we will come to know the amount of work they have done.” As per the data received from the BMC's Disaster Management Department, from morning 8 am to 4 pm,

the city received 27.78 mm of rainfall, with eastern suburbs receiving 111.98mm and western suburbs 107.60mm. Colaba received 0.8 mm and Santacruz 153.6mm. The Disaster management department also stated that there were cases of 33 tree falling reported, in the city: eight, eastern suburbs: 11 and the western suburbs: 14. "So far, we had weak spells of rains in Mumbai. A low pressure has now formed over the Bay of Bengal which has caused rainfall in the city. We expect the rainfall to last with the same intensity for the next 48 hours and after that it may reduce," said V K Rajeev, Director of Weather forecasting, Mumbai Meteorological Department. Emboldened by its performance in the LS polls, the NCP demands that it should get to contest 144 of the 288 Assembly seats

By A Special Correspondent

T

he rift between the Congress and NCP is once again out in the open. This time around, NCP leader and the Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has demanded an equal number of seats for his party in the forthcoming Assembly elections. Congress-NCP, the alliance partners in the state, who were bickering over Lok Sabha defeat just a few days ago, are now at loggerheads over seat allocation in the state Assembly election scheduled in October. Earlier, the NCP had made it clear that the party wanted larger number of seats in the elections. However, yesterday, Ajit Pawar categorically pointed out that the party should get 144 out of 288 seats.

While addressing the party workers Pawar said, “NCP has won twice the number of seats as compared to Congress in the state in recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. The Congress won two whereas the NCP won four seats. As NCP’s strength in the state has grown in as compared to Congress, we should get 144 seats, an equal share with our ally Congress in the ensuing Assembly polls”. “In 2009 election, the Congress had used similar argument against the NCP to contest more seats. So, using the same formula, this time, the NCP should get equal number of seats,” he added further. “The party workers should visit every household and inform the citizens about the important decisions taken by the party at the state and

Central level. The party suffered due to the absence of communication during the Lok Sabha elections and time has come to correct this for forthcoming elections,” Pawar pointed out. It may be recalled that in 2009, the Congress had won 17 Lok Sabha seats and NCP had won only eight seats. Based on the results, NCP had contested on 114 seats compared to 174 seats by Congress in the Assembly elections. There are 288 Assembly seats in the state. However, in recent general election, Congress has got a meager two seats and NCP managed to win four of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in the state. As a result the NCP has adopted an aggressive stance and is all set to pressurise the Congress further for greater share of seats in the upcoming elections.

inally, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Prithviraj Chavan, yesterday logged on to social media platform Twitter - @CMO Maharashtra. Though exactly not him, as the handle will be operated by his Public Relations team in the Chief Ministers Office (CMO). Since its launch yesterday, the CMO up-

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan loaded about 12 government related messages. By evening, the handle had 25 tweets, 50 followings and 162 followers. Speaking to ADC yesterday, CMO public relations officer Aniruddha Ashtraputre disclosed that the office shall upload content like important government decisions, newspaper cuttings related to the Chief Minister, editorials, important announcements and official programmes of the chief minister for the day. Some of the government decisions that were tweeted on the twitter handle included the state governments letter of guarantee to the centre on transfer of Indu mill land for construction of the grand memorial for Dr B R Ambedkar and a host of cabinet decisions

that were taken today and some government decisions. Ashtraputre disclosed that already the tweets run into more than couple of pages. Some early responses to the CMO's twitter handle ranged from why the delay or better late than never. But what is interesting to note here is that 68 year old Chavan, the 22nd chief minister of Maharashtra since November 11, 2010 is also known as Technocrat Chief Minister. A alumni of the Birla Institute of Technology (BITS), Pilani, Chavan did his mechanical engineering from University of California, Berkley. Prior to taking the plunge into active politics, Chavan worked on aircraft instrumentation and designing audio recorders for anti-submarine warfare in the US. Chavan follows the footsteps of other chief minister's like Omar Abdullah (Jammu & Kashmir), Mamata Banerjee (West Bengal) and former Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi. Other prominent politicians on the social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook include: NCP chief Sharad Pawar, Sashi Tharoor who has 16 lakh followers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi who has 13 lakh twitter followers, Mamata Banerjee has just 4,000 followers on twitter and 1.5 lakh followers on Facebook, Omar Abdullah has 2.49 lakh followers, while former prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh who has 4.80 lakh followers is the 19th most followed politician leaving behind UK prime minister David Cameroon and former Australian prime minister Julia Gillard. The other notable politicians on social media include: L K Advani, Milind Deora, Sushma Swaraj.

ontrary to reports appearing in the media, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) might just be able to retain its status as national recognised party going by the number of MPs and MLAs it has to show to retain that status, feel Election Commission of India (ECI) sources. Sources in the ECI, speaking to ADC on condition of anonymity, disclosed that going by the provisions of section 6A of the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968, the NCP has the requisite number of 6 MPs and 62 MLAs in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, besides having MLAs in 6 state assemblies. Reacting to reports of the ECI notice to the party about its recognition status, state NCP spokesperson, Nawab Malik had argued that the party has elected MPs from 3 states and 6 state assemblies (including Maharashtra). Of the 6 Lok Sabha MPs, 4 are from Maharashtra, while one each is from Bihar and Lakshadweep. Besides the 62 NCP MLAs from Maharashtra, the party has MLAs in Gujarat, UP, Meghalaya, Manipur and Nagaland. Sources in the ECI disclosed that, as per provisions of section

6A of the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968, for a party to retain its nationally recognised party status, it has to have polled six per cent of the total votes polled and should have returned at least 2 MPs from that state. On the issue of an NCP MP being elected from Lakshadweep, which is a Union Territory, ECI sources clarified that, for administrative purposes, Lakshadweep is treated as a Union Territory, while for the ECI it still is a state entity. Sources added that the issue of the NCP returning an MP from Lakshadweep will not be much of a problem. In the Lok Sabha elections held in May earlier this year, the NCP has polled 16.12 per cent votes in Maharashtra, in Bihar where it won 1 seat, it has polled just 1.82 per cent of votes and in Lakshadweep, where it has won the lone seat, it has polled 50.1 per cent. The NCP polled 77.82 lakh total votes (16.12 per cent) and won 4 seats in Maharashtra, while in the 2009 elections, it got 71.31 lakh votes (19.29 per cent) and had won 8 seats. This time around, its tally has shrunk in the Lok Sabha from 9 MPs in 2009 to 6 MPs in 2014.

Ponder awhile... “Clouds come floating into my life, no longer to carry rain or usher storm, but to add color to my sunset sky.” — Rabindranath Tagore

A matter for N grave concern T

HE MET keeps making gloomy, alarming forecasts: Rainfall will not be normal. Usually, weather forecasts turn out to be incorrect. It is the experience of many that when the Weather Bureau announces there will be bright sunshine, it pours with rain. When the MET announced the subnormal rainfall across the country in May, there was serious concern among farmers, traders and millions of consumers as well. If it does not rain in Mumbai, people cannot survive. Mumbai gets its water from lakes and only if they become full, people can get a good supply. The water levels in these lakes have gone alarmingly down and the city will have a water shortage. Time was, before Vaitarna was built, Mumbai used to get water from wells. All of them have been closed down. People in the suburbs can depend on well water - it does not take much time to dig borewells. It has happened before: There was scanty rainfall and people were advised to leave the city. There was an exodus. Wells were the only source of water. If heavy rains do not come in the next few days, the city will face a grave, dry problem. However, it rained very heavily yesterday and there is now once again hope, all will be well. It is a matter of great concern that in the entire month of June, there has been no rain in Maharashtra. According to reports, nearfamine situation has arisen in some parts of the state. The state gets heavy rain in July but the MET has doubts about this. The BMC had no go but to impose 20 per cent water cut. People in the city have some water at least every day. This, however, is not the case in some parts of the state which depend solely on rain and have no other sources of water.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JULY 3, 2014

EXT week Narendra Modi's government will present its first Budget. The prime minister has personally confirmed that he has inherited an economy in the doldrums and government coffers that have almost no money in them. There is no reason to disbelieve him since in the last three years of the Sonia-Manmohan government the economy went back to growth rates more typical of the sixties and seventies in real terms.Since times are so bad should the new government not be thinking of innovative ways to cut spending? Can there be a better time to do this than now when a political party that has ruled India for more than half a century has finally been ousted? So hopefully the new finance minister will not plod along the same road his predecessors did in the past decade because it was a road that led to ruin for India. But, even if he does not come up with a whole new approach there are things that the prime minister can do that could effect drastic cuts in government spending on itself.

ing government hotels like the Samrat and the Akbar. The additional benefit will be that taxpayers' money will not be wasted on free domestic gas, telephone calls, electricity and the maintenance of vast gardens. If the prime minister means business then he must go even further and make serious cuts in spending on useless ministries and useless administrative measures. He has hinted that he wants to abolish the Planning Commission and he is right to want to rid us of this relic from socialist times but while he is about it, he can also close down the Ministry of Infor-

Accommodation to MPs

ON THE SPOT

Let me start with a cause that I have campaigned for since I started writing a political column nearly thirty years ago and this is that, it is time to stop using our money to house our elected representatives in accommodation more suited to corporate billionaires. The prime minster has already said that only ministers will be allowed houses in Lutyens' Delhi and that ordinary MPs will have to settle for lesser accommodation but he needs to go further. A small flat in Lutyens' Delhi fetches a monthly rent of between Rs.2 lakh to Rs.5 lakh so the large apartments that are bequeathed Members of Parliament would be twice that much. Newspapers reported recently that Kapil Sibal, reduced now to be being just a lawyer, is paying Rs.18 lakh a month to rent a house in Jor Bagh. Using this as a measure it costs Indian taxpayers more than Rs.50 lakh a month to accommodate a single minister. Not even the richest democratic countries in the world allow this kind of reckless spending. Why should India continue this very bad practice when making commercial use of Lutyens' Delhi could bring in thousands of crore rupees? So please prime minister, move your ministers into bungalows on the 600-acre estate that surrounds Rashtrapati Bhawan where security costs will reduce hugely and move MPs into nice rooms in defunct, decay-

Tavleen Singh mation & Broadcasting which is as much of a relic. And, he can save money by eliminating a whole range of useless paperwork that does nothing but slow down the process of governance. Let me give you my two favorite examples. Passport application forms can be reduced to one page from 30 and reapplication should be made possible online. Immigration forms for departing and returning Indian citizens should be abolished altogether since computers already provide a full record. I cannot think of another country that makes its own citizens fill in these forms. The prime minister promised 'minimum government, maximum governance' so he needs to recognize that this will not be possible unless he makes drastic administrative changes. Very few democratic countries have the convoluted procedures that India continues to have to do the simplest things. Property registration and land records are departments that are riddled with corrupt practices because the procedures are so needlessly complicated. These are things that can be done without needing to set up a committee to reform administrative systems. Then there are the vast problems created

‘Everybody is vulnerable in thinking’ W

HAT is a prayer? Prayer is sending blessings to all. Prayer is sending your compassion to all. Prayer is creating an antidote of negative thoughts -- it is a positivity. This will be the third insight about thoughts, that they are things, forces, and you have to handle them very carefully. Ordinarily, not aware, you go on thinking anything. It is difficult to find a person who has not committed many murders in thought; difficult to find a person who has not been doing all sorts of sins and crimes inside the mind -and then these things happen. And remember, you may not murder, but your continuous thinking of murdering somebody may create the situation in which the person is murdered. Somebody may take your thought, because there are weaker persons all around and

thoughts flow like water: downwards. If you think something continuously, someone who is a weakling may take our thought and go and kill a person. That's why those who have known the inner reality of man say that whatsoever happens on the earth, everybody is re-

MATTER & SPIRIT sponsible. Everybody. If the earth is a hell, you are a creator, you participate. Don't go on throwing responsibility on others -- you are also responsible, it is a collective phenomenon. The disease may bubble up anywhere, the explosion may happen millions, thousands of miles away from you -- that doesn't make any difference, because thought is a non-spatial phenomenon, it needs no space.

by centralization at various levels all the way down the line. So we recently saw the ViceChancellor of Delhi University try to resist interference in the university's autonomy from the University Grants Commission (UGC), but why does he not provide similar autonomy to colleges affiliated with the university? Why do private colleges find themselves forced to seek affiliation to universities that officials decide they should be affiliated to?

Interference in curriculum In Delhi, recently, I spent a morning with the principal of Modern School and was astounded to discover the degree to which government officials interfere not just in the curriculum, but even in such details as teachers salaries. Schools that do not take funds or land from government should be entitled to do what they want where these things are concerned but they are not. Officials interfere so totally that under the education policy made by the last government they even have the right to tell private schools which students they can admit and which ones they cannot. The point, I am making, is that while government interferes in a whole range of things that officials should have nothing to do with when it comes to real governance nothing seems to change. Officials are so busy poking their noses into what is not their business that they have little time left to do their real job. Their real job is to find ways to make life easier for the citizens of this country and it is on this front that they almost never deliver. As someone whose job entails meeting people who come from the richest sections of Indian society and those who come from the poorest most deprived sections I can report that the complaints about harassment by officials are nearly the same if at different levels. So if the prime minister wants to deliver on his promise of minimum governance, he is going to first have to make procedures less complicated so that there are less loopholes for officials to use for purposes of interference. Of course, the Budget is important because it will indicate whether the new government is seriously thinking in a new way. But, as important is what the prime minister can do outside the purview of the Budget to bring us the minimum governance we so desperately need. This will need the sort of drastic changes that no Congress government ever had the courage to make. That's why it travels fastest. Even light cannot travel so fast, because even for light space is needed. Thought travels fastest. In fact it takes no time in traveling, space doesn't exist for it. You may be here, thinking of something, and it happens in America. How can you be held responsible? No court can punish you, but in the ultimate court of existence you will be punished -- you are already punished. That's why you are so miserable. People come to me and they say: "We never do anything wrong to anybody, and still we are so miserable." You may not be doing, you may be thinking -- and thinking is more subtle than doing. A person can protect himself from doing, but he cannot protect himself from thinking. For thinking, everybody is vulnerable. No-thinking is a must if you want to be completely freed from sin, freed from crime, freed from all that goes around you -- and that is the meaning of a Buddha. — Osho

THE Prime Minister has hit the nail on the head by his speech in English at the successful PSLV launch. By speaking in English on a platform and event that has an international impact he has communicated what he wants far more effectively and to a much larger audience than if he had spoken in Hindi. And the speech was extempore and he did not need notes written in some language in some other script and any day better than any speech by the false competitor cum pretender PM in the elections. FIRST NDA's big budget for 2014 is coming shortly and people are eagerly waiting for its nature and status. But though NDA government has been formed with thumping majority and good takeover from UPA II government, one should not forget that national economy that has been bequeathed upon NDA by UPA was in a very bad shape, shattered and bankrupt. So it would be a Herculean task for NDA to revive it and bring economic renaissance to the nation. Adding to its woes, monsoon is predicted to be much less this year and we as a nation heavily depend upon it a lot. But it is very important that NDA should not forget that there are two phases of economy – income receipt and expenditure. To a very great extent all governments emphasise only on receipts and not on expenditure

It would be imprudent to brand referees as biased.

Football’s a funny game!

Ambulance at Vashi station

REFEREES are facing flak in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Teams, coaches and critics are debating their decisions. FIFA needs to break away from traditions and go for the review system that would save umpires from being derided. The referee doesn’t have the benefit of slow motion replays, he only has a split second to judge and make a call. Recently Portuguese referee was in trouble for awarding a dying minute penalty to Holland. It would be imprudent to brand referees as biased. Let there be at least two reviews in the game and save the referees from ridicule. Time for FIFA to move with the times.

IT is indeed heartening to note that Vashi railway station is the first in the city to get ambulance services. State Government had acceded to a demand of commuters in Navi Mumbai by providing an ambulance service at Vashi rail station. The need of the hour is the Mobile Emergency Medical Services in the accident prone roads in Navi Mumbai. LETTERS PM floors language fundamentalists

THE reaction of the champions of individual freedom to the recent controversy over the pub/bikini culture is indeed very strange. Do they wish that there should be no restrictions on where one goes or what one wears? Do they want that these very instruments of promiscuity, the root cause of the spread of the dreaded AIDS/HIV scourge, should be encouraged? To counter the puritans, do they intend to start ‘pub bharo’ movement, or undertake popularising the use of bikini, just on the lines of the pink ‘chaddi andolan’ in the recent past? — Arun Malankar, Santacruz

Toll naka collections THE abolition of all 44 toll nakas in Maharashtra, by the present state government will make an expense free ride on our highways to all vehicle owners. Ostensibly to recover the cost of building the highways, our government authorities continued to collect the toll fees even after 3o years of construction of the state roadways. Thanks to the agitation called by Raj Thackeray, supremo of MNS, it is now a toll free ride for motorists. Full marks to Raj Thackeray.

Forty of the 44 ministers in the new government at the Centre are millionaires with the wealthiest being Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley. That’s fine! But the annoying aspect is that about 30% of the ministers have criminal background and criminal cases pending against them. There is a recent Supreme Court ruling on legislators with criminal backgrounds. I hope our dear beloved Prime Minister Narendra Modiji will have a look at this too. — Jubel D’Cruz, Dombivli

IT is a stark fact that it is unfair to expect the new government to make a turnaround in a year's time, leave alone a month. The moot point here is that it is also too unfair to inflict high price rise on people in a month's time. Everybody knows that people were already weighed down by unprecedented inflation under the Congress regime which was notorious for huge scams, brazen attitude arrogantly defending the indefensible. Modi&Co., should have waited and taken some time over the price rise and given some cool period say three months after taking over before imaginatively phasing out the price rise, may be, on a quarterly basis so that the burden of the rise is not so acutely felt by the public all at one time. — T.M. Uday Shankar, Mumbai

PSLV LAUNCH AND ECONOMICS WHILE appreciating wholeheartedly the highly skillful efforts of ISRO in launching PSLV the overawed general public would like to know whether it is essential for the Nation to continuously get engaged in periodically launching these 'vehicles' into the sky and the productive returns thereto benefiting them/Nation. This question arises after the government's view of the economic mess and it’s view that the 'Bitter Pill' is required to be administered to stem the rot that had set in. This matter is to be carefully audited keeping in view the economic status and the visibly recurring huge expenditure the burden of which has a direct bearing on the honest tax-payers. The time has come to clarify the public that the money spent is productive, progressive and solely in the interest of the public/Nation. — T.M. Uday Shankar, Mumbai

RAIL BUGET 2014-15 and light weight wagon for transporting salt are also likely to find mention in NDA government's first Rail Budget on July 8. Heeding to the demand from the manufacturing sector, the Railways is also finalising its budgetary plan to develop high capacity wagons to transport more steel coils. As per the plan, the state-run transporter is proposing to develop wagons which can carry upto 3944 tons of coils. Currently, the carrying capacity of wagons is 2346 tons. Aiming at generating more revenue from parcel movement, the Rail Budget is likely to propose development of high capacity parcel vans. According to sources, better passenger amenities and strengthening of safety and security in trains are likely to be focus of Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda in his maiden Rail Budget. In a step towards providing better amenities and hygienic condition in trains, railways have decided to start a pilot project of providing disposable bedrolls in Bangalore Rajdhani Express. There have been complaints regarding the quality of linen provided to Rajdhani passengers.

Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda. "So, it has been decided to provide linen made of non-woven polyester fabric which can be disposed off after use. It will be carried out in an experimental way in Bangalore Rajdhani and after getting feedback from passengers a decision will be taken to adopt in in other Rajdhani trains," the sources said. Railways will also start a pilot project to equip Shatabdi coaches with automatic closing door system as a fool-proof safety device. The automatic door system will also be installed in EMU trains for suburban service, as per the plan. Keeping the increased demand for dairy products and milk output, railways is proposing to develop higher capacity milk van which can carry 44,600 litres as against the current 40,000 litre. Though the carrying capacity of milk van will be increased, the weight of the new design milk van will be reduced from 37 tons to 29.7 tons, as per the plan. PTI

Housing for all by 2022 a top priority: Naidu

NEW DELHI: Providing housing for all by 2022 is a top priority of the government which is exploring all financial models to go ahead with the ambitious scheme, Urban Development and Housing Minister Venkaiah Naidu on Wednesday said. The prime minister is keen that states and Union Territories are proactive partners in this challenging task, he said.

EW DELHI: The government on Wednesday hiked the minimum export price of onion to US $500 per tonne to improve the domestic supply and curb prices. Last month, the minimum export price (MEP) on onion was re-introduced at $300 per tonne barely three months after the previous government in March had abolished it. MEP is the rate below which no exports are allowed. Retail prices of onion have risen to about Rs 25-30 per kg, while the wholesale prices are ruling at Rs 18.50 per kg in the national capital. The decision to increase the onion MEP was taken on June 30 by an Inter-Ministerial Committee. "Keeping in view, the rising retail and wholesale prices and delayed monsoon, the Committee unanimously decided to fix the MEP at $500 per tonne which translates to Rs.30 per kg with a view to arrest domestic price rise and augment domestic supply," an official told PTI.

The committee observed that "the wholesale and retail prices of onion are going up in producing and consuming mandies and despite MEP at $300 per tonne, there is no appreciable decline in the exports of onion." Onion prices have been rising due to speculation amid anticipation of below normal monsoon despite sufficient supply in the country. The wholesale price of onion at Lasalgoan in Maharashtra -Asia's largest onion market -- has risen by about 80 per cent during June to Rs 18.50 per kg. Onion production is estimated to have risen to 192 lakh tonnes during 2013-14 crop year (JulyJune), from 168 lakh tonne in 2012-13. Exports meanwhile fell to 13.58 lakh tonnes last fiscal from 18.22 lakh tonnes in 201213. The domestic demand during the lean period from June to November is met through stored rabi (winter) and fresh kharif (summer) produce.

Last week, we told you about television and book characters that we wish were real. This week, we’re turning to cartoons and films for our role models. Rhea Dhanbhoora & Dev Goswami bring you a list of the most memorable female characters from the world of films and animation

F

rom Maya in Zero Dark Thirty, to Wilma from The Flintstones, there are some characters who just refuse to fade from your memory. But, have you ever wondered why? What we love about most of these female characters is that they share common traits of independence, wit and determination. Last week, we gave you a round-up of strong female characters from books and novels. In this final part of our series, we take a look at female characters from Hollywood and from cartoons.

>> Molly Ringwald was Andie Walsh

>> Julia Roberts who played Katherine Watson

>> Kat Startford was played by Julia Stiles

On the silver screen Male or female, films have always given us unforgettable characters. In this list, we tell you about our favourite female characters, who have held our attention with their witty dialogues and brilliant personalities.

Kat startford, 10 Things I Hate About You Witty, smart and outspoken, Kat Startford, played by Julia Stiles, is a character who just has to be on this list. She has a sharp tongue that will spare no one and her ambition knows no boundaries. Sample this for a quote — “Romantic? Hemingway? He was an abusive, alcoholic misogynist who squandered half of his life hanging around Picasso, trying to nail his leftovers.”

tracy, Hairspray A slightly overweight teenager who becomes a dancer and fights against racial segregation — there’s no questioning why character is on our list. The plot of the film might not >> Jessica Chastain, be a particularly new one, but the grit showed by Tracy who played Maya Turnbald, the lead character, makes this film memorable. Why Tracy finds a place on this list is best explained in her own words: “I think I’ve kind of been in a bubble... thinking that fairness was gonna just happen. It’s not. People like me are gonna have to get up off their fathers’ laps and go out and fight for it.” We think that the sentiment holds true even today!

>> Uma Thurman was The Bride

Andie Walsh, Pretty in Pink

>> Emma Stone played Skeeter

>> Nikki Blonsky essayed Tracy

Essayed by Molly Ringwald, Andie Wash’s fight is against social conventions of America in the ’80s. The story is that of a working-class girl who lives in the ‘wrong part of town’ and has a crush on one of the rich boys in school. Throughout the film, we see Andie defy social restrictions, as she goes after what she wants. Continued on pg 14 «

little lotta

Continued from pg 13 «

In a world where slim is in, Little Lotta from the Harvey Comics should be a character all young girls are exposed to. She defies the thin is beautiful stereotype, helping children understand all shapes and sizes from an early age.

Katherine Watson, Mona Lisa Smile Julia Roberts has played several great roles in her career, but it was her portrayal of art teacher Katherine Watson, that bagged her a spot on this list. Her’s is a story of trying to make a difference in her students’ lives. While doing so, she has to fight with the college’s administration, which wants her to stick to tried and tested methods. Her refusal to give up on her beliefs or make compromises while she works to change the lives of her students for the better, makes for an inspiring watch.

Wilma Forget modern cartoons, The Flintstones is where it all began. Wilma was the epitome of an intelligent, assertive woman, who did not take any nonsense from anyone, especially her better half.

The Bride, Kill Bill

Powerpuff girls

Beatrix Kiddo, popularly known as The Bride, is a character that has often been named in lists of all-time favourites. Played by Uma Thurman, The Bride is a ruthless, brave warrior, who was once an assassin. Quentin Tarantino’s tale of vengeance, which is spread over two parts, has given us one of the strongest female characters to date, who has left a deep, cultural impact. And for that alone, The Bride finds a place on this list.

The three kindergarten characters combined tomboy attributes (Buttercup), childish innocence (Bubbles) and femininity (Blossom), added in a dash of respecting your elders, taught us to stick to a curfew (with the three girls getting back from fighting crime by 9pm!) and showed us that no matter how young or old we are, what our gender was, we could all fight evil and do a little good.

Maya, Zero Dark Thirty When it comes to cinema, headstrong and ruthless CIA operatives are dime a dozen. But, you will rarely come across women in such roles and characters such as Maya are rarer still. Determined to find Osama Bin Laden, Maya will have you rooting for her from the very second she makes her appearance on screen, even when some of her actions are morally questionable. Her character is fun to watch and some of her dialogues from the film are truly (we’re sorry for using this oft used adjective when it comes to films), epic. Sample this: [To the Navy Seals] “Quite frankly, I didn’t even want to use you guys, with your dip and velcro and all your gear bulls**t. I wanted to drop a bomb. But people didn’t believe in this lead enough to drop a bomb. So, they’re using you guys as canaries. And, in theory, if Bin Laden isn’t there, you can sneak away and no one will be the wiser. But Bin Laden is there. And you’re going to kill him for me.” See what we mean?

Alex, Up in the Air The reason we like Alex Goran, played by Vera Farmiga, from the movie Up In the Air, is because she displays a unique kind of independence. Considering how films usually go, you’d expect that in the end, Alex will give up everything to be with the film’s lead actor. But, she is practical, knows what she wants and isn’t willing to compromise on her boundaries or limits.

>> Sandra Bullock (left) and Melissa McCarthy (right) from The Heat

Ashburn and Mullins, The Heat Two cops, both completely incompatible with each other, working together on a case to bring down a major criminal. Nothing new, right? Except in The Heat, these two cops are women. Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) and Mullins (Melissa McCarthy) follow a very predictable story line. At first they clash because of their personalities. But then, something happens (alcohol in this case), which leads the pair to bond and they then go on to crack the case, earning laurels all around. The story might not sound great, but we challenge you to come up with too many other films with women as the lead pair.

lisa Simpson

Vera Drake is a touching, emotional story of a workingclass woman, named Vera Drake. The character, played by Imelda Staunton, performs illegal abortions — not for money, but because she believes that she is doing a good thing by helping women in trouble. Her actions get her arrested, but instead of poignant, tear-jerking speeches in the court-room, she is sent to jail. The grit showed by Vera and the brilliant performance by Imelda Saunton, make this character truly unforgettable.

Long before women were superheroes, Hanna-Barbera brought the leopard print wearing, musically talented, Josie and the Pussycats, to chase after villains and prove that the three girls could do absolutely anything that men could!

Penelope Pitstop How, you ask, could a blonde cartoon powdering her face while driving a pink car, be a strong character whom we look up to? While on the surface Penelope is a silly blonde who falls for all sorts of tricks, it’s important to realise that she was the only solo female race-car driver in the Wacky Races, at a time when it wasn’t a common reality in the real world. She also got out of scraps by using her wits, since the Anthill Mob who got there to save her were — to put it mildly — extremely inefficient.

AnAlySing The AniMATeD People don’t usually analyse cartoons, but the characters in a lot of our favourite Cartoon Network and Disney shows, as well as some popular comic books, are actually incredibly fierce women and can be great role models for little girls the world over. Take a look at some of our favourite cartoon characters, who reversed gender stereotypes back in the day.

Vera Drake, Vera Drake

Josie and the Pussycats

Who said that children had to talk about doll houses and princesses? Lisa Simpson took the stereotype of an 8-year-old girl and crushed it beyond recognition — in a really good way. She supports the little people, wants all the right things, is definitely a feminist and is confident and wise way beyond her years. She’s one little girl who knows how smart she is, but never lets that come in the way of learning even more — making her a great example for children.

Velma Dinkley So, Velma from Scooby Doo is not an outright feminist, but her brains, brawn and appearance make her a great role model. While the character of Daphne may have been controversial, because of her ditziness and the generalised opinion that pretty girls couldn’t be smart, Velma more than made up for it with her skill, adeptness and competitive nature — a portrayal that was not the norm when the cartoon was created.

Skeeter, The Help

lucy van Pelt

An idealistic character sketch, but a realistic portrayal. This is why Skeetar Phelan, essayed by Emma Stone, finds a place on this list. She is a journalist and a white woman in the Civil Rights era in America and she decides to write a book exploring racism faced by black maids at the hands of the white families of that era. While doing so, she has to deal with her own family’s disapproval and anxiety about what will happen once the stories of these black maids are exposed. Skeeter ends up being able to change the lives of a few of the maids that she comes across while researching the book.

If you like Peanuts and the Charlie Brown strip, you’ll see why we have to be grateful to creator Charles Schlutz. While the character has been under fire for being a crabby, arrogant bully, we think that the football-loving, dominating girl just turned the tables on what was expected of little boys and girls at the time. Feminist or not, she exudes a sense of strength that we love.

Wonder Woman DC Comics fans, we know you’re smiling. The only woman in a trio of superheroes and a definite force to be reckoned with, she combines femininity with brawn to prove that the two can exist side-by-side.

Kim Possible This teenage superhero is definitely one we’d recommend to all children. She’s a crime-fighting, unstoppable hero and balances being popular, attractive and super-smart at the same time. She’s the entire package — so, why wouldn’t we look up to her?

a shiny mess Don’t get us wrong, because we love cigarette pants. They are extremely versatile and you can wear a pair of cotton ones on a casual day out, team a pair with a blazer for a work-appropriate look and even pair them with sky-high heels if you’re headed to a party. They transition well from day to night attire and are extremely flattering if you get the right ones for your body type. While you can experiment with fabrics such as corduroy or tweed and even opt for prints such as houndstooth and minute polka dots, stay far away from velvet. The fabric isn’t our favourite to start with, but paired with cigarette pants, the combination is fashion suicide! The fabric catches light in all the wrong places, adds bulk to a svelte look and is unflattering, whichever way you look at it!

Back to the ’80s Unless the look you are going for is retro, stay away from palazzo pants with big prints, especially polka dots and flowers. While small prints lend well to the structure and fit of these pants, big polka dots, or florals, look rather unsightly. The ’80s were a great time for art and music, but this is not the best era to take your fashion inspiration from. Big prints equal more bulk and palazzos with massive prints sprawled all over can make your hips and thighs appear to be much larger than they already are. To put things into perspective, imagine an optical illusion dress, but one that’s working in reverse. So, unless you’re headed to an ’80s theme party, stick to solid coloured palazzos and small prints.

oh, so awkward! Draped dresses are a dream — no matter what your body type is. Find the right draped dress and you can rest assured that it will accentuate your best features and elegantly cover up all your problem areas. But, add silk to the mix and you have on your hands, what can only be described as, a disaster. While fabrics such as chiffon, georgette and crepe lend themselves beautifully to the art of draping, a fabric such as silk — as nice as it looks — doesn’t drape well. Instead of pleating effortlessly and cascading off your body, draped dresses made in silk bend awkwardly and crease in the blink of an eye, despite the gorgeous look and feel.

The outfit on its own would not have made us judge Bhagyashree so harshly. But, the embellished bag is just too much to accompany an already heavily embellished outfit — especially since she isn’t attending a wedding. The hair does not add anything remotely stylish to her look either.

We had to look twice here, but we’re almost sure we don’t like this look. The sheer top is too blingy for such a bright skirt and her shoes just do not go with her overall look. Her hair looks frazzled and unkempt — not a good look for you Shradha.

Some fashion items just don’t go together, while some trends — while they work well on the catwalk, look terrible on the streets. Shirley Mistry tells you which ones you should be avoiding like the plague hile nautical stripes on a dress and pin stripes on leggings sound scary, they are trends that you can still pull off with élan; other trends however, just don’t work, no matter how hard you try. There is a fine line between being funky or kitschy and being downright garish, so, read on to find out what trends spell ‘ghastly,’ when it comes to your wardrobe.

BhaGyashree

like a colour-wheel We personally love colour-blocking as a trend. It is chic, takes minimal effort and means that you can create numerous combinations from existing pieces in your wardrobe, without breaking the bank or shopping for too many new pieces. It gives you the freedom to work with what you have, but it is the easiest trend to mess up as well. It is important to remember, that there is a big difference between a pop of colour and shoes that stick out like a sore thumb. Also, there is such a thing as too much colour-blocking. While a colour-blocked dress may look chic, pairing it with colour-blocked heels and a colour-blocked clutch will make you look like a walking, talking colour wheel! So, save the colour blocking for just one aspect of your outfit.

A good pantsuit can makes you look more professional, powerful, driven and in control almost instantly. However, pick a matching trousers and shirt combo and you run the risk of looking like you’ve stepped out of your house, dressed in your best pyjama suit. Jokes aside, if you are looking to match your trousers with your shirt, make sure that the cut of both pieces is well tailored to your physique. Loose pants or shirts (especially ones with a collar) can make you look like you just stepped out of bed. Also, avoid fabrics such as satin and silk (for obvious reasons), as well as anything that isn’t well-tailored. Don’t forget to add a blazer to your look, to ensure that your ensemble isn’t mistaken for something that it isn’t.

If you are a ’90s child, dungarees making a come-back, has to have been an exciting moment for you. They last for ages, because they are made from denim, up your shorts game and are convenient. Slip one on with your favourite T-shirt and sneakers and you are good to go! When crop tops came back into fashion, the two paired well to give the old trend a fresh spin. However, some fashion-forward people took the trend one step further and paired dungarees with bandeau tops! While there is nothing wrong with a bandeau top, wearing it with a pair of dungarees just looks like you’ve forgotten to wear a top underneath. While a strip of midriff revealed by a crop top is one thing, a bandeau top becomes too risqué and ruins the charm of the good old dungarees. Stick to cute tops, regular or cropped ones, but, steer clear of bandeau tops the next time you wear a pair of dungarees.

This was almost a miss, but after a while this look begins to grow on you. Karisma could’ve avoided the blue vest, but it doesn’t look so bad. We’re glad that her accessories and hairstyle are minimal so as not to overcrowd her look.

We love Mandira’s look this week. Her dress is gorgeous and the chunky necklace adds an oomph factor. We’re not big fans of the shoes, but the laid-back makeup and gorgeous cropped hair more than make up for it!

Urvashi’s dress is very pretty, her heels are the perfect size and the side-swept hair looks pretty too. Her makeup is a little too severe and we don’t like the earrings, but overall, this is a good look on her.

The best thing about palm rings is that they can be worn with both casual as well as ethnic attire. You can wear a plain silver or gold ring with western outfits, or wear something with a little more detail, such as a dual-chain ring, with an ethnic outfit. >> Opting for a draped dress in a stiff fabric will make it look awkward like this dress sported by Sex and the City star Kim Cattrall, and every crinkle will show up as a crease!

The beauty of a palm ring is that you never have to wear other accessories with it. The palm ring itself is enough to compliment your entire look. Palm rings have not been termed the accessory of the year for nothing!

Most blueberry creams smell a little suspect after the first few weeks of using them, especially if they’re stored for too long. With Concept II though, every time you open the bottle, you’re hit by a waft of incredibly sweet blueberry that might be too strong for some. It smells like blueberry cheesecake (possibly because of the added vanilla) and moisturises your skin effectively. The Miami-based brand, that was recently introduced in Mumbai by New Beauty Center, delivers on its claims, and the only grouse I had with it was that it was a little too greasy for my oily skin. It takes a while to get absorbed, leaving a little film of cream on your skin for a few minutes. One, that you talk too loudly and two, that they’re hinting that you need to shut up! Regardless of whether it’s personal or work-related, take all phone calls in an area where you won’t end up disturbing your colleagues.

If someone pays you a simple compliment about your clothes or accessories and you turn it into a long drawnout conversation about shopping, sales and your personal preferences, you shouldn’t be surprised if people stop approaching you. o one likes people who talk too much or too loudly (or both), as they are an irritant at work and a constant distraction, especially when you’re trying to get something done over their loud conversations. If you’re an annoying colleague, unless you have truly honest friends in at work, you won’t realise that you are disturbing anyone. Your co-workers might be cursing you under their breath, but they won’t come out and say it to your face. If you find yourself in any of these situations on a daily basis, it should be a sign that you need to stop being such a blabber mouth.

Do you often get the feeling that your co-workers have zoned out of the conversation, halfway through what you were saying? We’re sorry to have to break it to you, but they probably have! Regardless of whether they are busy or not, your colleagues won’t appreciate your incessant chatter. A short conversation is fine once in a while, but you don’t have to greet them and start talking about the first thing that you think of, every time you pass their desk. And you certainly should not talk about things that

you happen to notice on their computer screens. Not only is it annoying, it is also rude and extremely creepy.

floreT misTico collecTion by Trendy diva

I recently quit my job and I am currently completing my notice period. I have not taken a vacation for the four years that I have been with this company. So, I plan to take a break for around six months to pursue my dream of travelling abroad. However, people have advised me not do so, since a gap in my resume could hamper future job prospects. But, if I don’t travel now, I am afraid that I won’t have the opportunity to do so later. What should I do? Please help! — sumitra sen, parel (e)

During the monsoon, you need a trendy pair of shorts, a dress that will dry in a jiffy and several skirts. To help you fill your closet with clothes that are perfect for the monsoon, Trendy Diva has launched a new collection, called Floret Mistico. It comprises of chic outfits that are easy-to-wear and suit any occasion. The floral shorts from the range are perfect for a casual day out with friends, while the fashionable, pink floral dress is a crowd pleaser, apt for a night out.

dear sumitra, Taking time off for personal reasons, used to be a bad thing. But, now it all depends on your confidence and ability to convince the interviewer about your choices, more than the gap on your resume. If you are a little shaky about your decision, this gap will definitely affect your career, because the person taking your interview will respond in accordance to how you behave. However, try to make this gap as brief as possible. A year or six months is not usually

recommended as you will be off the job market for a long time, but a break of about two or three months is fine. Also, make sure that you have enough savings for a trip abroad as you don’t want to end up broke after the trip. Once, your break is over, make sure that you don’t waste any time and start applying for jobs immediately. send your questions to womansworld@afternoondc.in before wednesday

Dev Goswami tells you how massages can help with prenatal care and gives you a few techniques and tips to keep in mind

baby

Y

>> Products such as scented wipes can put your baby at risk of rashes

While the edge of a table and an exposed plug point are obvious dangers to your baby, scented wipes and plastic bottles can be harmful too! Shirley Mistry tells you about some of the most harmful substances, found in common baby products aby products such as wipes, bottles and creams that you use on a daily basis, often more than once a day, actually contain ingredients that can be harmful for your baby. There is a simple reason for this — babies have such low body mass, that even small amounts of toxins will have a major impact on their health. Take a look at some of the worst offenders.

B

it was found that adults with greater levels of BPA in their urine were at a higher risk of suffering from diabetes, heart disease and liver disease. Although traces of the chemical may not always affect adults adversely, babies, given their tiny size, are at a greater risk of suffering from disorders that are caused by the chemical, especially if BPAs enter their body consistently, even in small quantities.

Parfum

Packaged food

A fancy way to describe a fragrance-parfumeur, or perfume, parfum is a mixture of several chemicals. The sweet smell of baby wipes that you love, is actually a concoction of harmful chemicals that are used to mask the scent of the other ingredients present in the product. Experts suggest that these fragrances can lead to allergies, rashes, skin diseases and even respiratory disorders. So, switch to scent-free wipes and lotions and do your baby’s health a world of good.

While it might be tempting to stock up on packaged baby food to help you out on days when you just don’t have the time to make your own, it is a very bad idea! Plastic bottles emit harmful chemicals such as phthalates into your food, not to mention the high quantities of refined sugar, artifical colours, preservatives and additional flavourings that are present in packaged food. Fortunately, babies aren’t connoisseurs and even a simple carrot purée will keep them happy! You can even freeze vegetable and fruit purée in small batches, ready to defrost and serve when you are in a pinch. If you must resort to packaged foods, pick brands that are organic and packaged in glass bottles.

Benzoic acid Found in creams and lotions, benzoic acid isn’t safe for babies, even though the safety standards in several countries declare it to be safe for humans. While it may be a staple ingredient in your trusty diaper rash cream, benzoid acid can cause respiratory diseases, aggravate rashes and can even cause a reduction in organ weight. In fact, when it’s combined with vitamin C, benzoic acid becomes carcinogenic, since the combination results in the creation of benzene. The easiest way to protect your baby from the effects of this substance, is to carefully read the labels on all your products and choose organic variants instead.

BisPhenol-a (BPa) BPA is a toxin that is found in plastics, which is what products such as your toddler’s sippy cup, plates, raincoats and lunch boxes are made of. This chemical gives plastic its malleability. In a recent study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association,

BaBy oils To make sure that they remain affordable, most baby oils are made with hydrogenated cottonseed oil, which is the cheapest and most harmful type available. Apart from containing chemicals and fragrances, hydrogenated cottonseed oil is harmful because it is usually contaminated by elements such as mercury, arsenic, lead and pesticides. In fact, it isn’t considered safe to eat — so, why would you use something on your baby’s skin, when you can’t include it in your diet? Use organic olive oil or almond oil on your baby instead, to minimise the absorption of harmful chemicals.

ou might think of massages as a luxurious indulgence, but when it comes to pregnancy, they can be quite beneficial. Vijeyta Vazkar, director of operations at Sukho Thai, explains, “Pregnancy massages reduce stress, decrease swelling in your arms and legs and relieve aches and pains in your muscles and joints. Not only are massages physically beneficial, human touch also provides emotional comfort when you’re pregnant.” Massages such as the Thai Traditional Massage and the Foot Massage with Herb Burn and Hot Stones (both available at Sukho Thai), will help relax your feet and soothe aching muscles. Vijeyta adds that a massage can also help with the following: l Relieve stress l Promote restful sleep l Increase blood circulation l Boost immune system l Increase alertness While you can always visit a spa for a professional massage, the following tips are essential for a home massage. Read on to find out how your partner can help you relax and deal with pregnancy-related discomfort, with these easy, DIY massaging tips. 1. The PosTure The correct posture is extremely important when it comes to pregnancy massages. The best position is to lie on your side with one pillow placed in front of you and another behind you. Adjust these two pillows to ensure that your back and your tummy are getting the best possible support. Prop another pillow under your head and let your bottom leg lie straight on the floor. Bend your top leg at the knee and support it with two pillows. 2. for your Back Your back bears the strain of your belly and so, it is important to make sure that it is relaxed. Ask your partner to gently knead your spine and the surrounding areas (including your bottom) with closed fists. The pressure should be applied with your partner’s knuckles instead of the wrists or arms. >> Don’t try to massage your abdomen at home, as it could be dangerous

3. for your legs Massaging your legs, especially your feet, will help improve blood circulation and also soothe your tired muscles. However, make sure that you avoid massaging your inner thighs as too much pressure might lead to the formation of blood clots. Ask your partner to concentrate on your calves and feet and massage your muscles with a loose fist, in a circular motion. The ideal movement should be from your feet, towards your heart. 4. for your shoulders This is a simple technique, where your partner sits on a hardbacked chair and you sit on the floor, with your back resting against his knees. Ask him to gently press and release the muscles of your neck and shoulders. Even simply stroking your hair will help you feel relaxed. 5. PrecauTions Before you try any of these techniques — at home or at a spa, always check with your gynecologist. He/ she can give you important tips that you should be aware of. During a massage, if you feel any discomfort or pain, stop immediately. Finally, avoid getting your abdomen massaged by your partner. If you absolutely must, ask your doctor to help you by giving you a list of precautions to keep in mind, before you go ahead with it.

Nifty At New High

NSE India: CNX Nifty — Daily Market Report for: Thursday (July 3, 2014) (Based on the activity of the previous trading day) by Dominic Rebello

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS DAY: The Nifty rose substantially on Wednesday (July 02, 2014) a net 90.45 points (1.18%) and closed at the 7725 point level. The market opened up with a gap at the 7683 points level. It then declined by a few points and registered the day’s low at the 7677 points level at 9.47 a.m. The index then rose steadily throughout the session and registered the day’s high at the 7732 points level at 3.03 p.m. and then turned into a range bound movement until closing at the day. Sentiment was extremely bullish and amongst the 50 Nifty stocks 44 were gainers, while just 6 stocks closed in the red. All the sectoral indices closed in the green. Substantial buying was witnessed in infrastructure, metal, power and healthcare stocks.

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Volume: Volume (Qty shares) increased 11.99%. This change is substantial and indicates a wide participation by investors.

Market Breadth: Overall Market Breadth on the NSE was positive. Amongst all the traded stocks, 994 were gainers, 576 were losers and 44 remained unchanged. Slow Stocha stic Indicator: The Slow Stochastic Oscillator has risen and has entered the over-bought zone. The Slow K line in the Stochastic Oscillator is above the slow D line (positive if it continues). RSI Indicator: The RSI is above the 60 level and is now rising (positive if it continues).

MACD Indica tor: The MACD is below zero but is rising (positive if it continues). It is below its 9-day Average (negative).

Resistance Levels The immediate main resistance is at the 7769 points level. The next resistance is at the 7896 points level.

Pivot Point Analysis: For intra-day traders the support and resistance levels are calculated according to the pivot point theory and are: Pivot point = 7712 (This is the level where the trend is likely to change during intra-day). Support (1) = 7691. Support (2) = 7657. Resistance (1) = 7746. Resistance (2) = 7767. OUTLOOK FOR TODAY: On Japanese candlestick patterns the index af ter having formed a doji pattern (indicating indecisiveness amongst i nvestors) has formed a white body candle on substantially higher volumes. In fact, yesterday's candle is almost like a white body Marubozu candle. (A White Marubozu forms when the open equals the low and the close equals the high). This is positive and indicates that the bias has shifted to wards the buy side of the market. Further, the 5 days moving average has crossed above the 15 days moving average. This is positive and a buy signal. The index is now above its 5, 15, 25 and 200 days moving averages and all the four averages are rising and positively trended. Moreover, the velocity parameters too indicate strength. All these indicate a positive bias and the possibility of a fur ther upmove unfolding. Investors are advised to hold long positions.

Consumer Outlook Index Indicates Optimism By Dominic Rebello

Z

BUSINESS

yFin Research yesterday announced the Consumer Outlook Index (COI) for June 2014. The index, which is a barometer of consumer confidence, reflects current and future spending plans, employment and inflation outlook of urban Indian consumers. It has registered a score of 44.3 for June 2014, as compared to 42.0 for the previous month. A score above 50 reflects optimism while below 50 is an indication of pessimism. This index, now at its highest level since May 2012, is, therefore, just over 5 points from optimism. Commenting on the ZyFin Consumer Outlook Index numbers for the month of June, Debopam Chaudhuri, Chief Economist, ZyFin Research, said, “Investor and consumer sentiment is currently at a high, on the consensus that economic conditions will not worsen. Supporting this notion is the steady growth in consumer sentiment data since the swearing-in of an ostensibly strong government. With nearly 60% of the Indian GDP being driven by private spending, a boost in willingness to spend would keep the wheels of the economy in motion until bigger fiscal policy plays start contributing to growth.”

Key Highlights of the ZyFin Consumer Outlook Index for June 2014 are: The COI improved for the second consecutive month to 44.3 in June 2014, marking an increase of 2.3 points over May 2014. The improving willingness to spend accounts majorly for the positive gains registered by the overall index. Among the key components, the Inflation Sentiment Index, the largest inflationary expectations survey in the world, moved up to 28.2 in June 2014 from 25.6 in May 2014. ZyFin’s Food Price Index, however, fell marginally for the second consecutive month. The Spending Sentiment Index, which measures willingness to spend, increased to 30.4 in June 2014 from 28.5 in the previous month. The improvement extends to all three product categories tracked: real estate, vehicles and consumer durables. The Employment Sentiment Index, a tracker of employment situation as perceived by consumers, improved for the fourth consecutive month, to 53.9 in June 2014, up 2.2 points from May 2014. This is backed by better sentiment on job security and employment prospects, on the hope that the new government will implement reforms that create more jobs in the economy.

tive trend in the next six to eight months as the new government improves the business climate, tackles power outages and invests in the infrastructure capabilities, says a DBS Bank in a report. At the same time, the inflation trajectory faces renewed headwinds. Delayed rains last month have raised concerns over higher vegetable price inflation, along with the recent run-up in international fuel prices on geopolitical drivers. In sum, persistence of these headwinds will have an impact on the inflation trajectory for rest of the year. In the near-term, the extent of base-effects driven slump in the June CPI inflation will be shallower than expected vs May’s 8.3%. Further out, inflation risks might be partly offset by dampening forces such as a) hurt to rural demand from weak rains, b) lower increase in agri minimum support prices, c) tight monetary policy and d) recent export curbs on commodities/ crackdown on hoarding practices. On balance, we expect the headline CPI inflation to average 8.1% in FY15.

MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JULY 3, 2014

“I

don't think there is any difference left between the two mediums now. Some 10 years ago, people used to call it small screen but they used to come and promote their films on TV. I am sure they have realised its potential. Elections were fought on television, almost. It is a huge medium now,” Kher told PTI. The actor hosted a show called 'Say Na Something to Anupam Uncle', starred in TV film 'Janam' besides producing many shows for the small screen through his production house. His most recent outing was in Anil Kapoor's '24'. Kher has donned the hat of a host in his latest turn on TV. Stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Mahesh and Alia Bhatt,

Vidya Balan and Kapil Sharma will share stories about their struggle and success with the actor on the show. “The idea of this show came from my autobiographical play 'Kuch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai'. It is about my setbacks and failures. I laugh at them now. My play is about my failures and setbacks. Sometimes people have come and told me they are inspired by the play. So, I thought a lot of people can give courage to others,”

US shows are here to stay!

The actor revealed that he tried his level best to get megastar Amitabh Bachchan on the show but his dates were clashing. “He said he will be on the next season,” the actor said, adding Salman Khan is also likely to be there. Though comparison with other talk shows like Karan Johar's 'Koffee With Karan' is inevitable, Kher says his show is a pure chat show. “My show will be a pure chat, one-to-one conversation. The two shows are very different. I have

Nevertheless, it was a good learning experience for me to be a part of the show. It was a great journey,” Kritika told PTI. The 25-year-old actress was paired with choreographer Savio Barnes, had a tough time in the past seasons to make partners like Bharti Singh and Meghna Malik match steps with him. here was a time when one had to surf the internet in order to catch up with the latest shows on American television. But of late, all that has changed. English channels in India like Star World now telecast some of them at the same time as in the US. In fact, the number of such shows is increasing. Some of the popular shows include 'The Big Bang Theory' which is a tongue-in-cheek look at the world inhabited by scientists. The show celebrates the eccentricities of lead character Sheldon Cooper. 'House Of Cards' starring accomplished actors like Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright in lead roles, has a story — with politics as its backdrop — and pits them against each other. The multi-awards winning show is an adaptation of a novel by the same name. 'The Newsroom' focusing on TV journalism, revolves around those who make a newsroom click. With Jeff Daniels and Emily Mortimer in pivotal roles, the show takes you through the dynamics of a commercially unsuccessful, but ethically supreme TV channel. 'Games Of Thrones' – Is there anything that this show does not touch upon? Be it pain, lust, love, mercy, loyalty or religion, every episode takes

Kher said. The 12-episode series, slated to air on Colors from July 6, will have Shah Rukh as the first guest. “We start with the top guy. He is very charming and entertaining and speaks very well. And there was a lot to catch up with him,” Kher said about his first celebrity guest.

He was patient and hard-working. He did his best for me. I am feeling sorry for him that he could not win the show because of me. For me, winning was not my goal. I just wanted to learn,” she said. Kritika was pitted against another TV actress Puja Bose for the face off on the Colors' show. After her last soap opera 'Kuch Toh Log Kahenge', Kritika took a break from TV for three years. She returned to the small screen as a host with show 'MTV Webbed'. “I am not in hurry to sign a new project. I will take my time and will choose something which will help me grow as an actress. My stint in 'Jhalak' was also good as I learnt many new dance forms on the show. I will continue dancing and it will help me in sharpening my acting skills,” she added.

HOKEY Pokey Super Premium Ice Creams celebrates the onset of the Indian monsoons with ‘Dance to Fitness’ workshop, with India’s top television youth stars, Shantanu Maheshwari and Vrushika Mehta from Channel V’s ‘Dil Dostii Dance’ fame. Building on its ‘do it yourself mix-ins’ and brand identity of ‘creating fun in all one does’, Hokey Pokey will introduce and conduct dance styles such as Bollywood, contemporary kathak, jazz rock and more by the stars.

Dream shows

VINITA Joshi who gained recognition acting in shows such as ‘Navya’ and ‘Saraswatichandra’ on Star Plus, seems to be living her dream as she presents her acting abilities in a unique show titled ‘Bhatak Lena Bawre’. Vinita says, “In ‘Bawre’, I essay the female protagonist Yamini who is a singer and I am super excited. Playing a singer is a very different experience as the way they communicate is very different. I personally watch a lot of videos to see how singers perform as it would help me get into the skin of the character.” Vinita claimed that she was more impressed with the show as it did not relate to saas-bahu drama.

L

ONDON: Andy Murray was disappointed, bitterly disappointed. Not with the fact that he had lost his Wimbledon title – anyone who thought that retaining that was a nailed-on certainty needed his head examined – but with the fact that he had played so poorly against Grigor Dimitrov to lose in the quarter-finals. That was not supposed to be in the script. Novak Djokovic reached the semi-finals for the fifth year running when he beat Croatia's Marin Cilic 6-1, 3-6, 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-2 on No.1 Court. The end of his title defence took two hours: two hours of unrelenting excellence from Dimitrov and two hours of errors, missed opportunities and failed tactics from Murray. At the end of it, the Centre Court crowd were subdued and a little confused while Bulgaria was revelling in Dimitrov’s 61, 7-6(4), 6-2 win and having their first man ever through to the semi-finals of a Grand Slam tournament. “He was the better player from start to finish,” Murray said simply. “He played better tennis than me for the entire match. Right at the beginning of the match I had break points in the first game. But my start to the match was poor. I started the match badly. And I think that gave him confidence. Simona Halep demolished Sabine Lisicki to advance to the semi-finals of the Ladies’ Singles Championship. From 4-1 down in the first set, Halep reeled off an incredible 11 consecutive games to record a 6-4, 6-0 victory in just 57 minutes. Her victory came by way of her

She continually forced the erratic Lisicki to hit one more ball thanks to stellar defence, yet she was often able to command the rallies

and get Lisicki on the run with her brand of controlled aggression, a dynamic the German was far from comfortable with. Halep’s rise from relative obscurity

to the world No.3 in the space of just 12 months has left everyone searching for an explanation as to what has paved the way for it. The emotional and physical rollercoaster of beating Maria Sharapova in a two-hour 37-minute slugfest on Wednesday has taken its toll on German Angelique Kerber; the No.9 seed unable to back up the result, falling to 20-year-old Eugenie Bouchard in a straight-sets quarter-final dismissal. Former girls’ champion Bouchard is through to her firstWimbledon semifinal and her third straight at a major with the 6-3, 6-4 victory and will meet Roland Garros finalist Simona Halep for a place in her first Grand Slam final. “It’s a normal kind of evolution of things, as the great champions get older, the newer ones come in,” Bouchard said of she and Halep. The No.13 seed stands just two wins from becoming the first former junior champion to go on and win the ladies’ singles title since Amelie Mauresmo completed the double in 1996, 10 years after her junior triumph. They’ve known each other for a decade, play tennis at the same club, are Fed cup team-mates and close friends but when Petra Kvitova and Lucie Safarova step on court for their all-Czech semi-final on Thursday the pleasantries will have to remain in the locker room. A potentialWimbledon title is at stake. It’s been almost three years since Kvitova lifted the Venus Rosewater dish on Centre Court as the No.8 seed.

Stokes included in England squad for first Test against India

L

ONDON: All-rounder Ben Stokes has returned to the England national team for the opening Test against India as the only addition to the 12-member squad that recently lost 0-1 in a two-Test series at home to Sri Lanka. The England selectors today announced a 13-member squad to be led by Alastair Cook for the first Test, commencing at Trent Bridge on July 9. The 23-year-old Stokes, who made his debut against Australia in Adelaide last year, had sustained a self-inflicted wrist injury while punching a dressingroom locker following his dismissal for a golden duck in Barbados during his subsequent tour to the West Indies. It forced him to miss the ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh and the start of the English season against Sri Lanka. The four-Test old Durham allrounder, however, regained full fitness and also did well with the ball in the domestic circuit, claiming a career-best seven for 67 for Durham against Sussex and a 10-wicket haul in the match. Although, he could not make much impression with the bat, having scored 172 runs at 28.66 in four Championship matches.Stokes showed his potential during England’s 5-0 Ashes thrashing in Australia when he scored his maiden century in his second Test at Perth and took eight wickets in Sydney. Squad: Alastair Cook (Capt), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Gary Ballance, Ian Bell, Stuart Broad, Chris Jordan, Liam Plunkett, Matt Prior, Sam Robson, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes.

Bopanna, Hlavackova Bookies laid ‘Honey Trap’ during ICL in 2008, reveals Vincent move to mixed doubles pre-quarters W L ONDON: Rohan Bopanna and Andrea Hlavackova saved all three break chances they faced against British team of Colin Fleming and Jocelyn Rae to progress to the pre-quarterfinals of the mixed doubles event of the Wimbledon Championships, here Monday. The seventh seeded IndoCzech team brushed aside the spirited challenge of unseeded British pair 6-4 7-5 in one hour and nine minutes in the second round. Bopanna and Hlavackova broke their rivals one time in each set to record the win. They will now fight it out with Russia’s Mikhail Elgin and Australian Anastasia Rodionova for a place in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Sania Mirza and Horia Tecau, seeded sixth, were leading 4-3 in the opening set of their mixed doubles second round contest against Mate Pavic and Bojana Jovanovski when rain forced suspension of play. The match will be completed today.

ELLINGTON: Banned for life for match-fixing, disgraced New Zealand cricketer Lou Vincent revealed how an “Indian bookie” posing as a sports equipment sponsor laid ‘honey Trap’ for him during the now defunct Indian Cricket League (ICL) back in 2008. In interviews to New Zealand radip channels ‘Newstalk ZB and Radio Sport’, Vincent revealed how he was taken aback to find that his “hero” was involved in fixing and how he was unable to refuse him from taking part in the ‘big fix’. “I looked at ICL as a great way to get away from New Zealand, take the family and live overseas. was good money. Throughout our NZ career, we got proper education regarding bookie approaches. Here I go to ICL and I was trying to get comfortable, trying to get excited playing with new team,” Vincent said. “Then the phone rings. Happens all the time when you are in India. On other end of the phone was an Indian guy, who wanted me to use his (sports) gear. His batting equipment and I said “yeah I will be interested. Vincent then revealed how different he felt as he walked into the hotel room of this so-called bat manufacturer from the ones he had visited on earlier tours.

“It has happened before on other tours as well, where you walk into the room and see all the equipment spread across and you pick up bits and pieces. You then negotiate a deal and come out saying ‘thank you’. “But here, I walk into the room and see there was nothing there. A young gentleman was sitting and a lady whom I thought at that point was his wife at the end of the bed,” the former right-hander said. So she wasn’t his wife, the RJ questioned, to which Vincent replied, “No she wasn’t. She was the ‘Honey Trap’. It took me about half an hour to realize that.”

Exhausted US players lie on the ground as Belgium's Axel Witsel (6) celebrates at the end of the extra time during the World Cup round of 16 soccer match at the Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador, Brazil. Belgium held on to beat US 2-1 in extra time.

Belgium edge USA 2-1 in a cliffhanger

S

ALVADOR, BRAZIL: Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku finally took the umpteenth opportunities of a pulsating game as Belgium survived a late USA rally to reach the World Cup quarter-finals. The hands, legs and even ankle of Tim Howard, coupled with some supreme defending from Matt Besler, had kept Jurgen Klinsmann’s side, who always looked a threat on the break, in it beforehand, before Marc Wilmots’ men scored twice before the 105-minute mark. A Julian Green volley nevertheless gave the Americans hope, but despite their admirable efforts, the Belgians held on to book a Brasilia date with Argentina. The American supporters made the decibel levels incalculable in the run-up to kick-off, but they were silent, hearts in mouths, within a minute of action. De Bruyne uncorked USA’s backline and sent the pacy Divock Origi one-on-

one with Howard. The 19year-old striker shot low and hard, but the 35-yearold goalkeeper saved impressively with his legs.DaMarcus Beasley was USA’s next saviour. Jan Vertonghen broke elegantly down the left and, from the byline, squared the ball towards Marouane Fellaini, who appeared set to tap home until the sliding fullback hacked it clear. It was all Belgium, with De Bruyne and Eden Hazard snapping at shots from the edge of the box, but the 32nd-minute introduction of DeAndre Yedlin for the injured Fabian Johnson gave the US a lift. The hypersonic wingback had already threatened on a couple of occasions when Michael Bradley’s gorgeous pass sent him racing down the right. A crowd of players expected Yedlin to square the ball from the byline, but he intelligently cut it back into the path of Graham Zusi,

ALVADOR, BRAZIL:Following their qualification for the Round of 16 of the World Cup with three wins in as many matches, the talk emanating from the Belgian camp was generally positive. But it was only after their hard-fought victory over a resilient USA side on Tuesday that their players admitted that those group-stage displays had left a lot to be desired.

“We weren’t all that impressive, because we were too tense. We couldn’t get into our rhythm against the compact units that we came up against,” said Kevin Mirallas, who made a considerable impact when he came off the bench on the hour mark versus USA.Although it took 30 minutes of extra time to separate Les Diables Rouges and the Stars and Stripes in Salvador, it did not take

long for the Europeans to show their true capabilities. They set the tone as early as the opening minute, as Divock Origi brought a fine save out of Tim Howard, one of many the Everton goalkeeper was forced to make on the night. The statistics spoke for themselves: 38 shots, 27 of which were on target. “We were impressive going forward. Their ’keeper kept them in it,” remarked Vin-

cent Kompany. The commanding centre-back is well aware that expectations surrounding this crop of Belgian players are huge, and that their performances in the group phase left many disappointed. As befits his role of captain, he was quick to defend his teammates, pointing out that their previous opponents had adopted a different approach from the USA.

SAO PAULO: Ottmar Hitzfeld said an emotional goodbye to his Swiss team and football Tuesday as he quit the sport after a dramatic World Cup loss to Argentina and following the death of his brother. Hitzfeld said his "heart was full of emotions" after the Swiss came just two minutes from a penalty shoot-out before Angel Di Maria's extra-time winner in Sao Paulo. "These are emotions you can only have with football, that's why I love football," he said. "Switzerland has won a lot of hearts around the world today, that is something that will make us proud." The 65-year-old German, who won the Champions League with both Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, had already announced he would retire after the World Cup. "I will go on working for TV. I'll go to games but as a journalist basically, so I have a quiet life in front of me," he said.

Injured De Jong ruled out of the World Cup

The Netherlands will be without Nigel de Jong for the rest of the FIFA World Cup through injury. The 29-year-old was forced off nine minutes into the Oranje's last-16 clash against Mexico on Sunday with a groin complaint. The Netherlands' coach Louis van Gaal admitted after the 2-1 win that De Jong was a doubt for their quarterfinal match against Costa Rica and the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) have now confirmed his tournament is over.

Deschamps: Friday is all that is on our minds

France coach Didier Deschamps on Tuesday sought to temper growing expectations generated by his team's impressive run to the World Cup quarterfinals. Les Bleus defeated Nigeria 2-0 in Monday's Round of 16 game in Brasilia to set up a quarter-final meeting with Germany on Friday. The skipper of the 1998 World Cup-winning side was keeping his feet on the ground at his squad's Brazil headquarters. "I'm a realist, my target, like my players, is Friday," he said after goals from Pogba and an own goal from Joseph Yobo beat Nigeria.

Former captains call for Germany improvement

MATCH-FIXER DENIES PREDICTING WC RESULT MUMBAI | THURSDAY, JULY 3, 2014

SANTO ANDRE (BRAZIL): Germany must improve in both defence and attack if they are to overcome France in Friday's World Cup quarter-final, say former captains Oliver Kahn and Lothar Matthaeus. "The mixture is not ideal at the moment," said Kahn, who captained Germany to their 2002 World Cup final defeat to Brazil. "There needs to be a better balance between the forwards and the creative players like Mesut Ozil. When you invest too much in attack, looking to find combinations and players in space, you don't always get into good scoring positions." Matthaeus, who holds the record of 25 World Cup appearances, said Germany's problems begin in defence as centre-backs Benedikt Hoewedes and Jerome Boateng have been used mainly as wing backs at the World Cup. "If you play in an unfamiliar position, you lack rhythm and can't produce a top performance. That was a big problem against Algeria," said the 53year-old, who won the trophy in 1990. Germany needed late goals from Andre Schuerrle and Ozil to edge a 2-1 extra-time win over Algeria in Porto Alegre on Monday and book their date against France at Rio de Janeiro's Maracana stadium.

IO DE JANEIRO: A convicted match-fixer denied a report in a German magazine that he predicted the result and details of a World Cup football match. Cameroon's football federation said it was investigating the report in der Spiegel magazine that Wilson Raj Perumal accurately predicted in an online chat with one of its journalists that Cameroon would lose 4-0 to Croatia and would have a player sent off in the first half. And that is exactly what happened in the June 18 match. Cameroon midfielder Alex Song was sent off before halftime for striking Croatia striker Mario Mandzukic in the back.

Der Spiegel's claims rang alarm bells because Perumal is the best-known match-fixer in football. He was convicted of fixing matches in Finland and suspected of fixing other games in Africa and involving African teams. He also isn't averse to selfpublicity, having recently published memoirs with two journalists as co-authors. Perumal denied having predicted the outcome. "The Facebook chat with the Der Spiegel journalist took place a few days after the match - June 21st, as confirmed by my Facebook log," his statement said. "At no time did I make reference to four goals being scored or to a red card being issued. At no time

Neymar ‘recovering well’ from thigh, knee knocks T

ERESÕPOLIS (BRAZIL): Neymar is making good progress in his recovery from thigh and knee knocks ahead of Friday's World Cup quarter-final against Colombia, Brazil's team doctor said. The Barcelona forward came out of last Saturday's last-16 win against Chile battered and bruised but has undergone treatment at Brazil's Teresopolis training base and will train normally on Wednesday. "He took a blow to the left thigh and the right knee, but he has worked alongside the rest of the squad. He is recovering very well," doctor Jose Luiz Runco told journalists. For the second day running, those players who started the epic clash against Chile were restricted to indoor work, and Runco hit back at suggestions in the Brazilian media that the team are not training hard enough, with the match against Colombia only three days away. "I need my team to play, not to train," he said. "They need to rest. They played 120 minutes at one in the after-

noon and it was a game that used up a huge amount of strength physically and emotionally." Neymar was one of those who watched on as a team of Brazilian reserves won 2-0 in a practice match against a youth side from Rio de Janeiro club Fluminense on Tuesday, with Paulinho scoring both goals. The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder was dropped from the side against Chile after disappointing

during the group stage, but is the leading contender to come back into the team against Colombia in the absence of Luiz Gustavo due to suspension. The other options for coach Luiz Felipe Scolari are to introduce Hernanes for the first time in this World Cup, or even push David Luiz forward into a holding midfield role with Dante coming into central defence for the Brazilians.

my mouth that I did not utter." One of the Spiegel reporters involved, Rafael Buschmann, said the magazine stood by its story. "We firmly stand by our assertion that Mr Perumal wrote in a Facebook chat with der Spiegel some hours before the world cup match Croatia vs Camerooon, that the result of the match will be a 4-0-victory for Croatia and that a player of Cameroon will get a red card in the first halftime," Buschmann said. Earlier, Cameroon's football federation had said it instructed its ethics committee to open an investigation. The federation, Fecafoot, evoked the possibility that seven players on its team may have been corrupted.

Maradona could be next coach of Venezuela

CARACAS:Argentine great Diego Maradona has said he could be the next coach of Venezuela, the only South American country that has never made it to the World Cup. Cesar Farias quit in November last year after the Venezuelan team, which is known as the 'Vinotinto' ('Red Wine') for its burgundy-colored kit, missed out on the Brazil finals. The Venezuelan Soccer Federation has not made any announcements about a replacement despite rumors that several coaches of local teams are being considered. "I look for serious projects ... and think that yes, if it's with security, then maybe," World Cup winner Maradona said on regional television network Telesur, when asked about the possibility. Maradona, whose well-known leftist politics made him an ally of the country's socialist government, said he planned to visit President Nicolas Maduro after the World Cup.

ARGENTINA THANK B

“POST OF GOD”

ELO HORIZONTE, BRAZIL: Argentina thanked their lucky stars and the "post of God" for scraping into the World Cup quarter-finals and began preparing on Wednesday for a weekend clash with Belgium. The Argentine team flew straight back to their camp in Belo Horizonte after beating Switzerland on Tuesday with a goal by Angel Di Maria two minutes from the end of extra time. In a heart-stopping end after a pedestrian Argentine performance, the Swiss almost equalized in the dying moments when substitute Blerim Dzemaili's header struck the post. Cabaye warns France must stay humble to survive Germany showdown

Yohan Cabaye has warned France they will be on the first plane out of Brazil if they get carried away with their own success before Friday’s quarterfinal against Germany in Rio. The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder said his team-mates need to “stay humble and not arrogant”, and also play at the same high tempo, to give themselves the best possible opportunity of reaching the World Cup semi-finals. In a fascinating tie that will evoke memories of the epic World Cup semi-final between the two nations in 1982, when West Germany’s victory on penalties was overshadowed by Toni Schumacher’s shocking foul on Patrick Battiston, France will fancy their chances of causing an upset after scoring 10 times and conceding only once en route to the last eight.

"Luck decided to wrap itself round a team that alone was not up to the task," wrote one relieved columnist Cristian Grosso in Argentina's La Nacion newspaper. Another newspaper, Clarin, baptized Di Maria the nation's new "guardian angel" in a play on his first name. Reflecting the extraordinary national tension and desperation for a third World Cup, one radio narrator was reduced to tears on air when Argentina scored.

In the dressing room afterwards, the players danced and sang fans' songs as if they had won the trophy. Their captain Lionel Messi recognized they had been lucky against a Swiss team many expected to roll over in the face of Argentina's big names and intimidating three-pronged attack. "I'm not sure if this was deserved or not. The important thing is that we're through," acknowledged Messi. "Luck is on our side."

Colombian kid Rodriguez the main man in Brazil

S

ALVADOR BRAZIL: Racing towards the camera after scoring direct from a corner at Colombia's top youth tournament in 2004, excited scouts could see James Rodriguez was a kid at ease in the limelight. A good job too, as a decade on at the World Cup the attacking midfielder's stunning strikes and terrific displays have made him among the hottest footballing properties on the planet.

His rise has been meteoric. With barely a hair on his chiseled chin the 22-year old has won league titles in Argentina and Portugal and last year swapped clubs for 45 million euros ($61.3 million) when he left Porto for mega-rich Monaco. If that fee did not grab fans' attention then five goals in four games in Brazil, including the tournament's best against Uruguay which flew in off the

crossbar from 20 meters, certainly have, sparking comparisons with Lionel Messi and Neymar. The haul, along with two assists, has made Rodriguez Colombia's top scorer at a World Cup and a hero back home as the team reached their first ever quarter-final in the tournament. Fitting statistics for a man occupying the number 10 shirt once worn by Colombia great Carlos Valderrama. "When one superstar is gone, another one has to step up. And that is Rodriguez," Valderrama said. Operating on the left or in behind the strikers, Rodriguez's reading of the game is intelligent and instinctive. Comfortable as creator and scorer he has shown his ability in the air and on the ground at the World Cup, not to mention his dance moves as he celebrates goals with a cheeky smile and a little bit of rumba. He captained Colombia's Under-20 side to the quarter-finals of the Youth World Cup and impressed on his full national debut, taking the man-of-the-match award in a 2-1 victory over Bolivia in October, 2011.

SALVADOR (BRAZIL): Jurgen Klinsmann has called on his United States players to toughen their mental approach as he begins to plot the long road towards the 2018 World Cup. Klinsmann and the United States exited Brazil 2014 on Tuesday after losing 2-1 to Belgium in a thrilling last 16 game which exploded into life during extra-time. The Americans, who had confounded pre-tournament predictions by qualifying from a group which also contained Germany, Portugal and Ghana, ran Belgium to the wire and almost equalised as they fought back from 2-0 down. While Klinsmann was delighted with his team's performance, the former German international wasted no time in looking forward to the challenges ahead. A busy schedule sees the US play in the CONCACAF Gold Cup regional tournament next year before a 2016 which includes the Centennial Copa America, staged in the United States, and the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Beyond those events looms the 2018 World Cup in Russia, which Klinsmann said he plans to stick around for. But before then, Klinsmann wants to see his team adopt a harder mental edge. While basking in the success of their Brazilian campaign, Klinsmann believes his players are guilty of showing too much respect to opponents. "We are still in the process of learning to take our game to the opponent," he said. "No matter what their name is, we cannot just wait too long to start our game. I think there is a little bit too much respect when it comes to the big stage -- why not play them eye-to-eye? I don't know how many years that takes to change but it's something we have to go through. The players have got to realise they have to take it to the opponent." Klinsmann is confident however that the foundations have been laid. The future, as represented by teenagers such as Julian Green, who scored against Belgium, is bright, says Klinsmann. "We will find ways to introduce new young players and develop our program to develop the game at every level," he said. "I think we've done a lot of work. We're excited about building a next Olympic team cycle which is huge for us going to Rio de Janeiro in two years (for the Olympics)." The burgeoning popularity of football in the US, reflected in record television viewing figures and huge crowds at World Cup viewing events, also augurs well, Klinsmann believes.
