has also raised the issue of duty hours of doctors. According to Dr Sagar Mundada, President of MARD, “Minister Vinod Tawde has given us verbal assurances that our problems will be solved, but we want a Government Resolution to be passed in this issue agreeing to all our demands. Till then we will not call off our indefinite strike.” The strike had an adverse effect on the people as medical services were affected. All public hospitals
were hit badly since the doctors refused to provide even emergency emergency medical services to patients. One of the patients who is being treated in K.E.M. hospital said , “we cant afford private treatment so we came here, but we are suffering now due to the strike. If the strike continues we will be affected badly. People like us who can’t afford private medical treatment will have to suffer.” According to acting dean of
K.E.M. hospital Dr. Anil Gwalani, “R.M.O.s are important people, definitely people are suffering. We senior doctors are performing our duties and also the duties which have to be handled by our resident doctors. They are justified in their demands which should be considered by state government.” Dr. Tatyasaheb Lahane, Dean at J.J. hospital said that the out-patient department, emergency ward and surgical procedures are likely to be affected due to the strike.

M
inister for Medical Education Vinod Tawde yesterday disclosed that the state government had agreed to 95 per cent of the demands put forth by the representatives of Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD). Speaking to news persons at his Mantralaya office here he however expressed displeasure over the insistence of the MARD representatives who wanted the government

to issue the Government Resolution (GR) right after the meeting that was held late on July 2 which was not possible. Tawde urged the striking resident doctors to call off their strike and resume duties in the interest of the patients. Commenting upon the demand for hike in stipend for medical students, he said that the government will check the financial implication of the decision. Tawde stated that the government has agreed to give an adhoc rise of Rs 5,000 per month. At present the resident doctors get a stipend in the range of Rs 43,000 to Rs 45,000 which is second to Delhi where resident doctors get Rs 52,000. He said that in other states like Assam, Bihar, Chandigarh, Chattisgarh, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh it ranges between Rs 17,000 to Rs 24,000. Referring to the other main demand of the striking resident doctors about reducing the working hours from 24 hours to eight hours, Tawde stated in that case the strength of resident doctors will have to be increased to provide 24 hours health services. At present there are 2,191 junior residents and 87 senior residents. If the demand of eight hours duty were to be agreed it would place an additional burden of Rs 352.63 crore per month on the department whose annual budget itself is Rs 354 crore. He said that if a 12 hour duty schedule is agreed to, the government will have to bear a burden of Rs 117.54 crore. Giving point-by-point clarification on the MARD demands, he said
that the government has agreed to transfer Prof Dr Humane from Nagpur to Akola and order divisional probe against him. Tawde stated that it was decided that in order to have more seats for Service Bond, the vacancies in newly created Senior Resident Doctors category will be filed as per qualifications. He added that the government has agreed to reduce the time frame for placement to resident doctors signing Service Bond from three months to two months. Furthermore, in order to bring more transparency and bringing the MARD representatives on board with the government, it was decided to set up a committee comprising of Medical Education and MARD representatives to find out ways to reduce the placement period even further. Tawde disclosed that the government has agreed to install CCTV cameras at ICU, Labour and Casualty Wards and put up flex banners displaying warnings against attacks on doctors. He said that the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent will assist the doctors in filing FIR in cases of assault and the Medical Education department will follow it up with the Home department for action. Tawde stated that the government has agreed to TB and maternity leave for resident doctors, but since the syllabus is decided by the Medical Council of India (MCI) the government will seek directive from the MCI. He said that the government will give the signed copy of the minutes of the meeting to the MARD representatives.

ith the arrival of monsoon, schools have started everywhere, much to the relief of students. However, recently at Behram Pada in Bandra, an Urdu medium primary school called Behram Nagar Municipal School, has been in a dilapidated condition and never reopened. The parents and students were promised that the school shall be repaired by June. This did not happen and when the monsoon began, the children found their
school locked and were shifted to some distance away to Kherwadi Municipal school for the time being. This issue was brought to notice of leader of opposition in civic body Devendra Amberkar by the residents who have been consistently pressing to the finish repair of the school at the earliest. Ramesh Pawar, Dy MC visited the school premises to inspect the condition of the building. Pawar has spoken to director of engineering services and projects Laxman Vhatkar, who has asked a consultant to look into the matter and repair the building. “The consultant will repair the building at the earliest possible time and then give a stability report,” said Amberkar, adding, “The school will be repaired from the funds of MPs and MLAs.”

HOLY JOURNEY BEGINS...Piligrims move towards holy cave shrine of Amarnath, in Baltal on Thursday.
Soon, your smartphone can tell if you are pregnant Small add-on devices could allow your smartphone to take pregnancy tests or monitor diabetes, scientists say. Researchers at the Hanover Centre for Optical Technologies (HOT), University of Hanover, Germany, have developed a self-contained fibre optic sensor for smartphones with the potential for use in a wide variety of biomolecular tests, including those for detecting pregnancy or monitoring diabetes. According to the researchers, the readings of the sensor can run through an application on a smartphone which provide real-time results. When properly provisioned, the smartphone user has the ability to monitor multiple types of body fluids, including blood, urine, saliva, sweat or breath. In case of medical applications, the sensor readings can be combined with the GPS signal of a smartphone and users can then be guided to the next
drug store, hospital or the ambulance, the researchers said. The sensor uses the optical phenomenon of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) - which occurs when light causes electrons on the surface of a thin film to jostle - to detect the composition of a liquid or the presence of particular biomolecules or trace gases. "We have the potential to develop small and robust lab-on-a-chip devices for smartphones. So, surface plasmon resonance sensors could become ubiquitous now," said Kort Bremer, coauthor of the new study with Bernhard Roth, director, Hanover Centre for Optical Technologies (HOT), University of Hanover. Surface plasmon resonance is a phenomenon commonly used for biosensing, but typically requires bulky lab equipment involving both a light detector and light source. Smartphones already have both of these, allowing the minimalist, U-shaped device the researchers designed to
consist solely of a 400micrometre diameter core multimode fibre with a silvercoated sensing region. In a proof-of-concept version of the sensor, Bremer carefully excised the polymer coating from a 10 millimetre segment of the optics cable to expose the bare 400 micrometre diameter glass fibre core. He then cleaned the segment, subjected it to a silver-coating process, added a small well in which to pour the solutions being observed, and polished both ends of the fibre to 45 degree angled faces. They were then adhered to the phone's case and, thus, to its LED and camera, the latter of which was affixed with a diffraction grating to separate the light beam into an emission spectrum. In subsequent experiments, the device's sensitivity was tested using various concentrations of glycerol, and the team confirmed it was on par with current equipment, at a fraction of the cost and size.
Aliens may actually exist and resemble humans, possessing limbs and a head, and could even have the capacity to think intelligently, a University of Cambridge expert has claimed. Biologist Simon Conway Morris, an expert in evolution at the University of Cambridge, said the chances of alien life evolving elsewhere in the universe are "pretty high". Morris, in a new book called The Runes Of Evolution, discusses a theory called convergence, which suggests evolution may proceed along certain lines rather than being a chaotic process. If true, this would mean extraterrestrials are "almost guaranteed" to possess limbs and a head, and think intelligently - just like us earthlings, 'mirror.Co.Uk' reported. "Evolution is far from a random process. If the outcomes of evolution are at least broadly predictable, then what applies on Earth will apply across the Milky Way, and beyond," Morris said. "I would argue that in any habitable zone that doesn't boil or freeze, intelligent life is going to

every one in 100 throws, that still leads to a very large number of intelligences scattered around, that are likely to be similar to us," he said.

The study group will be headed by Principal Secretary Finance (Expenditure) and comprise of Secretary General Administration, Additional Chief Secretary Information Technology, Principal Secretary (Financial Reforms) and principal secretaries of Industry and Tribal Development. chases more streamlined and transparent. The Minister for Finance further stated that the White Paper on the fiscal health of the state had been presented to the state legislature in the budget session of the state legislature in March this year. The White Paper had talked about setting up such a study group to bring clarity and transparency in government purchases. Mungantiwar stated that the Government Resolution (GR) to set up the study group has been officially issued on July 1.
s the flight delay row has taken an ugly turn, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis yesterday termed the reports regarding he delaying an Air India flight as misleading. He also warned of legal action against people showing him in bad light. Fadnavis, who is currently on a tour to the US, took to Twitter to break his silence over the massive controversy which has erupted following media reports of him delaying Air India's flight, AI-191 to New York on June 29 by nearly 57 minutes. The CM said in a series of tweets said that enough is enough. Once I am back to India, I will initiate proceedings of criminal defamation. Passengers sitting besides and behind me are witness that I was sitting quietly waiting for departure. Not even once I asked to offload me. “If at all any report that has been submitted, states that I refused to travel without my delegation then it is a blatant lie because I reiterate, the reports of me delaying flight are misleading. In fact when I had already boarded how can I say I won't travel without a delegation”, he added further. The controversy surrounding Fadnavis and Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju, who is also accused of delaying Leh-New Delhi Air India flight, forced the Prime Minister's office to seek a report from the Civil Aviation Ministry. Meanwhile, Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju has offered his apologies to passengers who were inconvenienced due to the two incidents.

Row erupts over ministers’ remarks on education in madarsas given official status By Prashant Hamine

he embattled government of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis plunged into a fresh contoversy yesterday over remarks by Minister for Minority Affairs Eknath Khadse and his Minister of State for Minority Affairs Dilip Kamble over granting official status to education taught in Madarsas and counting students taking only religious education as out of school students. By evening Congress and Samajwadi Party slammed the government over its move as
Dilip Kamble unconstitutional and illegal, while the SP warned the government of not to interfere in the functioning of the Madarsas. In the evening it was left to Minister for School Education Vinod Tawde to clarify
Mathametics and Social Science in Madarsas is to bring these students in the main stream. Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) president Sanjay Nirupam alleged that the government was trying to show bias and demanded that it should immediately withdraw its decision. He said that the governments decision to conduct survey of school going children and to omit the Madarsa going children from it was discriminatory. Minister of State for Minority Affairs Dilip Kamble clarified that even the previous Congress led government had not given official sanction to the education being taught in the Madarsas. He added that the government was only conducting a survey of those children who are deemed as out-of-school, who do not take formal education. He added that the scheme of modernisation of Madarsas will continue. At present there are 1,890 Madarsas in the state wherein about two lakh students are taking education. .S. Consul General Tom Vajda hosted the U.S. Independence Day celebration on Thursday evening at Taj Lands End in Bandra. The event marked the 239th anniversary of U.S. independence and featured 'Hollywood' theme to celebrate U.S.-India ties in film and entertainment. Freedom of expression through the arts – and films in particular – is an important value shared by the United States and India, the world’s two largest democracies. The film and entertainment industries are just two examples of the robust cooperation between two countries, said the Consul General Tom Vajda.
The evening’s festivities included performances of the two national anthems, a Color Guard presentation by the U.S. Marines and remarks by Consul General Vajda. The Guest of Honor at the grand event was Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan. "I am very honoured to be here for this auspicious occasion. This indeed brings Bollywood and Hollywood closer. When I had been to the US, I was presented with the 'key to the city'. When I asked what does that mean, they informed me that if I am speeding on a highway and if I am caught, I will be taken to the nearest police station," said Bachchan in a light manner.

As BJP leader K S Eshwarappa began speaking, he was interrupted frequently by the ruling Congress members which enraged his party members who staged a walkout, followed by their counterparts in JDS also. Minister and Leader of the House S R Patil told reporters it is very unfortunate that BJP and JD(S) members walked out only because some from the ruling bench interrupted them. "The government has no intention of protecting anyone. But government has no power for removal of Lokayukta as per the Lokayukta Act 1984," he said. Later, Eshwarappa told reporters that the government should seek opinion from legal experts on the charges
levelled against Lokayukta. A situation had arisen where all officers are scared of Lokayukta due to threat from his son, Eshwarappa said. The was protecting a corrupt Lokayukta, he alleged. JDS senior member Basavarj Horatti wanted to know as to why government is protecting the Lokayukta. An FIR was filed yesterday against the Lokayukta's son in connection with the alleged scandal on the basis of a complaint that an executive engineer was asked to pay Rs 1 crore bribe to avoid a raid. Rao, a former High Court Chief Justice, has rejected allegations that his son was involved in the scandal and said he would resign if the charge was proved correct. The case has been handed over to a Special Investigation team by the government on the request by the Lokayukta.

EATING OUT Gayatri Sahasrabuddhe
amadan is probably every foodie’s favourite time of the year. With the best of non-vegetarian fare available in places like Kurla, Mahim and Bandra, you’re really spoilt for choice. The city really comes alive in these belts during evenings. The sights, sounds, aroma, the sheer vibrancy and excitement in the air and the hustle-bustle of hungry eaters all make it an experience that you must indulge in. The Minara Masjid lane at Mohammed Ali Road, is probably every South Mumbaikar's go-to place for an 'Iftar' meal. There’s also the ever popular Bohri Mohalla and Bhendi Bazaar that serves different specialities that are equally good if not better. Make sure you make a couple of trips to explore and sample everything on offer. With throngs of people visiting every year, the food here is made in bulk and sometimes doesn’t live up to the expectations and hype surrounding it. Some might even find it too crowded, unhygienic, hot and maybe even a tad bit unappetising. Despite the shortcomings, it makes for a worthy experience. Try to visit as early as possible as the crowds begin to flood here post 9pm.
Kebabs and curries
Saandal
You might mistake it for an idli but it’s actually a sweet dish made of rice. Saandal (Rs. 20) – a rice cake which is covered by a mild sweet cream layer which is perfect for those who don’t like their dessert to be too sugary. You can spot a number of such stalls in the lane.
While you visit make sure you try the different kebabs and curries available here. Kebabs like Chicken 65 and Bater are some of the specialities here. Janata stall serves a delicious Chicken 65. For Bater (quail), try the Masala Bater or Tandoori Bater at Salim Jamal Fast Food opposite Noorani Milk Center. Definitely try the Seekh Kebabs at Al Madina and the sumptuous tandoori chicken which is everyone's favourite.
Khichra
Chinese-N-Grill
Khichra (Rs.30 for a bowlful) a thick paste of meat, lentils and spices served with a dash of lime and is much like haleem, another must try. Savor it at the stall diagonally opposite KGN Shawarma.
Start with the best, so I suggest you walk into the lane right to Chinese-N-Grill and start your meal here. Make sure you have the Nalli Nihari (Rs.230), a slow cooked stew served with bone marrow. It is one of the best you will get in the city. Also try the Thread Chicken (Rs.320), a crunchy fried crisp chicken starter. There’s also the Mutton Paaya soup (Rs.180), which is deliciously spicy and flavourful. Gulp it all down with a nice Kashmiri Jaljeera drink.
Sweets
This has to be the icing on the cake, so make sure you keep sufficient place for Malpua (Rs.95), an Indianised pancake, which you can have at Bombay Sweet Mart near Suleman Usman. Make sure you have it hot with Rabdi. Vegetarians can rejoice as an eggless version is also available. Visit Suleman Usman Mithaiwala for a really lavish spread of sweets. Try the different flavours of Phirni, halwas and their famous Aflatoon and for those looking for something cool to quench their thirst – there is always the famous masala milk served at the various sweetmart shops.
Shawarma
Probably the only time in the year when you will get to eat a tasty shawarma for Rs.30 only. Grilled for hours and wrapped to perfection with mayonnaise that oozes out. Grab one at the makeshift stalls as you enter the masjid lane.

he number of judges across the country with a roving eye and huge libido is very rare in the country. Judges too are human and it is unfair that we expect them to be different from other citizens. A judge also is amenable to temptations. In a weak, unguarded moment, he may do things which get him into deep trouble. No wonder a judge finds it difficult to rise up to the expectations of people. And when a judge falls, there are not many who sympathise with him. There could be force of circumstances which might have led the judge to some hasty decision. To the people, when a judge attempts rape, it is a big shock. They put him on a high pedestal. A judge cannot do any wrong. He is an epitome of justice. There can be no dark side in him. People build an exalted image of him and they expect him to live up to it. A Himachal Pradesh judge is in deep trouble. He is facing serious charges. He is said to have committed a sexual offence. With serious complaints against him, he cannot hold his job. He has the blessings of many and he may emerge from it all completely exonerated. Perhaps the judges will breathe more free if the society lifts the straitjacket they put on them and help them breathe a little more freely.

country’s prevailing political situation
I
N the by-elections in five states of the country, candidates of the respective ruling parties, governing the concerned states, have won. In Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Mehgalaya, and Tripura, the majority of the voters have preferred to cast their votes in favour of the different ruling parties governing the states, than to the opposition parties, which could give rise to increased clamouring by the political opposition in the aforementioned states for earlier elections in some states and to allege a loss of credibility of the administration in other states whose terms have not even reached midway. It is possibly yet another indication that notwithstanding the denouement of various alleged and proved scandals and the expressions of sundry dissatisfactions and angst which perennially plague the Indian polity, the voters, in general, have no reason to display a complete loss of confidence with their respective current state governments by voting out the candidates of the ruling parties as overtones of annoyance with a particular dispensation.
lective opinion of any concerned person or the party which he or she represents or often of both. While a victory is an occasion of satisfaction for a particular ruling party, a defeat is an admonition that necessary correctives need to be implemented to prevent further erosion of political credibility for a political party. Nevertheless, margins of victory are also an indicator to what extent caution and re-evaluation of governance methods needs to be undertaken. Credible allegations of sharp practices by the ruling party to win an election have also been a part of the Indian political lore. They have undoubtedly occurred and are a cause of apprehension and outrage, but to the credit of the method of holding elections in India, use of govern-
By-polls reflect electorate’s mood Each of the states where mid-terms election for a particular seat in the provincial assemblies have been held have their particular political attributes, which are simultaneously conspicuous in their uniqueness of political and social culture and yet display a general pattern of similarity with the rest of the country as regards political credibility of candidates, good governance, and expectations of greater security and creation of scope for legitimate economic opportunities and initiatives by those in power; all contributing to the strengthening of the unity and stability of the country. It appears that in each state the propinquity of the general political mood of the people is to affirm their confidence in the ruling party for the time being. They have decided to wait till the next assembly election, and would cast their referendum as the context necessitates at that time. In the political history of the country, postindependence, by-elections in a particular seat or seats have repeatedly been pointers to the degree of credibility political rulers of the country enjoy with the electorate at any given point in time. They are a prominent and crucial window of opportunity for the people to communicate to the politicians of their col-
BY AND LARGE Ranajoy Sen ment machinery or political high-handedness by any ruling party is thankfully on the wane, if not completely thwarted in most parts of the country. The first by-elections which reflected a general mood of the country were those held immediately in the aftermath of India’s debacle in a brief border war with China in the winter of 1962. In the beginning of 1963, elections were held for three vacant seats of Parliament. Those were seats where the Congress Party had secured repeated victories. But, in that spring season of 1963, the electorate elected three candidates from various opposition parties, who were inveterate critics of the Congress. It was akin to the tolling of a warning bell for the Congress government of the day, headed by the towering Jawaharlal Nehru. People expressed their displeasure at the manner the government handled the country’s defence
matters; one of the paramount factors as regards the country’s security. It was probably the first harbinger – probably ignored by the Congress party - which ultimately culminated with the Congress party’s debacle in the general elections in 1967. In hindsight it seems that those mid-term elections in 1963 for three seats in Parliament were the first of the kind which acted as a channel for manifestation of popular discontent.
Jaya’s made an amazing comeback In the 1970’s mid-term elections were held in several states: in individual seats as also for state assemblies. The Congress won some and lost others. Noteworthy was the Congress defeat in the Gujarat state elections to a motley combination of parties, titled the “Janata Front.” The “Emergency” followed and democratic elections and its attendant parleys between the ruling party and the opposition stood still for about 19 months. Post-“Emergency”, the frequency of by-elections gradually increased. It has been so, because the pattern of simultaneous elections in Parliament and all state assemblies has been broken. Elections in some part of the country or the other are held at smaller intervals in time; consequently, the frequency and necessity of by-elections have also increased significantly. Added to the general and state level elections are those of municipal elections in urban and also “Panchayat” elections in rural areas: they also necessitate by-elections. But, the relevance of by-elections is mostly confined to Parliamentary and state assembly elections. The victorious candidates of the assembly by-polls would do well to ensure that their victories propel them to work more effectively and wisely for the good of the people. Noteworthy is the victory of the candidate in Tamil Nadu. She is the illustrious current chief minister of the state: J. Jayalalithaa. Embroiled in a particularly controversial case where a judicial ruling had compelled her to resign, she, after receiving some legal relief, has made a spectacular comeback, while the final outcome of the case against her is yet to be decided. Elected candidates and their respective political parties need to resolve to work better and harder for the improvement of the quality of the country’s polity. It would qualitatively and quantitatively ameliorate the dynamics of democracy in India.
The power of prayer O
ften people say behind every successful man is a woman. But I say behind every success, there is the Divine saying “I am behind you”. And Divine dawns in you when you pray and cry for it. You don’t need any special qualifications or abilities to pray. Whether you are wise person or not, whether you are rich or poor, you can pray. Prayer is a vital tool to improve your life. When you feel the obstacle is too much to handle, deep prayer can work miracles. What you can do, you do. What you cannot do, you pray for it! Whatever you do, know that the higher power has the final say and you can tap that power through your prayers. Prayer doesn’t mean just sitting and chanting some words. It’s about being in that serene, calm and meditative state. That is why, in the Vedic tradition, before prayer comes dhyana (meditation) and there is dhyana after prayer. When the mind is focused, the prayer becomes far more powerful.
When you pray there should be total involvement. If the mind is preoccupied elsewhere then that is no prayer at all. When there is pain there is more involvement. That’s why people turn to prayer when they are in pain. Prayer is the cry of a soul. Prayer happens when you feel grateful or when you feel utterly helpless. In either case your prayers will be answered. When you feel helpless, prayer
outsmart the Divine. Usually you give the time that is leftover; when you have nothing else to do, no guests to attend to, no parties to attend to, you go to the Divine. This is not quality time. Give prime time to the Divine and you will definitely be rewarded. If your prayers are not answered, it is because you have never given quality time. For your prayers to be answered, the desire has to be intense. Intense desire leads you to devotion. Devotion arises when you have faith and you experience the Divine’s presence around you. happens by itself. That’s why we say 'Nirbal Don’t be in a hurry to get what you seek toh Balram'. BJP’s tainted ministers and VIP racism THE ugly incident of a New York bound AI flight being delayed by over an hour because the CM's principal secretary Pardeshi forgot to carry his old passport which had a valid US visa stamp needs to be condemned by one and all. Maharashtra's young and dynamic Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis should have pulled up his principle secretary and asked him to come by the next flight than keeping 250 other fliers waiting anxiously fortheir no fault, some may even be having other important commitments ahead. Such things don't happen in other countries. Such VVIP babu culture should even be stopped in our country. YET another case of misuse of power by our leaders when Air India flight to US was delayed by an hour for reasons that aide of CM forgot his Visa copy. One wonder how such a senior office must be discharging his official duties in his day to day life when he can forget his visa copy while going on to US with CM. Instead of waiting for his documents to arrive, CM should have proceeded without his aide as a lesson in punctuality. It's sad that CM prevailed upon delaying the

WE should try out day/ night Test cricket and bring variety to the game. Australia and New Zealand will soon be playing a Test match under lights with a pink coloured ball. Gate money at Test cricket venues is falling as a lot of fans cant make it to the stadiums during the day. A day/night Test match will also open up new possibilities as both the pitch and the ball will behave differently in the evening conditions and we may see more result oriented matches instead of lifeless games. Purists might disagree with the idea, but then there were a lot of noises when the 20 overs format was released and today the short games are a rage with the masses.
IT is shocking to learn from your lead “Lady Drinks One Too Many, Dashes Against Tea Stall…” ADC 1st July 2015. After the Hi-profile Lawyer Jahanvi of the Legal Department of Reliance Group who was caught driving in an inebriated and killed two people, and another woman also caught near Bandra Reclamation driving in inebriated state and banged her car against two cabs, now it is a hiprofile society lady Nidhi Anil Parikh who drove her car into a tea vendor’s stall at Carter Road, Bandra and dashed against some parked cars and had consumed alcohol. It has become a style for hiprofile society women to drive in inebriated state and cause damage to lives and properties. The Jahanvi case was in fact a wake up call for the police department to be vigil against women driving in inebriated state. But sadly they still seem to be in deep slumber, otherwise the two cases would have not occurred. I am sorry to put it on record that the police officials seem to having a soft corner towards women and are also trying to pay scant regard to their duties and never seem to be bothered.

Minister Fadnavis is desperate to save the duo. Vinod Tawde is in thick of controversy as CM is facing yet another controversy. The State is coming under a cloud over award of Rs. 191 crore contract without inviting tenders and it is a serious lapse. The CM has formed a firewall for shielding the controversial minister from embarrassing media queries. And now Government field a spokes person to defend such controversial issues. Both the State and the Central are busy addressing controversies rather than doing any developmental work as promised in the manifesto. It is trouble time for Tawde. — Nicks Maniam, Kharghar
IT would be appropriate if Absolute Corruption Day is also celebrated with pomp and glory in India like Fathers Day, Mothers Day, Childrens Day Womans Day, Friendship Day, Daughters Day, Sons Day, Valentine Day, et al . It would also go down well if the Guinness Book of World also registers this fact and India would occupy a pride of place in its annals as far as corruption is concerned. It is with pride I say that the people who commit such financial atrocities are visionaries because they make sure that not only theirs but the pecuniary needs of the next three generation of their kin are also taken care of. The recent tumultuous happenings in the BJP corridors of power regarding the quartet Sushama Swaraj, Vijay Raje, Smriti Irani and Pankaja Munde have shown that all politician are cast of the same mode be it Congress BJP or AAP. Perhaps corruption is contagious and this disease has been infected upon the BJP after occupying the treasury benches which had earlier seated the Congress party for 10 years. — Hemant Hemmady, Virar
Drink, drive and Mumbai’s roads
Generally young drivers in Mumbai are in common practice to continue skipping signal and drive vehicles exceeding speed limit in an inebriated state of mind MUMBAI roads are becoming highly dangerous as we come across many accidents due to drunk driving. Rash and negligent driving is the root cause for all the major accidents. Road accidents are part parcel if you drive carelessly on the road. To control the speed the cops are standing at focal points with speed guns to check the over speeding vehicles and issue summons and fine them heavily. To avoid drunken driving they check at random the drivers with alcohol meters and fine the drunkards heavily on the spot. If
the young drivers continue to skip the signal, over speed and consume alcohol while driving. It is now the turn of lady drivers to do the damage as they fight for equal rights involve in drunk driving as well causing chaos on the roads. It is time for cops to call shots and punish without gender difference and maintain their good work by levying heavy penalty on lady drivers as well. The road users should follow the rules without fail and help the traffic constables to do their duty without any favour.

EW DELHI: In a relief to BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, Supreme Court yesterday stayed the execution of a non-bailable warrant issued against him by an Assam court for allegedly delivering a hate speech at a university there. A bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi and M Y Eqbal also issued notice to the Centre on the plea challenging constitutional validity of certain penal provisions pertaining to offences of rioting and hate speech. At the outset, senior advocate T R Andhyarujina, appearing for Swamy, said, "this man has been subjected to incredible harassment for giving lecture in a University." The bench, which decided to hear arguments on the constitutional validity of certain IPC provisions, asked Swamy to move to the high court or a competent court with his individual case of issuance of warrant for allegedly delivering hate speech. "We are issuing notice confined to prayer one and two (issues related to constitutional validity of certain penal provisions)," the bench said. Later, the bench stayed the execution of the non-bailable warrant (NBW) for six weeks and allowed Swamy to move a competent court within

QUICK mOnSOOn TIPS We asked Dimple Nahar, owner of 2Divine — The Lifestyle Temple, for a few tips for effective monsoon dressing. Here’s what she says: n Wear flip flops instead of closed shoes. Pick colourful, funky flip-flops and peep-toes, which are a dime a dozen during the monsoon. Avoid wearing fancy shoes. n Wear a water-proof wrist watch. Leather and metal watches become dull and discoloured in the rain. Choose a water resistant watch with silicon or plastic straps. n Carry vibrant, stylish waterproof handbags. Monsoon bags and totes with newspaper prints, colour block, fancy star prints and retro styles in orange hues, monochromes and deep shades in digital prints add an edge to any attire! n Wear stylish raincoats and carry sturdy umbrellas — add a bit of zing to your look with a fashionable — neon and transparent umbrella!
Little princess We love this Disney Princess umbrella from HyperCITY, and your daughter will too. Price `499 Girls’ gummies These gumboots for girls from Raindrops are super cute! Price `4,250
n Wear trendy hooded tops which will save your head from the rain. n Wear floral knee-length sleeveless dresses. Get playful with short skirts and sling tops. Men can also experiment with colourful, knee-length shorts during the monsoon. Rubber ducky These cute yellow gumboots from Raindrops are perfect for a rainy day. Price `4,250
n Play with colour, but avoid whites and wear loose denims, shorts and capris. Purple-xing This purple raincoat by Sonya Vajifdar will keep your kids dry and happy through the monsoons. Price `3,500
n Pick knee length gumboots in quirky hues such as turquoise, yellow and fuchsia pink. n Tie your hair up in easy hairstyles such as a top knot or a loose braid and wear water-proof makeup.

the sOie store looks like a regular lingerie store from a distance, but when you enter it, you will realise that it’s a complete boutique! pooja salvi visits to find out more
W
hen I first saw SOIE on the 2nd floor of Phoenix Marketcity, it looked like a highly priced lingerie store. The store gives off a subtle vibe with an elegant combination of dark grey on pink. You may think that the grey made it look dull, but the ample lighting and glass surfaces brightened up the place. With sufficient space for you to swiftly browse through, I think the place has done a pretty decent job of transforming itself into a complete boutique. The mannequins showcase the brand’s lingerie, dresses and gowns and while at a glance, the gowns and dresses seem run-off-the-mill, they aren’t so bad. The materials SOIE uses are soft and comfortable and prices are not exorbitant, with full-length gowns priced at `4,500 and short dresses at `2,000. Just because they’re priced at such a decent rate doesn’t mean that they falter when it comes to design. SOIE is a store that boasts of a team of in-house fashion consultants and designers that provide them with the best, latest fashion requirements. The store houses chic leggings in up to 40 different colours with prices starting from `490. Along with this, they also stock inners and tank tops in various sizes. Priced reasonably between `290 and `330, the tank tops are available in a variety of colours and designs.

The lingerie collection doesn’t just look stylish, it is also comfortable. Again, with a wide range of colours, the store also has different styles — sports, lace, padded, seamless and wired. The sports bras start from `390. A section of the store is dedicated to the newly launched Warner collection, derived from extremely famous female superheroes. It includes innerwear, leggings, t-shirts and night gowns. The material is extremely soft, like how nightwear should be. The Wonder Woman Nightgown is priced at `1,390 and the Wonder Woman sleepwear (shorts and top) at `1,190. Overall, the store offers you a complete shopping experience and while they may specialise in lingerie, it’s not all they focus on. here’s a reason why I love gifts more than pampering myself. Sure, I can pick and choose exactly what I want, when I want it, but unwrapping a gift and seeing what’s inside is a completely different feeling. It’s because of the element of surprise, which is almost as exciting as what’s in the box! Enter Sugarbox, Niharika Jhunjhunwala’s contribution to the growing trend of curated gift boxes that are delivered to your doorstep, every month. While you’re paying for yourself, the handpicked goodies remain a secret until you open the box. What makes it more exciting is that unlike most surprise boxes, you’re not going to have to make do with samples! They give you six to nine full-sized products, and so far, most of it has been pretty interesting.
the concept When you’re reading about the concept, expected words and phrases are thrown at you. It’s a novel idea, there’s a team of specialised in-house stylists, it’s all created to suit a theme…But, none of this matters as much as what’s inside the box. And, that’s where they’ve found a winning formula. Lucky holders of the May box were treated to chopsticks, bag charms, sling bags, ear phones, chocolates… you get my drift. Subscription isn’t cheap, but you do get great deals (and discounts) on the retail price of most items. A monthly plan costs `1,499, while a 3-month plan costs `4,197. If you stretch your budget, you can even splurge on the 6 (`7,794) or 12-month plan (`14,388).
surprises that lie inside, and they score major points on this front. A big white box, tied with a pretty, broad ribbon that matches their theme and coloured tissue hiding the contents. The best part is that the box isn’t flimsy — I’ve been re-using it all month! While I was happy with the products, it’s the little things that really stood out. From the personalised card attached to the ribbon to an envelope with a card telling you about the theme, every little detail is carefully thought out and put together. Whether you’ve had a bad day; or just need a pick-me-up, opening a box like this definitely does the trick.

I’ve been won over by Sugarbox, but for those with a smaller budget, indulging may be a bit of a stretch. If I was to nitpick, I could probably get all the products somewhere at a cheaper price, but they wouldn’t come specially packaged to my doorstep. A few budget options may help them see more customers, but apart from the price, everything about the boxes spells luxury. I’m also still waiting for someone to target guys! Sure, we love our knickknacks and girly products, but a few pampering options for men who want to feel as special once a month wouldn’t hurt! A trip to Assam would be incomplete without visiting Jorhat — its cultural capital. Verus Ferreira tells you why you shouldn’t skip out on a visit to this small town
B
efore you read any further, you should know a little bit about Jorhat. Widely renowned as the tea capital of India, this is one of the most important cities in Assam. It’s also one of the state’s 23 districts and is often referred to as the cultural capital of Assam, mainly because of the cultural diversity in the area. Rowriah Airport, a civilian air deck, is located close to the heart of the city. Originally formed by two markets or ‘hats’ (Chowkihat and Macharhat) on the eastern and western banks of the river Bhogdoi, the city of Jorhat was the last capital of the Ahom Dynasty and is home to several historical monuments of Assamese culture. In 1794, the reigning king of the Ahom Kingdom, Gaurinath, shifted the capital from the original which was Sibsagar, to Jorhat. In 1817, the town was destroyed by Burmese invasions. But, when British rule was established, it contributed to the reemergence of this historic town. Today, Jorhat is a bustling township that boasts not only of cultural attractions, but also several tea gardens, which attract tourists all year round.
Tea time Did you know that your daily cup of tea goes through various processes to get the right flavour? I learnt this when I visited the Tocklai Research Association (TRA), which is the oldest and largest research station of its kind in the world and the nerve centre of the tea industry in Assam. The centre came to be known as the scientific department of the Indian Tea Association (ITA) in the year 1900, after which it was consolidated with the creation of the Tocklai Experimental Station in 1911. This led to the formation of the Tea Research Association (TRA) in 1964. Through a local contact, I managed to organise a day tour of the centre, where the entire process of tea research was explained to me, from the cultivation and the sourcing of the raw materials to how the tea is made in a model tea factory. Our guide showed us various tea plantations and explained the nuances of tea cloning, tea tasting the tea making processes. The centre has dozens of labs that carry out research, which includes a study on the influence of environmental factors such as soil, climate, moisture, topography of the land, proximity to the jungles, characteristics of the tea leaf, yield and quality improvement. The research is shared with tea estate owners from all over India, to enable them to improve tea production and carry out changes in the process of tea cultivation. Picking up a couple of packets of tea at the centre would have made for a good souvenir, but we were told that the tea here is solely for research and is only distributed to employees.
Historical clubs & wildlife Jorhat has been dotted with tea gardens for decades and the Britishers who made this town their home, had no means of recreation. So, the owners of tea estates decided to form a club
close to the city. Located at a distance of 4km from Jorhat, The Gymkhana Club hosts major horse races. Another exciting place to visit is the Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary, which is about 20km from the city of Jorhat. If you’re lucky, you could catch a glimpse the Assamese macaque, jungle cats, giant squirrels, the Indian civet and the wild boar. You can visit the famed Kaziranga National Park through Jorhat, since Guwahati, the other entrance, is about 300km away. Make sure you save two days to take a tour of the park, which is about 90km from Jorhat. On your drive on NH37 from Jorhat to Kaziranga National Park, look out for the sprawling, breathtaking Kaziranga Golf Resort located at Sangsua and Gatoonga Tea Estates near Mohbondh, in west Jorhat. You will also pass Kaziranga University and dozens of tea estates that are hemmed by tabletop tea bushes. It is best to leave Jorhat by noon and reach Kaziranga National Park early in the day, check into one of the many hotels, have a quick lunch and then head to the park just in time for the second half of the day on a jeep safari that takes you into the jungle to see Assam’s most coveted creature — the great Asian one-horned rhino. One of the park’s most prized possessions, these rhinos make up 70% of the park’s animal population and are found in good numbers, grazing amidst the tall elephant grass, rugged reeds, marshes and shallow pools, along with other animals including deers and the wild water buffalo. Though the park is also home to tigers, panthers, bears and birds, you’ll find that these sightings are rare. Beware of the mud road in the park. It is tough to navigate and the park’s vehicles are in an equally deplorable condition. But, this mode of transport, even with its disadvantages, offers the added benefit of covering ground in the Kaziranga National Park, which is a World Heritage Site, in a relatively short span of time. If you are lucky, you may spot a rhino from a distance. Climb up onto the viewing towers, which offer an expansive view of animals grazing in the distance. However, my most memorable method of exploring Kaziranga was on the back of an elephant — these gentle creatures tread easily through the tall grass. The early morning elephant safari, from Bagori opens you up to the vast forest landscape of Kaziranga and guarantees sightings of the one-horned rhino within arms reach. On an elephant, you can catch a rhino staring at you, with its offspring in tow ,or one cooling off in a watering hole. After breakfast, you can laze around or check out from the hotel and return to Jorhat. But, if you drive further towards Guwahati, you might see rhinos and wild elephants that have strayed close to the highway.
So divine Back at Jorhat, you can visit St. Mary’s church at Lichubari, and further down the road you can head to Don Bosco’s I-CARD, an NGO founded by Fr. Thomas Kalapurackal SDB, director of Life Plus, for the cultural, social and economic development of the Mishing Tribe that is spread over Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. It isn’t on a map, but getting into the life and culture of this tribe is a revelation for any tourist. You will be taken on a tour of the campus and shown how the people of the Mishing community live. You can also purchase souvenirs such as locally-made bags, handkerchiefs, scarfs, Mishing tribe bamboo hats, shirts and handicraft items made by members of the tribe. The main activities of I-CARD consist of empowering the youth of the Mishing community. They are trained in various leadership skills to bring about economic and social development. If temples, tanks, museums and monuments interest you, take a one-day trip to Sivasagar, a town in Upper Assam, well known for its Ahom palaces. It is about 63km from Jorhat is worth a visit. Jorhat has several luxury and budget hotels with equally good cuisine; Solicitor Road itself has about half a dozen hotels. Commuting by bus, auto rickshaw, micro van (Tata Magic and Mahindra Maxximo) and cycle rickshaw is cheap, but if you don’t know the Assamese language and you’re not sure where you’re going, you could end up paying double the fare. Assam Trunk Road is a popular market area for shopping — don’t forget to buy Assam tea when you’re here. If you’re the adventurous type, you can visit Majuli Island. You have to head to Neemati Ghat, the river port through which ferries make their way to the river island. I visited this remote island located on the mighty Brahmaputra River and spent about six days there with a friend. The island boasts of the Satras that propagate religious ideology of great Assamese medieval Vaisnavite saints, Sankardev and Madhavdev. You would need a local contact to stay on Majuli Island, as it has no hotels or lodges. After our trip to Majuli, I took a half-day trip to the beautiful Nagaland border where I had Assam tea and cookies. After a satisfying trip, I boarded an afternoon flight back to Kolkata and then to Mumbai.
HOW TO GET THERE n By rail: Make your way to Jorhat Junction. You can also get down at
Mariani Junction, which is about 17.5 km from Jorhat railway station. All major trains from Guwahati stop at both stations.
n By road: Jorhat is connected to all major cities of Northeast India
via the Inter State Bus Terminus service.
n By air: Regular services from Kolkata and Guwahati.

After three successive session of up move, equity benchmarks traded range bound on Thursday and ended almost flat in the end. In absence of any major cue and existence of psychological hurdle in index, participants preferred to book some profit off the table and wait on sidelines for further clarity. In line with benchmark index, majority of sectoral pivot ended on flat note while the market breadth was inclined slightly on advancing side. We firmly believe that decisive breakout and sustainability above 8500 in Nifty will lead index to 8750-8800 in coming sessions. In case it fails to do so, profit taking may retrace it again to immediate support zone of 8300. So, short term traders are advised to maintain extra caution especially in the leveraged trades and suggest trailing stop losses with every rise. Also, uphold stock specific trading bias as quality counters from mid-cap and small-cap space are doing well these days.

cedes-Benz India registered a stellar 41% year-on-year growth by selling 6659 units in the Jan - June 2015 period. for 2015, it said. As of June 26, the area sown under kharif crops was 23% larger than the year-ago period. "Nevertheless, only around onefourth of the total area covered under kharif planting in 2014 was sown by the end of June 2015. Accordingly, rainfall dynamics in the remainder of the monsoon season would continue to impact the sowing pattern and eventual crop yields," said Aditi Nayar, Senior Economist at ICRA Ltd. Taking into account the drag related to the weak rabi harvest in the first quarter of 2015-16, as well as lingering uncertainty regarding the ultimate turnout of the kharif harvest, ICRA expects the agricultural sector to record a marginal growth in 2015-16. An improvement in rural sentiments and consumption activity unlikely to set in until second half of 2015-16. However, the recent improvement in growth recorded by the Index of Industrial Production,
core sector industries, and various services sector indicators related to air traffic and cargo handled at ports are encouraging, said the ratings firm. "Such factors would support a mild uptick in Indian GDP growth to 7.4-7.6% in 2015-16 from 7.3% in 2014-15," it said. It said would keep the food inflation in check in the near term with modest rise in support prices for various crops and a favourable base effect in some month. "ICRA expects CPI inflation to print in a range of 4-6% over the remainder of 2015, and average CPI inflation to decline below 5.5% in 2015 from 6.6% in 2014, assuming that crude oil prices remain relatively stable around current levels." It also said that the ongoing Greece crisis and rate hikes by the US Federal Reserve may impact foreign exchange rates, however, the Indian rupee may only have limited vulnerability within the set of emerging market currencies.

Com Min Calls Meeting With Banks On July 10 On FDI In E-Comm By A Business Reporter
T
he Commerce and Industry Ministry has called a meeting of public sector banks on July 10 to discuss issues related with ecommerce retailing. The issues which would come up for discussions include payment mechanisms of the e-commerce companies and the role of banks, sources said. The meeting would be chaired by Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The same day she would also meet with other stakeholders including industry representatives on foreign direct investment (FDI) in e-commerce retailing. Representatives of companies such as Flipkart, Amazon and Snapdeal are expected to participate in the meeting. Last month, the minister had discussed the matter with all stakeholders. She had said the meeting was to understand the broader context of e-commerce and whether FDI in the sector is affecting the level-playing field of the brick and mortar stores. At present, 100% foreign direct investment is allowed only in business-to-business (B2B) ecommerce and not in the retail segment. Global retail giants, including Amazon, and the domestic industry want the government to relax the foreign investment norms in the e-commerce space.

Everything that happens may not even be directly linked to the story –like Chinmay’s encounter with a fisherman (Umesh Jagtap), but it matters. Avinash Arun said in an interview that the story of Killa is partly autobiographical, and came from his own problems in dealing with his father’s transferable job. The locations are picturesque, the children utterly charming and the story so touchingly real that it stays in the mind long after the film is over. What also remains is the echo of the applause that greeted the film at the end. And the audience was not made up of festival regulars, which is what builds some hope for non-commercial cinema. Next stop, Masaan...
bhishek Bachchan feels that nobody can match steps with Rishi Kapoor and it is his dream to dance with the veteran actor. "It was a dream of mine to dance with him (Rishi Kapoor). I think nobody can perform a song like Chintu uncle. We were shooting for ''Delhi 6''. "I begged Rakeysh Ompraskash Mehra (director) to give me a song with him. He gave us a beautiful song 'Rehna Tu' but that was in background. So, I could not dance with him," Abhishek told reporters here at the trailer launch of "All Is Well". Abhishek said he had a great time working with Rishi in the film.
"I had one condition with Umesh Shukla (director of 'All Is Well') that I want at least two songs with him (Rishi Kapoor) and I am thankful that we got lucky as we got to perform with him whom we consider the best. He is still the best. We had a great time," he said. Recalling his visits to the film sets of his father as a kid, Abhishek said he used to interact most with Rishi. "Whenever I used to be on sets of my father's films as a child I used to interact a lot with him (Rishi Kapoor). After my father I am a big fan of him. I used to love being with him. He used to play with us when we were kids," Abhishek said.
Difficult for outsiders to have choice: Aditi Rao Hydari
A
ctress Aditi Rao Hydari says she wants to collaborate with good directors as being an outsider she does not have the privilege to get roles written for her. "I want to work with good people and good directors. I don't have the privilege of choice to say 'I want to work with you' and the person will say, 'Yes, come on, I will write a film for you.' It doesn't happen for people like me who come from the outside," she said. Hydari made her Hindi film debut in a supporting role in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's "Delhi-6" in 2009, and feels "lucky" that she has been a part of good films. "I have been lucky that good people have chosen me to be a part of their films and I am really grateful. This fills me with a sense of positivity and there is so much to look forward to." The actress, who has struck a balance between glamorous roles in movies like "London Paris New York", "Boss" and performance-driven characters in "Yeh Saali Zindagi" and "Rockstar", said she does not want to get pigeon-holed in a particular image. "I want to do different things, I don't want to be stuck in the 'sweet girl' box. I don't want to be stuck in the 'oh she is so glamorous' box'. I want to be brought into a film for more than that. I hope I bring more to the table than just a face and a fit body. "But it is not a conscious decision. I don't have a method, I don't overthink things. Even on set I switch-on and switch-off. I could be bawling and the next minute I could be jumping. I work like that, I am a five-year-old kid in my head." The actress said she was fortunate to do films which were more than just "glamorous." "Even ''London Paris New York'' and ''Murder 3'' were films which demanded a lot of work in terms of acting. There was good solid work for me. They weren't just glamorous roles. And I believe there is nothing wrong with being glamorous, nothing wrong with being sexy or feminine." Hydari will be next seen in "Jolly LLB" director Subhash Kapoor's upcoming comedy film "Guddu Rangeela", opposite Arshad Warsi and "Kai Po Che" actor Amit Sadh. The film will release today.

BIRTHDAY FOREC AST: Financial matters will come under control. Work conditions will continue to be favorable. You will come across good work offers or receive material benefits. Be quick in taking a decision, for you can strike a good deal. Those looking for a new house will approve a plot of land. They may decide to invest in it and later construct their house. The married will enjoy conjugal bliss. Health needs attention. Those suffering from chronic cough or cold may need medical attention. BABIES BORN TODAY: Healthy, long-lived, with well-proportioned body, charming and graceful appearance. Will be refined, soft spoken and respectful. Will be responsible and settle down in a career early in life. Success and happiness is assured. ARIES (March 21 - April 20): An agreement or contract may require a few changes. You need to clarify any fears or doubts that you have about a new business association that you are about to finalize. It seems someone jealous of your success will try to stall your project. Do not listen to unwarranted advice and suggestions.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 20): Concentrate on your current project or job, which is giving you a steady income. New deals look tempting but could well turn out to be expensive delusions. Stick to what you know best. Trying to branch out or diversifying your business will not be a good idea in the long run. All plans for a good time with your mate can get upset because of things beyond your control. LEO (July 22 - August 21): You may need to devote more time to certain property issues and legalities that need sorting out. An old dispute could get settled in your favor. It is best and in the interest of all concerned to accept whatever the outcome maybe rather than dispute or seek recourse. A person you admire secretly is getting drawn to you. You have an exciting relationship in the making. Watch and wait.
TAURUS (April 21 - May 20): Use money wisely as there are extra demands. You need to adjust your budget. Ask for help if you need. You could miss out on an important tip for investment or work because of a communication problem. Be discreet when dealing with people as there could be misunderstanding. Work hard without seeking immediate rewards. You will soon receive news of your promotion and increase in salary and other benefits. Do not let outsiders interfere in your love life. Employed can look forward to news of an increment or promotion. A journey for work or religious function is likely. Someone may go out of the way to flirt outrageously with you. Do not think that your talents have been recognized. Contrarily you may be tricked or taken advantage of.
SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21): Extra caution is needed especially if your work is of the speculative kind. Your recent success makes you complacent; you may be unaware that some forces are working against you. A tempting job offer at this juncture could lead to an uncertain future. A flirtation or attraction to a colleague or someone you know is likely and should be handled tactfully. You will not do anything, which can be termed unethical or immoral whether in love or otherwise.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 December 20): Do not undertake any assignment that requires urgent attention and that has certain past liabilities. Perhaps it has something to do with a labor problem, which you will not be able to resolve without spending a large amount of money and also wasting a lot of your precious time. It would be better to restrict your activities to routine work.
CAPRICORN (December 21 January 19): You will be toying with new ideas to incorporate into your work. Go slow with new process and without disturbing your regular schedule. Do not push yourself too much if things do not go your way today. People who are normally quite efficient will also get on your nerves. Your being aloof or withdrawn will not solve personal problems. You need to be forthright and let the other person know what upsets you.
AQUARIUS (January 20 - February 18): You are now much closer to achieving goals in your career or profession. Meetings and new business proposals scheduled for today will yield good results. Indian hockey eves beat Italy 5-4 via shootouts; keep Olympic dreams alive
29 Indian men eager to tame attacking Belgians in semifinal clash
A
ntwerp: India kept their Olympic qualification dreams alive by beating lower-ranked Italy in the shoot-out in a classification match of the women's Hockey World League Semifinals at the KHC Dragons Stadium. The Indian hockey eves, ranked 13 in the world, prevailed 5-4 over world rank 16 Italy in the shoot-out of the first play-off match for the fifth to eighth positions, after both the teams were locked at 1-1 at the end of the regulation 60 minutes. India failed to capitalise on numerous opportunities during the regulation time. The ensuing shoot-out also failed to break the deadlock as both the teams scored four times each from their five shots and the contest went to suddendeath. Taking the first try in sudden-death, Rani Rampal shot on target before goalkeeper Savita brought off a fine save against Giuliana Ruggieri to spark celebrations in the Indian camp. Rani Rampal had earlier scored the equaliser for India in the 33rd minute after Italy opened the scoring against the run of play in the ninth minute of the contest. In the shoot-out, experienced striker Vandana Katariya muffed her attempt while Navjot Kaur, Anuradha Thokchom, Rani Rampal and Deepika scored for India. For Italy, Valentina Braconi, Marcela Casale, Guiliana Ruggieri and Chiara Tiddi shot on target but Dalila Mirabella was denied by the Indian custodian. The victory takes India into the play-off for the fifth and sixth spot on Saturday, where they will face the winner of the another classification contest between hosts Belgium and Japan.

imbledon: When a totally off-balance Andy Murray fashioned the most improbable lob winner to break Robin Haase in the first set on Thursday the Dutchman must have known that his 2015 Wimbledon journey was going to end sooner rather than later. The delectable lob that bounced off the Scot's racket gave him a 4-1 advantage and effectively broke Haase's spirit as the 2013 champion sprinkled his opponent's half of the court with 25 glorious winners to sprint to a 6-1 6-1 6-4 second-round win. Antwerp (Belgium): India will face one of their toughest tests in defence when they square off against the marauding Belgians in what promises to be a robust semifinal clash of the FIH Hockey World League Semifinals here today. The encounter will test the ability of India's defence to guard against the Belgian strikers, who have tasted enormous success in the past couple of years to boost their world ranking to No. 4 -- the highest in their hockey history. Ranked No. 9 in the world, India faces a formidable side that has enjoyed a slight edge in their recent encounters since the 2011 Champions Challenge final in Johannesburg. The Belgian players have, in fact, made giant strides in international hockey. Starting with the victory in the Champions Challenge that earned Belgium their maiden entry in the elite Champions Trophy, the Red Lions have emerged victorious in their fixtures against India in the 2012 Olympic Games and the 2014 World Cup. India have managed to overcome the Belgian challenge in successive Champions Trophy encounters in Melbourne and Bhubaneswar. "Playing Belgium suits our game. Belgium play a structured game and we're ready for this contest," said India coach Paul van Ass, bracing to take on the higher-ranked Belgium. Van Ass said his team usually found Asian teams to be tougher rivals. It was evident yesterday when India were made to work hard for the 3-2 victory by the nippy Malaysian rivals. It was only two late penalty corner goals from youngster Jasjit Singh that turned the tide in India's favour in the contest played in soaring heat.

Vijender meets Haryana CM C
handigarh: Drawing flak from some quarters for turning professional, Olympic bronze-medallist boxer Vijender Singh met Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar here today. However, there was no official word on what transpired in the meeting which lasted for about 30 minutes at the CM's official residence here. The ace boxer, who also holds the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in Haryana, came in his Sports Utility Vehicle and avoided the media. However, it is understood that the CM had asked the boxer to follow the rules for turning professional from amateur. Recently, Haryana police had warned of taking action against Vijender if he fails to seek permission from the state government for turning professional. Vijender, the country's most celebrated boxer, had bid adieu to his amateur career by turning professional, ruling himself out of next year's Olympics. The first Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal -- the 29-year-old signed a multiyear agreement with Queensberry Promotions through IOS Sports and Entertainment. Vijender was appointed as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) by the previous Bhupinder Singh Hooda government in Haryana for his outstanding record in boxing at national and international level. However, Vijender was currently on probation and

Emerging out of the meeting which lasted for about 10 minutes, Vijender described the matter discussed with the DGP as "confidential." He, however, asserted that he was following all the rules and regulations. "I have not broken any rule or regulation," he said. It is understood that the boxer sought "exemption" while the DGP said that the matter is administrative in nature and police will hand over the communication given by the boxer to the state government for further necessary action.
ew Delhi: Two-time Olympic-medallist Sushil Kumar has opted out of the World Championships after sustaining a shoulder injury, thereby taking the sheen out of the upcoming selection trials, slated for July 6-7 here. The World championships, scheduled to be held in Las Vegas from September 7-12, will also be the first qualification tournament for the 2016 Rio Olympics. "Yes, I have sustained an injury to my right shoulder while practising. So I would not be able to take part in the upcoming selection trials. So, automatically that rules me out of the first qualifying event for next year's Rio Olympic Games," Sushil told PTI. "I have been advised by the doctors to take rest. At the moment, I don't know exactly how long my injury will take to heal completely, but I am taking good care," he added. Sushil's injury has ended what could have been a enthralling battle between the veteran wrestler and the young Narsingh Pancham Yadav in the selection trials slated for July 6-7 for a place in the World Championships. After the World Championships, there are six more qualification tournaments, all of which are scheduled to be held next year, starting from March 2016. Kanitkar retires from cricket, eyes coaching job N
ew Delhi: Former India player Hrishikesh Kanitkar has finally called time on his cricket career to concentrate on coaching assignments in the near future. The 40-year-old lefthanded batsman and a part time off-spinner conveyed his decision to BCCI yesterday. Kanitkar, who represented India in two Tests and 34 ODIs in his three-year-long international career, will always be remembered for his match-winning boundary against Saqlain Mushtaq in the side's memorable win over Pakistan at Dhaka in January 1998. Finishing his career with Rajasthan -- he last represented the state in December 2013 -- the Pune-born player said that the fielding drills were the prime reason for his decision to call it quits. "The passion for batting was still there but the motivation to be on the ground fielding for long stretches of time, even in a match, didn't
really exist," Kanitkar was quoted as saying by 'ESPNcricinfo'. "I didn't want fielding to be a formality. If I am not able to give as much as a youngster is giving in the field, then I shouldn't be pushing myself for a place in
a side, so I took the call." Despite losing his India berth in 2000, Kanitkar emerged as a doyen of domestic cricket. He ended his career as one of only three batsmen to have scored 8000-plus runs in the Ranji Trophy. His 28 Ranji cen-
turies are also joint thirdhighest in the tournament's history. He is also the only captain in the tournament's history to lift the Elite and Plate league titles. Kanitkar led Rajasthan, the third domestic side he played for after his home team Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, to successive Ranji titles in 2010-11 and 2011-12. Eyeing a coach's role, Kanitkar has conducted a camp of the BCCI's east zone regional camp for under-19 cricketers. "Coaching is something I am very keen on. If I get an opportunity to work with teams, it would be a great learning experience," he said. "I will also be keen to work as a cricket analyst in the media. These are the two things are on my agenda. It's like after being a doctor for twenty years, you want to be a consultant after that. You can't just turn the back on something that you have loved all your life."
events next year before the Rio Olympics and I have been working hard for it," insisted the wrestler from Haryana. Sushil, who had created history in 2010 by becoming the first Indian to win a gold at the World Championships in Moscow, had been preparing
hard for the first qualifying event for the Olympics. Sushil is the lone Indian to have won two individual medals in the Olympics. He had bagged a bronze in 2008 Beijing Olympics and then followed it up with a silver medal finish at London Games in 2012 in the 66kg Freestyle. But he was forced to move up to 74kg division after the world body, FILA rejigged the weight categories. Since climbing up the weight category, Sushil has competed only twice but on both occasions, he made the nine-kilogram addition look like a cake-walk. After a successful campaign in London Olympics, he took a long sabbatical. Having made a comeback in May last year, he competed in his new category at the Senior International wrestling tournament in Italy and finished with a silver medal. He bettered his performance in the next tournament at Glasgow Commonwealth Games in July 2014, winning the yellow metal. But he chose not to participate in any other competition after that and instead started preparing for the 2015 World Championships. His absence from the mat for almost a year now has seen Narsingh regularly represent India in 74kg Freestyle. In the last one year, Narsingh has won quite a few medals for the country in various competitions and has been rated highly by all coaches.

dmonton (Canada): A late own-goal by England defender Laura Bassett put defending champions Japan into the final of the Women's World Cup with a 2-1 win. Japan next play the twotime winners United States in the final at Vancouver next Sunday after the Americans beat Germany 2-0 in a Tuesday semi-final at Montreal. Japan and England looked to be heading for extra time deadlocked at 1-1 yesterday after captain Aya Miyama scored a penalty on 33 minutes at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium only for Fara Williams to level for England five minutes before the break, also from a penalty kick. But two minutes into injury time, Bassett sent the ball into her own net to end her team's dream run to their first World Cup semi-final. Bassett was in tears after the final whistle and had to be consoled by England coach Mark Sampson as she walked off the field, the Lionesses stunned, shocked and crying at the heartbreaking final turn. "It's OK to cry. They left everything on the field," Sampson said. Sampson was especially proud of Bassett, whose heroics helped England to the brink of the championship match. "Laura Bassett has epitomised this England team this tournament," he said. "She has been courageous, strong... She kept this team together. She didn't deserve that. She'll be remembered as a hero." England were the only team to defeat Japan at Germany 2011, winning 2-0 in the group stage during the Nadeshiko's charge to their maiden world crown. And the Lionesses had come out roaring with Jodie Taylor having the first shot at goal after just one minute when she fired from 25 yards

but sent the ball just wide of Ayumi Kaihori in the Japanese goal. The Asian champions dominated possession for the first half hour and finally got the breakthrough on a penalty, awarded when Claire Rafferty brought down Saori Ariyoshi, who was charging towards goal. Miyama stepped up and, taking her time with a stuttering run, slotted the penalty in as Karen Bardsley dived the wrong way in the England goal. But eight minutes later, England were back on level terms after captain Steph
Zico to arrive in Goa on Monday
anaji: FC Goa's chief coach Zic o will arrive in the state on July 6 to take stock of all new signings before deciding on the players to be picked from the domestic draft for ISL 2. Zico, who has personally selected each of the seven international signings so far, is keen to devise a strategy for the second edition of the Indian Super League's domestic draft on
July 10 in Mumbai. FC Goa have former Brazilian captain Lucio as their marquee player, while other experienced Brazilians like Victor Simoes, Reinaldo and Elinton Andrade have all been signed up. France's Gregory Arnolin and Portuguese player Bruno Pinheiro have been retained, while Jorfe Gonzalez has switched sides to Goa from Atletico de Kolkata. FC Goa's domestic signings include Romeo Fernandes, Mandar Rao Desai, Laxmikant Kattimani, Narayan Das, Debabrata Roy, Bikramjit Singh, Pronay Halder, CS Sabeeth, Denson Devadas, Joaquim Abranches and Raju Gaikwad.
Houghton was deemed to have been fouled in the box by Japan forward Yuki Ogimi. Williams rifled the penalty into goal past Kaihori to equalise for the sixth-ranked English. Forward Ellen White was substituted in on the hour mark and lifted the England attack. Two minutes later, Toni Duggan rattled the crossbar afrom 22 yards, and seconds later a diving Kaihori did well to punch clear White's curling goalward shot. Norio Sasakai brought on Mana Iwabuchi 20 minutes from time and the Bayern
Munich forward proved a real danger straight away for England. She whipped in a cross after 77 minuets but Mizuho Sakaguchi's header went wide. But as Japan pushed forward with the clock ticking, there was heartbreak for England as Bassett sent the ball over the head of Bardsley and into the net. Sunday's championship match will be a rematch of the 2011 final in Frankfurt, which Japan won 3-1 on penalites after the game finished 2-2 following extra-time. The Americans went on to take Olympic gold in 2012 by beating Japan 2-1 in the final. England now prepare to meet former two-time winners Germany in Saturday's thirdplace playoff match in Edmonton.

Copa final ‘not war’says Mascherano should not poison what is expected to be a highly charged sporting encounter. "I hope that people can understand that football is a sport, not war," Mascherano said. "The past is the past. We must not put sport in the middle of politics. Chile and Argentina are brother countries, we have to show mutual respect," the defensive midfielder added. "If we stoop to aggression and violence, we lose that message of respect. Sport is about trying to be healthy and having fun, not a war." Mascherano's words were echoed by Chile defender Eugenio Mena. "Everyone's going to be watching this final so it's important that

antiago: Argentina star Javier Mascherano called for calm yesterday as the countdown to this weekend's Copa America final against fierce rivals Chile got under way. Two teams desperate to succeed will collide in Santiago on Saturday with hosts Chile aiming to end nearly a century of failure by winning a major tournament for the first time in front of an expectant home crowd. Argentina meanwhile are burning with desire to win a first title in 22 years, determined that one of the most talented generations of players the country has ever produced does not suffer another disappointment. The high stakes will carry an additional edge thanks to the historical rivalry between the neighboring nations, who in the past have been at loggerheads over various territorial and diplomatic disputes. But Mascherano was adamant that politics
the two teams show respect," Mena said. Argentina set the stage for Saturday's showpiece with a scintillating display to destroy Paraguay 6-1 in Tuesday's semi-final, with skipper Lionel Messi producing a virtuoso individual performance. Chile defender Jose Rojas said his team-mates would need to raise their performance against Argentina. "They are one of the best teams in the world, there is no doubt about that," Rojas said. "But being the favourites doesn't guarantee anything. We are playing at home, with our people behind us, and we have something to say." Rojas also urged Chile to give their all against the Argentines. "You have to throw all the meat on the grill," Rojas said. "Argentina is strong but nothing is impossible. We have hunger and desire to achieve something important for our country."
Cech slams Chelsea fans who sent him death threats
L
ondon: Petr Cech has blasted Chelsea supporters who have threatened his life insisting, “They are not true fans.” The keeper completed a £10million switch to Arsenal this week and promptly faced abuse from Blues fans on social media. He has been branded a 'traitor' and a 'snake' while some supporters have even posted death threats. But Cech has hit back at those fans, saying, “The true fans have sent me messages that are pleasing and positive.
True fans will appreciate what I've done and the legacy I've left. There are some people who have left me negative
messages, but they aren't true Chelsea fans.” Meanwhile, Cech insists his relationship with Jose Mourinho isn't broken despite his shock move. The Chelsea manager was desperate to keep Cech, who will move closer to the Arsenal's London Colney HQ, and was very reluctant to let him join his side's rivals. But Cech says his bond with Mourinho remains strong: 'Jose is one of the best managers in the world, our relationship hasn't changed although he went with
Thibaut Courtois last season. “But we respect each other. He made his decision and I made mine. We had a good chat - I know he wanted me to stay but that's the way it goes.”The new Arsenal keeper explained his decision to join the north London club came down to the need for firstteam football. “I realised last season how much I love big part of a team week in week out,” he said. “This is not the time for me to be sitting on the bench. It's a purely footballing reason. Roman had the very last word in the end.”

W
hite Sulphur Springs (US): Tiger Woods expects some improvements, however slight, in his game when the PGA Greenbrier Classic begins today even as he was romantically linked to a rival's exwife. The 39-year-old 14-time major champion, in the midst of the worst season of his career, missed the cut at last month's US Open at Chambers Bay with rounds of 80 and 76, the worst 36-hole effort of his career. "I've made a little bit of progress. Obviously, that's not saying much," Woods said. "I'm looking forward to getting out there and competing." Woods, the former world number one who has slumped to 220th in the rankings, makes his only tuneup for the British Open in two weeks at St. Andrews against a field whose only top-10 rival is third-ranked Bubba Watson, the two-time Masters champion coming off a PGA victory last week. Woods, who shared 17th at the Masters in his only decent showing this year, was again the subject of tabloid reports yesterday as the National Enquirer stated Woods and US ski star Lindsey Vonn split up in May after two years together because she caught Woods cheating on her with Amanda Boyd, a 27-
US seeks extradition of 7 FIFA officials in Switzerland
Geneva: The United States has demanded the extradition of seven FIFA officials detained in May setting off what could become a prolonged legal battle over the handling of the major corruption case. Swiss authorities said today that the US embassy in Bern had sent an extradition request the day before. The seven were detained in a dawn raid on a Zurich hotel on May 27 as a FIFA congress was about to start. FIFA leader Sepp Blatter was reelected to a new term at the congress but amid a storm of controversy over parallel US and Swiss investigations, he announced four days later that he would stand down. Blatter has not been accused by either inquiry and again strongly denied involvement in corruption in a German media interview released Wednesday. The US legal authorities had until July 3 to make their request and a Swiss federal justice office statement said the embassy action was "within the timeframe set down in the bilateral extradition treaty" between the two countries. The seven officials -- all from South and North America -- have all indicated they will fight extradition.

Mark Steinberg, the agent for Woods, told Fox News in an e-mail the report linking Woods to Boyd was "Absolutely 100 percent false," and a "Complete lie and fabrication," he told the Golf Channel the story was "categorically false" and a "ridiculous rumor." Woods had a secret sex life with more than a dozen mis-
tresses revealed in 2009, a scandal that led to his divorce from Elin Nordegren in 2010. He has not won a major title since the scandal erupted, ruining his goodguy clean cut image and as a result saw his endorsement deals suffer a major blow. Stoke City agree £12m fee with Inter for Xherdan Shaqiri
L
ondon: Stoke City are pessimistic about their chances of pulling off a clubrecord £12m deal for Internazionale’s Xherdan Shaqiri. The Premier League club have agreed a fee with Inter but harbour doubts that the 23-year-old Swiss international can be persuaded to swap San Siro for the Britannia Stadium. Stoke wanted to establish first of all whether they were in a position to be able to afford Shaqiri, who only joined the Serie A club from Bayern Munich in January. Yet nailing down that part of the deal appears to be the easy bit. Stoke realise that trying to convince Shaqiri to leave behind one of the most distinguished clubs in the world may prove challenging.
The deal is not dead and it is worth remembering that Stoke signed Bojan from Barcelona last summer. Yet acquiring Shaqiri, who played 15 league games for Inter in the second half of last season, to follow in the Spaniard’s footsteps will be easier said than done. One player certain to leave Stoke this summer is Asmir Begovic, with Chelsea expected to return with an improved £8m bid for the 28-year-old goalkeeper, who is seen as a replacement for Petr Cech. Stoke rejected a £6m offer for Begovic but are resigned to the fact that the Bosnian will leave and are keen to try to take a Chelsea player on loan as part of the transfer. Victor Moses spent last season on loan at Stoke but the indications are that he wants to keep his options open this term. Ruben Loftus-Cheek is another possibility but the word at Chelsea is that Mourinho will not consider allowing the 19year-old midfielder to go out on loan. Patrick Bamford, prolific in the Championship with Middlesbrough last season, could also come into the equation.
his ongoing struggles where even mediocrity would be an improvement. "I know what I'm doing out here," Woods said. "I know what it feels like. I know where my game is and what progress I have or haven't made. That's what I'm concerned about." Woods has had to make adjustments on his swing over the years to ease the load on his body, which has suffered from numerous knee, leg and back injuries over the years as he smashed tee shots well beyond rivals in younger days. Woods missed the cut in 2012 after going 71-69 for 36 holes the last time he played the Greenbrier, where scores typically finish well below par. The greens are a little faster than the last time I played," Woods said. "I expect the scores to be very low. We're going to have to go low. We're going to have to make a bunch of birdies, keep the pedal down, be aggressive." Woods said he took a vacation with his children in the Bahamas after missing the cut at the US Open. "I know it's hard to believe I wasn't that far (from playing well) at the Open, but I really wasn't," Woods said.
