Bal Gopal Sarvajanik Ganesh Ustav Mandal, Kalachowki

Azad Shrivastav | ADC

The Bal Gopal Sarvajanik Ganesh Ustav Mandal, near Bldg 16 in Kalachowki, has been celebrating the festival for 56 years. The mandal’s theme highlights the two warriors of the state – Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Lokmanya Tilak – and their contribution during the struggle for Maharashtra.

Since 56 years, our mandal has followed the festival in a cultural manner. All these years, the idol of Ganesha has been the same. Our aim is to worship Ganesha in the traditional way and not for publicity. — Santosh Amdoskar, President

Ganesh festival

IN INDIA West Bengal

G

anesh Chaturthi is celebrated with religious fervour across West Bengal. Devotees offer prayers in the morning to Ganesha, the symbol of wisdom and remover of obstacles. The city wears a festive look with colourful pandals. Devotional and Hindi and Bengali film songs are played at almost all the pandals with kids dancing to the tunes. The elephant god's popularity has travelled all the way to Kolkata from Maharashtra. “The festival is now popular in West Bengal due to migration of people and also due to its portrayal in movies,” says Avik Chatterjee, one of the puja organisers in Dumdum. In Burrabazar alone, more than 50 mandaps have come up, each with a budget of Rs 30 to 40 lakh. On the first day of the 10day puja, devotees visit the pandals in hordes. On the 11th day, devotees sing and dance before immersing the idols.

AROUND THE WORLD Oman

T

he Kannada community in Oman has been celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi since the last 30 years. The invitations this year were designed to show 30 different images of Ganesha on the cover.

The three-day festival is interspersed with various devotional rituals like 'aarthi', 'gana homa', 'maha pooja', 'ranga Pooja', 'pushparchan'. Devotees seek the blessings of Ganesha and pay homage to the god while making offerings such as 108 coconuts, modaks, laddu, kodu bale, chakkuli, fruits and flowers.

PREVENTION IS BETTER: Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal at Chakala, Andheri (E) (ward No 76) has showcased a scene showcasing the efforts made by the BMC to prevent Malaria and Dengue. A video clip about steps to be taken to prevent water-borne diseases is being screened. The mandal has been celebrating Ganeshotsav under the guidance of Shiv Sena corporator Smita Subhash Sawant.

Rao's Bal Ganesh

A

n idol of 'Bal Ganesh', four inches tall, has been brought to Atul Rao's reisdence at Girgaum Chowpatty every year for more than 80 years. The Rao family belongs to the Pathare Prabhu community, the oldest community in the island city of Mumbai. The founder, B R Rao, started bringing a Ganesh idol home way back in 1930. The decoration around the idol is traditional and unique in many ways. The three-tier traditional arrangements comprises a wooden chaurang of Sheesham wood. The ornaments worn by the idol are made of pure gold. The silver items in miniature form consist of the modak, pan supari, various fruits, dry fruits, animals and birds, which are displayed at every level. Old porcelain articles of cows, lions, elephants and swans can be seen in pairs, an ancient treasure of the

Raos. The extravagent arrangements of fresh flowers of many varieties like gladiol, rose, tulips, dahalia, etc is replaced

every alternate day. The colourful hand-made rangoli prepared from sea salt is a rare sight. Prasad Panvalkar, son-in-

law of B R Rao, and his son Akshay P Panvalkar are actively involved in celebrating Ganesh festival for many years.

Kamathipura to Washington

Vishwanath Salian | ADC

NINETEEN-year-old Sheetal Jain was born to a sex worker in Kamathipura. She fought all odds to reach a Music School in Washington DC, USA. Accepting the fact that she was born to a sex worker, she refused to accept that her fate would be the same, despite the world's persistent declaration. 'No one's daughter' was the tag she accepted boldly, suffering violence, discrimination and social injustice; yet she persevered in her dream.

Sheetal Jain

In her own words: “I am in Std X and I love to dance and play drums. Sounds like a normal teenager’s life? Yes, but I grew up in Kamathipura. I am the daughter of a commercial sex worker and I have never met my father. I’m still in Std X. I faced a lot of violence and discrimination, but I have big dreams! I want to go to a music school in the US and get a drumming diploma so I can start music classes in red-light areas.”

ONE UMBRELLA, MANY DEVOTEES TAKE SHELTER UNDER IT: On the blustery 7th day of Ganpati immersions in the city, a group of devotees attempt to protect themselves from the heavy rainfall under a solitary umbrella, after breaking away from the group who braved the elements to proceed with the ‘visarjan’ at Girgaum, Chowpatty.

Sheetal was found by the NGO Kranti, which works with kids of commercial sex workers. They have helped her apply for a year-long diploma in the US Drum School, Washington DC. She was selected and is about to embark on the journey of a lifetime on September 16. Harish Iyer, an equal rights activist who is closely associated with

Kranti, has taken up the cause to raise awareness for Sheetal and help fund her dream. Kranti’s co-founder, Robin Chaurasi, said, “Sheetal’s been at Kranti for 2 years, and between 17 and 19 years of age, she’s grown from a timid, shy girl with low selfesteem to a confident, courageous young woman"

Guinness record with sabudana rangolis

THE 7.5x8.5 feet Ganesha rangoli made with 45kgs of colourful sabudana with more than 250 shades is on display from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. till Sunday, September 14 at Mulund opposite Vardhaman Nagar. Mohankumar Dodecha, the creative mind behind it has received a Guinness World Record for rangolis of Lord Ganesha and

he has been making rangolis since he was in Std X. Mohankumar Dodecha, said, “This rangoli was completed in a month. In a school competition, I made Ganesha rangolis of moong and other pulses and then later started making from sabudana.” About his inspiration, Dodecha, said, “I have great reverence for

many deities each year, but I'm deeply motivated by the legendary artist S.M. Pandit and used to follow him. I have created different Ganesh rangolis from Lalbaugcha Raja Ganpati to Titwala Ganpati, I have created them all with sabudana. It gives me immense pleasure and pride to make rangolis of the Lord for the past 54 years.”

With less than two weeks left for her to leave on her adventure abroad, Kranti is crowd-sourcing to fund Sheetal's journey and stay in USA. Visit the Kranti website if you want to donate.

AN Uttar Pradesh SP leader says rapes cannot be stopped – boys will be boys. Another leader from the same state says there is no need to make so much fuss about a rape. He was referring to the increasing number of rape cases across the country. The rich and the poor do it, the high and low in society do it. Politicians, doctors, lawyers, sportsmen, businessmen and others belong to various professions do it. And judges also do it! People respect judges. The illiterate and the poor as well as the educated and the rich hold them in high esteem. They accept that the judges have the final say in everything. A Varanasi story: A couple of months ago, a girl eloped with a boy. She was a minor. The police recorded her statement. Later, on camera, her statement was to be recorded before an additional chief magistrate. Instead of recording her statement, he is alleged to have sexually molested her in the comfort and security of his chamber. The incident attracted severe criticism of the lawyers of the town. PM Shinzo Abe with wife Akie.

His wife, Akie Abe, told The Associated Press today that her husband gives her time for a wide range of activities, from raising organic rice to appearing in a gay pride parade. Despite her husband's conservative image, she says he does chores when he can.

JAPAN'S first lady says she has such a busy schedule that sometimes it's up to the prime minister to do the dishes or take out the garbage. It's the kind of flexibility that she says is needed for the advancement of women in Japan. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is pushing companies and the government to hire and promote more women. He appointed five women to his 18-member Cabinet yesterday.

ednesday's arrests of two shooters from Chhota Shakeel gang has sent shockwaves not only in the Chhota Rajan gang but also at Sahayadri Krida Mandal (SKM) in Tilak Nagar's area of Chembur. The reason for this, said a highly placed source in the city's crime branch, is that Shakeel's two shooters had arrived in city to eliminate two close aides of Rajan – gangster D.K. Rao and another person who is a top SKM functionary. From around three decades, the mandal is infamous for being funded by the elusive Rajan, through his relatives, said police adding that several gangsters from Rajan gang still visit the mandal every year. "Acting on a tip-off, a trap was laid and accused Mohammed Mahir Siddhique (30) and Akhtar Jamal Khan (35) were arrested from near Noor Hotel in Dharavi area, Central Mumbai," said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sadanand Date. While talking with the ADC, sleuths from the anti-extortion cell (ARC) of crime branch, requesting annonymity, were quite firm to reveal gangster Rao's name, being one among the two targets. How-

Chhota Shakeel ever, despite repeatedly being asked about the second target, neither ARC nor the top brass of crime branch, was willing to reveal any information. Revealing the name of second target, said Vinayak Vast, senior inspector of ARC, would create unnecessary panic among the people during Ganpati festival. However, Vast emphasised that “Such targets, who are also affiliated with Rajan gang by some or the other means, are on police's radar.”

The arrests Thwarting the occurence of gang war in the city, sleuths from ARC

and Criminal Intelligence Unit (CIU) in a joint operation arrested Siddhique and Khan. Shakeel planned to kill Rao in the city's sessions court premises, when he was supposed to be brought for a court hearing from Taloja jail in neighbouring Navi Mumbai city. After arresting the duo, police recovered a sophisticated 0.32 bore revolver, four live cartridges and other incriminating articles. Siddhique who has been arrested, was acquitted earlier, in a fake passport case registered against him by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad. Siddhique was released from jail in February this year, after which he arrived in Mumbai. Khan has criminal cases registered against him in the city, said police adding that both the arrested gangsters were in direct touch with Shakeel, who is a close associate of globally declared terrorist Dawood Ibrahim. Meanwhile, the duo has been remanded in police police custody till September 9. neel.shah@afternoondc.in

Kidnapped and abandoned, now found GRP have tracked down a little girl who was kidnapped ten days ago By Vishnudas Sheshrao

he Government Railway Police (GRP) at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) yesterday rescued a little girl who was kidnapped in CST and abandoned in Mumbra. She has been put up at the Children's Home in Dongri and will soon be re-united with her parents from West Bengal who are on their way to Mumbai. Less than two weeks ago, three-year-old Kiran, along with her sibling and mother Lucky Tarokumar De (30), residents of Hugli district of West Bengal, wanted to visit her paternal grandparents' home in Lucknow. But since her tickets were not confirmed, Lucky was afraid to board the train from West Bengal. A fellow passenger, Firoz Miyan (39), who Lucky was acquainted with, advised her to follow him to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) in Mumbai and then catch the Pushpak Express train to Lucknow. Lucky, an uneducated

Kiran with a GRP officer. woman, decided to follow Miyan. On the way, Miyan and Lucky got into an argument and when they reached Mumbai, he picked up Kiran and disappeared into the crowd at CST. This happened on August 24. After futile attempts at finding them, the distressed mother returned to Kolkata and tried to register a complaint. But the Kolkata police asked her to go back to Mumbai and register the complaint there instead, because the incident took place there. So Lucky came back to Mumbai and registered her complaint with the GRP which immediately got to work. But they had no leads or a mobile number to track

Miyan down. On the direction of the GRP Commissioner, two teams were dispatched – one to West Bengal and the other explored the Mumbai areas where the Bengal population is concentrated. Though the GRP managed to find and arrest Miyan, he received bail due to the non-cooperation of the local police. During the short time in which he was in their custody, the GRP relentlessly probed Miyan about the whereabouts of Kiran. He told them that he had left the girl in Mumbra but said nothing more. Meanwhile the GRP team in Kolkata returned. With the help of sources, they found out that an orphan girl was spotted in a local hospital there along with a maid. The GRP tracked down the lady and found the girl. The lady told the police that she had taken her home to keep her safe. Senior Police Inspector Shinde said, “We have informed the parents that Kiran has been found and is safe. Her parents are on the way to Mumbai. We will put up our evidence to take the accused Miyan to court.”

cting swiftly in the sensational kidnapping case of a 20-month-old boy, sleuths of the Kashimira police nabbed the culprit and rescued the child within hours of the crime on Thursday morning. According to the police, the accused who has been identified as Noor Ismail Jubair Shaikh (27) is a resident of Andheri and works as a construction worker in the Kashimira region. Shaikh frequently visited his co-worker – Kabirul Gazi’s tenement in the Shanti Vidya Nagri of Kashimira, where he came into contact with his wife Haseena (name changed). Mistaking Haseena’s friendly nature as a signal of her advances, Shaikh was involved in a onesided love affair with her. He then began pestering her to have physical relationships and elope with him so that they could enter into wedlock. The mother of two children, Haseena not only turned down Shaikh’s proposal but also warned him to stay away from her and her family. Irked over the refusal, Shaikh abducted Haseena’s 20-month-old son Suraj from their tenement on Wednesday. Shaikh then called up Haseena and told her to meet him if she wanted her child back. He promised her that he would let Suraj go after they got married. A shocked Haseena immediately registered a complaint at the Kashimira police station. “We instructed Haseena to keep Shaikh engaged on the phone line by pretending that she was

he statements of the latest four witnesses has rubbished the claims of actor Preity Zinta, who has alleged her former boyfriend and industralist Ness Wadia of molesting, abusing and misbehaving with her inside a stadium on May 30. On Wednesday, police recorded the statements of four witnesses, whose names were given by Wadia, said police. These four people are identified as Rustom Lawyer, his wife Gia Lawyer, Nicholas Chen and Saumitra Srivastava. None among the four corroborated the actor's claims that Wadia had misbehaved with her before abusing and threatening her on the fateful day, police said. According to police, Rustom, a senior corporate professional, said, “During the match, Wadia went to the actor and had a short conversation with her. Then I and my wife Gia saw Wadia walking away after which we both could not hear the conversation due to the loud noise in the stadium.” Gia's testimony was also on the lines of her husband, who denied having seen any sort of disagreement or heated exchange of words between the actor and Wadia, informed police. Another witness, businessman Nicholas told police that he he didn't see any dispute between the two. Also, he added that he did not see Wadia abusing, shouting and touching Zinta's hand, informed the police. Saumitra, the fourthe witnesses said, “When I arrived at the stadium I was busy searching for a seat. I noticed Wadia with his family standing at the back since their seats were occupied and they too had nowhere to sit.” Saumitra, a city based management consultant added, “After some time, I noticed Wadia in the front row having a conversation with Zinta. Though I could not hear what both of them were talking, it did not look anything more than a normal conversation.” In June, Zinta registered a police comlaint against Wadia for molesting, abusing and threatening her during an IPL match between Kings XI Punjab and Chennai Super Kings on May 30 at Wankhede Stadium in South Mumbai. Ponder awhile… “The most perfect political community is one in which the middle class is in control, and outnumbers both of the other classes.” — Aristotle

Judge as a governor W

HY should not a judge become a governor? In Kerala, lawyers are of the view that a judge should stay away from politics and after once becoming a judge, must not become a governor of a state. Former SC judge Mr. Sathasivam who has been appointed by the BJP as governor of the Kerala is attracting much criticism from across the country. This is the first time Delhi has chosen a judge as the governor of a state. The new governor is himself quite amused by the criticism: he says that quite a few judges, after retirement, do some odd jobs. They start some small business units, take up consultation jobs. He explains that there is nothing wrong if they have a brush with politics also. Mr. Sathasivam also says he has no language problem in the state and that will be an advantage for him. It is not fair to read into this appointment of similar motives by the BJP government. For the Congress, governor who is appointed by the BJP government is not acceptable. Time was perhaps when a governor used to take an impartial stand. Today, the situation has changed. The centre appoints governors who pulls up the state government, gives it no cooperation, holds up inconvenient bills and resolutions of the assembly. In fact, a governor under instructions from the centre can be very inconvenient to the state administration.

O Narendra Modi gave his first Independence Day message from the Red Fort. He mesmerised his listeners not only on the spot but thousands of them sitting in their homes and watching television. Business Line (Aug. 16) took the trouble to quote several listeners. Think of these to get an idea of what they felt. Omar Abdullah: “Modi speech at Red Fort is one of the best spectacular debut since Sourav Ganguly's century at Lords”. Tavleen Singh: “The best August 15 speech I have heard in forty years of political journalism”. S. Gurumurthy: “Wish he really changes title like 'Ministers' as 'Sevaks' and his title as 'Pradhan Sevak' by a Constitution change”. Vinod Sharma: “No script, no bullet-proof glass, no puppeteer. No one between leader and people....”

Yardstick to remember MEDIAWATCH M.V. Kamath said “Expectations from him were sky high and Narendra Modi did deliver, while posting some surprises along the way.” The paper said Modi “also broke with the formulaic fetishes of diversity” and spoke “To a shared national character by speaking to shared shame like rapes.” It added: “A good speech is judged by its style and substance, but above all by its impact. The Prime Minister's words on reducing rapes drew huge applause at Red Fort but they derive their true power from the possibility of how they will be heard in the millions of households where they were beamed.” In its concluding remarks the paper said Modi “has sent a message across the border too” and that was “instead of fighting each other, let's fight poverty together”. All that remained was implementation in the fields of land requisition, log jam, labour laws etc. The Indian Express (Aug. 16) in a detailed study of Modi's address said it had laid down “A new agenda for aspirational India”. There was, said the paper “no ambiguity” in the

Unfurling the tricolour Said The Hindustan Times (Aug. 16): “It was the perfect note to strike – the man from a poor family unfurling the tricolour from the ramparts of the magnificent fort built by a Great Emperor”. Continuing, it said: “Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day speech was confident, substantial and delivered extempore with great pizzazz. After the somnolent performance by past Prime Ministers, this was an electrifying one... The fact that he was able to bring so much to the table within a few short months of assuming office is commendable. If this is a blueprint for India, it is certainly. And it would seem that he will lead by example if his punishing work schedule is anything to go by.” The Hindu (Aug. 16) was similarly all praise for Modi. It said Modi “Promised changes in governance, a sharper and swifter government in the place of a bureaucratic establishment pulling in different directions.” It praised him for not belittling the achievements of his predecessors, said he seemed keen to move ahead on the basis of consensus rather than on functioning on the basis of his party's majority in Parliament. And for good measure it said. “With good governance and development as his buzzwords for progress, he promised to make his government an organic unit for fulfilling the aspirations of his people.” The Asian Age (Aug. 16) said that Modi's address “Did indeed turn out to be different

HE desire to live can only be satisfied when the soul realizes its eternal life. For mortality exists in conception rather than in reality. From a spiritual point of view mortality is the lack of the soul's understanding of its own self. It is like a person who had lived all his life in the conception that his coat was himself and when that coat was torn from him he believed that he would die. One experiences the same in life. The soul gets from this physical body a kind of illusion and identifies itself with this mortal being. Wise people of all times have practiced meditations to give the soul a chance to realize its independence of the physical body. Once the soul has begun to feel itself its own life, independently of its outer garb, it begins to have confidence in life and is no longer afraid of what is called death. As soon as this

phenomenon takes place a person no longer calls death 'death'; he calls death a change. A spiritual person will hope for the next life, and the pessimism of a material person works against his own desire. But the desire is there all the same. How does one attain to this

MATTER & SPIRIT continuity of life? It does not only depend upon a belief although belief may help some to realize that experience, and those who have no belief will not be able to find the way. Nevertheless, the continuity of life is possible logically since every man desires to live. For it is natural that no one will desire what is not possible, and where there is a natural desire the possibility of its fulfillment is already there.

DNA (Aug. 16) said PM Modi made an impressive debut at the Red Fort ramparts. “It may be” said the paper, “reasonably argued that Modi has lived up to the keen sense of expectations... Modi as Prime Minister must regularly and repeatedly articulate his views, irrespective of political implications. Only then can the full might of the state quell violence in all forms and influence a perceivable change in social mindset.” In conclusion it said “that speeches give people a yardstick to remember and review the covenant declared by rulers from time to time.” The Economic Times (Aug. 16) said that Modi “Now wants to replace the planning body with a think tank whose focus, presumably would be on policy choices to the exclusion of investment outlays”. It reflects, the paper said “The reality of evolution in the Commission's working,” adding that “It is welcome that the new government is building on the electronic banking infrastructure... to offer every household a bank account.” What is so obvious about all opinions is that they all looked at Modi's address in a positive way. As T.K. Arun wrote in the paper, Modi spoke as a leader who understands the problems of the land and is determined to tackle them and is capable of doing it. “This is a reassurance that the people need” said Arun, that has been missing in the years of drift under the UPA. The secret of this can be found by analyzing oneself. By studying the self one will find that the body is only a cover over one's real self. But by a still more profound study one will find that even one's mind is a cover over one's real self. As soon as one finds this out, one will become independent of the body as a means to live. Also, one will become independent of the mind to live. 'But', one might ask, 'if there is no body, then what is life?' When man is not conscious of his body, then he is conscious of his mind. When the eyes are open he is looking at things before him. When his eyes are closed then he is pondering upon what his mind has gained. In both cases he is dependent either upon his body or upon his mind to live, and this dependence makes the soul limited. It not only limits it, but it makes the soul mortal. In reality the soul is not mortal, but if the soul believes in mortality it is just like being mortal. — Hazrat Inayat Khan

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2014

SEPTEMBER 5 happens to be “Teachers' Day” and not “Students' Day” nor “Children's Day”. So it would have been better to use the occasion to compliment the teachers' fraternity on the service they are rendering in shaping the lives of the students who are the future pillars of our nation. One must realise that even in the IITs, the salaries of professors are nowhere near what the graduates get. In the primary section, most of the teachers in the village schools have to take up additional jobs to make ends meets. College teachers are forced to go on strike frequently to demand the implementation of the Pay Commission's recommendations. The assurance that their demands would be met would have been better than trying to catch the future voters young. — Dr V Subramanyan, Thane

A LOT of dust has been thrown on the forthcoming Teacher’s Day. It is difficult to believe that there has not been an attempt to give it a linguistic and regional twist. We do not know how to leave things alone. Why torture children into compulsorily listening to the PM? Surely the PM can talk at a time when children and teachers are at

Suicide-link indeed!

The statistics of the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco in the US reveal plenty of suicides committed by jumping into the water. However they have restricted this by barricading the danger zones and fortifying electronic surveillance. Unfortunately the side railing of the Bandra sea-link is just four feet high, which any body can climb. Security guards are few for the length of the bridge. Only six CCTV cameras have been installed, compared to the required 80. All these items need to be installed and security guards need to be deployed ASAP to prevent this menace. Considering the toll collection amount, these additional features should not be that big a deal for the bridge authorities.

Politicisation!

MODI'S decision to address school children on Teachers' Day is nothing but self-propaganda by making it mandatory for school children to watch the PM's address on television. I feel that it has created resentment among the students, parents and teachers and put the entire government machinery in a mess, as they have been threatened by the union government circular. If they do not attend the PM's address, action will be taken against them, which is nothing but dictatorship. The question is example, installing more CCTVs will not prevent suicides, because the victim does not announce his purpose in advance. It takes less than two minutes for the suicide victim to get out of the car and clamber over the railing. Thus the need is not only to post more personnel, but to train them them properly. In one of the recent suicides, a guard was actually on the spot. As soon as the victim stopped his car, the guard should have rushed over and asked him what was the problem. Instead, in the ample time it took to walk over to the railing and then climb over it, the guard apparently just stood and watched. There should be a change in attitude. — Firoze Hirjikaka, Colaba

They did it before the elections, paid a heavy price for it, yet are trying to do it again. To make their presence felt, the government called off foreign secretary-level talks with Pakistan to show resentment. 100 days of BJP in power has been insignificant and prices have continued to rise unabated. The government seems to have shifted their priorities elsewhere. Modi who used the soaring prices to beat the UPA seems to have no clue about how to bring it down. INTERVIEW

www.afternoondc.in

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2014

“If we need proper investigation and rise in conviction levels in the state, we need to privatise criminal investigations in our country,” says Snehil Dhall. Crimeophobia Limited is founded by Dhall, a qualified Criminologist from UK who has the experience of working with private sector and public sector professionals. Snehil has completed his schooling from Mumbai, India; has IB Diploma from Singapore and (Hons) Criminology Degree from United Kingdom. With knowledge of about nine different professions and being a criminologist – Snehil gives the company a perfect edge in conflict management. Over the past years, Snehil has gained the comfortable level of working with different nationalities, religious groups, professionals, students, genders and sex. His motive is to regulate the situation of social crime after considering every dimension of criminology to have a secure community. Crimeophobia helps one with research about conflicts in society, within the organisation or group, among individuals and provides the best possible report after consulting our advisors that come from various backgrounds - politics, lawyers, police, media, corporate affairs, sociologist and criminologist. “We help you find the right connection to expand your relations with overseas companies and/or Anti-Crime Professionals to have appropriate personal and business support service. We support you with appropriate travel guidance for UK and India, by conducting pre-departure sessions with information about cultural and professional protocols, useful emergency contact details, and other local amenities,” says Dhall. PHILIP VARGHESE spoke to SNEHIL DHALL about crime, crimeophobia, policing and a whole lot more...

‘PRIVATISE CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION’

Sushil Kadam | ADC

Did you always intend to be an investigator? After doing my schooling in the city at the St. Anne's High School, I did the BA (Hons) Criminology in the United Kingdom and an International Baccalaureate Diploma from Singapore. Then I went to the UK to start my private investigation firm, Crimeophobia and then I had an opportunity to attend and work with the United Nations. I did help people and the investigators to solve an organised crime related to a property case.

What inspired you to come out of criminologists and sociologists for with 'Crimeophobia'? further implementation of various The concept of a criminology firm projects. This team tries their best to has been constructed by me with integrate the combined guidance given an intention to collaborate all the by the advisors to provide best possible Anti-Crime Professions under a solution to a particular social conflict. common platform to solve criminality. The firm is structured How do you go about in an investigation of a case? with an intention to make the field When we are asked to investigate, we of criminology more privatised and support the criminal justice system with management patterns of private sector and vice-versa. Our team is a private body with a 2-tier team consisting of advisors and criminologists. The advisors come from various backgrounds, mainly, bureaucrats, policemen, lawyers, politicians, corporates, media, religions and educationalists. These advisors provide their guidance only to our team

carry out an introductory investigation and connect with various teams. We visualize and chart the war game scores of possible scenarios and our reactions to each. Adequate foresight, suitable deployment, polite yet firm handling of individuals and officials involved, and calculative implementation by the teams ensures a smooth and incident free community. The police station which had a minimum of one case from society on a daily basis has seen no complaints, since. Although this model is not understandable by most, it is one of the most effect mode of resolving criminal communal situations.

Do you deal with all types of crime? We deal only with social crime scenarios. These include: social criminal behaviour profiling, modernization of criminal justice system (police, courts, local authorities, security agencies and community development); consultancy on social crime situations & predeparture sessions (for Professionals, Tourist, Students and Government Officials); and mainly white collar & political crime.

You seem to have redeveloped Theory of Modern Chakravyuh? Yes, the new theory is based on the ground reality of the current era's world of crime that has an integrative combination of private sector and public sector daily activities. The conceptual framework of Chakravyuh comes right from the ancient Hindu mythology called -Mahabharat and it was considered to be the most reliable

War Strategy of ancient times.

What about victim support system in our country? The Justice System in the whole world is subjected to a variety of risks and specially in countries like India it is influenced by social elements. In India, law is above religion, but power is above law. With our daily routine it is very difficult for a victim to work similar to a Criminal who is usually guilty of their act and are not arrested due to which they keep their crime business active. We support only victims and try to balance the justice system by adding an additional weight on the victim's side who is harassed and possibly might get arrested as well. We support the victim in using the protocols a criminal would understand better and provide the exact presentation for the Criminal Justice System to convict them at the earliest.

How do you make this happen in supporting the victim? We carry out crime education and consultation through futuristic, practical and comprehensive study of internal and external scenarios, specifically meant for college students. The training deals with their professional sector's practicalities in the real world that supports them from being fooled. Our consultation takes care of all the relationships with the management, liaison capabilities, security structure, political situation, regulations to create a risk profile and design a customised, business friendly, efficient and cost effective criminology solution. Once the solution is provided to the client they have to hire their own recommended lawyer to fight the case

in the court room if the matter is not resolved outside court. However, our team provides constant documentation to support the lawyer's arguments in the court room which is one of the most important aspects of any case held at the court of justice. This also includes media management support.

What do you think about the qualities of our Indian investigators? If an activity is considered as offensive among a group of people, it is hence considered as a criminal act. However, if a person is fighting against a wrongful act of a gang or group, the person could still land up in a criminal act as one against a group is not propitiated. We support such individual and organisations with our image consultation to keep their tags away from negativity. This includes Crime Public Relations activities of Investigation, Situation Analysis and Awareness.

How can we change this situation in our country? Basically, we need to understand that you cant expect a 10th standard student to appear for the MBA exams. That's exactly what is happening in our policing system. The registration of the FIR is the most important aspect in the future of that particular case. If the person, that is the PSI, who is registering the FIR, misses a single important content, the entire case goes for a toss when it comes before the court during trial. So I think, the person who is registering the FIR should be well qualified in criminology or at least the government should allow privatise investigations.

Ganpati at home

Several people in the city get Ganpati home during Ganesh Utsav. We speak to a few people and find out more about their traditions >> Ranjit Pillai, a sales executive, and his family have a simple approach to celebrating this festival. He tells us, “Every year we bring home an ecofriendly idol of the same size. This year, we got a set of 36 decorative pieces and assembled it together. We also use traditional electric lamps for the lighting, which further enhances the beauty of the idol.”

>> At sound engineer Mayur Tambe's home, decorations are done in wood. He tells us, “I have attached a peacock feather on the top and painted the frame myself. Working on the idol was very satisfying. The only work that I didn’t do on my own was the diamond work on Ganpati Bappa.”

>> PR professional, Kruttik Parekh believes in having an eco-friendly festival and so, his idol is decorated with flowers. He tells us, “Our idol is made from shadu clay, decorated with diamond gems and surrounded by floral décor. The mandap is adorned with coloured lights beneath the flowers and decorated with silver nets on and around the idol.”

>> IT professional, Ankit Arora and his family also believe in celebrating in an eco-friendly way. They go as far as to use the same idol every year. He explains, “The idol that we have on display at our home isn't the one that we take for visarjan. We actually get a really small idol to immerse.”

>> At property consultant Dinesh Nagpal’s home, Ganpati celebrations bring the family together. The 34-yearold resident of Kandivali, tells us that the entire family is involved in decorating the idol. This year, they have used a lot of fabric, and placed the idol on a hand-wheeled cart, adorned with flowers. “Every year, we try to decorate the idol in a different manner. This year, we had a rath (chariot) on which the idol was seated,” he tells us. “We normally prepare Sindhi dishes such as Dal Pakwan and Kadhi Chawal during Ganesh Utsav,” he adds.

« store review: Bansri JeweLLery Lounge & aLLrounder

Luxe JeweLLery

Bansri Mehta is launching her flagship design studio and jewellery lounge at Breach Candy next week, on September 11. Yamini Walia takes a sneak peak to see if her collection is impressive

L

ocated right next to Mahalaxmi temple, Bansri Mehta’s new design studio is not too big, but it doesn’t compromise on customer convenience. There is an area dedicated to individual appointments with Bansri for custom designed pieces, while the rest of the lounge has a vintage Parisian setting and baroque display cases that showcase a variety of styles. From cocktail rings and earrings, to clutches and stunning neckpieces, the collection caters to everyone’s needs. Bansri has been designing jewellery since 2007, and her pieces have always been wearable and chic. Trained in jewellery and fashion design, Bansri draws inspiration from everyday objects and Indian traditions and heritage, as well as her contemporary life in Los Angeles, California. Bansri explains, “It’s about capturing beauty, evoking feelings and sharing an experience.” Reminiscent of the style of design made popular in Murano, Italy, but with a modern touch, Bansri’s designs are authentically crafted in distinctive ribbon, silk, and leather, woven into elegant silver or gold settings, exquisite precious and semi-precious stones and brushed gold medallions. Her signature wire-wrapping technique lends a personal, hand crafted touch to each piece, while convertible and detachable elements allow one to create several looks with the same piece. Two collections that are worth mentioning are the sterling silver collection and the safari collection (`2,800 to `18,000). The work done on these pieces is so intricate, that it took my breath away. My favourite is her range of clutches (`4,800 to `28,000), which will add a classy touch to your ensemble. I give her design studio a big thumbs up and recommend that you visit to check out her versatile timepieces. I am definitely going to visit again! where BANSRI JEWELRY LOUNGE, 901, Mahalaxmi Chambers, next to Mahalaxmi Temple, Breach Candy, Bhulabhai Desai Road contact 9930069915

n a city like Mumbai, it’s essential to have an activity centre that supplements your child’s academic capabilities through a cocurricular sphere. Allrounder is a place that offers all kinds of learning under one roof, so at first glance, it seems perfect. The area is divided into two floors, with activity regions on both the upper and lower sections. The activity centre is also home to a special tuition room, where your child can study under the guidance of a tutor. Confused about where to head first? All you have to do is glance at the blackboard on the lower floor, where the schedule for the entire day is listed out. Allrounder was founded by Bhawna Goel, a mother of two girls, with the aim to hone and polish children’s skills, as well as solve a parent’s problem of driving their children all around town, from one class to another. Bhawna explains, “Children today are very

bright — all they need is exposure to various co-curricular activities, so that they understand how to master the skill of their choice as they grow older.” It’s no surprise then that every activity at Allrounder is conducted by skilled professionals. From offbeat classes such as aero-modelling, to more popular ones such as yoga, gymnastics, dance, music, tabla and drawing, to enhanced learning classes such as chess and creative writing, Allrounder has something for everyone. Their USP is that they also have interesting activities for parents, which they can participate in while their children are at school. It’s safe to say that I was pretty impressed. I recommend paying them a visit, even if it is just to choose from a slew of activities that include zumba, yoga, tabla and classes on counselling, such as prenatal care,

career guidance, nutrition and marriage, which are usually scheduled in the morning or late evenings. where Allrounder, Shop No. 2&3 Jayant Sapphire, Sayani road, Prabhadevi contact www.allrounder.co

packed with shredded chicken, white beans and kidney beans and was hearty enough to be a meal on its own. Moving on to the salads, we tried two variants, the Gado Gado Salad with egg (`175) and the Slow Burner Salad (`175). The Gado Gado salad was made with shredded cabbage, carrots, boiled eggs, peas and tofu, and was covered in a peanut, red curry and coconut milk dressing. Although the dressing was flavourful, the salad wasn’t exemplary. The Slow Burner Salad fared much better with us. Packed with barley, avocado and highprotein lentils that were coated in a delicious sesame dressing, this lipsmacking salad will keep you full for hours. Next, we tried the Grilled Paneer Wrap (`150), Coronation

N

ew delivery service, 8, an obvious play on the word ‘ate’, aims to give you a fail-safe option when it comes to ordering a hearty, healthy meal. If you’re sick of the greasy noodles made in your canteen and can’t look at another slice of pizza without cringing, pay 8’s website a visit. A website that primarily caters soups, salads and sandwiches, they also offer salads, wraps, curries, desserts, platters and beverages. Unlike several other websites that deliver food, 8 promises you quality ingredients, fresh flavours, good hygiene and gourmet recipes that have been developed by a London-based, Michelin star chef. They deliver food anywhere in BKC in under 45 minutes, and we were thoroughly impressed by their packaging. Arriving in paper bags you’d expect to be handed at a boutique store, the items were packed in cute plastic containers and paper bags, and even though soups and curries were part of our order, we were thrilled to find that there were no leaks. We started our meal with the Broccoli & Spinach Soup (`160), which was hearty and minimally spiced, letting the flavours of the vegetables take centrestage. We also tried the Spicy Two Bean Soup with Chicken (`180), which was rich,

Chicken Sandwich in Multigrain Bread (`170) and the Superfood Sandwich in Multigrain Bread (`120). The paneer wrap, which can also be ordered as a sandwich, contained a bhurji-like filling, but the thick, doughy wrap masked all its flavours and it was too laborious to finish. The Coronation Chicken Sandwich, on the other hand, was delicious, with mildly-spiced chunks of chicken, lettuce, chopped almonds and apricots coming together to create a scrumptious and filling sandwich. The Superfood Sandwich, comprising of beetroots, tomatoes, avocados, lettuce and hummus, is another light, but filling option, ideal for a mid-day snack or a light lunch. From the curries, we sampled the Caramelised Chipotle Chicken (`375) and the Thai Green Curry (`275). The chipotle chicken had an appealing smokey, tomato flavour and the Thai green curry impressed us with its fresh, zesty palate. When paired with steamed rice, both preparations tasted delicious. To finish our meal on a sweet note, we tried Chocolate brownie (`75) and the Hazelnut brownie (`110). Both desserts were average. To go along with our meal, we also sampled the Lemongrass Iced Tea (`90) and Spinach Iced Tea (`90), both of which were absolutely delectable. Although spinach may not seem like a flavour you’d mix with an iced tea, the combination works well and the drink was extremely refreshing. On the whole, 8 offers great food, at competitive pricing. What we love about their website is that each category includes a variety of options, spoiling you for choice, with a short description of the ingredients that make up the dish. The next time we want to order a tasty meal that doesn’t compromise on health, we’re definitely going to turn to 8! Where www.8food.in Contact 9222248888 Meal for two `800

What’s CookIng? Master’s Imperial — a new whiskey

Most whiskey brands promise an exotic blend of some sort and wine shops are filled with varieties that are blended with single malts (we don’t see the point here) to make them fit into a more premium category. So, to say that I was sceptical about this new whiskey, which retails for a mere `385 for 750ml, is an understatement. But, one look at the quirky Master’s Imperial bottle, with its swing cap and innovative design and my scepticism had started to fade. The Indian-made whiskey has been blended with imported scotch and malts and a few sips later, I was a fan! The drink is extremely smooth, which is

something that I have never experienced in a whiskey this affordable — so much so, that you can it sip on it neat without the faintest burning sensation. There were notes of vanilla and apple, and it had a delicious, smokey aroma that added a nice touch. For the price that it is being sold at, Master’s Imperial is an excellent whiskey that blows its competition (which I would assume are whiskeys that cost between `100-300 for 180ml) out of the water. I have a nagging feeling that this is just an introductory price, but I wouldn’t mind paying a little more for a drink this good. Where Liquor stores across the city PrICe `385 for 750ml

okey Pokey has a strong following among those who know the brand, but it still has a way to go before it becomes as popular as other ice cream chains in the city. Hokey Pokey has been on a re-branding drive, with promotional menus, events such as Make Your Own Ice Cream and readymade tubs that are now available at retail stores. They recently introduced a melts menu at their Carter Road outlet and we paid them a visit to find out if they were worth digging into. I have known about Hokey Pokey for a while and so, there was no way that I was going to pop into their outlet and come away without trying their ice cream. They are famed for their cold stone varieties — made on an ice-cold stone slab that resembles a hot plate and allows them to mix and match ice cream, creating flavours in front of you without disturbing the temperature. So, you can choose from one of the several ice cream flavours (such as chocolate, vanilla and mint) and then pick your mixes: sprinkles, chocolate chips, cookies, gummy fruits, cashews or a range of branded chocolates.

>> The melts at Hokey Pokey won us over These are then combined and mixed on the cold stone, embellished with toppings of your choice and placed in a waffle cone cup. If you aren’t willing to experiment with your palate, try one of their trademark preparations — we recommend the Knight in Armour (`90/scoop; vanilla ice cream with Oreo cookies, dark chocolate chips and dark chocolate fudge) and Double Chocolate Therapy (`90/scoop; dark chocolate ice cream, white chocolate brownie, Nutella and dark chocolate fudge), both of which we thought were delicious. From the melts menu we tried the recommended Jalapeño cheese melt and the Mustard, Herb & Olives cheese melt — `99 each (you can add Monterey Jack cheese for an extra `20 per sandwich). The former was a simple preparation of cheddar cheese and jalapeños. They aren’t stingy with the cheese or the chillies, which makes this a deliciously cheesy, tangy experience. However, it was the Mustard, Herb & Olives melt that we were fans of, as the sandwich was extremely flavourful, with the kick of mustard lending it a tart touch. I was greedy enough to wish that they had combined the two sandwiches to result in a heavenly cheese melt, but in hindsight, I think they got it right by keeping it simple. We also tried the Death by Chocolate (`169), which is a thick (and we mean thick) brownie sandwiched between two slices of bread along with a generous helping of chocolate sauce. I am not a fan of dessert sandwiches at all, which is why I won’t order this the next time I visit. But, since several people do enjoy them, jumping on to the sweet (read: chocolate) sandwich bandwagon was a good call for Hokey Pokey. Their chocolate sandwich uses in-house brownies as layers between the chocolate and bread, so the sandwich is as sinful as it can be. As far as their melts menu is concerned, the sandwiches are simple, delicious and well-priced. I hope they take the menu across their other outlets as well, so that people have more than just ice cream to look forward to when they visit Hokey Pokey. MUMBAI MUMBAI| |FRIDAY, FRIDAY,SEPTEMBER SEPTEMBER03, 5, 2014 2010

>> Pierce Brosnan spills the beans about his latest release

He’s been a criminal, a detective and all-round charmer and now, he’s back to playing a spy for the first time since he played MI 6 agent 007, in the James Bond films. Pierce Brosnan talks to Rhea Dhanbhoora about what it was like filming The November Man and much more

R

ecently released film, The November Man, justifies Pierce’s belief that he still has what it takes to look convincing in an actionthriller film. The handsome Irish actor may not be James Bond any more, but we’re glad he’s back chasing bad guys and charming women in his new role. His new film revolves around the novel by Bill Granger, titled There Are No Spies and is based on Peter Devereaux, an ex-CIA agent, who must protect a witness, while teaching his CIA protege the ropes of the spy trade and holding important information about the Chechen War (Russia). Take a look at what he’s telling us about the film and his role.

Tell us about The November Man and your role in it. Peter is a dark character. ‘Every time he goes to the city, everyone dies like it is winter’— that’s a line from the book that is the perfect metaphor for his life. He has a gun and a knife — and knows how to use both effectively. Though he may question the morals and ethics of his job — especially aspects of state sanctioned murder — he is still capable and ruthless if he needs to be. There’s nothing black or white about Devereaux, he’s pretty lethal.

Right — this is the first time you’re playing a spy since being in the 007 franchise! How is this film different? It took us five years to make this film. After acquiring the rights, I wanted to produce something that I was passionately interested in. I also wanted to do something for my fans. The art of film-making has been a passion, so that has continued in the work I do. Okay, we have to ask this one! You were James Bond for so long — what was it like switching from playing such an iconic character; do you think it’s changed the way you approach roles? I definitely struggled to get under the skin of the suave British sleuth, who I played in four films between 1995’s Golden Eye and 2002’s Die Another Day. I had my own insecurities when I was portraying Bond. Daniel (Craig) is a brilliant Bond. He owns it a 100%. But, I had a fairly good audience with my days as the spy. It was fertile ground for me. I have been very receptive of my James Bond act!

Do you identify with the character you play? Spy films give me goosebumps. Even though Peter is extremely street smart, I am not very sure how I identify myself with him. But, sometimes, it’s good to play someone you are not!

Olga Kurylenko, who plays Alice in the film, is no stranger to spy films either — she was in Quantum of Solace. Did you talk about the Bond franchise a lot? Olga is a great girl. She is very hard-working and extremely talented. She understood Alice well and I think she has done complete justice to her role. As for 007... she told me she is a big fan of mine and loved me as James Bond!

So, is that why you wanted to do the film? After Golden Eye [a James Bond film], I wanted to produce something with my production company, Irish Dreamtime. We bought the rights of the book, There Are No Spies, and that’s when Roger [Donaldson] and I decided to make a film.

You mentioned that you and Roger decided to make this film together. What was it like working with him? I have worked with Roger on Dante’s Peak and had the most wonderful time. He’s a good friend, and somebody who I deeply admire and respect.

He knows the art of story-telling and how to preserve the drama of a scene. His instincts for the emotional beats are so well founded, because he invests so much of himself into it. It is always a pleasure working with him, and it was on The November Man too. It was great doing some magnificent stunts under his direction.

Tell us about some funny moments on set? Well, I remember, we were shooting in a market in Belgrade (which is a beautiful city) and these guys were running with guns in their hand — some of the public got really scared and started shouting! It took us a while to settle things later... it was quite amusing.

Australian actor Luke Bracey is also in this film with you — and you’ve got a few fight scenes! What were scenes together like? Luke is fearless, courageous, and has got talent at his fingertips; it’s a beautiful thing to behold. When I see him, I re-live the same passion and it is great working with someone who is so enthusiastic. I am sure he has a long way to go in the industry. I remember him talking about how it took him a while to realise that he working with Pierce and not Bond.

What’s in the pipeline for you now? I have six films coming up that are all quite interesting: Love Punch with Emma Thompson, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last September, A Long Way Down with Aaron Paul, Toni Collette and Imogen Poots, which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in February, The Coup with Owen Wilson and Survivor with Milla Jovovich and Dylan McDermott, for director James McTeigue. I’m also currently shooting for The Moon and The Sun, for director Sean McNamara.

What were some of the some of the most challenging scenes to shoot? We had little bit of a tough time shooting in Belgrade, where there were explosions, a few car sequences, driving in rush-hour traffic and the people there were just amazed by what was happening around them! But, it was exciting to perform these complicated car stunts with my Bond stuntman, Mark Moltram and blow up a van in the middle of a city.

Anything else you’d like to tell your fans in Mumbai? I’d like to thank all of them for being with me and watching my films. And also — please watch The November Man! As the film says, ‘A spy is never out of the game.’

With all the stunts — you must have had to get really fit to play this role! How did you go about it? Would you do it again? Generally, at the age of 61, one’s bones start giving up. For me, it’s a new day every day. I enjoy what I do and will continue to do this as long as I can. Mark (my stuntman) helps me a lot. I was a good runner in school and I played a lot of rugby — which I’m sure helped me stay fit.

Pierce Picks:

something that you would love to be part of: Liberty or Death by David Cook. Your favourite place in the world: Florida. someone you’d love to work with: Matthew McConaughey. someone who inspired you most: My mother if you weren’t an actor, you would be... A film maker or an artist.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced global passenger traffic results for July showing demand growth of 5.3% (measured in revenue passenger kilometers or RPKs) over the previous July. Capacity expanded exactly in tandem with demand (5.3%), resulting in a global load factor of 82.3%, unchanged from last year.“July was another strong month of growth for air travel. People are connecting by air in ever greater numbers. That’s true across all regions. Despite the various economic challenges, the outlook for passenger travel remains broadly positive. The overall sluggishness at the beginning of the year appears to be behind us with growth in China and other emerging economies offsetting recent deterioration in the Eurozone,” said Tony Tyler, IATA’s Director General and CEO.

India’s Container Growth Moderates In August

Container volume growth (aggregate) across major ports across India moderated in August’14 to 3% after a healthy pick-up in the past 2 months. Particularly, volume growth at JNPT slowed to 4.5% (vs. 13% average growth in June-July). Aggregate cargo volume growth remained tepid at 1.5% YoY, dragged by a sharp decline in fertilizer and iron ore segments, while volumes across other commodities grew marginally/remained flattish YoY. According to Religare Institutional Research “While overall volumes have picked up in FY15 – with the highest contribution from JNPT – growth normalised from the high levels of past 2 months during August. We believe volume growth in the next 2-3 years would continue to be aided by a soft base (given the slump seen in the past 2-3 years) and an improving macro. We have a Buy on GDPL and a Hold on CCRI”.

India’s Manufacturing, Services Output ‘Japan has five trillion dollars in banks sitting idle...’ India’s Infrastructure Expand At Slower Pace Than China Sector Can Gain From It

By A Business Reporter

E

merging markets registered stronger growth in manufacturing as well as services sector during August but India expanded at a slower pace than China during the month, an HSBC survey said. The HSBC Emerging Markets Index (EMI), a monthly indicator derived from Purchasing Managers’ Index surveys, compiled by Markit, rose to a 17 month high of 52.5 in August, up from 51.7 in July, signaling stronger growth of output across global emerging markets. “The pace of economic growth in emerging markets continued to revive from the stagnation seen earlier in the year. August saw the fastest pace of expansion for 17 months, buoyed by growth moving

up a gear in China’s services economy, Markit Chief Economist Chris Williamson said. Among the largest emerging markets, China posted the fastest growth since March 2013. Output in Russia and India rose at weak rates, while a marginal contraction was signalled for the fifth month running in Brazil. During August, the HSBC composite index for India, which maps both manufacturing and services, stood at 51.6, whereas for China it was 52.8, Brazil (49.6) and Russia (51.1). An index measure of above 50 indicates expansion. “Growth was also recorded in India, albeit with the pace of expansion moderating. However, the renewed growth trend in recent months represents a welcome improvement from the prior down-

turn, Williamson said. Service sector output in emerging markets rose at a stronger rate in August, with growth almost matching June’s 15month high, while manufacturing output rose at a rate unchanged from July’s eight-month high. Meanwhile, the outlook for global emerging markets continued to deteriorate, as per the report. The HSBC Emerging Markets Future Output Index, that tracks firms’ expectations for activity in 12 months’ time fell to the second-lowest level since the series started in April 2012. “Growth in Asia remains below potential. Weak manufacturing requires more policy support and may impede the progress of structural reforms, HSBC Co-Head of Asian Economic Research Frederic Neumann said.

Mallya To Pursue Legal Action Against ‘Wilful Defaulter’ Tag By A Business Reporter

D

eclared a wilful defaulter by state-owned United Bank of India, UB group Chairman Vijay Mallya yesterday disagreed with the action of the lender and said he would pursue legal action. “We were not given a hearing, we have not appeared before them, we disagree with their action and we shall pursue legal action, Mallya told reporters after the annual general meeting of United Breweries here. Reiterating his intention to seek legal recourse, Mallya said: “I have great faith in the judicial system of our country and as I have said, I will pursue the legal remedies that are available to me. On Monday

United Bank of India declared Mallya and three directors of debtridden Kingfisher Airlines, wilful defaulters as the company allegedly indulged in diversion of funds by opening multiple accounts. Kingfisher Airlines and directors declared as wilful defaulters will not be able to borrow from banks in the future. They would also lose Director-level positions in companies and criminal proceeding could be initiated against them, if warranted, to recover the money. The carrier had allegedly opened multiple current accounts leading to diversion of funds, said a bank official, adding that there is a balance of Rs 7.5 crore in other-than-the-designated current account as on date.

The Kolkata-based bank is the first PSU lender to initiate the process of declaring Vijay Mallya and three other directors of the grounded Kingfisher Airlines as wilful defaulters a couple of months ago. Other banks such as State Bank of India, IDBI Bank and Punjab National Bank have also initiated the process of declaring KFA and its directors as wilful defaulters. UBI’s exposure to Kingfisher Airlines was around Rs 350 crore as part of consortium led by State Bank of India. The consortium of 17 banks, has an outstanding debt of about Rs 6,521 crore from the now-grounded carrier and outside the consortium, the bank gave about Rs 60 crore loan for Pre-Delivery payment.

‘I think there is a lot of optimism on both sides about increasing relationship, economic relationship and bilateral trade... They (Japanese businesses) all feel that with Modi leading the government, they will see execution happening at much faster pace. They are more optimistic in investing now.’ — Industrialist Baba Kalyani, Co-chairman of the Japan - India Business Leaders Forum

By Ajay Kaul

S

eeking to enhance bilateral trade, business chambers of India and Japan have formed groups to focus on specific sectors like infrastructure, energy and skill development while working for removal of any bottlenecks by talking to the respective governments. The decision was taken during a meeting of the Japan- India Business Leaders Forum here during the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as he pitched for Japanese investments. Leading Indian industrialist Baba Kalyani, co-chair of the forum, said there is renewed enthusiasm among the foreign investors as they feel execution of decisions will happen at a much faster pace given their experience of working with Modi as the Gujarat Chief Minister. “I think there is a lot of optimism on both sides about increasing relationship, economic relationship and bilateral trade, he told PTI in an interview here. He said the Japanese businessmen “see in Modi a person who is great in execution and therefore are far more optimistic about what

NGO Pleads For Keeping CBI Chief Out Of Coal Scam Probe By A Business Reporter

A

lready under attack, CBI Director Ranjit Sinha yesterday faced fresh fire from an NGO which moved the Supreme Court demanding that he be kept away from the coal block allocation scam probe because he interfered with it. In an application filed in the court, NGO, Common Cause, referred to reports about the entry register at the CBI director’s residence containing names of “influential persons allegedly involved in the coal-gate scam. It accused him of scuttling the probe in the “high magnitude cases in which 20 FIRs for offences of corruption, cheating, and criminal conspiracy have been lodged and two charge sheets placed in trial court. The NGO alleged that the entry

register, which it filed in a sealed envelope along with the application, suggest that influential people named in coal blocks scam, 2G cases and 4G scandal met Sinha and “many of the meetings were held late at night. The application also referred to the apex court orders to keep the probe free from any interference and to the changing of the status reports of the probe at the instance of political executive. The NGO said it was filing the application in the context of the “extraordinary developments that have recently come to light. It claimed there are “incontrovertible facts in the public domain which lead to the “inescapable conclusion that it is necessary to remove Sinha from the case for ensuring fair and impartial investigations.

MUMBAI | FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2014

Akhil Kapur is the latest action hero in tinsel town. He has the lineage of a superstar action hero like Vinod Khanna being his nephew and is set to make a smashing debut in director-producer Anand Kumars ‘Desi Kattey’. Sandeep Hattangadi caught up with the young gun at the producer Anand Kumar’s plush suburban office to know more about this star in the making

Your debut film is about to be released. Any nerves? Not at all. I am confident about the film as director Anand Kumar has done a good job and the film deals with a sport like shooting which has not been explored in the realm of Hindi cinema.

What is the film plot like? It’s about two young boys who work in a desi gun manufacturing factory and when they grow up they are taken under the care of an Army Major played by Suniel Shetty who trains them in the sport of shooting but as luck would have it my character turns to crime and becomes a sharp shooter and the other boy played by Jay Bhanushali enters the Olympics competition and makes

the country proud by his performance in the sport of shooting. Sasha Agha plays a village girl who is the romantic interest in the film.

How did you prepare for your role? I had to learn shooting from a professional shooting champion like Vijay Kumar and learn the lingo which is prevalent in the interiors of UP and Bihar and dress like them and learn the lifestyles of the people living in the villages. I am also a trained martial arts expert in various formats like parkour, and hand to hand combat which I have depicted in the film.

We had a blast shooting as the shoot unit was new and encouraging and also my co-stars like Suniel Shetty, from whom I learnt a lot of action technique and acting and I have always been a great fan of his acting and action capabilities. Also Jay was a good friend as was Sasha and the director Anand Kumar was a very understanding director.

INTERVIEW

How was the shoot like?

You could have been launched by your uncle as he did with your cousins Akshaye and Rahul? I deliberately didn’t as I wanted to take the hard way to my stardom as akin to my uncle who started as a villain and later became a big star.

Sonu Sood, the man from Moga in Punjab has come a long way in the Hindi film industry and in the south with successful films like ‘Dabaang’, ‘Buddah Tera Baap’, ‘Ek Vivah Aisa Bhi’, ‘Entertainment’ etc and now he is continuing on his way to success with director Farah Khan’s ambitious heist thriller ‘Happy New Year’. Sandeep Hattangadi spoke to the handsome actor at the launch of a Parisian perfume for which he is the brand ambassador

There is a lot of buzz about ‘Happy New Year’ Yes. The film has turned out really well and is all set to break records at the box office. I am also happy with the

What is your character in the film? I play an ex-army man called Jag who is deaf because of a mishap in the war and now he is a part of a gang who want to steal a fortune. He is a bit of a loud character and is always ready to strip his shirt and scream at the top of his voice. I create some really funny situations in the film. How was it like working with the ensemble cast? It was great fun to work with stars of the calibre of Shahrukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Deepika Padukone, Vivaan Shah, etc and I got to learn some more things and we had a blast shooting for the film.

The promos term your character as a ‘loser’. Why so? It’s because the character doesn’t have any goal in life and is just a happy go lucky guy until he gets involved in a sensational robbery.

INTERVIEW

You are working with a female director for the first time. How

Your recent films have shown your

comic side. Yes, I enjoy doing comedy and I was appreciated in films like ‘Entertainment’ and ‘R Rajkumar’. I also enjoy doing villainous roles.

Sadly we don’t see you in solo hero films. I get many offers to do solo hero films but I am not happy with them and only do roles which fascinate me.

So what next? My dream is to be an action hero like Akshay Kumar.

By Chaitanya Padukone

Doesn’t a dainty, angelic girl like Saasha feel ‘lost’ in a crime thriller ‘Desi Kattey’ (country-made pistols) directed by Anand Kumar? Actually ‘Desi Kattey’ (DK) is not a crime-thriller, its an action-drama movie which also revolves around ‘gun shooting’ as a national sport. It’s a beautiful film about friendship and the importance of relationships where I play an impactful role of a physiotherapist. We take Jay ahead towards international shooting as a sport where he represents India! With your chic westernized glam image, did you have to put in extra efforts to play an ethnic ‘desi girl’ in this movie? Not at all. Few know that I am very ‘desi’ at heart and I even love dal chaawal! Playing ‘Paridhi’ in ‘DK’ was actually an extension of my off-screen exuberant, fun-loving persona, which I enjoyed. In contrast, my debut character ‘Ritu’ in ‘Aurangzeb’ was actually more tough for me, as her character was bold, glam and power-driven.

was that experience? Farah is really a great lady and an excellent director and she knows

what the audiences want and is also very chilled out. She also has a good sense of music and choreography. The Indiawaale song is a chartbuster.

Who are your idols and icons? For me it has always been Bruce Lee, Jean Claude Van Damme’ and other action heroes.

Shooting with guns gave me a ‘high’: Saasha Agha

SONU SOOD GOES DEAF FOR NEXT FILM

way my role has shaped up.

He has given me his blessings after seeing the film and told me that I had done a good job. I have always been a fan of his movies like ‘Mera Gaon Mera Desh’ and others.

Are you busy down South too? Yes. I am busy in South and have a film with Mahesh Babu coming soon titled ‘Aagadu’. And Hindi films? I just have ‘Happy New Year’.

Recently you got threats from the underworld as did SRK. Yes. I have got security from the cops and am satisfied with it.

You are endorsing an international brand of perfume. Yes. I am happy to endorse international brands and hope to do some more.

Any regrets? I wish my most loving mother was here to see my success.

How was it shooting with senior actor Suneil ‘Anna’ Shetty who taught you ‘rifle-shooting’ and your romantic co-star Jay Bhanushali? With his mentoring pally nature, Suneil ‘Anna’ Shetty is a true hero for me in every sense and I had a blast working with him in ‘DK’ . Both Jay and I shared a lovely rapport. And it was spontaneous romantic chemistry which crackled on screen.

You seem to have taken a fancyfetish for ‘guns’—koi raaz ki baat ? Alag kism ki ‘shooting’ hi toh hai. (laughs). Secretly wished to learn how to shoot properly, so that no one ‘messes’ with me ever. Shooting with guns on the DK sets gave me a ‘high’. Is your romance with your off-screen close friend composer Sachin Gupta still rocking? Sachin and I are very strong like a rock and very important to each other. I feel very happy to have a supportive, encouraging man like him in my personal life.

Your celeb-mom Salma Agha will debut as a director with the official remake of the milestone musical ‘Nikaah’ (1982). I know she will direct me very well, so I know I am in good hands.

n Khalid Mohamed’s documentary on Shyam Benegal, the filmmaker makes a very pertinent and candid point. He says, he never thought his films were entertaining, because his idea was to engage the audience— which he did expertly in his 23 feature films (his prolific output consists of ad films, documentaries and TV series). His first film, Ankur, released in 1974, and the last, Well Done Abba in 2010, and in between an impressive list of films, with an amazing range of subjects. In the film called The Master: Shyam Benegal, his most frequent collaborator Shabana Azmi says that Benegal’s social commitment may have swamped him, but each and every one of his films, had something of significance to say, and that remained in the memory years after watching the film, and that is more than what can be said about so many of today’s 100-crore films. That is not to undermine entertainment, but at the same time, not reduce a powerful medium like cinema into an empty-headed and trivial pursuit. A significant milestone in Benegal’s career was Manthan, a film about Gujarat’s Amul milk revolution pioneered by the visionary Dr Verghese Kurien, because it was the first crowd-source film—it was made with a budget of Rs.10 lakh, with Rs.2 contributions by the members of the milk co-operatives. A project of this kind had never been attempted before, or

EW DELHI: Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor Khan says she did not like going to school as she used to feel left out for being an average student. The 33-year-old actress, who is UNICEF's celebrity advocate for education in India, said as a kid she would not get any attention from her teachers for not being a front bencher. “My mother used to wake me up for school at 6 am... I used to tell her 'one hour more please'. At the age of 10, I used to feel the pressure that I had the heaviest school bag ever. I used to sleep in the class and was not given much attention in the class as I was an average student. “Front benchers got all the attention. I used to feel left out and tell my mother that I will study at home or watch a movie,” Kareena told media persons here.

ew Delhi: Sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan called S.D. Burman an “unmatchable artiste” while unveiling a biography on the legendary music composer, which has been penned by veteran journalistauthor Sathya Saran. Titled on the composer's famous song 'Sun Mere Bandhu Re', the book tries to

film was an enjoyable familylike affair, even if the subject was serious. Yet, there was no compromise on professionalism—the detailing that went into all his films in terms of cinematography, production design, costumes, music, dialects spoken by the characters, seem exemplary today. The people who worked with him have vivid memories of shooting, which they share with Mohamed with a great deal of warmth and sincerity. Interestingly, Ram Gopal Varma, in an interview for the film, cites Benegal’s Kalyug as a major inspiration. Benegal was a pioneer of the parallel cinema movement in Hindi cinema and the work those

filmmakers did has had a far reaching influence, perhaps without directors and audiences even realising it. Because those films were made with the heart and the mind, and not only with an eye on the box-office. Mohamed’s film is a valuable record, not just of one filmmaker’s work, but of an era. It should be compulsory viewing for film and media students, and, of course, true film buffs.

encapsulate the much-celebrated music journey of Burman and includes anecdotes from megastar Amitabh Bachchan and actress Waheeda Rahman among others about their working experience with him. “He was one of the music greats of our country, his thinking and creativity was unique. The range of music he gave from 'Bandini' to 'Pyaasa' to 'Guide', he was amazing at everything. His melodies had a different appeal. “One of the best things about him was that he brought folk music in film tunes,” Khan said at the launch on Wednesday night. Khan said that Burman's greatness stood unmatched and even his musician son R.D. Burman could not really surpass him. “A few days ago, people tried to make me say that R.D. Burman surpassed his father in music talent, but I could not say that because S.D. Burman was unmatchable and stood apart among the artistes that come before and even after him,” he said. Saran, a self-confessed fan of S.D. Burman's work, said she only started writing the biography after she felt she could understand Burman. “I wanted this book to be different from his previous biographies. I took some time and started reading about him to understand the kind of person he was.”

RAJNIESH HAS A ‘SPARK’ OF TALENT! Rajniesh Duggal was noticed in the Vikram Bhatt horror film ‘1920’, ‘Dangerous Ishq’ and 'Samrat and Co’ and recently won the 'Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi', reality show is all set to wow the viewers with his daring act in the film ‘Spark’. We caught up with the hunky star who was a supermodel and has won the Mr. India title, to talk about his new film and this is what he said to Sandeep Hattangadi What is the synopsis of ‘Spark’? The film is about Arjun, a young man played by me, his love and the betrayal that comes with it. Arjun is trapped by the masters of a game of deception – Govind Namdeo and Ashutosh Rana – when he is about to marry the girl of his choice as they feel that a game of deception could not be completed without him. His every single movie is designed by the masters and how he manages to come out of the trap forms the crux of the story. Who is cast opposite you? I have been teamed in the romantic lead opposite the top Bengali heroine, Subhashree Ganguly, Ashutosh Rana is in a

double role, Ranjeet, Govind Namdeo, Sanjay Mishra, Manoj Joshi among others have key roles. Where was the film shot? The film has the backdrop of Germany where director V.K. Singh had earlier also shot his last film ‘The Traitor'. 'Spark' has been produced under the banner of Anurish Media Private Limited by R.S. Yadav and Naresh Gupta with music by Lalit Pandit, Monty Sharma and Nitin Soni.

What next? I have been signed for a romantic comedy film titled 'Direct Ishq Ho Gaya' which is directed by ‘My Friend Ganesha’ fame director, Rajiv Ruia who has also won the Dadasaheb Phalke award for best director with me and Nidhi Subbaiah in the

leading roles and is produced by Baba Motion Pictures. The shooting for the film is currently in progress in Benaras and the next schedule is planned in Mumbai Dockyard. I will be seen adorning the role of ‘Bicky Shukla’ a typical boy from Uttar Pradesh village, with a carefree attitude who has adapted the Bohemian style of living. Self obsessed and sure-footed he is a guy with mixed shades. The film was signed by me before winning 'Khatron Ke Khiladi', and the character I am playing in this movie is a big challenge for me. I never wanted to play the sweet nice guy and hence wanted to do this role. Rajneish sure has a “bright” future ahead!

EW YORK: Kei Nishikori became the first Japanese man for almost a century to reach the US Open semi-finals on Wednesday after securing an epic 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (9/7), 6-7 (5/7), 6-4 win over Stan Wawrinka. Nishikori, the 24year-old 10th seed, triumphed in 4 hours 15 minutes, his second marathon clash after needing 4 hours 19 minutes to get past Milos Raonic in the previous round. Nishikori will face either world number one Novak Djokovic on Saturday for a place in Monday's championship match. World number one Djokovic, the 2011 champion, reached his eighth consecutive US Open semi-final by downing Murray 7-6 (7/1), 6-7 (1/7), 6-2, 6-4 for his 13th win in 21 meetings against his childhood rival who had taken the 2012 title. Wimbledon champion Djokovic and Murray had spent a record-equalling 4 hours 54 minutes contesting the 2012 final and their quarter-final clash threatened to surpass that mark when they needed over two hours to get through the first two sets of a tie that started on Wednesday and finished Thursday. By the end, however, Murray was struggling with what appeared to be a recurrence of his long-standing back problem, a legacy of having spent three and a half hours more on court than Djokovic in getting to this stage. But victory was also a tes-

"We both gave our best and at times the tennis was not nice but that was due to the intense physical battle in the first two sets," said Djokovic. "I didn't expect anything less from Andy. Nishikori, whose match against Raonic ended at a record-equalling 2:26am on Tuesday, was stunned by his win over the third seeded Wawrinka, the Australian Open champion who had won the pair's two other meetings without dropping a set. Serena storms into US Open semi-final clash with Makarova N

By Amanpreet Singh

NEW YORK: Serena Williams roared back from an early deficit to defeat Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 6-2 on Wednesday and book a US Open semi-final clash with Ekaterina Makarova. Playing in her first Grand Slam quarter-final of 2014, world number one Williams kept her bid for a thirdstraight US Open title -- and sixth overall -- alive as she stretched her perfect record over the 11th-seeded Italian to 6-0. "I'm just so happy to have won," the 17-time Grand Slam champion said, noting that she'd had a "tough year" in the majors. "It feels so special to be back in a semifinal, especially in New York." In Makarova she'll face a first-time Grand Slam semifinalist. The 17th-seeded Russian advanced with a 6-

4, 6-2 victory over former world number one Victoria Azarenka -- runner-up to Williams the past two years. "I'm feeling amazing -finally I'm in a semi-final," said the Russian left-hander, who had failed in four prior major quarter-finals. "It's a great feeling." In a battle of two 32-yearolds, Williams denied Pennetta a repeat of her best Grand Slam performance -- a semi-final run in New York last year. But the Italian gave Williams some tense moments in the early going, seizing a 3-0 lead with two breaks of serve in just eight minutes. World number one Williams responded by winning the next six games to take the first frame in less than half an hour.

EW DELHI: India's tennis campaign at the Asian Games appears to be falling apart even before the start as a cloud of doubt is now hanging over Rohan Bopanna's participation since the top doubles player is keen to salvage his 2014 pro season by playing on the ATP Tour instead of competing in Incheon. It has been learnt that Bopanna, who last year became world number three in the ATP doubles rankings, is not happy with his 2014 run and wants to make amends by winning matches on the demanding Tour in the remainder of the season. If Bopanna decides to opt out of the Indian squad, it will be the country's second big loss as top singles player Somdev Devvarman has already pulled out of the event due to same reason. "Rohan is in the same boat as Somdev, only in doubles. I am not sure yet if he will be

29 Sania in final of mixed doubles with Soares

NEW YORK: Sania Mirza is in line to win her third Grand Slam title and first with new partner Bruno Soares as the top seeded pair struggled past Yung-Jan Chan and Ross Hutchins to reach the mixed doubles summit clash, here. The Indo-Brazilian team overcame the unseeded but fighting Tapiei-German combine 7-5 4-6 10-7 in the semifinals, which lasted one hour and 33 minutes. The last-four pairs contest was very close as both the teams broke each other four times and Sania and Soares won overall 74 points, only three more than their rivals. Sania and Soares are up against unseeded pair of Abigail Spears from the USA and Santiago Gonzalez from Mexico. It will be Sania's fifth mixed doubles final appearance at the Grand Slam level, having won Australian Open (2009, 2012) twice with compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi.

It has been learnt that Bopanna, who has played a pivotal role along with Somdev in India's good show in the Davis Cup in the last few years, had a chat with Amritraj on Wednesday about his participation and is still undecided. Amritraj, who is a respected figure in the Indian tennis circle, reasoned that the players should not be portrayed as bad boys if they decide to concentrate on their individual careers. "All of them are very good boys

UMBAI: Mumbai boy Raahil Mullick clinched the FIDE Candidate Master title by winning the Under-7 open category at the 10th Asian Schools Chess Championships that concluded in Taichung, Taiwan last week. 1472) of Malaysia, a media release said here today. Both the boys finished with seven points with the Indian boy placed first and the Malaysian second. Another Indian boy -- Arjun Sidharth S (rating 1144) ended up fifth with 5.5 points, as per the Asian Chess Federation's website. Navy rally to make winning start M

UMBAI: Last year’s runnersup Indian Navy made a winning start by recording a come from behind 3-1 win over Rhema Sports in a Super Division match of the PMC Bank-MHAL (Mumbai Hockey Association Limited) League - 2014 and played at the MHAL Stadium, Churchgate, on Thursday. After Sonu P. opened the scoring for Rhema in the 16th minute, Navy quickly hit back netting the equaliser through captain Amrit Kiro’s penalty corner conversion in the very next minute. Five minutes later Mohd. Fahim Khan from a

field effort added the second for the sailors before Ved Prakash atoned for his earlier mistakes to score the third in the 68th minute. Promoted outfit Rhema Sports, like in the previous match showed a lot of promise at the start and once again went into the lead. But, thereafter, they were unable to maintain the momentum and had they been sharper upfront the outcome would have been completely different. Instead the Rhema side allowed their fitter rivals to wrest the initiative and take control of the proceedings.

Indian players must pick tips from overseas stars: Veldhoven

ARGIE AVENGERS Argentina dish out friendly revenge versus Germany

D

USSELDORF (GERMANY): Argentina spoiled the party for world champions Germany by hammering the hosts 4-2 in an international friendly in Duesseldorf on Wednesday in a repeat of the World Cup final. Manchester United's record British signing Angel Di Maria scored once and made goals for Sergio Aguero, Erik Lamela and Federico Fernandez as Argentina won their first game since losing to Germany in Brazil. Andre Schuerrle and Mario Goetze replied but Germany were brought crashing down to earth by a ruthless Argentina display in what was Gerardo Martino's first match in charge of the South Americans. Martino, who filled the vacuum left when Alejandro Sabella declined the offer of a new contract after the World Cup, said the victory should not be over-hyped. "They were missing a lot of players and also had three players who retired," said Martino, who left the Barcelona job after just one season at the end of the last campaign as they ended without a trophy.

"That's not easy to try to find a new team. Di Maria was more prominent than he was in the World Cup." His German counterpart Joachim Loew refuted suggestions that Argentina had avenged the defeat in the final. "It can't be revenge. You can't repeat the final. I can't actually fault the team because they have never played like that together before. Some players aren't in form," said Loew. Goetze's extra-time winner at Rio de Janeiro's Maracana on July 13 sealed Germany's fourth World Cup triumph and there was a jubilant, capacity crowd of 51,132 packed into the Esprit Arena on Wednesday evening. Before kick-off the home fans got a chance to say a final farewell to Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker, record goal scorer Miroslav Klose and World Cup-winning captain Philipp Lahm. All three retired from international football after Germany's success in Brazil. Only four players who started the World Cup final were in the German line-up, with Manuel Neuer captaining the side in the absence of his injured Bayern Munich

teammate Bastian Schweinsteiger. Argentina's team showed just four changes from the last time the sides met, with Javier Mascherano wearing the captain's armband in place of absent Barcelona star Lionel Messi. Di Maria, who missed the World Cup final through injury, set the tone of things to come with a piercing run early on before Mario Gomez missed the first of a string of scoring chances that came his way. Argentina keeper Sergio Romero stood tall when the Fiorentina striker was sent clean through and turned his shot over. There was real quality on show when Argentina got the opening goal after 20 minutes. Getting possession near the corner of the penalty area, di Maria played in a sumptuous cross with the outside of his left foot that left the unmarked Aguero with an easy close-range finish. Toni Kroos fizzed a shot just wide for Germany before Gomez was again denied by Romero. This time the keeper saved with an outstretched foot after Marco Reus set the German forward up inside the box.

Mumbai City FC ropes in Peter Reid and Steve Darby for ISL

NEW DELHI: Mumbai City Football Club named eminent English football manager Peter Reid as Team Manager and experienced coach Steve Darby as the assistant coach for their campaign at the Indian Super League (ISL). During his career as a Manager, Reid has been at the

helm of affairs at top teams that include England Under21, Manchester City, Sunderland, Leeds United, Coventry City, Thailand and Plymouth Argyle. Speaking on the occasion, Reid, a former England midfielder, said: "It's a great opportunity to coach in the

Indian Super League. I enjoyed working overseas with Thailand and I am very much looking forward to this new challenge! "We have a very competitive side, Friedrich is a great signing, you don't win Germany caps by luck or play over 300 Bundesliga games!," he said.

EW DELHI: Bridging the gap between proven international stars and home players will be a challenge but Delhi Dynamos coach Harm van Veldhoven feels the presence of names like Alessandro Del Piero and Zico in ISL will gradually help in developing the national team and boost its rankings. The inaugural Indian Super League is to be held from October 12-December 20, and the Dutch-Belgian manager said it will be of paramount importance that the Indian players listen carefully and pick up tips from once-globally renowned footballers such as Zico, Del Piero, Robert Pires, David Trezeguet, Luis Garcia and

Freddie Ljungberg. "It's important that these players (and coaches) say the right things at the right moment and it's also very important that Indian players listen and pick up the knowledge. Day by day, gradually, you will see the Indian players grow and also the national team (in terms of rankings)," Veldhoven said. "The task is to get the Indian and international players onto a similar level. Of course, it's very, very difficult, and there is also shortage of time," he added. "We want to bring it (standard) to the same level, higher level, whether it's about on the pitch or off it, organisation and organisers. Yes, it will definitely need some time to take the next step..."

Don’t expect medals from hockey teams after Govt apathy: Batra

N

EW DELHI: Hockey India (HI) secretary general Narinder Batra said the country should not expect a medal from the national teams in the upcoming Asian Games in the wake of government's "shoddy treatment" of the sport. "People should not expect much out of both and men's and women's team in the current scenario. The government has completely turned its back on the sport, especially in the last three months," Batra said claiming lack of adequate funds have hurt the teams' preparations. "If at all the players are able to make an impact, the credit will only go to them. But I am not very hopeful. The women's team were forced to train on worn out turfs and to top it all

the camp of the junior teams have not been sanctioned. You can't expect much in a scenario like this," Batra fumed. Batra is claiming lack of funds at a time when SAI, the government's nodal agency, has released Rs 11.27 crores to HI, an amount more than the sport's annual allocated budget of Rs.10.50 crore. Indian men bagged a bronze in the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou while the women's team returned empty handed. Talking about the third edition of the Hockey India League, Batra maintained that he has not been intimated about the pull out of Daburowned Mumbai franchise, adding the 2015 edition of league will see two more teams than the present six.

for a little extra focus between 40 and 50. He said, "Once you cross 50, your instinct will take over," Rahane said at the pre-match press conference. "My focus in the third ODI was to focus that bit harder once I crossed 40, at least for those 10 next runs. After that I backed my instinct," he added, crediting the team's newly appointed director-

of-cricket. "I was batting well in the first two matches (at Cardiff and Nottingham), but got out on 45 and 41. That hurt me a lot because if you are batting so well in good conditions against this attack, if you get a big score it is good for my confidence and team morale," Rahane said. Talking further about his maiden ODI hundred scored

at Edgbaston, Rahane said,"It was really special. After two 40s in the first two ODIs and the way I got out, I was really hurt. I couldn't sleep after the Cardiff game because the way I got out stumped. It was a really silly mistake of mine. I was really determined in the third ODI. Once I crossed the next 10 runs after 40, my natural game took over," the soft-spoken Mumbaikar said.
