219 out of 200? Maharastra University of Health Sciences awards students more marks than the maximum attainable in the viva for a couple of subjects

No Ebola in Mumbai Civic hospitals are fully prepared to tackle the virus Full Report on Pg 8 if it ever surfaces here
ast week, students from Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) were in for a shock when they checked their third year marksheets on the MUHS web portal, as the university had given them more marks than the maximum marks attainable in the vivas for two subjects. After bringing this to the university's notice, the faulty marksheets were replaced with new ones on the web portal. The third year BHMS (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery) marksheets were issued in the first week of July. Subjects like Gynecology and Surgery each carry 200 marks for the viva exams. However, some students' marksheets indicated that they had secured more than 200 marks. The students thus had no idea of their actual marks in these viva exams. A student told the ADC that he had scored 219 out of 200 in the Gynecology. “I also secured 230 out of 200 in the Surgery viva
exam. We were confused when we got our results. This is a major mistake on the part of the MUHS and the state government should look into this matter to save our careers.” The students soon brought the issue to the notice of the university, which without any notice, took down the results and uploaded fresh marksheets with reduced marks on the web portal. However, while doing so, the varsity also reduced the marks of students who had initially obtained less than 200 marks, making the entire marking process seem confusing and faulty. A student who had scored 172 marks, later got around 156 marks in the updated marksheet. Many students have thus applied for revaluations now. An official of the MUHS, who did not wish to be named, said, “The goof-up has been corrected and students have got the correct marks. Students should not worry as the marksheet now shows the actual marks awarded by the examiners.”

Dhyanasadhana College demands irregular donations and fees By Priyanka Dhomse
D
ispleased parents and students have been gathering around Thane's Dhyanasadhana College for the last one week, raising their voices against the college management for demanding high and irregular sums of money as donation and fees in exchange for admission. Parents and students have been constantly visiting the college, seeking admissions, but have been turned away by the management for various reasons, including the demand for high donations which they cannot afford. After a few days, local Congress activists joined in and questioned the trustees, principal and management of the college. Manasi Sakpal, a student seeking admission, said, “I've been coming here since 10 days. First they demanded Rs 10,000 as donation and Rs 5,000 as admission fees for Commerce. When we said we couldn't afford that price, they kept my admission on hold.” One parent said, “I have here to admit my son to the Commerce class. They have demanded Rs 20,000 as donation and Rs 8,000 as the fees. We spoke to other parents and learnt that they've been demanding different amounts from people, ranging from Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000.” After a long discussion, Satish Pradhan, a trustee of the college, said, “We confess that we had been taking donations before, but we won't take them any more. From tomorrow, we will start admitting students who have applied through the online process.” This decision by the college management has put the students who have applied offline in a sticky spot. Therefore, the Congress activists present said that they will demand a ban on government grants to the college.”

ith mobile phones becoming increasingly indispensable in people's lives, it has caught the fancy of the state public health department as a means to create awareness about health and health-related services available in the state. After identifying the potential to start 'M-Health', the state health department is toying with several ideas to make use of the mobile phone's power of penetration for the people's benefit. Speaking about some of these ideas, Sujata Saunik, principal secretary of the Public Health Department in the Government of Maharashtra, said, “We've been thinking of programming certain emergency numbers like ambulance (108), blood on call (104) and the number for pregnant women (102) directly into cards, just like some other numbers that are already programmed when you purchase them. This will not only let the user have ready access to these numbers in case of emergencies but also help us save some money that we spend on the Information-Education-Communication (IEC) activities for these numbers. That money can be be used elsewhere.” The department will meet offi-

Maharashtra's own COPTA
Just as Maharashtra is going to have its own Clinical Establishment Act, it will soon have a Control of Tobacco Products Act, (COTPA) of its own, as well. The Public Health Department of the Government of Maharashtra is working on a draft of a Maharashtra specific COTPA where rules and regulations will be relevant to the state. “We will be looking at COTPA of other states like Assam and West Bengal and make an Act for Maharashtra on those lines, with relevant and suitable provisions for the state,” said Saunik. The state is seeking help from NGOs like Mumbai First and Salaam Bombay and Tata Memorial Centre to draft the bill. The implementation will be the responsibility of the urban municipal local bodies and gram panchayats in the rural areas. The draft should be ready by November and will be introduced in the winter session of the Assembly, informed Saunik.

Rise of NCDs can impact India’s Corporator litters ward economic growth This was the collective opinion of participants at a discussion on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs)

T
here is an urgent need for an integrated approach to tackle the burden of Non-Communicable diseases (NCDs) in the country, and that any further delay is likely to have a detrimental effect on the economic health of the nation, claimed a multi-stakeholder discussion on ‘Facing Our Future: Countering Non-Communicable Diseases in India Through Investments in Innovation’ hosted by Partnership to Fight Chronic Diseases (PFCD) on Wednesday. The participants included representatives from public health departments, policy makers, medical practitioners, patient groups, pharmaceutical and diagnostic companies. Dr Kenneth E Thorpe, Chairman, PFCD, said, “The exponential rise of NCDs in India can impact economic growth through a number of different conduits. Most of the NCDs like diabetes or heart disease affect the person in their productive years between 30 and 70 years asserting immense pressure on public health expenditure. Another key dimension is the higher treatment costs for NCDs as compared to communicable diseases.” “Diabetes, cancer, vascular diseases, hypertension and stroke are on the rise in this country. Some of this is the expected effect of an aging population, but other factors include unhealthy diets and lack of physical activity,” he added. According to Sujata Saunik, Principal Secretary, Public Health Department, Government of Maharashtra, creating a comprehensive healthcare policy agenda to address India’s complex healthcare challenges, specifically NDCs, is the need of the hour.
Speakers and panelists at the multi-stakeholder discussion on ‘Facing Our Future: Countering Non-Communicable Diseases in India Through Investments in Innovation’, hosted by Partnership to Fight Chronic Diseases (PFCD) on Wednesday. “Efforts are on to define the role of various stakeholders at state and district levels and we are aiming to consolidate the effort by bringing private and public entities together on one platform,” said Saunik. Emphasising on increased awareness campaigns around NCDs, Dr Daksha Shah, Deputy Executive Health Officer, NCD, Public Health Department, BMC, said, “There are aggressive awareness campaigns initiated in Mumbai by the municipality which sensitises people about the various lifestyle issues amplifying NCDs in the region. We encourage early diagnosis in order to facilitate timely preventive measures and treatment.” Dr Jayesh Lele, Indian Medical Association Secretary, Maharashtra, said, “Preventive steps are critical to arrest the growing NCD burden in the country because direct benefits of a healthier nation apart, the indirect gains would include lower employee absenteeism resulting in increased productivity and higher GDP growth.” All the panelists were of the opinion that the need to strengthen national monitoring and surveillance, scaling up the implementation of evidence-based measures to reduce
risk factors like tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and harmful alcohol use and improving access to cost-effective healthcare interventions to prevent complications, disabilities and premature death, is the way forward. According to the Non Communicable Diseases Country Profiles 2014 released by WHO, NCDs are the biggest global killers accounting 38 million deaths every year with a whopping 28 million in low and middle-income countries, including India. As per the report, NCDs account for nearly six million of the total mortality in India, which is 60 per cent of the total mortality reported annually in India. The report further states that India lacks an evidence-based national guideline for the management of these major NCDs through a primary care approach. 100 million people in India are likely to be suffering from Type 2 diabetes by the year 2040. This will severely undermine plans for a more productive citizenry and will also devastate the nation’s finances because of the resources it will take to care for the growing numbers of ill citizens.
He was protesting against civic apathy regarding clamping down on illegal fish vendors creating dirt and stench near S K Stone Junction in Mira Road By Suresh Golani

empers ran high as municipal corporator Suryakant Mhatre (Congress) spilled garbage inside the local municipal ward office in Mira Road on Wednesday. Carrying a bag filled with garbage, Congress corporator Suresh Mhatre barged into the local ward office (Ward No 5) in Mira Road and began littering the place. Mhatre was protesting against the inaction by ward officer Dadasaheb Khetre in clamping
down on illegal fish vendors which had encroached upon a pavement leading to the Sheetal Nagar area from the S K Stone Junction in Mira Road. “The entire stretch of road has been encroached by the fish vendors which has led to a health hazard due to the dumping of fish leftovers. Repeated complaints to the ward officials and the commissioner had gone to deaf years prompting me to take this step,” said Mhatre.

Are the police taking a back seat?
Not very long ago, when Satyapal Singh was police commissioner, Mumbaikars had publicly demonstrated against the dismal law and order situation. The city then had seemed under siege, with rapes and robberies and murders occurring with regular frequency. And the blame was placed squarely on the then CP's shoulders. There was much relief at his departure, when he announced he was leaving to join politics. When the new commissioner came in, there was hope that times would change for the better, that crime would reduce and the police would become more vigilant. Not much has changed, and it seems that we are still at the mercy of rapists and robbers and murderers, and now, also crooked cops, some of who are extortionists and can jump off from the first floor and escape! Who do we pin the blame on?

Bhagat and the Internet
Chetan Bhagat is to release his new book, Half Girlfriend, in October. Twitter users are already on a roll, taking jibes at the title. One user says, “I broke up with my half girlfriend. There was a lot of fraction between us.” Bhagat may have won over most Indian readers. But the 'biggest-selling English language novelist in India' just cannot seem to find a break among Englishspeaking Internet-using Indians. He hasn’t done much to state his case either, having made some really bad judgment calls on the Internet. He once said, “The rupee is asking, is there no punishment for my rapists?” on Twitter and then deleted it. Tweeting his opinions on Gaza, he said, “What is happening to Gaza isn't fair but sadly that is the only way sometimes terrorist organisations and their supporters learn to

behave.” Social media largely viewed it as “justifying killing of children.” And you wonder how a man who is often observing the world around to draw inspiration could get it so wrong, and then go
compounding the error by choosing to say it out loud on the Internet. No matter what critics say, Chetan Bhagat is widely successful in the subcontinent with six best-selling books, four of which have led to high-grossing Bollywood films, not to mention his debut screenplay gig for the Salman Khan-starrer 'Kick.' He enjoys overwhelming attention here in India. But it seems to irk him a little that America does not acknowledge his work. Despite the calm tone of his recent ‘Huffington Post’ piece titled – ‘I write about an India that the West is not interested in,’ we hear desperation in his voice. Now that he’s successfully infiltrated the Indian market up to saturation point, the West’s indifferent attitude towards him may just motivate him to take them on. They have so far not bought his “easy-read” stories, will narrating them some other way make any difference?
We can swirl the wine in these chalices or goblets, or in plastic glasses!
Given the current situation of Mumbai in the rains, the Shiv Sena and the BJP, who jointly head the BMC, should pray that elections of whatever sort are never ever held in July or August anytime in the future. They would lose, fair and square!

Not enough lifeguards and lack of beach safety equipment is a cause for major concern By Khushboo Panjabi
T
he lifeguards of the Brihanmumbai Mumnicipal Corporation (BMC) who were present at Juhu beach were not able to save the three teenagers on the evening of August 1, due to the high tide and also beacause they had no beach safety equipments available with them, said the police. After a long delay of nearly five years, the proposal to buy beach safety equipments was tabled in the standing committee meeting in the month of April and June this year but, there was no final call taken on it even as there are cases of drowning at the city's six beaches being reported every monsoon. Raising concerns over this issue Devendra Amberkar, opposition leader of the Congress said, “BMC is just not concerned about the lives of the Mumbaikars. Twice the proposal got tabled in the standing committee but nothing has materialised so far.” The recent incident which happened in the Juhu chowpaty which is almost a 6.5 km long beach which claimed lives of three teenagers and the life guards were not able to save them because of the high tide and lack of safety euipments. The Mumbai fire brigade officials were going to present a new proposal for
12 equipments which including semi-inflatable boats with OBM and trolleys (6), jet-ski with trolleys (7), jet-ski operator helmets (18), ring buoy (18), rescue spinboards (9), basic life support kits (9), surf boards (9), rescue tubes (18), hand sirens (9), life jackets (27), rechargeable torch / search lights (9), lifeguard
BMC apathy bared
Amberkar also pointed out that as the Metro railways have started now, Mumbaikars and people from all over the globe visit the city and experience the change. chairs (7) and floating nylon ropes (18). These equipments will be used to fortify the city’s six beaches. “Is BMC going to buy these equipments after the monsoon gets over or is it waiting for more lives to be claimed? Secondly, the tenders for the equipment were floated in June 2013, but Litmus Innovation Private Limited, the company that bagged the contract, refused to supply the items in the allotted amount of Rs.1.47 crore, citing cost escalation of Rs.1 crore. This forced the BMC to raise its budget to Rs.2.69 crore,” said Amberkar. Another concern he raised was: “There are only 56 lifeguards which are divided amongst the six beaches. Out of 56 - 12 lifeguards are permanent, 22 are temporary and the remaining 12 are hired during the monsoon season. There should be more lifeguards hired.”

BEST feeders to Terminus 2 terminated By Vishnudas Sheshrao
W
ith the newly established feeder bus service to the the International Terminal 2 (T2) of the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport running at a loss, the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) Undertaking has decided to terminate it by this weekend. The feeder service to the Metro stations have also been facing the same problem, but since its losses are not as high as the T2 feeders, BEST will either reduce or reschedule the service. BEST officials admitted that the undertaking had failed to popularise its new services which have been fetching only single digit passengers per day, consequently not even earning enough for the maintenance of the buses. Following the opening of the T2 a few months ago, the BEST launched new city buses– air conditioned and normal – to connect the airport with the rest of the city. In the first week of June, after the Metro started, BEST established new services around the Metro stations. “Though the number of passengers in the Metro feeders is in double digits,” said one official, “it is still below the economical mark.” BEST general manager O P Gupta told re-
T
porters that “every bus service needs to fetch at least 51 passengers a day to break even and pay for fuel, maintenance, salaries and other recurring charges.” He added, “Both, the T2 and Metro station feeders, are not receiving the required 51 passengers per service. The T2 services hardly get 3 to 5 passengers. So we have decided to terminate the service for the good of the BEST.” But he is hopeful about restarting the service after the monsoon, possibly around Dussera. He added, “Even the feeder buses to the Metro railway stations are running at a loss. They get around 30 to 40 passengers per bus. We are planning to reschedule these buses once the Metro authority fixes its ticket fare issue and its schedule.”

umbai's crime branch on Wednesday arrested a 36year-old extortonist who demanded money from a dozen businessmen in the city. The accused, identified as Dharmendra Janani (36), was arrested by the sleuths of Unit 11 department of crime
branch. Janani had a unique way of targeting his victims. He made a list of phone numbers of businessman by taking their numbers from advertisements in newspapers. “Subsequently, the accused used to send SMS on the vicitm's mobile and demand money from them, said Avinash Sawant, senior inspector of Unit 11. In this re-
gard, a businessman from Charkop area lodged a complaint against an unknown person, who was demanding money from him. On August 2, Janani had sent an SMS on the complainant's mobile stating that if the extortion amount of rupees five lakh is not paid to him then he would kill his daughter. Finally, a trap was laid by
the sleuths of Unit 11 and the accused was arrested in the western suburbs under various sections of the IPC. Cops bust gang of robbers LCB unit solves Rs.13 lakh robbery case after two men are nabbed with arms in Palghar By Suresh Golani
W
ith the arrest of two persons by a special patrolling unit in connection with an illegal firearm possession case, the Local Crime Branch (LCB) unit of the Thane (rural) police managed to solve a robbery case reported from an industrial unit in Palghar last month. According to the police, following directions from Thane (rural) SP, the LCB team led by Police Inspector Kishore Khairnar had intensified 'Watch Patrolling' in the Boisar-Satpatti-Palghar region. On August 3, a patrolling unit detained two men who were found roaming suspiciously in the area near the Bidco Company in Satpatti. The duo was identified by their accomplice Anubhav Atmaram Kini, who is already in police custody, as Lalchand Subhaga Yadav and Ravindra Dhanushdhari Uphadhya were found to be in posses-

On the day of the incident, the Imran Akhlaak Ahmed Khan and his minor accomplice broke into the shop through the roof when no one was present inside. Just a couple of hours after the theft, the police got a tip off that the phones were being distibuted just a stones throw away from the Kherwadi police station, where the two were caught red handed. ccording to the special police order, restaurants in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane can now serve food and beverages till 1.30 am; discotheques in 4-star and above hotels can operate till 3 am; lodging house licenses to be open 24 hours a day; and managers’ names can be included in the entertainment licenses. The order comes in the wake of a meeting between a Hotel and Restaurant Association of Western India (HRAWI) delegation led by Vivek Nair and the Commissioner of Police (CP) on these and other key issues faced by the hotel industry. “Prior to the issuance of the police order, many local police stations in Mumbai would ask bars and restaurants to close at 12.30 am, so that the premises could be vacant by 1.30 am, since that was an assumed deadline. Almost all restaurants complied with this deadline, even though it was a contradiction to govern-
ment resolutions issued on June 5, 1999, and December 3, 2011, which allowed establishments to serve liquor till 1.30 am. For many years we have been petitioning the police to allow bars and restaurants to stay open till the official deadline. We are glad that the current CP has finally accepted our petition and given a clear directive to all police stations that they should not enter any premises on this pretext before 1.30 am,” said Kamlesh Barot, former president of the HRAWI and representative when the CP and Joint CP Vivek Phansalkar. At the meeting, the CP patiently gave explanations for each slide having precincts and directives instantaneously for resolvable deterrents that were vexing the hoteliers. “We are seeing a refreshing change of attitude and intent. We, as hoteliers, are not seeking any special favours, but a healthy business atmosphere to grow in,” said D S Advani, president of the HRAWI.

08 CITY No Ebola in Mumbai By Vishnudas Sheshrao
T
he Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport authorities in Mumbai have confirmed that they have not received any notification or alert from the Airport Authority of India regarding the Ebola virus which had raised serious concerns in some cities in Africa and in the United States of America. Officials from the Public Health Department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that they are keeping tab on the outbreak of Ebola in various countries. Civic hospitals are well prepared to tackle any case which may surface in the city. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has raised concern over the outbreak of Ebola, a deadly virus that has been contracted by an estimated 1,600 patients around the world since this March end. More than half of those infected are now dead. The WHO advised screening for Ebola at all international airports around the globe. While talking to the ADC,
Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport officials said, “No notification or alert has been received from the Airport Authority of India, so far.” The city's airport authority stated that there are few international flights between Mumbai and Africa. Ebola is not an airborne disease so one is not likely to catch its virus just by being in the proximity of someone affected by the virus, unlike swine flue or SARS. Instead, it spreads through direct contact with bodily fluid. If an infected person's blood or vomit gets in another person's eyes, nose or mouth, the infection may get transmitted. There are reports that the virus has come to humans through bats. Additional Municipal Commissioner of Civic Public Health Dept, Sanjay Deshmukh said, “No intimation about Ebola from the airport authorities has been received so far.” He added that public health department is keeping tabs on Ebola virus and the medical staff is on 'standby' to counter it.
College demands irregular donations and fees By Priyanka Dhomse

ispleased parents and students have been gathering around Thane's Dhyanasadhana College for the last one week, raising their voices against the college management for demanding high and irregular sums of money as donation and fees in exchange for admission. When we said we

I had a meeting with Congress president and we have decided to face the elections together.” Amid claims and counter-claims over the number of seats to be contested, the NCP chief had said
times, but the response has been dismal. Speaking to the ADC, Senior Police Inspector from Azad Maidan police station, Suhas Gokhale, said, “The boy is from Khaate village, Indore. He father is a daily wage labourer and he doesn't understand what we are saying.
He keeps telling us to send someone from Mumbai to drop his son, but how can we do that? So we're still waiting to hand over the boy to his parents.” When the little boy showed up at the police station, the police initially though he may have some information that could lead to the seizure of drugs. However, the soon learnt that the boy travelled without a ticket from Indore in hopes of meeting his favourite characters from the Sony Entertainment Television show. Gokhale said, “I spoke to him to find out his
story and finally told him that the people he was looking for had gone out.” Meanwhile, Gokhale's son, an advertising professional, had told the story on a social networking site. Officials from the channel picked it up and contacted the police. "While the intention is not to encourage others to run away, the cast is planning to meet the boy to counsel him against taking any such step in the future. The cast may meet the boy in the presence of his parents when they will, hopefully, arrive in the city in a day or two," said Gokhale.
‘It’s just a publicity stunt’ Defence advocate Rizwan Merchant assures court that DIG Paraskar will give full cooperation, says the model's accusation is a bid for publicity incident took place on December 1, 2013 and December 7, 2013. The victim registered the FIR on July 24. In the court room of special judge Vrushali V. Joshi, defence lawyer on Wednesday read some of the conversation from the emails which were exchanged between the accused top cop and the victim model. He said, “As per one of the emails when Paraskar addressed the victim as his sister and daughter then why didn't she object as after molesting sometime last month that he and Gandhi alone would decide on the issue and no one else. He said, “These tweets are good enough to prove that she was neither depressed nor mentally traumatised. She was living a normal life.” Keeping these tweets and delay of seven and a half months in register-
ing the FIR, Merchant reiterated: “either it is a false complaint or consensual sex.” Merchant held the victim responsible for misleading the police during investigation. He said, “Initially the victim said in her FIR that she gave her mobile phone, which had messages of her with Paraskar, to him. Later in the supplementary FIR she said that she herself sold her phone to someone else. This proves that she is framing wrong charges against the DIG.
the state on a 50:50 basis. The Congress secured just two, while NCP won four of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in the state. In the 2009 Assembly election, the Congress and NCP had contested 174 and 114 seats respectively. The NCP demands met with an equally strident response from Congress leaders, including state Congress president
Manikrao Thakare and the Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, who opposed increasing the NCP's quota of seats and claimed that they were also ready to contest on their own. A meeting of leaders of both parties during the last week of July had ended in a deadlock, and it was decided that the issue would be left to Pawar and Gandhi to resolve.

Sena unlikely to contest MLC bye-poll By A Staff Reporter
T
he Shiv Sena is likely to give the upcoming August 21 Legislative Council bye-election to the lone Elected by Members of Legislative Assembly (EMLA) constituency seat a miss given the fact that it just does not have the requisite number of MLAs in the lower house. Since the bye-election is being held for a lone seat and with some of its own MLAs having been elected as MPs in the recent Lok Sabha polls, its numbers have drastically reduced. The required number of votes needed to win the election has been pegged at 141. The Sena-BJP alliance in the Legislative Assembly has, on its own, 89 members as against the ruling Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) alliance strength of 142 members. A senior Sena leader, while speaking to the ADC on
Vinayak Raut conditions of anonymity, sarcastically quipped, “Now we do not have anyone like Rahul Narvekar.” This indicates that the party did not have anyone prepared to be the proverbial sacrificial lamb in a election where it has no chances of an outright victory. It may be recalled that Rahul Narvekar (now an NCP MLC) was a regular party candidate, be it for the Rajya Sabha or the Legislative Council elections, only to withdraw later as the numbers would not add up
in his favour. The bye-election to the lone upper house seat has been necessitated with the sitting Sena MLC Vinayak Raut having now been elected as Lok Sabha MP from Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg constituency. Raut was elected to the same EMLA constituency on July 28, 2012. This means that any other candidate getting elected to the upper house will enjoy a four-year term there. The electoral college for this EMLA constituency comprises 288 MLAs from the Legislative Assembly. In the recent Lok Sabha elections, eight of the sitting MLAs have been elected as MPs, thus effectively reducing the strength of the lower house to 280 MLAs. The lone nominated MLA from the AngloIndian community, however, is not eligible to vote in this election.

n view of the large number of people from Mumbai visiting their native places in Konkan for the Ganesh festival that begins on August 29, Minister for Public Works Department (PWD) Chhagan Bhujbal yesterday asked the National Highway Authority (NHA) to repair the potholes, widen the roads and make the Mumbai-Goa Highway a four-lane road by August 20. Chairing a meeting on the issue at state Sahyadri guest house, he said that if the NHA fails to accomplish the task within the deadline, the PWD will fill the potholes from August 21. Bhujbal added that the state PWD was quite capable of filling the potholes on the highway within two to three days. The Mumbai-Goa national highway number 17 happens to be the major road link used by natives of Konkan region other than the Konkan railway to visit their native places during the Ganapati festival. cided to ban the entry of heavy goods vehicles on the highway between 8 pm to 8 am during the 10 days of Ganesh festival, from August 29 to September 9. Besides, the government has also kept the option of using the Mahad-Natunagar-Vinhere road link as an alternative to the Kasheli ghat section and is to be maintained in operational condition. Considering the ban on the entry of heavy vehicles on the highway, the government has also decided to earmark designated spots and open playgrounds for parking of heavy vehicles. In another major decision, the government has decided to remove all illegal encroachments at the Vadkhal intersection to remove the cause of traffic jams on the highway. The Mumbai-Goa national highway number 17 is a 475 km long road divided into six sections. On the issue of expanding the highway into a four-lane highway, Bhujbal directed the authorities to complete the process of land acquisition within a month.

No chance for Congress as Opposition in House become clear by now that will not get the staItusTtheofhasCongress being the Opposition party in Parliament. It is demanding this position as a matter of right. The Speaker has made it known that if she grants the Opposition the status it is demanding, it would be an illegal and unconstitutional act. The Congress party has only 44 MPs in the House and it is to be recognised as the Opposition party, it must have 10 per cent of the strength of the House — 53 members. Evidently, the Congress is becoming desperate: The scene Rahul Gandhi created in the House yesterday shows that he wanted the Speaker should allow him to speak. The Speaker declared he can raise an issue in the House only after giving notice. Rahul Gandhi said there is 'a mood in the Parliament that only one man's voice counts — the voice of the prime minister.” What the Speaker was letting him know was, as per the rules of the House, only one recognised Opposition has a right to make a speech with regard to any issue. Rahul Gandhi joined other members of the party and stormed into the well of the House -- shouting slogans. He made unfair comment on the Speakers' role in the House. The ruling party members were quick to retort that his behaviour was unparliamentary.

APE is a crime but not one merely of passion. It’s a weapon used to subjugate, to perpetrate hate, to force submission, to prove a point, to avenge, even satiate the need for retribution, however misplaced. For obvious reasons and in sharp contrast to most other crimes as or more grievous, rape evokes very strong responses. In that, lies the paradox of the social treatment of the offence. There are parameters which need to be fulfilled; parameters that are at direct variance with each other. Consider this: while on the one hand, there’s an overwhelming view to treat rape on par with any other crime and, concurrently, free the ‘victim’ from social ostracism; on the other, the impassioned enrage towards the ‘accused’ in the media, overwhelming pressure on investigating authorities and a collective cry to hang the accused almost infers a near conclusive guilt. The two, at variance, deter the progress of logical processes and place hurdles in the way of legal resolution. Laws are created and modified to meet social needs. In that, it would be a given to understand that no law is absolute in itself. Lawmakers constantly attempt to tweak the law to address real-time needs which change almost constantly. The Delhi gang-rape and the outrage that ensued was a trigger to tweak the law to meet inadequacies that had to be addressed. Following them being addressed, it must be realised that the new law once again remained open to change that needed to follow in the passage of time and dynamic realms of social behavior and it wasn’t absolute either.
Change in law was needed The reactions that followed Delhi gang-rape were warranted in that they triggered a change in the law – a defined shift in onus where the involvement of juveniles in rape was concerned; more severe punishment in cases of acid-attacks; an enhanced punishment for rape compounded with other offences like murder and others. That said, as is the wont, certain areas were ignored in the process. Real-time situations cannot be simulated to aid parliamentary processes and need to actually happen before law-makers wake to a socio-legal need and…legislate! Only recently, the Anti Corruption Bureau invoked the Prevention of Corruption Act; laid charges of extortion, threat and blackmail on two Mumbai policemen following a real estate agent’s complaint that they were helping three men blackmail and extort Rs.50 lakh from him. The complainant, a young estate agent alleged in his police complaint that when he met one of them at a police station recently, he was told that a 20-year-old woman had filed a gang-rape complaint against him and began to summon him.

This application was marked as sent to the chief minister, the home minister and the Mumbai police commissioner while in reality, it had not even reached Khar police station’s senior inspector. Apparently, investigators learnt that the accused had fabricated the application to frighten the complainant. In another case which exposes the need for change in the present-day law, a 17-and-ahalf year old girl and a 27-year-old boy fell in love and planned to convince their families to get them married. However, before they could
Police stations witness surge in complaints
Following reforms in rape law, Mumbai’s police stations have witnessed a surge in the number of rape complaints, with more and more women coming forward to lodge criminal protests; the most worrying being ‘technical rapes’, which stem from failed relationships. According to police, these are cases where a consensual sexual relationship later turns into a complaint of rape against the man. Officers claim around 80 per cent of rape cases registered with them are ‘technical’ in nature though procuring exact figures was impossible. There is a definite need to address the law on rape in a sound comprehensive manner through legislative deliberations and after taking precedents from across the world into consideration. Glasgow police display sensitivity
Being emotional about rape won’t work
Introducing a battery of laws to curb the rate of rapes or other crimes isn’t actually effectual. It only creates an illusion of safety besides fetching votes for the legislating party. What we need to do is to tweak the law on rape as others with far-sighted vision, sensitivity and thoroughly researched deductions. Once that is done, we also need to be ready to undertake an impartial appraisal of whatever we legislate, when needed and…apply the change. Getting overtly emotional about rape instead of being logical will only land us with an entirely new set of problems and fail to address the real issue…that of deterrence!

DISPUTED: The Campa Cola Compound society residents have been in litigation with the BMC since 2005, but the debate refuses to die down. THIS refers to your cover story 'Why not regularise Campa Cola' (ADC, Aug 5). You have rightly asked the BMC to regularise Campa Cola society and end their nightmare. It's not that the society is the only one which has some serious violations in place but unfortunately their case has been highlighted for which the residents are paying a price. The Supreme Court has opened a window of opportunity for both the BMC and the society which must be grabbed by both the warring parties. It gives the BMC a chance to ratify the irregularities which in the first place were vetted by their own officers. People who have lived for 25
years in the society need not be displaced from there given the steep reality prices prevalent in Mumbai. Many residents have died during the struggle with the fear of a bleak future they may have once they are evicted. The BMC must find some solution in the best interests of people and close this sordid chapter once and for all. — Ashok Goswami, Mumbai

seems to have been missed. The plain truth is that the powers-thatbe in the BMC during the 1980s were fully aware of the irregularities at the site, right from the beginning of the construction. As your brilliant expose published in the August 2 edition revealed, altered floor plans and non-sanctioned FSI increases were knowingly approved – for a substantial monetary compensation, of course. If at all the BMC made site visits during construction, they turned a blind eye to the irregularities. Instead of taking corrective action, the concerned BMC officials viewed it as a golden opportunity to ensure a very comfortable retirement fund for themselves. These gentlemen have completely gotten away with their ill-gotten gains; and some of them have probably passed on – and it is the flat owners who are left holding the can. I am not saying that the occupants are completely innocent. When they acquired the illegal flats at a cheap rate, they must have, or should have, been aware that everything was not above board. Nonetheless in my opinion, the Supreme Court was a bit impetuous in putting the onus entirely on the flat owners; and virtually exonerating the BMC and the builders who actually perpetrated the illegalities. — Firoze Hirjikaka, Colaba

athak danseuse Rajeshwari Kumar got her taleem under the aegis of Kathak exponent Rajendra Gangani of the Jaipur gharana. She attained respectful identity as a Kathak dancer through her dedication towards this dance form. Rajeshwari has performed at several international platforms in countries like UAE, USA, UK and several more. She was awarded the title of ‘Shringar Mani’ by esteemed Sur Shingar Sansad in Mumbai. She spoke to James Manickam about her art. Rajeshwari has been promoting Kathak by educating young kids and ladies through her institute ‘Sancharee’ which she established in 2005 at Mira Road, in Thane district. Today she has 23 students who are learning Kathak in three
different levels – one, two and three. The students from age seven to 50 are a bundle of joy and exuberance in her classes. When asked why they were learning this dance form, they responded in unison: We want to become professional Kathak dancers like our guru. Rajeshwari’s husband is a theatre actor for the past 25 years and her daughter Gamak G A Sinha (7) is learning the dance since she was just one year old! Speaking to the ADC, Rajeshwari said in a soft spoken voice: “I am forced to forget everything that is past. Dimaag ki power bhool jaane se badthi hain aur gyaan dimaag se hridhay mein utarthi hain. If you think that’s not true, read on as we give a few men the chance to speak their mind about habits that annoy them.
Unable to take criticism If all your discussions with your partner end with him saying, ‘Forget it, you’ll never understand,’ your case is similar to that of 52-year-old doctor, Arun Kumar Walia. He tells us, “Although I love my wife to bits, I’m not fond of her inability to take criticism constructively. She ends up thinking that I am insulting her, when I am just being honest. A good example is when I say something about her cooking; it always tastes great but sometimes, the flavour goes awry and if I voice my opinion, it inevitably leads to a fight.”
>> Today we give the men a chance to air their grievances and tell us what they hate about their partners
not romantic enoUgh We are going to be honest — even we were a little surprised when Himanshu Wadhwa told us about the one thing that annoys him about his girlfriend. The 23year-old student, who seems to be a romantic at heart, tells us, “I don’t like it when my partner stays away from flaunting the fact that we are in a

relationship, especially on social media. The reason? Pyaar kiya to darna kya! (why fear when you’re in love) I think that if we live in a society where it is alright to put up pictures with a drink in our hands, we can put up a message that shows the world that we are together.”
about to get married in a few weeks and I couldn’t be happier. There is nothing about her that I dislike, but I would love it if she slept a little less. This way, we would get the opportunity to spend even more time together. But, I am not really complaining, I think she is perfect the way she is.”

accept that sometimes, we don’t understand them either. Anuj Bhagia, a 31-year-old marketing manager, tells us, “The traffic and presence of bad drivers ensure that you spend a lot of time travelling, because of which you spend less time at home. This becomes a reason for my wife to crib about the amount of ‘quality’ time that I spend with her. This makes me hate both the city and at times, my wife.”
singing questionable songs 23-year-old media professional, Sameer Bharde hates when his girlfriend starts to sing! He says, “It really gets on my nerves when my girlfriend starts singing terrible songs from films such as Dabangg and Main Tera Hero, in a nasal tone. I suspect that she does it on purpose, just to annoy me.” Well, if his girlfriend is reading this, if you’re actually doing it on purpose, all we are going to say is — it’s working!
neeDless shopping >> For quite a few men, anger and a refusal to accept that they are wrong, are habits that they find annoying in their partners Continued from pg 13 « and communication manager, tells us, “My wife is the best in the world, but there are a few things that I dislike about her. For example, she hates socialising while I, on the other hand, enjoy meeting new people. Also, she cannot control her anger and she starts breaking things, which hurts me a lot... financially! I wouldn’t mind if she breaks me, instead of the furniture in the house.” We aren’t quite sure whether he was joking with his last statement, but we really hope that he was!
Doesn’t let go Every relationship has a stage where all that a couple does, is fight. 23-year-old Nitin S., a management trainee, seems to be going through that stage. He tells us, “I think it is impossible for me to have a discussion with my girlfriend without it turning into an argument. In her world, there is absolutely no concept of a calm discussion. Worst of all, she remembers the tiniest disagreements from years ago, and uses them as ammunition to fuel the fight. The discussion can never remain objective. No matter why the fight starts, it eventually becomes very personal and nasty.” All we can say is, hold on Nitin, you’ll get there.
never wrong! If men don’t remember almost half of the things that their girlfriends/ wives tell them, isn’t it fair that women should be allowed to be right, all the time? 27-year-old sales manager, Yajvin Chopra doesn’t seem to think so. He tells us, “My girlfriend just can’t accept when she is wrong. No matter what the discussion is about, she can never be wrong! The lengths to which she can go to
prove that she is right, literally drive me up the wall. There’s just no winning with her. Although I absolutely adore her, I have given up all hope and know that no matter what happens, I am never going to see her accept that she’s wrong.”
health obsesseD Too much of a good thing can be bad, and caring too much about your partner can annoy him! Varun Shah, a 32-year-old HR executive tells us, “My wife is extremely committed to keeping our family healthy, but she just doesn’t know where to draw the line. She is very regimental, and gets upset with me for not keeping up my exercise routine or sticking to my diet. I try hard to stay healthy and fit, because I understand that it is for my own good, but sometimes, because I spend long hours at the office, it is impossible to abide by a strict schedule. I wish she understood my problem, but she gets furious most of the time.” Think of it this way girls, when you’re PMS-ing, a little show of love and affection will help, but your partner bombarding you with chocolates and flowers every few hours, without giving you a moment of peace — you wouldn’t want that, would you?
we are looking for great options and the best deal!
Here’s another complaint related to shopping. 29-year-old media professional Avadhoot Khanolkar says, “The one thing I hate the most about my girlfriend, is that she often buys things without thinking of their utility and within a few months, we have to throw them into our storeroom.”
a little stubborn 30-year-old, visual effects artist, Davis Curry tells us, “It’s really annoying when my fiancée behaves like she knows it all (which she actually doesn’t) and then tries to play it down by saying, ‘I knew that was going to happen.’ In other words, she is too stubborn to admit she is sometimes wrong.” The fact that this is coming up for the second time in this story should mean that this is an actual problem, right? Well, no; in case men haven’t realised yet, we are never wrong!
Doesn’t unDerstanD my position We believe that this works both ways. Men often don’t understand us and we should
makes me jealous We think that what Uday Mahale has to say about what annoys him about his wife, is the best way to end this story. The 58-year-old corporate executive, tells us, “It annoys me that she is retired and I still have to wake up at five in the morning to go to work!”
too much winDow shopping Shopping! We all knew this was going to come up sooner or later. Dennis Taraporewala, 40year-old brand strategist, tells us, “When we’re at a mall, my wife will look at every possible option of what she wants to buy, before finally selecting the one thing that had caught her attention and drawn her into the shop in the first place!” Okay to be honest, Dennis’ grievance holds some truth — but it is only because

hen you ask Kylie Flavell about her show, she will tell you that she wanted to create something that would encourage people who watched it to follow their heart. To her, that meant leaving her job, moving from Australia to Italy, finding Patrick Drake on a video blog and convincing him to move to Italy and join her. The result is When Patrick met Kylie — A Love of Food Story, a food show that airs from Monday to Friday, at 8pm on FOX Life. We spoke to the cheerful couple about the show, their journey and how they fell for each other while filming it. Kylie, you’ve had an eventful career! Tell us a little bit about it. Kylie: I was a journalist, a magazine editor and a publisher. I love to write and I am fascinated by people’s stories. Whether I am interviewing someone on camera, or for an article, I think everyone has a story to tell and this is what you will see our show. I end up meeting so many different people! From a shepherd in the mountains and young fashionistas in a nightclub, to a fisherman on an island — I just can’t help talking to strangers! You left a successful career behind to start over — was that scary? Kylie: I am lucky to have very supportive parents. They always said to me, “Whatever you want, go after it. Follow your heart. You’re only limited by your imagination.” Tell us about how you met Patrick. Kylie: I told him that I knew it sounded insane, but he should fly to Rome to meet me in person. I knew that once he got to Italy, he would be seduced! Fortunately, Patrick has an incredible sense of adventure and he loved the idea of being impetuous. I had been planning this show for nearly two years before I met him. It was so hard to convince everyone involved, that a girl they had never heard of could be the producer, creator and the host. It’s amazing that this turned into a real-life romance — like a fairytale! Kylie: Isn’t it crazy? People write to us constantly saying “But, tell us the truth — did it really happen like it says in the trailer of your show?” Even some of the TV networks were not entirely convinced by our story. Both Patrick and I are very romantic and so, although it seems strange to other people, to us it feels like it was meant to be. We both get a thrill from turning our daydreams into reality. I think I was very lucky to find a kindred spirit in Patrick. Most people would have received my email and dismissed it as something frivolous, but he flew to another country to meet a girl he’d never met before. Of course, we never guessed that we would end up falling in love. So, how did you fall for each other? Kylie: Patrick wakes up and wants to savour each detail of every day. He puts on music as soon as we wake up and we cook breakfast together and dance around like little children. Some adults lose the joy in simple things — but not Patrick. Patrick: You mean, aside from her smile, her laugh, energy and joie de vivre...? We both have this burning feeling that life is not to be spectated
MUMBAI | THURSDAY, AUGUST 7, 2014 — it’s an adventure and every day should be filled with positivity and laughter. That sounds exaggerated, but since we both feel the same way, it works out perfectly for us!
KYLIE’s quIcK pIcKs
Did you have instant chemistry? Patrick: Yes! I think we both saw the slightly reckless look in each other’s eyes! The first night we met, I remember seeing her waiting for me at the station. I recognised her big smile and she threw her arms around me. It was like we’d known each other for years! Kylie: Even though we were filming until well past midnight, we would go back to our hotel and stay up talking until sunrise, because we were both so excited. In fact, you can see in the show that we are always buzzing and this is because we had to drink so much Italian espresso to counter the sleep deprivation! Patrick, how do you go from being a lawyer — to this?! Patrick: This story can be a book too! Everyone says you should base your work on your passion. That’s easier said than done, because passions don’t pay your bills. I decided I’d had enough of being a lawyer and my passion was teaching people how to cook. So, I started making YouTube videos and secretly working in the kitchen of my law firm and other restaurants in London. A few months later, I resigned. My boss asked me if I was going to another law firm and I said, “No, I want to be a chef and have a TV show.” I will never forget his expression. You’re also head chef of Hello Fresh — tell us a little bit about that. Patrick: I started Hello Fresh two
>> Kylie and Patrick went from being strangers to falling in love while filming their TV show, When Patrick Meets Kylie — A Love of Food Story
For the love oF Food Kylie Flavell & Patrick Drake took their love for food all the way to Italy and turned it into a popular food show. Rhea Dhanbhoora talks to the couple to find out more
years ago. We send customers my recipes with a chilled box containing exactly portioned-out ingredients that they will need for the recipes. We sent out 10 boxes of food in the first week and this year, millions of people around the UK will be eating my meals. It’s exciting to think we’re changing how people eat! I want to show people how simple it is to cook at home. My next project is to create the ultimate online course — 130 short videos teaching you everything you need to know about cooking. I’m calling it, The 60 Second Chef. What was your favourite episode? Patrick: I have always loved Tuscany. It is so beautiful and cinematic. We stayed with an adorable family and saw how much happiness a simple life of good food and company can bring. I also indulged in one of my
favourite sports — polo. We went to a farm where I played chukkas against an Argentine gaucho. To see who won, you’ll have to watch the episode! Kylie: I think you will see around the Tuscany, Agrigento and Milan episodes, that we had begun to flirt with each other on camera and you can see that we were realising that maybe we were more than just friends. Actually, we were the last to realise this — the camera crew said that they could see it from day one! What advice would you give people looking for a happy ending? Kylie: I moved to Italy four years ago with the idea of making a TV show. If you are patient and work hard, you will succeed. The hardest part is finding something that makes you truly happy. You need to be honest
with yourself and forget about ego, money and people’s opinions. Both Patrick and I experienced rejection, but if you want a life that’s extraordinary, you need to be prepared to do things that the average person wouldn’t do. What’s next for you guys? Kylie: I am filming a new show on the Amalfi Coast in Italy. No camera crew — just me. It’s exciting because no one has ever done this for a food and travel show and it means that I can capture many spontaneous moments and show people the real Italy. Once I finish filming it, I will soon start working on my own recipe book, as well as on a second book about chasing your dreams. Patrick: Aside from my company in London, I’m also working on the ultimate online cooking course.
n Current favourite dish: Seafood carpaccio. When fish is fresh, it is best eaten almost raw, just lightly marinated in lemon juice and olive oil. n Red wine or white? Here, on the Amalfi Coast where I live now, they serve big jugs of white wine with white peaches floating in it to sweeten it. n Pick-me-up food: I have such a sweet tooth, I could eat cake every day. n Dream destination (apart from Italy!) Actually, I have always wanted to visit India. Devdas is my favourite film! n Chocolate or ice-cream? This is torture! Not a fair question. I’d pick Italian cassata, which is an ice cream cake with pieces of chocolate in it. n Your chef/ cook show host inspirations: I love Sophie Dahl because I have enjoyed reading ever since I was a little girl. Her recipes are like poetry. n Three things we’d find in your fridge: Yoghurt, because it can be used in sweet or savoury recipes. Lemons, because they cleanse the palate. Leftover cake, because I am constantly baking! n What’s your go-to dish to make if you have unannounced guests: I make pasta from scratch even though everyone always says “No Kylie, why not just use supermarket pasta — it’s faster!” But, the taste is so much better and I find kneading the dough relaxing. n One ingredient that you just can’t stand: I don’t like processed foods and mass produced food. Everything tastes better when it is made by someone who loves you.
pATRIcK’s quIcK pIcKs
n Current favourite dish: Chopped Mexican Salad with feta, baby spinach, black beans, lime, coriander, avocado, corn, raw peppers, grilled dukkah crusted chicken, sour cream and a side order of corn chips. I eat this every day. n Red wine or white? Peroni beer! n Dream destination: Big Sur and Yosemite in California — I love panoramas! n Chocolate or ice-cream: Chocolate ice-cream. n Your chef/ cook show host inspirations: Nigel Slater — he is a culinary genius and such a lovely person too! n Sweet or savoury?: Please don’t make me choose! n Three things we’d find in your fridge: Jalapeño chillies, coconut water and fresh Alphonso mango. n What’s your go-to dish to make if you have unannounced guests: My Mexican chopped salad! n One ingredient you can’t stand: Tripe

Everything about this look seems to work for the sultry Mugdha, except the excessive ruffles at the waist and the draped front. Either one would have been fine but both together are just too much, especially on such a bright dress!
It took a while to look away from Amy’s bright lipstick. It doesn’t suit the pretty, light colour of her dress at all! We hate the hair too. With an updo and a lighter lipstick, this look would have worked.
Vanita Bhatia’s DIVAlicious, is holding an exciting, drool-worthy exhibition that will showcase some of the best ethnic wear designers. Dev Goswami talks to Vanita to find out more about the exhibition and her brand
>> Vanita Mehta tells us about DIVAlicious — a mobile fashion store that features designer clothes
Tell us about DIVAlicious — what was the inspiration behind this brand? Those who have known me, have seen me sporting high heels and lipstick and trying to give my friends and family makeovers since I was a child. Reading fashion magazines and staying updated with trends, has been a big part of my life. I always knew that I would end up doing something related to fashion and surprised everyone by being the youngest private banker instead. It was actually one of the best decisions I have ever made, as it helped me to gain an insight into what it takes to start your own venture. With my work experience and love for fashion, I decided to do something different. Since Dubai is a fashion hub and always welcomes brands from other cities, I set up DIVAlicious there. It is a mobile, one-day store that features new designers every season. The concept is simple and has been well-appreciated. You started off promoting relatively unknown designers. You were even associated with a store that pushes upcoming talent. Today, DIVAlicious is associated with big, established names from the fashion industry. Which group of designers have you had the most fun being associated with? To be honest, besides elite, celebrity designers who are an inspiration to upcoming designers, we will continue to showcase upcoming talent. After all, celebrity designers were once upcoming designers too and somebody had to promote them. If DIVAlicious can be a platform for upcoming talent and cater to the crowd, we will have it all! Both sets of designers are surprisingly the same for me, as they have similar requirements. Whether they are established or upcoming, we give them equal importance and recognition and ensure that they stay associated with DIVAlicious. Going through the list of designers that will be showcased at your event today, there’s a predominant touch of Indian and ethnic wear. Is this a conscious decision? Yes it is! Our theme for the season is Royal & Regal, keeping the upcoming festivities in mind. We have Rakshabandhan, Ganesh Chaturti, Diwali and then Eid in October. With so many festivities around the corner, women need outfits for every occasion. Our designers for ethnic attire include Neeta Lulla, Sonaakshi Raaj, Studio AV by Gaurav & Nitesh and Anshu Jain, SVA by Sonam & Paras Modi, Mehwish Mughal Indian Couture and Cilvana designs. For those who
have already done their festive shopping for the season, we also have designers showcasing their pret collections, such as Masaba known for her funky prints, Nishka Lulla for her dresses, Sonya for Vemb by Sonya Vajifdar for drapes & gowns, Khamsa for Turkish jewellery and Verushka for footwear. While we do have an ethnic and festive theme, we will ensure that every woman entering DIVAlicious finds something to indulge in. What would you say is the USP of DIVAlicious? What can fashionistas expect from your exhibition that is taking place today? Our strength lies in the fact that we are hosting established as well as upcoming designers. Whether you have come with the intention to shop-till-you-drop or with a budget in mind — we have it all! Our upcoming designers work under a budget for the pret and couture products, while our celebrity designers work on customising for those who don’t have any budget constraints. We also have lifestyle products and pret outfits for those who love to window shop — but I know you will end up buying something from our wide array of products! Tell us about relatively unknown brands or designers that you think are going to be big in the next few years and who fashionistas in the city need to know about? Some of my exhibitors, who always pull in a crowd and are fairly new include Bumble bee from Delhi, Cilvana designs from Dubai, Khamsa for unique Turkish jewellery, Shefali Prive from London — they are known for their unique designs every season and have regular clients who wait to shop from their collection. What are your personal, all-time favourite fashion styles? My style elegant and simple. Jeans and a shirt or a maxi dress with black kohl, a nice bag and footwear can dress you up and yet make you look elegant. In your opinion, what fashion trends are going to be a hit in the coming months? Crop tops are here to stay for sure; mix and match prints are the new fad and will be the trend for the upcoming season. With ethnic, it’s always long anarkalis with a mix of pastels and bright colours. The exhibition will be held at Four Seasons Hotel, Worli from 11am to 8pm. Contact 9920169999 for more information.
Vanita’s faVourites Vanita tells us about some of her personal favourite collections that you can look forward to at her exhibition today. 1) MasaBa: Prints which can be work for any occasion. Elegant yet dressy. 2) sonaakshi raaj: Saree gowns for ethnic occasions. Easy to wear and looks better than a sari itself! 3) Cilvana Designs: Fusion attire for parties or formal occasions. Each outfit is so different that it makes a woman stand out from the rest. 4) sVa by sonam & Paras Modi: Elaborate styles and an innovative design, this is a must have in each DIVA’s wardrobe. >> Masaba’s elegant yet dressy collection is among Vanita’s favourites

If you look at Hrishita from the waist up, she looks gorgeous. Her hair frames her face well, her makeup is spot on and the colour and style of the top half of her dress is perfect. However, we get to the lehengadrape-bedsheet look she’s sporting from the waist down and we can’t help but cringe.
This is a heavy look, but it’s really working for Richa. She looks well turned out and her clever placement of drape and pallu means that she is showing just the right hint of tummy. The black, gold and pink combination works well for her. We’re not very fond of her necklace though.
Unfortunately for Sonakshi, she hasn’t managed to pull off quite the ethereal look with this outfit. Instead, she looks like she stepped out in a slightly embellished nightgown! We like her pink lipstick, but even her sideswept hair can’t save this look.

« just out! honest reviews of new products in the market Bourjois 1-2-3 PerfeCt CC eye CreaM
Bourjois is a brand that I trust with makeup. Although expensive, their products are usually right on the money and deliver on their promises. This CC cream, formulated especially for the area under your eyes, is no exception. The product claims to hide dark circles and blemishes, while reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It also promises to hydrate your under-eye region and contains SPF 15. Essentially a colour corrector, this cream is available in a twist-up tube, with a silicone applicator. I find that the applicator is quite useless, but once you get past the silicone tugging on your skin and use your fingers instead, you will find that it is a good product. It appears to be too runny, but it blends into your skin well, corrects pigmentation and dark circles and instantly cools your skin, taking care of puffiness. Also, it doesn’t crease and lasts for quite a while if you set it with powder, making this product a winner in my opinion. Price `660 for 1.5ml Where Cosmetic stores across the city rating ****
iraya hair Masque With 11 herBs
I have slightly dry, curly hair, so a hair masque that promises to nourish and calm it is an exciting prospect. You know that this masque is packed with eleven herbs the minute you open the product. Smelling heavily like an Ayurvedic potion, I was slightly sceptical about applying it to my hair. But, I gave it a chance and let it sit on my shampooed hair for around five minutes, as instructed, and then washed it off. As my hair air-dried, I found that it felt extremely heavy. Although it looked shiny and healthy, it was a little too rich for me, making my hair look greasy and heavy. Having loved their face masques, I was quite disappointed with this product as it also irritated my scalp, as opposed to calming it. Also, no matter what you do to get the unpleasant smell out of your hair, it is going to be something that you have to live with if you choose to use this masque. Oiling your hair once a week is extremely important to keep it well nourished. But, it also depends on the oil you use. While everyone uses regular coconut oil, one shouldn’t shy away from trying something new. Emami recently introduced the 7 Oils In One range and has done a tremendous job with it. The USP of this oil is it’s fragrance, which is extremely addictive. If you have dry hair, this oil will gradually help your hair become softer and smoother. Apply the oil on your hair and leave it on overnight. After you wash it the next morning, you will notice the difference yourself. There is a smart, young girl who recently joined my team as an intern. She always does a good job when she is assigned a task, but while she completes work within the deadlines, I often find her talking on the phone for hours together, or taking really long lunches and chatting with other colleagues over what can only be described as an hour-long coffee break. Although she finishes all the work assigned to her on time, she squanders away half of her day dillydallying and idly surfing the internet. I want to correct her attitude, but don’t know how to broach the subject, because she is doing her work well. What do you suggest? — Payal Singhal, lower Parel dear Payal, Your new intern may be a sharp worker, but her attitude is all over the place. She seems to think that once she has finished her work, she has the right to do whatever she wants to with her time. The easiest way to tackle the situation, without making it awkward, would be to increase her work load a little, or to switch up the kind of tasks that you usually assign to her. This will also keep her occupied for longer, and help her get the most learning out of the internship. You can also ask her to send you a daily report. When she realises that she doesn’t have much to show for her day spent in the office, she will herself ask you for more work, in order to complete her internship fruitfully. If all else fails, assign her to assist your juniors and get her hands dirty with actual, everyday work. Since you mentioned that she is competent, she might actually end up being a great help. If, like every other woman, there are items in your closet that you don’t wear any more, it’s time to clear out your closet and donate the clothes that you never wear, says Yamini Walia church Most churches in the city will accept your old clothes as a donation. While some churches donate them to their staff members, there are others who donate old clothes to the less privileged. For more information, contact a church near you.
online Websites Donating clothes on online websites such as eBay, Quickr and Olx is also a good option. Simply put up an advertisement describing the condition of your clothes and you will soon find someone who needs them. You can also contact people who have already posted advertisements regarding the donation of clothes and ask them about their experience.
nGos There are several NGOs, such as the Umang Foundation and Adarshmay Trust that accept used clothes as donations. These organisations have several centers across the city. So, you can visit any centre that is convenient for you and drop off your clothes.
Goonj
A bumpy journey The sorry state of our roads and bad public transport are a cause for concern if you’re pregnant and need to travel frequently. However, as long as you follow these tips, there is no need to put a blanket ban on your travel plans. Dev Goswami tells you more
W
hen you’re pregnant, it’s obvious that you’re going to be scared of the slightest jolt while travelling. Not only can this be painful, but the smallest of accidents can also harm you and your baby. So, it is no wonder that from doctors, to friends and family, everyone advises you to be extremely cautious when you’re travelling — whether it is within the city, or when you’re travelling to another city or country. Read on as we give you a few helpful suggestions that will help ensure your safety and comfort when you’re pregnant and travelling. in the city: Surprisingly, it is travelling within the city that you need to be more worried about than travelling to another destination. With pot-hole filled roads, and rickshaws and buses that look like they need urgent repair, you are always going to be at the risk of jolty rides or being stuck in a rickety vehicle. So, try and arrange for private transport. If you must travel by public transport, travel in taxis as they have better suspension than rickshaws or buses. This means that even if the roads are bad, you won’t feel the effects as severely as you would in a rickshaw. Also, it should go without saying that you should always ask the driver to drive slowly and carefully and to avoid bumpy lanes.
Wear comfortable clothes: One of the most important aspects of travelling when you’re pregnant is to make sure that you wear comfortable clothes. Tight clothes will not only stress you out, they are difficult to move in. From moving between modes of transport to climbing stairs and even sitting, simple, everyday actions will be much harder to perform if your clothes are making you feel uncomfortable and constricted. So, wear loose clothing that allows you to move easily. When you’re travelling overseas: If you’re going on a vacation or visiting another country for a business trip, research the diseases that you might be at risk of contracting in different countries. Then, visit your gynecologist to see whether he/ she recommends you take any precautionary medication or vaccines. Flying: While the actual experience of travelling by plane will be hassle-free, you need to plan it perfectly. First of all, get a goahead from your gynecologist and find out whether there are any precautions than you need to take. Ruchi Mehta a senior manager from Samsonite, shares a tip from her personal experience, “As long as you haven’t experienced any complications, the safest time to fly when you’re pregnant is during the
second trimester. By this time, morning sickness is likely to have subsided, energy levels are higher and the risk of going into labour is low.” Ruchi also adds that while commercial planes are fine, smaller, nonpressurised aircrafts such as helicopters are not safe, as the low levels of oxygen can impact your baby’s health. Remember, airlines also have their own set of rules and regulations vis a vis pregnant women. Make sure to do your research before your journey.
Goonj is a movement that is dedicated towards re-using clothing and other underutilised material, moving beyond charity, in order to turn it into a resource for development. Over the last ten years, Goonj has grown as a mass movement among urban and rural masses. They make products from the strands and shreds of clothing that you have donated.
thriFt stores Thrift stores such as Back Alley resell clothing at rock-bottom prices, which make them affordable to low-income families. Thrift stores are mostly for profit, but you can still serve the community by donating your unwanted clothes. You can contact Back Alley through their Facebook page — www.facebook.com/BackAlley101
Minor precautions
l When you’re travelling alone, always make
sure that you carry a fully-charged phone along with a bottle of water. l If you’re travelling long distances in a car, take periodic breaks to stretch your legs and relax sore muscles. l Remember to visit your doctor if you’re involved in an accident, no matter how minor, or if you experience pain during or after travelling. l Always wear a seat-belt when you’re travelling in a car and support your belly by using pillows or blankets. l Plan your trip down to the T. A well-planned excursion ensures that you don’t end up over-exerted. l Don’t try any sporting activities unless you have cleared them with your doctor.

My brother is seven years younger than me and is a lovely guy. I am truly grateful for him in my life. It is nice to be the shorter sibling and still be looked up to. We missed the whole fighting stage because of the age difference. He is now in college and I work.
Relationship
Milestones When you are in a relationship, every passing day, month and year signifies something special. Yamini Walia tells you about a few relationship milestones
F
rom the first time you held hands to the first time you kissed, everything signals a growth in your relationship. Even the most seemingly unimportant moments can prove to be pivotal while building a relationship. This may not apply to all couples, but in most cases, these milestones hold true.
No coNcrete plaN When you first start dating, your dates will always be pre-planned, whether it is to watch a film or go out for dinner. So, the first time you decide to meet each other with absolutely no plan in mind, marks a big step forward in your relationship. This is an indicator that you really like the person and that your main aim is to spend time with each other, without accomplishing anything.
First time embarrassmeNt Imagine the two of you are in a bed together, when suddenly, you hear your partner let one rip, loud enough for your neighbour to have heard. Sure, you are taken by surprise, but this doesn’t affect you at all. This milestone marks a deep level of intimacy and usually happens when you have touched the one-month mark.
i disagree... You have been lying about your love of soccer and trying to hide your boredom every time he switches channels to watch a game. But, as soon as you hit the three-month mark, your hatred for soccer casually slips out. This is a sign of a stable relationship. Once
you know that he is here to stay, you will become more honest with him. However, don’t get offended when he tells you that the cooking shows you watch are not his cup of tea!
My boyfriend recently proposed to me and while I’m elated, he seems to have gone overboard with his attempt to get me to gel with his family. The idea is a sweet one, but his mother and sister now accompany us on every outing. I’ve known his parents and sister for about four years and we get along well. But, these forced outings, courtesy my over-eager fiancé, are putting us all in a spot. His family always feel a little awkward to be a

partNers or Not! You are not sure about how to introduce him to your friends — are you just close friends, or partners? But, the first time he addresses you as his girlfriend, you know that your relationship is for real. This usually happens around two months into a relationship and proves that you are seriously involved with each other.
meet my Family So, a year has flown by and it’s time for you to meet his family. It may sound scary, but the bottom line is that he wants to introduce you to the people he is closest to and wants you to know where he comes from. Obviously, you are expected to do the same. These visits are the key to unlocking greater love and intimacy.
First tragedy
I know he can’t afford these luxurious items. And I know he often goes without stuff himself! The next morning he was coming over. I got my hair styled, dressed up a bit, bought cupcakes for our coffee break, had conversations with him in my head... Then he rang the bell and I got so nervous, I turned off the lights and pretended not to be at home!
Life is not a bed of roses. So, when you have been together for a long time, you are bound to face a tragedy together — whether it is the death of a loved one, or a generally trying situation. As a couple, this allows you to gain a greater appreciation of the relationship you have with one another. If you come out of the experience more comfortable with each other, you’ll know that your partner is the one!
« Dear grace, i have a problem... dear grace,
This is not a real problem, but I am a bit concerned. You see, every year on Raksha Bandhan I am truly happy to have my brother there for me. Every year, he makes a really big deal about getting me something. I mean, he treats Raksha Bandhan as if it were more important than my birthday! No pretty blouse or box of chocolates makes the cut for him.
part of the forced outing and are slightly agitated. I don’t know how to tell him that he needs to slow things down a little. Help! — ruchika mehta, andheri (w) dear ruchika, Your fiancé seems to be really excited about your engagement. While there is no doubting his commitment towards your relationship, in his excitement to ensure that everything goes smoothly, he is trying a bit too hard. Gently suggest that his family may
have other things planned, when he asks them to join you on every outing. If he doesn’t get the hint, tell him that forcing these things will only make everyone feel awkward. Decide on spending time with his family once or twice a week and stick to the schedule. Gradually making your way into each other’s lives is a much better idea than socialising in a forced, staged setting.
"How do i tell him to not get me such expensive stuff? I love him and I love seeing the look on his face when he gives me a gift that he knows I will love. He is my little brother and I love him. He doesn’t need to put himself in debt just to make me happy — Deedee a) Set a challenge this year, of a reasonable spending limit. b) He is obviously saving all year long to give you these gifts. Accept them since it makes him happy. What a lucky sister you are! c) This might be more serious than you think. Does he have a source of income? How can he afford these items at his age? Is he involved in some illegal business? LAST WEEK: Tara-Rum-Pum should pick Option C: It is normal to admire your boss, but try not to develop a crush on him!

‘awareness of the experience’ and the level of ‘decision’. If you are experiencing attraction and are aware of what you are experiencing, it is OK till that point. But when you nurse and nurture this attraction in your fantasies, and also want to translate your fantasies into reality, I must say that you are walking on a “self-destructive path”. Get out of this situation immediately. Do not nurse or nurture, but in fact ‘actively’ discourage thoughts of this woman. What you need to do is to get going in the real world and mingle with those in your age group. There are a lot of attractive young women of your age out there, if only you will come out of your internal world. Make an active effort to be available to newer ‘real’ relationships. Also focus your energies on career-building and other creative pursuits. You have a long way to go, so work towards creating a real, fulfilling and meaningful life for yourself.
Get real
I am 20-year-old college student. I am sexually attracted to a 41-year-old single woman staying in our society. Very often I masturbate fantasising about having sex with her. I feel like proposing a real sexual relationship with her. Should I do it? SHE is 41 years and you are 20. The biologically maturing man in you is feeling attracted to a biologically full-blown woman. That is a natural occurrence. But a human being is not just confined to his biology. He has been gifted with 'discrimination', something that animals do not possess. Use this power to discriminate and discern, and you will see for yourself that

The refractory period changes from person to person. However after the refractory period, which could be twenty minutes to a few hours, one can get an equally good erection once again. 4.1% is an ambitious target. The government will achieve it if it does want. It has done before. But how it achieves it is what is important. India has capacity to bring its fiscal under control because we don’t spend too much as fraction of GDP. Where we do a less good job is collecting revenues. So broad basing revenue collection process...Expanding the base is the way we can do it (bring fiscal deficit under control).

Ranveer Singh loves Manish Paul’s dressing style and in fact Ranveer has been overheard complimenting Manish many times. Ranveer, who is himself known to experiment a lot with styles, really likes Manish’s suits which he wears at events and especially on the reality show 'Jhalak Dikhla Jaa'. “I’m always appreciative of a sharply cut suit. Whenever I would meet Manish at promotions and events I would notice that his suits were fit to perfection and I would make it a point to compliment him on them. I think Manish is certainly one of the better dressed personalities when it comes to formal style,” says Ranveer.

Apara Mehta who acts in ZEE TV's ‘Jamai Raja’ says, “I had always told myself I’ll never do a role where I am playing a granny with a chandan ki bindi and a white saree. So, at first, when I heard I was approached to play the role of the heroine Roshni’s maternal grandmother, I was not sure if I wanted to do it. But when Ashwini (Yardi) told me all about the character being young at heart and someone modern, contemporary and cool, I instantly found the role catchy.” Nani prays every morning but is hip enough to sport cool salwar kameezes, tries nail art and visits the spa every now and then.

The producers are the reputed film family of the Guhas and the channel ZEE MARATHI is one of the leading channels. Are you more inclined towards television or films? Television is a growing medium but films do give you a wider exposure. My ambition is to do more films.
Are you open to reality shows or anchoring? Yes. I would love to host a show or participate in a singing or a dance reality show.
‘Comedy Nights’ will now be weekly an artiste I get maximum satisfaction when I do diverse work. “If I keep the show biweekly, I will not be able to do films. I will try to do the show once-a-week so that I can manage my dates with film shoots,” Kapil told PTI. Recently the show completed its 100th episode and Kapil said he never expected that the show will run for such a long time. “It is a surreal feeling for me,” he said.
‘Jhalak...’ should have transparency: Kushal onfused over his eviction from 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa', model-actor Kushal Punjabi says there should be more transparency in the elimination process on the show. Kushal (32), who had entered the celebrity dance show as a wild card contestant, lost to Kiku Sharda in the face-off. The 'Kaal' actor said the judges called him a supe-
television after a hiatus of six years. He will play the boss of Dev Tours and Travels who enforces strictly the clause 'unmarried employees' in his company. His character is called Avinash Dev. Suyash Tilak plays Jay, my husband in the show. Also co-starring are Sunil Tawde, Rajan Bhise, Arun Nalawde, Vishaka Subedar, Prajakta Dighe, Praful Samant, Neha Joshi etc. Pintoo Guha and Kalyani Guha of Film Farm are the producers and Jalinder Kumbhar is the director.
rior dancer to his competitors, so he does not understand why he got eliminated. “I don't understand, is it a dance-based show or concept-based? I showed pure dance in my act and judges praised me and I was still shown the door. So, I am confused and from dancing perspective, I find it unfair. If I am called a superior then what is the logic behind my defeat?” Kushal told PTI. The actor is definitely unhappy with his elimination from the show but has no regrets of taking it up. “It gave me an opportunity to be on stage and practice my hobby so I have no regrets. I am not the one to take this eviction to heart,” he said, adding that he is overwhelmed with his fans’ love.
Ravi Dubey wants meaty roles R
avi Dubey is yet to sign a Bollywood project but the TV actor says he is not open to do run-of-the-mill roles in films. The 'Jamai Raja' actor says he considers himself lucky for not being typecast in the small
screen. “I am happy where I am today. I am enjoying my stints in TV because I am getting various kind of roles and I am lucky for it. “I very much want to do film but not a regular role. My role should be meaty and at the same time inspirational. I am sure something will definitely manifest,” Ravi told PTI. The actor also revealed that he has been getting several film offers but is yet to find a dream role. “Every month I read two scripts but I am yet to get a good offer for which I can spare six months from my career in TV. I should get such an offer which should secure me as an actor at every level. It should not be an ambiguous gamble. At best, it should be a calculated risk,” he said. PTI

REDEMPTION TIME FOR CORNERED TEAM INDIA SPORTS
MUMBAI | THURSDAY, AUGUST 7, 2014 By Chetan Narula
M
ANCHESTER: With lingering disappointment of an unfavourable verdict in the James Anderson fracas, India go into the fourth cricket Test against England here tomorrow facing a selection dilemma on whether to leave out a couple of out-of-form players or give them one last opportunity. With their backs to the wall after a 'double blow' last week when they were soundly thrashed by 266 runs in the third Test followed by ICC appointed Judicial Commissioner's verdict declaring Anderson 'not guilty', it will be redemption time for Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his boys as they hope to get their acts together at the Old Trafford. The team management might look at a couple of changes in the side with chances of veteran opener Gautam Gambhir and off-spinner R Ashwin making it to the team as Shikhar Dhawan's poor form and Rohit Sharma's atrocious shot selection might bring down the axe on the duo. Although the series is levelled 11, poor on-field performance and losig a battle off the field have left the team in a vulnerable state. It would be helpful if they also draw some inspiration from the 2007-08 tour to Australia. It was the last time an Indian cricketer was involved in a fracas that involved 'Level 3 offence. Albeit matters had become more serious back then, including a threat to call off the tour, the political undertones this time around are considerably muted. However, Dhoni will like to emulate erstwhile captain Anil Kumble, who had led from the front, not only making a dignified off-field stand but also marshalling his troops well on-field, leading the side to a memorable 72-run win at Perth. In supporting Jadeja, even refusing to be placated by efforts of both the BCCI and the ECB, Dhoni has done the necessary bit off-the-field. Now he needs to get it right inside the boundary ropes, for that is what the series is all about. Seven years down the line, everyone does recall the Andrew

Symonds-Harbhajan Singh controversy, but the score-line nevertheless read that Australia beat India 2-1. A similar defeat here will make the worst possible reading for Dhoni's overseas Test report-card that is already quite overloaded with embarrassing losses since 2011.
The answer to his troubles can also be found in that 2007-08 series. At Trent Bridge and Lord's, India had deployed five bowlers – a strategy last deployed overseas at Adelaide in that same series. With a draw and a win at Trent Bridge and Lord's respectively, it can be argued that this ploy was
worked wonders for India. The argument holds water because on a flat track at Southampton, their seven front-line batsmen could only manage 330 and 178 in two innings. With the series crucially poised, it begs for a strategic rethink. Rohit Sharma's inconsistency has led the
team down at crucial junctures. With his poor shot-selection at the Ageas Bowl, he proved the adage that a seventh batsman cannot do what the first six couldn't. But it can be argued that a fifth bowler there might have made a huge difference, especially if he was a spinner.
‘I did what I thought was right’ By Chetan Narula

ANCHESTER: Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni came out fighting once again in the James Anderson-Ravindra Jadeja case, firmly stating that he stands by what he said during the whole saga and that they brought forward "something that was unacceptable". Ahead of the fourth Test versus England, starting here today, all the talk continued to be about the incident that has
marred the fivematch series. Both Anderson and Jadeja were pronounced non-guilty by the ICC' judicial commission last Friday and the game's world governing body has decided not to appeal against the verdict despite a request from BCCI.
"I did something that was right and I stand for what's right and what's wrong," said Dhoni, referring to his support for the all-rounder. "If something wrong is happening, I will go against it irrespective of who is doing it. If one of my players gets fined and if he's within the boundary lines, I will definitely go and defend him. But if he crosses that line, I won't come and he will go alone and face the consequences." When asked if the ICC verdict was personal humiliation for him since he was so vocal about the issue, Dhoni denied the same and said, "It was physical contact that we reported about. We never said anything about sledging. Quite a few harsh words were spoken but we didn't report that." "What is more important is that we brought forward something that we thought was unacceptable. What happens beyond that, it is not in my jurisdiction to punish or award penalties. We thought this incident was bad for the game so we brought
it forward. It's up to the ICC and others to see what needs to be done," he added.
I WOULD HAVE SORTED JADEJAANDERSON ISSUE IN MINUTES: ENGINEER The BCCI may be pressing for a harsh punishment against James Anderson but former India wicketkeeper Farokh Engineer said the England pacer does not merit a four-match ban for his spat with Ravindra Jadeja and suggested that he would have sorted out the issue in minutes. Engineer, a former ICC match referee, said that even though he was not aware of the details of the altercation, he cannot believe that the Indians would have wanted Anderson to be banned. "It's a narrow corridor in the dressing rooms there. MS Dhoni says he saw Jimmy push Jadeja and, if that's the case, Jimmy's been a bit naughty. But it certainly doesn't merit a fourmatch suspension," Engineer was quoted as saying by The Guardian.

UMBAI: The five-year strong hold of Leslie Machado's Don Bosco were breached on Wednesday as they were knocked out of the MSSA first division under 16 interschool football. Prior to the onset of the tournament, Machado was confident but stayed realistic about the need to up their game with every match they played. However, the five year reign was brought to an end by Bombay Scottish, Mahim who created an upset to rout the table toppers out of the tournament by getting the better off the Matunga side 2-1 which was played for the first time on the astro-turf at the Cooperage Ground. The Mahim team were relishing their conquest in the tournament and it became even better after their heroes for the day - Parth Damani and Bhavya Jain netting a goal apiece to bring the curtains down on Bosco's title defense. While all seemed well in the start with Bosco's captain Bryce Miranda converting the first in the 11th minute, the Matunga outfit had their backs to the wall nine minutes later as Damani drew level. Much to his celebrations, he was reprimanded by the referee for his 'shirtless' celebration with a yellow card. With both outfits

Meanwhile, the winning goalscorer, Jain said that he was still to come to terms with the victory and he was pleased at the contribution made by him to the team. “I wanted to play and I got my chance when I was substituted by the coach. I knew that I had to contribute so that we could create an upset. I didnt know that I would be the one to take us through. I am really happy about my performance and received good support from the boys. Now we have to take this momentum to the final match and win the trophy,” said Damani. EW DELHI: Olympic medallist Vijay Kumar has missed out on a berth in his pet event - rapid fire pistol - for the upcoming Asian Games but he is still part of the strong 43-members squad, which will be spearheaded by shooting ace Abhinav Bindra. The multi-sport extravaganza event will be held in Incheon, South Korea from September 19. The selection committee of the National Rifle Association of India picked the team during a meeting at its headquarters here. "His (Vijay's) scores haven't been good enough in recent times and as you all know, as per our selection policy, only the last six scores are taken into account while deciding on a shooter," an NRAI official said. Beijing Olympic gold medallist Bindra, who has just won the top prize at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, will, as usual, represent India in 10-metre air rifle alongside Sanjeev Rajput and Ravi Kumar. Like it was with the CWG squad, multiple medallist Gagan Narang will not be part of the 10 metre air rifle team, but will compete in rifle prone (Joydeep Karmakar and Hariom Singh being the other two members) and rifle 3 position (Sanjeev Rajput and Chain Singh). London Olympics silver medallist Vijay Kumar will be part of the centre fire pistol team alongside Pemba Tamang and Gurpreet Singh. Vijay failed to qualify for the finals of rapid fire pistol at the justconcluded Glasgow CWG.

UMBAI: Shweta Joshi more than made up for her doubles loss to clinch the gold in the women’s singles category and she was closely followed by her colleague Kuhu Anand who won the silver during the Game On! – the sport tournament for corporates, which concluded its second weekend at the Ajmera iLand Sports Academy, Wadala. Aditi Tanksale of Pitambiri won the bronze medal. The second weekend of Game On! saw some exceptional performances by players from various multinational corporations, but the ones that stood out the most were those that came from employees of TCS and Deloitte. The level of competition was as intense as ever and every point ended on a nail biting note. After an initial scare, Vishal Yadav and Aushima of TCS managed to overcome the onslaught of Hemant Ojha and Shweta Joshi of Deloitte in the mixed doubles event. Vishal was
